How to Make In-law Heaven in Hernia Pennsylvania. Wedding Recipes to Die In (and For). .......2006-10-26
With JUST PLAIN PICKLED TO DEATH, # 4 in the PenDutch mystery series, Tamar's humor had been honed to a pitch of pith. And her ability to twist perceptions into literary liquorice sticks had been pinned down like a tickling tack. Her skill of anchoring Sheriff Stoltzfus's leaps-to-conclusions had now become legendary, as again his socket-swivel-eyes saw Magdalena Yoder as the murderer of every dead body which turned up on her premise. The opening murder this time was her dead cousin Sarah Weaver, stashed in a barrel of sour kraut. Pickling for 20 years provided a unique corpse and even more unique sleuthing slithers.
Sarah's pickle-barrel home had been delivered to the PenDutch Inn as a wedding gift from Aaron's father, and the fun took on a feverish romp from that point on as Magda's large feet leaped every hurdle heaved into the path of her march to her wedding night as a 46-year-old bride.
It's amazing how much humor Myers can bubble into the seriousness of an Amish-Mennonite heritage, while giving interesting insights into that background, insights of which I had no clue. This time she explained where the words, Amish and Mennonite originated and differentiated. And, I particularly enjoyed the way Magda related to her fiancé Aaron Miller, a handsome (Mennonite) "devil" who actually volunteered to fight in Vietman in the 70's (Mennonites are pacificist, as explained with various types of historic and preferential background, in each of Myers's novels).
Recently having read and reviewed THE DARK SIDE OF HEAVEN, Tamar's latest novel, a feather-light literary offering, rich in character depth and plot significance, I've become increasingly aware of the versatility of writing style contrasts between this author's 2 highly prized mystery series (see my Listmanias on both) and that recent serious novel which has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. (See my review and Customer Forums on Amazon's buying page for THE DARK SIDE OF HEAVEN).
Returning to observations of Myers signature humor at its height, I all but leaped out of my easy chair and danced a jig at the way Magda dealt with Aaron's offensive auntie's demand to have Magda's bedroom. At least in the opening of this book, Myers seemed to be making a very good case against allowing her Miss Yoder to go through with a wedding, if these in-laws would be placed into the (lack of) bargain.
Most often light satire provides few if any characters to like or to live with through a story (and sometimes there is no actual story). That wasn't true in this case, since as the plot progressed each cartoon caricature fleshed out and warmed up, and sensitive relationships quickly developed between Magda and several of them. Another "in" to the story was accomplished by the way Magda dealt with the plethora of foolishness around her. Magda's "way" was so delightfully hilarious, it satisfied a reader's desires to vicariously deal directly like Magda does, without a single pussyfoot, with obnoxious, outrageous people. Absolutely no feeling of sympathy surged within me for these potential in-law bozos as they crossed the line of Magda's fires of wit. With Aaron (early in the plot) sometimes standing up for thicker blood, at Magda's dehydration expense, he didn't bode himself well for flowing along in Magda's Pooky Bear category. But his character as a worthy mate took hold as the story moved into muck and menagerie, and his obvious, expressed admiration trickled forth for Magda's outspoken, no-nonsense, sensible manner(s).
In my reading of PICKLED TO DEATH, I noticed I had fallen into the story, solidly and willingly, as I came upon the scene in which Magda walked to Aaron's family farm property (graced with beautiful setting descriptions); did the difficult dance with the cats (so vividly, comically narrated); recharged in the glistening sun (I have the same beliefs and have, strangely, expressed them in a similar way in my Mya Gem series); discussed and conversed with the ghost of her grandmother (warm, yet with a nice edge of eerie, and plausibility); then descended dankly into the root cellar and crashed gracelessly into the husband of one of Aaron's aunties. I may have the plot order slightly reversed in places, but that sequence was VERY, very well done, with the humor present but dimmed into notched-up suspense. That sequence slipped through brilliant flashes of excellent prose and syntax, while dramatizing a dark ghost story within a short series of plot steps.
Prior to that scene I had been carried along easily with the Myers ever-present-wit, which, in addition to being constant, was delightfully edgy, and (as usual) her wit subtly folded-in light satire on Amish/Mennonite ways-and-means, attitudes-and-genetics. In that sense this series is like a Mennonite version of Jeff Foxworthy.
What brought Foxworthy to mind (relative to Miss Yoder) was that I recently posted a review of one of Jill Churchill's Jane Jeffry series (MERCHANT OF MENACE, see my reviews and Listmania of that series) in which a new addition to Jane's neighborhood was featured, garish hillbillies who were perfect fodder for Foxworthy jokes, especially after Jane began warming up to the couple instead of looking down her nose at them. Though my husband Tom and I are really not hillbillies in the true sense, we take pride in resembling some of the Foxworthy jokes, and we laugh heart-healing-ly at them.
Just as I was realizing why satire is sometimes harder to "live in" and how it provides a different (difficult) mood from other novels, this light version of that style gave this reader a welcome mat. The "can't live here" essence in satire seems to arise from the characters being cuttingly, comically unlikeable; no true relationships or pleasing intimacy can grow among the thrashing and slashing. Possibly no relationships develop in satire because the purpose is to cut everything apart to expose dirt; it's not to warm people together in mutual admiration, to nurture intimacy. Sandpaper is not a bonding agent.
Just as I was remembering (and dreading) those essentially cold edges in satiric humor, I was pleasantly surprised to note that sensitive relationships had gingerly begun to root between Magda and a few of her in-laws. And a touching scene between Magda and Susannah culminated in genuine affection. You won't want to miss that tender conversation, with the humor present but in no danger of interfering with the bond which took hold between sisters.
There were several one-on-one, sensitive scenes in which Magda made healthy emotional inroads with her in-laws and they with her. The scene with Aaron's father was especially heartfelt, as was the first one between Magda and Sarah's father, as dirty laundry (decades stewing) was sudsed up clean, then hung out to dry.
Loved in this one the way naps seemed to be one of the main bonding "activities" (it appears that naps are an endearing part of Amish culture), and Myers used a variety of clever adjectives to describe the sounds of snoring. Yet, this book in no way allowed snoring space for the reader, who was breathing rhythmically, yes, but with mind and heart engaged deeply enough inside pages of print that lung motion had become peaceful, regular, and unnoticed as the plot encouraged a continued awakening of consciousness.
Within this cozy emotional production, clues to the murders had been delicately placed; I hadn't noticed that process until I had begun wondering (though not feeling a loss of entertainment edge), "where's the mystery."
As I read along in this PenDutch series I continue to relish the brilliant flashes of the talent and cultural consciousness which flourished in the concept of THE DARK SIDE OF HEAVEN, which, as noted above, is Tamar Myers's mainstream novel published May 15, 2006 and which has been nominated for The Pulitzer Prize.
The depth and richness in PICKLED was a great heralding for that landmark of literary lace. Myers stories have many moods beyond her full-bore, teasing snippets, and she uses them in her PenDutch series like a maestro conducting a symphony of mesmerizing charm.
Hats off to a sophisticated talent expressed in variously-mood-ed-angles of clear-and-true literature providing entertainment pizzazz like sparklers on the Fourth of July.
Harried hair a-fly,
Linda Shelnutt
enjoyable read.......2005-11-06
different from the usual mold of women in mystery novels - seems more like a genuine person and is more interesting because of that. Funny, well- written, enjoyable read, pleasant way to spend the evening.
Delicious Fun!.......2004-08-25
Magdalena Yoder, the owner of the Penn-Dutch Inn is finally getting married. Not only is she busy planning her wedding, and dealing with her future husband's relatives who are staying at the Inn, but her future father-in-law gives her a barrel of sauerkraut as a wedding gift, which contains the remains of Aaron (the groom's) cousin who has been missing for 20 years. Magdalena doesn't want anything to spoil her wedding and tries to find the killer before the day of her wedding.
As always, Myers fills the book with quirky characters, many of whom are suspects. Her books are laugh out loud funny, in fact, I'm still laughing over the last two pages!
Thank Goodness. This Book is Hilarious!.......2003-09-06
I was so disappointed after the last book, but this book made up for it in spades. It is extremely funny, and the final bit at the end of the book with Magdalena's wedding will make you howl. Even the discovery of the corpse is funny. It turns up in a 20-year old bucket of sauerkraut. Magdalena is less than amused since the sauerkraut was given to her by her soon to be father-in-law as a gift. Now with the discovery of this corpse, will she still be able to get married in a week? You'll have to read to find out what hilarious antics she gets up to this time.
Tickled with Pickled.......2002-01-14
Well, she does it again! This 4th Penn-Dutch mystery in Tamar Myers' series is as fresh as the first. Magdalena's wedding day approaches, but her cousin's fiance' is found murdered inside a crock of sauerkraut. Solving the crime before the wedding prods Magdalena to find the killer of this 20 year old crime. Filled with aunts and uncles come for the wedding, the characters are varied and alive. Magdalena and police chief Melvin's sparring is at top form in this one. Wait till he tries to strip search her! Enjoy!

Time wasted, never to be regained........2003-07-20
I am not a Robert E. Howard-only Conan book fan (although Howard is clearly the best), and have found other author's efforts at fleshing out Conan tales very enjoyable. This particular book, however, was not enjoyable. It was more like a chore that required a lot of discipline to continue reading. I still thought of bailing out with only about 60 pages to go!
Maybe the cover art, with the demon that looks like Yoda on steroids, made it impossible for me to take the demons in the book seriously. The artist, Ken Kelly, is superbly talented, but this was one of his weaker efforts.
Green dedicates this book to a Guild of Exotic Dancers. He should have - the scenes that include exotic dancers in this book are the only memorable ones. These only take up about 25 pages or so, however, and the rest of the book is forgettable. The characterization is shallow and fails to pull you into the story. There is never really any sense of danger throughout the book; it is the most moodless book I have ever read. The endless references to spells are tiresome. No settings are successfully created. The female leads in the story prance about in the buff for almost the entire book. It is as if the plot is so weak that the only thing that the author can do to gain the readers attention is to describe someone discarding their tunic every chapter. Believe it or not, fellas, it loses its appeal real fast.
Conan is scarcely recognizable, has no wit, and is basically a big guy with a big sword and a big libido. It may well be that Green has matured as a writer since penning this book, but I'll never trust him with my time again. If you are committed to reading every Conan book on the planet, this should be on the bottom of the pile. Why Tor ever published this book is beyond me.
Conan the Valiant.......2001-02-16
This was a pretty good read. Conan had the help of some colorful characters that enhanced the book. The ending was the only lacking part. The story, how it unfolds, and detail kept me very interested.

Good Cookbook.......2007-05-16
I haven't actually made anything from this cookbook! I either cannot find the ingredients or I would never use them. I'm not into using of a lot of fat in my cooking even though on the Atkins diet it's not a big deal. I'm just not going to use it and that renders most of the book useless to me. It's a very well written book and if you don't have a problem with what I've listed above then you will enjoy it very much.
LOW COST.......2007-04-12
THIS PRODUCT WAS JUST WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR , AND AT A GREAT PRICE
Title is good... NOT as good as a cookbook!.......2007-01-21
I bought this book because of good reviews, BUT when I finally had a chance to read the book and check out the recipes, I was highly disappointed. The author listed ingredients, a sweetener, that is not readily available.
By reading a recipe and its ingredients, I can normally tell whether the dish is going to be good, with this cookbook, I just don't see it.
I've tried the Lemon custard, it was unedible!
Repetition, bad advice, unsound science.......2006-08-28
If ever a book cried out for a managerial editor and a science advisor, this is it. The book repeats the same exclamation in one recipe after another (soy protein, not soy flour!), and yes, the exclamation mark was included every time. Many recipes call for lard or ground pork rinds...It turns out the writer mistakenly thought that liquid oils contained trans fats, so she substituted saturated fats. Unbelievable.
Best cookbook in my collection!.......2006-08-09
If there were only one cookbook in my kitchen, this would be the one! Now I can cook in a manner that allows me to stick to my low carb lifestyle while my husband and kids enjoy every bite as well. After many successful (and repeat) recipes, four of my friends/ family members have purchased the book. You will not miss the sugar or the carbs in any of these amazing recipes.

Gourmet taste without the difficult instructions.......2007-07-30
My husband actually found this on the bargain bin! Little did we know it would be the best cookbook we own. Everything i have cooked has been scrumptious. I recommend the jalepeno enchildas and asian stuffed shrooms.
My husband said he wouldn't mind being vegetarian if all the food tasted this good.
Good, hearty food.......2002-09-16
I got this book for Christmas a few years back, and didn't really open it for a while. I wish I'd opened it sooner -- everything I've tried has been good. My boyfriend, who's new to cooking anything other than roasted meat, has found all the beginner-starred recipes to be simple and fairly fool-proof. Most of the dishes we've tried have a down-home, comfort food feel, and are quite filling.
One note: most things we've made have been a little on the bland side -- I'd suggest doubling all spice amounts for anything that's supposed to be spicy. Also, almost everything has needed a little extra salt, but that's easily remedied by a shaker on the table.
Wonderful Cookbook.......1999-05-09
This is my favorite cookbook! After sitting down at each meal I found myself saying "yum . . . this tastes like gourmet food . . .!! My spouse loves all the recipes and is thrilled when ever I'm thumbing through the book looking for stuff to cook. I want to thank Ginny for publishing such a wonderful cookbook. I have wanted to thank her personally, but I haven't gotten around to writing a letter. Hopefully she will see this review.
This is a great addition to your vegetarian bookshelf.......1998-11-09
Having been vegetarian for several years, I am always looking for new books to add to my collection. All the recipes that I've tried in this book have been pretty good, but by far the best feature in my mind is the muffin recipes. They are all honey sweetened, which is great for those who can't/don't do sugar. But this is the only cookbook I have where the muffins turn out like those huge ones you find in the store. Every single muffin recipe I've tried has come out of the oven overflowing the muffin cups and tasting great. This is definitely worth the money if you are a muffin lover!
Customer Reviews:
Good but.......2006-02-20
This is a good book with beautiful glossy pictures, but the information in it is very basic. The first 44 pages is devoted to setup, equipment and water with adverts thrown in under the guise of showing you equipment that you should buy for your cichlids. If you are experienced with aquariums(I have maintained different types for over 25 years) you will find most of the first 44 pages a "101" course. The last 20 pages of the book suggests beginner fish for your tank, which I found useful as this was my first African cichlid tank.
A good beginner book, but a bit thin on info about the actual fish.
GREAT BOOK.......2003-05-09
The book is a little thin but remember dont judge a book by its cover. The pictures are GREAT!!! I have been a cichlid breeder for about 25 years and just recently i went into africans and this was one of my first books. The only problem is that it doesnt elaborate on some things, but its a great book.
Nicely put together, but skips around with a lot of basics........1998-12-17
As a friend of mine (that owns a pet shop) said, "I really wish this book had been around when my 8 year old did a report on fish. . .". The book is beautiful. If you need some great pix or if you need some pretty easy text to copy, go for this book. If you have an in depth interest in cichlid keeping or breeding, get the book by Loiselle.
A greate book for beginners.......1998-09-13
This book has a lot of general information about Tanganyikan cichlids and the way to keep them in a home aquarium. The pictures in the book have a special glossy cover, which makes them look very good. It's an excellent 'first book', but someone interested in information about specific cichlid should search for them in another book.
Customer Reviews:
Best book out there for African Cichlids.......2006-01-11
What an amazing book!!! Amazing content with very useful information and beautiful pictures to boot. I dare you to find a better book out there on African Cichlids.
A great spectrum of stupidy !.......2003-10-02
First of all the book is 448 pages long (you would think there would be an abundent amount of usefull information) well THINK AGAIN ! The book is full of pictures with outdated scientific names, the only information about breeding any type of cichlid (being malawi or tang) is that you throw in a male with two or three female keep the water clean and BAM, you will have fry everywhere! It takes him about 20 pages to say this, in which he keeps repeating about just putting the fish in together and keeping the water clean. This book is trash and I am highly dissapointed, I wouldnt sell it for the simple fact that I would feel as though I am cheating someone out of money. If you are, on the other hand, looking for a book because your 2 year old seems to be fascinated by fish and fish pictures, then this would be ok for you. Out of the 448 pages 300 are pictures with no information about keeping the fish in an aquaria whatsoever, no explanations & poor "guessing at the correct names"; as he refers to over and over again "this is probably a ___ sp " Very jumbled and poorly organized ; even with the photos ~ this book doesnt even deserve 1 star!
A great disappointment.......2003-09-29
I thought that this book will have all the info i'll need for my African cichlids aquariums, but this book is a total flop ,
surprising with the names that were responsible for its release.
It has little info on the life of the African cichlid of lake Malawi & Tanganyka and nothing else , it is mainly a picture book (more then 90%) WITHOUT any data on the fish in the pics.
It seems i'm stuck with it but you can find much much better books to spend your money on.
Full of pictures with missing information.......2001-05-09
I bought this book in order to gain practical information on cichled species and their identification but I am highly dissapointed. It is full of pictures with a lot of missing information (such as sexsing, behaviour or breeding) and it is full of technical descriptions which are not helpful for an amateur aquarist. Photos of the lake Malawi and Tanganyika fishes are all mixed up; pages are not organised at all.
Don't repeat my mistake.......2001-04-24
One expects when buying a book by such a respected author to acquire a truly great book. This is not the case with this book. First of all, most photography are of very poor quality. Second, not all pages are numbered! This make the job of identifying fishes a lot harder. I'm very disapointed.

Classic, But Not What I had Expected.......2007-01-29
This is more of a entertainment read, a starting point, or an introduction. It doesn't include very detailed information on specific topics and lacks any pictures or color which would be great.
its ok.......2006-07-25
the book had a lot of useful growing tips but without pictures can tend to be a bit useless if you have no prior knowledge on the plants. it is pretty helpful if you also have other books that you can reference to
a waste of paper.......2006-05-12
totally disapointed in this book. Lacking in anything but VERY basic information.
The title should have the words "pocket guide" in it........1999-11-09
The book is much smaller than I had expected. It is full of small blurbs about various legal hallucinogens that can be grown in the home (a very short list of supplier is given in the bibliography). Each blurb gives enough information to describe the plant, it's habitat, and how to cultivate it in the home. The book doesn't go into common problems in cultivation (diseases, pests, etc), however.
A good starting point for those interested in the subject of legal home grown hallucinogens, but when you find something that interests you, buy a book specific to that plant.
