Bloody Kin is right!.......2000-08-30
Margaret Maron is a great storyteller, and although she has written a series based in New York, North Carolina appears to be where her heart is. Although Deborah Knott does not appear in "Bloody Kin," we get a different, more family-oriented view of Dwight Bryant, so we feel that we are on familiar ground. Our heroine, Kate, is portrayed as a woman determined to make a place for herself in a strange land after her husband, Jake, is killed, and she does so admirably. Jake's family members, however, the few that are still alive, are not helpful in this regard. The child is a welcome ray of sunshine in an otherwise dismal situation, and Kate establishes a wonderful rapport with her. Another reviewer was apparently horrified that Kate smoked during her pregnancy; on the other hand, the story takes place in the very heart of tobacco country, and I was more impressed by how little she smoked. As a story that stands apart from both the Sigrid Harrald series and the Deborah Knott stories, "Bloody Kin" is a fine read.
Even without Judge Knott, Colleton County is Dangerous.......2000-07-25
In this novel, the main characters are not the Knott family, but Dwight is still around to solve the mystery. Kate inherits her husband's homeplace after his murder, but his murder isn't the only murder or the only mystery.
Great setting, but protagonist not a great role model.......1999-04-03
As a fan of Margaret Maron's Deborah Knott series, I looked forward to this book set in the same area. Kate was a fairly well-developed character, and it was interesting to see deputy Dwight Bryant in a light other than with Knott. The glimpses of her design work were good details to include, and it further developed the setting of the novel. Of all of Maron's writing assets, setting has to be one of her best. Throughout this book, I was horrified to read about the main character smoking as well as drinking alcohol while pregnant . An otherwise intelligent, pleasant character, Kate was marred by these habits, and the reader goes away from the book respecting her less. Believability may have been what Maron was after, or realism, but she could have found more constructive ways to get to the same end. In all, the book was an enjoyable read, and I still look forward to more of the Colleton County conundrums.

Book Description
Budgeron is struggling mightily to write the great ferret novel, a story so rich, so finely wrought, it will set the world of ferret literature on its tail. By day, he writes adventure stories for kits' magazines. By night, he lights the Lamp of Wisdom and calls forth Count Urbain de Rothskit, hero of the massive volume, Where Ferrets Walk. After a near-perfect first sentence, Budgeron sighs in his tiny attic writing room and waits for the second to come.
Downstairs, a page-turner romance tumbles effortlessly from the keyboard of Budgeron's mate, Danielle. A pawdicurist who decides to write for fun, Danielle never expected her first page would explode with Veronique Sibhoan Ferret, a willful, naughty, mesmerizing animal who would one day bewitch millions of readers.
Budgeron and Danielle are aspiring writer ferrets following their calling through the quiet rooms where stories are born, past the mailbox and rejection slips and finally into the white hot world of big-time book publishing. In the end, each finds success writing for the one heart they must truly please: their own.
Writer Ferrets: Chasing the Muse is a tale about the search for what really matters in life; the struggle to free our inner voice; the pursuit of a dream against significant odds and the need to love and be loved by a like-minded spirit.

Jonathan Ferret -- a fable for our time...........2003-09-17
From the author of the indominatable Jonathan Seagull comes The Ferret Chronicles series. Bach still knows how to tell a fable and he's as charming as ever. An easy read. Fun to have on your shelf when the going gets rough. Great book to read on a lunch hour on a bad day. As refreshing as a walk in the woods. Okay so some of you may think it's corny but then apple pie and mom still warm my heart.
A message of hope.......2003-09-13
I have always been a fan of Richard Bach. I constantly find myself drawn to the simplicity of his writing and the complexity of his message and this book is no exception.
My own life has been full of loss for the last several years. Loss of hope, loss of career, loss of my marriage, loss of trust in my world... all of these have conspired to rob me of my dreams. Picking up this book on a whim, I felt all my hopes come rushing back in to fill the void inside of me.
I have always (since I was a small child) dreamed of writing. I was never able to garner the courage to actually attempt it, and I couldn't ever explain to anyone why. Finally, after losing so much in my life I finally managed to gain the courage to reach out to my dream with both hands and chase it wherever it might lead. This courage is due in great part to Mr. Bach and this book, and I will be forever in his debt.
He captures the frustration and elation of the creative process beautifully. Yes, he writes simply, and yes at times he's a bit sappy. This is part of the charm and if you are too jaded or too cynical to appreciate it then I truly feel sorry for you.
Do yourself a favor. Buy this book. Read this book. Enjoy this book. If you are an aspiring writer, if you know an aspiring writer, or if you just simply love the simplicity of openly and honestly chasing your dreams you NEED this book.
Finally! FERRETS portrayed as .......2003-04-25
I'm so sick of ferrets being portrayed as evil weasel is books. Ferrets are truly happy, fun-loving and gentle little souls. Bach, who owns several ferrets himself, obviously knows this. I love the concept of the Ferret Chronicles, and the drawings are lovely, but Bach's writing style is just a bit too simplistic for me. I understand that is part of his charm and the reason most people DO like his writing, but for me the storylines just didn't hold my interest. (Still, I bought them because I will buy anything in support of ferrets! Kudos to you, Richard!)

For the Young Writer on Your Christmas List.......2002-11-12
Richard Bach's love of the creative process illuminates every page of this charming story. This would make a nice gift for any aspiring writer on your Christmas list but I think it would have a special resonance for younger writers (twelve to fourteen). This book neatly illustrates the idea that struggling to meet others' expectations just doesn't contain the satisfaction (or rewards) of honoring one's own muse. I wish Writer Ferrets existed when I was fifteen and got a "C" on a creative writing asignment. From that moment, I spent decades trying to raise that grade by writing what I thought others wanted to read. Like the main character in "Chasing the Muse" I found myself stuck and producing writing that had nothing to do with my own inner voice. Lucky for me I found a friend who showed me the error of my ways and later gifted me with this book to underscore her point. If you are a struggling (or blocked) writer, I think you'll enjoy a quiet hour or two with the "Writer Ferrets."
A Book For Children Of All Ages.......2002-11-03
It isn't often I "gush" about a book, but I will about this one. Yesterday I opened to the first page of "The Ferret Chronicles - Writer Ferrets: Chasing the muse." I have just finished it.
This could well be classed a children's book, as could most books by Richard Bach: "Jonathon Livingston Seagull," "There's No Such Place as Far Away."
But this one, about a pair of ferrets and how they find their "muse" is both informative and inspirational. I would recommend it to any aspiring writer.
And, if it needs a childlike mind to read and enjoy it, then I must have such a mind, and I'm proud of it.
"Writer Ferrets: Chasing the Muse": by Richard Bach. A good book for all children, no matter what their age.

"There's no need to be a martyr!" insist the authors of The Change Before the Change: Everything You Need to Know to Stay Healthy in the Decade Before Menopause, ob-gyn Laura E. Corio and health writer Linda G. Kahn. They wrote The Change for women, usually over 35, who have started experiencing some of the symptoms that indicate that menopause is approaching. This transition time, which can last for several years before menstrual periods stop, is called perimenopause. Symptoms may include "irregular bleeding, hot flashes, palpitations, mood swings, headaches, insomnia, memory loss, vaginal itching and dryness, lack of libido, dry skin and hair, weight gain." The Change documents how perimenopausal women can counter these symptoms by adding certain vitamins, minerals, herbs, and foods to their diet; making simple lifestyle changes; and using hormone preparations, including natural hormones and low-dose estrogen. At the same time, Corio and Kahn wisely stress that relief isn't a quick fix, but should be an ongoing collaboration between you and your doctor. "Your body is not a car that you simply take to the shop for a new set of spark plugs," they say. "It's a complicated, fascinating organism that should command your full interest and attention."
The book covers the symptoms of perimenopause; changes in fertility; long-term health of the heart, breasts, reproductive organs, thyroid, and bones; and therapies including medical treatments, supplements, and herbs. Corio and Kahn don't tell you what to do if you're encountering perimenopausal symptoms; rather, they introduce you to your options, as if you were a patient asking for advice. Many case studies and anecdotes from Corio's own patients make The Change lively and involving. --Joan Price

EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK FOR WOMEN 35 AND OVER.......2005-09-30
I AM 41 NOW AND THIS BOOK HAS HELPED ME A LOT, AS A MATTER OF FACT THIS IS THE SECOND ONE I BUY, I GAVE MY FIRST TO A FRIEND, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT ! COVERS EVERYTHING WE GO THROUGH, THE TITLE IS VERY APPROPRIATE, THE CHANGE BEFORE THE CHANGE, READ IT!
One Of The Better Ones.......2004-02-13
While this book didn't answer all of my questions, it did go a long way toward assisting me in understanding what in the h*ll is going on with my body and mind. Dr Corio's attitude is straightforward; her advice seems logical - and dovetails with everything else I've been reading. Plus, she dishes out a goodly amount of common sense with her suggestions about supplements, vitamins, and minerals.
One caveat: This book was published before HRT was recognized as an unacceptable therapy for menopausal symptoms. Dr Corio, however, favors natural remedies over HRT in most cases, something that's comforting in a book published in 2000.
I heartily recommend this as an addition to any woman's wellness library.
Thank you Dr Laura!.......2003-06-14
Excellent book, great suggestions for relief, easy read
Awesome book. So informative and encouraging.......2002-11-11
As an Labor and Delivery nurse, I have to get Continuing Educational Units for my license. This book was the text book for a at-home course. Anyway, knowing that I have some of the symptoms of perimenopause, I wanted to learn more about what I was going through and where it was all going. This book did all that and more.
Excellently written for the lay person or professional. Covers symptoms, pathophysiology (what is going on in the body), what to expect, what to do about it.....and maybe what other physical problems may be occurring that are not related to perimenopause and could be misdiagnosed.
The book made me giggle several times...."oh yeah, I am doing that...oh and that, too. You learn that you are not losing your mind, that it is all a natural process and YES, you can do something about it to ease the journey.
Actually, the woman's body is pretty amazing. It goes through so many changes throughout life. Sure keeps life interesting...grin.
So now I am purchasing the book for my friend...who ran out of the restaurant/bar the other night having a hot flash...she worries that something is not right...grin.
I am sure this will help.
this misses the point.......2001-09-07
This has a nice rahrah tone, but doesn't have the information or support suggestions I found in THE PAUSE by Dr. Lonnie BArbach -- a book I'm very glad my doctor recommended when I expressed my disappointment in this one. In THE PAUSE I found the kind of detail interpretation and facts which explained not just physical and emotional symptoms, but ways of handling them. It really helped me get going again and I recommend it instead.

Customer Reviews:
A nice read.......2006-03-16
I picked up some very good information in this book, but some of it is not in a usable format. The most helpful part of this book was noting various types of fruit that are the best, what item should be used for what type of application, advice on various brands the author thinks are best (I did disagree once or twice...for example she recommends bouillion cubes for making sauces and soups) THIS part is invaluable. Overall though, I did not learn as much new information as I had hoped, but primarily the 4 star is because it is hard to reference in this book, so you have to rely on your memory...
A peachy book!.......2006-02-23
As a hobbyist chef who enjoys entertaining friends and associates at dinner parties, I found the book filled with interesting tips, which might have been useless to more professional chefs but added to my more limited store of kitchen techniques. And the book is written in such a way that it compelled me just to read it, even when I wasn't looking for a specific suggestion or solution.
What a Book!.......2004-11-17
I recently developed a great interest in cooking, but didn't know what to get, what the differences betweenproducts were, what to use with what, etc. I cook for my boyfriend and myself every night and try to make different and exciting dishes, but in order to do that, you need to know specifics and understand some basics. That is what this book gives. I've always searched for a cookbook that I could read through easily without constantly having to checking other parts of the book for clarification. I've only gone through the first chapter "Kitchen Equipment & Utensils," but it's amazing how much knowledge I've already learned. I used to go into stores like Sur La Table because I always loved cooking equipment, but I never understood what the many utensils were meant to do. This book has helped me with a lot of basics - like what the differences are between cast-iron skillets, sauce pans, copper pans, etc. Also, she gives you tips throughtoutthe book - how to season the skillet, maintain your wooden cutting board, and much more. They're things you would normally learn from your mother. For someone who is just getting into cooking, she provides her favorite labels on things from types of equipment to brands of olive oil. I just got the book yesterday and haven't been able to put it down. Also, last night I made one of her recipes, Tuna Tartare. It was REALLY great! I've always ordered it in restaurants, but never tried to make it at home. My boyfriend was saying how he was full and couldn't really eat much. He finished his ENTIRE portion! Great stuff! The ingredients most recipes call for are things you will definitely be able to find at a local fine food/health store. I definitely recommend anyone just getting into cooking to get this book. Easy reading and easy to understand!
Great, Up to Date Reference to Break out of Recipes.......2004-04-16
(...)One can get satisfaction from the fact that this means established writers like Ms. Meyers can put their old wine into new bottles and publish new titles with new twists and new wisdom. The format of this book, `How to Peel a Peach' is a perfect fit for a recognized culinary authority. It collects into a single source all the facts, tips, opinions, and wisdom about food that you may get from a year's viewing the Food Network or a five-year subscription to `Martha Stewart Living'. This is not the kind of material you will typically find in a book by Tom Colicchio or Mario Batali or Eric Rippert or Joel Robuchon. These authors will provide great insights into applying great artistry to superior ingredients. They may even give good information on what makes a great artichoke or a great tomato, but they will not tell you much about the difference between fresh chilies, dried chilies, and chili powder.
The primary strength of the book is precisely in it's pulling together between one pair of covers just about any information you may commonly want about fruits and vegetables and starches and fats and fish and chickens and so on... Almost all of the information is presented in a question and answer format, which has an appeal, but which has some drawbacks in a book that attains its greatest value as a reference. I suspect the format leads to inconsistent coverage of similar topics and misses on showing the similarities in cooking, for example, squid, octopus, and cuttlefish.
Another major strength of this book is that almost all the information in the book is top quality. I was truly impressed by the consistent quality of the advice from page to page and from subject to subject. I failed to find any general statement with which I would argue. There were some specifics on which I suspect the author may have not been careful enough to avoid short-term changes in the marketplace. On mustards, for example, she quite correctly gives the same opinion as a recent `Cooks Illustrated' article, saying that Dijon mustard has a relatively short shelf life. A good mustard may hold its bite for maybe about three months. Like `Cooks Illustrated' nine months ago, Ms. Meyers endorses the Maille brand of Dijon and discounts the American brand Gray Poupon. As luck would have it, in a recent article, `Cooks Illustrated' revisited mustards and found that aging bottles of Maille could not compare to a fresh bottle of Gray Poupon. Culinary wisdom changes and my observation is that Ms. Meyers is up to date on almost every issue. On seasoning meat, the latest thinking is to do it before searing. Ms. Meyers endorses this.
Yet another strength of the book is that the author is clearly not relying entirely on her own opinion. For many questions, the author quotes recognized authorities such as Maida Heather and Shirley Corriher especially on baking issues on which Ms. Meyer honestly confesses to not be an authority. The reliance on experts extends to referring to their books for important recipes as when she refers us to Julie Sahni and Madhur Jaffrey for recipes of garam masala.
One general argument I have with the book one I pick with every author who makes recommendations on things you should keep in your pantry. Buying any product with the expectation you will use it on some yet to be decided recipe is an invitation to waste. Ironically, my opinion on this is backed by none other than Madhur Jaffrey who answered the question on what to stock in the pantry by saying `Nothing'. Her solution is to shop only for the recipes that appeal to you. Eventually, you are sure to build up a supply of things you really need. Another general weakness I find in this book is the recipes. They seem to have no connection to the Q and A, and their choice seems to have no pattern. There are also some rather serious copy editing errors as when the roasting temperature for a roast duck was not stated.
The value you find in this book will depend on how much you already know and your style of cooking.

Book Description
What determines the size and form of redistributive programs, the extent and type of public goods provision, the burden of taxation across alternative tax bases, the size of government deficits, and the stance of monetary policy during the course of business and electoral cycles? A large and rapidly growing literature in political economics attempts to answer these questions. But so far there is little consensus on the answers and disagreement on the appropriate mode of analysis.
Combining the best of three separate traditions--the theory of macroeconomic policy, public choice, and rational choice in political science--Torsten Persson and Guido Tabellini suggest a unified approach to the field. As in modern macroeconomics, individual citizens behave rationally, their preferences over economic outcomes inducing preferences over policy. As in public choice, the delegation of policy decisions to elected representatives may give rise to agency problems between voters and politicians. And, as in rational choice, political institutions shape the procedures for setting policy and electing politicians. The authors outline a common method of analysis, establish several new results, and identify the main outstanding problems.
Customer Reviews:
The best Political Science AND Economics book.......2003-04-08
The authors understand that the study of political institutions drives political science and apply economic principles to do this methodologically. This book evaluates various political institutions in their barest forms and derives intuitive results for their expected performance using elementary economic modelling techniques. The book logically extends its arguments and provides interesting normative evaluations as well. The authors are pioneers in what they do, but, unfortunately, are not likely to be accepted as mainstream political scientists.
Book Description
Absorbing, exceptionally detailed study by noted authority examines early trends (including the influence of Blake and the Pre-Raphaelites), posters and book illustrations, stylistic influences in architecture; furniture, jewelry, and other applied arts; painting and sculpture; and the eclipse of the style. Perceptive discussions of many artists associated with the movement, among them Alphonse Mucha, Aubrey Beardsley, and William Morris.
Customer Reviews:
excellent reference material.......2005-01-08
This book covers, more than any other book I have seen, the evolution of Art Nouveau. The information is broken down into different countries and influences. Unfortunately, all of the photographs are printed in black and white, frequently with poor contrast. The photos are helpful for explaining the text, but it would have been nice if someone had paid a little more attention to how they were printed.
Something important to know about this book that I didn't, is that this book was written in 1955 (in Norway). The text is incredibly thorough, but when the author starts comparing the work to the work of 'today', he is referring to the 1950s. We all know that the 50's dont look like design today. This is a person who had not yet experienced many future design movements such as post-modernism. Regardless, if you are interested in the history and development of Art Nouveau/Jugenstil, this book will certainly be helpful.

A Must Have Book if You Love Camelias.......2007-03-13
This book contains all you want to know about ALL camelias. Contains valuable references to all types available. I have not found any book that is as complete as this one. The photos are very accurate and can be used like a field guide. [...] has the best price on this book so it's a great reference and super value.
Beautiful camelias.......2007-02-21
I bought this book to help identify my camelias. It has helped some, but this book also deals with the newest camelias. All of mine are at least about fifty ro more years old. I do not know if they are nativie to Alabama, but likely they are. It is still a very good book and well written
Beautiful book on Camellias.......2006-11-07
This is a great reference on Camellias. It tells you all about the different types and their bloom times. Best of all, it has tons of pictures - all close up of a bloom so you know exactly what each camellia looks like. An essential resource for anyone wanting to research what camellias to purchase.
Comprehensive.......2005-09-08
It was a huge help in identifying for purchase 50 new plants for our garden. Beautiful pictures and an excellent history included.
If you love camellias ..........2002-05-10
This is clearly a niche book, but it contains a wealth of information about camellias, and pictures of a large number of varieties. I have yet to encounter a better book for a camellia lover.

Customer Reviews:
Dreadful.......2007-05-21
This book was required for a graduate course in visual communications. The book is written in a style of chest-puffing academic balderdash that renders it useless and unreadable. Crummy paper and truly ugly illustrations add to the miasma. I usually keep classroom texts but I'm selling back this one. I won't get much money though because it's so poorly bound that it looks much more used than it really was. Poor unlucky student who buys it.
Poor quality.......2005-09-12
The content of this book is not bad, but the actual quality of product is horrendous.
I have had this text for about a week and the pages have already become unbound. Some of the pages look like they were printed on a photocopier running out of ink. The text is fine, but the graphs look terrible. One would think that a book about design would have put more thought into their own design and production run.
My gripe is simply that this book is too much money for the truly piss-poor physical quality. $76 for a book whose binding became unglued in the first week? $76 for a text whose pages look like they were printed on with an empty toner cartridge? This is a sick joke! Designing Visual Language is a piece of junk and Allyn & Bacon should be ashamed of themselves for having no quality control.
Addendum...
I'm wondering why people have not found this review helpful. Is it because they want to buy a book that is poorly made? If so, I invite you to buy the book. Unless Allyn & Bacon make some serious changes, you'll soon think, "Maybe his review WAS helpful after all!" but by that time you'll be out $76.
Designing Visual Language.......2001-07-14
It reads kind of like a text book, but the information is very good. I am trying to learn about graphic design in my free time and this book has helped me to better understand the basics of visual communication. I have also reciently read "The non-designers design book", which I also recommend. This book starts at the beginning and helps you to understand what you must do, and take into account in order to make something visually pleasing. It has helped me in my design efforts. The book was lent to me and now I plan on buying it, it was so good. I might even look into the rest of the books in the series. (The Allyn & Bacon series in Technical Communication) All in all a good book. I give it 4 stars

Six Women's Slave Narratives (Schomburg Library of Nineteenth Century Black Women Writers)
ASIN: 0195052633 |
Book Description
None but those who resided in the South during the time of slavery can realize the terrible punishments that were visited upon the slaves. Virtue and self-respect were denied them. -Octavia Albert in The House of Bondage With a fiery, righteous rage, former slave Octavia Albert set about, after Emancipation, collecting the true stories of those that "terrible institution" affected most. That raw material gave rise to The House of Bondage, a refutation to Uncle Tom's Cabin, and an answer to other works of literature of the period that purported to show the horror of slavery even though their authors had never set foot in the South. First published in 1890, this is an important example of a sadly small genre: 19th-century literature by African-American women. With its straightforward and heartbreaking litany of cruelty at the hands of slaveowners, families forever divided, and the harsh effects of particularly hard labor, this is an unforgettable work that should be read by every American who thinks he knows his nation's history. Teacher and social activist OCTAVIA V. ROGERS ALBERT (1853-c.1890) was born into slavery in Georgia; after Emancipation, she studied at Atlanta University.

A book to be passed down from generation to generation..........1999-02-26
Narrated by Octavia Albert, this book documents the true stories of several former slaves, their personal views, their struggles, and their triumphs. The stories are heartfelt and the convictions of the author to pass on the history of her people are evident in her dedicated writing.
