"Murder, suicide, horoscopes, and extortion" in Elizabethan England.......2007-05-31
"Face Down Below the Banqueting House" is the eighth mystery in the Lady Appleton Mystery series. Lady Susanna Appleton is a widowed (but still quite young) gentlewoman who dabbles in herbalism and sleuthing. This story is set in the summer of 1573. Lady Appleton's household, Leigh Abbey, is in a state of excitement at the possibility of being visited as part of the Queen's Progress, a tour of the kingdom made by Queen Elizabeth. But when the Queen's man Brian Tymberley comes to Lady Appleton's estate to inspect the premises in advance of the Queen's visit, two men die in the same day in suspicious-looking falls. Lady Appleton and her lover Nick Baldwin, the local sheriff, investigae the deaths to determine if they are accidents or murders.
In addition to the well-told mystery story, author Emerson skilfully weaves in lots of facts about everyday life in Elizabeth England. She thoughtfully includes a glossary at the front to explain some terms used in the book. By the way, a "banqueting house" is a special house used
for enjoying dessert after the meal!
I thoroughly enjoyed the mystery and the Elizabethan atmosphere of this book. I'm definitely going back to read the previous entries in this series.
This author knows her stuff!.......2007-03-20
This author knows her stuff. This is a historical mystery set in England in 1573, during the reign of Elizabeth I, and the reader is utterly transported to that time period. Emerson makes it easy on the reader by putting in a glossary of essential terms and a cast of characters, in which she notes who the real-life people were.
Lady Appleton is the heroine of this series, and Emerson manages to put her in some tricky situations. First, the Queen is coming to visit. And while you might think this is a cause for celebration, for Lady Appleton it could spell disaster. A visit by the queen is a costly, the preparations are time-consuming, and it draws unwanted attention from an almost all-powerful monarch who can change, or even end, your life on a whim. And when a suspicious death occurs shortly before the queen is due to arrive, the pressure is on Lady Appleton to figure out exactly what happened. And quickly.
I loved the huge amount of detail Emerson puts in this book about life in the Elizabethan era. It is absolutely fantastic. While she omits some of the unpleasantness of everyday life, she doesn't glamorize and make it unrealistic. The characters are affected by death, disease, and separation from loved ones. Their actions are dictated by their stations in life in this class-based society, and have to deal with all the prejudices thereof.
The other think I liked a lot was, for lack of a better expression, as sense of impending doom. In this society, there was always someone else who had power of you and your actions. Lady Appleton is the widowed lady of the manor and has the power over her servants. But she has to worry about the Queen and her minions who might report back any grievance to her, the other local gentry, and the religious officials who have the ability to slander her name, defame her character, and demand punishment. Careful strategy, strong allies, and well-placed bribes are the key to a happy life in this book.
Did I solve it? No, I was enjoying the mood too much to really suss it out. Will I read more? Definitely.
Another superb mystery from Kathy Emerson.......2005-06-03
This novel continues the author's earlier works and is similar in style and content. There are two reasons for her novels, the first being to write excellent mysteries and the second to inform the reader of life in the Elizabethan age. This novel keeps the reader guessing until the end without any last-minute revelations that let the reader down. It shows how Lady Appleton uses her intuition and the accumulated facts to figure out the crime and perpetrator. It also places the reader in this earlier time and in a thoroughly entertaining way lets the reader learn of daily life then. I found every page of this novel to be worth reading; it's writing at its best.
Good Queen Bess up a tree?.......2005-03-27
...not with Lady Susanna on the case. Kathy Lynn Emerson is one of the few true masters of the "history mystery." I flew through this book, and lost three pounds. That's because I skipped lunch AND dinner. NYT bestseller Tess Gerritsen says "Lady Appleton is irresistible." Edgar nominee Julia Spencer-Fleming calls it "a honeyed comfit of murder, malice and manor houses. A must-read." This is a book that lives up to the advance billing, folks. Now, if she would spend but a bit more time with Sir Francis Drake and the sea dogs....

I Thoroughly enjoyed this book!.......2002-07-24
I very much enjoyed this book. I found the premise to be very original and unique. I found myself transported to another place and time, to a land with a history and a story all of its own- a story which very much could have been a part of our own global history, were we somehow able to peel back the miles of ice and snow and gain an intimate peek at what truly lies hidden on the last great unexplored land in the world- Antarctica. Robert Hotchkiss has boldly taken on a vast project- Writing a history of an entire continent, which by any stretch of the imagination would be a daunting task for even a seasoned writer, and he does it in a grand style that leaves you longing for more. This is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.
Original with a Capital "O"!.......2002-02-06
I thought that this was one of the most original and thought provoking books that I have ever read. After reading it, I really had to stop and wonder- What if? There really could be ruins of the world's last undiscovered civilization buried under all of that snow and ice, and perhaps even a remnant of it as this book eludes. But this book goes one step further and takes the framework of such intriguing possibilities, and fleshes it out with characters that are memorable, with action that is heartpounding and with intrigue and mystery that leaves one desperately wanting more. The good news is, I understand that more is on the way, and I look forward to "The Summoning" Robert Hotchkiss' second book in this wonderful series with great anticipation. I expect great things from this writer, and look forward to what the future holds in the way of great literary works from him.

A groundbreaking approach to improving the quality of your life through the most readily accessible resource: your breath. These safe and easy-to-learn techniques can also be used to treat asthma and ease stress, depression, eating disorders, insomnia, arthritis, chronic pain, and other debilitating conditions.
Customer Reviews:
Breathing my asthma away..........2007-06-30
I have mild asthma and used to use my rescue inhaler (albuterol) a couple of times a week, and more often in the winter. Then I read an article in Yoga Journal about how asthma treatment only addresses the symptoms, not the causes, of asthma. I would usually have an attack due to cold winter air, cigarette smoke and strong perfumes, and when I went jogging. My yoga teacher loaned me THE BREATHING BOOK, and I read about how "chest breathing"--breathing into the chest only instead of down into the belly--and breathing through your mouth can trigger attacks. I realized that I often would breathe through my mouth instead of my nose, and that I would habitually hold in my stomach and only breathe into my chest. This creates shoulder tension and also doesn't give the diaphragm time to rest. These things together, I learned from this book, can cause the symptoms of asthma. It's important to breathe in deeply, through the nose, and to allow the diaphragm a moment of rest after each exhalation. The book has simple breathing exercises for asthmatics and for many other physical conditions. When I read Farhi's advice, I changed my patterns and practiced conscious breathing, and almost immediately saw results. In just a couple of months, I found that I needed to use my inhaler less and less, only once or twice a month instead of once or twice a week. Of course, this might not work for everybody, and I still keep my inhaler with me always just in case, but for the price of the book and a small investment of time, I've seen an enormous improvement. After I returned my yoga teacher's copy of the book, I decided that I had to buy it for myself.
Not what I expected.......2004-09-06
I almost wonder if I have the same book as the other reviewers. I found this book very difficult to use. The chapters go on and on with theory and philosophy, but very little in the way of simple to follow exercises. Also, the book assumes you are already familiar with Yoga and are comfortable doing long stretching exercises before you begin.
I became interested in breathing excercises from Andrew Weil's tapes that accompany the "8 weeks" book. I was hoping for more exercises and perhaps even a couple of complete sets of exercises to go with what I had heard on the tapes. I envisioned doing excercises at the office in the morning or at home before bed to improve health and reduce stress. I did not need or want (yet) an exegesis of the theory of breath and health; nor was I looking for techniques that require special clothing, mats and pillows, and 10 minutes of set up.
If you want the full dose of theory, spirituality, new age physiology, etc., this is the book for you (and probably a very good one at that). But if you are looking for a simple breathing book to introduce you to breath work, this is probably not the book for you.
A Breath of Fresh Air.......2001-06-25
The book is simple to read, easy to follow and has clear explanations. It is well organized and the pictures are relevant.
Excellent book.......2000-05-17
I must admit I wasn't expecting to be impressed by this book yet I was. I liked the way the exercises were grouped so as to provide maximum benefit. It's also nice to get a complete understanding of what are the benefits to an exercise too. You can't go wrong with the clear directions provided by the author.
Easy to understand, read and implement step-by-step guide........1999-07-07
I really liked this book! It is thorough, easy to read and understand. This is the first time someone has explained it to me in a way I can understand it! Excellent diagrams, exercises, etc. Not only an outstanding yoga teacher but also a good book writer!
Book Description
An instant classic upon publication in 1978, THE BREADS OF FRANCE introduced American bakers to the pleasures of French artisanal breads. Author Bernard Clayton spent years visiting boulangeries both famous and unknown, collecting authentic bread recipes from some of the most esteemed bakers in France. The resulting treasure trove includes such classic regional breads as Petits Pains au Chocolat from Bracieux, Pain de Campagne from the Parisian master baker Poilâne, and Pumpkin-Cornmeal Bread from the French Basque country. Clayton's recipes are written in a unique step-by-step styleinstructions lucid and complete, questions anticipated and answeredthat evolved from his experiences teaching bread-baking classes. Filled with delightful vignettes of French culture, history, and bread-baking lore and charming black-and-white photographs, The Breads of France is not just a glorious collection of bread recipesit's a window onto the world's richest, most storied bread-baking tradition.
Customer Reviews:
a great how-to.......2007-06-29
This was the first and only bread-baking book I will ever buy. This was clearly a work of love as are the creations that are documented. It could serve as a model for how to write a how-to on any subject. I wish I could say that about other books I have bought on a variety of interests. I went from never having baked anything to producing the best breads I have ever eaten. His instructions are specific, detailed, and generous. They are simple. Most, however, involve long waiting periods in which the dough rises and develops flavor. You must therefore plan ahead and be ready for the next step. That step might be as simple as pounding the ball down and letting it rise again. How many of us know on Monday that we will be free and willing on Wednesday for a long night of baking? However, if you follow the instructions, they are foolproof. They are Americanized. Yet each French baker agreed that Clayton's version made in his kitchen on wheels was representative of the source recipe. Without any first-hand experience, you will agree.
Not For Beginners.......2006-08-11
The author wrote this book when most of us got our bread in the supermarket in white plastic bags with colored ballons on the label. The French are the best bread bakers in the world. Their love of great bread shows in the wild profusion of wonderful loaves that can be found throughout France. This book is a rather personal selection of recipes for breads that tickled the author's fancy during his explorations of French boulangeries. The author has taken the time to travel intimately through France, discovered many wonderful artisan breads, and gotten the recipes from the bakers. The recipes collected here are historically important. Not only are they wonderful things, but I would be willing to wager that many of these bakeries have gone extinct in the 3 decades since the author wrote this book. Most of the recipes are for famous, popular, or traditional breads that one would find in a French bakery, not those from French homes. There is no attempt to systematically treat all the major breads of France. If you have a basic understanding of making bread in your kitchen at home, this book will take you on a tour of all the wonderful, artisanal breads from France, home of the best bread in the universe. The variety of shapes, colors, and flavors from reasonably straight forward recipes was very satisfying.
The author has thoughtfully tested the artisan bread recipes he got, and come up with reasonably recipes that should more or less work in your kitchen. These recipes were written at the side of the oven, and not just on a computer like many other best-selling, current bread books I could name. The recipes themselves are rather problematic. If you are an experienced baker, you will find a wild profusion of artisan breads that you can do in your home kitchen. If you are a beginner and still trying to the hang of making bread, avoid this book as it is not an educational or learning tool. You need to be a good bread baker before you can make these recipes work correctly, and the author seems to assume that you have already mastered some of his other bread books. The recipe instructions can be downright terse. The author often does not clearly delineate when something is properly kneaded, sufficiently proofed, or correctly baked. He often does not include sufficient instructions on the proper method of mixing or kneading doughs. Each recipe step has a specific number of minutes, a very nice touch, but bread should be made by feel, not by the clock. Most recipes are kneaded by hand, not mixer.
There are no sourdough recipes, although some call for overnight proofing of the yeast. This is the first book, to my knowledge, to advocate pre-ferments, biga, poolish, pate fermentee, etc., even though he does not use these trendy terms. All recipes start with ordinary yeast you can get in the grocery store. Typical even of breads in France today, most recipes call for all purpose flour and not bread flour. In general, the recipes fall under the brioche, croissant, rye, or direct methods are not terribly difficult for the experience home bread baker. A few recipes require that you start the recipe a day or two before the day you want to bake, so that the yeast will develope depth of flavor.
All of the recipes are listed in the table of contents, a nice editorial touch I wish more authors and their editors would emulate. The original copyright on this book is 1978, but this reprint is dated 2002. Sadly, the information on available tools, sources of ingredients, etc., has not been updated. The recipes are organized according to region, not the classification of the bread. At the head of each region, the author includes a very nice travel log of the region and where he got the recipes from.
Despite the time the author spent in France doing research on bread, he seems not to have learned a key principle that flour should be measured by weight and not by volume. Not only do all recipes use cups of flour as the measure, he never specifies how he measures flour into the cup. Only in an obscure table on the last page do we learn that a cup of the author's flour weighs 4 3/4 oz, suggesting that he uses the dip and sweep method of flour measure. Most, but not all, of the recipes have pictures. It is a shame that these are not in color, as color is the best tool for judging when something is properly baked. As they say, a picture (in this case, a color one) is worth a thousand words.
The real experience - just like what we sampled in France.......2005-10-03
This book is a treasure trove. I'm not sure which recipes a previous reviewer said were inaccurate. We've not found any ourselves. This reminds us of our many times in Burgundy and the wonderful sandwiches we had for lunch each day. We did invest in several kitchen items after we bought the book, all Matfer Bourgeat: a round lined wicker basket, 2 - 2 baguette French Bread Pans, 2 - 1 lb. bread willow bannetons and a lame bread slashing tool. All were available at Amazon.com and were cheaper here than elsewhere on the internet.
Take your time with this book and do not rush through the recipes or take short cuts. Conditions in your kitchen: humidity and dryness, the freshness of your bread flour and yeast, the oven used will determine your success. Some adjustment may be necessary, but attempt the recipes as they are written the first time. Make sure your lame is clean when you make your cuts, wipe often.
Your reward will be wonderful artisian breads and baguettes. Enjoy!!
So Far, So Good... One of Many to Buy and Keep!.......2005-02-12
This book is one of many that I've purchased as I began making my own artisan breads. I like Bernard Clayton's writing style; he's friendly and informative, in addition to providing good recipes. I've found his measurements - in the 2002 edition - to be accurate and the directions easy to follow. The Pane Ordinaire on page 163 is the best French bread I've made so far. Okay, I incorporated techniques from Peter Reinhart and Rose Beranbaum, but the recipe and the majority of the techniques were Clayton's. I'd recommend this book as a must-have if you are building a bread-baking library.
Recipes not all accurate.......2004-10-17
I thought this book would be a good source of recipes. However, the crossiants were a disaster. Too much flour to too little butter. Much more success with Nick Malgieri's How to Bake recipe for crossiants, where the ratio of flour to butter makes more sense. Brioche came out ok with this book. It may be a classic, but that does not always mean success as newer books may provide better recipes from guru's such as Silverton, Levy and Malgieri.

Fun to read about French baking.......2007-09-14
I just fell in love with The Breads of France. It's so awesome! It has loads of interesting, doable recipes from all over France, divided by region, and so much variety. Brioches, bagels, quick breads, cookies, dinner rolls, croissants, Christmas stollen, and lots and lots of straight-up loaves of bread. The cultural information about the different areas of France and the background of the different breads was fascinating and fun to read.
I have to admit I haven't tried actually baking anything yet but it's such an interesting book just to read and look at, why sweat the baking? This book is definitely a terrific find.

Great Starter Book!.......2006-07-05
I breed Shih Tzu and I include this with my "puppy pack" for new owners. It is a great starter book for those who are not familiar with the breed, with great pictures and explanations. I would recommend a more thorough book for someone who already knows about the breed and wants more in-depth info, but for a beginning, this is the book!
A must have for Shih Tzu owners.......2002-08-09
I bought this book a month before I actually got my first Shih Tzu puppy. It welcomes you to the world of the Shih Tzu, and explains almost everything you need to know about the breed. I was fully prepared for when my puppy arrived home, and I learn most of it from this excellent book.
It is a must have for Shih Tzu owners, especially when you are not used to the breed yet. It goes from "What is a Shih Tzu?", the breed's history, bringing your dog home, to how to feed , groom and keep your Shih Tzu healthy. The last 2 parts of the book explain how to enjoy your dog(like basic training) and also recommended reading.
I recommend this book to Shih Tzu owners or for those who are considering getting a Shih Tzu. And by the way, Shih Tzu are great!!!...
Wonderful!.......2001-06-19
I just bought my first Shih Tzu, and I think this book is invaluable. It's clear, well organized, and it has information on a wide variety of important topics, like first aid, grooming, potty training, and more! Perfect for Shih Tzu owner!
a very informative little book.......2001-06-17
The book was very informative and easy to read. I would recommend this book to current and future shih tzu owners. The only drawback of the book is that there were some topics which I think are essential for every shih tzu owner to know, that were not explained in detail in this book. Jo Anne White proves though, that she is an authority in shih tzu knowledge and care.
induce vomitting when?.......2000-05-30
I enjoyed the entire section on the Shih tzu, but would have liked to read more about only the Shih tzu. For general dog information, I can get other books.
This however was the only book I have found that has an extensive list on poisons for dogs, especially in people food. There is one section on when to induce vomiting, and there is (I believe) a huge typo. It says to induce vomiting when the dog has eaten something sharp and something else. I think it should say "DO NOT induce vomiting.!
In the list of poisons, it would be interesting to see what the side effects are. Ex. Onions cause autoimmune something anemia.

Best Book on 60's Counterculture Collectibles.......2007-07-11
This is a well presented historical collection of the 60's counterculture revolution in terms of the "artifacts" that have been collected for many years by this forward thinking individual.
For anyone who has lived through the Sixties this book will bring back memories of the era with all the background information that is presented.
Any of the younger generation that have interest in this unique era of social change and want to know what it was all about, this book imparts a true feel for the times, thanks to the author--who lived it.
The photos are well presented, the book is organized into different categories of collecting, and I recommend reading it if only just for the comprehensive info of an important but little researched subject.

Great book - easy read.......2007-07-31
This is an easy to read, easy to understand book on organic gardening. It is very straight forward and doesn't assume more than basic gardening knowledge - just as it should.
Easy and Informative.......2005-10-03
Good primer for a beginning organic gardener. You can read it cover to cover or skip around to find information on your specific organic gardening needs. The book takes a pragmatic look at the challenges of organic gardening while keeping the "first, do no harm" philosophy in tact. The technical information and references are comprehensive without being overwhelming.
Amazon.com
The ubiquitous For Dummies series, while not known for pretty illustrations or lush photography, does manage to pack the maximum amount of information into an easy-to-read format--something that gardeners with an eye on the financial bottom line love. For vegetable gardeners, the right information is especially important, because if you don't end up with edible food on the table, you've failed. Charlie Nardozzi and the National Gardening Association editors seem comfortingly aware of this fact, but they also want to make vegetable gardening fun and interesting, and to that end there's a lot more here than just the standard tomatoes and zucchini. Bok choy, fingerling potatoes, kabocha squash, daikon radishes--they've included just about every vegetable you might be able to think of, with pithy recommendations of the tastiest and easiest-to-grow varieties.
The book's first three chapters deal with deciding what to plant, where to plant it, and when. Nardozzi then turns the bulk of the book--nine chapters--over to the vegetables themselves: the tomato (the most popular vegetable for the home gardener); the pepper and eggplant; root crops; legumes; vine crops; cole crops, such as broccoli and cabbage; greens; and sweet corn and unusual vegetables. A special chapter goes to nonvegetables like herbs and berries. The book's third section is devoted to gardening techniques, which more experienced gardeners may want to turn to immediately. There's good, solid information here on irrigation, mulching, reading a fertilizer label, companion and secession planting, and much more. As with all For Dummies titles, the resources listed in the appendix are comprehensive and up to date, and the index (without which any reader might be lost) is complete and useful.

A must have for every gardener!.......2001-02-03
This is a great book for any vegetable gardener. It is easy to follow and you don't have to read it from start to finish. It is laid out so you can go to the sections that interest you the most. I am a first year gardener, and I got many, many compliments on my first ever vegetable garden, thanks mostly to the help of this book. A must have!
Any Gardener's Must-Have Book.......2000-04-05
I have other gardening books, but none of them are as easy-to-follow or as comprehensive as this one. The text is so much fun, it's easy to read cover-to-cover. Yet, if you need specific information on a certain type of vegetable or technique, the index is very easy to use. The appendix gives the dates and growing seasons for every major (or minor) city in the U.S., as well as additional resources and catalogs to consult. A wonderful resource for a novice or an experienced gardener.
Very informative.......2000-03-28
Like the rest of the books in the Dummies series, this book takes a light-hearted approach to a heavy topic such as gardening. By focusing on vegetables the content remains helpful and informative. The book was divided into sensible sections--the basics, what to plant, how to plant, and so forth. I appreciated the instruction on gardening beginnings such as constructing a bean pole and what tools a novice needs. The last half of the book talks about specific vegetables, and has handy information on what grows best where. I believe this makes a good first-time gardener book or a companion to a book with more pictures.

Book Description
The fall of Samaria is narrated in 2 Kings 17. The cuneiform inscriptions dealing with this event are prima facie contradictory: the conquest is ascribed to both Shalmaneser V and Sargon II. The surmise of H. Tadmor that Samaria was conquered twice is investigated. At the same time the events are interpreted in their socio-historical framework. Tadmor's assumption cannot be falsified, although his theory should be modified as regards the date of the first conquest: 723 B.C.E. The fall of Samaria can be interpreted as an inevitable result of the expansion of the Assyrian Empire in combination with internal struggles in Israel. Evidence of deportation reveals that deportees were treated as normal citizens. Thorough discussion of the sources and their interpretation is a feature of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2000-09-14
Well written and thorough. I learned a lot of things that I would not have known had I just relied on the Adobe manual and books.
excellent.......1999-05-20
Clear, concise and to the point. The author is direct and plain spoken; the book is thorough and contains lots of tips and tricks.
Worthless.......1999-04-27
I was hoping for at least a few templates in the CD part of the book. Templates allow one to explore the funcionality of the program and expand on one's knowledge, if any. I was very dissapointed. There are NO TEMPLATES IN THIS BOOK!
Great Reading! Helpful, To-The-Point, and Comprehensive........1999-01-20
I have bought and read dozens of computer books for various programs. Nobody does it like Nigel! I actually read this manual cover to cover and couldn't put it down. His writing is personable and witty, his organization is "intuitively correct" (just as you are thinking a question, he gives you the answer), and his tips and tactics are SO HELPFUL! PageMaker was very intimidating to me because I was used to amateur programs that do most functions automatically. No offense to Aldus, but their manual made things worse. It was confusing and assumed that I knew things I didn't. Nigel was exactly the teacher I needed. I learned PageMaker's functions easily and even learned how to deal with tricky issues as they arise. I highly recommend this book to anyone who owns PageMaker or is thinking of buying it. Even if you already know the program, I bet you'll learn some great time-savers and handy tricks from this manual.
P.S. The CDROM at the back has some cool programs that enhance PageMaker. Well worth the $$$!

Book Description
A true story of two young people of different races and cultures who meet in Japan, fall in love and, despite the hatred of four years of brutal warfare between their nations, marry. The opposition of Keiko's samurai family, Dick's Methodist parents, and the Navy bureaucracy is nearly overwhelming.

Two loving people, two vanishing cultures.......2001-11-22
One of the best things about this book is that it provides firsthand accounts, sliced two different ways, of old Japan and rural Delmarva America, two isolated cultures that, sadly, may be rapidly vanishing in this modern globalized age.
The first part of the story is set in Japan in 1956. The narrative is organized into chapter sections voiced alternatively by Dick then Keiko. We see Keiko's musings on Japanese life, her upbringing, and her encounters with Americans, including the one that was persistently courting her. Interwoven with this are Dick's impressions of America, his rural childhood, his naval service, and his encounters with Japan, Keiko and her family, grappling with the complex social protocols and deciphering things meant but unsaid. After they marry and move to America, the tables are turned somewhat and Keiko struggles with isolation and American peculiarities as they start a family and settle into a hectic suburban lifestyle. The cross-cultural impressions are fascinating and often bewildered and funny, but the native viewpoints are candid and valuable as well.
Along the way Dick and Keiko are both tempted by alternative life paths of wealth and security that would only be possible without the other--a Japanese doctor wants to marry Keiko; people speak of Dick as Senate material and he has ground-floor opportunities in local beachfront real estate and insurance businesses. But they remain true to their hearts and to each other. Throughout the story, xenophobic or racist reactions from others are anticipated and dreaded, but in the end, thankfully, families and friends mostly express only acceptance and love.
This is a valuable work, both for the present day and for preserving a record of these two loving people and their two wonderful cultures, for our grandchildren's grandchildren!

A Beautiful Love Story!.......2001-09-09
Reading "The Shotoku Teahouse" is a wonderful adventure into a different world and a different culture...Japan in the 1930's- 1950's. The story is told from two different viewpoints...Dick, the American Navy Man; Keiko, the Young Japanese Lady. I especially enjoyed seeing how American life...(eating habits, language idioms, manners, and religious beliefs)....looks to someone raised in the older Japanese culture.
I wish the story would have continued, telling about the rest of their life together. I wanted to know how they came to Elizabethtown, and about the next 3 children. It would have been interesting to know how their children felt about their interracial background. Perhaps they will write a sequel?
I gave the book 4 stars. BR> But I highly recommend the book!
The Shotoku Teahouse - A Fascinating Trip.......2001-03-17
I just finished "The Shotoku Teahouse" yesterday evening. What a lovely and fascinating trip through the cultures and lives of two special people. I learned much that I didn't know. And I learned that the two special people I did know are even more special. I particularly liked the interweaving of the contributions of each of you. The insight into the mind and emotions of each of you as you began your relationship, and then found ways to continue it in spite of "overwhelming odds" was a treat. Since my World War II memories were very similar to Dick's, and the community in which I lived had the same kind of mores as Delaware, I found the descriptive phrases to be very familiar. My own experience of the way blacks were treated; the way German prisoners of war were treated and spoken about; spending time in the Aircraft Warning Service tower watching for airplanes; playing with bubble gum cards with cruel pictures of Japanese "atrocities", and to set those experiences over against Keiko's experiences from a Japanese perspective was thought provoking... This wonderful trip into the Japanes customs and the comparison that you both described as you came to understand one another were wonderful. All in all, very worth the read. And more than that, it was a refreshment of my experience of each of you in our time together since our meeting in E-town. I laughed where many others will not because they have never seen Keiko try to tell a joke or try to make sense of our idioms. They have never seen her sparkle, not the way she bursts with fun. I rejoiced in the eating and meal descriptions more than some, because I've had the real pleasure of being at a table spread with Keiko's delights. I traveled more knowingly with Dick's introspections, because I know how investigation and searching for meaning and understanding are so much a part of who you are. And because I know the careful student and teacher that you are, I did not have to raise questions about your interpretations and understanding of history and culture. And I vibrated with common feelings of both of you about the necessity of seeing past our outer features and rejoicing in the variety of experiences which are available when cultures and people interact and enjoy one another. Enough already. As you can see, I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Thanks for letting me know about the book. I'll be glad to recommend it to friends. It would make a great story for a movie or a TV special if they wouldn't butcher it up with normal media goodies. The experience of melding two cultures in such a volitile time is very informative and inspiring.
