Extraordinarily good anthology.......2006-09-07
It is very rare that I am able to say that I enjoyed every story in an anthology, but that is the case for this volume. Many of the stories have a humorous quality, not so much laugh out loud as being pastiches of various mundane mystery and other genres.
There is a great diversity in the types of stories. The characterizations and story-telling are uniformly good to outstanding. The works tend to be set in somewhat feudal cultures, as fantasy usually is, but others are quite modern or otherwise set in familiar times and places (if you credit the existence of magic.)
Worth reading both for fantasy aficionados and mystery fans.
one of the best consistent compilations of the year.......2004-11-14
This superb twenty collection anthology runs the mystery gamut but has the common thread as stated by Rosemary Edghill in her introduction that "a crime (preferably by murder), and magic and the supernatural had to be somehow involved". Each tale does that and though the format is short story, readers will believe in the use of magic albeit whether to commit a crime, solve a crime, or both. The contributions run the gamut from historical to modern with varying sub-genres in each. Fans of fantasy who-done-it stories will want to read MURDER BY MAGIC as a virtual who's who of authors have contributed strong works in one of the best consistent compilations of the year.

hidden surrealists.......2000-06-15
this collection from top notch translator and editor kim connell is an amazing collection of stories. my favorite by an author and painter marcel marien.
Book Description
According to Dr. Roy Walford, there's no need for plastic surgery or obsessive exercising to escape the effects of time. He argues that longevity can be significantly increased by a diet that contains all the required nutrients but about a third fewer calories. In this completely revised edition of The 120 Year Diet, Dr. Walford explains - and backs up his explanation with laboratory evidence - why he believes that the anti-aging diet can preserve one's vital, productive years and extend the human life span to well beyond its present maximum. A perfect companion to the author's The Anti-Aging Plan, this book also includes 20 days of varied high-nutrition menus that contain fewer than 1,500 calories a day.
Customer Reviews:
Do the Work.......2007-06-06
The reader must not only read the book, he/she must do the book. I think it will give extended life to the degree that it is followed.
Life Altering and Enlightening.......2007-01-19
the research is beyond compelling, over 50 different species, 2000 studies with ongoing human controlled, clinical trials showing the same dramatic slowdown in aging biomarkers that occurred in animals are occuring in humans and the effects on different aspects of the body, lowered diabetes, lower cancer incidences, improved cardiovascular performances, lowered blood pressure, lower insulin levels, etc, etc. if you do a search on google or google scholar, you'll find ample enough ammo to find scientific evidence to corroborate Wofford, a pathologist at UCLA who did many of his own controlled studies. this book is packed with evidence and science. it exposes the myth that you have to be hunger all the time, with the key being low density foods. if you want to live longer, this is a must read.
So why did Dr. Walford die in his 70s?.......2006-11-04
I read this book and was somewhat impressed. Certainly most Americans would do well to eat less and to make every calorie a nutritious one. However, like so many good ideas, I think the proponents of caloric restriction take the implementation of their concepts to extremes, as Dr. Walford may have. Dr. Walford's daughter, Lisa, who also wrote a book on CR, evidently has a BMI of 15. I don't know how tall she is but for me, at 5'4", to have a BMI of 15, I'd have to weigh 88#! At 112#, I'm already told frequently how thin I am, don't think I'd look, feel or be healthy at 24 lbs. lighter. Also, the fact that Dr. Walford recommends the consumption of animal flesh, despite all the research showing how harmful its consumption is, gave me pause. I'd recommend you read Eat to Live by Joel Fuhrman, M.D. instead.
An Adult Fairy Tale.......2006-04-04
I read the book from cover to cover and began to embrace the philosophy and lifestyle it promotes. The book is a good read, sounds plausible, is well written but is not something to put your faith in. I had a question so I went on-line in search of Roy Walford, lo and behold the good Doc did not live to be 80. Dr. Roy Lee Walford, M. D. (June 29, 1924 San Diego, California - April 27, 2004) was a pioneer in the field of life extension. He died at age 79 of respiratory failure as a complication of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, (commonly known as Lou Gehrig's Disease). Hmm... not quite what I was hoping to find. Calorie restriction may extend the life of a rat in a climate controlled lab but we humans live in a polluted world. Calorie restriction to increase longevity sounds so noble, so self-sacrificing that one would expect a big payoff, one of a long healthy life. Sorry to say however this just isn't the case. Walford's research was negated by his own demise at the age of 79, sounds average at best in terms of years. Damage to DNA cannot be repaired by calorie restriction and optimal nutrition there remains a missing piece to the complex issue of longevity and health. My Great-Grandmother ate pork, drank like a fish, and smoked. She took no meds at all and passed away at the age of 105. Hmmm. Makes you wonder.
How to deal with this book practically.......2006-01-11
Well I read this book in detail and was happy with the different types of evidence he carefully described. Having an engineering background myself I found most animal and primate studies convincing.
When I read it I came away with the question, can this be done?
Read a lot since then also "Eat to Live" by Fuhrman.
Conclusion; now I know how It can be done practically;
Eat 2 Lbs of raw and cooked green veggies a day, eat any fruit, some beans and some (1 oz) of nuts. Leave out everthing and I mean everything else.
You will feel full, healthy, no cravings for fat, sugar, etc,
You will eat only when hungry in your throat,
And hey... you went from 2600 kCal aday to 1200-1400...
statistically you shift the chance distribution (yes you can still die of a heart attack or cancer tomorrow but much much much less likely)
I thought I include some of this to make it practical for readers to act upon.
enjoy.

Customer Reviews:
Recipes that are creative and worth it--Fantastic resource!.......2007-09-17
Vegan diets can get boring if people are not aware of the many, many foods that are available to a vegan. This book solves that problem neatly. I've been surprised by how easy it is to obtain, use, and store many new-to-me ingredients.
The recipes in here are fairly complex if you're comparing it to something like Betty Crocker. I usually save them for weekends when I have a little more time to spend in the kitchen. However, there are a few simple gems that I make very frequently (tofu tacos is my favorite). The reason I LOVE this book though is that I can rely on the recipes tasting so fantastic and being so interesting that even my non-vegan friends ask for the recipes when they've tasted my cooking.
For someone who is unfamiliar with basic cooking techniques, this book might be a little overwhelming to use. However, it has an exhaustive list of kitchen supplies that are needed, an index of ingredients, and a thorough discussion on keeping a well-stocked kitchen, using ingredients and cooking techniques. It's all there, but it will be a steep learning curve for someone who is just starting out in the kitchen.
Being Vegan is the best.......2007-03-14
Being Vegan is the best gift you can give yourself and those you love This cookbook gives great and easy, yummy recipes satisifys all your eating needs I highly recommend this book.
GREAT BOOK.......2006-06-30
I just recently made the transition from vegetarianism to vegan and was looking for some good meal ideas. This book is awesome! I would recommend it to anyone, whether you're an advanced chef or a beginner.
Wonderful Recipes!.......2006-03-04
I am just getting started on this one. Everything sounds great (this is one book that can get away with no pictures)! Anxious to try the Grilled Pizza. I am evolving from a Vegetarian to a Vegan diet so first most important is getting comfortable with new cheeses, egg and butter replacements etc. I have created Vegan diced boiled eggs with tofu, seasonings and a little mustard...works great for Potato Salad!
Budget-friendly recipes with familiar ingredients.......2005-10-29
I've found the recipes in this book to be, on average, very good to excellent. Many recipes are made entirely from vegetables you can get at the local farmers market. Dependance on soy and soy derivatives is (refreshingly) minimized. This book focuses more on wonderful and delicious recipes made from vegetable instead of trying to imitate or substitute for the usual meat and cheese dishes. No need to special order ingredients from Venezuela or the Ivory Coast either. I found this book approachable, practical, and with recipes that can fit into any meal, vegan or not. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in cooking with vegetables.

Vegan Cooking for Beginners.......2007-09-21
This book was very disappointing because it used a lot of terms which
were not defined. Also it used inappropriate measurements based on
the metric system or used ounces & pounds instead of cups,& tablespoons.
I'm looking for another book based on the American vegan experience!
Vegan Goodness.......2002-09-15
This book has really simnple recipes, excellent for beginning vegans. The ingredients can be found virtually anywhere, even New Zealand. I am a [bad] cook, and i even managed to impress my friends! However, there are no pictures so you need to use your imagination with presentation. It also has very useful information about how to minimise vitamin loss through minimun chopping and cooking time.
GO VEGAN!

Customer Reviews:
A Must for NC gardeners.......2001-10-29
For anyone who is interested in gardning in NC, this book is a must. Most gardinging books would only concentrate on how good the plant is. BUt this book also tells us some of the "problems" one might have with the plants and what kind of pests/diseases a plant might be susceptible to. I should have given 5-Stars for this book. The reason I did not give is the indexing is a bit confusing -- the botanical and common names are used in mixed mode. This is not a big problem though, once you get used to the book.
Again, this book is a must for all gardeners in NC -- experience as well as novices.
Excellent book for North Carolina gardeners.......1997-11-12
This book has been very helpful for me in choosing, planting and understanding how to take care of annuals, perennials, groundcovers, shrubs, trees, bulbs, vines and herbs that will grow well in North Carolina. The choices at a gardening center can be overwhelming, but Tony Bost's advice can help you focus on plantings that have a good chance to succeed in a N.C. garden. I especially like the great detail that goes into the exact way to plant your selection, and the maintenance of the plant, so that you know how often and with what to fertilize the plant, and how to water and prune it. Tony Bost has also included up to date information on new cultivars that are being developed and relies a lot on excellent research that is currently being done at the Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh.

Book Description
This work comprises a literary comparison of surviving alternative versions of selected narrative-cycles from the Nights. Pinault draws on the published Arabic editions -- especially Bulaq, MacNaghten, and the fourteenth-century Galland text recently edited by Mahdi -- as well as unpublished Arabic manuscripts from libraries in France and North Africa. The study demonstrates that significantly different versions have survived of some of the most famous tales from the Nights. Pinault notes how individual manuscript redactors employed -- and sometimes modified -- formulaic phrases and traditional narrative topoi in ways consonant with the themes emphasized in particular versions of a tale. He also examines the redactors' modification of earlier sources -- Arabic chronicles and Islamic religious treatises, geographers' accounts and medieval legends -- for specific narrative goals. Comparison of the narrative structure of diverse story-collection also sheds new light on the relationship of the embedded subordinate-narrative to the overarching frame-tale. All cited passages from the Nights and other Arabic story- collections have been fully translated into English.

Product Description
This full-scale biography of Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914) explores the life of a seminal figure in the history of American printing. De Vinne was born in upstate New York, the son of an itinerant Methodist preacher. It is unclear what propelled him into the world of printing, but once he discovered it, he never let it go. He was, for years, the primary and preferred printer for the Century Company, printing its distinguished list of books and such national magazines as St. Nicholas and The Century. His masterly printing of wood engravings, together with his obsession with presswork, tight composition, and typefaces, gained him and his firm an international reputation and made De Vinne a rich man.
But it is his skill as a historian as well as a printer that endears his name to the student of typography. His four volumes on the practice of typography are considered classics. In an age when few American scholars were examining early printed books, he made significant scholarly contributions to the study of incunables. His books on title pages and early Italian printing can still be read with profit. His working library was immense, and when the Grolier Club was founded in 1884, it was not surprising that, as New York's most illustrious printer, he was asked to be one of the founding members and to provide much of the Club's early printing. Unlike those who followed him, his strength was not in design but in production and organization. He thought endlessly about how printers should be fairly paid and how shops could be efficiently arranged. He fought a long and losing war with unionization, yet was beloved by his men and lionized by the printing trade. Although the firm foundered after De Vinne's retirement, it is impossible to conceive of the printing revival that followed him without taking into account his daunting accomplishments.

Book Description

They are arranged thematically and portray the shtetl, greenhorn experiences, poverty and working conditions, learning, language, humor, philosophy and the author’s childhood. They describe a great love in a poor immigrant family that survives on the Lower East Side in spite of the difficulties of adapting in a new country. Throughout, they are sustained by a warm sense of humor that helped take the sting out of adversity.
Customer Reviews:
A Rich Journey Back in Time.......2001-03-20
This book is more than a series of nostalgic recollections. It is a rich and warm journey back in time. The stories are gems and well written, and as I felt when I recently read TIME AFTER TIME, I found myself longing to be able to go back in time and experience those events. Reading this book make me reflect back warmly on my own histpry, on the bravery of those who have gone before, and on the sadly empty lives many have today. Lillian Bressman's love for all that was isn't a "chicken soup for the soul" kind of superficial story, but a series of priceless moments from a real life lived in love and warm tradition. A great gift for oneself or anyone else. A book to be thankful for.
A Gift to all of us.......2001-02-12
Lillian Bressman has given us all a gem, mingling wit, wisdom, and the power of deep love. This book puts warmth into a chilly night, pleasure to a gloomy day. But mostly it is a treasure about the love between a mother and a daughter than can endure and enrich them, their children, and their grandchildren. We should all be so fortunate! A wonderful read.
The greatest gift from a grandparent to a grandchild.......2001-02-07
"Tales of Mama" is a poignant, touching memoir of life on the Lower East Side of NYC. The humor, pathos and emotional richness of the life of a poor immigrant family are palpable. The sights, smells and sounds of a bygone era are sensitively revived. There is nothing more satisfying than reading these stories to a child or grandchild; they connect generations. These stories transform our lives; they belong to all of us. "Mama's" wisdom will enrich your life...and the lives of those you love.
