Book Description

Can a love of dead poets save her from following in their footsteps?

While visiting her favorite poets' old haunts in England's Lake District, Grace Hollister, an American schoolteacher and literary scholar, stumbles upon the body of Peter Fox face down in a stream. Thankfully, the dashing local antiques dealer is not dead -- but after saving his life Grace soon finds herself pursued by two menacing thugs who are after the gewgaws Peter is hiding. Problem is, Peter doesn't have any gewgaws. He doesn't even know what gewgaws are. But he and Grace soon discover they've got something to do with Lord Byron¨and someone's willing to kill for them.

As Peter's dark past is gradually revealed, his knowledge of vice coupled with Grace's love of verse lead them straight into the heart of a caper of the highest order -- one that might lead to a spectacular literary discovery and poetic justice for all.

5 out of 5 stars Literate caper with action and smarts.......2007-09-24

The Poetic Death series by Diana Killian is on my top ten mystery series list. High Rhymes and Misdemeanors, the initial book is full of action, laughs , chills and full of smart dialogue, twisty plot points and two of the most beguiling lead characters to come along in ages. Grace Hollister, American academic and Peter Fox, British former (he says)bad boy couldn't be more opposite. And you know what opposites do!
Full of scenic atmosphere, the Lake District serves as a backdrop for the action as Grace unfolds a mystery involving Lord Byron that people are only to willing to kill for.
I highly recommend this book. You will not be disappointed and will rush right out ( or order on-line) to get the rest of the Poetic Death series.

2 out of 5 stars Grace Hollister--could never survive the real world.......2005-05-17

I bought this novel based on the glowing reviews associated with it, and have to say I was somewhat disappointed. While the 18th century poetry and literature references were nice, they couldn't successfully neutralize Grace's utter daftness--she's like Daphne from Scooby Doo. If her character had only been a little smarter, I wouldn't have winced from page to page.As it was, all I can think is that Peter must enjoy answering inane questions and dealing with a ditz on a day-to-day basis. I don't mean to be cruel--just saying I think the book could have been better if the main character hadn't seen an enemy in everyone and everything.
And you don't brown garlic! You saute it!

4 out of 5 stars Great fun.......2005-02-25

While it doesn't remain exactly true to the mystery writing rules (there are people introduced too far into the novel), it has all the elements of a rollicking good romance with a charming romantic rogue, secret panels, English country houses, and sinister Sikhs. It is a fun read, and I will read more by this author.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this book.......2005-01-09

I actually picked up the second book first, not realizing it was a series. I liked that one very muxh, but I loved this one. I might have said the same about the other had I read it second. It's a fine read without being read in sequence, but the literary quotes were more obtrusive in the second.

In this book, however, they flow easily and are always "spot on." Grace and Peter are wonderful characters; in this one you really get inside their heads, and yet Peter remains rather mysterious. The attraction between them is much more obvious here.

The mystery is delightful with just the right twists and turns, and Killian's writing is superb. Chapter 1 opens, for example, with an idyllic scene featuring a lovely chattering brook -- and a dead body. Delicious! and vastly entertaining. Killian has a wry way of turning a phrase.

The pace is lively, and the story never flags. Add in such captivating characters, and this is a book to be REread -- and I don't often do that. Definitely a keeper!! I just wish I had about 50 more like it.

5 out of 5 stars Well-written, a joy to read........2004-10-26

This is an excellent mystery which I thoroughly enjoyed. The writing itself is refreshing, in a world full of rapid-fire schlock. The premise is believable, the characters are believable, and the story is exciting as well as interesting.

5 out of 5 stars Waiting for More.......2006-10-08

--The following is a review I received from one of the people who helped proofread/edit the novel. it is also available on my website danielcnielsen.com

When I was first given the synopsis of Darksteel Destinies, I was impressed with the originality of the idea. A roman-like legion sent to fight in a jungle environment against Aztec like enemies? I told Daniel it would be an incredible story? if he could pull it off. He did, and then some. This is not your typical wizards and dragons tale, ladies and gentleman, but an epic adventure. (Hollywood will pick it up, if they?re smart.) Follow Daedus and his legion from frozen wastelands and the corrupt, decaying capitol of the Markan Empire, to the jungles of Mictlan. There, sorcerers use their magic to create chaos in a battle to control the Mictlan Empire, and to discover, or protect the secret of the very weapons they wield, and the demi-goddess who created them. This book has it all: greed, lust, betrayal, prophecy, pathos, mystery, power and conquest. The battles are so well written, you can hear the screams of the troops, and smell the smoke and burning flesh. In fact, Darksteel Destinies will appeal not only to fantasy lovers, but anyone who enjoys reading military strategy and history-based stories. A fast-paced novel that kept me engrossed from beginning to end. And what an ending it is! I'm sure Daniel loved the email I sent to him upon finishing the manuscript, ?Arrrgh! Daniel, I can?t believe you left me hanging like that! Grrr? Send me chapters from the next book as soon as you finish them!?

Thanks Daniel. Still waiting for more?

It is a winner through and through. I'm in love with characters, plot and the writing style of Daniel Nielsen. It is a book that you can read over and over again and each time find new prospective every single time. Amazingly easy to read. It captivated my attention and would not let go. Great writing style which is so hard to find now days.

    Book Description

    A Step-by-Step Guide

Highly sensitive people (HSPs), who make up some 20 percent of the population, are individuals who both enjoy and suffer from a finely tuned neurological system. This condition can be a gift, but, until HSPs master their sensitive nervous systems, they operate in a constant state of overstimulation. Conditions that most of us ignore completely overwhelm the HSP: bright light, loud sounds, and strong smells. More importantly, HSPs are also very sensitive to their internal worlds. They tend to be deeply affected by pain, both emotional and physical. The emotional demands of relationships and inevitable consequences of change often leave them reeling.

If you're a HSP, the most important thing you must learn is how to manage your increased volume of sensory experience, both physical and emotional stimulation. This accessible, practical guide contains strategies that help you master this critical skill. The book starts with a brief description of the highly sensitive person, and then offers a self-examination quiz, which allows you to assess whether you are highly sensitive. Then the book outlines coping techniques specific to the plight of the HSP. You'll learn tips for reducing the influence of provocative sensory experiences, such as excessive light and noise in the home and office. Meditation and relaxation techniques help you to reduce the anxiety caused by heightened sensitivity. Easy-to-follow exercises guide you through the challenges of communicating and interacting with others in both social and intimate relationships.

5 out of 5 stars Non Judgemental, Supportive with Good Suggestions.......2007-08-17

Although this may not be the major work on this topic, this author writes plainly and could even be seen to provide comfort for individuals dealing with high sensitivity. Many students entering adolescence, especially young men, cannot succeed in our large, demanding, overcrowded classrooms and this is the book to give them. Maybe even sit down with them and help them to understand that the combination of what they can control (their diet, amount of intense TV, video games they consume) and what they cannot (school lighting, crowded classrooms, demanding teachers) there is a balance in which they can find success. Highly recommended for parents and teens w/ ADD/ADHD.

5 out of 5 stars EVERTHING I NEED TO KNOW AS A SENSITIVE PERSON IN OUR TENSE WORLD.......2007-08-06

Dr. Zeff has given me the skills I need to manage my sensitivity. His book includes relaxation techniques, getting proper nutrition and exercise for the sensitive person as well as the importance of having adequate "downtime." He shows how to align the mind, body and soul for inner-peace. He also includes practical information for coping at work and in relationships for the HSP. I now realize that I have a choice in life and don't have to be swept away by the currents of our stressed out culture. Thank you Dr. Zeff!

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Book!.......2007-08-03

I really enjoyed reading Ted Zeff's book and found a great deal of practical coping strategies to deal with overstimulation. Since I've begun using many of the techniques in this book I feel less stressed out! I highly recommend this book for all highly sensitive people. Also family and friends of sensitive people would benefit by reading the book to better understand the HSP.

5 out of 5 stars Creating a Greater Sense of Well Being.......2007-07-30

For those who have been successful in creating a sense of well being from our overstimulating world, this book may not offer any thing new.

However, if you just discovered that you are a Highly Sensitive Person and are having trouble coping with the trait, The HSP Survival Guide by Ted Zeff will give you many suggestions on how to start integrating the trait into your daily life. You will learn how to separate yourself from an overstimulating world and create new rituals and habits for a greater sense well being. For that reason, this book is more than helpful - it is necessary.

    2 out of 5 stars Elementary Reading.......2007-06-06

Nothing new here. Basic arithmetic. I'm sure most sensitive people have figured out all of these coping strategies long before reading this book.

    4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2005-10-20

A book filled with recipes and the passages from the books that inspired their creation.

Shaunda Kennedy Wenger is a writer and food lover. Her work has appeared in numerous publications. Her first children's book is about to be published by Richard Owens Publishers. She is also currently writing her first novel, which also contains recipes. Although originally from New Hampshire, she currently resides in Utah with her husband and three children.

Janet Kay Jensen is a speech pathologist. She is a published writer and has won numerous awards. She lives in Utah with her husband and is the mother of three children. She is currently working on her first novel.

This book is filled with over 200 recipes, all inspired by passages in books. There are no photographs in this book, as all book lovers need is an imagination! Some of the exciting chapters contained within this book are: Breakfasts; Main and Side Dishes; Soups; Salads; Appetizers, Breads and Other Finger Foods; Desserts; and, Cookies and Other Sweets.

As a person who enjoys cooking first, and then reading, I found the recipes were mediocre. I think this was a difficult task for the authors, but some of the recipes, I didn't quite imagine that their interpretation of the passage equalled the resulting recipe. I feel like this book is really for, as the title indicates, a book lover's cookbook.

There are some interesting recipes, such as "A King's Bean Salad" inspired by "Little House on the Prairie" by Laura Ingalls Wilder and "Pippi's Orange-Cranberry Muffins" inspired by "Pippi Longstocking" by Astrid Lindgren.

This is a good book that is an excellent gift idea for book lovers that love to cook.

4 out of 5 stars Charming Recipe for Success.......2005-08-12

This unique cookbook combines a passion for books and for cooking. Recipes from literature and related to recognized literary works for adults and children are organized by type (desserts, beverages, etc.) Excerpts that mention the type of food are included and are often familiar passages. In some cases, the author contributed the recipes; in others, it was originally included in the literary work being referenced or comes from elsewhere. It's entertaining to remember or be introduced to the passages, situations and feelings that give rise to the culinary references. And the recipes are practical and easy to make as well. This makes a great gift book.

    5 out of 5 stars The Book Lover's Cookbook.......2005-08-09

Every page of this delightful book is interesting. Snippets of old favorites, new novels, children's stories, and classics are included, along with wonderful recipes from those passages---some of them from the authors themselves. Wonderful quotes about literature are interspersed along with delightful recipes for us foodies who also happen to love books. A perfect combination!

5 out of 5 stars A good read, and good food, too!.......2004-04-28

Who would have thought that actually reading a cookbook could be so much fun? My personal preference leans toward cookbooks that offer more than a collection of recipes and this book delights both readers of the classics and contemporary literature, as well as the enthusiastic cookbook collector. I had the good fortune of meeting authors Shaunda Kennedy Wenger and Janet Kay Jensen in a live chat. I was taken by their lively sense of humor and the fun they expressed they had in assembling the recipes to match the excerpts and quotations used throughout the book.

You'll find plenty of comfort food to enjoy while you read some great stories, or revisit old favorites.

4 out of 5 stars A little gimmicky, but nevertheless quite endearingý.......2003-12-05

I would recommend "The Booklover's Cookbook" as a perfect present for a bookworm who happens to cook (but perhaps not for a cook who happens to read occasionally).

It features 170 recipes with excerpts from various books mentioning that specific food, as well as quotes from authors on writing and books. Some of it seems to be a stretch, but over all the authors did a great job compiling it into this lovely book.

It is very amusing, if anything just to flip through on a slow Saturday afternoon with your friends and reminisce about stories you all read once upon a time (you will definitely hear a lot of "Oh yeah, I remember that book! I read it years ago, when I was in elementary school/just after whats-his-name broke up with me/in college for that horrible lit class/etc, etc"...).

The authors feature a nice variety of different foods spanning eras and book genres - from Ichabod's Slapjacks (The Legend of Sleepy Hollow) to Mr. Casabon's Chicken Noodle Soup (Middlemarch) and Tamales (Like Water for Chocolate). Two recipes I was especially tickled by were the Turkish Delight (The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe) and Not Violet, but Blueberry Pie (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory) - it brought me back to my frustration with Edmund's greediness and of course the excitement shared with Charlie.

"The Booklover's Cookbook" is indeed an endearing book, meant to be shared in order to be truly enjoyed.

4 out of 5 stars Very complete reference.......2007-04-02

This book has a lot of valuable details on years certain options were available, as well as photographs of package art. It has helped me complete some of my sets (just from the photos) as well as identify some of my pieces that I wasn't sure of the origin.

Good reading if you want to relive your childhood!

5 out of 5 stars Another great book by Michael Zarnock.......2007-01-26

I hope Mr. Zarnock does another edition of this book with even more pictures!

    Book Description

Jack Sanders's colorful tribute to wildflowers is bursting with odd facts, ingenious uses, and bizarre superstition about some of North America's most beautiful and common plants. There are more than 10,000 varieties of wildflowers in North America, some rare, some so plentiful that they are designated as invasive weeds. Each has a unique story.
There's Bouncing Bet, a perennial common along the roads and railroad tracks of America. Like many of our most abundant summer wildflowers, Bet was brought over to fill colonial gardens. It's a beautiful plant, but also a useful one. Open up the stalk and its sap makes a fine soap. Colonial beermakers used to put a dab in to help the head on a brew. Doctors used it to wash wounds. Generally considered a weed, it's everywhere.
Or Coltsfoot, which pops up almost alone in winters, and was used in New England as a cure for coughs, the leaves boiled down in water. Asthmatics, Sanders tells us, used to smoke it for relief. For many years, apothecaries in France used Coltsfoot as its symbol, a surprising pedigree for a neglected "weed."
More a companion than a field guide, THE SECRETS OF WILDFLOWERS is a must-have for anyone who enjoys a walk in a meadow or a gaze outside.

This is an essential read for those that want to further explore in an in-depth manner wildflowers of all types. The story telling format blends science and folklore and flows in a pace that is most pleasing to the reader. Highly recommended for those that have any interest in this topic.

5 out of 5 stars Fun read for wildflower fans.......2007-01-06

I have thoroughly enjoyed this book. I photograph wildflowers, and reading these fun, little-known tidbits has been very informative in my research of the flowers.

5 out of 5 stars Little Gem of a Book.......2006-07-31

This is simply a wonderful addition to any library. I was looking for a native wildflower handbook with a little extra, but this surpassed my expectations. You don't need to be a botanist or a naturalist to enjoy this offering. It has tidbits of fascinating information about native U.S. wildflowers, from its history to medicinal uses to mythological lore. The layout is nice and there are many additional artistic touches here and there to make it a pleasure to read.

I guarantee you'll never look at a wildflower the same way after reading this little gem.

    5 out of 5 stars Wildflower Wonders.......2005-08-30

"The Secrets of Wildflowers" by Sanders is phenomenal! I am a naturalist in training and this book has helped me tremendously to find interesting facts to share. I wish there were more out there like this one, but I have just not found them. "The Secrets of Wildflowers" talks about a lot of plants native to North America, which is why it is so special. I can't thank Jack Sanders enough for making my homework a thousand times easier.

    Book Description

For more than a century, critics of the Aeneid have assumed that all or most of its episodes must propound something about Aeneas and his mission to found the Roman people, and through them about Rome and Augustus; whether that is their positive aspects, or their brutality and destructiveness, or the contrast between the public "voice" of their achievements and the private "voice" of the suffering they cause. This book argues that this assumption is wrong; the Aeneid's main purpose was to present a series of emotionally moving episodes, especially pathetic ones. This book shows that the Aeneid makes more sense when regarded primarily as a series of emotion-arousing episodes than as expressing a pro-Aeneas, anti-Aeneas or two voices message. That is how it was regarded into the nineteenth century and that is what the ancient Greeks and Romans assumed was the main purpose of literature.

5 out of 5 stars No scholar of Virgil can afford to neglect this work.......2004-12-05

This work demonstrates that Steven Farron is one of the most extraordinary modern interpreters of Virgil. Challenging conventional wisdom, Farron argues that the Aeneid's main purpose was to present a series of emotionally moving episodes, an argument that accords well with the impression one gets from reading the epic for the first time. Farron brings out the full meaning of the Aeneas/Dido episode in Book 4 and shows how it relates to the work as a whole. No serious scholar of Virgil can afford to neglect this work, and those who have only an indirect, but intelligent interest in Classics, will find themselves caught up in the fascinating world of Latin pathos. Highly recommended.

      Book Description

Kenneth FitzGerald proposes that the objective of design, to create a class of expert professional practitioners, can - and should - only lead to its demise as a specialist profession.

Lorraine Wild and Sam Potts respond, separately, to the publication of Rick Poynor's recent book "No More Rules: Graphic Design and Postmodernism."

Eric Heiman urges designers to "think wrong" and refocus their creative energies to solving non-commercial, more socially motivated problems.

Jeffery Keedy gives us a list of some of the most popular but dumb ideas in design.

Ben Hagon warns that without a significant change in the method by which we create work, Joe Client will, in time, do our graphic design work for us.

Kali Nikitas and Louise Sandhaus respond to the criticism levelled at their conversation "Visitations" which was published in Emigre #64.

And Emigre interviews Armin Vit, the founder of Speak Up, design's most successful blog, and David Cabianca who discusses the value of design theory and criticism.

Plus, the Readers Respond, featuring letters from around the world in response to past issues of Emigre magazine.

      Book Description

From vividly recollected personal experiences, OUT OF THE FRYING PAN is a fresh, personal account of one of the greatest injustices in 20th-century U.S. history. Bill Hosokawa, this country's leading Japanese American journalist, tells how he, his wife, and their infant child were herded into a U.S. World War II relocation camp in Wyoming.

Bringing his narrative into the present, he examines with humor and insight the current place occupied by Japanese Americans in the larger culture of our nation. A searching and insightful memoir from an extraordinary man, OUT OF THE FRYING PAN is a significant statement on race relations in the U.S. today.

      4 out of 5 stars A Biased Review.......2005-08-06

As the son of the author, it is impossible to write an objective review. The author is a retired editor with the Denver Post and a member of the Journalism Hall of Fame. He has written several books on the history of the Japanese Americans in the U.S. This book brings together his stories, perceptions and insights around his experiences prior to and after World War II. It is a "quick read" written in the concise style of a journalist. It is not a victim's story nor a hero's story. It is reporting of little-known events with the personal insights of the author.

      5 out of 5 stars A Fabulous Book With A Great Dialogue!.......2000-04-07

Bill Hosokawa remind us that history must not repeat itself nor be forgotten; that is, placing Japanese Americans in concentration camps during the out break of World War II. "Out of the Frying Pan" explains and exemplifies the true meaning of being an American of Japanese descent, while overcoming racial discrimination in the land of the free. This book must be read by those who believe in the true colors of red, white and blue.
