I read "Just Desserts," and found it pretty interesting, and was looking forward to seeing what happened with Judith and Joe, her high school boyfriend from several years ago. While this book mentions Joe and there is some slight interaction, it seems to me to be long and rambling, and the "Sacred Eight" characters are just annoying. I may try to read the next in the series, but I'm struggling to finish this one! Have no doubts, I WANTED to enjoy this book, but it seems tedious and slow-moving.

In this book Judith McMonigle, madcap proprietor of a bed-and-breakfast, leaves her establishment to go on a vacation to Vancouver with her cousin and best friend, Renie. They go to the Clovia Hotel, a favorite with Renie and her husband, and while there they meet Marie, a girlhood friend who was a professional dancer and is now married to Max, a famous producer. Marie asks her old friends to join her and her friends who are all luminaries in the theater. Early in the book there is a murder, and Marie and her friends are the chief suspects. Judith, of course, feels that she is better qualified to solve the case than are the local police investigators. She and Renie follow several red herrings and pursue the pasts of each of their eight companions, with sometimes disastrous, sometimes hilarious results. This is a pleasant "cozy" for those who enjoy the genre.

This is the first of, I believe, three cookbooks by the Casadas. This is, without a doubt, the best venison cookbook in existance. I have about 20 venison cookbooks. This is the best. I really like the slow cooker section.

This cookbook was mentioned in our local paper as "the best venison cookbook ever." I was tired of game cookbooks with exotic recipes, while meanwhile we have 100 pounds of venison in the freezer. This book is great!! Special recipes for prime cuts, yes; but also chapters on using the crockpot, ground venison, casseroles, grilling, stews, and soups. Within a month I had tried ten recipes and they were all excellent. You will not face the dilemma of a significant portion of frozen venison in October with this book. I only wish I had ordered it sooner.

I realize this is one of the definitive studies of the PBGV, but for the average prospective pet owner, it is just a slog. The first 200-some pages are devoted to the evolution of the breed from one country and century to another. Ho hum. It wasn't until page 243 that I finally found what I needed to know about the characteristics of the dog that would matter to me as a potential owner.

It takes place in South Africa, 1883. Boy likes girl but doesn't think he's good enough and is convinced she'll never stay anyway. Girl likes boy and is determined to show him she'll stay and he deserves love. He's a bushman who transports diamonds, she's a governess fresh out of England, come to claim her inheritance. He is hired to escort her. He doesn't think she'll make it in the wild but she's smarter and tougher than she looks. Spunky heroine, lovable hero. Good book.
Terrible Writing.......2005-07-02
I have a problem with a romance where the heroine is snooty, obnoxious, and supercilious, and the love-interest is arrogant and narrow-minded.
There was no real story or character development here. It seemed every page was filled with ways to pass the time until the lover's next rendezvous.
The woman was overly dainty and stupidly headstrong at the same time, hard to pull off, harder to read about. The man was not sexy, he seemed rather mean actually.
The story as filled with internal monologues filled with terrible excuses for romantic writing, and the only thing filling their heads was eachother's beauties. The struggle in this story was too annoying to believe and the characters and plot were completely one dimensional.
If all you're looking for is a few sex scenes and a light, smut-filled beach read you may want this book. However, if your IQ is over 55, try something better written.
If you want a heart wrenching historical romance, try OUTLANDER by Diana Gabaldon. Do not waste your money on this book if you want any sort of plot and dymanic characters. I'm suprised I even got through the entire book.

Diamond in the Rough was sooooooo good! I didn't stop reading it from the time I first opened it. It was that good. Diamond grew up rough. Her father abused her and her mother. Once Diamond's father goes to jail, they finally make their escape. Now Diamond is grown and taking care of her and her mother. This book tells about Diamond growing up in the streets of Brooklyn; trying to make it. Please believe me you need to read this book; it was truly excellent from start to finish! I can't wait to read more from this author.

Lew Freedman wrote one of the better books in baseball history as he traces the history of Alaskan baseball (bush league in its finest form) from the territorial days to the turn of the century. What make this book so interesting is that it also spotlights on many of the players who used to played in Alaska during its short summer seasons who later on became big time Major League players like Mark McGwire, Dave Kingman and Randy Johnson. But overall, the main focus of the book remains on baseball in Alaska, the history of the teams, players and coaches along with some of it more eccentric fans. It may be that some of the players we see in Anchorage today during the summer season, may be a future Hall of Famer.
The book comes highly recommended for anyone interested in baseball history or enjoyed baseball in general.

Will inspire you to grow tomatoes.......2007-06-13
I received this book as a gift, after my small 4-plant tomato plot fared disastrously last summer. 1 of the 4 plants produced decent tomatoes, while the rest died unceremoniously. This year, following the recommendations in this book, my 4 plants are all doing great, and I already have little tomatoes-to-be on 3 of the 4. For that reason alone I would recommend this book. I wish some of the planting and tending suggestions were a little clearer; you have to piece some of them together for yourself. Nevertheless, just two of the express recommendations on their own have made a world of difference for me.
The photographs and descriptions of the different heirloom varieties are fantastic, and will inspire you to pick out some different and unusual tomatoes for your garden. You don't have to be a tomato fanatic to enjoy and learn from this book.

After reading Miss Emily Whites "editorial" comments...it would seem that "snob" is a term that Miss White throws about because of close association with the same.

100 is not enough!.......2005-09-12
This is a great book. I especially love the pictures with cross-sections of each tomato so you can see the meatiness before you buy. I also appriciate that the taste of each one is described in detail. My only complaint is that a lot of great tomatoes are missing from this book. I hope the next volume has about 500 varieties to truley reflect the unique color, taste and shape variations in heirloom tomatoes.

A history of histories.......2005-07-14
Stanley Morison is always a pleasure to read. He had enormous influence on twentieth centry type founding, and an encyclopedic knowledge of the history of type. It's a fascinating subject, partly because type design, more than just about any other art, is vividly aware of its own past, and is inextricably bound up with commerce.
Up to about p.38, this book keeps the promise of its title, the search for a "scientific" classification system (a teeth-gritting misuse of the word). It discusses the history of letter forms as they appeared in cast type. The second essay also discusses one strand in the tapestry of calligraphy's history.
After that point, however, Morison seems to switch gears. Gradually at first, he mentions earlier commentators on typography. By the end of the first essay, the topic is wholly the history of such commentaries, making this a history of typographic histories. It's a great starting point for someone about to embark on an academic study, but of limited use to the practicing typographer.
It's brief, though, and still interesting to any reader wanting to know more about the typography's history. It just doesn't say a lot about the letter forms themselves.
