As reporter Irene Kelly investigates her Aunt Briana's death, she learns all about the longstanding feuds between several branches of her extended family and becomes the number one suspect in a murder case. Kelly's part of the family split with her Aunt Briana and her husband decades ago for reasons that Kelly has never really understood, but which involve bigamy, murder, illiteracy, and of course, money. Kelly's first task is to locate her cousin Travis, who she hasn't seen since childhood, and inform him of his mother's untimely death. Next, Kelly has to protect him from whoever murdered his mother. While investigating the case, Kelly encounters a violent man in a wet suit, a slightly unhinged inventor, a storyteller named Cosmo, and some unsavory residents of a trailer park - and learns that she is distantly related to most of these odd characters.

This is Jan Burke's sixth book about the adventures of Irene Kelly, a sassy journalist who lives in sunny southern California with her husband (a police detective), drives a Karmann Ghia, and seems to be a magnet for trouble. In this case, the trouble is that everyone is lying, even people with good intentions. Kelly's cousin is a capable and seasoned liar, a skill that comes in handy in several sticky situations. When deceit isn't enough, Kelly's best friend Rachel leaps to their aid with flying fists and tough talk. Fans of mysteries by Sue Grafton and Sara Paretsky are likely to enjoy Jan Burke's writing. Irene Kelly is a likeable, approachable heroine - an ordinary middle-aged woman who manages to get the best of the bad guys by relying on her wits and her friends. -Jill Marquis

Book Description

Investigative reporting has its hazards, but trouble hits home for Irene Kelly when her estranged aunt is murdered--and Irene becomes the leading suspect. With the police hot on her trail, Irene sets out to find cousin Travis, her dead aunt's son, convinced he's the next target.

But when Irene finds Travis, a camper-driving children's storyteller with suspiciously deep pockets, things blow up--literally. It takes several brushes with death, staying one step ahead of the law, and a few not-so-sweet reunions for Irene to untangle a complex web of family secrets and long-held grudges, and discover just who is killing off the Kelly clan--and why.

3 out of 5 stars In agreement with others..........2006-08-21

I stumbled across the first Irene Kelly novel, Goodnight Irene, a little less than a month ago and have flown through the rest of her books. I thoroughly enjoy them. HOWEVER, I have to agree with most of the other "critics" on this page and say there are too many characters to keep straight. I find myself having to flip back and forth to clarify storylines. I would like to note, for those who are considering reading these books, this is a series that is better read in order, than picking up in the middle.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best or the worst.......2005-06-08

This was my first exposure to Jan Burke. Although the book was interesting, I agree with the other reviewer who mentioned there were too many characters to keep track of. The book did ramble a bit and at times I found myself completely confused as to what was going on and how the characters were connected.

Having said this, I will try Jan Burke again-I bought Bloodlines at a Library Book Sale-before I write her off completely.

4 out of 5 stars Page-Turning Whodunit !!.......2004-04-08

I really enjoyed this book, the characters and the plot were very, very exciting.

3 out of 5 stars Too much Family Saga.......2003-01-15

Still recovering from incidents in Hocus and Irene's injuries from a previous accident, Frank and her are working on having a normal life with no unusual happenings. After her sister Barbara calls ranting and raving about a new grave next to there's parents, Irene goes to talk to Aunt Mary. During this conversation she learns about long lost relatives and family feud that started two decades ago. After some sleuthing at the
deceased' s house she locates her cousin Travis. The rest of the book is about Irene learning the truth about things that happened during her parent's marriage and why her mother and aunt was deceased. At some point I gave up on this plot, it just another tired family saga of who did who wrong. The mystery was just
there to give the book a purpose which it failed miserably. I thought after Hocus Burke was hitting her stride as a writer who spins page turning stories. Sadly she returned to the lackluster style of Remember Me Irene. Many times I found myself thinking why am I still reading this and the answer is Frank. If he in
the forefront of the stories then it has meat and I want to read more. When she sends him off on a wild goose chase the book doesn't hold my interest.

4 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2002-08-10

Jan Burke is an author I found by lucky accident...I'm now going back through all her books. She's got a great crew of well-developed characters and is developing fun and suspenseful plots...LIAR proved to be a great effort! Bravo!

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing thriller wannabe.......2000-12-20

Having picked up this book after (actually while) reading the First (that should have remained the only) Swords Trilogy I must admit that my expectations were a bit high - afterall, The Stonecutter's story is nothing but a spin-off. However, this book not only doesn't measure up to the first three, it is simply poorly written. In more than a few places in the text the characters refer to the events in exactly the same words as the author himself, not a dozen lines before. Usually economical writing style of Saberhagen deteriorates to the level of a comics book. The story itself has nothing of the grand scale of the First Swords setting - having read these back to back you are bound to have an attack of claustrophobia. Instead it centers on the recovery of the stolen Sword with all usual trimmings of the Sherlock Holmes story, sans the thrill. Moreover, the Magistrate himself looks like a homage (or a rip-off) to the venerable creation of Sir Conan Doyle, with Dr. Kasimir filling the niche of his sidekick, Dr. Watson. Injection of utterly modern political twist in the form of some Steppe democrat (imprisoned for his attempt to institute local councils in his native prairies) makes the entire novel even less readable. "Clues" are so plain and abundant, that the only way to make this book more predictable would be to put the last chapter in the beginning of it... Overall, it's a hastily written (and apparently never proof-read) bad political whodunit which just happens to have a Sword in it.

5 out of 5 stars Stonecutter cuts the best out of Fred Saberhagen.......2000-09-29

This was a swell book. I enjoyed the way it fell together. Even though the red temple was a little much, I still give it a five star review. This book had twists, and kept you yearning for more. Wen Chang was a great character, but Kasimir was better. If you want a good book to read on the weekend, pick this one up, because you're in store for a great book. Fred Saberhagen shines in this great story of the quest to find Stonecutter.

          2 out of 5 stars Slightly improved.......1999-09-30

'Stonecutter's Story' is better than the previous two 'Swords' books. The plot is more interesting and Saberhagen uses more dialogue to move the story along, but in the end, it's just as pointless as the first two. The good guys will prevail no matter how imposing the opponent.

Okay, we know you only read The Chocolate Bible for the articles, but will your friends believe you? After all, this stunning book is so overflowing with luscious photographs of chocolate in all its delectable varieties, shapes, and forms that it's hard to believe one could get any reading done under the circumstances. Still, if you can tear your eyes away from the illustrations, the text in this beautiful reference work is well worth perusing. From the history of chocolate in the first chapter to the recipes featuring a savory rather than sweet version of the bean in the last, The Chocolate Bible lives up to its name as the definitive resource.

Consider unusual dishes such as Noodles with Chocolate or Mexico's wondrous combination of chiles and chocolate to make Mole sauce; how about a recipe for modeling chocolate--a substance you're meant to play with, not eat--The Chocolate Bible has them all. Recipes for macaroons and tortes, wafers and candies, cakes, fillings, and beverages are at the heart of the book, but even if you never attempt a single one, you'll still get hours of pleasure just leafing through the pages--reading the articles, of course.

                    5 out of 5 stars My daughter's FAVORITE !!!.......2005-04-03

I've been mailing a cookbook to my daughter about once a month.....sort of like "Christmas around the year" to avoid the terrible rush in December. I ordered this from Amazon.com and had it shipped directly to California without seeing it myself, so I was a little apprehensive about the quality and content. I was thrilled to learn that this is now my daughter's F-A-V-O-R-I-T-E cookbook. (She called me, raving about it!) She has already made the "cover cake" which took a lot of time but was not too difficult for a non-professional cook. The book is filled with beautiful photos and incredible recipes.

5 out of 5 stars Glucose: Not so hard to find........2002-12-18

I just purchased this book. I find it excellent. Although I am a professional chef I think this book is very user friendly for the home cook. An earlier reviewer said they couldn't find glucose syrup. You can buy it in most super markets they just call it corn syrup. Use the white variety if available. It's also good for making sponge toffee.

1 out of 5 stars Worst choIcolate pecan pie on the planet.......2002-04-16

I just finished tearing out the pages of this worthless book and sending them to recycling, while throwing the binder into the trash compactor with the dreadful chocolate pecan pie it spawned. Never have I seen such a degradation of Valrohna chocolate, Normandy butter, free range eggs and a great deal of time. What a dreadful, dry, disgustging mess this recipie is! Do not waste your time on it.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Visual Delight!.......2001-12-12

What a treasure of a book. Not only visually delightful it is very educational as well. Makes you drool just seeing it on the table, thus it is dangerous to diets.

                    5 out of 5 stars Chocolate Heaven.......2001-03-18

My job is to sell chocolate - when it comes to finding a decent book on the subject, nobody knows the truffles I've seen. This book will be a gift to many of my customers who want to create decadent desserts as well as know some of the basics around chocolate and cocoa.

If you want to learn more about chocolate, buy this book. If you want to taste some of the best chocolate made in America...

".highly recommended.it makes the subject of healing easy to understand for everyone."--Blyth Tait, Olympic Gold Medal winner.

Lay your hands on a horse--and channel comforting, healing energy to him. A legendary healer, famous for her ability to deal with horses and their problems, shows you how. Anyone can apply these techniques to improve an equine's well-being and behavior: they're safe, free of side effects, and work on just about any condition. Use them alone or with other remedies so they'll work on a deeper level. After understanding what these methods do and why they benefit horses so much, you'll find out how to give a treatment. Where to put your hands is of utmost importance, and a chart guides you to the points on a horse's body that affect different conditions. Target specific ailments (like old age, arthritis, and grief), provide first aid, and give comfort. Prevent problems, too, and produce a feeling of inner calm in your horse. And, in case you didn't know, horses have chakras, too--areas of maximum energy intake that have particular power. When you lay hands over these points, you'll feel the resistance of energy flowing out. Find out about other natural therapies as well (including homeopathy and massage)--and read over the case histories: they're informative and inspiring! A Main Selection of the Doubleday Select Equestrian Club.

A beautifully written book that is easy to read and understand. The stories are moving, and the directions for beginning healing yourself on your own horse, are clear and concise with wonderful diagrams and pictures to further explain how to go about it. I have tried some of the techniques with my elderly horse who recently lost his best horse buddy, and have seen definite results. It is a book worth reading.

This book is an embarrassment. Virtually every page of book titles and listings has at least one glaring error. In the area of juvenile series books it is both incomplete, full of errors, etc. Examples are easy to find- Border Boys Series incorrectly dates the publishers, Bobbsey Twins description woefully incomplete, Battleship Boys lists only a few of the titles in the series and does not mention the first publisher which was Altemus, Airship Boys Series fails to note all of the books and both of the publishers. These mistakes are just on the pages I glanced at for series books. I suspect the same errors of commision and omission exist for many other books. Get yourself Mattson's guide for series books and do your own research for anything else. This book does have a nice glossy cover. Totally form over substance.

It is unlikely that the basics of pruning have ever before been assembled so thoroughly or comprehensively than in Lee Reich's The Pruning Book. With clear prose and generous diagrams and photographs, he takes the angst out of pruning for the beginning or experienced gardener. Included are all the basics presented in a step-by-step, friendly way to guide the reader through the pruning of ornamental bushes, evergreens, vines, trees, houseplants, and plants of almost every conceivable variety. Along with the information on basic pruning, he also covers the use, care, and maintenance of pruning tools. A large section of the book is devoted to specialized pruning techniques, such as pollarding, topiary, bonsai, and espalier. Proper pruning can produce enhanced growth, higher food production in food plants, more lavish blooms in flowering plants, healthier plant life, and visionary garden creations through artistic techniques. Reich has provided everything the reader needs to understand the skill and art of pruning for spectacular results in the garden. --Mark A. Hetts

                    Book Description

Every gardener knows that pruning makes plants healthier, more fruitful, and more beautiful. But most gardeners wince at the thought of pruning. In The Pruning Book, master horticulturist Lee Reich provides a remedy for "fear of pruning," making this dreaded task almost fun. In easy-to-read, engaging language, Reich gives specific methods for pruning hundreds of species from the cold climates to the tropics. He covers every type of plant, from ornamental bushes, evergreens, ornamental vines, and edible fruit and nut trees to houseplants. For those with special pruning interests Reich also gives time-tested advice for bonsai, topiary, espalier, and pleaching. He even takes a fresh look at such routine chores as mowing a lawn, including his own strategy for creating "lawn nouveau." With this witty and useful reference, any gardener can learn to like pruning.

Lee Reich is one of the more underrated garden writers today. His books are not pretty or decorative, but the amount that one can learn from them is much much more than than what you get from Martha Stewart or P. Allen Smith any day. Here's to more great work from him.

I am still currently reading the book. It's packed full of good things. The best thing about it is, if you have a specific type of plant you can go directly to that section and it gives you a clear and detailed way of pruning the plant. I think its a must have for any gardener.

4 out of 5 stars "The (fun) Pruning Book".......2000-12-31

Not only is The Pruning Book useful for our North Temperate Zone climate, but it is a joy to read. Of course, we all know that before pruning comes planting, which subject the author touches-on in his chapter on fruits and nuts.

I feel it's important to note that Author Lee Reich holds a doctorate in horticulture with an extensive background in pruning research. With regard to pruning trees, he emphasizes the fact that slow does it -- over a period of several years for both young and old. Regarding plants that can be intensively pruned, Lee points out how to exploit to our advantage the tendency of many woody plants to sprout prolifically. Such plants include hedges, topiary, standards, fruit etc.. Yet, he warns us against the heavy pruning of health-compromised woody plants. Dr. Reich, as well, underscores the fact that proper pruning includes an emphasis on minimalist pruning.

Lee hopes that we have properly sited our major woody plants -- planted the right tree in the right place, so to speak. He, nevertheless, also deals with those fun 'though labor intensive pruning forms -- pollarding and pleaching. Lee lists a number of fast-growing deciduous trees that "take" to pollarding as well as listing some trees with strong, flexible branches for pleaching. This is not a serious book of lists, just a productive attempt at teaching us how to form our own lists.

Good advice abounds throughout including apropos diagrams and photos. Plant specific advice is often augmented by easy to read tables in many of the categories of pruning that he discusses. Lee even covers something we forget to include in the subject of pruning -- mowing. And, necessarily, he does justice to the different pruning needs of the various maturational stages of our woodies. This includes training of the young plant as well as maintenance of the mature, and the finer points of renovation of the old and neglected.

Lee's advice includes the "why," not just the "how" that most pruning books concentrate upon. He makes the often dry subject of pruning easy to swallow with a spoon full of all sorts of interesting and helpful information... I bet you didn't know that Japanese wisteria twines clockwise while the Chinese species climbs counterclockwise. I'll leave you with a final observation on the latter. After seeing numerous structures literally torn apart by wisteria, I'm going to plant it as a tree -- per a commonly used method suggested by the author.

I love my pruning tome done by the American Horticultural Society, but, The Pruning Book is also "a keeper."

4 out of 5 stars A Good Introduction to Pruning.......2000-06-07

Although this book doesn't cover the most sophisticated aspects of pruning in detail (like grafting), it will give you a firm grasp of the basics, including when to prune, and how to do it. Various general types of trees are treated, like conifers, deciduous trees, fruits, bushes, etc. Simple yet attractive line drawings fill the book and are very helpful.

                                          Book Description

Art historians, traditionally, have implicitly accepted the autonomy of the artwork and ignored what Mary Anne Staniszewski calls "the power of display." In this groundbreaking examination of installation design as an aesthetic medium and cultural practice, Staniszewski offers the first history of exhibitions at the most powerful and influential modern art museum--The Museum of Modern Art in New York. Focusing on over two hundred photographs of the visually rich but overlooked history of exhibitions, Staniszewski documents and deciphers an essential chapter of twentieth-century art and culture and provides a historical and theoretical framework for a primary area of contemporary aesthetic practice--installation-based art.

Staniszewski treats installations as creations that manifest values, ideologies, politics, and of course aesthetics. Incorporating analysis of display techniques used in department stores, natural history museums, non-Western art galleries, and the international avant-gardes' exhibitions of the first half of the century, she makes visible both the explicit and covert meanings found in exhibitions. Some of the questions she addresses are: What sorts of viewers do different types of installations "create"? How do exhibition designs affect the meanings and receptions of specific objects, images, artifacts, and buildings when they are displayed? How do installations shape the viewer's experience of the cultural ritual of a museum visit? How does an amnesia regarding exhibition design affect art history, the art world, and collective cultural memories?

Among the artists, designers, architects, and curators whose installations the author features are Dennis Adams, Alfred H. Barr, Jr., Herbert Bayer, René d'Harnoncourt, Ray and Charles Eames, Hans Haacke, David Hammons, Philip Johnson, Frederick Kiesler, Barbara Kruger, Louise Lawler, El Lissitzky, Adrian Piper, Lilly Reich, William Rubin, Paul Rudolph, Edward Steichen, Giuseppe Terragni, and Kirk Varnedoe.

excellent compilation, although spencer r crew and james e sims' article 'locating authenticity: fragments of a dialogue' can be repetitive, it makes excellent points in the section 'some locations of authenticity'.

                                              Book Description

In Museum Skepticism, art historian David Carrier traces the birth, evolution, and decline of the public art museum as an institution meant to spark democratic debate and discussion. Carrier contends that since the inception of the public art museum during the French Revolution, its development has depended on growth: on the expansion of collections, particularly to include works representing non-European cultures, and on the proliferation of art museums around the globe. Arguing that this expansionist project has peaked, he asserts that art museums must now find new ways of making high art relevant to contemporary lives. Ideas and inspiration may be found, he suggests, in mass entertainment such as popular music and movies.

Carrier illuminates the public role of art museums by describing the ways they influence how art is seen: through their architecture, their collections, the narratives they offer museum visitors. He insists that an understanding of the art museum must take into account the roles of collectors, curators, and museum architects. Toward that end, he offers a series of case studies, showing how particular museums and their collections evolved. Among those who figure prominently are Baron Dominique Vivant Denon, the first director of the Louvre; Bernard Berenson, whose connoisseurship helped Isabella Stewart Gardner found her museum in Boston; Ernest Fenollosa, who assembled much of the Asian art collection now in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Albert Barnes, the distinguished collector of modernist painting; and Richard Meier, architect of the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles. Carrier’s learned consideration of what the art museum is and has been provides the basis for understanding the radical transformation of its public role now under way.

                                                Book Description

The protests that shook France in 1968 served as a catalyst to a radical reconsideration of artistic practice that has shaped both art and museum exhibitions up to the present. Rebecca DeRoo examines how issues of historical and personal memory, the separation of public and private domains, and the ordinary objects of everyday life emerged as central concerns for museums and for artists, as both struggled to respond to the protests. She argues that the responses of the museums were only partially faithful to the aims of the reform movement. Museums, in fact, often misunderstood and misrepresented the work of artists exhibited as a means of addressing these concerns.

The introduction looks at Nkanu arts within Central African artistic traditions associated with rites of passage. The introductory essay describes the customs of the Nkanu peoples. The author looks at the artistic and craft traditions of the local artisans and examines the secret language that their masks and sculpture convey. This little book fell off the bookstore shelf in front of me while I was browsing so I knew it was meant for me to buy and read. It was also the first time I felt so inspired to write to the author to say how much his writing moved me. The book tells of his travels around the Western US while trying to find direction in his life but it is really a heart to heart talk with the reader. You will feel like you have an author for a best friend and you will never forget the beauty of how he puts his words together.

This American poet writer delivers songs in sentences and has a singular voice that calls out to you long after the book is lost on the shelf. His words don't just stay with you, but the spirit of a decent man does too. An engaging, funny, reflective, lyrical read.

Luis writes from his soul; he is a wonderful person and it shows in his work. Kirkus doesn't know what he/she's talking about...Luis is one of the world's greatest writers, and one of my favorite people. I hope he's happy and well. I am, Nicolina

I knew Luis and the other half of this "troubled marriage" (Kirkus Review) that ended. She left, he fell apart, she fell apart. But that was seven years ago! He's remarried and she has a two year-old by someone else! This is one of the great writers of our time; surely he can find something more interesting to think and write about. P.S. where do you want me to send your dad's records???

It is a shame that Amazon.com has to put on-line the review by Kirkus. I don't know who wrote it--he didn't sign his name--but I wouldn't be surprised if it was a jealous, inferior writer lashing out with his tiny pen.

The shame is this: Wandering Time is a fine book. A great book. One of the best books I have read. Urrea's language has a music all its own. That's as clear as I can say it. He knows the word-music, the secret combination that strings the right sounds together in the right order--turns the language into something better, something sweeter than it is for the rets of us, something delicious.

The Kirkus review sounds an awful lot like what they said about Mozart. In that regard it is appropriate. But in no other way.
