Excellent read!.......2005-06-28
My brother bought this book for me and I am so glad he did! This was my first book by Jan Burke and it won't be my last. This book was a great introduction to the Irene Kelly series and after reading it, I am tempted to go out and purchase all of the others in this series. I finished this book in less than a day. After beginning it, I couldn't put it down! It was full of page-turning mystery with a touch of romance...my kind of book. Read it!
A Superb Debut Mystery - Irene Is A 21st Century Lois Lane!.......2005-03-20
Irene Kelly, the woman referred to in Jan Burke's "Goodnight Irene," is a veteran reporter for the News Express, in the fictional Southern California town of Las Piernas. She is presently working for a public relations firm, however, after having quit her job at the newspaper. Kelly made the temporary career change as a result of an argument concerning professional ethics with the publication's very unprofessional editor-in-chief. Then Conn O'Conner, Irene's beloved best friend, and longtime mentor at the Express, is brutally murdered. The only clue Irene can come up with is O'Connor's obsession with a long-unsolved homicide and an unidentified female body discovered in Las Piernas 35 years before. The corpse's face had been destroyed, and her hands and feet cut off so that her identity could not be established. The police dubbed her Hannah and tried for years to solve the case, to no avail. Newspaperman O'Connor wrote the original stories back then and had never given up on finding the identity of this Jane Doe. Every year, on the anniversary of her murder, he wrote his famous "Hannah" column, usually targeting more recently disappeared people.
Homicide cop Frank Harriman, Irene's love interest from years before, is working on the O'Conner case, and asks Irene to get her job back at the Express in order to take over her former mentor's assignments. The rationale is that she might be able to find information useful to the investigation while continuing the dead man's work. In O'Conner's confidential files, she discovers a maze of forensic records that suggest a motive far more sinister than anyone imagined for the newspaperman's violent death, the unidentified woman's murder, and more recently, three horrific and separate attacks on Irene's, Frank's and O'Conner's son's lives. The unknown killer will obviously resort to anything to prevent past secrets from coming to light. And Irene and Frank develop a closer relationship as they work together to find the murderer(s).
I had never read an Irene Kelly mystery until last month when I picked-up "Bloodlines," the most recent book in the series. As that extraordinary suspense thriller goes back in time to Irene's initial days as a reporter, and tells the tale of her burgeoning relationship with Conn O'Conner, I was fortunate to read it before beginning "Goodnight, Irene." Jan Burke has written a wonderful series of mysteries, which are more than just good sleuth novels. She creates characters who are three-dimensional and grow as the series progresses. Her people are both sympathetic and flawed, and Irene Kelly, a combination of Lois Lane, Nancy Drew, with just a touch of Katherine Hepburn, makes a memorable heroine. Unfortunately, one of her flaws is stubbornness which borders on the extreme. As intelligent as she is, she frequently acts on impulse and winds up doing what she has been specifically told not to do, often with life- threatening results. Ms. Burke has surrounded Irene with a number of interesting and memorable friends and family members, characters who add to the depth and richness of the novels.
Overall, this is a well-paced debut mystery, filled with enough twists and turns to keep the reader riveted. I plan to read book two, "Sweet Dreams, Irene" ASAP!

Medium boiled crime novel with much to praise.......2004-03-20
This is a very proficient debut novel in what has gone on to become an established series about Californian newspaperwoman Irene Kelly.
The book has -quite literally -an explosive start ,when Irene's friend and mentor the veteran journalist O'Connor is blown to pieces by a parcel bomb .Soon afterwards she herself is shot at in her own home and her former brother in law Kenny ,a resident in O'Connor's home is savagely beaten up and hospitalised .
She begins digging into O'Connor's recent cases and one turns out to be the key to events -an unsolved "Jane Doe " murder from 30 years previously about which O,Connor had repeatedly written . He was getting close to revealing both the identity of the murdered girl and in the process uncovering facts which several prominemt local politcal and social figures would rather leave in obscurity .
By continuing where O,Connor left off Irene is placing herself and others in harm's way -and the body count is by no means over
with Irene the target of two attempted murders before the case is wrapped up
Along the way she re-ignites a previous relationship with the detective in charge of the case and finds time to act as matchmaker to her oldest friend as well as getting closer to her sister
The book is moderately violent but not in lip smackingly gloating way and it occups the mid ground betwen cosy and hard boiled styles .
Good start to a series I will explore more deeply
Gonna read them all now!.......2003-07-02
I read NINE because Amazon recommended it. I liked it so much that I thought I'd give the Irene Kelly series a try and I enjoyed the first one. I imagine her writing gets better (it did in NINE) - this story is a little dated (they use pay phones not cell phones, use the term "yuppies" - stuff like that). I am going to read the next in the series - I found the main characters real and likeable.
Worth reading - not overly impressed.......2003-03-15
This book was definately worth the time and money it took to read it, but I was not overly impressed. I have been worn out on all the typical mysteries - so I thought I would spend some time getting to know Irene. I did like the character and plan to read the next books in the series. Irene was well rounded and well written. If you're bored and need a new start - try this series out. It was enjoyable - just not breathtaking.

Customer Reviews:
Smart Send-Up of Romance Comics.......2007-07-24
You might recognize Carol Lay from her strip WayLay in alternative weeklies, but this longer story is even better. The first Irene stories appeared in her comic Good Girls in the 1980s, but she wrote the last installment for this volume. You can see her art and storytelling style change a lot over the course of the book, but somehow that makes it even more charming. The premise, that of a white woman with an African-style lip disk looking for love among men who consider her a freak, is intentionally silly, but as a modern fable, it's sweet and funny.
As a parody of 1950s romance comics and an incisive criticism of superficial ideals of beauty, the Irene stories far exceed anything else in the indie comics scene recently. There aren't enough comics out there that appeal to an adult female audience, I only wish there were more like this.

Dance Imagery for Technique and Performance

Book Description
Destined to become a classic text and reference, Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery shows you how to use imaging techniques to improve posture and alignment and release excess tension. The book's 195 illustrations will help you visualize the images and exercises and show you how to use them in a variety of contexts.
Part I of Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery discusses the origins and uses of imagery and includes 36 exercises that demonstrate dynamic alignment in practice. You'll explore the importance of posture and dynamic alignment and discover how to use imagery to affect body movement.
Part II explains the biomechanical and anatomical principles behind complex imagery and illustrates 52 exercises to bring these principles to life. You'll learn how to use basic physics to create a strong yet fluid balance in your muscles and joints.
Part III provides 250 anatomical imagery exercises to help you fine-tune alignments and increase body awareness. The exercises focus on different regions of the body--the pelvis, hips, knees, lower legs, spine, shoulders, arms, hands, head, and neck--as well as on breathing. You can select specific images to address individual needs or follow the sequence presented in the book.
And Part IV provides 23 holistic exercises to sculpt and improve alignment in various positions--standing, supine, and sitting. These exercises will help you establish a body image that facilitates dynamic alignment and releases excess tension.
By practicing the techniques described in Dynamic Alignment Through Imagery, you'll tap into the power of imagery and create better movement.
Customer Reviews:
A dancers must have!.......2007-08-21
I find that all of Eric Franklin's book are invaluable for anyone interested with body movement.
Dancers, fitness instructors and even therapists have much to gain by the use of imagery.
Forget the Aspirin, Take a Franklin Instead and Call Me in the Morning.......2006-12-27
The body is an amazing thing. We look at architecture and don't see a simularity in it with us, yet just as beams and walls and cielings support buildings, bones, ligaments and skin support what we inhabit and live in. Just as a building's foundation and subsequent floors affect how it stands and reacts in an earthquake or wind storm, how we walk, position our pelvises, carry our shoulders and necks and arms affects how we react to our environment and as this book emphasizes-- gravity.
DATI brings together everything wonderful about our bodies. Gravity isn't good or bad, it just is and we need to learn to deal with it. DATI is one of the best books on getting to know your muscles. If you don't know why they or even if they do and where they are, you can't work with them. Franklins visualization is second to none as far as helping the reader gain feeling through imagining water or air finning up an area and then letting it all out. He takes what we can relate to, describes it in another area, and moves us through to places that we didn't have names for.
Franklin has a sense of humor. (Humor is imporatant because it establishes a sence of the irony in looking at life.) He tells the reader of a commedian who went to basic training. After a week, his stomach started to feel funny. He went to many doctors, convinced that something was dreadfully wrong only to discover that for the first time in his life that he was not suffering from heartburn! This is important because in changing our bodies, when we change soemthing that is bad, it might not feel right.
I highly reccommend this book especially for GYN patients. Doctors who aren't trained in body movement will not understand how to guide their patients into understanding. I've had nine children and was getting revolted by what I felt like I had no control over. Since I am a yoga practicer, I decided to see what I could do before an operation and this is turning out to be a great investment. I think the best thing is that I have gotten control over muscles that are attached to bones that are attached to connective tissue that work with inner organs that were once loose. I am not afraid to sneeze any more or of watching nurses react with paste faces to what I tell them. This book has helped me get more acquainted with my body so I am able to discuss it. It's very hard to go in to a doctor's office, see a nurse that you've never seen before and start discussing problems that you never thought you'd have to deal with. When you know your body, you can speak with confidence about it. (In my case, the problem is in the process of being fixed.)
I highly suggest that OB/Gyns/urologists and family practitioners at least read this book. Without an understanding of how the body's muscles are used, doctors don't help us unless they are cutting in to us. I almost had an operation based on one doctor's response to my sagging organs with, "OK, I can operate on that." The man is nothing but a body mechanic-- he doesn't understand how our bodies work-- just that when they don't that he can fix them through an operation, and isn't aware of what a patient can do to help her-or-himself, yet he is one of the alleged finest in our state. He's really not that great-- he's like a musician that can only play one style of music with one instrument. If he was ever inspired, he's lost it. I am not slamming him; this is the case with many, many doctors. (This is the case with anyone who has done the same thing for too long and not realized that how little they know.)
I urge patients to learn from books like this and learn to ask questions and help yourselves. Doctors are slaves of convention and the latest word from the AMA. I am not against operations to fix what doesn't work, but the ramifications of an operation can be bad-- for what my doctor was proposing, I would have never been able to do certain stretches and bends in yoga. Give your self six weeks to try Franklin's approach and fix your problem and if it doesn't work, get operated on. I will warn anyone doing this that if you don't have a background in body movement, ie; yoga, dance, some type of athletics, it will take longer to get results. Our body awareness starts on the outside and works inward, and you will have a new vocabulary to get familiar with.
Imagery is hard. You have to know how to focus. I highly suggest that you try yoga. I learned to empty my mind in a Hatha Yoga class and learned to chant because it kept my mind on my body position and my breath. I am a highly amped person and need this-- others may be able to do it more easilly. If you have never worked out before, I think that you will get better results from this book if you take at least a short class in something so that you can get used to how your body works. You may also benefit from Uta Hagen's Respect for Acting where she teaches acting using the entire body. Acting isn't about --I strike a dramatic pose here-- it's about how one REacts to the environment and this creates what you are phsyically.
Indispensable for any type of dancer .......2006-11-04
I found this book to be eye opening, and immensely helpful with all the exercises that are discussed in the chapters. I improved my dancing within two weeks of reading and starting the exercises. It's concise with a nice touch of humor. I'm recommending this book to all my dancer friends both social and professional. I love this book and I have plans to purchase all of Eric Franklin's books.
The world needs more of this.......2006-08-06
I work in the fitness industry as well as dance. I see how important dynamic alignment is to do ANYTHING in dance and I think the general population needs a deeper understanding of it. I struggle with my balance and this book has been a wonderful tool to help me improve my technique.
Dynamite!.......2006-07-12
This is a really good resource for alternate approaches to body alignment and integrative structure. A different approach with much promise. Worth the read!

Customer Reviews:
A cookbook far beyond the norm.......2005-08-12
It's called "a gardening book for cooks and a cookbook for gardeners." David Hirsch has updated and revised this different and terrific cookbook. The subtitle ("Creative Gardening for the Adventurous Cook"), encapsulates quite nicely why this is a cookbook far beyond the norm. Written specifically to help in growing vegetables so that we can cook with them, each flower, herb or vegetable is accompanied by tips for its best use in the kitchen.
Published originally in 1992, the 2004 update includes more information, resources and recipes. The text is simple yet thorough, and is chock-full of tips, ideas, illustrations and charming anecdotes. In simple, straightforward text, Hirsch gives instructions for growing, harvesting, and cooking with over 75 vegetables and herbs.
The cookbook is accessible for beginners, while being complex and satisfying enough for more experienced gardeners. Chapters are devoted to gardening techniques, crop rotation, seed starting, and natural ways to defend against insects. Another chapter covers various kinds of gardens, from hillside, to walled patio, to container gardening, while the 70+ recipes will showcase the fruits of your labor and help transform them to the the pleasures of the table.
The recipes are delicious and comprehensive, from soups, dips and salads to appetizers and main dishes. Hirsch also includes information on cooking times and techniques, as well as the effective use of herbs (with advice for planting, compatibility and cooking). It is hard to pick favorites, but the Vegetable "Pasta", Summer Rolls, and Portuguese Kale Soup are among my favorites so far.
The recipes are not all vegan (although of course they are vegetarian), but vegan options can be substituted (soy cheese for non-soy, etc). A must have cookbook for gardeners and cooks alike.--By Lisa Steele
If you love the Moosewood cookbooks, you'll love this book........1998-04-18
This is an easy-to-use and easy to read book with helpful tips on not only selecting and growing, but cooking with your veggies, edible flowers and herbs. There is also a great list of mail-order sources with descriptions of supplies. I especially liked the design section for its simple and straightforward approach to considerations and approaches towards my garden layout.

Since the very first issue of Country Living Gardener, writer, artist and naturalist Sharon Lovejoy has created the award-winning “Heart’s Ease” column for the magazine. Through this collection of delightful essays and beautiful illustrations, she shares with her readers the boundless joys of a country garden. Lovejoy has chosen to focus on animal life in the garden, including hummingbirds, caterpillars, and dragonflies, but her informative and witty prose also covers traditional plant care. The very titles of her sketches convey pleasure in the vibrant country landscape and the life that teems within it: “The Bumble Bee Rumba,” “Faeries in the Fuschias (sphinx moths),” “Holiday Feasts for the Birds and the Beasts,” and “Conversations with Sunflowers.” This compilation truly is—to borrow another of her titles—“Something to Crow About.”

used as reference all the time.......2001-05-19
Mastering along with InDesign Bible are both excellent as reference books to explain nuances and subtleties of indesign. Altho in both of them I would wish for more thorough index term listings, the content is eventually findable and sufficiently explained.
Needs to upgrade.......2000-07-08
Unfortunately, this book does me no good because it just covers version 1.0, and 1.5 has been released with many changes. It's also frustrating to see almost all the dialog box snapshots in Windows format, considering Adobe has discovered it's customer base is mostly made up of Macintosh users.
Best InDesign help yet.......2000-01-19
I work for a company that uses InDesign as a graphic engine for publishing software. In order to come up to speed on the program I read through a few other titles (InD..Classroom in a book, ..for dummies) before landing on this text another employee purchased. It steps you through the entire app from simple functions to the complex in their own sections. This allows the reader to not feel insulted by having to wade through a 5-page diatribe on "save as.." unless you need it. The advanced sections even brought some new concepts to the table that were not mentioned in the Adobe Manual, or glossed over at best. As an instructor of how to use InDesign, I now recommend this text to students who need additional outside resources for their own work --nice job!
Book Description
Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production shows how experienced professionals with deadlines and billable hours use InDesign efficiently and effectively. Through the case studies and interviews, readers will find inspired to look beyond the over-emphasized basic features and into the depths of InDesign's utility for real-world print design.
Most InDesign books are written for beginners, and experienced users are frustrated by them. When you already know how to make, fill, and thread a text box, the entire first half of most InDesign books is useless. But this one doesn't dwell on the basics. Mastering InDesign for Print Design and Production fulfills the promise of the Mastering series, to provide real-world skills to professionals and students. Like all Mastering books, this one includes:
- A "by pros for pros" approach: The author is an active professional working in the field of graphic arts, layout, and design, writing for professionals who want to improve their skills or learn new skills.
- Real-world examples: Running throughout the text are examples of how the various skills are applied in real scenarios, described throughout the book in the form of examples and case studies from the author's own design and consulting work, as well as interviews with other designers using InDesign on the job.
- Skill-based teaching and hands-on exercises
Although the book has a comprehensive glossary, page one begins right away speaking to the core market—print professionals—in industry terms about industry challenges. This immediately lets experienced InDesign users know the book is about them. The approach is humorous, making the digestion and retention of complicated information easier for the reader through quips, anecdotes, and design- and print-geek humor. But at all times the book is true to its mission: Helping a professional do their job in InDesign without frustration, confusion, or aesthetic compromise.
