Book Description

For years Burke has harbored an outlaw's hard love for Wolfe, the beautiful, driven former sex-crimes prosecutor who was fired for refusing to "go along to get along." So when Wolfe is arrested for the attempted murder of John Anson Wychek, a vicious rapist she once prosecuted, Burke deals himself in. That means putting together a distrustful alliance between his underground "family of choice," Wolfe's private network, and a rogue NYPD detective who has his own stake in the outcome.

Burke knows that Wolfe’s alleged "victim," although convicted only once, is actually a serial rapist. The deeper he presses, the more gaping holes he finds in the prosecution’s case, but shadowy law enforcement agencies seem determined to protect Wychek at all costs, no matter who it sacrifices. Burke ups the ante by re-opening all the old "cold case” rape investigations, calls in a lot of markers from both sides of the law, and finally shows all the players why "down here" is no place for tourists.

Bone-crushing impact, set in a milieu that clogs your lungs and stings your eyes, Down Here is the penetrating and remarkable new thriller from the master of American noir.

For many years, Burke has carried a torch for Wolfe, the beautiful, driven former sex crimes prosecutor who was fired for refusing to "go along to get along." They share a marrow-deep hatred of predators but walk different sides of the street when it comes to justice. So when Burke hears that Wolfe has been arrested for attempted murder, he knows something is double-wrong—and deals himself in.

Putting together a distrustful alliance between his "family of choice," Wolfe's outlaw network, and an informant inside the police department, Burke starts with the alleged victim, a brutal serial rapist Wolfe had personally prosecuted. He's back on the street because his conviction was reversed, and any of his long list of victims has plenty of motive to kill him. The deeper Burke gets into the investigation, the more holes he finds in the case against Wolfe. Yet the DA's office continues to press forward, and Burke has to find out what their game is. No stranger to devil's bargains, Burke reopens the rape investigations—his way—and discovers an artist whose violent work in progress is a whole city's nightmare.

5 out of 5 stars Everything Burke is..........2007-03-21

Great. Just love the entire series. The staccato writing style just works for me. Would love to see this on film, just can't imagine who would be Burke.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2006-11-06

Some years ago, I read "Flood" and "Strega" and enjoyed them. As a casual fan of Mr. Vachss, I enjoyed the quick pace and grit of "Down Here," though I wished he'd developed the two female characters - Laura and Wolfe - more. There were the makings of a really interesting anti-love triangle here. Instead, "Down Here" is essentially an investigation/mystery story, enjoyable if a bit forgettable. I won't rush out for another dose right away, but Vachss is still one of the writers I know will entertain without demanding too much from me.

5 out of 5 stars Vachss at his best - if you know the backstories.......2006-08-17

Andrew Vachss's character Burke lives in a gritty underworld most of us will never encounter outside the pages of a book. A fact for which we can pretty much all be grateful. DOWN HERE brings that world into our living rooms and rubs our faces in it, if only for about 300 pages, which is long enough.

Burke's unrequited love for the beautiful crime fighter Wolfe is what brings him and his family of choice back together, working to figure out who framed Wolfe for murder, and why. Wolfe has been arrested for murdering John Anson Wychek, a rapist she put away, who is now back on the streets due to some technicality.

While the plot will satisfy all but the most demanding of puzzle seekers, it is Vachss's characters who bring Burke's world to life. Long-time readers will recognize Burke's family: Max the Silent, the Prof, Pepper, Mole, and Michelle. Pansy has been replaced (sort of) by Bruiser, although there will truly never be another dog like Pansy.

I would not recommend starting to read Andrew Vachss with DOWN HERE; there are earlier books in the series which would be less convoluted. Reading DOWN HERE can be an exercise in reading between the lines because the back stories of the characters are important but not always well-explicated. There is almost a shorthand used by Vachss which, if a reader isn't familiar with the language, makes for some difficult connections. However, if this isn't the first Vachss for you, you won't be disappointed. DOWN HERE is Vachss at his best, working the language to death and wowing the reader while he does it.

5 out of 5 stars Mesmerizing!.......2005-12-26

Mesmerizing!

Down Here is just another example of Andrew Vachss' fascinating novels. The stories are truly mesmerizing and hold one's interest from the beginning to end. The action is fast paced with no holds barred. The characters are intriguing and often lovable. Other characters are those you love to hate. I would recommend buying the hard cover versions of his books as they are real keepers!

4 out of 5 stars Best Burke in a while.......2005-07-28

I've been a big fan of Vachss since Flood, but, while his already strong writing has steadily improved to where I find anything he writes a compelling read, many of the plots of the last few Burke novels have not been particularly compelling or memorable. Only Child would be the most recent example.

Down Here, on the other hand, has everything you'd want in a topnotch Burke novel. It's a detailed interweaving of plots and counterplots, with the gripping, airtight prose of a master of the genre. Throw in Burke's wry observations of human nature and perfect blend of cynicism and compassion and you've got one of Vacchs' best.

Book Description

MOVE OVER, PAUL BUNYAN--MAKE WAY FOR MAD AMOS MALONE!

Strange things lurk up in the mountains and out in the plains and deserts of the West, but few are as unique as the giant mountain man named Amos Malone, the man some call Mad Amos, though not to his face. But when the world gets weird, there's no one who's better to have on your side...
Is a renegade dragon harassing the men laying the rails of the great railroad? Are headless Indian spirits driving you from your land? Is that volcano threatening to destroy your settlement? Then Mad Amos is the man for you.
Plus, two new, never-before-published stories in the Mad Amos canon:
NEITHER A BORROWER BE: When a horse thief sets his sights on stealing Amos' faithful mount Worthless, he gets more than he expects...for Worthless isn't exactly an ordinary horse...
THE PURL OF THE PACIFIC: Mad Amos takes to the high seas on a whale of an adventure and thwarts a vengeful South Pacific island shaman at his own game...
Ten delightful stories of dragons, jackalopes, snake-oil salesmen, iron horses, and, of course, the incomparable Mad Amos Malone from the incredible imagination of world-class storyteller and bestselling author Alan Dean Foster!

5 out of 5 stars The best book I ever stole..........2001-11-19

Well, the ONLY book I ever stole actually. As an extra on the a TV set that was supposed to be a Sci Fi convention I slipped this book into my backpack on camera to be funny... Amos ended up coming home with me. I loved reading this book. It's a collection of short stories revolving around Amos Mallone, whom some call mad. (He's not really mad. He just knows a lot that normal people don't, he seems, to them, to be so.) Amos is a Mountain Man in the days when such men were growing rare. Amos' ability to handle the other worldly problems with style and know-how over brute force and hocus-pocus makes this a great book for people who play the RPG "Deadlands". (The first story/chapter where Amos takes care of a problem much like "Portrait of a Hero" in "Once upon a Time : A Treasury of Modern Fairy Tales" is a good example of Amos' way of thinking and sets the tone for the rest of the book nicely.)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT FUN!.......1999-10-28

This is a terrific read - funny, action-packed, and a stretch for the imagination! My 80+ year old dad (avid Louis L'Amour fan) loved it! I'm a long-time science fiction fan and I loved it too. Mad Amos is addictive - he reminds me of Lazarus Long in some ways.

3 out of 5 stars Not too mad enough about Mad Amos to matter..........1999-03-06

The stories, though cute, could have had a bit more humor. I thought they had a sort of dull sheen to the characters, more fuzzy in concept than what would really satisfy the reader. The Dean should take a lesson from A.C. Doyle on how he described the private dick, Sherlock Holmes. Amos should be given a more sharply delineated character, especialy in a short story omnibus like this one. I thought F.P. Wilson's short stories had more versatility (The Barrens and Others) than Dean; and Joe Lansdale's tales can kick Dean's characters and humor flat in a New York second.

5 out of 5 stars A literate's cross between Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill.......1998-07-26

Move over, Paul Bunyan and Pecos Bill. Run away, all you thieves and demons. Mad Amos Malone's in town and he's not only tough, he's smart! The thinking man's hero, riding a cross-breed unicorn, will amuse and delight anyone with an imagination and a sense of humor. Mr. Foster is a great story-teller and an absolute craftsman of the English language. His ability to paint pictures with words, combined with a tongue-in-cheek view of the past and the present make this group of short stories a potential classic.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and entertaining blend of western and fantasy.......1998-07-11

Is a dragon robbing your stagecoaches? Are headless Indian ghosts driving you from your land? Is an evil spirit keeping you from some prime hunting ground? Then Amos Malone is the man for you. With his 50 caliber Sharps and his faithful horse, Worthless, he's there to confront any supernatural powers that stop the expantion of the Wild West. Even if you don't like westerns, this is still a well written (and funny) short story collection that most people will enjoy.

          Book Description

Macabre and fascinating, Ghosts Among Us offers true-life, haunting accounts of eerie visitations and paranormal experiences along with artistically shot black-and-white photographs of haunted sites. The personal, firsthand reports and chilling, full-length stories are bolstered by sidebars of actual accounts of "Ghosts in the News." Each chapter explores mysterious events-events that the reader will find hard to pass off as mere coincidence. In her quest to uncover explanations for each incident, Leslie Rule extensively researched library archives and interviewed credible witnesses, historians, renowned psychics, and parapsychologists. Throughout Ghosts Among Us, Rule's findings are mesmerizing. She writes about being raised in a haunted house. "To top that," Rule explains, "[my mother] introduced me to a serial killer when I was fourteen." The reader is invited to skip ahead to learn about that chilling episode . . . but the pages prior to that offer their own gripping, spell-binding encounters.

1 out of 5 stars Good book to read.......2007-04-18

I borrow this book from my younger brother tonight and read it in one setting. It is interesting reading and there are some really neat pictures in it. This the first of any ghost story type books that I have read and maybe I will read some more. Though I have never been a ghost story book reader, I do believe that ghost or spirits are all around us. And if you talk to them and truly listen with an open mind, you can hear them talking back to you!

          1 out of 5 stars Incredibly goofy.......2006-08-22

I bought this book for research for a novel, and am not overly impressed with it. She seems to believe just about everything she is handed, with a lot of "imagine if...!" type of space wasting speculation, not terribly interesting. Additionally, the writing reflects this breathless viewpoint and is over the top with a lot of exclamation points. She could have used an editor to tone down much of this bad writing, which only detracts from an already weak starting point. Some of the stories were interesting but much of what is in here takes rather a stretch to believe a supernatural influence, and ultimately I didn't find it terribly convincing.

5 out of 5 stars Shiver Up My Spine.......2006-06-28

Ms. Rule does it again. She clearly has found her calling.

          5 out of 5 stars Tops!.......2006-06-16

Leslie Rule has a way with a spooky tale. She probably comes by this naturally since her mother is Ann Rule, the best true crime writer in the field.

I could not put this book down!

2 out of 5 stars waste of money!.......2006-05-06

the book is boring the stories short and not interesting. the book is more a travel book than a ghost book!

              Book Description

Classical elegance. Loose-fitting comfort. Versatility. Functional design. These are just some of the reasons why traditional Japanese clothes have captured the imagination of modern fashion designers and stylish dressers around the world.

Making Japanese clothes is surprisingly simple. Patterns consist of virtually all straight lines, and the non-body-conforming shapes require no darts, buttonholes, or zippers.

Here, in this creative sourcebook, is all the information you need to sew authentic Japanese clothes or to design your own Japan-inspired fashions:

o Step-by-step instructions for making 14 select traditional garments, from the luxurious wedding rove and the classic kimono to the informal hanten jacket and practical field pants
o Detailed patterns that can be adjusted to fit any size
o An introduction to the basic building blocks-sleeve shapes, collars, hems, linings, and padding-so creative sewers can design their own fashions
o Over 40 sketches with many more suggestions for modern variations on the classic garments
o A choice of authentic Japanese techniques or simplified methods that achieve the same look
o How to use any width fabric, whether narrow Japanese fabric or standard Western widths
o Sources of Japanese fabric and sewing accessories
              o Care and storage guidelines
o Fabric suggestions, ideas for creative wear, historical information, and much more!

4 out of 5 stars hard to find information in a usable format.......2007-09-27

The author clearly is a scholar and brings his special knowledge to this interesting and rare book. I especially liked the illustrations that drew on ukiyo e woodblock traditions. I passed it on to a friend who has the skills to utilize the information.

              5 out of 5 stars Very helpful!.......2007-08-07

I bought this book, as well as "The Book of Kimono," to learn about kimonos and how to make one for a Halloween costume. He gives you all the information you need to make one and it's accessories, but there is a lot of measuring, as well as cutting and sewing. Since following his book would take a lot of time, I plan on using the information to modify a commercial pattern (Simplicity pattern 5839) to make it more authentic. For example, embroidering a "family crest" on the back as a good luck symbol. (Mine will be an origami crane since I folded a thousand of them as a wedding gift once.) I will also be following his instructions for the obi and how to tie it since the pattern's isn't quite authentic enough. Overall, I learned a lot and am very pleased with the book.

              5 out of 5 stars A very useful book!.......2007-05-26

I read other's comments about this book,I suppose mine will perhaps make someone else buy it,and maybe be annoyed with me if they wish they paid attention to the "nay" reveiws...
No, the book has no patterns.
You have to pay attention to the fact that fabric comes in standard widths. The diagrams, are exactly all that a person needs....it so simple, really. This book shows you approximate yardage lengths, and where to fold those lengths, and what straight lines go where in making a robe, trousers, whatever.
I found it a great book, when I looked at the diagrams, it was a bit like the most basic geometry, made even easier by the "Ah-haas,that the diagrams seemed to do for me.
If I were an instructor in fiber arts and wearable artmaking, I would strongly recommend this book to any student who wanted the most basic and straightforeward information in simple garment construction.

4 out of 5 stars Don't let the cover fool you!.......2007-05-13

Yeah, the cover is funky, and there are a few "huh?" photos in the middle, but this really is a serious book about making kimono. As mentioned by someone else, there is almost no direct information about wearing a kimono in this book, just making them. The only direct wearing information you get is how to tie a helper chord to pull the sleeves back when you are working, how to tuck the kimono hem up when you are traveling or working, and how to tie the men's basic obi.

An average or beginning sewer is going to be intimidated and overwhelmed by the detail of information in the book. As already mentioned, there are no patterns in the book per se, but that's because the Japanese have a set pattern that they work with. The book describes the pattern and has drawings to help you mark out your own. It talks about how to cut cloth from the traditional Japanese bolt, or how to work with the bolts of cloth that you might find in Europe or America which are a different width. If you are actually making a kimono, I suggest you read through the entire instructions, mark the parts you need, and before you so much as touch a needle and thread or scissors, read those parts *again* to make sure you have all the information in mind. It's easy to accidentally miss some rather important bit of information.

This book has information on making all of the parts of the kimono (though, I agree with a previous reviewer that some of the organization is ... interesting), including how to make obi and tabi (the socks). It does not show how to make hakama *HOWEVER* it does show how to make mompe - which are very similar to hakama, just shorter and gathered at knees or ankles instead of full length and full cuff.

There are several suggestions tucked in random locations about how to make more modern versions - how to add pockets to the mompe for instance - but you do sort of have to hunt for them and all of them are for making a new outfit, not updating an older one.

I mostly used this book for information on how to *repair* my kimono, and this book had all the information I needed. It showed me how to do the hand sewing (in an easier way than *I* was trying to do it), and how to do the special knots and double-backs needed for the kimono to lay properly and stay in place. The book made it so clear for me that once I matched up the styles in the book with my kimono, I redid all of the stitching on my kimono in less time than I had expected just the sectional repairs to take.

3 out of 5 stars Making Japanese Clothes........2007-03-08

The book is well written and very complete in the detailing of Japanese clothes. The title is a bit misleading though. It implies that there are patterns in the book although this is not the case. There are instructions on how to create your own patterns. While this may not be too difficult for an experienced seamstress it may be a bit disconcerting for a beginner.

There are some old tricks in here, but unlike dogs -old humans and young too- can be taught new tricks. I like reading books about things I can do for other people....my 3 dogs can't read so someone had to read self-helps for them right? HAHA...This book will show you creative new ways to reward your dogs, and remind you of some of the ways we need to care for our pets that don't occur to us every day. My beagles sure do love the massages!!!

Rocky (my pet maltese) and I enjoyed this book. There are many great ideas and thoughts for caring for your dog. I did have one concern about giving your dog a pill in a grape. My vet says grapes are not good for dogs. Other then that, the book had wonderful insights and fun ideas.

5 out of 5 stars Not necessarily for the froo-froo pet!.......2003-03-02

Moore offers pampering methods that your dog will actually acknowledge, enjoy and benefit from. The suggestions have the dog's health in mind and even offer solutions for common problems (like keeping your dog still during grooming,etc.). It's more of a "how to care for your dog better" book and covers all sorts of situations like travel and healthy dog recipes. The short sections and cute drawings make this a pleasure for any dog guardian to read, regardless of breed,

This book was a lot like "Fake, Fraud or Genuine" in terms of identification content. I was hoping for a book that would help me find out where some of the odd old things I have came from.

This book tells the reader how to recognize pieces that are truly old, and explains the differences between truly old furniture, new furniture made from pieces of old furniture, reproductions, and other categories of collectible pieces.

It also has vast sections on cataloging and documenting for insurance and other valuation purposes, and working with appraisers.

This book does just what the title says. An excellent reference book for just about everything a person might come across in garage sales, collectible stores, auctions, and attics. Fun to read and indexed very well. Learned a great deal from it.

Emyl Jenkins "Appraisal Book" is written for any level of antiques collector. She defines what antiques are, categorizes many periods, styles and different types of antiques, as well as collectibles, and helps the reader understand how to begin the process of valuing an antique. She uses humor and a down-to-earth approach to make her points, and makes the entire process of "antiquing" approachable even to a novice collector.

5 out of 5 stars Read the book and learn.......2004-06-28

I disagree with the disparaging reviews. I felt like it was very practical and really gave important information for growing in a small area (4x4 ft- hence "closet cultivator").

5 out of 5 stars Debugging the lies.......2002-02-03

I've read this book several times and found it very useful. Though decievingly complicated, a little extra attention can help you make a cheap and effective system. The top three reviewers are obiously all the same person(they have similar comments and come from the same place; no coincidence). The reviewer didnt even read the book, saying that there is no information on making system. There is plenty of info on making cheap to expensive systems, organic or hydroponic. He then pats himself on the back to sell his own book, whos title i was too disgusted to read. Ignore the above three commments and buy this book, it will change your life.

1 out of 5 stars Totally Misleading Title.......2001-12-07

When I bought this book I thought it looked great and would give me the information needed to set up a small grow system. But, there was absolutely no information about setting up systems of any kind, instead it was all basic info, like plants need water to survive! I just wish that there was an option for negative stars. I would recommend Sea of Green by Hans, Marijuana Grower's Guide by Mel Frank, or Indoor Marijuana Horticulture each of these books, in contrast to this one, give clear and relevant information thatwould help anyone set up a basic grow system.

1 out of 5 stars Very little practical information........2001-11-20

I agree with the other reviewers that this is a very basic book. It really seems to just cover the basic theory of marijuana and cultivation without ever getting into the specifics. There was absolutely no guidance on how to set up a closet system, why you should, what the benefits or problems would be. The illustrations were all of large scale gardens and didn't explain how to set the room up. The color pictures were ok but not anything I haven't seen before.

1 out of 5 stars Just the Basics.......2001-10-23

This book is poorly written, full of outdated information, and is not for serious growers. Might be interesting for a teenager who is considering growing, but lacks the information needed to be successful. I've read a lot of grow books, and this is one of the worst I've seen. In fact, I've thrown it in the recycling bin.

                    Book Description

A study tracing the relationships between missionaries and African Church workers in Kenya in the years 1850-1900, as missionaries increasingly adopted imperial assumptions of Western superiority. It tells the story of the first Anglican clergy in Kenya, their wives and colleagues; their rescue from slavery, their education in India and their subsequent work in East Africa. It demonstrates their contribution to the rapid growth of the Church and of indigenous Christian communities. Yet later missionaries were not willing to accord to the Africans the position they had a right to expect. The book recounts their protest and the development of a Church order. Similar events in West Africa have been documented, but this is the first time such a pattern in East Africa has been outlined.

                      Book Description

This book has a dual purpose. The first is to present a biography of Yamato Ichihashi, a Stanford University professor who was one of the first academics of Asian ancestry in the United States. The second purpose is to present, through Ichihashi’s wartime writings, the only comprehensive first-person account of internment life by one of the 120,000 persons of Japanese ancestry who, in 1942, were sent by the U.S. government to “relocation centers,” the euphemism for prison camps.

Arriving in the United States from Japan in 1894, when he was sixteen, Ichihashi attended public school in San Francisco, graduated from Stanford University, and received a doctorate from Harvard University. He began teaching at Stanford in 1913, specializing in Japanese history and government, international relations, and the Japanese American experience. He remained at Stanford until he and his wife, Kei, were forced to leave their campus home for a series of internment camps, where they remained until the closing days of the war.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars "ELITE" STANFORD PROFESSOR INTERNED WITH THE REST.......1999-06-25

Detailed and exhaustive book by/about Ichihashi who came to the US from Japan in 1984 at the age of 16 to study. He graduated from Stanford, got a Ph.D. from Harvard, became a professor at Stanford. He and his wife and son "relocated" to Santa Anita and then Tule Lake and then Granada (Amache) during WWII. He became embittered and an elitist during the war years, which is told in a very dramatic albiet exhaustive fashion in the book via his letters. Following relocation he and his wife returned to a very different Stanford University and environs, which he found very difficult to cope with. Very enjoyable book, personal as well as historical.

5 out of 5 stars Vital contribution to Asian American and internment history.......1999-05-21

Though long and at times cumbersome to read, this is a valuable addition to the literature in Asian American and World War II internment history. Yamato Ichihashi is an all but forgotten figure who has left a written record of his internment experience as he lived it, making this book a rare and important piece that all students of the internment should read. At the same time, this book belongs to the body of literature in Asian American social history. Who knew that in the early 1900s, Stanford University had a Japanese American professor among its faculty? What kind of life did he lead considering his anomalous position as an academic compared to other Japanese in America and the intense anti-Asian atmosphere of those times in the West? How does knowledge of this man's life enrich our understanding of Asian American history and American history at large? All of those questions are satisfyingly answered. Ichihashi's writings take center stage in the book, but Chang provides lucidly written annotations and a bibliographic essay that make the volume quite readable and enjoyable. Chang allows Ichihashi's words to speak for themselves which allows the reader to get a very vivid picture of life in the internment camps. In addition, reading his thoughts about his circumstances as an academic, a professor at Stanford, and an internee offer rare and revealing insights.
