Book Description

Bruised in body and psyche from his adventures in At Risk, 22-year-old Steve Cline gets another blow in Dead Man's Touch: the sudden death of his estranged father. But at the funeral, Steve learns that his real father, horse trainer Christopher J. Kessler, is very much alive. Curious, Steve heads for the Maryland track to find Kessler. When Kessler learns that he's a father and Steve is his son, he recruits Steve to work undercover at his training barn to discover who's been doping the most promising horses. Steve settles in and is soon caught up in the unique lifestyle inherent to the "backside." But it is not a life without peril-some men are willing to do anything to get the right horse under the wire first. When a young woman is found dead in a horse's stall, Steve becomes the prime suspect in her murder. Steve must discover the ringleader's identity to keep from being put in jail...or worse, in the ground. "Kit Ehrman has created a driven, principled character and puts him into situations where he must fight for the moral high ground" -The Denver Post "From the labor-intensive work in the oppressive heat of a Maryland summer to the cockroach-infested living quarters of the help, Ehrman creates an authentic and vivid picture of the reality behind the glamour of the races." -Publishers Weekly Kit Ehrman lives and writes on a horse farm near Columbus, Indiana. The second Steve Cline Mystery, Dead Man's Touch follows At Risk and is followed by Cold Burn and Triple Cross. www.kitehrman.com

4 out of 5 stars Another great story.......2005-12-30

I enjoyed this Kit Ehrman book as much as the last. Fast paced, thoughtful and with great characters.

5 out of 5 stars Dead Man's Touch.......2005-10-16

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a wonderful sequel to At Risk. The characters were well developed and believable. I was very involved in what Steve was going through. It was a good story, & I was sorry when it was over, relieved that there was a third book.

3 out of 5 stars Accurate horse-y details.......2005-08-02

The most rewarding aspect of Kit Ehrman's books is the accuracy of the horse details. Nothing is more excrutiating than reading about the "palomino with the long, flowing black fetlock". ;)

The story was well-crafted and suspenseful. But for whatever reason the main character hasn't really grabbed me yet, even after reading the first two offerings in the "Steve Cline" series.

5 out of 5 stars exciting amateur sleuth.......2003-11-26

He saw a man executed and was nearly killed himself. Twenty-two years old Steve Cline has recovered but is still emotionally fragile and unable to return to his job at Foxdale Horse Farm. He is estranged from his wealthy and prominent family but when he learns that his father was killed, he returns home for the funeral. His angry and embittered brother Robert tells Steve that he was not biologically related to the individual he thought was his father.

When he confronts his mother, she admits that his biological father is racehorse trainer Kessler working out of Washington Park. When he finally tells Kessler who he is, the man tells him that he is glad to have a son. When he learns his father is having trouble with an unknown person who wants him to fix the races, Steve volunteers to go undercover to find the guilty parties. In the course of his inquiries, a co-worker is murdered and Steve comes within a pixel of losing his life too.

Kit Ehrman has a unique voice that makes DEAD MAN'S TOUCH an exciting amateur sleuth tale. The protagonist, rather young in physical years, has experienced so much that he comes across as a mature person so familiar with death that he realizes it can strike without warning at anytime. There is a lot of action in this straightforward mystery much of it dealing with a protagonist who refuses to stay down after being threatened and battered. DEAD MAN'S TOUCH is as good as the works of Dick Francis.

4 out of 5 stars The Care and Feeding of Deities.......2002-11-26

It's embarrassing when you are digging through your to be read shelf (shelves) and you discover that a book has managed to get tucked away so well that it has remained hidden for ten years. Sheri Tepper, probably still best known for her True Game series is one of my favorite fantasists. She has an artful way of combining humor, whimsy and drama into works that take frequent unexpected turns and have endearing casts.

'Marianne, the Madame, and the Momentary Gods' is the sequel to 'Marianne, the Magus, and the Manticore,' which I read so long ago that I dare not attempt to remember it. But the heroine is Marianne, a young woman with surprising talents and assets that are coveted by Madame Tabiti Delubovoska, a very nasty witch who has a knack for catapulting her victims into bad places and doing away with anyone who gets in her way. When the Madame kills Marianne's parents and sets out after the young lady, Marianne escapes, and then doubles back on her history to try to set things right.

And this brings us to the current volume, in which Marianne reawakens as a child and starts to relive her live, this time with the assistance of the previous Marianne and 5 dog-like Momentary Gods, who just might control reality. The Madame's attempt on Marianne and her parents is foiled this time. However, Marianne, a bit upset at discovering there are two Marianne's in her head, rebels and sets out to live her own life. Unfortunately, this leaves her vulnerable, and the Madame traps her in a world where nothing stays the same and one needs a new map every day. The Momentary Gods and Makr Avehl (her former lover) come to her rescue, but is will be an intense struggle and a very close thing.

While the concepts that underlie the story are fairly complex, Tepper manages to avoid and gobbledygook in exercising our imaginations. The story is light and charming, perhaps a bit too much of an appetizer than anything else. Even so, the writer shows a talent for social satire in her depiction of the chaotic city. Tepper also makes sure that the reader understands that finding two minds in one body is no trivial thing. Although the story really should be read after it's predecessor, no harm was really done by my memory failure. Even after ten years this is a pleasing confection.

5 out of 5 stars An experiece to remember.......2000-12-08

This haunting book by Sheri S. Tepper draws me back year after year. Images pop into my mind of huge washing machines where people clean and tumble dry their lives and sins. This book has many images that are incredibly vivid.

Marianne is back after finding herself in Marianne the Magus and the Manticore (the first book in the series). She starts her life over again and is transported to a new world with strange rules. This time five helpers/dogs/gods go with her with unique abilities of their own. A girl once abused and withdrawn learns how to live, fight, and trust.

A person can get lost in the deep symbolism apparent in this complex, short novel. This book it can be equally enjoyed by tasting, and feeling the rich tapestry of colors, sights, and smells of this very intriguing book. To read this book is to experiance something totally unlike reality and totally enjoyable. Enjoy the ride.

        Book Description

Infertility is a heartbreaking condition that affects nine million American couples each year. It causes tremendous stress, can trigger debilitating sadness and depression, and can tear a marriage to shreds. In Conquering Infertility, Harvard psychologist Alice Domar—whom Vogue calls the “Fertility Goddess”—provides infertile couples with what they need most: stress relief, support, and hope. Using the innovative mind/body techniques she has perfected at her clinic, Domar helps infertile women not only regain control over their lives but also boost their chances of becoming pregnant.

With Conquering Infertility, women learn how to cope with infertility in a much more positive way and to carve a path toward a rich, full, happy life.

5 out of 5 stars I had the 2002 version of this book..........2007-07-03

I was looking through my past reviews and decided it was important for me to review this book in particular. Let me tell you that I remember breaking down crying (actually was doing a lot of that those days) reading this book. While it had practical advice mentioned in the book, the most important thing was that she UNDERSTOOD how I was feeling, even some feelings I had not had words to describe until I read this book. This book gave me hope and the courage to seek counseling from a doctor who specializes in infertility counseling. The year after I read this book, I finally had the strength to try one last round of IVF. This time we were successful, and now I have 2 beautiful 3 year olds.

5 out of 5 stars great, really helpful.......2007-06-13

this book really helped me a lot. but the first time I read it I thought it was not written for me. it was, and very well. I was just in denial and thought nothing could have helped me in this process. I read it twice and was lucky enough to be part of one of Ali Domar's groups. I have been really surprised of how much I have learned from the book, how helpful it was (and it still is) and what a difference it made. it's a menu of tips and good treatments that you can pick and choose to apply to your life. I have been transformed and I strongly recommended to anyone going through this process and their family and friends who want to be supportive and helpful.

        5 out of 5 stars A lifesaver.......2007-05-28

I felt hopeless, worthless and depressed after my third miscarriage, with a D&C on what had been the due date for a previous pregnancy and with the birth of a good friend's first daughter a week later. Reading this book gave me hope again and helped me acknowledge my feelings of being angry and depressed with not being able to carry to term when everybody around me easily got through pregnancy. This book will probably not give much advice on what to do to make you pregnant and carry to term that you haven't heard already. There just isn't a lot of things you can do. Instead, it offers a lot of advice on how to get through the stress, depression, anger and frustration that comes from the inability to get pregnant or carry to term. It offers ways to get through infertility treatments without having it taking over your life. It taught me simple skills to help me focus on things in my life that are good. After years of saying to myself whenever an acquaintance got pregnant "I wish it was me, but I will never get a baby". I now have hope again, I now have a plan. I may not become a parent easily, but there are still plans B, C, D and E left, and I am still doing this with the man I love. I had lost track of that.

I highly recommend it for when you lost hope, or don't know how to cope with all the babies your friends and colleagues are having.

3 out of 5 stars Conquering Infertility: Dr. Alice Domar's Mind/Body Guide to Enhancing Fertility and Coping with Infertility.......2007-05-14

The book is very informative, but is based on relaxation as the premise for increased fertility. If you are the type of person who does not find relaxation methods inviting, this book is not for you.

2 out of 5 stars nothing new here.......2007-05-13

I didn't find that this book had any new information or forsight into the issue of fertility.

5 out of 5 stars I liked this book very much........2007-08-07

I made the chimchuri sauce...delicious. I also made the short ribs...soooo good. I don't have the book in front of me so I can't tell you the exact names of the recipes...but I will tell you, this is a good book and much better than the celebrity compilation called "Favorites". They called it "Favorites" because it's chocked full of recipes found in other cookbooks that most of you FN fans already own!!!!

The chefs in this cookbook are behind the scenes chefs that make Emeril (think Santos) and company look good. They test the recipes for tv...they know a good recipe when they see one. This book is worth the money!

            2 out of 5 stars What a disappointment.......2004-09-13

I thought this was a collaboration of all the chefs on the
food channel. This book is written by the staff of the food channel kitches, not ie, Rachel Ray, Naked chef, etc.

I was disappointed, the receipes were just so-so.

            5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-02-10

I love to cook, and have at least 20 cookbooks. This one is by far the best I have. Every recipe I have made from the cookbook is amazing. The recipes are very imaginative, but also very easy to make. It's a great cookbook.

5 out of 5 stars Maybe a little better than all that.......2004-01-02

I would have to agree with the previous reviewer that this cookbook tries almost too hard to fit too much in a small space, and that the photos are often useless, including a number of captionless shots of Food Network chefs cooking or chatting. These pictures look like something from a bank brochure, in my opinion.

But I also think that saying this is a "celebrity chef" cookbook is entirely wrong, and that the whole point of the book is to showcase tried-and-true favorite recipes of the NON-celebrity chefs behind the scenes, who make all the glossy TV shows possible. It isn't like Emeril and Sara are in the trenches preparing for today's episode, trying to decide if the cheesecake needs another half-cup of sugar. That's why they're not mentioned in this book, which is quite clearly titled.

As for the recipes, I kicked off my experimentation by making Mory's Honey Challah just tonight, and if I had a Top Five Pieces of Bread I've Ever Had In My Mouth list, this would have to be on it. Many more mouth-watering recipes to try.

One other note: I find that a good number of the recipes include sub-recipes that could easily be used with other dishes, such as a mahi (fish) tacos recipe that includes a sub-recipe for "escabeche," which is basically a spicy, chunky carrot/jalapeno relish, somewhat like the pickled "hot mix" you can buy at the store. It would go swimmingly with any mexican dish, or with any other spicy main course, like something cajun, or a big fat Chicago-style Italian beef sammich. The recipe for brisket (TEN HOURS in the oven! Woo!) includes a homemade BBQ sauce recipe. There are also "master recipes" in the back, for things like chicken stock and broth...elemental recipes that give the reader a broader knowledge to aid experimentation. They're also used in a number of the main recipes, of course.

Overall, a very fine cookbook with a very broad reach. Find the best price and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars These are Quality Recipes for Good Cooks.......2003-10-13

This `food network kitchens cookbook' is a type of celebrity chef cookbook, similar to those by Sara Moulton and Tyler Florence, which are by well known culinary personalities not associated with a particular restaurant or cuisine like Mario Batali (Italian) or Ming Tsai (Chinese). Books in this class are most useful to people who are already reasonably good cooks and use such books as a resource to broaden their range without having to buy a large number of cookbooks. The `celebrity chef' source for these books should be a reasonable assurance that the book's recipes will be well crafted. In satisfying this objective, this volume succeeds very well.
First, the book contains recipes from a wide range of cuisines with a totally predictable distribution. Out of the advertised 160 recipes, I count 19 Italian, 10 Mexican, 7 Japanese/Chinese, 6 Thai/Vietnamese, 5 French, 4 Greek/Mediterranean, 4 Southwestern/Tex-Mex, 4 Cajun/Creole, 3 Central European, and 2 South American. This count is based entirely on the country name in the title of the recipe or a distinctly Italian, French, Spanish, etc. name of dish or ingredient (Challah, for example is Yiddish and is counted as a central European dish). The potato, cheese, and egg breakfast dish may have a Spanish origin, but I didn't dig that deeply. You get the idea.
Second, the book contains sections on breakfast, sandwiches, breads, and desserts. One or more of these subjects are often missing from this type of book. Including them reinforces the value of the book as a source for entertaining and `having fun with food'.
Third, I find the recipes very sophisticated, worthy of something found in `Cooks Illustrated' or `Good Eats'. The recipe for foccacia, for example, is very careful to start with a sponge, which is allowed to bloom for 30 minutes. No short cuts here. Another example is in the biscuit recipe which adds butter in two different ways to enhance both flakiness and tenderness. I'm impressed. The score here isn't perfect. I detected a less than ideal recipe for Snickerdoodles cookies. None of this should be surprising. These recipes come from a demanding kitchen environment where they are prepared often, with some amount of experimentation and analysis to present them on Food Network shows.
Fourth, the discounted price is right. My giving four (4) stars is based on a price of 23 dollars or less. The list price of about 30 dollars is too much for 160 recipes.
Fifth, there are very few exotic ingredients required, in spite of the diversity of the sources. It does require lemon grass, but does not require Kafir lime leaves or Aleppo pepper. Similarly, there are few overly complicated recipes and several which are fairly simple. However, this is NOT a `fast and easy' book. I suspect that most novice cooks would find most of the recipes in this book somewhat involved. This is consistant with the fact that the authors did a good job of presenting interesting recipes which give professional quality results. All the dishes I prepared were very successful.
So why didn't I give this five (5) stars? The main reason is that the book tries to do more than it can possibly do well in 281 pages. It also does not do one thing which this `celebrity chef' class of book commonly does: give us a nice story or background to make each dish more interesting and make us want to read through the whole book. The book does not include an estimated preparation time make ahead tips. This is why I make the point of saying this book is best for a cook with experience. The misdirected effort is in the `essentials' chapter of 14 pages which gives a page or two on subjects which can each fill large books. A sentence referring the reader to books on technique by Jaques Pepin or James Peterson would have been much better. Also, of the advertised 300 photographs, only about half do justice to the food. Many are pictures of the food network staff at work. Many pictures of the food are too close or too far away. The photographs do not significantly enhance the value of the book. Some background stories however about Mario or Sara or Emril would have been great fun, especially if they connected the recipe to the show. If getting permission to include such material was too much to ask, then stories on how they worked up the recipes would have been neat. A missed opportunity, I think.

                5 out of 5 stars Great!.......2003-09-17

I have been researching akitas for over 2yrs prior to aquiring one. This book contains as much information as at least 3 of the other books recommended by searching this site. It is like 3 books in one. B.J. Andrews really knows her stuff and she makes you feel as if you're talking to a breeder as you read.

If you're thinking about getting an Akita as a pet and need to really learn about the dog-DON'T GET THIS BOOK !!Plenty of info about the origin of the dog,but I need to know if he's the right dog for me. I need more info on tmperment and specific health concerns. This book is mostly a general dog book with some Akita info-now I have to get another book !!!

3 out of 5 stars The World of the Akita.......2002-01-22

The original book written by Barbara Andrews is expensive in the hardcover edition. But, I am so thankful that I sacrificed and purchased it when I saw a copy in Petsmart. It has gone out of print, just when the Akita is hitting stride as a household pet that can be maintained by the average pet lover. Ms. Andrews put her heart and soul in the first book and it shows. The second book is not as far reaching in the kinds of information revealed in the original. I have had three Akitas and the original "The World of the Akita" has been the saving grace. I will probably always own an Akita, for as long as I can take care of a big pet. And, this book will be a cherished part of my library. I loaned it out once, never again! If you are an Akita owner or plan to be, I seriously suggest acquiring a copy of the original book. If you can't, get the new version, it's better than nothing.

4 out of 5 stars Good descriptions, questionable repairs.......2001-08-13

This book contains very good detailed descriptions of pieces, plus place and time of manufacture. It includes a number of small pieces, as well as the more common tansu.

Restoration of antiques is currently questioned, but methods shown here are not appropriate. Sanding, especially with a belt or other powered sander, destroys original hand-planed surfaces. Sandpaper also adds its own scratches to metal parts; steel wool is preferable for removing loose rust. The Heinekens' book "Tansu" describes a better metal coloring than spray paint. A few nicks and scratches are part of the piece's history, and small splits in the back do not affect its usefulness. Unlike the frame-and-panel European and American furniture, many tansu were not designed to accommodate effects of humidity changes on wood dimensions, and a repaired back panel will continue to move seasonally. When pulling nails, a piece of sheet metal under the wirecutters would prevent denting metal or wood parts. Since the Clarkes were in Japan, they could have bought much more appropriate tools than the ones shown, and some of the ones shown should never be used for this work. Japanese woodworking tools were just becoming available in the US in the early 1980s, but restorers should look for them now.

I learned a lot from this book about the types of Japanese furniture as well as fine details to help me evaluate pieces. This book is an excellent resource, particularly for the price! I plan on trying the directions for restoring a piece in the near future.

I learned a lot about Japanese furniture from this book - different styles, history and how to tell a quality piece. I am going to try to restore a small piece I have using the instructions in this book. For all of the expensive books available, I learned the most from this book!

3 out of 5 stars Some Very Nice Ideas.......2006-03-07

Contains some great ideas and super pictures of finished products, but gives much less information on how to construct the mid to large arbor projects that I was looking to do. It also is more of an intermediate to expert carpenter project book; I suspect most high intermediate and expert builders could easily take any of the ideas here and run with them. I, being somewhat of a novice carpenter, was looking for something a little more "by the numbers" for the arbors I would like to build. However, I am using the step by step trellis plans for one of the simpler trellises and it's very much "by the numbers".

                  3 out of 5 stars Tablesaw required.......2003-12-30

The projects in this book are well written with detailed instructions. The only caveat is that they all seem to require a table saw. The author assumes that you will make all the stock by cutting materials down to size on a table saw. It would have been more helpful if somewhere in the book he discussed alternative strategies for those without immediate access to a table saw. Or had a range of projects that did not all have exactly the same set of required tools.

Overall a good book, but check your tool list before buying.

5 out of 5 stars Great design and construction reference.......2003-11-09

Filled with photographs and very detailed guidance, "Trellises and Arbors" is an excellent book for both design ideas and actual production. This book has more design ideas than most similar books and even has a section on vertical gardening for those of us who like to actually use our trellises for various vines and flowering plants. The book is divided into four primary sections. The first one is a design guide with photographs of various arbors and trellises being used in different settings and for different purposes. Just realizing the possibilities from this section alone makes you want to go out and build one. The second section covers plants and gardening techniques for use with trellises - Virginia Creeper, various ivies, grapes, Wisteria, Passion Flower, Morning Glory, etc. The third section details the various tools, techniques, and materials for the actual construction of arbors and trellises. The fourth details the construction of specific trellises and arbors. Included with each project is a detailed list of the wood needed (quantity, thickness, length, width, and type) and even the number, type, and size of screws. Construction of your project is very detailed and each step is well illustrated so you can't go wrong. It even has lots of tips and tricks that you can use to make sure that the final result is very professional. "Trellises and Arbors" is by far one of the best books on the subject available today. More design ideas than most, illustrations and photographs to guide you every step of the way, comprehensive instructions make this a highly recommended read.

5 out of 5 stars A superbly presented and excellent reference.......2003-03-04

Compiled and presented by home-improvement and woodworking expert Bill Hylton, Trellises & Arbors: Landscape & Design Ideas, Plus Projects is a full-color, "user friendly", how-to guide to building trellises and arbors enhanced with illustrative diagrams and photographs on virtually every page. 4 out of 5 stars Great insight into Frederick Douglass' thought.......2005-09-23

This book was very insightful, and I felt that Williamson did a great job on drawing from a wide variety of sources to substantiate his core ideas. Contra past Douglass writers, he seeks to bring out the ideological, theological and practical tensions that Douglass lived with, rather than presenting Douglass' development as distinct stages of thought. He illustrates how Douglass' early faith in God and sense of moral agency transformed into a faith which urged him to action on his behalf and on the behalf of other enslaved people. Williamson especially focuses on the effects of Douglass' early life (born a slave, on the East Shore of Maryland, to particular owners who gave his particular opportunities, etc). He traces these early impressions on Douglass' identity through his life, demonstrating how other experiences colored and transformed his ideas and identity. The writing is a little weak, but it reads fairly well (I suspect it is a dissertation-turned-book).
