Book Description
A dazzling debut -- already an international publishing sensation -- combining forensics, history, archaeology, and suspense.
Introducing Erin Hart, who brings the beauty, poignancy, mystery, and romance of the Irish countryside to her richly nuanced first novel.
When farmers cutting turf in a peat bog make a grisly discovery -- the perfectly preserved severed head of a young woman with long red hair -- Irish archaeologist Cormac Maguire and American pathologist Nora Gavin team up in a case that will open old wounds.
Peat bogs prevent decay, so the decapitated young woman could have been buried for two decades, two centuries, or even much longer. Who is she? When was she killed? The extraordinary find leads to even more disturbing puzzles. The red-haired girl is clearly a case for the archaeologists, not the police. Still, her tale may have shocking ties to the present, and Cormac and Nora must use cutting-edge techniques to preserve ancient evidence.
And the red-haired girl is not the only enigma in this remote corner of Galway. Two years earlier, Mina Osborne, the local landowner's Indian-born wife, went for a walk with her young son and never returned. Did Mina simply decide to disappear, or did mother and child become lost in the treacherous bog? Could they, too, be hidden in its depths, only to be discovered centuries from now? Or did the landowner, Hugh Osborne, murder his family, as some villagers suspect?
Bracklyn House, Osborne's stately home, holds many secrets for Nora and Cormac and policeman Garrett Devaney. But time is running out. Devaney's superiors want him off the Osborne case. Now. He wants to stay and find a killer.
Meticulously crafted and resonating with traditional music and folklore, Haunted Ground celebrates Ireland's turbulent history, revealing the eternal, subliminal connections between past and present in a riveting novel that heralds the arrival of a bright new crime-writing star.

Wow! What a book!.......2007-08-02
I was entranced by this story - the landscape, the characters, the plot, the writer - everything was beautiful. Erin Hart knows how to write, and how to keep a reader intrigued. I especially appreciated the extra chapters at the end. Rather than following other writers of this genre, Hart actually FINISHED the story! Far too many mysteries end with the solution of the crime, while leaving you hanging about what happened to the characters you've come to know throughout the story. Thank you Erin for letting us know what happened next!
Buy this book, read this book, buy more copies to give to friends who appreciate good storytelling!
Great find.......2007-02-12
I picked this book up at a library book sale for 50 cents. I would have been happy to pay full price for it! In the tradition of other forensic novels, we get a great deal of detail about the head found in the bog. The story intertwines the search for other clues about the bog lady, with a current mystery--the disappearance of a mother and child 2 years earlier. There is great character development of the main characters--Cormac & Nora in particular--as well as the local police detective. The details of Irish history enhance the story and make it much more interesting. Clearly the author has done her research and it has paid off in this well-written mystery/romance/forensic novel. I'm putting the second one on my wish list so I'll remember to buy it soon!
Amazing debut novel and page-turner!.......2007-01-11
It is hard to believe that this novel is Erin Hart's first, because the writing is so good and the characters so well developed. Not so much a typical murder-mystery, with body, motive and capture, the novel is much more elegant than that. Based around an old body that is found in a peat bog in Ireland, the story interweaves history and current day affairs and Irish culture so seamlessly. It was a pleasure to read and I can't wait to read her next novel.
Goof read.......2007-01-09
Enjoyed reading this book very much, in particular because I recognized many of the places appearing in the novel.
Not quite what I was expecting but a good read nonetheless.......2006-06-27
I was expecting more of a good Irish ghost story. Instead it turned out to be an ancient mystery and a modern day missing person mystery. I thought the story was well paced and wasn't boring - just not as thrilling as a great ghost story would've been!
I still think it was worth reading and would recommend it for all mystery lovers.
Book Description
Too often, we overlook the problems other people have because we want to avoid getting involved. But there are times when getting involved is the only choice you have and when all is said and done, it is those who have the courage to do what is right who will make the difference. Deciding to make a stand against bullies, abusive teachers and social constraints makes for a difficult struggle but at what price will you sacrifice your dignity?

Issues.......2005-05-30
Confidential Confessions is one of the greatest manga of all time because it deals with real issues. You wont find any magic, superheroes, or bishounen in this series. Instead you will read about girls who have to deal with tough issues such as bullying, rape, sexual harassment, drugs, prostitution, stalking, and suicide. I recommend that every teen read Confidential Confessions.
Vol. 1
A strong beginning to an amazing series. The first story in this volume deals with bulling, suicide, while the second story deals with prostitution.
Vol. 2
This entire volume deals sexual harassment and is an awesome follow up the first volume.
Vol. 3
The first story in this volume is great because it explores drugs and some of the reasons why kids take them, however the second story is forgettable and is overshadowed by its predecessors.
Vol. 4
The story in this volume deals with prostitution again but instead of having a protagonist go into prostitution because of bad circumstances, this girl goes into prostitution because she is very materialistic and wants money to buy brand name items. The next story revisits the issue of bullying but in more depth. Both of the stories are remarkable but the next story is (for lack of better terms) lame. It deals with lesbianism but the impact is not hard hitting because the main character seems like a stalker rather than someone who is hiding her true feelings for the same sex.
Vol. 5
This volume treads on the tender issues of rape and AIDS. This volume is magnificent and I believe it should have been the last because of the bittersweet ending.
Vol. 6
This is the weakest of all 6 volumes and is a pathetic and disappointing end to a great yet disturbing series. The first story is about stalking and the second story involves a girl who is transformed from a victim to a bully.
There you have it, the complete mini-guide to Confidential Confessions. Like I said before this is a great manga and should be read by all teens. My only complaint is that this story was meant for the Japanese and so some of the main characters actions wont make sense to Americans (you might say, "what the hell is the matter with them, why don't they speak up for themselves!?)" because the Japanese are much more reserved people who don't like to make trouble for their family of school.
Recommended Reading.......2004-09-22
The Confidential Confessions Series is something that every girl or woman should read, manga reader or hater alike. Reiko Momochi has really captured the emotions and degree of each crisis for each character in the series, from dealing with drugs to escape problems, to dealing with sexual harassment from a teacher.
You feel for the each girl in each story, weather its anger for what you feel is a stupid solution for the situation, to sadness because nothing can be done. And with each situation comes a change in the characters involved, it being good or bad depending on what they hold dear. The atmosphere my be a bit dark, but it adds to the seriousness of the situation. But with the darkness is light, in some form or another.
I highly recommend this manga to anyone who wants to read something that can hit close to home.
Too true.......2004-04-04
I would reccomend any book in this series... it delivers a good slice of the shoujo we love in an extremely realistic way with very real problems we all deal with today. Even people who aren't interested in anime would want to take a look at one of these. You don't have to collect them in any particular order becuase the series itself is a collection of short stories. There's a story for everyone... I know that in this particular book I was dumbstruck to see that the story "Forbidden Kiss" hit very close to home... I broke down crying while reading it. The stories seem to have been spread out over a period of time (the art quality fluctuates over stories) but any changes are overlooked as each story captivates and motivates you to make the world right. A must read, pick one up immediately.
This particular volume deals with catalouge prostitution (if anyone knows a proper term for this, tell me. As far as I know it's a strictly Japanese thing), corporal punishment, "hazing" and torment by other students, and a teenage girl in love with her (female) best friend.
CC.......2004-03-25
I liked this book, at first it was very confusing and weird. But CC goes deeply into the dynamic characters. The two situations in the book are very realistic and lifelike making the reader either love or hate the story.
A very good manga book?.......2004-03-25
Today I just started reading the first story .For most people it would probably make them feel sad but it made me feel confused .It makes you think of life and afterdeath. And you kinda feel for her friend Asparagus because every gets teased and it can make you go insane.

Pick an ailment--any ailment--and chances are, Bill Gottlieb can succinctly crystallize the problem, propose its root cause, and describe a handful of nonmedical remedies for treatment. Creator and supervising editor of the bestselling Doctors Book of Home Remedies, this 25-year veteran of the health field draws from more than 300 alternative care practitioners (including holistic nutritionists, licensed acupuncturists, massage therapists, and the occasional swami) to present a thick textbook worthy of gracing the reference shelf of any family or health provider. Serious physical ailments like asthma, HIV and AIDS, stroke, and cancer receive equal attention with pesky afflictions like oily hair, acne, nightmares, and wrinkles. Mental health ailments, such as guilt, anxiety, grief, and shyness, also get their due. Gottlieb's stance is not that individuals should shun their primary care physicians to rely solely on herbs, better nutrition, and other alternative paths. Rather, he seeks to educate readers on the biological effects of such practices and tinctures, to share their documented benefits in helpful detail. Each ailment receives a sidebar titled "Guide to Professional Care," in which Gottlieb outlines symptoms that warrant immediate medical attention. Other sidebars highlight especially helpful treatment--from aromatherapy to meditation--for various troubles. Gottlieb provides an section on alternative healing where he elaborates on the process, benefits, and safety of each general treatment referred to in the book (from acupuncture to yoga therapy). Complete information, an engaging writing style, and visually appealing graphics make this encyclopedia-style book very easy to digest. --Liane Thomas

great reference book.......2007-08-09
I enjoy health books. This is a good reference book. Lots of ailments covered and several natural remedies for each. Worth the investment!
More new-agey than I wanted.......2007-07-16
I had hoped this book would offer a no-nonsense approach to alternative remedies to common health problems. While there are some helpful sections, many of the solutions to problems involve more ephemereal suggestions than concrete ones. I expected mostly suggestions for herbs and supplements, not so much of the new-agey (or perhaps ancient?) stuff about aligning chakras, etc.
A lot of great information here, condensed for your convenience.......2007-05-09
Chock full of great information - a suggested book to keep on your bookshelf. I suffer from Tinnitus and have utilized so many internet sources and other books, and this book had additional suggestions that I had not yet heard of, so I highly recommend the book.

With even a casual reading of Lucy Norris's Pickled you will never again look the same way at cucumbers or cabbage. Or okra, or jalapeños, or eggplant for that matter. Welcome to the world of pickles and pickling. And, as Norris so ably demonstrates, it is one big world. She introduces Pickled with a bit of history and a lot of technique. This being a food preservation technology and all, it pays to be attentive up front here to working safely. Her chapters then break down as "Cucumbers"; "Cabbage and Other Leafy Greens"; "Root Vegetables, Eggplant, Tomatoes, Mushrooms and More"; "Mixed Vegetables"; "Fruit"; "Meat, Poultry, and Eggs"; "Seafood and Fish." For those who think pickles begin and end with kosher pickle spears, Norris opens the door to such delights as Shiozuke (Salt-Cured Japanese Cucumbers), or O-I Kimchi (Stuffed Cucumber Kimchi). And beyond the boundaries of the cucumber: Hot and Sour Pickled Cabbage, Pickled Ginger, Beguner Achar (Eggplant Pickle), Tomato Chutney, Romanian Pickled Peppers, and Green Mango Pickle. And that isn't even scratching the surface.
What truly comes clear is that pickling is not a difficult technology. With Norris's help and guidance you can give yourself permission to invent your very own pickling tradition, then fill the shelves of your pantry with unimaginably delicious treats, little surprises to pull out and bring to the table. Pickled truly is all about preserving a world of tastes and traditions. --Schuyler Ingle
Book Description
Who doesn't love pickles? Every cuisine has its pickle, and in Pickled Lucy Norris takes readers through cucumbers and beyond, presenting a varied and tangy collection of more than 80 recipes, each one passed down in families through the generations, as a proper pickle recipe should be. Homemade pickles taste better than any store-bought brand--and they're surprisingly easy to make.
The variety is astonishing--from simple to complex, some ready to eat within 24 hours and many that don't require canning. Not only bread-and-butter pickles, and traditional Mississippi chow-chow, but also Indian chutneys, and Asian pickles, from two great pickling cuisines. Other delectable recipes include French cornichons, Haitian pikliz, and Armenian preserved lemon. And for the truly adventurous, there's Japanese Dragon Cucumber, Full Moon Cabbage with Pomegranate Juice, Smashed Radish, and Good Mother's Salty Duck Egg. Sprinkled throughout with family and historical photos, there's a story behind every pickle.

A great gift for the cooks on your list!.......2003-06-05
This book helped me fulfill my gift-giving needs for all the cooks on my list. It is not only informative and functional but it is so beautifully presented that it fits just as nicely on the coffee table as in the kitchen. Great recipes and great photographs combine to make one great book.
Eye-Opening and Palate-Tickling.......2003-05-27
I think this book is fabulous. So cool that someone finally did a really nice book on this subject. The pictures are gorgeous and you can read it like a novel with all the little stories of different people and their backgrounds and recipes -- or you can get right into the pickling process and end up with stuff that you sort of never really thought you could make. I tried the mustard pickles and they were better than anything i've had out of a jar and took about 5 seconds to make. The Haitian Pikliz is insanely spicy, but I can't seem to keep it in my fridge between me and my husband. I can already see a gift idea for lots of my friends...a jar of pickles plus the book. How excellent.
astonishing indeed!.......2003-05-24
For those interested in collecting single subject books, this is one to add to your collection. This basically covers all you need to know about pickles and how they are made throughout the world. It's like reading a personal note from a friend.
Continue the tradition - or start one of your own.......2003-05-21
In a world filled with celebrity chefs pasting their face on every possible cookbook, it's refreshing to see someone courageously return the spotlight to the real stars: food and you. Lucy Norris --thankfully-- assumes nothing in her writing. In addition to the clear recipes and personal stories, she includes information on pickle history, directions for safe canning, equipment lists, ingredients, resources, weights and measures. The range of recipes will encourage beginners and inspire the experienced chef alike. And many of the recipes can be eaten within 24 hours - perfect for entertaining, gift-giving, or the impatiently hungry. One word of advice: buy more than one copy of the book. You will find yourself wanting to share these recipes with your friends and family, and this book makes a perfect gift. They'll be thanking you for generations to come.

Not the book for finding prices of cans or trays.......2000-04-23
Book has an extremely limited amount of content. Only the rarest trays are and signs are listed with prices. If your looking for prices for most of the trays you see this is not the book for you, also not a beer can price guide at all. If your expecting to look up Kruger, Ballentine, etc. companys trays to find prices, your not going to find it here.
Wonderful artifacts.......1998-02-12
Herb and Helen Haydock are the most successful collectors of American brewing artifacts ever to engage in the hobby. Over several decades, they have amassed (and have now donated to Miller Brewing Co. for safekeeping and display) an astounding array of breweriana including cans, trays, back bar breweriana, paper goods, giveaways, etc. Many of these rare and unique items are displayed beautifully in this book, which features finely detailed color and black and white photographs of items in their collection. The book concentrates on full size trays, but does hit on all areas of the brewery collecting hobby. Of note is the Haydocks' specialized interest in the old Potosi brewery. The only criticism I have relates to the estimated pricing of the artifacts - based on my own experience, I would argue that the prices here are at least 30% lower than you would actually pay to acquire the item, and in several cases less than half of what you could reasonably expect to fork over. Aside from that, this is a wonderful trip through time at some items that most of us will only be able to see in this book.

All in one guide!.......2000-04-09
With the new addition of InDesign to the field of Graphic Communications, a guide really needed to be written for the smooth transition. This book is excellent and is a must for any InDesign user, whether advanced or novice. It directly relates to the field of printing and is a great addition to any collection.
Good advice!.......2000-03-31
At over thirty dollars, I expected more from this book. Like a better index. Some organization. And honesty about what the problem can and can't do. This book is little more than a sales demo of what the product can do. However, even then they haven't done a very good job.
I suppose this book would be OK if I were taking a class and had a teacher there. But on its own there's not enough explanation of why you want to do things.
The visual quickstart book is half the price, but contains much better instructions, is laid out better, and has a good index.

Book Description
The child of a heroin-addicted mother growing up amidst poverty, violence, and drugs in the ghetto of West Dallas, Jerrold Ladd was determined to lead a better life. Fiercely independent, he took responsibility for his future, and, with the love of his family, became the first person in his family to attend college and later a national spokesperson on inner city problems.
Customer Reviews:
Eye-opener, well written and well spoken (audio cassette).......2004-08-19
This story is hard to imagine anyone living through. Mr. Ladd's accomplishments are outstanding. This brings a reality to the reader that most people have no idea exists except those living it. This autobiography also shows the power of determination, attitude and self-reliance.
This should be inspiring and educational to young people especially but also to adults who can see the world from a young black man's perspective. Ladd allows us to walk in his shoes for a while; it is a privilege and a lesson.
The narrator for the audiocassette does an excellent job reading the book.
This story reminded me of "Finding Fish" by Antwoine Fisher, another great, inspiring story.
West Dallas's Teacher's review..........2000-12-20
As a 24 yearold 1st yr. teacher in West Dallas I have been looking for answers. I work at the Middle School across from the projects referred to in this book. I am not too far from "Fishtrap", and the gangs (boyz) have changed from Ladd's time but only by the faces of their members. Some of the most infamous being my most delightful students. My kids are not like all of the others in America. They are different...special even and Jerrold Ladd told me why. As I read this book with every page I turned I anticipated that the "story" would get better. I prayed that his mother would change. I longed for the chapter when some long lost Great-Uncle from Georgia would come and take him from the reality of his torrid life. But it never happened. And I became frustarted because my students do not have anyone to rescue them from their realities, not for the long haul at least. Jerrold Ladd's book explained to me the generational frustaration that West Dallas incorporates. The resentment and struggle of blocks and blocks of people is the only thing this community truly owns. Ladd wrote the testament and explanation of a community's fear. His hopes and fears were evident on every page of this book. I only wish that my studenrs could take time from their troubles of hunger, fear, anger, and poverty to big up this reflection of possible positive self. Thank you for this invaluable tool of living and learning.
The 1st yr. West Dallas Teacher's review..........2000-12-19
As a 24 yearold 1st year Teacher in West Dallas I have looked for reasons as to why my students (my kids) as I call them are the way they are. I teach eighth grade History at Thomas Edison Middle Learning Center which is located across the street from the projects referred to by Mr. Ladd. I can testify that all of my 109 students are the soul of Jerrold Ladd.
I have gone home frustrated many nights, crying myself to sleep distraught over what my kids must face at home from day to day after a long day at school. Mr. Ladd brought home the realities of my student lives. He pushed their questionable futures to the forefront of my classroom and by this Christmas I was sad to see them go. I was sad because I questioned how many of them would bathe without the motivation of not being ridiculed by mean classmates. I was sad because I wondered to what length one of my kids would go to pay his mother's rent, the same mother who stood in front of me and her precious son parent-confrence night and stated how he was a waste of 13 years.
As I turned the pages of this book I waited with each page for Mr. Ladd's situation to get better. Similarly, as I come to work everyday I look for my kids situation to get better. In the final ten to twelve pages of this testament to the community of West Dallas I finally saw inspiration and hope, however I shudder to think how long it will take the children of West Dallas to see the same thing.
Jerrold Ladd thank you for this guide into the minds of my babies. It is a invaluable tool.
WINNING IN AMERICA - AGAINST ALL ODDS.......2000-10-02
Excellent writing from a motivated and dedicated young man. Jerrold Ladd experienced disrupted education, a lack of early age positive male influence while proving first hand, that you can over come all obstacles and succeed in America.
It is a gut wrenching look into living in America's projects shortly after desegregation. It reminded me of the fact that life in America is not and has never been the same for everyone. For many, it is a living torture. Once you have read Out Of The Madness, you feel like you personally know the author. The author, Jerrold Ladd, tells an in-depth story about his life, his family (Mother, sister and brother) and some of his friends and associates. He provides an incredible amount of detail for a relatively short book (under 200 pages and large print). He allowed me to walk in his foot steps, feeling his disappointments, success's and failures. Each chapter presented intense quality of life and life treating situations that would test and potentially break the fiber of any man or woman. Jerrold exposes himself, his friends and associates in a bold and remarkable manner that allows you to actually feel his emotions. This book is a dead serious look at life within a segment of America, yesterday and today. The book reminds you that to many people (children and adults), needlessly, experience this and worst everyday. I recommend the book as a must read for everyone. My reason: This book provides an insight into a situation that many generations of Americans helped create. It gives motivation to those in similar situations and those that have not lived integrated into murder, drugs and abuse. Most of all, it proves, in America you can change your life.
Out of Curiousity..........2000-03-23
I am a freshman student at my high school, and was assigned to a book report... I then choose this book, yet not out of wantingness, but just to get something and be done with it. When I started this book, I was so amazed at the details, and way Jerrold lived, with such horrific times in his live from his living style, to growing up, and all the obstacles, and problems that occured in his life. It was so sad, yet you cant put it down.
