Book Description
V.I.'s battleaxe Aunt Rosa is under investigation by the FBI and SEC after counterfeit stock certificates were found at St. Albert's Priory, where she serves as treasurer. As malicious as her aunt is, V.I. knows she's not dishonest, so V.I. vows to protect her from taking the fall. But V.I. starts questioning the strength of her family ties when a menacing voice on the phone threatens to throw acid into her eyes if she doesn't butt out. The stakes are high as she begins to sniff out a connection between Chicago's most powerful institutions: the Church and the Mob.

Decent, but not as good as Deadlocked........2007-09-17
Sara Paretsky, Killing Orders (Signet, 1985)
Paretsky's third V. I. Warshawski novel begins with the plucky private eye responding to a plea for help from a relative she can't stand. When things start off this badly, you know they're not going to end well. So does Vic. But still, familial obligation pressures her to take the case of her awful Aunt Rosa, the treasurer at a local monastery, who (along with a number of others who work there) is under suspicion when a number of stock certificates in the office safe are found to be forgeries. Vic starts detecting, but Rosa does a one-eighty the next day and wants her to back off; soon after, her life is threatened by a mysterious caller if she doesn't get off the case. Put these two things together, and you can be sure Warshawski will see things through to the bitter, ugly end. With the help of Roger Ferrant, whom we first met in Deadlocked, and the everpresent Lotty, crime is standing on shaky ground in Chicago and its environs!
Well, not quite. Warshawski is one of hard-boiled-dom's more human detectives, and so far in the series, that hasn't shown through nearly as much as it does in this entry. Vic makes some bad choices, and her indecision leads others close to her to make bad choices for her. Of course, you have to throw in the everpresent roadblocks (Bobby Mallory being the most visible of them), and you've got all the ingredients for a very tasty, if foul, stew. There's a lot going on in this novel, and it sometimes seems as if Paretsky may have overextended herself; another reviewer comments that she doesn't think Paretsky "had quite fashioned her own mold for the genre yet" when this novel was written, and that's as fine a way of putting what's wrong with this novel-- especially coming right on the heels of the wonderful Deadlocked-- as any. There's no specific thing to put one's finger on, it's just a general feeling of "this isn't quite as good as it could be." Still, the core of the book is a good, solid mystery, and in the course of solving it, we get to learn more about some of the core characters in the series, so in the end, it does what it seems to have set out to do. ***
Early VI.......2007-08-01
One of the first in Paretsky's V.I Warshawski series, Killing Orders involves stock fraud among the friars in a Chicago Dominican convent. When VI's less than beloved aunt, who works at the friary, is implicated, she calls in her niece to help her retain her good reputation. It's surprising how interesting a mystery about financial fraud can be in the hands of Sara Paretsky. VI (Victoria) is no pushover, and when the case grows personally intimidating, she digs in and resolves to break it no matter what or who she has to take on. Even if her new love interest is involved.....
Gets into the character.......2002-03-23
KILLING ORDERS is one of Paretsky's earlier V. I. Warshawski novels. In this case her aunt Rosa is accused by her church in committing stock fraud. She reluctantly asks her niece for her help in clearing her name.
I have read most of Warshawski's novels and this one is one of my favorites mainly because I got to learn more about her character as well as her relationship with her friend, Lotty. I regret having read them in disorder but I recommend this novel for anyone interested in learning how V. I. got started. Although this is the third novel in the series it tells a lot.
Weird but good.......2000-09-16
Very good, in fact. I don't think Paretsky had quite fashioned her own mold for the genre yet, so there are a few cliché elements in the book, but everything else is a highly original treat. Lots of great little twists throughout--not just plot twists, but different ways of looking at things. With V.I. Warshawski, Paretsky has created a heroine who is intelligent, engaging, and not afraid to shake things up. I haven't read much early V.I. yet, but I intend to, so I can get to know this woman from the beginning.
Fun Heroine.......1998-12-29
This is the first book I've read by her and enjoyed it. I was stumped until the end, so that's good.

7 massmarket paperbacks Titles in V. I. Warshawski Series - Windy City Blues - Tunnel Vision - Killing Orders - Fire Sale - Blacklist - Indemnity Only - Bitter Medicine
Book Description
It was a bitter cold morning in March, 1908. A 19-year-old Jewish immigrant traversed the confusing and unfamiliar streets of Chicagoa one-and-a-half-hour journeyfrom his ghetto home on Washburne Avenue to the luxurious Lincoln Place residence of Police Chief George Shippy. He arrived at 9 A.M. Within minutes after knocking on the front door, Lazarus Averbuch lay dead on the hallway floor, shot no less than six times by the chief himself.
Why Averbuch went to the police chief's house or exactly what happened after that is still not known.
This is the most comprehensive account ever of an episode that stunned Chicago and won the attention of the entire country. It does not "solve" the mystery as much as it places it in the context of a nation that was unsure how to absorb the many immigrants flowing across its borders. It attempts to reconstruct the many different perspectives and concerns that comprised the drama surrounding the investigation of Averbuch's killing.

Book Description
Killing Goliath shouts with fervor about the detrimental and desperate state of humankind in the new Millennium.
As tyranny and terror seek to spread fear throughout the entire globe, the need for bold courageous people from all walks of life to stand for righteousness is far beyond imperative in order for true freedom to be realized by all men, women and children.
Slavery in all of its despicable forms holds mankind in its grip while glaring menacingly upon those who desire the God given dreams of life, freedom, good health and a place to raise their children.
The climax of civilization is being threatened by an army who spits in the face of God and relishes in seeing division between certain people so as to expand its evil conquest all over the world.
Goliath and his army will fall to the resistance of the people who take up their arms, risking their very lives in order to wage a valiant war against everything that opposes the true life that reflects the character and goodness of God.

Interesting book drawing from an ancient legend.......2006-11-24
I just got done reading this book over the weekend. I had been looking for a nice Persian story book for my 4.5 year old daughter and came across this. Fortress of the Golden Dragon while a great story, is a bit too complex for a 4 year to fully understand. The story borrows heavily from the ancient Persian myth of Haftvad (please see: [...]. There are many additional elements however present in this story which make it unique and a great magical story. There are some good moral lessons there as well. Therefore, I will keep this book and read it to my daughter in a few years when she is a bit older.
Great Read!.......2005-05-09
This book is enchanting and delightful. It is a must read for older children and adults. I would not be surprised if it were on the big screen soon!
Every Mother's Hope.......2005-03-20
This book is a wonderful way of showing children and young adults, as well as grown ups, how they can strengthen and grow their inner good to overcome all dark and evil forces within them. Not only is a well described story, it is also very inspirational to all readers. Once you start this entertaining book you will never want to set it down.
The Divine Story.......2005-03-20
I found this book, written by Homa A. Garemani to be very intriguing and entertaining for all ages. This book is an ancient tale that makes you use your imagination. It gives enough imagery to give you the main picture and leaves out enough to make you use your imagination and create a world you see in your mind's eye. With its intricate use of love, hate, and magic this tale is a good read for everyone. There are many themes that can be derived from this book such as, love can overcome any obstacle and when you learn from your mistakes and keep a level head anything is possible. In this story many characters are actually symbols for bigger things, such as Peerbabu. He is the good inside of everyone that is always there. It comes when you need it and is the hope that drives out the evil. The evil in this story isn't really the "dragon" but instead it is Amaease, he represents the greed and power hungry people in the world. This book has a universal message, the beauty of it is in its simplicity. There are few books that are written for one culture, that can be related to everone which the whole world is able to understand, and this is one of them. The only other book I have read that was able to do this was The Illiad and the Odessy. I grew up living with books like Harry Potter and The Hobbit, but this is a book about my culture that is interesting and makes me feel even more proud about my heritage.
Fabulous!.......2005-03-07
Wonderful! It is a bit of "Lord of the Rings" meets "Cinderella" meets "The Celestine Prophesy". I highly recommend this book.

It may be difficult for those suffering from depression to add a little work into their day; simply getting out of bed can seem like plenty of work. But if you are newly diagnosed or experiencing moderate problems with depression or bipolar disorder, The Depression Workbook might be a literal lifesaver.
The first section is especially useful to new patients just learning to navigate the signs, treatments, and vocabulary of depression. Clearly written overviews of specific symptoms are coupled with space for you to write in your own thoughts on treatment, prognosis, and your ultimate goals. Checklists and daily planners help to identify both areas of difficulty and positive experiences; later in the book, you'll find charts for tracking medications, diet, and doctor visits.
A full section is devoted to the establishment and maintenance of a support group. Ideas range from open discussions with family members to seeking out volunteer work, and it's this section that may be the trickiest for the depressed to work through. Finding the strength to make new friends may seem impossible at first, but author Mary Ellen Copeland spreads plenty of warmth, encouragement, and personal experience among her directives. --Jill Lightner
Book Description
This bestselling workbook provides interactive exercises that help readers take responsibility for their own wellness and teach essential coping skills, such as tracking and controlling moods, building a support system, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem, avoiding conditions that can exacerbate mood swings, and using relaxation, diet, and exercise to stabilize moods.A major feature of the second edition is a new chapter that details a step-by-step process to help readers develop their own plan for managing symptoms and staying well. The second edition also contains an updated list of resources, including an extensive list of helpful web resources, as well as expanded material on specific treatment strategies and updated resources for mental health professionals.

Non bi-polars beware.......2007-06-10
This is a great book but I found that it was suited more for people with bi-polar issues or manic issues. In addition, if done alone at home, it can bring up some really difficult issues. I think this is great to use in a group setting or in a partial or full hospital program, but I found it to bring up too many emotions and prefer to use it in group settings only.
Somewhat helpful.......2006-08-23
I found that this book was heavily skewed to bipolar depression. While the information and exercises given are no doubt helpful to those with bipolar depression, I found that they did not really pertain to my unipolar (postpartum) depression. I would look for different resources if you are suffering from unipolar depression.
Great Help for Depression.......2006-08-14
Depression is a horrible illness that I would not have survived if it were not for books like this one. I researched and sought information endlessly when in the black hole of this horrible illness. This book provides resources and information that is necessary for anyone suffering from depression or those working with the suffering individuals. Always remember there is help and its not as bad as it seems. Depression is an illness that effects your entire being so treatment is necessary. You cant just shake it off. This book helps.
Definitely recommended for the depressed and those working with these individuals.
Practical Options for Managing Bipolar.......2006-04-29
Some of the reviewers have stated that the book made them more depressed because they were so depressed they couldn't follow the suggestions in the book. I will be the first to admit that you can be so depressed that you can't do much of anything including reading. This book does contain useful suggestions for times when you are not at the extremes of mania and depression when you can follow through on ideas in the book. It also addresses how to make some practical plans for what to do when these mood crises occur and how to moderate their disruptive effects on your life.
The book provides a wide range of different approaches for detecting your symptoms, maintaining stability, moderating the effects of mania, developing a support network, and methods for stress reduction. In many ways, the book can be used the way you'd use a cookbook. Go through the ideas presented and find the ones that appeal to you and try them.
Suggestions for a rewrite.......2005-12-25
This is an addendum to my review of two years ago.
First off, I mentioned that the book is written on a grade-school level. Why not produce another edition, with the title "The Depression Workbook for Smart People" or "The Depression Workbook for the College-Educated"? This may help some of us to feel less put off and alienated.
Additionally, the book is also written from a highly feminine point of view. The profession expresses concern that more men are not coming forward and seeking help for depression, but I believe many men are not comfortable with many of the suggestions put forward in this book (and many others). Men are not inclined to take up painting, or knitting, or flower arranging. We like skeet shooting, NASCAR, and cage fighting. In other words, expecting men to become more like women in order to get well is unreaslistic. Another suggested edition: "The Depression Workbook for Men."

Collage student.......2006-11-07
This has been a great help for my grandson, a student with little time and money.
Great cookbook.......2003-10-03
In "The Ultimate Cooking with 4 Ingredients" author Jean Coates treats the reader to a plethora of simple, yet tasty, recipes. This is a particularly great cookbook for those with little cooking experience or for someone who wants to put together a balanced, healthy, home cooked meal without a lot of fuss. The instructions for preparation of each dish could not be easier. If you are used to the books with three or four paragraphs of preparation instructions you will be pleasantly surprised to find that these recipes can all be completed with only three to four simple steps.
I tried a few recipes and found that among my favorites were Potatoes Supreme, Hawaiian Pork, and Cola Chicken. Based on the ingredients list the Cola Chicken sounded so unlikely to taste good that I just had to try it and it turned out great. I also liked the way that Coates broke down the main dishes into the categories of chicken, beef, pork, and seafood instead of lumping them all together under the "Main Dishes" category like most cookbooks do.
The recipes often take advantage of mixes like a box cake mix or stuffing mix in order to keep the ingredients list down to four. But for the new cook or one who does not have a lot of time or want a lot of fuss making dinner it meets all the important requirements - quick and easy to prepare, goof-proof, minimal cleanup, and tasty. This is a highly recommended read and especially so for the novice cook or the hurried family cook or the college bound student.
Book Description
Robin Jean Brown understands firsthand the deep bond that can develop between person and animal. She's not some cold psychologist, but rather a pet owner herself who dealt with her own painful journey through the grieving process. She found that there wasn't a lot of help for her. Other books are either too cold and clinical...or they're too sad, and just make you cry harder. And none of them had workbook-style questions to guide her through her journey. So Robin wrote the guide herself - to deal with your grief, effectively and step by step. She is personal, empathetic, and comforting - yet at the same time she'll help you move through your grief.
Customer Reviews:
How to ROAR.......2007-07-05
It was an OK book. When one is grieving, just about anything out there to help cope is a good thing. I found the poems very moving but some of the workbook questions were redundant.
very helpful.......2007-07-05
this was a gift for my mother. She lost her beloved Beaux san in May. She said although the questions were hard to answer-it helped her work through her grief. She said since it is a work book-it forces you to remember and write down info regarding your pets death, which has been very helpful in helping her come through this very difficult time. Beaux San wasnt just a pet. he was a very loved part of our family. If you need help with the loss of one of your "family members" this is the book for you.
Book Worth Reading.......2007-06-20
When I first saw the title ROAR i was turned me off as I had just lost my beloved Benji. However, as I read the reviews and learned the author's definition of ROAR - it then made sense. While I did not write in my copy I did use it as a guide in my journaling.
This book helped easy the pain .......2007-06-08
This book is easy to read and has been helping me get through several losses.
how to roar.......2006-08-06
a very heartwarming book to help one through the feelings how to get thru the pain of a lost dear friend and companion. a very healpful guide

A GORGEOUS BOOK ON A NICHE COLLECTIBLE.......2007-01-28
My Aunt Sophie lived in Detroit for some fifty years. She had this great, big brick house that was so different from my family's house in the `burbs. The thing I remembered most was her house being filled with all manner of antiques. Even as a child I new that that stuff was really old. She had this great television set within a cherry cabinet with the doors that opened up. On top was what I thought was a wonderful statue of a black panther but I would find out later was really a lamp.
These TV lamps are the subject of TV Lamps to Light the World. In their foreward, Bob & Peg Parks both mention that panther lamp. It seems to have been among the most popular styles of TV lamps in the 50's but as author John A. Shuman III shows, there were hundreds of great figural lamps adorning the TVs or whatever of Americans. These TV lamps have become hot items among collectors today, all pining for the nostalgic era of a simpler, if not cheesier era of home décor.
Shuman begins with a little history behind the lamps and some of the manufacturers that made them such as Gonder Ceramic Arts, Haeger Potteries,Maddux, and Wahpeton Pottery. A short history is provided on each of these companies as well as noting some of their unique styles and markings. We also learn that lamps were often given away to customers when they purchased a TV set and many people purchased their lamps with S&H Green Stamps.
Getting into the identification and value section, Shuman shows off hundreds of full color photos, sorted by themes such as birds, cats, deer, dogs, horses, jungle & western themes, ships, oriental, and several others. Throughout the book Shuman intersperses pages of interesting information about the time period that these lamps were at the height of their popularity with popular personalities and TV shows of the 50's as well as popular models of televisions.
The guide provides very crisp and colorful photos of the lamps with a description of the piece, including its size, and the current value range. The one thing the book doesn't provide is the maker of each lamp which really would have been nice. Overall, the book does a fine job of covering a very specialized collectible. It's a gorgeous book.

Polymer clay has grown and grown and grown in popularity since the publication of Donna Kato’s best-selling The Art of Polymer Clay in 1997. And there have been so many technical advances, too. Now poly-diva Donna Kato presents an all-new look at one of crafters’ all-time favorite mediums. Donna Kato’s Polymer Clay Innovations begins with the essentials of polymer clay, including its working properties, plus tools, curing, safety recommendations, and color blending (with full information on the now-indispensable Skinner Blend). Photo-packed chapters focus on exciting projects—beads, bracelets, pins, pendants, and boxes--and showcase new techniques, including image transfers, surface treatments such as stencils, stamps, paints, and inks, sculpting, inclusions, special effects, and finishing. Finished pieces by some of the biggest names in polymer clay, including Kathleen Dustin, Pier Voulkos, and Nan Roche, plus Donna Kato herself, offer ideas and inspiration.

Looking for something extra.......2007-10-05
If your looking to do something different with your polymer clay, then this is the book for you. I love all the different methods Donna Kato talks aout, and she writes so well, it is so easy to read, and she makes you feel like it is the easist thing in the world. I love just looking at the images in this book as well. The only thing I would say I don't like about this is book, is that several of the projects are japanease style, but this doesn't make any difference bcuase you can create whatever designs you want to. If you thinking about a polymer clay book-to extend your knowledge then don't hestiate to buy this one!
Nice book.......2007-09-03
You get to know how to, to all the things the title of this page says but most of the projects are to make pendants, if you looking to make a lot of beads projects get " Making Polymer Clay Beads: Step-by-Step Techniques for Creating Beautiful Ornamental Beads by Carol Blackburn " as complement to this book, I think you gonna learn a lot out of this two books to start making polymer clay jewelry or whatever.
Any library strong in clay crafts needs this........2007-09-03
Ten years ago clay artist Donna Kato's first book ART OF POLYMER CLAY established her as an early authority on the topic: she's become a teacher and product designer since then, and her latest title The Art of Polymer Clay: Creative Surface Effects: Techniques and Projects Featuring Transfers, Stamps, Stencils, Inks, Paints, Mediums, and More expands the topic to the next level, featuring dozens of techniques for exciting surface effects and art options. Chapters cover everything from inkjet transfers onto clay surfaces to texturing and toner transfers. Any library strong in clay crafts needs this.
Wouah!.......2007-08-31
Superb book, to be recommended to whom wants to make with polymer clay something really special. Clear explanations, beautiful projects. It requires some material; but the results are the reward.
A must for any craft library.......2007-08-26
I just started working with polymer clay a few weeks ago and wanted a book that logically explains techniques as well as offering good photography. Being a librarian and fiber artist, I HAVE to have my own library of art/craft books for reference and inspiration. Kato's is one of the best I have for any media. Concentrating on a wide array of decorative accessories for the home--not including adornments for walls, floors, and furniture--Fantastic Finishes presents more than 30 colorful, attractive techniques to adorn frames, boxes, trays, screens, small tables, and much more. In project after project you'll learn about wood finishes (antiquing, distressing, graining, crackling, and decoupage); metal finishes (verdigris, patina, foiling, and leafing); marble, stone, and shell finishes (malachite, fantasy marble, granite, abalone, and tortoiseshell); and decorative finishes (painted motifs, texturing, embossing, floral painting, and leather looks). To provide inspiration, each category closes with a photo gallery of items decorated using the techniques. There's also a handy chart showing 24 different finishes together across a double-page spread, making it easy to compare them when trying to choose a method for a particular project of your own.

Book Description
Type permeates our visual world, as it is a primary means of communication. But, the printed letter can move beyond its function as a tool to become an expressive art form relating information with its appearance. The size, weight, color, and design of a typeface is as much a part of the message or idea as the choice of words or tone of the message.
Letter Perfect explores the artistic facet of the style, arrangement, appearance, and recent accelerated evolution of typeset matter, primarily through the medium of posters. The selections within the book are reproductions from the archives of the Print and Drawing Collections of The Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
By David Ryan. 112 pages with 80 full-color reproductions. Casebound, with dust jacket. Size: 8 x 10".

Sweet, inspiring, and lovingly well researched, Janus Adams's Sister Days takes a meditative, sister-a-day journey through a year's worth of strong, wise, and capable African American women, from the famous to the obscure, from the dynamic to those who just quietly kept on. As she sagely reminds us, "as half the world, women had been no less than half the struggle, no less than half the story, and sometimes a lot more." In affectionately told and poignant anecdotes, these sisters gets their due, in a reverent celebration of "their power, their strength, their pain, their ways, and their better days." --Paul Hughes
