What could be more conducive to a memorial holiday than snow and an ancient country house with eight indoor servants? Murder perhaps? Each guest is anxious to spend time alone with their host, but Nathanial Herriard quarrels with each one. When he is found stabbed in the back, in his own locked bedroom, the carefully planned party takes on a sinister aspect as each character realizes there is a killer in their presence.
Each member of the party has something to hide and something to gain by the old man's death, yet Inspector Hemingway is stymied as to how the murder was committed.
An excellent "whodunit" for all Heyer fans with very clever staging.

Great mystery and funny characters.......2005-12-18
This was a really good book. The mystery had me stumped for a long time, but made perfect sense at the end. I hate it when the secret killer's movements and motive are just tacked on at the end as a twist. The characters were funny and Detective Hemingway was in his prime. Also, I read the book at Christmas and it takes place at a Christmas party gone bad, which made my own family problems seem much funnier.

To my way of thinking this is Georgette Heyers best mystery. I am not usually a mystery reader but I like her gothic romances and I thought I would try this one. She has such a good sense of humor and this book did not disappoint me. I have since read all of her mysterys that I could find. In this one Heyer takes one crabby bachelor uncle, one sweetness and light uncle, an actress niece and her long-haired playwrite, a sarcastic nephew and his blond bimbo fiance, one friend of the family, one business partner, and mixes them with a Christmas party. Out comes an impossible murder. I never figured out "who done it" until the very end. Heyers Inspector Hemingway is a great character and I would know him in a minute if I met him. Georgette Heyer at her best, it's well worth the reading if you can find it.

Unlike many other 'parenting books' (full of psychological recipies which make you feel bad if you don't follow their particular recommendations, each one of course holding the absolute and only truth), this one is simply wonderful, refreshing, full of practical tips and freely inspiring. I was a bit skeptical when I read in a previous review that it could also be a spiritual book even without being a parent, but yes, it is definitely full of ideas to develop spirituality into one's life, being or not a parent. I'm sixth month pregnant, finishing the book, and now I feel completely reassured about the parenting adventure which awaits me. Thank you!

I bought this book to get some ideas when my brain is foggy from being hypothyroidal. But then a friend borrowed it so she could prepare some meals for HER friend who had to undergo renewed tests. That friend is not a cook, and there lies the value of this book.
Anyone who uses prefab foods and has no idea how to prepare meals from scratch will be in trouble when suddenly faced with a low iodine diet. This book helps to get some bearings and eat nutritious and mostly very tasty meals that even a spouse who is not a kitchen genie can prepare fairly easily.
Pricey, as are all specialty books that don't go into mass printing, but definitely worth the money for anyone who needs the help. Think what you last spent at MacDonald's...

This book was a lifesaver when it came to the LID. It's easy to use, the recipes are simple and taste great, and it takes all the guesswork out of a difficult diet. I am grateful to have had it, and I recommend it to anyone having to go through the tough process of the LID.
Low Iodine Recipes.......2007-01-04
This book was extremely helpful while my son was on a low iodine diet for 3 weeks. He was diagnosed with thyroid cancer and has to have an iodine scan each year as part of his follow-up. The first year he lost over 20 pounds while on the diet, but this year was much better since we had the book to help us figure out approriate meals. The whole family ate the prepared meals most of the time and enjoyed every recipe we tried. The book also had some helpful information about thyroid cancer and the dietary restrictions when preparing for a scan. I discussed this book with several people at MD Anderson and recommended that they pass on the information to other patients that have to go on this diet yearly. We marked our favorite recipes to use again next year, so now at least the cooking won't be as stressful in the future.

I purchased this cookbook to complete a LID after two surgeries and before RAI for Follicular thyroid cancer. It has great ideas but, my Dr.'s instructions were much stricter and contrary to the author's claims, not antiquated or wrong. My Cancer clinic is in the top 5 in the nation continually and they still follow the more rigid LID (i.e. no egg whites, no granulated sugar, etc.). My Dr. didn't appreciate the book as it touted a "specialist" telling the reader that the cookbook is the real authority, the most up to date, not your personal physician. I took some helpful tips from this book but was limited as most of her "solutions" involve foods I was not permitted to have. Toward the end of the diet I saw my hospital's dietician, that was the most helpful thing I did!

I'm so glad that I stumbled upon this book. It's a great source of recipe ideas. With this and the low-iodine cookbook on the Thyca website, I have been eating pretty well. The noodle bake and the cabbage rolls are excellent.

I really love this book. I got it to give my Malamute something to do. The author covers weightpulling, skijoring, and backpacking. She also covers sports like agility and Rally-O. There's so many options here that you're sure to find something to do with your dog whether it's frisbee, tracking, or earthdog. You must get this book!

As any Brothers Hildebrandt fan knows, Greg and Tim's first Tolkein calender went on to become a worldwide bestseller. Some of the art,such as Unexpected Party or Gandalf with the Balrog was simply brilliant. Some of it looks dated today such as the hideous 1976 granny dress that Galadriel wears or the Sgt. Pepper mustache on Aragorn and the silly looking Fell beasts ridden by Nazgul who look like they're about to fall off at any minute. Oh well. Nobody got out of the 70s without some style howlers. Laugh at the funny stuff and be awed by the great.
One of the strongest and most charming elements of the book is the descriptions from Greg Hildebrant's son who was five when the brothers began working on the calenders. Young Greg's memories are full of wonder that's in keeper with what his uncle and father were working on. It's not all sweetness and light however, young Greg remembers that toward the middle of the project things got increasingly difficult in the studio. The pressures of the deadline, creative disagreements and artistic disappointments (Among other things the brothers didn't have time to do a huge battle scene that they'd planned) and the need to do separate projects are all mentioned.
Besides all three Hildebrandt calenders, the book has pictures of privately commissioned works (some of which are better than the orginal paintings), prelim sketches, and photos of the models. If you loved the work of the brothers or have just discovered it this will be a highly entertaining treat for you.
Some great art, some not so great.......2003-12-31
I loved the Hildebrandts' art as a kid, and I appreciate being able to revisit it in this handsome volume. Engaging scenes, fabulous detail, vivid colors, and some of the best Tolkien paintings ever (the Ring of Galadriel, Old Man Willow, the Pillars of the Kings, Saruman and the Palantir). Their influence can be seen in many subsequent interpretations of Tolkien (compare the Hildebrandts' "Eowyn and the [left-handed] Nazgul" with the same scene in the 2004 Ted Nasmith calendar) and in much "generic" fantasy art.
But... Some of the earlier works have odd perspective (check out the chimney in "Gandalf visits Bilbo"). The hobbits look like children (the 5-year-old Greg Hildebrandt Jr. was the model). Shadowfax just fell off the carousel. Treebeard is a cartoon. Rivendell looks like a gingerbread house. Smaug appears to be made of plastic. The Nazgul fly around on rubber chickens (really, that's what they used as the model). And Aragorn's mustache! Perhaps it looked majestic in the 70s, but now it's just laughable.
It is interesting to see the sketches (some of which are superior to the final painting) and reference photos. The text is annoyingly told from the author's perspective as a 5-year-old model, but contains some amusing nuggets like the rubber chicken fell beast. I didn't think much of the pullout poster -- it's certainly not their best work. Still, on balance I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Tolkien (unless you already have the calendars).
Journey through middle earth like you've never done before!.......2003-02-06
I hadn't actually heard of the Hildebrandt brothers,but got this book for the simple fact that it bore the name of Tolkien.I opened it up and there it was,scenes I pictured in my head were now right in front of me,in richly painted acrylic colors,with moods of sadness,fear,peace,and courage.I recommend this book and give it five stars!Get it come on you know you want to....

The Bros. Hildebrandt were *the* Tolkien artists of my youth, and even today, when I find my own artistic interpretion of the scenes varies so much from theirs, I still deeply appreciate what they did, and am thrilled to see their calendar work -- with the associated sketches and model photos -- reproduced here.
The childhood anecdotes by the author -- son of one of the Brothers -- are occasionally interesting, more often annoying. But the art itself remains glorious.

Racism + Capitalism = Public Housing in Chicago.......2002-12-29
Excellent review of how the Chicago Housing Authority, despite good intentions, ended up not only itself segregated, but reinforced existing housing segregation in the private market.
Hirsch actually takes a much broader view of his subject than public housing. Rather, he exp;ores the various ways public policy was manipulated (generally by commercial interests) to serve their own ends, and how those profit driven manipulations resulted in Chicago being one of America's most segregated cities. Ironically, the dramatic expansion of the Black Ghetto chronicalled by Hirsch occurred at the same time that the country was under seige by the forces of McCarthism...yet in Chicago, the commercial interests (lead by Marshall Field) had no compunction about seizing private property to serve their own ends.
Anyone who believes that neighborhoods are segregated because of private choices must read this book and learn the truth.
the deception of public housing.......2000-09-28
After reading The Hidden War,(which made extensive reference to Hirsch's book)I wanted a more detailed history about the creation of public housing as we know it to be in Chicago. This book gives detail of how the political,educational, civic organizations wanted to contain the burgeoning African American community which was growing during post world war II and the great migration years. The powerful in Chicago used government policies to maintain housing segregation...the powerless resorted to violence to keep African Americans out of neighborhoods...the results were the massive and bleak housing structures which are called public housing. This book not only talks about the historical wheelings and dealings of the white power structure, but it also gives insight into how the same tactics are being used today, to maintain certain class and racial segregation. This is a good companion must read along with The Hidden WARS.

I had to read this book for a college history class I took 2 years ago and I felt that it was extremely detailed and informative. I was quite surprised by my reaction because I felt it was a great read whether or not you enjoy historical books.

Hundreds of ghettos were created throughout eastern Europe by the Germans and their allies during the Second World War. There have been some studies of the largest ghettos - Warsaw and L0dz - and a few accounts of some of the smaller ones; but very little examination of the ghettos a a whole. This pioneering new history draws heavily on the testimonies of those who suffered in them, making use of a wide range of diaries and memoirs (and exploring the problems inherent in such sources). Other documentary sources - particularly German - are also used, but the intention is to look at the ghettos "from below," focusing on behavior, values, and suffering, as well as on the heroism and the passiveness of the Jewish communities. Never before has personal testimony been so extensively used and systematically evaluated to write a history of the East European ghettos.

This book is short but gives good insight to the horror that the Jews of Warsaw suffered in the years of Nazi occupation. First hand reports from diaries and interviews make this a good selection.

Appaling....It is disgusting that someone would even think about taking away the heritage of the Greek and Egyptian peoples. It is obvious and scientifically proven that the Egyptians weren't ethnic Africans. They were Mediterranean, and in today's world would be considered Caucasians. Moreover, Ancient art and descriptions show the ancient Egyptian looking like the ARabs of the Gulf, the Hebrews of Canaan or the Berbers of the Maghreb, none of whom can be considered black. Although Egypt influenced Greece, Greece flourished independently. The plague of AFrocentrism must be stopped. It is merely a series of myths made to boost the self-esteem of impoverished African-American youth.
