BUBBLES ABLAZE is the third in the Bubbles series by Sarah Strohmeyer. In the opening chapter, Bubbles is waiting in a room at the Passion Peak Resort, not too far from the nearby town of Slagville, for the love of her life Stiletto to show up for a rendezvous. It will be their first night of "sexual intimacy" and Bubbles cannot wait! However Stiletto is late, and she's beginning to worry. When the front desk delivers her a fax from the News-Times (the paper she works for), she is upset to be interrupted but duty calls. Per the fax, she is to go out to an abandoned coal mine in Slagville to report on a murder, along with other fellow reporters. Bubbles doesn't question the information and rushes to the scene of the crime. She is always looking for that big story that will prove her worth to her boss Mr. Salvo.
What happens when she shows up is the start of another set of adventures for Bubbles. First, she discovers she's the only one to show up for this news conference, and finds a car with the license place STINKYK4 nearby. Stinky! He's the practical joker married to her cousin Roxanne. Bubbles is furious, thinking that Stinky decided to play a practical joke on her while she was waiting to have her little rendezvous with Stiletto. But when she hears gunshots, she goes into the coal mine and inside a car she finds the bloodied body of her beloved Stiletto! He's ok, but they also find a dead body nearby...
The novel wouldn't be complete without the supporting characters - Lulu Yablonsky, Bubbles' crazy mother, Lulu's sidekick Genevieve, and Jane's, Bubbles' teenage daughter who seems to have fallen for her professor! The story in BUBBLES ABLAZE revolves around the town of Limbo, a town that is pretty much deserted because of a perpetual coal mining fire burning beneath the town. It is politics and greed at the forefront, while Bubbles tries to write her story and solve the mystery behind the murders that seem to be tied to Stinky somehow.
The Bubbles series seems to get better after each book. While there are some similarities to the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich, Bubbles is unique. Both heroines are blue collar but can Stephanie Plum boast that she can color and set someone's hair? Bubbles' charm is in her style - her loud clothing and her keen sense of fashion (ha ha!). She also isn't too bright but at the same time, she surprises everyone by always solving the mystery ahead of the police. Stiletto, the AP photographer, seems to elude her but we do know that he loves her (he's said so!) and while Stephanie Plum may never get her man, I think there is hope for Bubbles.

This is the third entry in a slapdash, over-the-top mystery series featuring Bubbles Yablonsky, a hairdresser who looks like trailer trash but who longs to become a respected journalist. On the way to her goal, she stumbles and bumbles into one mystery after another, with the aid and support of the Mel-Gibson-esque Steve Stilleto, a top-level news photographer, whom she met on her first assignment.
Bubbles lives in a small blue/black-collar town in a part of America usually forgotten - the coal mines of Pennsylvania. Every character has a story connected to mining; Bubbles' father was killed when she was a young girl because, her family believes, he was a union organizer. Steve, the estranged step-son of a ruthless mine owner, hates his connection to the misery wreaked by Big Coal on innocent men and women.
It's almost impossible to describe a Strohmeyer plot; in a review of an earlier book in the series I think I said she used every idea she ever had. In my 40-some years of mystery-reading I can't think of a more convoluted (and somewhat ridiculous and highly unbelievable) plot.
In this outing Bubbles has left hairdressing for journalism and gets involved in a life-threatening, mysterious "accident" in a mine thought to be dormant and where a murder occurs while she and Steve are there after receiving mysterious messages. The race is on, with casino gambling, underground mine fires, a pierogi fight and who-knows-what's-next among the dozen or so plots and sub-plots.
Normally that would bother me. But Strohmeyer has a tremendous gift for creating eccentric characters, ones you usually can't help but love and want more of. Bubbles can spot a phony ten miles away, but her big heart accepts even the strangest individual, if s/he is hurt and honest (except the multi-pierced "G," a suitor for the hand of her beloved, ultra-smart daughter, Jane, whom she has raised single-handedly and for whom she wants a better future than that which Bubbles endured.
Strohmeyer's work resembles that of reigning working-class detectives' Queen Janet Evanovich, but I like Bubbles and her crew more (making me, a NJ native, a traitor of sorts). Their stories, like Bubbles, continue to develop in each book. Your suspension of disbelief will have to be extra-willing at times, but the fun to be had makes it worthwhile.

Bubbles Ablaze is the third book and has flavors of the first book `Bubbles Unbound.' This story is focused on a small town and a coalmine murder. Good For a Unique Read.......1997-04-13
We all tend to read certain types of books. Me especially. When I picked up an ENDWORLD book, I was puzzled. I wondered why I did it. Then I read it. It was a refreshing change from the norm. ENDWORLD is about a group of people whom have survived World War III and are now living in a whole new world. One thing that I really liked was that the protagonists were actually heroes.. Unbelievable. It has a good sense of humor too. I'm not saying this book is the best, it is far from that. But it is a refreshing, fun read that can give you a good dose of entertainment between reading your choice of "normal" types of books

Quaint, but not what I was looking for.......2007-01-09
I was trying to find a desk reference or "materia medica" of sorts for using homeopathy with animals. I have been brought up on homeopathic care for myself above going to doctors for colds, allergies and the like so now that I have a cat I am beginning to question typical veterinary practice, especially since my cat was prescribed amoxicillin for an upper respiratory cold and it was even flavored orange - you can imagine trying to give that to an animal that would prefer fish over citrus.
This book had some cute illustrations but was more of a story-book that I would have really had to read through all of than a quick, practical reference that I could turn to in recognising and treating symptoms.

My second favorite reference book when it comes to the homeopathic treatment of cats, and my number one choice when it comes to acute health situations. The conditions are in alphabetical order, so you can find the information you need in a hurry. This book is quite simple to use, especially if you have little or no background in homeopathy.

Homeopathic First Aid for Animals: Tales and Techniques from a Country Practitioner, by by Kaetheryn Walker is probably the first book I reach for when a medical crisis arises. While this is not the book one needs to search for consitutional remedies, it is a must for those sudden acute conditions that pop up unexpectedly. As the manager of a small feline sanctuary where I care for over 40 cats, I recommend this book highly.

The technique of Hardstone mosaic was developed in the sixteenth century under the patronage of the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, in parallel with the revival of Roman mosaics made from tiny tesserae. Complex images were created from a matrix of coloured marbles and semiprecious stones, selected and cut with breathtaking craftsmanship. During the seventeenth century the technique was used in the production of some of the most magnificent luxury objects in Italy; in the eighteenth century, panels of landscapes, birds and flowers were incorporated into furniture and snuffboxes. This gave way in the nineteenth century to the production of pictures in extraordinarily convincing imitation of oil paintings.

This book is very user-friendly and full of helpful information for the amateur gardener, which I am. It is laid out in a very helpful manner and gives much information about each plant discussed, including personal experiences of the author with various perennials. It is filled with lovely color photographs of all the plants, as well as text about each one in alphabetical order. I would recommend it for anyone interested in learning about perennials that work in the climates of Minnesota and Wisconsin.

I've never written a review before, but I really love this book. Any gardener in Minnesota should have this one. It's full of beautiful color pictures and all the information you need to create your own borders: the height, spread and when to expect the bloom. The information is straight to the point and easy to reference.

Finally, after paging through piles of gardening guides, falling in love with flowers and then discovering they grow only in Zone 9-10, I came across this beautiful, handy book. Thoughtfully laid out, the book is an indispensible guide for those of us living in Zones 3-6. The authors are obviously well-versed in gardening in the upper Midwest and have put together this book with beautiful pictures and descriptions of the plants, as well as straight-forward thoughts on growing and maintaining the plants. The perfect book to study during the long cold winters and then take with to the nursery in the spring.

Christian Marclay was born in 1955 in California, but he grew up in Geneva and didn't live in the U.S. again until he returned in 1977 to study art. By 1979, music was Marclay's material of choice. He has since turned a fascination with all aspects of popular recorded sound and cinema into a brilliant career as an artist. As a collector of audio and film, he harnesses his eclectic interests and expansive archive to a practice spanning aural and visual collage and performance, in a layering and sampling aesthetic that has come to be called, after the DJ's tool, turntablism. He has collaborated with musicians including John Zorn, the Kronos quartet, DJ Spooky and Sonic Youth, and appeared or shown his work at venues including The Museum of Modern Art and P.S. 1 in New York. Replay, the first book to focus on his moving image work, gathers his most important films and projections to date. If Marclay's craft of reconstruction is itself musical (the pauses and absences being as much part of the work as the shots and beats), his recompositions also follow a rich heritage of montage within cinema and experimental film.

One time Professional Thief, and one time Bounty Hunter for the FBI and US Marshals, Carlton Enoch tells his life story.
Utilizing a conversational format, the author dictates the traumatic events that marked his childhood, including experiences with his mother's abusive boyfriends, getting caught stealing a toy from a store at a young age, and his first experiences of a sexual nature. Also revealed is the deep love for animals that was formed in those years, indicating a more sensitive side of his personality. Experimentation with drugs and stealing eventually led to a first contact with prison, after which the author relates the business that he began with a partner selling drugs. A moment of enlightenment led to his exploration of the Bible one night, but this was in conjunction with a continued involvement with illegal activity. A relationship with a girlfriend becomes more serious, and they eventually marry and have children together. His spiritual convictions also led to involvement with God, but eventually the marriage and his spirtual convictions collapsed and he began anew. He closes this work with a description of how he came to find work as a respected bounty hunter after meeting Stan Rifkin and working with him.
“Eye See Me” is a candid text intended to underscore the hardships and accomplishments that was experienced throughout the author's life, and he seeks to make the material more accessible to the reader by utilizing a personal approach to his narrative style.

Unbelievable!!! I could not put it down from the time I
opened the cover, it pulled on every imaginable emotion.
This author's true life story presents so
many parallels that we all face in life even though we may
not have actually lived through them. We can all relate to
his pain. All of life's stuff in family and relationships. My
heart went out for him as I could literally feel the pain
come off the pages. The reward for me came in seeing an emotionally challenged youth find
the courage within himself to turn the issues of his life
into personal triumph as an adult.
So many young people have gone through tramatic
experiences and feel there is no hope for a future for
them. Mr. Enoch's life story is a testament to the fact that
the mind is always stronger than the situation and that
one can use the issues of their life as the strength they
need to accomplish more.
Would like to see this one at the movies. Move over Coach
Carter and Andre' Fisher, here comes another amazing
story of personal strength.
Cheers to Mr. Enoch! Can't wait to read the series.
This book is must reading for all Jehovah's Witnesses.......2002-09-17
This book is a must read for all Jehovah's Witnesses. It tells the story of a man and why (and how) he became a Witness and how his religion helped him to turn his life around. The reader must judge the book but it is some story!!! It would make a TV series! The book shows the power of faith to help one get on the right path in life. It also shows the corruption of our society today.
Another Outlook on Life.......2000-09-25
I enjoyed the writing style of this book. The author did an incredible job in getting across his story of his life in the Ghetto. I commend him for stepping out and taking a chance at getting his message across. I look forward to continuing the series.

"Eye See Me" tells the facts about why many of are black men have become an Endangered Species. Carlton seems to be the only black man who tells the whole story.
