After all, if he is willing to commit one felony by kidnapping his daughter, what's to prevent him from murdering her mother?
Despite overtones of O.J.--Brian is also accused of occasionally resorting to violence--there is much to enjoy here: Edna's toilet-training philosophy, Maura's precociousness, and the suburban South's peculiar social dimensions (just what constitutes white trash, anyway?) provide much to chuckle over. Callahan and her band of merry mop-bearers take on the police, Brian's mother-in-law, and even Brian himself to demonstrate his innocence so that he can stay out of jail and secure custody. Callahan is an admirable and entertaining heroine. Kathy Hogan Trocheck has a lighter touch than Sarah Paretsky or Sue Grafton, and Callahan is rarely as unforgivably foolhardy as counterparts V.I. Warshawski or Kinsey Milhone can be. With Callahan and her more charming relations at the novel's heart, Midnight Clear offers jolly holiday reading with both poignant and hilarious moments. --K. My favorite Callahan Garrity novel!.......2006-09-28
I love all of the Callahan Garrity books, and I own the entire series. This was my favorite out of all them. The suspense and twists and turns keep you on the edge of your seat, but the humor and heart are the backbone of the books. I love that the Callahan books are set in Atlanta; it's so much more refreshing than the typical New York or LA settings that many books use. I wish Ms Trocheck would write more Callahan books, but from what I can see, she has moved on to romances (written under the name Mary Kay Andrews) which are still good, but not as good as Callahan.
On a Midnight Clear.......2005-09-11
I adore all of Callahan Gerrity Mysteries and this one was the fiest de resistance. I could not put it down. I ate, slept and drank every word and loved it....Kathy Trochek is a master of description and weaver of mystery. Just loved it.
An Exciting Holiday Who-Done-It.......2003-10-15
It's a few days before Christmas, and sometimes disorganized Callahan Garrity, actually has things under control for a change. That is, until her deadbeat brother, Brian, shows up after 10 long years, with a toddler, Maura, who he says is his daughter. Callahan is always used to trouble following Brian, so when she finds out that he's actually kidnapped Maura from his estranged wife, she's not surprised. But, when Brian's ex-wife is found dead, the lead suspect is Brian. And though Callahan knows that he's many things, she knows that he's no murderer. So now it's time for her, her hilarious mother, Edna, and the employees of the House Mouse Cleaning Service to do some serious detective work around Atlanta, before Christmas is ruined for everyone.
This was my first Callahan Garrity mystery, and I was not one bit disappointed. Callahan, and her mother Edna are two hilarious characters, and the mother/daughter relationship between the two of them is absolutely fantastic. Whether you're a mystery lover, or a fan of family drama's, this is a must-have this holiday season.

EXCELLENT HOLIDAY MYSTERY.......2002-12-18
I deliberately waited over a year to purchase and read Midnight Clear by my favorite mystery author, Kathy Hogan Trocheck. I've always paced myself with her books because there aren't that many to begin with plus it's been over 3 years since KHT last wrote one. I hope that she is working on something new, because all of us Callahan Garrity fans are anxiously awaiting the next mystery featuring Callahan, Edna & the rest of the House Mouse cleaning crew! As for Midnight Clear-it just doesn't get any better than this. Kid brother Brian, who had been in absentia for 10 years suddenly shows up at Edna's doorstep with a surprise in his truck-a 3 year old girl named Maura. There is a major murder mystery for Callahan to solve, but it looks like Brian is the prime suspect-his ex-wife is found murdered in her bed. You'll find yourself rapidly turning the pages until you reach the surprise ending, KHT pulls out all the stops with this one. Once you reach the very end, however, you realize you want more books to come out featuring Callahan Garrity & co. As the previous reviewer mentioned, if only Ms. Trocheck would write as often as Sue Grafton does! Very highly recommended-along with all of her other books. Enjoy!
Best of Callahan Series.......2001-04-05
I've become somewhat of a Callahan Garrity junkie, and only wish that Kathy Hogan Trocheck would write more, more, more, and much faster. Come on, Grafton is up to her her sixteenth in her series, and I'd much prefer Trocheck to have written that many. This installment in enjoyable House Mouse land is the best yet, funny, suspenseful and well-rounded.
It's Christmas time in Candler Park, and Callahan and her goofy mother Edna are gearing up for the holidays. Out of the blue, Callahan's long lost brother Brian shows up, with an unexpected holiday package: his 3 year old daughter Maura. Edna is overjoyed with her new found granddaughter, but when Brian confesses that he has practically stolen her from his unreliable, trashy ex-wife, then vanishes for days leaving little Maura with Edna and the not-so-motherly Callahan, things start getting messy very fast. When the ex-wife is found murdered in her apartment, Brian is the main suspect, and Callahan is up to her ears in a new case, more personal than ever this time.
Trocheck never fails to mix in humor and suspense, and it abounds in Midnight Clear. Adding in more Atlanta history and new settings in the southern suburbs and the abandoned, long-ago Funtown, Callahan fights to clear her brother's name and to keep Maura safe. A delightful read, with twists and turns, and an unlikable new character in Brian, Midnight Clear is Trocheck's best to date.

Shadow Steed was a fantastic book! Very well written, Mr. Knaak transports you to the magical world of the DragonRealm. Very captivating. I also cried at the end.
This book makes for a good read if you like fantasy; it's a bit dark, so I rate it PG-13. ^_^ No profanity or sexual content, it's just dark.
A BEAUTIFUL READ!.......1999-12-16
This book was great! I was so into it that I finished in a day! I laughed with Darkhorse, I smiled with Erini, I lost my mind with Shade, I died with Drayfitt, I helped save 'Aurim Bedlam' with Cabe and Gwen,I gasped at the sight of Nimth, and I even cried at the end ( If you have read it you know what I am talking about, but I don't want to spoil the ending if you haven't). I felt so comfertable with the characters because they were so real (You're Real! ). I was blinded by the tears in my eyes the first time I read it but when I re-read it when I got control over myself, I picked up a hint that there was a possibility that Shade was still alive. I have not read the later ones so I don't know, but I am dying to read them! To summarize: If you haven't read Shadow Steed, you have missed the adventure of a lifetime!

I think this book was excellently written because it blended an interesting plot with a large amount of detail. The book had a fast pace so it would apeal to younger readers or people who enjoy action books. Richard Knaak paints a perfect picture of the battle of an eternal steed against a foe of unimaginable power. A must-read for fantacy lovers.

Not what I expected.......2007-07-25
I stopped reading this book by chapter 2. There are parts that are very humorous, however, the author gives details on various things she or people she interviewed that scared the "you know what" out of me. Every symptom that she described, I swore I was developing. There may be some women out there who want to know all of this stuff, but not me. I have other books that aren't as graphic as this one and are making my pregnancy more enjoyable. If I could return this book for a full refune, I would.

This book was given to me as a gift. I'm in my 5th month of pregnancy but the information about the first trimester still helped my perspective in dealing with accepting this pregnancy. It's very informative with information that you won't find in any of the other publications on the market. I laughed and cried. I enjoyed the stories from other celebrities. A definite read for other "Mocha Mommas" out there.
Great book! A Must Read!.......2007-01-23
This book was the best! I am not pregnant yet, but am in "research mode" before we start trying and I would definitely rec'd it to others in a similar position. It was really informative of not only letting you know what to physically expect prior to and during pregnancy but also what physical issues specifically relate to black women (as well as issues related to relationships, finances, and preparing for the little one). This was a very refershing and honest look at pregnancy - I especially enjoyed the personal stories sprinkled throughout the book. This book had me laughing and engaged the entire time - I finished the book in a weekend!!!!

Kimberly Allers has the ability to speak the truth like only a sistah can. Not only is the book very informative for the pertinent health issues but it is also very entertaining. She chose a variety of sources for stories from experience; famous actors, physicians to the everyday woman. What more could you want from a comfort stand point. I would recommend this book to everyone I know. My husband and I are preparing to extend our family and he enjoyed the chapters just as much as I did. There's nothing more precious then your husband watching you crack up over chapters pertaining to gas and mood swings during pregnancy. The Mocha Manual to a Fabulous Preganancy is a treasure to keep forever, with additional editions for any pertinent health updates, of course:) Thanks girl!
Excellent and Extremely Hillarious Read.......2006-08-12
I have been waiting to get a copy of this book from my public library for weeks. I was the first person on the list. One day I dropped in Hueman Book store on 125th Street in Harlem and as soon as I opened the book to the first page it had me laughing out loud. The book is an excellent read. It keeps readers informed, and laughing which is a great way to keep from crying. With all of the diffrent emotions that i am going through this book helped to keep me sane. I related to a lot of the information that was given in the book and it gave me some relief to find out that other women were going through the same things. This is the first pregnancy book that I know I am going to read from cover to cover. It keeps me interested and entertained.

Nice Cookbook.......2007-10-10
I purchased this cookbook several months ago. I actually have both Best of the Best Texas I AND II... This first edition is a nice cookbook, a lot of nice recipes, but not so much of the tastes I have come to know and love here in Texas. HOWEVER, the Second Edition, Best of the Best Texas II is a far better cookbook. I highly recommend it-much more interesting and tasty recipes.
Great Food - Great Book!.......2002-02-19
This was one of the very first cookbooks I ever purchased and it has been a mainstay in my kitchen ever since. The recipes are clear and concise. Not to mention all the recipes are incredibly delicious. I was raised in Austin and now reside in Colorado so it was great to take this cookbook with me. My family and I love the brisquet recipe, the chicken fried steak, king ranch chicken and countless others. It was also nice to be able to bring some of the great food I grew up on into my own kitchen and prepare these meals for friends and family. This is definitely a cookbook for anyone who loves southern, texmex and the in between. I highly recommend it. Texans definitely know how to cook!

Indispensable book on American oak furniture.......2002-02-14
This book is a rare find. I have never seen a book with so many color photographs depicting numerous examples of American oak furniture. It covers every type of furniture you can imagine. The accompanying text is expertly organized as a narrative as well as a reference text providing descriptions of the furniture supplemented with a glossary of terminology. This is a highly distinguished publication.
Should be titled "American Golden Oak Furniture.......2001-03-09
This book has helped me immensely in identifying different styles of furniture especially nowadays when there is such a highbred of types. I feel more comfortable rummaging antique shops. However Golden Oak does not necessarily imply American? So I was disappointed in not finding any "Harris Lebus" (England) brand furniture in the book. This book is a keeper and needs to be reviewed periodically to keep the different styles in ones mind. If you have not guessed this is a picture book.

This is a nice book showing pictures of some very nice golden oak antique furniture. It shows many high-end examples and a few of the more common items. The price guide is very optimistic in my opinion, at least for the mid-west region of the country. This is a nice follow up to the original Golden Oak book and I highly recommend it if you are an anitique furniture enthusiast.
