Book Description
Featuring standout writers of mystery and suspense like Lawrence Block, Jeffery Deaver, James W. Hall, Jeff Abbott, Michael Collins, Max Allan Collins, and Lee Child — all of them best-selling authors, most of them winners of Edgar or Shamus awards (or both) — this anthology comes with a chamberful of surefire stories. Loaded with tension, charged with uncertainty, these taut tales bring their unsuspecting or hunted and fearful marks into the deadly sight of a hired killer's gun. The hit men, or women, meanwhile match their criminal wits with police detectives, seasoned private eyes, the resolute everyguy, or amateur sleuths to often unexpected and frequently startling ends.
Every one of the stories here is a hit. Each of them craftily calibrated and written expressly for this collection, they include new work by the popular, award-winning Ed Gorman, the versatile writer-editor Robert J. Randisi, and the recipient of the first-ever Sherlock Award for best detective, John Harvey. With cunning invention hit-lit authors Christine Matthews, Barbara Serenella, Marcus Pelegrimas, and Kevin Wignall further ratchet up the suspense to keep Greatest Hits true to its name, and aim.

Book Description
Dominica is an island rich in culture and with a history that encompasses various forms of the country's transformation from colonialism to independence. African slaves, brought to the island to work on the British plantations, carried with them their various myths, beliefs, languages and art forms and these have passed down through the generations. Today they are still an integral part of this country's heritage.
The characters in "Mesyé Kwik! Kwak!" are used to portray some of these and other aspects of Dominican life which still have their bearing from years past. The young boys in The Stone and in The Pilgrim introduce us to the belief of Dominicans in evil spirits, the lougarou and la diabless, and the power of religion. Grandpa Was in America shows us Dominica's fixation to the American way of life and in A Father's Hope we see the widening gap between generations in the country-and there's more.
So read along with Giftus as he tells his story. Mesyé Kwik! Kwak!

This book is a must read. Brought back lots of memories of the old days in Dominica. Each story is one that every Dominican or West Indian can relate to. Good descriptions, I found myself truly taking the journey through the streets of St.Joe.
Good Job!

Book Description
In his best-selling The Cortisol Connection, Dr. Shawn Talbott explained how elevated levels of the cortisol hormone, when triggered by stress, will increase appetite, enhance fat storage, disrupt blood sugar control, and eventually lead to obesity that can cause diabetes and other serious conditions. This concise follow-up puts Talbott's cortisol control, diet, and exercise ideas into an accessible format.
The Cortisol Connection Diet shows beleaguered dieters how to eat for quality and for quantity at every meal. It focuses on the quality of carbs, fats, and proteins as well as the quantity, and explains how to use food, exercise, and dietary supplements to control cortisol and blood sugar. Most importantly, the book shows readers how to change their metabolic response to food and shed those seemingly impossible last 20 pounds. Included are a three-week log to chart diet, exercise, and supplements; and a sample regimen for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, and supplements.

The Cortisol Connection Diet - A "Must Read"!.......2004-12-08
If you have read any "diet" books from the past 10 years, and then attempted in vain to follow the advice in those books, you will really enjoy and appreciate reading the Cortisol Connection Diet. For starters, it's a very "easy read". It's as though you are listening to a casual conversation from a friend. The information is presented in a logical and easy to follow manner. I read the book cover to cover on a short plane ride. There were two particular aspects of the book that I thought were very unique and extremely helpful. First are the highlights at the end of each chapter. I have found myself on numerous occasions, going back to the book, reviewing the chapter highlights and quickly getting the information I was looking for. Secondly, the sample menu plans and daily logs at the end of the book were great! I would put this on anyone's "must read list"!
At last! The correct diet for stress symptoms!.......2004-12-04
I don't do stress well at all! After years as a first grade teacher and a stressful personal life, stress almost hospitalized me. Couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I was running on a pure histamine. My adrenals were shot-no emergency energy! I was covered with rash, depressed when I could come down enough. My muscles were wasting away. Then my thyroid crashed and I could barely drag my legs around to walk. After the thyroid started up again, the doctors "blood type diet" didn't do much. Then I saw an article on Dr. Talbott in a magazine and followed the advice while I waited for the book to arrive. I've only been on the plan for 10 days and the depression is gone and, oh, yes the brain fog. I can do 30 minutes a day on my crosstrainer. I am sleeping better and feel more positive. All this after I had to quit work five years ago because this syndrome is so debilitating. Great book! Read it! Use it! It's for everyone since we're all living under stress. I'm into The Cortison Connection now. I fell like I'm giving myself a second chance at life and loving it.
If you're tired of starving to loose weight and want to eat to achieve a healthy body and spirit, this is the best. I don't have those awful sugar cravings anymore. Did I mention I was on heavy Prednisone for five years and had drug-induced hypoglycemia? Anyway, this food plan (it's not a diet because you're never hungry) is perfect. I was never able to get the weight to drop off and now it's coming off.
Thanks, Dr. Talbott. People like you come along far too infrequently. Penecillin and the polio vaccines for the 20th century. Obesity for the 21st! If anyone should question this books importance, open your eyes to how few fit people you see. We've been "digging our own graves with a spoon"! Examine the statistics. It makes perfect SENSE. It's soooo simple!
An excellent follow up with an easy to follow plan.......2004-12-01
I picked up The Cortisol Connection on a business trip a year ago and read it cover to cover on the flight home to Boston. It was an easy read that provided lots of information about the science behind stress and its affect on the body. As a salesperson doing lots of travel it really was an eye opener on what stress was doing to my body.
My wife (mother to 3 kids under 5 at the time) also found Dr. Talbott's book to be extremely informative. Having tried different diets and weight loss supplements, she appreciated finally having information about how stress was affecting her ability to "shed the pounds".
In his second book, The Cortisol Connection Diet, Dr. Talbott provides more useful information and concrete examples of how to use his "SENSE" program to lead to an overall healthier lifestyle. Both my wife and I enjoyed this book as much as the first (it was an even easier read!!!)and look forward to putting some of the additional "tidbits" on reducing stress and proper diet to use.
If you've read the first book, you'll find this an excellent follow up. If you haven't read the first book, this one definitely stands on its own, although I'd recommend both.
Solid easy to read information.......2004-11-30
The two books..the Cortisol Connection and The Cortisol Diet are a must read for anyone stressed from everyday life. Dr. Talbott offers recommendations on diet, lifestyle and supplements which are not only easy to follow, they make a profound difference to your health. You don't have to be overwheight to take advantage of this diet. Its a diet for anyone that is stressed from life.
Reader from DC.......2004-11-22
Excellent book! I have only recently heard about Cortisol and the roll it plays in weight gain, and Talbott does a good job of explaining how it works. I feel as though he were writing about me. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because I felt he could have explained more about eating on the plan itself, instead of just giving an example for one day of meals.

Simple and Honest.......2007-03-04
The book is what I expected. A bit of everything I tasted in Lithuania, and simple to cook. I specially recommend the Honey Liquor, because it is a very Lithuaninan and traditional beverage, and tastes good.
Good recipe book.......2000-07-28
It was what I expected, but I was hoping to be surprised. However still a great overall collection of recipies. I would have liked to see more detail. For example the book sais "cook beets separately", well how long do you boil beets? Americans now adays generally just know how to open can, pour and microwave. Also substitutes for ingredients like pike and carp should be mentioned. I know from living in Lithuania that these fish are common there, but not easy to find pike and carp in the grocery stores here in the states. Also, the book often sais to use mushrooms. However Lithuanians are masters at mushrooms. They have different terms for a species of mushroom depending on when they are picked, if they are under, on the side or on top of a log, etc. I personally use cremini mushrooms for Lithuanian cuisine for the more "gamey" nature. To make this book special a professional editor could do wonders. It would be great to see the meals broken down by the regions of Lithuania, and a historical reference of how these foods and spices made their way to Lithuania. However, I guess I am reaching for the sky. I would just like to see a book that gets people focused on the amazing foods of Central Europe. So many times people ignore agrarian cuisine as "peasant food" and fail to see the brilliance of it's simple ingredients mixed w/ expert preparation. With all this said, I am happy I spent [the money] on this book. I will definitely use it as a reference.
DELICIOUS.......1999-03-21
No matter how many cookbooks you may already possess, I happily recommend your adding Maria Gieysztor De Gorgey'sto your collection. It's indispensable !

Improved Communication.......2007-08-22
I loved this book! The process works! I share my home with a pack of six rescues and have felt at such a loss in communication, always expecting them to understand me.
I began to follow the suggestions in this marvelous book and what a difference it has made in my fur children and their attitudes. One easy thing to do that has helped so much is to talk to them before I leave. Remembering they were deserted, dropped off and have resideual separation anxiety, I now sit down with them gathered sitting in a semi-circle in front of me and tell them where I am going, how long I will be gone, that I will return, who is in charge while I am gone, to use the paper if there is fear of an accident while I am gone, to take care of the house, not get into trouble, love each other and that I love them. Wow! What a different greeting when I come home! No more destruction, no more frantic scratching at the door when I return. They are calm! I have shared this with a friend who has cats and she has asked them not to awaken her every morning at 6. The first day they awakened her at 6:36. I suggested she explain to them why she did not want to be awakened and now they let her sleep until the alarm goes off. Such a great hand book! I bought one for my Vet and Vet specialist!
The best one yet!.......2004-06-17
I've read two other animal communication books besides this one, and I must say that out of the three, this one was the best. It had the easiest approach to speaking intuitively with animals, and it worked for me where the other two books hadn't. Immediately after reading this book, I felt my communication skills with my dogs improve twice as much as it previously had been. My one dog, who had never before retrieved and returned a tennis ball for me and with no formal training, did it the first time after I explained to him how it was done. I was so impressed!
While this book was an easy read and very straight forward, I expected there to be more content. But this does not bring down the value of the book in any way because the method it describes works very well! I strongly recommend this book to any person that would like to speak with their beloved pet.
Outstanding and simple to understand.......2003-03-01
Outstanding and simple to understand guide for bridging the gap of interspecies communication. Opens up a whole new world for communication with our companion animals and pets. Arlene Millman, author of BOOMERANG - A MIRACLE TRILOGY (The tale of a remarkable Boston Terrier).
Maggie Listens To Me Now.......2002-04-24
This is actually a pre-review since I just ordered The Animal Connection this morning. I venture forth with a review because I happened to meet the author, Judy Meyer, this morning and was lucky enough to have her preview her book for me along with a few tips. These were jewels! I'm not going to ruin her sales by passing them along to you but I can say that my black Lab, Maggie, who was a natural retriever until someone taught her "Keep Away" and who for years has been reluctant to return fetched sticks now magically does so. I say to her "Maggie, I would like it better if you gave the stick to me" And she did, and she does! Buy the book. I did.
Good content but not enough detail........2001-11-22
I enjoyed reading this book but found the information to be over simplified, more suited to a pamphlet than a book. I would like to see a more indepth discussion of the techniques.
Book Description

Book Description
Gardens for the Soul is a truly inspiring approach to garden design. Garden designer and plantswoman Pamela Woods' unique approach teaches you how to create a garden that reflects your spiritual beliefs and inner emotions. She invokes the power and beauty of ancient symbols, like Celtic wheels and spirals, with Eastern practices, such as feng shui, to create gardens that are relaxing, meditative and, above all, beautiful.
Beginning with a discussion of what makes a garden spiritual using historical examples and her own modern designs, Pamela then discusses how to analyze and channel the energies in your garden using techniques such as feng shui, dowsing and basic common sense. She also looks at ancient symbols and systems, for example, The Tree of Life, the medicine wheel, mandalas, spirals and labyrinths, and how to incorporate them into your own garden. Pamela then explores how shapes and forms in nature are reflected throughout the universe, in history and in science, and how to draw upon these universal patterns as inspiration for your gardens. Inspirational chapters explain how plants can possess healing powers and symbolic mysticism and explore how to appreciate the foundations of your garden--tending the earth itself, incorporating wildernes and understanding the seasons that nurture your garden.
Simple graphic illustrations, helpful plans and John Glover's evocateive photography combine with spiritual theories and practical garden advice to help you create a space that is full of peace and resonance--an extension of your own soul and somewhere you will feel completely at home.
Customer Reviews:
Bizarre.......2006-10-09
What a bizarre book. I checked it out from the library expecting beautiful photographs of stunning gardens and equally lovely descriptions. Not here! Instead, there are lush photographs and bizarre psychobabble. Of course, I am a scientist, and have a hard time dealing with this type of nonsense at the best of times.
Don't waste either your time or money. The photographs are beautiful, but the the written portion seems to consist solely of Ms. Woods's silly spiritual ramblings.
wonderful and inspiring.......2005-07-20
Gardens for the Soul is a wonderful and inspiring book filled with beautiful pictures.
If you are looking for a "how to build a pond, steps 1, 2, 3" kind of book, this is not the right one for you.
Pamela Woods has a vast knowledge of various ancient systems and symbolism which she incorporates in her garden designs in a subtle and yet powerful way. The book doesn't go into each option in debth, that would explode the size of the book is not aimed. The author gives the reader rather a different view of gardening. Whatever your spiritual inclination there is a way to incorporate it in a garden design to make it a garden for the soul. This book is so inspiring that you might feel that building a sacred garden is your purpose of life where you can be at peace with yourself and the world. A very different gardening book. Enjoy!

This book is fantastic!.......2003-02-05
I bought this masterpiece after I read 'The Non-Designers Design Book' by Robin Williams. The content is much the same, but explored much more thoroughly, with clear examples and well-thought layouts.
If you want to get only one book on Desktop Publishing, THIS IS THE ONE! Don't waste your time with other books.
My Favorite Design Book!.......2001-10-12
I adore this book! It is one of those books that I just pick up and flip to a random page, and absorb the wisdom. It is full of tiny little things you can do to make your work look more professional. This guy is amazing.
Roger Parker Makes it Easy.......2000-07-22
One-Minute Designer Revised edition Roger C. Parker MIS:Press, 1997
Like it or not, if you use a computer you are a typographer, and that's anyone who arranges words within a given space: letter, report, bulletin, brochure, ad, billboard, book, sign etc. You don't have to be a graphic designer to create good typography because Roger Parker makes it easy to communicate clearly. The book is methodically organized. Each page is devoted to one subject, i.e. column width, placement, type sizes, word and letter spacing, font choice-all 204 of them. Parker writes easily, clearly, succinctly, and is always on the side of the reader, and the absence of verbiage and posturing is refreshing. Each page has direct, easy-to-understand two color illustrations that unambiguously define the text. Unlike program manuals that have incomplete or misnamed subjects, I'm impressed with Parker's contents page and glossary, which makes it easy for the reader to find information quickly. The soft cover book is a comfortable, easy to hold 7" x 9" portrait format. For quick review, the italic captions are printed in red. Text is set in one of my favorite fonts Minion, designed by Robert Slimbach one of the world's great type designers. The generous 11-point size makes is easy to read. This is a book that makes it easy to produce good looking, well organized layouts that communicate, a rarity in manuals. Parker's book should be within arm's length at a workstation, and [for the money], it's money in the bank.
Doyald Young, teacher and author: Logotypes & Letterforms and Fonts & Logos
Absolutely genius!.......2000-04-22
This book is amazing. It lists 200 examples of good and bad design in a text/title/image/graphic perspective for business documents (which is just like a website). This book is a bible for begining or intermediate graphic designers who want to make the perfectly organized data (newsletters, website, newspaper, etc). Instead of long chapters of boring theory and idealism, it points out common design mistakes and shows a better way to do it and throws in a couple sentences of theory to it. In my opinion this is a must in anyone's library of books.
nobody will ever write a book this good on Web design.......1999-03-15
A paper design is self-explanatory and self-maintaining. This is why Roger Parker was able to write this superb book on design for paper. Web publishing involves collaborative maintenance of a collection of material. So one can never achieve such clarity. Anyway, this is a great book if you want to design some paper stuff and it is also good to think about why you'll never have it this easy in the Web world.
