Book Description
When the governor of New Mexico is found drowned in the Bath House at Jemez Springs, Albuquerque private eye Sonny Baca is called in to investigate. As he soon learns, murder is only the beginning of the evil that Sonny must sort out. Someone has planted a bomb in the Valles Caldera, not far from the Los Alamos National Laboratories, and it is set to detonate in just a few hours. Is this the work of terrorists or is Sonny's old nemesis, Raven, mixed up in the plot?
In a race against the clock Sonny encounters ghosts and sorcerers, beautiful women and environmental activists, and developers and politicians who are quarreling over the state's most precious resource, its water.
"An extraordinary storyteller."Los Angeles Times Book Review
"Anaya takes the reader beyond detective fiction. . . . His mysteries fall into the criminal and the spiritual, which makes them both inspiring and electrifying."St. Petersburg Times
"Sonny Baca is a fascinating hero with rough edges that serve to add to his charismatic personality."Edmonton Journal
"Anaya, godfather and guru of Chicano literature, proves he's just as good in the murder mystery field."Tony Hillerman, author of The Sinister Pig
Rudolfo Anaya's latest Sonny Baca mystery eerily reflects current events: it involves terrorists, environmental activists, and water rights in the Southwest.

No Better Way to End a Career.......2005-10-23
With Jemez Spring, Rudolfo Anaya brings to a close his quartet of novels centered on the literate and spiritual private investigator, Sonny Baca. All the elements of a great hayride are present. First, we have a corpse. But not just any dead body. Sonny is beckoned to crack the mystery behind the death of New Mexico's governor whose bloated, half-cooked body is found in the Bath House at Jemez Springs.
Second, we have something worse than a dead governor: someone (al-Qaeda?) has planted a bomb in the Valles Caldera, not far from Los Alamos National Laboratories, where it apparently is set to blow in just a few hours.
Third, enter the crooked politicians and greedy developers who might be behind the murder and bomb in order to secure water rights and make a fortune. And the evil, powerful Raven (Sonny's nemesis and polar opposite) might be mixed up in all this, too. Finally, there's a troubled love interest: Sonny and Rita adore each other but she is healing (emotionally and physically) from a miscarriage and needs space.
But Jemez Spring is not your typical mystery. We can't forget that this is Anaya's world. So, in addition to the murder and ticking bomb, the mystical otherworld is as real as anything else. Sonny enjoys extended dialogues with the spirit of his late mentor, don Eliseo. Sonny also wears the powerful Zia medallion which Raven desperately wants to possess. Sonny's one-eyed dog, Chica, dreams which eventually leads to a heated and protracted debate in the community. Even a group of European intellectuals debate the question of the dreaming dog in a hilarious send-up of ivory tower literary analysis: "But you can't deconstruct folk memory! Does the dog wag the tail, or the tail wag the dog? You are going in circles. The essence of the dog dream lies in the artist as myth-maker. Which leads directly to the myth of Aztlán and its use as an identity in the Weltanschauung of the Chicano." You can almost hear Anaya laughing as his "intellectual" character spouts such pretentious and overwrought opinions.
Included with all this are Anaya's poetic and loving descriptions of New Mexico mixed in with plenty of digressions on religion, politics, sex and culture. Anaya's characters are fully-realized portraits, people we see and know. Sonny Baca couldn't have asked for a better way to end his career. But he'll be sorely missed.

Jemez Spring.......2005-05-23
A tale that will appeal to any reader with an interest in the American Southwest and its culture, both past and present. Not just a mystery, but a tale of supernatural, myth, and cultural history. Sonny Baca is drawn into amurder of ther governor of New Mexico when his body is found in a tub at the Jemez Springs and four black feathers are found with him. His enemy, The Raven, is back. Sonny communes with the ghost of Don Eliseo, his mentor, who accompanies him and Chica, the dreaming dog, into the investigation. A fascinating read from the beginning through Sonny's encounter with The Raven to the last pages. In Jemez Spring the reader will step off the edge of what we call reality into a world where many things we do not understand lurk, places consigned to myth and superstition by modern man, yet known to the older generations and considered as part of their world. Do they exist or not? To answer that question, I recommend settling into a comfortable chair and taking the tour of Jemez Spring with Sonny and Chica. This is a multi-layered mystery with a case of well drawn characters, a great comgination of the old and the new. Enjoy the adventure. I certainly did.
A disappointed faithful Anaya reader........2005-03-31
Who among us dares dispute that Professor Rudolfo Anaya's words flow with the poetic cadence of a pristine clear New Mexico mountain stream? That fact, he is guilty of! Just as he is equally guilty of perpetrating a disservice to Sonny Baca--his fictitious character who has served him well during the first three excellent novels. Jemez Spring utilizes this final Baca tome as a vehicle to extol a personal vendetta/cause as well as demonstrate his command of stimulating prose and history of long-dead cultures.
There are times when an author belches forth far too many meaningless words and details unrelated to the tale being told--that not only are they distracting--they border on nonsense and are disruptive.
Without an actual count, it is estimated that sixty-percent of pages are devoted to a number of subjects other than those that directly relates to Sonny Baca's current dilemma: The creeping and steady erosion of land and culture of the people of the southwest--which I personally sympathize with; throughout the book the reader is also subject to a number of unrelated ancient history lessons from exotic places; and while I've never been accused of being a prude--the professor emeritus' constant reference to sexual innuendo was excessive, unrelated, and unnecessary in this reader's opinion.
With approximately forty-percent of pages devoted to Sonny's final adventure--he is surely obliged to consider authoring PI Sonny Baca a make-up novel. A novel totally devoted to the adventure. One that Anaya owes those he terms, faithful readers, and Sonny.
Jemez Spring Weaves Hispanic Ideas into Universal Culture.......2005-03-18
JEMEZ SPRING is the fourth in a series about detective Sonny Baca and his quest to catch Raven, who is forever doing something horrible--this time threatening to set off a nuclear device in the Jemez Mountains of New Mexico. The story could become just another catch-him-before-he-blows-us up loaded with chase scene. But in Rudolfo Anay's hands, JEMEZ SPRING becomes much more. While solving crimes, Sonny Baca also discovers a lot about his Hispanic roots. He uses this heritage to help in the fight against Raven. Therefore, we as readers learn about the stories, songs, food, values, and ideas that make New Mexico Hispanics--well, New Mexico Hispanics as opposed to someone else. And not only that!! Mr. Anaya skillfully connects that heritage to Greek and Roman myths; and Native American stories. In this gentle way, he reminds us that no matter who we think we are, or who we think we might be better (or worse) than, we are really all one. We all need to survive, to love, and to achieve. Anay's stories show us that we all try to figure out how to do that. He also reminds us that storytelling is more than entertainment. Stories transmit our values to the next generation. That's what I loved best about JEMEZ SPRING. Mr. Anaya also used the story to play with reality. As Sonny tries to guess what Raven will do with his bomb, Sonny becomes more and more afraid of Raven. He imagines so many possibilities that soon, he isn't sure which are real, which might become real, and which are completely off the wall. Don't we all go through that once in a while. The two layers together make Raven something more than the run-of-the-mill outlaw, and Sonny Baca more than the average detective. What they become I will not say, because that's up to the reader. But I will say that JEMEZ SPRING is a good read. Enjoy.
Book Description
At the dawn of creation, Lucifer ignited the fires of rebellion. Now, after an eternity, the gates of Hell are broken and the angels of the abyss walk the Earth once more. In the so-called City of Angels, a terrible earthquake sparks three days and nights of rioting, and tales of the end of the world. The Devil himself walks the burning streets of Los Angeles. Answering the clarion call, demons congregate in the modern Babylon, searching for answers and for blood. This anthology features ten different tales of horror and apocalypse.

Preposterous!.......2006-03-03
Don't get me wrong, it's a good book. The stories are an excellent compliment to the trilogy of the Fallen. I just can't believe anyone asking over $10 for an RPG fiction, out-of-print or not! Don't waste your time or money with price gougers. Check out www.DriveThruRPG.com for downloadable PDF files taken directly from scans of the novel itself. At a fraction of the cost of the original cover price, you'll get the stories in a printable format, and still be able to afford groceries!
Wow.......2006-01-26
All I have to say is that each story is elaborate and well written. Truly a wonderful purchase for anyone who is a fan of Old World Of Darkness, especially Demon: The Fallen. This is a must have collectible. Very rare. If you see it for any price below $100 dollars, buy then. I have seen it as high as $600 dollars. It's worth every penny.
Demons in Los Angeles.......2003-03-24
Having lived in the Los Angeles area, this was kind of a fun book for me. The stories were interesting and followed a loose kind of plot about demons interacting with humans following a disaster. Although each story had a different author (and some of the writing was a little uneven), they flowed into each other.. In general, I enjoyed this book and so did my teen-age daughter.

Great pedometer book.......2007-10-09
When I bought this book, I knew nothing about pedometers or their uses. This is a really good book. I highly recomend it. Well worth the money.
It's So Simple.......2007-09-23
My first thought when I saw this book was, " what a stupid book -who needs a book about how to operate a pedometer." My curiosity about what the book might entail made me open the first few pages and read a bit. I was pleasantly surprised by the words on the page. This is definitely a good book for people who are at or below the basic level of fitness and want to get started doing something to improve their health.
There is really nothing simpler than putting on a pedometer and letting it count your steps, and the book doesn't explain pedometers as much as the concept of walking your way to fitness with the aid of a pedometer. There is a nice list of resources at the back of the book, as well as some suggestions about what pedometer to purchase. There are a few more than 6 chapters but, basically, this is a 6-week program that is designed to increase your steps per day up to 10,000. The author shows you creative ways to achieve your step goal (although not all of them are practical, especially if you live in a large, sprawling city or an inner city neighborhood with limited walking spaces). Overall, I enjoyed the book and found it easy to read and very informative. The book is primarily for beginners/those not interested in high-impact activities and will get you interested enough to try and walk your way to health.
Good - but not a great deal of 'meat' to chew on.......2007-09-13
This is a good book to get enthusiastic about walking to stay fit and lose weight. However it must be said that the book does stretch out the "limited" content quite a bit. I read this in one evening and was motivated to replace the pedometer that I had purchased and to get walking each and everyday. I will have to see if the 10'000+ steps a day have any long lasting weight loss effects...
Good, informative book, especially for beginners.......2007-06-08
I have been walking daily for years now, and I have been using a pedometer for a few months. I read the book once I was already familiar with pedometer walking, so a lot of the information in it was not new to me. Still, some of the tips in the book were useful and I especially liked the list of additional resources at the end of the book. I think the book would be even more useful for beginners. It helps select a good pedometer, use it accuratly, determine how much one is normally walking and improving one's total number of weekly steps. It seems to assume one is still struggling to build up to 10,000 steps per day and most of its tips are given to reach that goal. This was a bit annoying for me, since I was already walkin that much when I started reading the book, but I was still able to use some of the information to further increase my total steps. I strongly reccomend the book for beginners and I think some more experienced walkers might also find it useful.
A good starter........2007-05-18
I bought it for my mom along with a pedometer. Seems an easy read with sensible, easy-to-follow directions. Too bad it doesn't do the walking for her.

Authentic Cooking.......2000-02-03
Most Americans think of Chicken Parmessan, Alfredo sauce or Italian salad dressing when they hear Italian cooking. As an American soldier stationed in Italy I've never seen either of the above. They are all American inventions.
Italian cooking is very diversified. Venice is big on fish and seafood while the inland areas eat more meats. Jeff Smith's book is as close to authentic Italian cooking as one can get. The sheer number of recipes alone will give a person an insight of how Italian cuisine influenced modern American food.
The amazing thing is that there is at least one recipe that I wanted to try that I couldn't find all the ingridients for. It called for a Sicilian wine and being stationed near Venice I couldn't find it in any of the local wine stores. Great book. I will continue to use it for years after I come back to the US. It will remind me of the years that I spent here.
Great book for neophyte Italian cooks........1998-06-28
As an Italian tired of Olive Garden-fare Italian cuisine, I bought Smith's book with two ideas in mind: 1) I wanted to understand both the context of the dishes I hoped to prepare and the constituent ingredients (for instance, how is Parmesan-Reggiano made?) and 2) coming to the book with little previous cooking experience -- let alone Italian cooking -- I wanted to be able to prepare most of the dishes in the book. Smith's book excelled at both these. The book is well-written and easy to follow, but avoids pedantry. Some of my favorite recipes are: Italian peasant bread, Italian Rolled Chicken, Bracciole, and the Fresh Tomato Sauce Sicilian.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book!.......2006-01-02
Everyone with a parrot really needs to know how to communicate and train their companion bird. It will benefit everyone concerned. This book is excellent and easy to follow. My amazon loves to put his rings on spindle, wave hello while saying hello on cue, puts quarters in piggy bank, high five, and more. I learned how to teach him these tricks through practicing the guidelines in this book.
One of THE Best On Parrot Training!.......2001-05-14
This book, the third by Bonnie Doane, is a must for the new parrot owner or for those who have had a parrot for many years. I found this book to be an excellent guide when I first got my new parrot. I made sure I researched every book I could when I first acquired my two-week old baby parrot, and this book was one of my favorites. I found it very helpful in the training & learning process of handling my parrot as it matured and got older. There are chapters on obedience skills and training techniques for adult parrots, as well as how to work with baby birds, speech training, and trick training. There are 12 chapters filled with helpful advice that you should definitely be aware of.
I highly recommend this book. You should check out her other two books, "My Parrot, My Friend" and "The Parrot in Health and Illness." These are excellent books for your bird-related library in my opinion.
A first rate guide.......2001-04-05
This is an excellent book on the behaviour and training not only of parrots, but also macaws, cockatoos, budgerigars and other members of the parrot family. I have a 3 year old Hyacynth Macaw called Gervaise who has benefited enormously from my purchase. He never ceases to amaze me with his intelligence and agility. He is building up an impressive vocabulary and can do tricks like ringing a bell and eating seeds from my bumcrack. The fun's not all Gervaise's - as the title suggests, their company really does provide the owner with a great deal of pleasure, and this book can really enhance that pleasure.
A good start!.......2001-03-09
This book is very well written and can easily be used as a reference guide as well. This book lacks only in one aspect (colour photos) of actual birds since I love to look at pictures almost as much as reading the information. I would recomend this book to anyone thinking of getting a bird or someone who already has one and is acting up a bit. I haven't adopted a bird as of yet but it's only days away. (I can't wait to get the Umbrella Cockatoo home). A really great site (except it is a little negative but very informative to future Parrot owners is http://members.citynet.net/skydiver/parrots/parrots.htm. Check it out . I looked online for two months to make sure that I was picking the right bird for our family and everything you need to know is right there or there's links to it.

Book Description
This comprehensive guide addresses one of the most common problems for gardeners. Shade Gardening has over 250 color photographs of the 350 best trees, shrubs, annuals, perennials, bulbs, ground covers, vines, ferns, and grasses for shaded areas. Articles cover the basics of growing plants in the shade as well as such subjects as city gardens, flowers, foliage plants, pests and diseases, and lawns.
Customer Reviews:
Gardening.......2005-08-25
Provides lots of interesting gardening information if you are planting only trees and shrubs. Book does not detail anything for vegetable gardeners. Title should be changed to include the word "Forestry" rather than the broad term 'gardening".
Very helpful handbook.......2005-02-07
This is a great reference for those gardening in shade. It is organized in a logical format and can be easily used. The photos are nice and the information helpful as plants are considered for a shade garden. While it may not be adequate for those gardening in the deep south, it is very well suited to zones 5,6, and 7.
A must have.......2002-06-22
This wonderful little book (thick, but only 4.27" wide) is an absolute necessity for anyone who wishes to do some gardening in a shady area. In fact, this book is really three books rolled into one. The first section looks at shade and shade gardening, it is straightforward and highly informative. The second section is entitled The Color Plates, and gives a long list of shade-loving plants, including a very nice color picture, and a highly informative description. The third section goes hand-in-hand with the second, and gives more in-depth information.
This book is really great, a must have for those of us who wish to do some gardening in a shady area. I highly recommend this book to all gardeners!
Great idea book with pictures of shade lovers.......2001-03-22
The Taylor's Guides are very reliable sources for gardening information and great pictures, and the Shade Gardening Guide is one of the best. Shade gardening is difficult for many reasons. There are not that many very showy flowers for seasons other than Spring, and there are many types of shade. The descriptions are very specific and helpful: light shade, dappled shade, "the more shade, the less moisture is needed," and so on. The soil and shade descriptions for each plant are excellent and detailed.
Although the plants are listed alphabetically for the cultural requirements, the pictures are listed by groups: trees, shrubs, perennials, annuals, summer bulbs, ground covers, vines, grasses, and ferns. I would recommend that people using the book for plant selection read the "Encyclopedia of Plants" part as well as the brief but good descriptions with the color pictures.
Keep in mind too that the flowering times are primarily for New England (zone 5). Furthur South you may get earlier and more flowers. For example, Ceratostigma is listed as an Autumn bloomer, while in PA, it blooms from July through October. So you get more than the book suggests. Not bad. Anyone with shade should experiment with the plants in this book. As a gardening professional, I see so many great and underused plants listed and described in this book.
Not a good resource for Southern gardeners.......2000-09-09
Having recently purchased a condo in Houston with a north-facing porch, I eagerly awaited delivery of this book. However, I was quickly disappointed. This book should be titled "Shade Gardening in the North," since virtually all of the plants listed are for Zones 5 and lower...not much help for my Zone 9 garden. It did contain a couple of pages of information for shade gardening in the South (which they consider to be North Carolina!), but I was really looking for specific information on the types of shade plants I could plant here. This would have been a great book if I lived in Ohio, but not so good for us Texans.

Mexican Blackletter
ASIN: 1568981252 |
Book Description
Blackletter type, also known as Fraktur or German Gothic, originated ?with Gutenberg's moveable type, and was based on the contemporary ?calligraphy of that time. From the sixteenth century on, it shared the ?spotlight with roman type in German-speaking countries and was even ?adopted for the printing of Martin Luther's writings. Yet by the ?twentieth century it was increasingly spurned by both commercial ?artists, who embraced roman type for its classical associations, and ?modernist designers, who championed sanserif type for its universal and ?democratic qualities. At the close of the Second World War, the ?identification of blackletter with failed Nazi ideology was inescapable, ?thus effectively ending the four-hundred-year tradition of blackletter ?as a distinctive national script.?
?The essays in Blackletter investigate the rise and fall of blackletter ?type, examining its uses and cultural significance at various points ?throughout history, including the Reformation, the Weimar Republic, the ?Nazi regime, and the post-Berlin Wall period. This title, illustrated ?with numerous color examples of blackletter typefaces and their ?implementation, is a necessity for anyone interested in the history of ?type.?

Book Description
W.E.B. Du Bois was one of the leading activist men of letters in 20th-century America. Du Bois organized, protested, laid out programs, petitioned, and raised questions of long-term strategy and short-term tactics. He wrote detailed scholarly investigations, Souls of Black Folk and Black Reconstruction among them, as well as popular current articles. He was a commanding speaker and a prodigious correspondent. And yet, it was not until the 1980s that his complete writings became available. The World of W.E.B. Du Bois was created to provide a short journey through his views on virtually all aspects of 20th-century life. More than 1,000 quotations from his published writings and correspondence are provided. These are grouped into 19 topical and one miscellaneous chapter. Each quote begins with a heading designed to summarize the main sense of the quotation. A subject index provides additional access to the ideas of this complex figure. Essential reading for all involved in American race relations and intellectual history and American and Black Studies.
