Book Description
Archaeologist Emma Fielding encounters murder and mystery on the site of an old English Abbey in this second Ⱪp–snorting good mystery➨Aaron Elkins) written by a real–life archaeologist.
Archaeologist Emma Fielding is beginning to doubt the wisdom of spending her summer vacation in England helping friends excavate a 12th–century abbey, especially after they uncover an all–too modern skeleton in the nearby medieval graveyard. But it's the second discovery––of a murdered graduate student recently missing from the dig––that suggests to Emma that Marchester isn't exactly the quiet riverside town in appears to be. And when a member of the town's neopagan community shows up, claiming that the site is a sacred spot for Wiccans, Emma knows that conflicting interests and intentions may have driven someone to murder. There are dark passions and lethal secrets buried here, heinous crimes that shake the conflicted community to its core, and it's up to Emma, an outsider far from home, to delve into a past that too many people––including her friends––would do anything to hide.

Grave Consequences.......2006-02-11
This book was funny, scary, and interesting all at the same time. The main character, Timothy Murphy, gets scared easily and you can guess his reaction when he sees his own gravestone. I think that this book is one of the best I have ever read.It was easily understood. I would recommend it to boys and some girls of 8-12.
Once promising..........2005-01-05
I have a mixed reaction. The setting of English town and speech, and Prof. Emma Fielding's archaeological project in a medieval graveyard, are both excellently rendered. This has the best representation of field work I've ever seen in a novel, better even than Elkins or Connor. Occasionally the text sparkles with wit: [a scheming archaeologist has] "more machinations than a Detroit assembly line, more plots than a graveyard." However, this story is miscategorized as a mystery, dashing my eager anticipation. IMO it is, rather, an intense novel of emotionally saturated personal relationships, on the fringe of Romance novels. It has a very high talk:event ratio.
The mystery is entirely encapsulated in the cover blurb (a misplaced body and a missing student), and, incredibly, nothing further develops in the first 243 pages (and then Emma grossly mishandles the new evidence). The plot is odd, for it is nearly static. This book is not for someone seeking an EZ read, suspense, action, violence, puzzles, clues, deduction, misdirection, archaeology, plot development, romance, sex, terror, or horror. None of that develops in the course of Emma's many long discussions, and few outward events. Emma, and her author, utterly ignore the police. This book is for oppressive psychological tension, spot-on English invective, feminism, acute observation, and a structure I think is derived from Romance novels (or perhaps the author's deconstructionist colleagues in academe). Emma is a self-confessed "confused" heroine who is short on humor, deductive skills, and solid motivation, but long on intense introspection, heart-to-heart talks, and fearful second thoughts (the source of most feelings of "menace" here). The English are reticent to join in the personal talk. Emma eventually wonders, after prying into the lives of many rather unpleasant people, "why was I getting myself involved in this." I wondered, too, for I did not find her an empathetic heroine, let alone the other characters, and Cameron wasn't making efforts to keep my interest in this slow moving story. Emma merely has a "need" to pry into her friends' affairs, in both senses of the word. There's no final resolution, since Emma's vacation ends before the case is closed! Maybe all this is realistic of unsatisfactory relationships and episodes in ongoing lives. Some might think it cathartic; I found it overwrought and gravely glum.
This is the SECOND book in the series, without SITE UNSEEN there are several fractured (incomplete) relationships in this story, especially with the males. Here, their role in Emma's life is to make opportunistically reassuring phone calls from overseas. I was hugely disappointed.
A pleasant but unfocused mystery.......2003-09-04
Cameron's main character, Emma Fielding, is an archaeologist who is invited to England for a dig. As the story develops, three sets of remains are uncovered: a saintly woman from medieval times, a man from more recent years, and a graduate student who had been working on the dig. Fielding pokes her nose into these mysteries, encountering contemporary Wiccans (witches) and other local characters. She also gets involved in the marital problems of her hosts. Those interested in field archaeology may enjoy the descriptions of a dig in progress. While the author's writing style is easy and pleasant to read, the mystery elements are not well focused. The ending is anticlimactic.
Quick to Draw You In and Won't Let Go Until the End.......2003-01-08
I really enjoyed this second book in the Emma Fielding series. Emma was first introduced in Site Unseen, also by Dana Cameron. What I like about Emma is that she is real, with quirks and insecurities and she is also very cool. Dana does a great job making Emma come alive. The other characters in this story also came alive for me. This book was quick to draw me in and it kept me wondering what would happen next. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good story.
Emma Fielding's working vacation is not as planned.......2002-12-30
Emma Fielding is in England helping an acquaintance with a dig a an old abbey. One of the students is missing. A fairly modern skeleton is found on the site. There are other tensions among her friends and the general community. A coven of Wiccans is interested in the site, and there's no good coffee for miles. Emma Fielding is seriously doubting her judgement in helping her new friend Jane and her husband on this dig. When the missing student is found murdered, Jane is a suspect and Emma feels that she should help solve the crime as well as find the body of a supposed saint buried on the site.
This is a typical and entertaining Emma Fielding mystery. The characters are very real and so are their interactions and problems. The murderer is somewhat difficult to identify, but it all comes together in the end. I would have liked to have seen more of Pooter and his buddies, they were more entertaining than Emma's hosts, but maybe they'll show up in another novel.

Harpy High.......2001-11-04
We purchased this book for our teenage son in an airport on a trip to Aruba. By Aruba we all three had read it! It is fast moving, enough plot to keep an adult reader entertained, but most of all it was hillarous. Enjoy
If Only My High School Had Been Like This!.......2000-12-02
Continuing the story begun in Esther Friesner's _Gnome Man's Land_, _Harpy High_ is another twisted, warped, and thoroughly comic treat for the lover of humorous fantasy. Timothy Desmond is back with a new cast of characters as well as our old favorites, set to battle Baba--pardon, *Bambi*--Yaga for the sake of all humanity. Oh, and to keep her from producing her own line of fitness videos, too.
It's possible to view these books as simple (if delightful) brain candy, but they're really much more than that: _Harpy High_ is educational in the sense that it can introduce the reader to several figures out of myth and literature; sure, Friesner's take on them might be a bit... unusual, but there's something to be said for a story that whets the curiousity. Further, there's a valuable lesson to be learned from every book in this series--and this one is no exception.
In short, Esther Friesner has concocted a bizarre and wonderful mix of comedy, myth, and meaning in this book and its fellow trilogy-members, _Gnome Man's Land_ and _Unicorn U._ All three are most definitely worth reading--and buying--if you can find them.

MORTAL BEGINNER BEWARE!.......2007-09-13
Nowhere on the book's cover or in its description will you find the disclaimer, "We suggest that you run or walk on a regular basis - and by that we mean getting out and moving at least 30 minutes, three times a week - for at least a year before embarking on any long-distance training program" until you get to the third paragraph of Chapter Five. Even in the beginning of the book, page 3 to be exact, you read, "So you've never run a step before in your life? No problem. One of our plans will work for you." Hmm, doesn't quite compute, does it? In the introduction to the book, they say they have a program if you're an absolute beginner, then five chapters later tell you they want you to have a foundation of fitness for a year before starting one of their programs. Huh?
This is misleading and obviously disheartening for the never-ran-a-step-in-your-life absolute beginner that goes out and buys this book. Even if you've been running for six months, you're apparently not ready yet. "Not a problem," you say, as you then try to find that year-long foundational training program in the book. Guess what? It doesn't exist. There are eight programs, mind you, but the authors would like you to have that year under your belt before starting any of them. Sound advice, for sure, but something you won't find out until you plunk down the money for this book (or take my comment to heart and not buy it...yet).
So, if you make the mistake of buying this book and you're an absolute beginner, put it back on your bookshelf, pick up an actual beginning runner's book (I recommend The Runner's Handbook : The Bestselling Classic Fitness Guide for Beginning and Intermediate Runners (2nd rev Edition)), follow its programs for a year, then follow its marathon program or dust the cover of your Marathoning for Mortals book and start one of its 3 - 6 month long half-marathon or full marathon programs. The rest of the book is good, but I've got to give it only two stars for this horrible misrepresentation.
Sound advice for people of all levels.......2007-07-27
A friend recommended this book to me and I am thrilled I took her advice and read it. For a novice marathoner like me, it is packed full of must-know details and provided me with great insight into training for and running/walking a marathon. At the time I purchased the book I was a newly reformed couch potato all set to walk my first marathon but now I've decided to allow myself ample training time. Still determined to venture into the marathoning world, thanks to this book I'll go there full of knowledge to keep me healthy and walking for years to come.
Marathoning for Mortals.......2007-06-14
Great book! It got me through my first marathon.
I love this book!.......2007-04-19
I have never considered myself a runner but after receiving this book as a gift, I decided to begin to train for a half-marathon. The information provided in this book is very clear and very practical for a beginning runner. I wasn't overwhelmed by the vocabulary, my 'novice' questions were answered thoroughly, and the training schedule was totally doable. I was a little worried before my first half-marathon because I thought that training for it would be 24/7, but I found that this book allowed me to train smart ... I was prepared physically and mentally (and had no injuries along the way). This book is wonderful!
Great book for first-, second-, third-time marathoners!.......2007-03-01
Having trained with Team In Training before, and doing it again this year, I decided to pick this gem up to supplement the training I was getting with TNT. I'm glad I read this book. It both solidifies what I thought I knew about smart training, and helps clarify many of the emotional issues that go into preparing for and completing a 26.2 mile journey.
I've recommended it to others. Well done!

the real thing.......2007-09-27
I bought this book about four years ago. Please note that I am a Grandmother who has been told that I could 'burn'! After purchasing this book, I have changed my personal recipes for the ones in the book.
I have also purchased more as gifts for my friends and especially my family...my Daughters and Granddaughter included. I also enjoy the historical facts and pictures. My Grandson made his first macaroni & cheese by following the recipe.
IT'S A WINNER!!
I love this cookbook.......2007-07-28
I purchased this book year ago. I'm kind of a beginner when it comes to cooking from scratch. I purchased this book because I wanted to learn how to cook a variety of southern foods for my fiance who is originally from Mississippi and loves home cooked meals.I've cooked a lot of the recipes in this book and they have all turned out delicious.I would encourage any one who is trying to learn to prepare soul food like your grandmother to invest in this cookbook. You won't be sorry.
Excellent .......2007-05-26
I received the book in just a few days. It was all that I'd expected and more. Excellent!
Great Enjoyment!.......2007-01-11
I enjoyed reading and looking at the pictures of yester years gone by. It was great remembering the good ole days and the fun times when we gathered together with family and friends.
A great source of southern recipes.......2006-05-25
While visiting with an elderly lady, I mentioned that my great grandmother went to Tuskegee Institute. She showed me this cookbook. I had to have one of my own. I think this book is excellent for those who want to learn how to cook those southern dishes that "grandma" or "aunt so-and-so" used to make.
Although I am a pretty good southern cook, some of the dishes I had forgotten about. I think the most impressive recipe was "Pokeweed". I know it as "poke salad", but I instantly recognized it. I have never cooked it personally, but years ago I had thought about cooking it many times. At the time I did not know you had to boil it and disgard the water because it has toxins in it. If I had made it years ago before I knew better, I would have been sick. To me, the addition of that one recipe seemed to put it in a category the covers "ALL" types of southern cuisine.
I ordered mine today, and I can't wait to read it from cover to cover. I spent over an hour reading my friends book. I ordered one for my mother also.
The real clincher for me was the fact that my great grandmother went there. She graduated in 1917. I searched those photos, and wondered if one of those girls was her. I felt such a bond to that book. I brought back all the memories of her stories of Dr. Carver and the peanuts. In one of her many stories, she told me that she didn't realized at the time that history was being made, and that they were more interested in eating the peanuts than learning how to make perfume from them.
This book would be an excellent wedding gift for a young couple. Or even those that find themselves trying to prepare "family holiday" meals for the first time. It brings back memories!!!
Book Description
This inspiring, humrous, and touching book celebrates the beneficial effects that animals have on humans and describes how their therapeutic potential is being increasingly acknowledged by the medical community. Animal Assisted Therapy, an important new development in health care, has already shown that people are statistically less likely to suffer an early heart attack if they have a pet, and that stroking an animal reduces a person's stress level. This is only the top of the iceberg, says Bernie Graham. Animal Assisted Therapy is now achieving amazing results in treating children with physical and mental disabilities by using trained dolphins in aquatic therapy. There are also programs that teach dogs to help the disabled with their daily chores. Horses, cats, dogs, and even more exotic animals are being used to offer support and bring hope to individuals, thereby enhancing human efforts. Written with warmth and compassion, Creature Comfort looks at all aspects of Animal Assisted Therapy, including the theories behind it, to provide both a practical guide and a moving account of the many rewarding human-animal interactions.

How our relationships with animals can benefit our health........2000-03-26
This book provided me with the perfect introduction to a fascinating subject. Bernie Graham writes in a chatty, accessible style, while at the same time getting across to the reader a great deal of well-sourced information.
The book uses plenty of real-life examples to illustrate how animals can help human beings cope with illness. As I work in the Mental-Health field I was particularly struck by the opening example of a young dog's part in improvement of the health of a man suffering from depression. It rang some very familiar bells, and it was good to have some of the scientific background explained concisely and in a refreshingly jargon-free manner.
Mr Graham has a clear empathy for both patients and animals, as well as a considered and reasonable approach. This is not a book that says 'get a cat and you'll be cured', but one which studies the part animals can play alongside more conventional treatments. For me, this means that the book takes you on a journey rather than tries to win you over, and is all the more convincing for it.
In places it reminded me of some of Oliver Sacks' books with all its keen observations and attention to detail, combined with its very human, life-affirming qualities. There's some good jokes, too.
The book didn't leave me feeling like an expert, but then it didn't try to. Rather it gave me a taste of the whole intruiging topic, and left me wanting to know and learn more. It was helpful, then, to find plenty of further resources and contacts listed at the end of the book.
In all, the perfect introduction to Animal Assisted Therapy, and ideal for anyone interested in animals and our relationships with them.

Amazongly informative resource jam-packed w/ critical info.......2004-12-29
This book focussing on a period of time which the authors state is known at America's First Great Depression, is one of the most well-constructed and well-thought out numismatic books I own. It has loads of great photos (1000) accompanied by important information (relative rarity, size, metal, production year, 2000-01 auction results where applicable, and fascinating commentary that helps to identify or place the token in the genre). According to the authors in their rather opaque and fuzzy introduction, these Hard Times Tokens took the place of circulating change because of a shortage resulting from the peculiar Jacksonian economic politics of the time (including the fight over a Federal banking system). Hence their artwork and slogans often trenchantly reflected the contemporary politics prevailing (either in the form of satire or pure political sentiment). In recognition of this, the authors dedicate an entire section of this book to the Satirical Hard Times Token genre, in addition to cataloguing the token issues along individual State lines. Additionally, there are sections concerning Hard Times related Ephemera/Paraphernalia/Notes, so-called 'Store Cards,' and even Slave Tags. The appendices contain information on the ever-expanding numbering system; an examination of the methodology used for identifying coin states and iterations; discussions on token designers and producers; and wonderful photographic blow-ups as examples. As I said, this reference is jam packed with essential information. As such, I highly recommend this book to seasoned collector and novice alike. It rates 4 stars only because, for the price, it should be hardbound. A new stand alone edition of this text has been released approximately every 5 years so this 9th Edition should remain current until the next prospective update in the year 2006/7.

Comprehensive guide for all but one known Hard Times Tokens........1998-09-26
If you are a Hard Times Token enthusiast or simply wish to find more about your own token like me, this is the Bible. It is an easy to read guide with quality photos of coins that are roughly life size. Throughout the book one can find references to many experts in the field of Hard Times Tokens. However, I can find no suggestions in the book as to where those of us go from here when we find that our own Hard Time Token is not included. Perhaps I can find some of the experts through the internet?

Book Description
Incorporating movement in the landscape is one of the hot trends in gardening today. As people invest more time and money in their homes, landscaping a primary focus. How can we make the outdoors more inviting? Paths, steps, and footbridges are three key elements that help define a landscape and how people move through it and enjoy it. An inviting path that meanders through a garden, steps that connect terraced outdoor "living rooms," and a footbridge that spans a small stream each serves a utilitarian purpose, but when designed creatively and well can infuse a property with an irresistible sense of wonder and delight.
In How to Build Paths, Steps & Footbridges, builder Peter Jeswald explains how to add practical and visually pleasing elements to any property. He advocates choices that complement, rather than dominate, the home and landscape and recommends natural and manmade materials appropriate for the goals and objectives of each project. Wood, masonry, stone, earth, and vegetation are all options he discusses for building and creating an environment that complements the topography.
Filled with color photographs, How to Build Paths, Steps & Footbridges also includes hundreds of clear instructional drawings of plans and construction techniques. Jeswald provides careful advice for every stage of a project--up-front planning, assessing a site, finalizing a design, and selecting proper tools and building materials for construction--all with the goal of providing a strong theoretical basis that will allow readers to achieve the best possible result: greater access to and interest in their outdoor spaces.

Paths Steps and Footbridges.......2005-07-11
A "fresh", well conceptualized and practical book that deals effectively and quite thoroughly with one of the two strategic components of any landscape --- the movement space. The other being landing or gathering space. The book is well illustrated and profusely augmented with simple clear diagrams. It benefits from a strong outline and simultaneous information on how to build paths, steps and footbridges It offers practical implementation tips. Stunning even inspiritational photographs complement the diagramatic graphics. A very good book for the "do it yourselfer" who could benefit from wisdom of those who have constructed well.
A Landscape Architects View.......2005-03-30
Outstanding selection of photos defining numerous material selections and their designed use.
Paramount to the process is Peter's description of the planning and design process. Easy to follow, thorough, and it leads the amature and professional through the inital idea(s) to a well defined project - bricks and mortar.
The step by step direction tool(s), material(s) and know how should result in a successful project for friends and family to enjoy and rave about. Just look at the pictures. HUNGER!!!
A wonderful book for young and old, amature and professional.

Book Description
This book chronicles the story of a group of individuals caught at a crossroads and targeted in the cross fires of history. In 1933 events in their native Germanic lands presented them with a "Hobson's choice"-leave if you can or die! Their lives were saved because Turkey was discarding the society and culture inherited from the Ottomans' derelict and shattered empire while recognizing and addressing the need to modernize its society, culture, way of living, and system of higher education. Using a collection of third-party archival documents, cotemporaneous family and collegial correspondence, memoirs, oral histories, photos, and other surviving evidence Arnold Reisman documents the fears, the courage, the heartaches, and the determination of these brilliant people as well as their contributions to shifting established paradigms in several fields of knowledge. He also speculates about Turkey's inabilities to fully capitalize on these emigres' legacy. The book is intended for lay readers interested in history of the 20th Century, history of science, history of Turkey, the Holocaust, and in a case study of post-Islamic national development. "This book adds to our knowledge of an important aspect of the Holocaust, and of the behavior of Nation States in the modern world of woe and grief." - Sir Martin Gilbert, Winston Churchill's official biographer and a leading historian of the modern world. He is the author of The Holocaust: A History of the Jews of Europe During the Second World War. "This book should be on the 'must-read' list of books about World War II and the years preceding it." - Dr. Israel Hanukoglu, Former Science Adviser to the Prime Minister of Israel. Currently Professor and Chairman of the Department of Molecular Biology, College of Judea and Samaria, Ariel, Israel. "This book involves five major topics: science, history, politics, economics, and the arts. It is the earliest comprehensive essay in the English language, on the German émigrés who, while taking refuge in Turkey after 1933, contributed to the modernization of its higher education, and to the implementation of research activities and social reforms." - Prof. Dr. Feza Günergun, Chair for History of Science, Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University, Beyazit-Istanbul, Turkey.

In depth information about a little known topic.......2007-02-02
This book is about the story of the German-Jewish professors that were displaced by the [..]and were invited to come to Turkey by Ataturk's government. About 150 of them came in the 1933-1938 time frame. Some stayed for a few years, many stayed for 10 years or more. Some have stayed until retirement. The book, about 470 pages long and illustrated with many photographs and other material, is a really well-researched investigation into * the world circumstances that made this episode possible* the individuals who arranged the mechanics of this immigration* the personal life stories of these very capable scholars* how they adapted to life in Turkey* how they impacted Turkey's university education and modernization* the nature of the support and non-support they received from the government and the people This was a subject I had fleeting knowledge about. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, which greatly enhanced my knowledge and understanding of the subject. It also provided yet another illustration of the vision and genius of Ataturk in making deft use of every opportunity to improve his nation. It triggered in my mind the thought that Turkey probably had a second similar opportunity at the time of the disintegration of the Soviet Union, when top tier scientists in select fields could have easily been induced to come to Turkey. Unfortunately, political cadres in charge at the time had nowhere near Ataturk's vision. I would highly recommend this book to everyone. It is very readable and has many details that our generation can relate to. An interesting trivia is that Einstein was one month away himself from coming to Turkey within these group of scholars, when he received an offer from Princeton.
WOWW.......2007-01-01
A fascinating read.
I am very involved with genealogy, so I really enjoyed the memoirs.
The structure of the book was different and refreshing.
Highly recommended especially for college library, international studies and Turkish history shelves........2006-12-10
Written by Arnold Reisman Ph.D., who has served as Visiting Scholar in Turkey at both Sabanci University and the Istanbul Technical University, Turkey's Modernization: Refugees from Nazism and Ataturk's Vision is enlightening true story of how the Turkish Government of Mustafa Kernal Atatuk and Ismet Inonu accepted German and Austrian Jews, and took advantage of these victims of racial prejudice and persecution to aid the Turkish Republic's progress in academic, scientific, and medical undertakings. Tracing the lasting impacts of builders, preservers, creators, social reformers, healers, and scientists, as well as the problems they encountered, the turbulence caused by World War II and their attempts to emigrate to the U.S., Turkey's Modernization is a fascinating parable of how Turkey capitalized upon the best and the brightest - as well as of its stumbling blocks, such as its cultural predispositions for encouraging talented scientists to be content as hired hands rather than strike out and forge new businesses. Highly recommended especially for college library, international studies and Turkish history shelves.
Compelling!.......2006-09-26
Arnold Reisman's book, Turkey's Modernization, was a history lesson of the best kind. I have read a number of books on the Nazi takeover of various countries. Yet, I had never experienced the joy of learning how Turkey welcomed those expelled from Germany.
In 1933, when Hitler came to power, he decided to dismiss all Jewish professors from German colleges and universities. Geniuses of technology, physics and the arts fled into Turkey's waiting arms and began its well-deserved modernization.
The "emigres" (renowned scientists, architects and artists) are responsible for some of the most magnificent structures in Turkey still standing today. These brave professors taught Turkish students and were revered by most in the country. Of course, they had to deal with jealousy from Turkish professors for a number of reasons. Some of the emigres were paid a higher salary and enjoyed various perks, yet this was all deserved. It certainly couldn't heal a people
who were devastated at having to leave their homes and families to chart an unknown territory. Yet, thank God they did! Hitler's lost was absolutely Turkey's gain!
These professors were too many to be named in this review. You must read this book in order to understand and celebrate the contributions of these refugees from Nazism. They were saviors to Turkey and the students they benefited.
Turkey's Modernization was a book I couldn't put down. It should be required reading for all who are history majors and any who can enjoy a story of lemons turned into lemonade.
Armchair Interviews says: Another unique view of history most do not know.
Refuge and its reward .......2006-09-25
The convergence of two historical developments are at the center of this book. First , is the rise of the Nazis to power in Germany. Second, is the creation of modern Turkey, and its effort to develop a first- rate set of academic institutions. This convergence meant that a number of leading German and Austrian academics were invited in the years 1933-1939 to teach and help establish their disciplines in Turkey. Among these are some figures of world - reputation including Erich Auerbach, the author of one of the greatest of all works of Literary Criticism, 'Mimesis' the leading figures of the 'Berlin Group' the philosopher Hans Reichenbach, the mathemitician aerodynamist and positivist philosopher Richard von Mises, the positivist philosopher Carl Hempl, the composer Paul Hindemith, the theatrical producer Carl Ebert, and the astrophysicist Findlay Freundlich. One of the first scientists and a major figure in expediting the whole process was the pathologist Philip Schwarz. All in all close to three - hundred distinguished academics and their family members made their way to Turkey during this time. The effect of their efforts amounted to nothing less than a total transformation of the higher education system in Turkey, in the sciences, humanities, and arts, but also in public health, library, legal, engineering and administrative practices.
Reisman provides a thorough documentation and often moving narrative of this process, including his telling of many of the individual stories of the academicians involved. In the background he provides an overall history of modern Turkey and brings this up - to- date even providing an explanation of the current situation of the academic world in Turkey and why the original reforms carried out by these academicians have not always had the results desired.
This is a large book impressively researched and very clearly and movingly written.
I could not recommend it more highly.
