Customer Reviews:
Another terrific book by Kasey Michaels !.......2007-04-24
I've read and enjoyed a lot of different genres in fiction, but Kasey Michaels' "Maggie" series truly has it all. The heroine is a writer who combines Regency romance with mystery, and "somehow" her characters, Alexandre, Viscount St. Just, and his sidekick have come to life! Plenty of murder mysteries to solve, romance between Maggie and Alex, humor, and a peek inside what it's like to be a writer. I'm collecting the entire series in paperback.
Maggie Without a Clue.......2006-02-15
When Maggie Kelley's agent, Bernie, calls tearfully informing her that Buddy is dead, Maggie thinks her friend is simply drunk again, at first. To the best of Maggie's knowledge, Bernie's ex-husband has been dead nearly seven years. However, when Maggie, along with Alex and Sterling, the two characters who have made her a best selling author and come to life literally, arrive at Bernie's, they find that yes, Buddy is in the bed, with his head almost taken off thanks to a deep knife slash. Fortunately, Alex, the Viscount St. Just is one of the best detectives ever invented and has a cool head on his shoulders. Taking charge, he sets things in motion for Bernie to be capably defended and starts his own investigation. If only Bernie's problems were all Maggie and Alex had to face! Recently, St. Just and Sterling agreed to housesit for Maggie's neighbor, and it looks like the old lady did something to get the mob afer her. First, they trash the house, and St. Just's big screen TV, then they kidnap Sterling, his valet. Yet, St. Just is as amazing as Maggie invented him to be, and can handle two cases at once and perhaps further his pursuit of Maggie along the way.
**** This series is just plain fun. St. Just, Sterling, and Maggie are easy to love. Ms. Michaels deftly shifts the voices telling the story, smoothly covering all the bases. Humor, drama, romance, what more could a reader want in one book? Easily, this is one of the best romantic mystery series in the land. ****

Wasted potential.......2006-01-06
There's a lot of potential in the storyline and the idea of satirising its own genre with a fictional Regency hero come to life. The Amazon review episode was a nice touch. Still, on the whole, the writing doesn't quite fulfil the potential. It doesn't sparkle, it's not quite witty enough, the characters are a tad too hysterical and Saint Just just feels out of place. Maggie is meant to be endearing but comes across as a scatterbrain. The only real solid character is the policeman and he's underdeveloped. The book becomes tedious after a while.
Fabulous series.......2005-07-05
This is the 3rd in the series and continues to get better and better. I can't wait for the next one.
simplistic.......2005-03-15
I love quirky mysteries, so I really looked forward to this book. It was horrible--one of the dumbest books I've seen in years. The writing was simplistic, immature, sexist, and boring. I can't imagine a grown adult feeling interested in this grade-school level junk. The remarks of the characters were so sexist, I was sure I'd picked up an old book by mistake--I sure was surprised to see it was published in 2004, not 1940! Yes, I am over the age of 13, but there's no way anyone over the age of 13 would like this book, it's written at a 6th-grade level.
Book Description
H P Lovecraft called THE NIGHT LAND "One of the most potent pieces of macabre imagination ever written".
It is a very rich and strange book, set in a monster-haunted world where the remanents of humanity have retreated to a great arcology, the Last Redoubt. The sun has died, and not a star shines in the black heavens: the Days of Light are less than a legend.
Unfortunately, William Hope Hodgson wrote his masterpiece in a style that makes it almost impenetrable to the casual reader, and his book is almost unknown today. But we believe the vision and power of the original story deserves to be spread widely, and we have assembled this anthology of tales set in the Night Land for modern readers.
Notable contributors to this anthology include John C Wright (THE GOLDEN AGE) and James Stoddard (THE HIGH HOUSE)
Customer Reviews:
A Conflicted Review.......2005-09-14
If I were to rate this book solely on the basis of its stories, I would give it 4 or possibly 5 stars. The long John C. Wright story is probably the outstanding entry, though a few others, including editor Andy Robertson's concluding "The Eater", are also excellent. Part of what makes these two stories so effective is that they fully convey the dread of the nightmarish Night Land which surrounds the remaining members of Humanity many millions of years in the future. A few of the earlier stories in the book aren't so effective at this.
My complaints lie in the serious production problems which mar the book. It has THE worst copy editing I have ever seen in any professional publication. Almost every page is afflicted with multiple errors, usually missing words, duplicate words, inappropriate words, misplaced words or phrases, and other mistakes that don't show up in a pass through a spell checker. These hundreds of mistakes are very distracting. If I were one of the writers in this book I would be upset about the poor presentation of my stories. Robertson's own stories are less afflicted by these errors.
A lesser irritation is the book's page headers. The left hand ones give the title of the book, and the right hand ones identify the editor, on every single page. In every other anthology on my shelf, these headers are used to identity the title and often the author of the story I'm reading. I shouldn't have to refer to the contents to remember the title and author of whatever I'm reading.
I wish I could give this book the full praise the stories deserve. I am told that any future volumes in this series will be professionally copy edited.
Eerie, Dark and Wonderful.......2005-09-03
Hodgson's The Night Land was a great book, marred by the very painfully awful prose that Hodgson chose to use. The concept, though, is chilling. In this book, you have the concept wonderfully explored, and the writing is much easier to access. All of the stories were at the very least good, and some were incredibly good. I loved "Mouse in the Walls of the Lesser Redoubt" and "Eater", but all were well worth reading. If you like your horror with a scifi edge, but still chilling and horrifying, please read this book. It's well worth the time, and the money. I am very eagerly awaiting Volume 2.
Wright story outstanding.......2004-09-05
The story "Awake in the Night" by John C. Wright (alluded to in the above review) was included in the 2003 Year's Best Science Fiction edited by Gardner Dozois. It was probably my favorite piece in this 600+ page anthology. The world described in the "Night Lands" ouerve is fascinating. Based on this one work I was eager to read more and to seek out this particular book.
What a Terrific Collection.......2004-03-24
Do you like far future stories? Do you like Gene Wolfe and Jack Vance's time of the long shadows? Do you thrill to Smith's Zothique? Well then you've probably tried Hodgson's Nightland.
I suspect many who tried to read Hodgson's masterpiece have had the same reaction I did, "great idea, horrible execution". I never made it through the original and always wished someone would have taken his idea and cleaned up the archiac prose. Well my wish was granted! This is a spectacular collection that only makes me want to give Hodgson another go. After finishing the Robertson and Wright stories I promptly ordered everything I could find in print. John C. Wright also has a particularly moving paen to Hodgson directed to blockheads like myself who dismissed Nightland because of stylistics.
(If there are any John C. Wright fans out there, his contribution in the form of a novellete is breathtaking)

In contrast to its tabloid title, The Sex-Starved Marriage offers candid and sensible counsel for couples with mismatched libidos. Seasoned sex therapist Michele Weiner-Davis skewers two stereotypes about sex in marriage. First, she jettisons the idea that husbands are hot and wives are not, giving examples of "low-desire" men in her practice. Next, she upends the longstanding model of sexual response and advises readers: "Just do it. Desire is a decision. Once the low-interest partner allows him/herself to be touched and aroused, this will trigger a strong desire to continue being sexual." The strength of her approach to the causes of sexual stalemate lies in her insights about the struggles of both partners. Her suggestions (how to break the ice, how to court your partner, nag busting, and the Hallmark solution) are not gimmicky and are presented as techniques for couples, not individuals. Weakened only by a final chapter--one that discloses too many details about the author's marriage--this perceptive book will inspire couples to add heat and light to their marriage. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Bring the spark back into your bedroom and your relationship with gutsy and effective advice from bestselling author Michele Weiner Davis.
It is estimated that one of every three married couples struggles with problems associated with mismatched sexual desire. Do you? If you want to stop fighting about sex and revitalize your intimate connection with your spouse, then you need this book. In The Sex-Starved Marriage, bestselling author Michele Weiner Davis will help you understand why being complacent or bitter about ho-hum sex might cost you your relationship.
Full of moving firsthand accounts from couples who have struggled with the erosion of sexual desire and rebuilt their passionate connection, The Sex-Starved Marriage addresses every aspect of the sexual libido problem:
- If you're the more highly sexed partner, you'll breathe a sigh of relief. At last someone understands your feelings about the void in your marriage. Discover why your pleas for touch have fallen upon deaf ears and why your approach to the lull in your sexual relationship could be a sexual turnoff. Most important, learn new ways to motivate your spouse to take your needs for more physical closeness to heart.
- If you're the spouse with a lagging libido, you're far from alone. You'll learn about the physiological and psychological factors, including unresolved relationship issues, that may contribute to the chill in your bedroom and what you can do to melt the ice. And if you're a man, you'll be surprised to learn that staggering numbers of men, even men whose sexual machinery works just fine, "get headaches" too!
The Sex-Starved Marriage will give you and your spouse the inspiration, encouragement, and answers you need.
Customer Reviews:
I am so grateful that I found this book.......2007-05-21
This is the best relationship book I have ever read. My wife and I have argued about sex for years. I read about this book in an article somewhere, then I found the author's website and read more about it. It sounded good so I went and bought it. I read it cover to cover in a few hours. I couldn't believe how the author nailed our situation completely. I have been wanting more sex than my wife and she has been totally insensitive to me and my needs. She also hasn't had a clue as to why sex is so important to me. I want to feel closer to her and I want her to want me. She's been clueless. I really wanted her to read this book but I was sure she wouldn't. This isn't a problem for her...it's my problem. But for some reason, she was willing to read this book, at least parts of it and she totally understood where I was coming from. Although I don't expect miracles, she has been a lot more receptive to being physical. It's pretty hard to believe this could happen from reading a book, but it has. I hope it lasts. But in the mean time, I am so grateful I found this book. I highly recommend it to any couple whose sex drives don't match.
almost perfect little read.......2007-04-11
This is mostly a "Just do it" book. Its a quick read that flows well and gives you the information you need. The only thing it didn't get right for me was taking into consideration that some people have had a lot of sex before the start of a long term relationship... then it pitters out in the long haul. However the information given on how many people feel during the lack of desire times was great.
Focuses on both the low desire partner and the higher desire partner well.
Differences in Libido.......2006-08-03
Weiner's non-nonsense approach to marriage and sex was utterly refreshing. For those who are turned off by the title, this book isn't just about sex starvation-- it's about high libido and low libido, and how happiness in marriage takes effort.
Weiner states that while some couples are happy enough to be sexually matched, in most marriages there is a high libidio partner and a low libido partner. The best part about this book is that it doesn't assume men always want sex and women are always shoving them away-- there are some marriages where women are always initiating and men would rather have sex once in a blue moon.
That said, Weiner doesn't blame either partner for their sexual differences. She gives realistic help for both sides and emphasizes that marriage is WORK. Sexual attraction, even if you have it from the beginning, may change with age, stress, or other factors. It isn't up to you to blame your partner-- it's up to you to learn your spouse's love language.
I highly recommend this to every couple, especially newlyweds. You don't need a sex-starved marriage to pick out the pearls from this book.
overdue help.......2006-07-13
brings to light issues that don't point fingers at someone but rather points out negative conditions that may be existing without the respective parties being aware of the influences at work!
Best Relationship book.......2006-03-18
This book was wonderful! Not only helpful for the intimate part of the marriage but for having a fantastic, caring marriage overall!! I would highly recommend it for either spouse.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2005-08-13
It had some great stuff in it! I was expecting it to be actual remedies, but it had some good information for the first time owner. I also was extremely happy to see the section warning about raw meat.
Great Doggie Wisdom.......1999-12-23
I think this is one of the greatest books I've ever read. We've had dogs all of my life, and this book has some wonderful tips on everything you could ever want to know.
Kudos to Kim Campbell Thortnon and Dr. Fortney! Our dog is 2 and is a beautiful Husky, however he really likes to put our hands in his mouth. We've had some awful advice from trainers - even AKC trainers that I wouldn't even consider. This book has helped immensely!
Customer Reviews:
an excellent primer, but..........2001-11-21
...I disagree with the author saying that "every rug needs a degree of breathing space". I realize that is a Westernized viewpoint, and tastes vary...but these beautiful one-of-a-kind works of art were originaly intended to cover a tent floor...to the point of overlapping at times ! My preference is to see them in close proximity to each other, a glorious mosaic of rich color and design.
I also disagree with the statement that the rug has to "match its surroundings", which is like buying a painting to match the sofa. To my way of thinking, a piece of art, whether a painting or rug, should give one an uplifting thrill, not "match" something.
The first 4 chapters are on everything from detailed descriptions of how rugs are made, where to buy them, their care and repair, and the ethnic groups worldwide that make them.
This is followed by brilliantly colored illustrations of 44 rugs and 3 bags, from the marvelous Belouch animal design that graces the cover to a Navaho pictorial flatweave.
Chapter 5 is about the designs, and how to identify them. Chapter 6 is on the regions (maps are included). 7 and 8 are on the tribal groups, from those in Adraskand, to the Yurks, and describes the patterns, colors, and quality produced by each group.
So though I don't agree with the decorating ideas, it's 5 stars for the research and remarkable detail that has been put into this volume. It's an excellent primer, as well as a good reference book.
However little you know you'll snap up better buys!.......1999-10-08
If you wouldn't know a Kilim if it bit you in the leg, you'll soon be able to do a lot more than just bluff your way in the world of rugs! This book takes you through it all quite painlessly!
Beautifully illustrated with full colour pictures of rugs from all around the world, it is a pleasure to leaf through as much as to read for its detailed information on what makes these wonderful rugs what they are.
Maps, texts and illustrations take you through the cultural and practical aspects of rug design and manufacture. For the professional dealer or the enthusiastic amateur like me, this is an indispensable book! Anyone who has read it will know how much better equipped they are to snap up the best buys with confidence.
Book Description
Following the success of A Passion for Flowers, Carolyne Roehm's seasonal notebooks have established themselves as essential resource guides for gardening and entertaining. Each notebook features recipes and menus related to the specific season and to holidays within that season, as well as gardening tips - both practical and armchair. The books are also remarkable for their stunning design, with large, color photographs which embody the themes of beauty and grace. Now, in one specially designed slipcase, all four notebooks are available as a year-round source of pleasure and information.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful and a good read too!.......2003-08-11
Of all the Carolyne Roehm books, this set is my favorite. It had some practical gardening tips as well as the flower arrangements and recipes. If you are expecting a gardening "how to" book, this is not the one. However, the books are beautiful and I enjoyed each one. It gave me many ideas for my own home. I will never have a budget that allows me to purchase 12 dozen roses for one display, however, many of her ideas can be implemented on a smaller scale with less expensive florals. The color combinations were inspiring as well as the examples of matching floral displays to the surroundings. If you love flowers and beautiful table scapes, you will love this book.

A seasonal cookbook with a lot of flowers. Not much design help whatsoever. Not what I wanted

Good intentions tend to bloom and fade like a perennial: next year, you'll dig up the border by the front walk and install those delphiniums you've always wanted; next year, you'll put up those abundant tomatoes so you can savor them during the depths of winter. To realize those good intentions, try organizing them with fashion designer and author Carolyne Roehm's Summer Notebook. Or, if your creative fields lie fallow once in a while (and whose don't?), borrow the seed of an idea from Roehm, who broadcasts her favorites for everyone's benefit.
This is a notebook (complete with grid paper for planning, lined pages for notes, and pouches for clippings), garden-design and flower color-combination guide, garden journal, recipe book--in essence, it's an idea book, a place to record your ideas and learn from Roehm's. The grounds of her Connecticut home, Weatherstone, serve as the canvas for her botanical muse. In the course of showing off her gardening victories, as well as admitting to her failures, we get chapters on Roehm's potager, inspired by Louis XIV's geometrically laid-out kitchen garden at Versailles; her quest for the perfect perennial border; the extreme state of her hydrangea envy and rose obsession; details of a Fourth of July celebration and a summer wedding held at Weatherstone; odes to peaches, corn, and tomatoes; and an "end paper" on the dread Japanese beetle.
All this, along with abundant color photos, recipes, floral-arrangement tips, and helpful hints like how to make your own floral preservative, make this inaugural installment in the Notebook series (Fall is next, of course) a unique addition to any avid gardener's library. --Stefanie Durbin
