Fun series of books.......2007-06-08
Great quick reads for the purse to read in waiting rooms, etc.
Solid 4 stars.......2007-05-24
The latest installment in the Pet Sitter Mysteries, sends Ms. Kendra Ballantyne back to practicing law, with the guarantee that she can pick up clients involving pets at a low cost. She's got a few of those, along with another big murder to solve .... one that puts her sometimes/kinda boyfriend, Jeff, as the lead suspect.
Start of a love-triangle, with the appearance of Jeff's ex-wife Amanda, who needs Jeff's PI expertise in stopping a stalker ... or should I say a love-square, since Kendra also spends some time with the new person renting out her house.
Kept me guessing until the end.
Can A Blue Macaw Be A Witness?.......2007-03-13
Kendra Ballantyne is back practicing law, and she's still a pet-sitter on the side. She's asked to help on a new real estate case with her law partner, Ezra Cossner. Kendra is none too pleased. First, her specialty has become pet law, and second, Ezra is cranky. Before the case can get off the ground, Ezra is found murdered in his office. The only witness is Gigi, his blue macaw, and she's not talking. All she can say is her own name and sing "99 Bottles of Beer."
When Detective Ned Noralles shows up to investigate, Kendra knows things won't be easy. But then her hunky PI boyfriend, Jeff Hubbard, becomes the number one suspect, she begins to investigate the myriad of suspects.
Plus Jeff seems to be getting pretty friendly with his ex. Kendra finds her eyes wandering and they soon land on her neighbor.
I love this series. Kendra is such a fun person. I like it when she's working with the various pets. I'm hoping she'll spend more time in the upcoming books in this capacity. But I do see why having her get back into law helps provide more storylines. Plus who'd want to hire a pet sitter whose clients kept dying?
This is a series where you'll laugh out loud! Don't read it when you have to be quiet! I highly recommend it.
Getting Better.......2006-10-29
This is an enjoyable series, and this installment was much better than the last two.
The only problem I have with the series is that it never seems like Kendra really solves anything -- she just seems to run around town accusing everyone until she finally hits on the right culprit.
Looking forward to the next installment.
Pet lover cozy.......2006-06-21
Kendra Ballantyne is a full time, hard hitting lawyer in L.A. She has recently had her right to practice law reinstated and is anxious to keep it that way. So she is less than pleased when she is assigned to work with the elderly and cranky law partner, Ezra Cossner, on a real estate case that may be a no win situation. But she is willing to take a chance on Ezra since he is the proud owner of Gigi, the blue macaw that loudly shares his office. But Gigi becomes an orphan when Ezra is found shot to death in his office. Kendra's nemesis from the past, Detective Ned Noralles, is determined to hang the murder on her all too sexy boyfriend, P.I. Jeff Hubbard. It is up to Kendra to figure out who had a reason to murder Ezra before more bodies appear.
In addition to her job as up and coming lawyer Kendra is a professional pet sitter. In between cases she makes the rounds of her dog walking, pet visiting duties. It is a job she started to pay the bills when her law practice was on hold and it is one she does want to give up. So in addition to 10 hour work days, Kendra and her own dog Lexie stay busy checking up her 4 legged charges, and ocasionally, their 2 legged owners. With Jeff seemingly over involved with his ex, Kendra's neighbor is looking better all the time- not just her client Beggar but also his attractive owner Russ.
Linda O. Johnston has created a wonderful new addition to the ranks of amateur detectives. Kendra Ballantyne is the feisty, intelligant, caring professional we all want our daughters to become. The well timed humor used through out the story sets it above the current crowded crop of cozy mystery series. Johnston's ability to blend pet love, mystery and romance into one well wrapped package make this a summer treat for mystery and pet lovers alike.

Things begin to make more sense.......2006-05-28
If you've read all the previous volumes of Seraphic Feather then you're probably pretty confused. This volume begins to explain a few things, though certainly not everything. We find out a about where Kei came from and why she isn't any older. Sunao's powers continue to develop. A number of shadow players unveil their plans for the moon.
That's not to say that everything is explained. Indeed with the new characters showing up, more questions are raised.
As always the art in these books are far more beautiful and far more impressive than the writing. The people and the futuristic vistas are gorgeous, the action is thrilling and full of energy. The quality of the art alone is worth the price of the book.
great art...reading it not as fun.......2005-07-28
Seraphic feather is a futuristic story that takes place in the moon, i quite don't understand whats the role of each character yet, but they all gather in the moon after some tragedy ocurred, each character looking for a mysterious item called the emblem seed.
The story in itself is not as interesting and the way is told is very complex...it has a lot of flashback that instead of adding to the mystery of the characters just confuses you...but who cares? hiroyuke utatane is one of the best manga artists i've seen...his style is unique the moment you see the interior art it will grip you...the sexyness of the characters (both male and female) and the action scenes are worth taking a look

Very impressed with the current information found in this book - there are many adult ADD books on my shelf, but this is in my top 3 books for everyday referals...worth purchasing!
2 Old 2 B Relevant.......2006-06-30
Murphy's "Out of the Fog" was published in 1995 -- that's 11 years behind the times! While he might include some informative and interesting stuff here, ADD/ADHD research is piling up with new insights and implications for personal and social-political use.
The very best new work out there, as of 2006, is Thomas E. Brown's "Attention Deficit Disorder: The Unfocused Mind in Children and Adults." Brown, a psychiatry prof at Yale's School of Medicine and the associate director of the Yale Clinic for Attention and Related Disorders, hasn't written a self-help guide here; instead, he's crafted the best overview of current thinking about ADD. He answers doubters -- and, refreshingly, discusses why a number of doubts about the very existence of ADD exist.
If you really want to know about ADD, this is the book.
Out of the Fog: Treatment Options and Coping Strategies for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders.......2006-05-30
After completing this review, I realized that if you have ADHD (like me), you may need to take a break in order to make it through to the end.
I am experienced reader of books on the subject of ADHD. The first thing I noticed about the book was the small font and paragraphs which extended very close to the edge of the pages. This is not ADHD-friendly. That said, an effort is made to use summary paragraphs. However, as most all ADHD books feature blocking information, summarizing, and reviewing. I tend to expect this rather than appreciate it. Another feature of the book which threw me off (repeatedly): randomly placed (long and winding) case studies (e.g. "Amy had just been diagnosed ...).
Per the DSM IV, "ADHD" is the proper term and covers three sub-types. The term ADD is no longer used (it's a sub-type under "ADHD"). The author explains this and then, states: "In the interest of simplicity, we will use the term ADD to refer to all three forms." I stopped and scratched my head ... does he believe his reader base to be so inattentive as to render them unable to deal with an extra letter to describe the very condition about which the book is written? That leads to the second question, does simplicity really call for the incorrect labeling of the subject matter of you book? Lastly, even before the DSM IV change, "ADD" as a label leaves out hyperactivity (and combined) - making it simple, but wrong. Why not refer to it properly and in doing so, encompass the entirety of those with the DSM IV's definition of ADHD?
Okay, this guy is old school and wants to save "H" for "simplicity" of reading. I moved on. Shortly thereafter, I got the sensation that I needeed to break out the pom-poms. I don't read about my ADHD to learn all the "wonderful" things I can accomplish despite my condition. At this point, I was becoming impatient. I flipped to the front of the book and noted it is still on the first version which is dated 1995. I knew the medication chapter should make for some useless reading. I had to flip to the chapter covering medication to find out just how useless. As expected, the chapter is pitifully outdated. Without getting specific, I will just let you know that the chapter spends most of its time on Ritalin as the AD(H)D medication and Prozac as a good anti-depressant. Don't waste your time. "Scattered Minds" by Adler (2006) offers medication information to such a greater extent, that fact alone would justify choosing "Scattered Minds" over "Out of the Fog" if you had only once choice.
So, why the 3 stars - kinda high based on my gripes, huh? I set aside my "ADD" label annoyance, worked through the small font and crammed pages, long and winding case studies, and woefully outdated medicaion infomation. What I found is this book offers very useful coping strategies for Adult ADHD. The book also does an excellent job of identifying problems ADHD creates (which leads to the coping advice). The author knows the subject very well. In this regard, the book is better than average.
I have to mention the book's information regarding how to cope with everyday life. You need to take advantage of technology's cutting edge equipment: "computers, fax machines, calculators, and voicemail." Wow. The calculator? It sure is an improvement over that time-intensive abacus.
Those with ADHD will find the layout of this book poor to the point to classify it as a non-starter. If you desire to understand a loved-one's condition, you would certainly benefit from the information (except medication and technology) provided. If you are looking to get your ADHD life under control, I suggest "10 Simple Solution to Adult ADD" (Sarkis, 2005) because it is laid out with the intended audience in mind. It is a quick hitting, information intensive read. (Yes, Sarkis also calls it ADD - oh well.)

Out of the Fog: Treatment Options and Coping Strategies for Adult Attention Deficit Disorders.......2005-10-17
This book has been very helpful so far. It is giving me new ways to think about old problems. I'm only half-way through, but am trying to get a handle on the time management/organizational problems with the help of one of the strategies suggested. I would imagine that most of this information would seem very obvious to the "normal" person, but to those of us who are "in the fog", it is invaluable. Thanks for writing this book Dr. Murphy!

Delicious healthy recipes, in bulk!.......2005-02-04
"1,001 More Low-Fat Recipes," by Sue Spitler (with Linda R. Yoakam, R.D., M.S.), almost measures up to its predecessor ("1,001 Low-Fat Recipes," by the same authors), but not quite.
Nutrition information (approximate, of course) is helpfully provided with every recipe. It includes calories, fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, carbohydrates--but unfortunately for Weight Watchers POINTS folks, no fiber.
I find that the authors seem to have a good sense for how to blend flavors well, and also have a good sense for when you should allow flavors to blend before eating and for how long (the book says to refrigerate the chutney cheese spread for an hour or two before eating, and you really should--it tastes incredible after it's been in the fridge for a while!). The authors do a wonderful job of helping you tailor recipes to your own tastes. They often pick a few ingredients and give a measurement range for them instead of a strict measurement or directions to use "to taste." I love this because it provides some guidelines to give you an idea of what would taste good, but lets you use more or less as suits you individually.
Some of the recipe textures aren't quite as appealing. It seems like no matter what you do to it, fat-free cream cheese just doesn't come out smooth and creamy. I tried two recipes from this book that used it and both looked and felt slightly off, even if they did taste wonderful. I wish the use of fat-free ingredients had been slightly more sparing.
Most of the recipes are incredibly simple. This is a very straightforward book--more than 800 pages of quick-and-easy recipes. No photos. No fancy glossy paper. No three-page complicated directions. Layout is equally uncomplicated, with straight lists of ingredients and short, numbered instructions. Most recipes only consist of a few steps once you get a bit of chopping or shredding out of the way.
Whether you want to make Vegetable Moussaka, Veal Lady Sharon, Sweet Potato and Tempeh Patties, or plain old Chicken and Noodles, you'll find it here. This is not a vegetarian cookbook; however there's definitely a focus on fruits, legumes and vegetables. There's also more than enough vegetarian fare, I believe, to satisfy a vegetarian, including an entire chapter of vegetarian (not vegan) entrees.
While I don't think this follow-on is quite as stunning as its predecessor, it's solidly good and well worth getting if you want a source of simple, healthy, delicious recipes.
Proof that low-fat doesn't mean low flavor!.......2004-01-31
I can't say enough good things about this cookbook! From hearty soups and breads to pasta dishes, vegetarian choices, and the all-important desserts, it's got something for everyone. Many of the recipes use commonly-stocked ingredients, and it's a perfect resource for planning a week's worth of healthy meals. I have yet to try a recipe I don't like...and I think I'm on 999! Well worth the money.
some good recipes.......2002-08-27
This cookbook has several good recipes that I've tried, and I'm sure more good ones I haven't tried yet. I honestly think the book would be better if it were more like 500 recipes (less overwhelming than 1,001), and the occasional illustration would be nice. This one is better than her first 1,001 Low Fat Recipes, in part because it has fewer hard to get or obscure ingredients. So if you want to get only one of the two, get this one. Be sure to try the black and white bean chili.
Low Fat Yet Fine Dining!.......2001-03-26
This cookbook has excellent recipes for the gourmet and for the cook who just has people to feed, plain and simple. It is very "user friendly" and clear and gives those who want or need to keep their fat and caloric intake at a certain level a delicious and easy way to do so. Helps immensely in maintaining a fit weigh of life!

Required reading from many top breeders.......2004-04-10
We've been researching breeders in the U.S. (California to Massachusetts), Canada and Australia for 2 years.
Let me tell you ... this book is REQUIRED reading for many of the top breeders.
Seemingly basic information such as "what type of food" is short-term information. DeeDee knows that the list of top quality dog foods changes every year. Food choice can also be a pedigree/line decision and is often in a puppy contract. Such basic information should be assessable from your quality breeder.
Mastiff Aristocratic Guardian by DeeDee Andersson.......2003-05-30
I found this book a complete waist of time, I found it had too much filler information. I had purchased this book after reading the above reviews, but I was extremely disappointed. I paid full price for this book and understand why the price has dropped. Very good book are: Mastiff by Kim Campbell Thornton and The Mastiff, An Owners guide to a happy healthy Pet by John M. Becknell. With the above two books you will not be disappointed in your selection of either one. Feeding a OEM puppy is very important, and Ms. Andersson "would never presume to tell an owner what to feed their puppy". Well guess what, I purchased this book to find out what to feed by puppy. Good luck
This book should go home with every new Mastiff puppy.......2003-02-14
Knowledgable, well-written, fun, and useful. It's like chatting with a fellow Mastiff-maniac.
If you don't have a Mastiff already, get this book and read the chapter about how they will take over your life. If you aren't up to rearranging your life for your dogs, don't get a Mastiff - but they are worth it!
If you only buy one, this should be it!.......2000-06-06
If you only plan on buying one book about Mastiffs, this should be it. I own several mastiff books, but I go to this one when I need information. It is as great a refrence book for the first time owner as it is for the experienced breeder. Full of beautiful pictures, charming anecdotes and detailed history, this book is incredibly informative. Other than the dogs themselves this has been my best mastiff purchase. All mastiff owners and those thinking of becoming mastiff owners should own this book.
Mastiff Magic.......2000-05-03
As a first-time Mastiff-owned person, I was very happy when I received this book as a gift. From the moment I opened it, I knew that this book would be my Mastiff bible. It is filled with historic facts (did you know that Mastiffs were declawed, by law, in the middle ages! ), amusing stories about Mastiffs (you'll see your own dog in these tales), medical information, top producing dogs and bitches, and tons of pictures... this book has it all. Breeders and owners alike will delight in reading this book over and over again. If you are even considering brining one of these gentle giants into your life, this book is a must-read. Mastiffs are not for everyone, but for those of us who are lucky enough to be owned by a Mastiff, I can assure you that this book will become your other best friend. dee dee Anderson knows her audience well; we all love Mastiffs as much as she does.
Book Description
Rich in history and valor, the multicolored woven art known as "tartan" is centuries old but has been codified only since the late eighteenth century. Conjuring images of kilted warriors and lively bagpipes, tartan has survived hundreds of years to become the very fabric of a nation--as popular today as in years past. "All Scots are color coded," it is said, and in this second of three alphabetically arranged volumes you will find over 400 examples of vividly striped tartans covering the names Frederickton to MacNeil. "What are my colors?" is the most frequently asked question of the International Association of Tartan Studies, and chances are you will find them in this beautifully illustrated book. Compiled from the nearly 5000 tartans in the Association's database and selected by two leading authorities, this outstanding assortment ranges from the simplest to the most complex. Includes brief historical background, definitions of related terms, and thread counts for the tartan weaver. An invaluable resource for families, clubs, historians, and designers.

even better than the revised edition.......2005-09-15
i have a fairly extensive florida gardening library. i borrowed this book & found it one of the best reference books i have ever used. after purchasing the revised edition, i found that though out-of-print, it is still far superior than anything else available.
Green Thumb Brain is a liar........2005-07-22
I really was not impressed- with the lawn nor the huge green digit he likes to boast about.
Excellent resource for the 'green thumbs' of Florida.......2005-07-22
I found this book to be an excellent resource for gardening in Florida. My job allows me to have significant free time, so I was able to read this book about 6 hours a day. What I gleened from it was invaluable information about how to get your lawn looking as green as possible, healthy and mature.
I very nice side benefit to having the best lawn on the block is being able to impress the ladies (and Sandip) with it. I cant count the number of times that I got a side benefit from my lawn.
Outdated.......2005-04-28
This book is way too general and most definitely outdated. Many plants one might consider for Florida are missing; for those interested in North Florida gardening, many plants are discouraged that have, in the last ten years, been bred to withstand a cooler climate. For example, he excludes gardenias for North Florida, but I've grown them quite successfully as far north as Charlotte, NC. Where is info on Sago Palms (I know they're Cycads), but they are popular in Florida - why no info? The "Annual" section reads like a northeast primer.
In the last 10 years Elephant Ears have exploded in variety, in this book, just a vague short paragraph addresses this exotic foliage. Definitely need something more up to date.
STAN DEFREITAS IS THE BEST FOR GARDENING! GREAT!!!.......2002-06-23
Im new to florida and got some advice from a friend about contacting my local Horticulture Extension Service, and when I told them I had dozens of questions about gardening and was looking for a self help guide to Florida Gardening, they had only name for me, "STAN DEFREITAS!" I thought one guy for entire state, come on? Well, after I bought the book I soon realized this guy put together a miniature enclyclopedia of do's and don'ts for The Entire State of Florida and it's easy to read. Before I plant it, I check with the book and I never have had problem! Enough said! A twenty dollar investment a the rest of my life a succesful gardener! Thanks Stan Way to Go!

for citrus growers.......2007-01-27
a very useful and short guide for citrus amateurs growers. Very imortant and good information about citrus USDA zones and many citrus varietes carefully described. I think there is a essentail book for amateur citrus growers in temperate zones (atlantic europe coast)
Nice Guide for the Novice.......2007-01-10
The nursery where I bought my citrus tress recommended this book. I think it provides a very comprehensive coverage of growing citrus in AZ. This is a must for your reference library.
Great pictures, but could have been better.......2004-07-18
The book is attractive and does contain a lot of information about different citrus varieties. My main criticism is that the Planting and Care section could have been much more substantial. Specifically, since the descriptions of various citrus ailments (poor nutrition, inappropriate watering, infection with pests) are not accompanied by photos of the symptoms, it makes it harder for the reader to figure out what these problems might actually look like. The black-and-white pen-and-ink drawings of pests are somewhat informative, but they're very limited compared to what might be conveyed by a photo.
Also, a few diagrams to help illustrate "good pruning" would have been great.
I'm not suggesting that this book should have been a definitive technical treatise on citrus, but I think it would have been more useful if more attention had been paid to what goes wrong when you're trying to grow citrus.
subtropical fruit for third world country's information.......2001-12-20
This book has informatiom for the professional as well as the village farmer in Africa , its teachings are simple and clear for all those interested in the subject to follow , the illustrations and instructions are simple even for those with a basic knowledge of subtropical fruit growing. Africa is not covered in the distribution map never the less the fruits are for example the mango tree is synonymous with Africa , it gives food, and shelter from the elements and fuel what more can you want from a tree. Every African school would benefit from a book like this , and i know one that will.
Great citrus guide with wonderful pix/info.......2001-10-10
I have read several other books on citrus cultivation, but this book is by far the best i've run across. It has excellent photographs of the hundreds of citrus fruits, both on the tree and of the inside of the fruit itself. It has some great citrus recipes, but it mainly focuses on the cultivation and care of each variety. This book tells the grower what he/she can exactly expect to see, and how to best care for your tree. If there is ANYTHING this book lacks, it is more info on out-of-zone citrus gardening. For example, i live in NC and i have phenomenal success with all my trees in containers (i winter them in a "cheap" plastic greenhouse). That is my only criticism of this book---otherwise, all cultivar info is detailed and well illustrated!!!!

Excellent Reference.......2003-06-05
Although not the most interesting "read", this is a great reference book for gardening in South Florida. Straight forward without too much fluff. The section on pest control is a little heavy on identifying pests and little light on how to control them but the rest of the book is very clear on the basics. Probably not the best book for an advanced gardener but I highly recommend it for the novice like me who wants the nitty gritty on how to get going in Florida but doesn't care about a fancy looking book.
Very good reference for selecting bedding plants in Florida.......2001-09-22
I thought this was an excellent reference for selecting Florida bedding plants. I wanted a book that had lots of pictures of various plants and told me when and where to plant them. This book does that. It is limited on pest control, but has a good basic section on digging and prepping your bedding areas. It would be a great reference to take with you to the nursery when you are trying to decide which plants to purchase for your beds. It has more color photos for identification of bedding plants than most of the Florida gardening books out there.
Poor.......2000-05-18
I was so dispappointed in the presentation made in this book that I sent it back. The cover and even title give the impression that the book will include photgraphic and descriptive information regarding landscaping. What actually comes across is a very boring, poorly presented reference type of book that simply seems like an elaborate dictionary on various landscape terminology. The photographic connections were especially done poorly; all pictures relating to topics were simply united together in a large section at the back of the book. When a reference is made by an author regarding a specific subject, it is certainly best understood and appreciated by the reader when both are on the same page. It was also misleading in their title reference to Florida plants, shrubs, etc., that there would be direct inclusion of information of those subjects, but all that comes across is very general information relating to the words themselves. I have been working on my own Florida yard area now for over 5 years, enjoying what I have been learning by simple hands-on techniqe and questions to my neighbors. None of my own 26 personal plants were even directly mentioned in the book. Again, possibly some of the topics regarding pests or plant diseases might have been appreciated if the information would have been on the same pages as the related photographs--needing to turn clear to the the back of the book every time was a frustrating way to try and understand the connections.

Book Description
Specimens of 38 of the finest type families in the world are brought together in Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces, making it an invaluable reference tool for graphic designers, editors, art directors, production managers, desktop publishers, and students. Each type family is shown in display and text specimens with complete fonts including italic and bold variations; extended families such as Futura and Univers include additional type weights and widths. Each type family's section opens with a full-page experimental design, created by an outstanding graphic designer to demonstrate its potential. The specimens are accompanied by a concise discussion of each type family's origins, charactertistics, and usage. Typographic specimens provide an opportunity to study typefaces, to select and plan typography, and to increase one's knowledge of letterforms. Drawing and tracing specimens remain excellent ways to understand type and create logos and other typographic designs. Study of specimens aids in the selection of fonts to be purchased for the font library. Typographic specimens introduce unfamiliar typefaces in printed form and aid in the development of connoisseurship. Comparative analysis of similar faces in printed form becomes possible. Over one hundred prominent designers and design educators were sent a ballot listing all major typefaces and were asked to vote for the type families that best fulfilled their personal criteria for typographic excellence. The typefaces contained in this book represent the results of this poll, providing a compendium of excellent typefaces that have stood the test of time. Typographic Specimens: The Great Typefaces will provide information, inspiration, and a keener knowledge of typography. Get Face to Face With the Great Ones.......2005-06-29
Goes well with Revival of the Fittest also edited by Meggs. This sample book is different in that the faces shown were chosen by other designers. The faces seen in this book are the ones that you will be using 95% of the time. It is always good to study the classic faces in detail to get a better sense of their character and see the posibilities in their shapes.
