Book Description
Missionary Stew follows political fundraiser Draper Haere on a quest to uncover the secret behind a right-wing coup in an unnamed Central American country. Haere seeks the information in order to get dirt on his boss's opponent in the 1984 U.S. Presidential election. Haere's pursuit of the truth repeatedly puts his life in danger, as the powers-that-be stop at nothing to keep the episode buried.

Keeping a lot of balls in the air.......2007-03-05
Ross Thomas just had the knack of creating unusual situations, and unusual characters, and then having everything interact toward a satisfying conclusion. This book is another one of his well-crafted thriller-type writings, where you are introduced to a disparate cast of characters who seem totally unrelated to each other but, by the end of the book, all fit nicely into the confines of the plot. This one is a bit more gruesome than some of his, for there are several deaths, but they are all in the service of advancing the plot line. Read this book and see a master of the genre at work!
Quality Ross Thomas work.......2006-04-07
I'm a sucker for Ross Thomas and this is a fine example of his work. Starts with an interesting look at the former Central African Empire from the perspecutive of our hero who is a prisoner in one of their jails. It then moves to the usual Thomas complex but understandable political plot. Thomas just has a feel for topics that blend a foreign event with domestic political dirty tricks. It's just a good read.
Fast and oh, so smooth..........2005-06-29
This is my favorite Ross Thomas novel and that's really saying something, the competition is fierce. The writing is spare and tight and the dialog is first-rate, nobody writes (wrote?) with such a keen ear for the way people speak. Thomas is funny and cynical, this complex story unfolds at breakneck speed. Thomas had an interesting history, working for a union, in business and as political consultant (slipping in time to write some fine novels and a couple of screenplays, one for the interesting movie Bad Company). How did he accomplish so much in this novel in only 70,000-odd words? Pure magic.
Ken Coffman is the author of Steel Waters, Alligator Alley, Twisted Shadow and other novels.
A first rate satire........2005-02-15
Missionary Stew by Ross Thomas is a wickedly irreverent satiric novel that is both fast paced and hilarious.
There are two main characters, Draper Haere and Morgan Citron. Haere makes his living in the world of politics. He's not a politician himself. Rather he operates behind the scenes to advance the agendas of politicians he works for. Morgan Citron is an investigative reporter who has been traumatized by a rather unpleasant 13 month stay in an African jail and is conflicted about returning to work.
An incident of some sort has ocurred in a Central American country. The details of this incident are sketchy, but it seems that whenever someone learns what has happened, that person winds up dead.
Haere's current client is Baldwin Veatch, the governor-elect of California and a presidential hopeful. Haere has reason to believe that the incident being covered up constitutes an embarassing scandal for the sitting President. Therefore, if he can expose the secret, his client's chances of becoming President will be greatly enhanced. So, Haere hires Citron to use his investigative skills to unravel the mystery.
The plot of Missionary Stew is exceedingly complex. As the narrative advances, the reader learns of all manner of complications. Playing key roles are: a redneck Floridian drug runner, the CEO of a National Inquirer type tabloid who happens to be Citron's own mother, a corrupt Central American general, as well as various and sundry members and ex-members of the intelligence community.
Suffice it to say that the book's characters are all very interesting and delightfully eccentric. Moreover, the dialogue is quite snappy and has an understated wit about it that is genuinely entertaining.
If you like your political novels to have byzantine plots, quirky characters, clever dialogue and cynical points of view, by all means read this book. You'll love it.
excellent.......2000-02-18
This book is extremely interesting -- not at all in the style of most mysteries, it offers a surprisingly introspective look at the key characters. The beginning is rather bizarre. Get through it, and you will really enjoy the rest.

Great!.......2000-04-02
In this book, Marrientie's aunt, (or great-aunt) shows her a golden matchbox that her father received from some stranger. Inside the box, there is a roll of parchment that is a gameborad, complete with game pieces and dice. Whn Marrinette rolls the dice and places a malchtine mouse on the starting square, she is immediently transported to another universe, (so to speak) and has been transformed into a malchintine mouse. When others follow her, trying to resuce her, they all discover a plan worse than any they could have dreamed of, a plan to take over the world....

Good follow-up to the Endometriosis Sourcebook.......2007-01-20
This book is a follow-up to the Endometriosis Sourcebook, and makes more sense if you've read that one first. The first book has more details about causes and treatments. This book focuses on adding information learned in the ten years after the first one was written. I recommend both. If you can only afford one, buy the Sourcebook - even if you think you have found all there is to learn about this disease. I found the Sourcebook to be the most comprehensive of anything I could get my hands on. As a follow-up, this is really good reading, and I find myself looking forward to the next book to see what researchers can do to finally find a cure.
I would also like to add to a previous reviewer's comments ("Extremely Helpful Endo Reference Guide") and say that a total hysterectomy with removal of the ovaries is NOT necessarily a cure, either - despite the fact many women desperately seeking relief undergo this drastic measure. Women who have their ovaries removed go through tremendous suffering, only to find out their endo is still there, and they are still in pain.
After a laparotomy with one ovary removed, I woke to find myself suffering even more than before the surgery. Finally, years later, I was able to get a copy of the surgery report and found out that despite what I was told, the surgeon did NOT remove ALL the endo - only the active endo. Well, needless to say, I am about to go through yet another surgery with yet another doctor to remove the rest of the endo that is still causing me trouble. The best treatment is TOTAL removal of ALL endo. Read your surgery report. It is likely different and more detailed than what you've been told.
*Echos the disappointing sentiments*.......2006-08-14
I was excited to find a big thick book dedicated to endo. It seemed as if it quite possibly had to have everything that I needed to know about this disease. Wrong.
As noted by a previous reviewer...the book constantly refers back to another book, which after reading this book I can't even say I am tempted to read. Most of the book was dedicated to 'natural' therapies, the dangers of chemicals in our enviorment, and cancer.
I truly feel that there are very few women with endo who are going to benefit from this book. It is a giant list of DON'T's with very few do's. Any worthwhile information it actually provides has probably already been presented by a woman's doctor and/or any woman with this disease probably already knows about through previous research.
If you have endo, I wouldn't recommend this being your first book you pick up about it.
Disappointing.......2006-03-12
This book bills itself as a "complete reference for taking charge of your health," but much of it reads more like a compendium of personal anecdotes and rants (toxic chemicals are bad! very bad!) than a practical reference work. The information on drug therapies is potentially useful as a starting point, but for more substantial information on commonly used medications it repeatedly refers the reader to Ballweg's earlier "Endometriosis Sourcebook" (presumably to save space -- yet this book devotes 15 pages to reprinting a series of badly drawn cartoons from the earlier volume.) The section on surgery is padded with first-person narratives and fretful digressions about certification of surgeons and the risk of getting accidentally poked with a trocar or poisoned with hidden PVCs. The book is slanted toward alternative treatments and diet modification, with an inordinate amount of space devoted to a diet supposed to cure yeast allergies. While nutrition is obviously important to general health, the evidence presented for the success of this diet in treating endometriosis is anecdotal (and some of the anecdotes themselves are highly dubious or even comical, such as the letter from a woman who claims to have discovered that she is highly allergic to "grains" -- in which category she includes potatoes!). Given that the book is quick to point out the flaws in conventional medical treatment, it seems a bit irresponsible not to give equal time to the damage that desperate women can do to themselves with self-treatment and "natural" remedies. There are as many bad acupuncturists and quack nutritionists out there as there are bad gynecologists. What we really need is more solid, serious medical research, not more miracle diets or personal tales of suffering and empowerment. If you already own previous books by Ballweg and the Endometriosis Association and like their approach, you might be satisfied with this book, but if you're looking for a definitive reference on this agonizing and perplexing disease, you'll likely be disappointed. I certainly was.
Extremely Helpful Endo Reference Guide.......2005-12-17
My doctor specializing in endo treatment gave me this book, and I have found it very useful. I also have Mary Lou Ballweg's previous endo book, which is also great.
This Complete Reference compassionately discusses the pain, the symptoms, the medical diagnosis and treatments, immunotherapy and nutrition and how they help decrease symptoms, how endo can affect fertility, connections it may have to cancer, how it impacts menopause, how it affects teenagers...It also has motivating chapters on how we can stay strong and continue to be productive through our endo, but with reassuring messages that if the pain and procedures do affect our energy and mental health, what we can do to manage this stress. It also talks about new research and finally, how important it is to share our experience with other women.
I've had endo for probably over 10 years now. I've had 4 laparoscopies (need another one soon), and I've tried every procedure available. Women need to KNOW that there IS NO CURE. Pregnancy does NOT CURE endo. Some undereducated doctors that do not specialize in this disease mistakenly persuade hundreds of thousands of women to have a child when they may not be ready in hopes of curing their disease. Also, some of the procedures MAY cause temporarily symptom relief, but they WILL NOT CURE you of endo. I've been treated in a clinical trial by the best endo team in the world in Maryland, and with research, one day we may have a cure. At this time, we only know it is a stubborn and sometimes debilitating disease. But it does NOT define us. Surround yourself with supportive friends and family. If your doctor doesn't take the time you need to answer your many questions satisfactorily, find another. Respect your right to the best-possible healthcare. Do not be afraid of participating in clinical studies: You can help progress our understanding of the disease and possibly find a cure. They saved me tens of thousands of dollars on much-needed endo treatment for several years, and they supported my mental and emotional health as well.
Make The Right Choice For You And Be Healthy & Whole.......2004-03-16
Out of all the Endometriosis books that I have purchased, this is the only one that I refer to over and over again. I have lent it to friends that were in great need. It has dramatically helped them to make correct choices for them that their own doctors either did not mention or tried to undervalue its use because the procedure is too modern and/or they do not know how to do it. It's procedures, prescriptions and other information is very up to date. If you have been to many doctors, and have gotten the "learn to live with the pain or just get a hysterectomy" line, then buy this book and read it thoroughly. It will answer all of your concerns and help you make the right decision for you.

Chefs Review.......2007-08-16
As an Executive Chef who specializes in Caribbean Style product development I found it very refreshing to see such a wonderful example of a Caribbean Cookbook. I found the recipes to be clear, easy to follow and in some respects very creative. The photography is truly stunning and for once doesn't focus on sandy beaches and palm trees. The only thing I would like to have seen were some more modern recipes, maybe next time Virginia.
Excellent book.......2007-05-22
First, this book is beautiful to look at... great photos, full of colours, very Caribbean.
Then the recipes are very appealing and mouth watering and they don't come accross as too difficult to execute.
And most off all, so far all the recipes I have tried turned out to taste great and also look good.
I live in the Caribbean and the recipes in that book really seem to represent the islands.
The best cookery book I have bought in a long time.
Your Taste Buds will Make You Believe You're Really in the Caribbean.......2007-02-17
I went through my cookbooks, to see if I could weed some out, because I have too many to mention. It's hard getting rid of a cookbook, especially one with a few recipes in it that you've come to love. But I've scanned the recipes I need to keep forever into my MacBook. However, there were an even dozen I couldn't part with. These are books I turn to time and time again, even though I consider myself somewhat of a gourmet chef.
Ms. Burke's EAT CARIBBEAN is, in my opinion, absolutely indispensable. Her Jerk Chicken is delicious, and coming from me, someone who's had her own recipe for Jerk Chicken published, that is really saying something. You won't go wrong with this book. Ms. Burke is the marketing director for Walkerswood Caribbean Foods and they're the people who make the jerk seasoning that I, and so many others use, so it's not surprising that she really knows her stuff and if you get ahold of this book, you'll be cooking like you do to.

Reminds me of home!!.......2006-05-17
I actually stubbled across this book at the Sangster Airport in Montego Bay Jamaica. After reading about Virginia Burke at the back of the book I realized that she also grew up in the same district as I did in Walkerswood JA. Now that I have a personal connection to this book I was more than eager to begin to try some of the recipes.
The recipes are easy to follow and came out great. This is saying a lot for me since I just started cooking on a regular basis a year ago. What will instantly catch your eye about this book are the vibrant colors and the accruacy of the photos used.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who is either a novice or pro in the kitchen, or for anyone interested in trying their hand at cooking Carribean cuisine.
A Culinary Trip Through the Islands.......2005-09-23
The colorful cover caught my eye, but it's the creative and easy-to-prepare recipes inside that keep me coming back to this book regularly. This cookbook goes way beyond jerk, or adding a little pineapple or coconut to a dish. Author Virginia Burke is true to the cultural origins of dishes and the recipes are presented in an easy-to-understand and unpretentious manner. To my surprise, finding the ingredients in the U.S. has been quite managable. I have seen this author on TV once, and think she deserves a cooking show of her own. How fun it would be to take a weekly culinary trip through the islands with Virginia Burke.

great book for the dog "beginner".......2005-02-24
Before we actually started looking into a puppy, I wanted to know as much as possible about training them and how to deal with them. Even though some of the information in the book could easily be counted as applicable for most breeds, I loved the somewhat "different" and let me call it alternative approach of the book. It made me aware of some dangers and difficulties that are not mentioned in other books, eg food for puppies. Overall, a good book for the beginner!
Very Disappointing.......2005-01-17
This book is a waste of money unless you know nothing about dogs. If you want pertinant information specific to the Lab, then look elsewhere. The words "Laborador Retriever" could be deleted and the name of any dog breed inserted.
Must Have Book!!!!.......2004-08-16
What can I say about this book? Except that it was very informative and that it was very fun to read. I learned ALOT from this book. I would definately recommend it to all my friends and would-be dog owners. I've read 3 books about Labrador Retrievers and if I had to choose only one...I would choose this book over all of them. Very pleased and worth what I paid for.
Entertaining & Informative Primer On Labrador Retrievers!.......2004-03-06
Regardless of the title to the contrary, this is not a book for idiots, but rather a no nonsense nuts and bolts primer for the new caretaker of a the best dog breed yet devised by the Heavens; the Labrador Retriever. As someone who shares his house and life with four of God's single most nearly perfect craeature, I can testify as to the accuracy and relevance of all the information in this wonderful compendium. It is a literal treasure trive of data about how to raise and care for your new best friend, and it covers everything from potty training to kennel care.
As a personal note, it is improtant to remember how sensitive Labs are, that one never ever strikes one, and that gently scolding them will get you the reaction you want much more efficiently than would any unjustified corporal punishment. Just remember, friends, there are really no bad dogs; only ignorant and incompetent people trying in vain to train the dogs. What you need to avoid such pitfalls is all here! Enjoy!
About the Book from the Author.......2004-02-14
So you want to know about Labs? Well, they're certainly the most popular purebreds, but what makes them so special? Inside this book, you'll learn about Labrador Retrievers, their history and personality as well as hereditary diseases and activities.
Unlike many Lab books out there, this is a pet guide, aimed at the first time Lab owner. It's not intended to be a guide to show dogs or pedigrees (why would you consider picking up an Idiot's Guide if you want that?) This book deals with all facets of Labrador pet ownership and contrary to the title, I don't think you're an idiot if you check out this book.
Be my guest to peruse through the book online here and enjoy. This book is the winner of the DWAA Maxwell Award for 2003 as the best pet breed book.

A must read for all dog owners, Labradorian or otherwise!.......2000-06-02
I recommend this book to all dog owners, regardless of breed. For those Labradorially inclined, the breed-specific information is invaluable, honest, and detailed. For Labradorians and all other dog owners, the behavior and training sections are some of the best I've read. This book is comprehensible and comprehensive.
The layout and writing style make the information extremely accessible. The information itself is extremely detailed and important to all dog owners. Joel and Eve have succeeded in explaining the secrets of making a good dog into a great dog, through management and training.
It's no surprise this book is so popular. Not only is it about one of the most wonderful and popular breeds of dog today, but it is chock full of information vital to dog owners of any breed.
In my capacity as a professional dog trainer, I have had occasion to work with puppy owners who have read this book, and I have to say "What a difference a book makes"--this book! Owners who have read this book understand how their dogs' minds work, and grasp what I have to teach them about training and problem solving that much easier. Thank you, Joel and Eve, for helping me do my job better!
*Great book for lab owners*.......2000-04-30
There's LOTS of good advise whether you're a novice or long time lab owner. There's stuff here that you'd only get from a long-time breeder of Labs. It's unlike any other book on the market that I've found. They have crammed volumes of info into one book.
Great book!.......1999-10-14
I am thirteen and have read a lot of books on Labs, but none compare to this! It is very easy to read and gives a whole lot of information. I would definitely recommend it to readers of all ages.
A great book!.......1999-07-11
Joel has written a book which realy can apply to all breeds. It is concise and very readable for the lay person as well as to the professional trainer. I recommend Joel Walton's book to people in all stages of learning to live with and train their dogs.
An excellent reference for any lab owner........1999-07-05
Any Labradorian would find this an exceptional book written with humor and fun-loving training techniques. It is the perfect gift for anyone thinking of being owned and loved by a labrador retriever.

Nautical Antiques is a book of well described excellent photographs by an author whose qualifications are that he observed ships from the dock as a child. There is little history, context, significance or scholarship provided. See American Nautical Art and Antiques by Jacqueline Kranz (1975) for the opposite of what little Robert W. D. Ball has given us.

I've been a fan of the Quickstart series from Peachpit for a while now, but this book is by far the best that I have read. What really impressed me was that this book was actually designed by the author in PageMaker. If anyone knows the product, he does, and he's managed to share all of his insights and tips quite well. A must have.

As a boy growing up in North Carolina, Davis Miller was short, skinny, and scared. But he studied martial arts and after graduating from high school fought professionally as a kickboxer. What gave him the courage to change was the example of Muhammad Ali. In this insightful memoir, Miller recalls how a chance meeting with Ali in Louisville, Kentucky, years later led to friendship and to the beginning of Miller's career as a writer. During one of their meetings, Ali asks why Miller has followed him for so long. Miller's response: "Because you're the single largest person I've ever known."
Book Description
Muhammad Ali is the greatest boxer the world has ever known and the most charismatic athlete of all time. Adored by millions, Ali is a role model and symbol of courage to us all. Davis Miller was a small, sickly child mourning the loss of his mother when he first encountered Ali. From this meeting, there developed a strong personal relationship that has lasted more than thirty years. Brilliantly weaving Ali's story with his own coming-of-age memoir, Miller captures the true meaning of hero worship, fathers and sons, and strength through wisdom.
Customer Reviews:
Highly effective, very well-written work.......2005-09-30
Reviewed by Richard Hill, Liverpool John Moores University
'The Tao of Muhammad Ali' is initially a narrative documenting Davis Miller's childhood relationship with Muhammad Ali. The intimate approach, which Miller adopts throughout the work, is accessible both in terms of language and structure and is effective in highlighting the diverse emotions and responses which Ali generated across the world. Miller's own personal affections for Ali were typical of the social significance which Muhammad Ali's influence and character stimulated. Miller thus presents Ali as something of a role model to both blacks and whites in America. This is revealed in the way that the timid twelve-year-old Miller patterned his early life on the image of Ali. The work therefore provides an intimate portrait of Miller's relationship with Ali, which ultimately culminates in Miller's transcendence from this reserved and constrained teenager, to a successful writer. His childhood fascination later evolves into an adult relationship with Ali, which further influences his life. The personal narrative is worthy in terms of providing a sense of Ali's remarkable stature in successfully determining and shaping the lives of a generation.
The work is also a tender memoir detailing Miller's very personal relationship with his own father. In this sense, it can also be read as a tale of fathers and sons - a personal account, which explores the interaction between Miller and his father. Consequently, one can draw parallels between this father-son relationship and Miller's connection with Ali. This is due to the character of Ali, who functions as a patriarchal and reassuring figure after the death of Miller's father. This loss is therefore partly compensated by his close friendship with Ali. Miller summarises, "He may as well have been adopting me". This association is indicative of Ali's ability to generate a creative harmony or Tao - an idea Miller expresses throughout the work.
Rather than adopting a fanzine-centred approach, which documents and celebrates Ali's boxing achievements in great depth, the work focuses more on this intimate narrative style which demonstrates Ali's accomplishments as a figurehead, whose influential character stimulated massive social response. Davis Miller reveals how he is just typical of the millions of people who have shared some sort of spiritual connection with Muhammad Ali. In this sense the work is highly effective in terms of highlighting the social and cultural consequences of Ali's great character. Miller surmises his contention that even if Ali had never boxed, his unique Tao would still have made him one of the most influential people of this century. It is a well-written work following the pursuit of happiness and the overcoming of personal barriers, whilst showing the role of Muhammad Ali in advocating a life of harmony.
the best on the Greatest.......2005-08-06
In this biography the author, Davis Miller, analyses the personal inspiration and education he has taken from the life and times of Muhammed Ali and by doing this brings a new literary perspective to one of the 20th century's most discussed icons.
Miller discusses the impact of Muhammed Ali on his life, so goes in a completely different direction to traditional Ali biographies such as Muhammad Ali: His Life and Times, by Thomas Hauser (This is also excellent and works well to complement Miller's book). I feel that this is good because Muhammed Ali's influence and enduring appeal is more to do with his personality and on how he impacted on people's lives than with his superb boxing feats.
The aim of this book is to understand Muhammed Ali rather than to learn about his accomplishments, this is both a strength (it makes the book unique) and a weakness (people expecting a history lesson will be disappointed).
I recommend this book, I feel it is one of the best sports biographies I have read.
Great insight into the daily life of the Greatest.......2005-07-04
The Tao of Ali provides a wonderful insight into the daily life of one of the most recognizable faces in the world. I have also read the other two books by Davis Miller, and they all provide fascinating details on how people like Ali have influenced and affected the lives of millions all over the world.
In this book, Miller does not inundate the pages with statistics or details of Ali's fights, but rather provides a very personal account of his relationship with Ali. The Ali in this book is not the brash, arrogant fighter of his youth, but an older, mature man performing magic tricks to amuse others, playing practical jokes on his friends, spending hours signing autographs and talking to complete strangers, and dealing with Parkinson's disease with dignity and courage.
Miller's writing style is very refreshing, and this book - like his others - is a pleasure to read.
A True Insight into the Daily Life of a Hero.......2004-11-24
I bought many books on Mohammad Ali because I find the character truly amazing : the first modern icon, the first brand, the most recognisable face on Earth, and one if not the best boxer ever (especially in his early days).
I bought the book out of curiosity five years ago and from page one it grabbed me. I did read the book in one go.
Davis Miller's style is crystal clear, to the point; it sounds as if he is writing a letter to you.
His life is as boring as anybody except for the light that Mohammad Ali puts in it. Videos, articles, books, photos you name it, he has collected them all throughout his life.
What makes this book work is the paralell between the life of a star and a life of a fan : they nearly have the same age but they couldn't be more world apart if it wasn't for the dedication in the training they both had.
One day the aged fan meets his star and his life takes another spin : he has at last found his way, he will write about the only thing he knows that is Mohammad ALi.
Mohammad Ali is miles apart from the bragging Cassius Clay he once was and that is a reassuring discovery.
He pulls tricks, he plays like a kid, he shows his kindness towards any other human beings but the revelation is that he is not as disminished as the press would like to see him.
What this books tells us ?
it tells us that you can live your dream at any time, you can grab your destiny if you really want to. It gives us a true insight into the daily life of the most famous face on Earth.
The Greatest Book on the Greatest.......2004-11-14
I have also read Tao of Bruce Lee by the same author. I feel he really gets to the essence of each man's character rather than giving detail after detail. For most people it will be the only chance to gain the feeling of being there in their prescence. In the case of Bruce Lee this is particularly true, since he's no longer here with us.
