Serious scholars might disagree, but it seems to at least one amateur Austenite that Stephanie Barron has captured Jane Austen's voice perfectly in her scrupulously researched and scrumptuously written mysteries starring the celebrated English novelist. "There are not many uses for a baronet's daughter, but the steady management of a gentleman's household may safely be described as one of them," Barron writes in the fourth book in this remarkable series, a line that could have been plucked from anywhere in the actual canon. Jane is talking about her sister-in-law Elizabeth, who runs her brother Edward's Godmersham estate in Kent. It's here that Jane comes for a visit in the summer of 1805--and gets caught up not only in a murder mystery but the planned invasion of England by Napoleon, which ended in the Battle of Trafalgar.

Austen, of course, had all the qualities of a good detective: the superb attention to detail, fervid imagination, and salty disdain for pretension. Barron makes excellent use of these attributes, plopping Jane Poirot-like into the middle of a crime at the Canterbury Races, then surrounding her with mysterious and possibly sinister figures involved in aiding or thwarting Napoleon's plans.

The writing, as stylized as it is ("There is nothing like the country for the rapid communication of what is dreadful"), never gets in the way of Barron's carefully plotted story, and in the end most readers will find they've managed to satisfy their appetites both for Austen and for mystery. First-timers will be delighted to hear that the three earlier books in Barron's series (Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor, Jane and the Man of the Cloth, and Jane and the Wandering Eye) are available in paperback. --Dick Adler

Book Description

For everyone who loves Jane Austen...The fourth engaging mystery in the series that recasts the well-loved author as a sleuth!

In the waning days of summer, Jane Austen is off to the Canterbury Races, where the rich and fashionable gamble away their fortunes. It is an atmosphere ripe for scandal—but even Jane is unprepared for the shocking drama that unfolds. A flamboyant French beauty, known for her brazen behavior, is found gruesomely strangled in a shabby chaise. While many urge the arrest of a known scoundrel with eyes for the victim, Jane looks further afield and finds a number of acquaintances behaving oddly.

As rumors spread like wildfire that Napoleon's fleet is bound for Kent, Jane suspects that the murder was an act of war rather than a crime of passion. Suddenly the peaceful fields of Kent are a very dangerous place...and Jane's thirst for justice may exact the steepest price of all—her life.

4 out of 5 stars Early 19th Century Murder She Wrote.......2007-06-22

A 2007 summer reading list mini review.

No one ever confused Jane Austen with Jessica Fletcher. Until now. After reading the first 3 installments of Stephanie Barron's series I had to admit they should both have obituary writers as traveling companions because where these writers go death cannot be far behind.

I had endeavored to read this entry last year, but after a chapter or so, I tired of the series for the above referenced reason. This year I attempted it again and am glad I did so. Jane and the Genius of the Place tells an excellent story melding a good mystery with the social commentary that is Jane Austen. I am glad but if in the fifth mystery she goes to the Americas in search of Cabot Cove, I am through!

4 out of 5 stars Not for everyone.......2006-05-05

The books in this series are a quite well-done pastiche of Jane Austen's style, but they are not easy reading. Unlike other reviewers, I'm afraid that I did not immediately guess how the murder was done in this one, but then I've been picking it up and putting it down for several months. Not being terribly interested in the politics of the Napoleonic wars, I can't say that I always found the details of the plot to be riveting; I enjoyed this book more for its historical detail and insight into the things that were going on in Austen's life, both personally and nationally. It is easy to forget when reading her novels that England was engaged in war with France for a large part of her adult life, and at the time this book takes place was actually in daily expectation of an invasion by Napoleon. There is also some interesting information about the mania for landscaping and "improvement of the estate," which plays an important role in _Mansfield Park_.

One small but entertaining feature of the series is that Barron sprinkles actual quotes from the Austen canon throughout the books (at least this one), which I personally find quite satisfying to catch.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining but less than genius.......2005-02-10

This is the fourth novel in Stephanie Barron's Jane Austen mystery series. Having read the previous three, I already knew what to expect. Barron has a knack for imitating the style of Austen's day and shows a vast array of study into the lifestyles of Austen's time. The fourth novel in the series proves Jane to be as stalwart a detective as ever.

While Jane visits her brother's home of Godmersham, she is inevitably caught up in the tragic events that unfold in Kent. With the news of a possible French invasion looming on the horizon, a high-spirited French woman is found murdered at the horse races. Naturally, suspicion falls on the men who were entangled in her web, and her character and affairs with these men are called into question. But the detective side of Jane suspects that the foul play was due to political motives rather than jealous passions.

Barron introduces a wide cast of characters and suspects, and fully fleshes them out as Jane endeavors to solve another mystery. The novel moves quickly due to Jane's 'journaling' of events, even if at times the story is predictable. "Jane and the Genius of the Place" is a worthy addition and homage to Austen.

1 out of 5 stars Not like Jane Austen.......2003-10-03

Many people seem to enjoy this series very much, but I find this book and the others as mysteries feeble, and as historical fiction unconvincing. The plots are improbable, and characters cardboard. Most annoyingly, Miss Barron has distorted the characters of jane Austen' family until they are unrecognisable, most unkindly of all, she portrays Jane's mother as a raving imbecile. miss Barron is lucky not to be haunted by Mrs. Austen's indignant ghost. If Jane Austen had written mysteries, they would have been a lot better than these. In fact, most mysteries are better than these.

5 out of 5 stars delightful homage wrapped within a mystery.......2002-08-30

There are more than a few literary tragedies -- the burning of the Library at Alexandria and Coleridge's ill-timed caller come to mind -- and among them one must list Cassandra Austen's burning of the majority of her sister Jane's letters. Despite the loss of this treasure trove, Stephanie Barron manages to capture the style and spirit of Miss Jane's lovely prose, and she does so within the framework of cozy murder mysteries. The series is highly entertaining, and this fourth installment is no exception. Though the mystery is fairly transparent (It's easy to figure out what happened, though it takes a while to figure out whodunit), the language is elegant and witty and we learn a lot about Britain's Great Terror, landscaping, horses and even Jane Austen and her family. My next visit to England will definitely include a visit to Godmersham! Though I would appreciate an author's note detailing the fictional status of the characters, I am puzzled by the complaints about learning. When knowledge is gained so painlessly, why would one choose mindless entertainment?

This story takes place near Jane's brother Edward's estate, Godmersham, in Kent, at the time if the Canterbury Races. At first I was disappointed that some of the series' most endearing characters were missing -- Eliza and Sir Harold Trowbridge are only mentioned or appear briefly. I was not as disappointed to have Jane's mother and sister absent, as Cassandra is basically a wet blanket in this series and Mother is very annoying. But I was pleasantly surprised to become better acquainted not only with Jane's brothers Neddie and Henry, but also Neddie's wife Lizzy and daughter Fanny. These characters are a lot of fun, and scenes of the family gathering to try and reason out matters are particularly engaging. I agree with the reviewer who said that Julian Sothey's devotion to Anne Sharpe did not seem justified, but otherwise thought that the characters here were quite engaging and beautifully drawn.

In addition to being historically accurate, Ms. Barron takes pains to incorporate real events from Jane Austen's experience into the story, and if you also have a copy of Jane Austen's Letters, you will be delighted to read those from the same time period and find the correspondence (so to speak) between events real and fictional.

One trusts Miss Jane would approve.

3 out of 5 stars Hard to judge.......2006-11-12

This book both suffers and blossoms in what readers have come to expect from Diana. I'm an avid reader of her work and, like most of her books, I found it distressingly hard to get into the story at first. Many characters are introduced all at once, with a bunch of ideas and storylines all getting thrown together. It takes almost a hundred pages before you can get comfortable with what you're reading, and by the time you ARE comfortable, you can't put it down. This book was no different - a crazy idea, that every major disaster to ever happen to Earth was done on purpose by a group of mages in another universe studying us to see what we'll do.

Diana's best strong point, in my opinion, is her ability to make a character instantly charming, and allow the reader to enthusiastically follow their line throughout the story. I think this book might have suffered a bit in that she couldn't decide WHICH character she liked the most, although it was clear to my mind which one I preferred. (Zillah, for anyone that's interested)

So, a hundred or so pages of painstaking reading to get into it, then 250 more pages or so of fluid story that fits well together, then the characteristic Jones ending of flushing everything together really quickly, adding some points, and making everything much more complicated then it really needs to be. But that's ok right - any previous reader of her work has come to expect an ending like that by now! I'd almost feel disappointed if it changed. With Diana, it's the JOURNEY that's the most important part, and then a general feel-good ending where the bad guy gets it and the good guy gets the girl and everyone's happy. Something was just...missing for this story though. For me, it was because my favorite character ended up with a guy that was not appealing at all, that Diana spent the entire book practically talking DOWN. And then the heroine ends up with him? Yuck!

Very interesting story once you get into it, I couldn't put it down all day. Too many characters to keep track of in my opinion, I was only able to really understand about 10 of them before I was too muddled to care, which is unfortunate. I wouldn't recommend it to a first time Diana reader, but someone who is familiar with her work will definately be able to appreciate it! I give it 3 stars instead of 4 because the love story didn't work out how I wanted it to. ;)

5 out of 5 stars An Intercontinual Intrusion.......2004-01-21

A Sudden Wild Magic is an independent fantasy novel. In a universe like ours, but in which magic is potent, the Ring oversees the mages and witches of Great Britain. The head of the Inner Ring begins to suspect covert external influence in recent history. He tests his suspicions with great care to avoid detection and then takes his evidence to another member of the Inner Ring for advice.

In this novel, Mark Lister travels to Hereford to consult with Gladys, the old women in the Inner Ring. After a bit of confusion over his purpose, they visit a dreadfully injured young women in the local hospital and hear an incoherent story. The evidence brought by Mark and the young woman's story lead them to believe that the external influence is coming from another universe. After dreaming of the intruders, Mark and Gladys gather Amanda and Maureen, the other two members of the Inner Ring, and determine a plan to invade the hostile base and eliminate the interference.

Zillah is Amanda's sister. Some time before, she had an affair with Mark and had a young son, Marcus, by him, but now the two are estranged. However, Zillah still loves Mark and decides to stow away on the assault vehicle to separate Marcus and herself from Mark. She soon finds herself in an unexpectedly strange environment.

The High Head of All Horns and King's Vicar on Arth is the head honcho of the observation base watching our universe. The Arth garrison is out of favor back in the Pentarchy. When the High Head inspects the latest batch of servicemen, he finds them to be a lot of odds and sods, with only the spoiled son of the Pentarch of Frinjen, a throwback of a gualdian, and a knock-kneed centaur standing out in the rabble.

When the converted bus used as an intercontinual assault vehicle arrives in the target universe, many of the inhabitants have been unexpectedly killed, leaving six women and Marcus, and their weapons have been short-circuited and made useless. They are rescued by the Arth garrison, who don't really know what to do with them. Despite their disastrous start, the remaining commandos decide to carry on and soon begin to disrupt the routine of the male garrison. Zillah inadvertently gets Tod, the Pentarch's son, banished to Earth and she is forced to flee from capture with Philo the gualdian and Josh the Centaur. Then strange things begin to happen to the Arth fortress itself.

This story describes the defense of our universe against a subtle and powerful interference from the outside The lady commandos strike back directly against Arth, the forward base, and Gladys finds another way to influence the outsiders. Meanwhile, infiltrators from Arth are trying to pierce the veil of secrecy placed around the Ring's operations.

Highly recommended for Jones fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of daring and magic with more than a touch of intrigue.

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge a Book. . ........2003-04-18

I love Diana Wynne Jones' work, but I actually avoided reading this book for YEARS because of the cover. The pastel color scheme and curly pink title script just seemed to repel my hand every time I encountered it on the shelf. I finally got around to reading it, though, and I loved it. It is set in the same universe as *Deep Secret* but I'm pretty sure it was written before that book, so the universe is not as well-articulated. I would have liked to know more about some of the characters, but otherwise it was a rollicking good read. It follows, among other things, a handful of witches out to sabotage a pocket universe full of celibate men (hilarity ensues), in order to save the earth from global warming (among other things).

If you already like D.W. Jones' books, don't miss this one. If you've never read any of her books, you might do better to start with *Deep Secret* or the Chrestomanci books. And if you pick up a copy with the pink title and pale aqua-colored book jacket, don't be misled-- it's still a good book.

2 out of 5 stars Not her best fare.......2001-12-14

Definitely not her best work but an easy read. I wish she'd get back to her chrestomanci/fire & hemlock books, don't you?

5 out of 5 stars diana wynne jones rocks.......2000-08-17

ok, maybe not 'rocks' but writes incredibly good novels. maybe not so good short stories, but when there is the time to fully develop a concept and then provide the most impossible yet believable answer to it, Jones rocks. she fully engages you with her universes and the people who run it, and this book will leave you crying to know what happens after the crisis has been resolved. her descriptions of how magic can be harnessed are so visual and tangible, and she also brings out the humour in high tension situations superbly. do read it, soon.

Well bound and with hearty paper stock, this book is made for the cook who wants to try some of the best Island recipes without having to learn how to dig a pit for Kalua pork. Sam has taken some of his best recipes, his old standards, from poke to sweet and sour (mmm!), his opah and his spicy soups, and placed them into one very easy to use book.
Again, Sam's at his best when he is explaining what the ingrediants and preparation process is, as well as giving lively history and substiution ingrediants for those of us without a nearby market. The back even has some ingrediant stores to get supplies from.
There's no downside to this book, other than than you could spend $... on his other books (some of which are fantastic- Seafood and poke for example) to get some of the best recipes which are all compiled in one easy to use place.
The recipes are all gems, which happens when you cull over 500 recipes into his best and easiest 80. If you could only buy one Hawaiian cookbook, this would be the one. And then you need to save up to buy some of his other cookbooks. It is a wonderful gift, and I am buying another to give to my island hungry friends.

      Well Done, Sam, Very ono!

I bought this book while in Hawaii and immediatly made three dishes. All were wonderful. Not only did I love them, but my kids did too. Fancy finding a salad dressing that will get a six-year-old to gobble up his salad!!. The Huli Huli Chicken and Sweet and Sour Pork are worth the price of the book. I am so impressed that I will buy another Sam Choy cookbook. By the way, his restaurant in Kona is great as well!

        Book Description

This sumptuous new book brings together some of the most priceless national treasures in China, housed in Beijing's royal palace complex, the Forbidden City, and collected by Emperor Qianlong. During his sixty-year reign, from 1736 to 1795, Qianlong not only managed what was then the richest empire in the world, but also amassed the largest collection of art known at that time in China. Providing an introduction to the life at the emperor's palaces, and offering a comprehensive view of imperial art during Qianlong's reign, Splendors of China's Forbidden City is the only work in any Western language devoted exclusively to the court arts of China in the mid-eighteenth century, their last golden age. Many of the objects depicted have never previously been published, and include paintings on canvas, silk and paper, sculptures, palace furnishings, musical instruments, ceremonial clothing, arms and armour, table services and jewellery. This book offers an unprecedented insight into one of the most glittering courts in world history.

It is rather unfortunate that such a wonderful book has too small pictures. In some pictures one can hardly see the fine details of the pictures which are described in the accompanying text.

3 out of 5 stars Not about the Forbidden City .......2005-01-04

This book is the companion piece to a traveling art exhibit, with a pompous biography of a glorious chinese emperor. There are precious few pictures of the forbidden city, and no comprehensive map. And of the famous emperor, who was comparable to Louis XIV in his lavish spending, his development of culture and arts, and longevity, there is only one portrait. The book is poorly composed, not comprehensive, and worth checking out from the library, but not purchasing. And it definitely is not about the Forbidden City. Lastly, I was disappointed and have tried to understand this Chinese trandsliteration system, but the book gives one no clue as to how to pronounce "Qianlong" In Enlish, Q never occurs without a U following it, and is a K sound. So is it Kianlong? or Shianlong or Chianlong? Another great example is the grand dowager empress Cixi. How would you prononunce that? Sixy? Well, turns out it's more like Tsu-tsi. The only thing to recommend this book is the photos, but a very poor compilation.

        5 out of 5 stars A one of a kind treasure........2004-08-26

Splendors of China's Forbidden City: The Glorious Reign of Qianlong is a marvelous work of art in and of itself. Splendors is published to coincide with the special exhibition of the same name currently being held by Chicago's Field Musuem that is set to run until the first week of September, 2004. The book, like the exhibit, is very well done and contains the only published photographs of the objects featured in the exhibit, making this book an extremely rare resource as photography is prohibited in the actual exhibit. These objects have never been publicly displayed in China, so aside from attending the exhibition yourself, this book is your only opportunity to view the the collection that Emperor Qianlong amassed throughout his reign. The book is not, however, simply a catalogue for the exhibition, but features wonderful commentary that gives great insight into the political, religious, and cultural tides of Qianlong's reign. It is the only book of its kind to be published in the English language. As a lover of art and literature, Qianlong himself would be quite pleased with the content of this work.

China's Emperor Qianlong (1736 - 1795) is remembered for many reasons, not the least of which is the priceless collection of treasures which he amassed during his 60 year reign. Now, a number of these stunning objects are presented in this volume, many of them seen for the first time. All bring forth gasps of astonishment and pleasure. Paintings, sculptures, furnishings, armor, and, yes, clothing, glitter and glow in unmatched opulence.

To leaf through this book is to experience an unprecedented view of the Chinese court during its golden age. Included is a towering (six foot high) Buddhist stupa, fashioned entirely of gold. Through this collection life is seen as it once was inside the Forbidden City.

During his day Emperor Qianlong headed what was then the world's richest empire. Today we are the beneficiaries of his acquisitiveness and taste.

Published in association with Chicago's Field Museum, "Splendors of China's Forbidden City" is a treasure in itself.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful in Many Aspects.......2004-03-24

This must be one of the most beautiful book that I have ever come acrossed. The cover is very imposing and impressive with the portrait of the Emperor Qian Long, the 4th emperor of the Ching Dynasty. The book contains wonderful history about the rise of the Manchurians and how they replaced the Ming Dynasty in the 17th century A.D.

In this book it discuss the origins of the Manchurian and where they originated from and how they ascended the imperial throne of China and ruled over a nation with the largest human population of their time. A country that has been known for its inventions and a long history dating back to early beginning of Chinese civilization.

This book talks about the Emperor Qian Long and the reign that brought China prosperity and peace. The centuries before that, relations between the Han Chinese and the Manchurians were a little bit unstable. However during Qian Long's reign the country became stable. The country prospered, the relations been the Han Chinese and the Manchurian wasn't as much strained. There are wonderful photographs of robes and jewellry worn by the empror and his wives and family members. Also sections talk about traditions that were Manchurian and others that were created through generations like the wearing of triple earrings by the women. The large headdresses worn by the Manchurian court ladies and the emperor's wives, princesses etc... which in the beginning weren't even of Manchurian origin that has become part of a iconic tradition often associated with the Ching Dynasty. The dragon robe worn by the emperor and the long queues kept by Emperor and the Han Chinese subjects were made to conform to practice which became the stereo type associated with the West in regards to the Chinese.

The book also talks about the private lives of the Emperor Qian Long and his wives and also day to day business and affairs. There are so many artifacts that belonged to Qian Long like his own personal things like brushes, ink stone, wooden lacqured screens, throne, and crockery as well as gold and silver utinsels used by him when dining.

The information was vast in book and who can ever get bored reading it. Each page I turn it gets more interesting. From the personal life through to the day to day business affairs etc... The book contains wonderful collection of paintings and also a few old photographs of the imperial residences before the turn of the 20th century. This is a lovely book even though its a little bit bigger than most books and a little bit more heavier. However its guaranteed that its worth while too to have a look and have a read in regards to one of the great rulers of Chinese history.

Do I prune my hydrangea in the fall or do I wait until early spring?
When is it safe to put out tomatoes?

If you have ever asked yourself questions like these, Month-by-Month Gardening in The Carolinas is for you. Gardening is a journey, not a destination. The day-by-day gardening experiences - planting a few onion sets in the first warm afternoon of spring… the surprises - a purple crocus before the snow has even gone … the satisfaction - fresh green beans on the dinner table, or tomatoes, bright and red, safely in quart jars … these are the things that keep the gardener coming back year after year.

Month-by-Month Gardening in The Carolinas is packed with information that explains what needs to be done and when it needs to be done in the Carolina garden. Topics include:

Whatever your gardening interests or the time of year, you can take the guesswork and mystery out of gardening. You will become a more satisfied gardener … and your garden will show it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Garden Therapy.......2001-05-15

GROWING WITH GARDENING is an excellent book to use when working with a group for garden/horticulture therapy. I am an Activity Director in a nursing home and have found this book full of ideas and guidance with what types of plants to plant, how to use them in programs including crafts, when to plant, how to prune and propagate, as well as other projects related to gardening. The book has step by step instructions to build a wheelchair accessible planter and to make a simple flower press. There are lists of supplies related to budget and ways to adapt the program to various ages and abilities. I have found this book has provided me with a wealth of new ideas to expand my residents gardening experiences.

5 out of 5 stars If you only buy one book on desktop publishing, this is it........1998-01-21

Don't judge THIS book by its cover. The cover designer managed to violate several of the carefully-explained rules author Lichty elaborates in this lucid text. The discussions of fonts, typography and page layout are clear to beginners and professionals alike, and written and illustrated with considerable wit. Profusely illustrated with both good and bad examples, this slim text ends each chapter with a bibliography to help the reader who needs more detailed information. Minor quibbles: the author's use of high-end Aldus Pagemaker and Quark XPress for exercises slights the users of lower-priced desktop publishing software; some examples using Microsoft Publisher would be welcome. And the author inexplicably omits all of Edward Tufte's seminal books on visual communications from his bibliographies. But if you can only buy one book on desktop publishing, this is the one to have.
