Book Description
Internationally bestselling author Häkan Nesser makes his U.S. debut with this riveting tale of murder and suspense that reveals the deep humanity of the characters portrayed even as it sends chills up the spine.
Chief Inspector Van Veeteren is called to the sleepy coastal town of Kalbringen to assist the local police in the investigation of two recent ax murders. Soon the case turns from bad to worse when another body turns up and one of Van Veeteren’s colleagues, a young female detective, disappears without a trace. Now Van Veeteren must find the killer, and, it is hoped, his colleague, before anyone else comes to harm. Riveting and intellectually satisfying, Borkmann’s Point unfolds like a chess match where each move could prove deadly.
Customer Reviews:
This was a World of Words July Choice.......2007-08-29
My reading group, a World of Words, chose this book for the July meeting. It was a fun and fast read, not that the pace was necessarily fast, but it was quick to read. This may be due, in part, to the fact that we had just finished Blindness and A Dictionary of Maqiao, both which were quite different from the Van Veeteren Mystery. The members of the group agreed with me that we could not put the book down, but one of the members commented that he liked to follow the clues, and he found no clues to follow in this book. I have no reference for other Swedish mystery, detective novels, but I can reference several I've read that are American, and I enjoyed this one more than some American detective novels. I liked the fact that I did not know who did the crime on the first or second page. I felt as though I might have been missing something, though, when it came to the characters. I've read other books out of order, and many of them can stand on their own, but I felt as though I needed to have read the earlier book, if there was one, to get to know Van Veeteren better. Perhaps the following book in the series may shed more light for me. The inclusion of chess in the book was quite interesting. I am not knowledgeable about chess, but I imagine that there were some clues set forth in the game. I look forward to reading more books by this author. I'm not sure that the book kept me, as the San Francisco Chronicle claims, "on the edge of your seat," but I enjoyed the lighter reading and the mystery. It was not a book I wanted to put down. I read it in only a couple of days.
slow read.......2007-08-13
Ordered several books by this author.
Based on reviews.
I found the books, slow, mild plots. More involved with the inspectors drinking and chess. For the first time, I will be returning books I ordered.
Borkmann's Point.......2007-08-03
This thoughtful and enjoyable Swedish crime novel uncovers the sadness and corruption that lie beneath the beauty of the little port of Kaalbringen. Murder of a particularly brutal kind has been committed, and intuitive Chief Inspector Van Veeteren has interrupted his vacation to assist the local police catch the serial killer. The glimpses into the lives of the thoroughly believable characters, particularly the police, are compelling. Author Hakan Nesser suggests beautifully the frustrations of police work and the difficulty of combining it with a personal life. And while the task is grim, the novel is full of humor. Whether or not you see the end coming, it can't fail to touch you. Well worth reading.
Interesting story, obvious conclusion.......2007-06-21
The author continues the recent trend in police procedurals of whatever nation to flesh out the personal lives of the several police personnel involved, not just the chief protagonist. This grounds the story and makes it more believable. But is there anyone who doesn't figure out "who dunnit" before the first third of the book is over? I hope to read some of Nesser's other books to see if the conclusion is always so obvious--I understand it isn't--so will give him another chance. But still, a good read.
The author beguiles the mind.......2007-05-12
In this well-reviewed mystery, Nesser introduces an inspector of solid character and an acute intellectual presence. Yet, the plot does not fit the denoument--there is just a bit too much slipperiness between clues held back and the final solution. The character and the evocative writing are enough for me to try another one, though.
Book Description
Kasche Arbadel is the most promising summoning student in the School of Sorcery. Her preternatural empathy with beasts, allows her to control monsters well beyond her training, but it also causes her to share their pain. Trouble seems to follow her wherever she goes, and her reckless behavior nearly made her department bankrupt. When a magical relic is stolen from the Summoning department's vaults, Kasche is sent in pursuit. But finding the thief is only the beginning of her adventure. Kasche uncovers an evil Marquise's plot to overthrow the kingdom by using the legendary ENCYCLOPEDIA VERUM, an ancient tome containing the summoning names of the most powerful monsters ever seen. Working with him is Eclipse, an inhuman summoner who dabbles in the forbidden art of necromancy.
Customer Reviews:
Gotta catch 'em all!.......2006-03-07
In what seems like a fusing of Slayers and Final Fantasy, Monster Collection is an original fantasy adventure from Itoh Sei. This takes place in an alternate world where magic is a common thing.
Set in a midevil enviroment, Kasche is a summoner in training whose been given the mission of finding who stole an ancient artifact which is supposed to have a clue to where the Encylopedia Verum is. It is not your normal kind of book, but a great spellbook that can give its user access to summoning some of the most powerful monsters in all creation.
Kasche discovers that the artifact was stolen by a desert thief. She tracks him down, only to be attacked by a lamia, which is a snakewoman, sort of like a naga. After a little struggle, Kasche frees the lamia, whose name is Natasha, from the control of whoever has originally summoned her. Natasha has the ability to take on full human form, and decides to help Kasche find their mutual advisary. The thief, Cuervo joins them too on their journey.
Monster Collection is an exceptionally well drawn manga. The art is very stylish and effective. The story seems a little similar to ones in other funny fantasy manga like Rune Soldier and Sorcerer Hunters. However, it is entertaining and interesting enough to keep you wanting for more. Something good for furries and otaku!

Book Description
The American Association of Retired Persons estimates that the number of communities for seniors has doubled in the past ten years and will more than double again before the turn of the century. With estimated annual revenues of $14 billion, the industry is expected to grow dramatically -- to $30 billion by the year 2000. This explosive growth has meant that new administrators and staff often are learning by trial and error the complicated task of delivering high-quality and consistent services to elderly persons. While many new facilities have been successful, others have found themselves plagued by a variety administrative and financial difficulties. Operators, developers, lenders, and staff members are attending conferences in record numbers, eager for practical answers to management challenges.
In Senior Living Communities Benjamin Pearce offers the first comprehensive guide to managing these important facilities. Drawing on years of experience running successful retirement communities, Pearce offers a wealth of sound advice and practical solutions. He discusses operating methods, staffing ratios, department management, cost containment, sales and marketing strategies, techniques of financial analysis, budgeting, and human resources. He also offers specific details on resident relations, transportation, activities, food service, housekeeping, laundry, and maintenance. An extensive operations audit is included in an appendix.
As Americans of the baby boom generation approach their senior years, society must prepare a strategy for accommodating this burgeoning population. Senior Living Communities will prove an indispensable source of information and advice on various aspects of these rapidly growing facilities, including development, finance, investment, operations, improvement, and marketing.
Customer Reviews:
Outdated Information.......2007-01-11
When I received a e-mail advertising this book, I thought it was new material. Out of the box, the browning faded paper told me that this was a very old publication, not worth looking at. The changes in the industry in the last few years have been such that current information is essential. I returned the book within 24 hours. It advertising material to potential readers, it should be made clear that this is very outdated material and not a new edition or remotely current information.
Really good for those interested in assisted living needs.......2003-02-11
I needed information on how to finance, build and market senior housing. The information in this book on elderly and handicapped housing needs is really helpful to me. This is well done, and those of us not part of the industry can understand it.
An essential part of your long-term care management library........2003-01-25
Pearce has done an excellent job of writing a sentinel primer for managing long-term care communities. The details are all there. Of even greater importance, the details are presented within the context of critical principles that distinguish the excellent community from the average or mediocre. As a faculty member responsible for a number of long-term care management courses at two schools of public health, this is one of a very limited number of texts that I assign as "must reads" for my students.
A Detailed and Complete Guide on Senior Living Communities.......2003-01-22
I truly enjoyed "Senior Living Communities: Operations Management and Marketing for Assisted Living, Congregate, and Continuing Care Retirement Communities". It answered most of the questions that I had on developing a community for senior living. I feel a social calling to provide for the housing and care needs of the elderly. The Senior Care track was adopted as a part of the Masters of Real Estate degree that I am enrolled in. This book was used in one of my classes. What a blessing! As I began to read this book, I realized that most of the "concise details" in developing a community are all in there. I am so amazed to see such valuable information each time I turn the page. The author has addressed the obvious and the important things that often are forgotten. This book is like the bible of developing successful senior living communities. The knowledge gained by reading this book will definitely create the foundation for the development of a successful project.
Senior Living Communities.......2002-01-22
Though this book may have been intended as a how-to for Benjamin Pearce's colleagues in the trade, it is thoroughly readable and complete. As someone who contemplates eventual entry into a Continuing Care Retirement Community, I found explanations for much that I have observed in the community where my own parents reside as well as what I have seen in the near dozen that I have toured. The intelligent consumer could not find a better way to be educated about the subject than to delve into the outline of management and practices that the author details. This will be a useful handbook for me for hopefully many years to come.

Customer Reviews:
Great book!.......2006-06-24
I LOVE this cookbook -- all the recipes are so easy and delicious! I love to cook, but when I get home from work the last thing I want to do is spend hours in the kitchen, especially in the summer. The book claims that all these recipes can be made in 30 mins or less, and so far it hasn't disappointed!
For All Who Love Italian Food.......2005-09-25
I bought this as a gift and now wish I had a copy for myself. The idea of limited ingredients, few steps and under 30 minute preparation sounds perfect for our busy lives.
The recipes sound so enticing: Sauteed Bass with Fresh Tomatoes and Basil, Baked Spinach with Garlic Bread Crumbs, Baked Apples with Mascarpone Cheese. Think of bringing the flavors of "Olive Garden" to your table at home.
After each recipe there are simple tips and variations or ways to dress the recipe up.
(I hope you find this review helpful, and if you do, please click yes.)
Book Description
The first in-depth treatment of all the breeds of Japanese dog.
Finally, the first book to treat not just the Akita or the shiba but all breeds of Japanese dogs.
Japanese Dogs introduces the ten main breeds?the Akita, Shiba, Kishu, Shikoku, Kai, Hokkaido, Japanese Spitz, Japanese Terrier, Chin, and Tosa Fighting Dog. It shows each of these ten dogs in stunning color photographs and describes in detail each dog's distinctive physical characteristics,
temperament, and behavior.
The book traces the history of the largest organization in Japan for preserving and protecting the breeds?known as Nippo?as well as the Nippo Standard for the Japanese Dog and the way that judging is conducted at Nippo shows. It traces the history of the dog in Japan, including the two times in the
twentieth century when?due first to war and then a distemper epidemic?all the breeds were in imminent danger of extinction, and how they were brought back to their current numbers and level of popularity.
Japanese Dogs outlines the dogs' traditional use?still sometimes seen in the countryside?as partners in hunting wild animals such as boar and bear. It describes the close bond that was essential between hunter and hunting dog, and the way that this capacity for bonding has been bred into the dogs
for generations, so that today too, as pets, they tend to be boundlessly loyal.
The book includes stories about well-known dogs like Hachiko, the Akita who waited outside a Tokyo train station every evening for his master's return for nearly ten years after the master had passed away, until the dog's own death; Hachiko is commemorated in a statue that stands outside that same
station. Or Tama, the Shiba that saved her owner?a hunter in snowy, mountainous country?from being buried in snow not just once, but three times.
The book also describes an unusual breed, the Jomon Shiba?a contemporary dog that has been bred, on the basis of fossil remains, to resemble as closely as possible a long-extinct breed from Paleolithic times. Much more wolflike and regal-looking than the wildly popular Shiba, this dog has also
gained many devoted fanciers, although it is completely unknown to most Japanese people.
In addition to thirty-two pages of color photos, Japanese Dogs is illustrated throughout with numerous black-and-white photos of other, lesser known breeds, scenes from dog shows, archaeological finds, and ukiyoe and other paintings Japanese Dogs is sure to be of interest to enthusiasts of any of
the Japanese breeds, and to admirers of dogs everywhere.
- Heavily Illustrated Throughout
- 32 Pages of Color Photos
- A Wealth of Information on Japan's 10 Fascinating Dog Breeds
Customer Reviews:
Thorough, objective.......2006-09-13
I like this book. It's thorough, objective and it doesn't glorify or over-emphasize the positives and negatives of the Japanese breeds. It offers an indepth history about the breeds, while not presenting speculation as fact. The photos are good eye-candy too. I really enjoyed seeing and reading about the Japanese standard. I would highly recommend this book to anyone collecting books about any of the Japanese breeds.
Shibas roxxor!.......2005-08-22
The pictures in this book are awesome, and the detailed histories of the Japanese breeds are great. My only complaint is that the Akitas appear rather scruffy in some of the pictures but otherwise, this book is a must have for anyone interested in the Japanese breeds.
A very good appetizer of a book but..........2004-02-01
A good, well written, well translated overview of the various Japanese breeds, including the popular Shiba and Akita. The photos are gorgeous and I wish there were more. If I had one complaint about this book, it's that it left me wanting to read, and look at, more, so hence the not-quite-top rating. Also, this book presents the profoundly moving story of the legendary Hachiko and a few other tales of amazing dogs.
Great History and stories.......2003-09-08
This book does what the title says - describe Japanese dogs in good pictures and summaries. I've only owned a Shiba but I agree with EVERYTHING the author wrote about them. I also liked the tid-bits on dogs in the Asian region because I've run into a few Korean Jindo dogs. Her stories at the end were great to emphasize the 'personalities' of each breed.

Book Description
Many people are looking for alternative heat sources from oil, wood, and electricity. This book will tell them all they need to know about coal heat. Coal is cheaper in many parts of the country than other fuels. It is safer than wood because it does not have creosote buildup, and coal is easier to handle with less work. This book tells them practical ideas and facts so that their use of coal can be safe and efficient. In homes and small commercial buildings, coal can be used to special advantage when chosen and burned properly. The book covers types and availability of coal, maintenance, conversion of furnaces to coal. Sections are devoted specifically to the use of coal to heat water, as space heaters, in fireplaces, and overall living conditions with coal use.
Book Description
Why do gardeners start plants from seed instead of just buying a flat of seedlings from their local nursery? Necessity. Seedlings of unusual or exotic plants simply aren't available at garden stores, but they are available in seed. Then there's the cost factor. A few packets of seeds are much cheaper than dozens upon dozens of seedlings. And finally there's the plants' health to consider. Plants grown from seed get a healthy start that can almost guarantee you a magnificent display in your garden. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom will teach you everything you need to know to germinate and grow more than 500 types of flowering plants. For every plant listed you'll find precise information on whether it will do well in your part of the country; how to sow seeds indoors and outdoors; when to transplant indoor seedlings out in the garden; what light, soil, and spacing requirements are necessary; general plant care; when you can expect the plants to flower; how to encourage more blooms; and how to propagate your plants by cutting, division, layering, or detaching runners.
The book also features more than 500 full-color flower photographs. A quick-reference chart outlines bloom time, color, height, and site requirements for more than 1,000 species, making this book an indispensable reference for planning and planting fabulous gardens.

starting flowers.......2007-08-07
I used this book extensivly this spring for starting all my flowers and veggie. I found it easy to use and most flowers etc were listed. Great book for my library and I will use it in the future for sure.
Excellent.......2007-02-26
This book is an excellent reference book describing seeds.
Giving the botanical name and common name. Most helpful with information on germination and were the seeds will grow best. And the the section that has thumbnail pictures
is excellent. The ease of using the paperback is all so great.
Great book!.......2007-01-04
Bought this for my wife and she loves it! She was reading this book like a novel. Provides good information and tips on a wide range of flowers. Bought this book due to good reviews as well!
Excellent book, but NOTE..........2006-04-07
This book is exactly what I was looking for-- a no-nonsense, complete description of how to start each of the many kinds of seeds that I can never resist buy, collecting, or trading for.
One thing that people should note, though: the plants are listed in alphabetical order by their Latin names. There is an appendix that has the common names and what the Latin name is for each, but I can't imagine doing that for every single plant-- what a pain! I like to know both Latin and common names, so I was fine with this system. But for someone who's only familiar with the common names of plants, this book is going to be a lot harder to use. (On the bright side, learning the Latin names can be a lot of fun, so if you're at all open to the idea, go for it!)
Really and truly useful.......2004-08-10
When a friend recently asked me to suggest a book that would tell her the soil preferences of different flowers, I knew exactly what she needed. The Gardener's A-Z Guide to Growing Flowers from Seed to Bloom has all the answers. In addition to concise profiles of 500 bloomers, there's a handy gallery of color photographs and my favorite section, a 50-page chart that lists major and minor species along with their bloom times, colors, and cultural requirements. This book is designed to be useful, and it is!

Worthy of exegetical debate and ecumenical dialogue........1999-07-14
It was John Calvin who suggested that the N. T. is commentary on the Hebrew scriptures, while Karl Barth insisted on repeated and renewed exegesis. The long years of history have a tendency to develop into hardened dogma and Christianity is no exception. In the light of the above, "The Open Tomb" should be seriously considered as a candidate for exegetical debate. Also, since Christianity has its roots in the Hebrew scriptures, "The Open Tomb" could well serve as a door for ecumenical relations. Instead of trying to piece together the fractions of Christianity, it may be more appropriate and in the long run more advantageous, to begin with its roots, in Israel.

Book Description
Text and Interpretation gives an insight into the many different approaches that more recent South African scholarship has adopted in the interpretation of the New Testament. While the number of approaches in New Testament interpretation has proliferated over the past few years, all the proposals still fall under one of the three traditional poles: sender (author) - text - receptor (reader). Classified according to this division each chapter has a twofold aim. Firstly, the perspective is situated within a wider framework of interpretation to illustrate the context out of which this approach emerges. Secondly, each article has selected a particular New Testament text to demonstrate this approach in practice. The authors of these chapters - the majority of which are South African scholars - were chosen because of their expertise in their specific fields. By presenting these studies together in one collection, the scholarship in these different areas will become more readily accessible to a wider group of scholars.
