April in Paris, 1994, is hardly the stuff of song: forget lilacs and lights twinkling along the Seine and think riots and firebombings. Private investigator Aimée Leduc (Murder in the Marais) specializes in corporate security, but when Anaïs, an old friend and wife of an interior minister, sends her a terrified SOS from Belleville, an immigrants' quartier, the racial violence festering in the city explodes on a very personal level. Anaïs had intended to confront Sylvie, her husband's mistress, but when a car bomb fueled by Algerian plastique takes Sylvie's life, Anaïs begs Aimée to unravel the tangled threads that led to her death.

Aimée's investigations take her into the heart of the unrest surrounding the political status of illegal Algerian immigrants, or sans-papiers. What was the connection between Sylvie (also known as Eugénie, a pied-noir, or Algerian-born French citizen) and Mustafa Hamid, charismatic leader of the Alliance Fédération Libération, a humanitarian mission bent on stopping the forced repatriation of North African Magrébhins? Was Anaïs' husband being blackmailed by a radical faction of the AFL?

The jam-packed plot is occasionally hard to follow (and the intermittent presence of Yves, Aimée's fickle lover, is downright distracting), but Black's Paris, at times grimly threatening, is also wondrously vibrant:

She wondered how Sylvie/Eugénie fit into the melange that swelled the boulevard: the Tunisian Jewish bakery where a line formed while old women who ran the nearby hammam conversed with one and all from their curbside café tables, the occasional rollerblader weaving in and out of the crowd, the Asian men unloading garments from their sliding-door Renault vans, the Syrian butchers with their white coats stained bloody pink, the tall, ebony Senegalese man in a flowing white tunic, prayer shawl, and blue jogging shoes with a sport bag filled with date branches, a well-coiffed French matron tugging a wheeled shopping cart, a short, one-eyed Arabe man who hawked shopping bags hanging from his arms, and the watchful men in front of the Abou Bakr Mosque near the Métro.
Who needs lilacs when you have Paris in all of its confounding, confusing splendor? Francophiles and mystery fans alike will be waiting anxiously for Aimée's next outing. --Kelly Flynn

Book Description

Tension runs high in this working-class neighborhood as a hunger strike to protest strict immigration laws escalates among the Algerian immigrants. Aimee barely escapes death in a car bombing in this tale of terrorism and greed in the shadows of Paris.

1 out of 5 stars Tedious, implausible, and wooden.......2006-07-15

I forced myself to finish this book, though it was touch and go in several places, just so I could feel able to review it fairly. It seems I liked it even less than reviewer Ms. Trieste "CF", below, but I am in general agreement with her points. There are just so many things wrong with this book that even the grating "famous names" don't really stand out for me. Let's see, where to begin: the naive political ranting, the unspeakable dialogue, the corny love interest, the wholly implausible technology, the absurd coincidences, the distractingly disjointed structure, the proliferation of minor characters, the talky explanations of the detective's thought processes, the total incompetence and corruption of the police - I can't go on; it's hackneyed and poorly written, and that's all there is to it.

5 out of 5 stars Brings modern day Paris alive!.......2004-10-27

Everything in this book made Paris come alive...the writing, the textured society and vibrant ethnic population in the Belleville quartier. Fascinating story line and Aimée the computer security detective is so hip, real and vulnerable at the same time. I love Paris and 'visiting' an off the beaten track area....April in Paris, like Aimée says, isn't like the song. But wonderful and sad and beautiful in it's own way.
A truly memorable trip with her and her partner, René Friant.
I wish I had discovered this series earlier, but now I have three more books to relish! All I can say is have the author write faster!

2 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings.......2004-08-02

I wanted to like Cara Black's books. I really did. I love Paris, I love mysteries, and these sounded perfect. I made a big mistake and bought four of her books in one swoop, basing my purchase on reviews. I read the first while in Paris, and in a good enough mood. Now I'm back home, reading the second, and thinking "Uh oh..."
I do love revisiting the city of my dreams, but not with cliched gumshoe Aimee or her creator. First of all, the writing is disjointed and confusing. She chops up events randomly, introduces too many extraneous characters without giving them any buildup or grounding in the story (so you end up thinking "who the hell cares about this person. In fact, who is this person?"). Second, she annoyingly gives many characters "real life" names. I kept thinking "Aren't any of the other characters at any point going to say 'Her name is Eugenie Grandet, like the Balzac character?" or "Martine Sitbon, like the designer?"...but they never do. Stop it, Ms. Black! There are many good fictitious names to chose from and as a writer you should be creative enough to pluck some from thin air, and not the pages of the classics or fashion magazines.
I might read the next installment, because
a) I purchased the dang thing and
b) hope springs eternal
but if I start seeing any more second-rate Philip Marlowe dialog and nonsensical situations, I'm putting them right back out on Amazon.

5 out of 5 stars Paris in the spring...gritty and compelling.......2002-12-11

I loved this book...offbeat and showing a gritty, intriguing part of Paris that I would never have known about. The historical research by the author amazed me, but it never intruded on the story thanks to the skillful weaving and multiple storylines. The breadth of characters make it a book I want to read again. And again. The author takes the reader to a complex and layered Belleville, the old working class quartier of Paris where Edith Piaf sang on the streets which is now home to North Africans, Islamic fundamentalists and Algerian Nationalists. This was written before 9/11 but how prophetic.
I highly recommend this!

5 out of 5 stars Tied for First.......2006-06-20

I just read volume 1 of "Cable & Deadpool" it was amazing... it is tied for my personal number 1 Marvel series. Tied with "Amazing Spiderman" Volume 1 and "Wolverine: Enemy of the State." FYI check those out if you have not.

                Story - 4.5/5 - very few flaws
                Artwork - 5/5 - perfect
Dialogue - 5/5 - Cable is now my favorite marvel character.

4 out of 5 stars Serving of comedy with a side of action.......2005-03-28

This was great fun with some genuine laugh out loud moments. I'm not either a Cable or a Deadpool fan, but I didn't have to be to figure out who these guys are and what they do.

A big part of what the author has them do is lampoon the excesses of the 90s comic books scene (especially those of Rob Liefeld). There's a good story underneath, though, about Cable taking decisive action toward his goal of uplifting humanity (and Deadpool taking decisive action without any real goal except to take action).

One word of warning: Cable is undeniably the star of the show here. Deadpool's appearances are mostly for comic relief rather than because he's a true protagonist. Not a problem to me, but for those considering this because they love Deadpool, do bear this in mind.

                4 out of 5 stars Really Good.......2005-03-18

This is a really good book featuring Cable, and Deadpool.
this books plays out on the Odd couple theme and it works nicely. The art is really great and fits the story and charcters well. The cover on the other hand is truly horrible. Dont worry its not the same artist thats does the inside. the cover has nothing to do with the story, and Cable looks as if he is going camping.

The story is great. its about an organization stealing this thing that changes appearences. Cable and Deadpool both are trying to get it back. Deadpool as usual is making a joke a minute and Cable is no where near boring. They star pretty well together and i highly recomend this book.

                5 out of 5 stars They're Back.......2004-12-25

Deadpool and Cable star together (ironically) in this collection of the comic series cable and Deadpool. I, being a MAJOR fan of Deadpool, couldn't resist the temptation to pool out the money to buy this book, and I wasn't disappointed. From panel to panel, through all the witty banter and sarcastic remarks and one-liners, I was engrossed. Deadpool was brought back with great precision and Cable as well. Happily, this is not just a touch-and-go-let's-kick-some-[...]-and-finish-this-story-to-give-to-the-publishers. Nope, the plot was great (a tad ridiculous at times, but, hey, that's what makes it great!) and followed through the entire course of the book. The artwork doesn't leave much to be desired, if anything at all. Beautiful scenes were put together, wheteher it is a fight, or a quiet contemplation moment. There are couple times where the talk becomes a bit suggestive, but we have a new invention called maturity that takes care of that. All in all, I would recommend this for anyone who is a fan of Deadpool, Cable, the X-Men in general, or just looking for a good read. And honestly, anyone who finds fault with this book obviously doesn't know what they're reviewing and doesn't appreciate good kick-[...]literature.

                5 out of 5 stars Great at-home program.......2007-08-23

We set this program up with a family member who has PD; it got her moving and using muscles that she hadn't used in a while. Not only is it an effective set of exercises, it is also fun for her and her caregiver. We like the way it gives her time to work on certain exercises for an extended period of time before moving on, as well as giving her a new set to look forward to. Thanks for exactly what we needed!

John Argue's method is one that will definitely benefit any Parkinson's sufferer and their caregivers. I also highly recommend the DVDs. The only thing better is to see John in person!

Doing the exercises in this book has helped my husband, who has Parkinson's, to improve his balance and strength. Before he was falling; now he's not. John Argue has also made tapes, a series of ten 20-minutes tapes with a class of Parkinsonians demonstrating the exercises which are extremely helpful and which can be bought directly from him; contact information for obtaining the tapes is in the book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book and Worthwhile read.......2001-05-26

After reading previous reviews I confidently shipped this book directly to my dad. He was three-quarters through the book in less than 24 hours, usually books just sit unread indefinitely on his desk. He said this was the first book out of many that clearly explained the symptoms, the disease and a positive approach. It is a beautiful book and a worthwile read. Thank you Amazon for packaging/shipping the book beautifully and promptly.

Anyone who loves the sound of Chef Emeril's voice as much as he does is going to enjoy Every Day's a Party. Yet it is something of a "big hat, no cattle" kind of book. The 125 recipes seem like reheats, like afterthoughts, flavorful and evocative though they may be. But the editorial copy is rich and thick, like a wicked cake frosting that begs for a finger swipe or two.

Lagasse walks the reader through the 12 months of the year, selecting holidays and occasions out of each month on which to hang a celebration and several recipes. So you have the Sugar Bowl and Twelfth Night in January, Mother's Day and the Crawfish Festival in May, The Sugar Cane Festival and Pirogie Festival in September, and in November, let us not miss the Omelette Festival. (Does Dave Barry know about this?)

The history and the tradition of Louisiana are about as exotic as anything in the U.S. is ever going to get, and the writers exploit this to great advantage. In this sense, Every Day's a Party is really more of a travel book that happens to have recipes and Lagasse's high-proof enthusiasm leaking off of every page. A sense of place and purpose come through, as well as the opportunity to taste a little bit of what the author is aiming at. You'll find Salt-and-Herb-Crusted Red Snapper and Bananas Foster Ice Cream Pie, Crawfish and Sausage Jambalaya and Emeril's Martini with Chocolate Grapes, Cold Cucumber Soup and Pecan Florentines. This doesn't sound a bit like a New England Boiled Dinner, now, does it? For which we can thank God and Emeril Lagasse for small favors. --Schuyler Ingle

                Book Description

Emeril takes you through a year's worth of party and festival menus (divided by month) from Super Bowl tailgate to Mardi Gras, from the New Year's Eve to end the millennium to the New Orleans Jazz Fest. In the fun and colorful style that Emeril brings to his Food Network television show Emeril Live and to all his cookbooks, Every Day's a Party is filled with over 125 recipes and Emeril's signature "kick-it-up-a-notch" way of making every occasion an over-the-top celebration.

You've never had this much fun on President's Day.

I expected more from Emeril. This was a disorganized mess. This book is a case of celebrity appeal rather than quality appeal. I will keep using it for a door stop!

3 out of 5 stars No visual appeal.......2002-04-30

This book lacks pictures of the featured recipes. There are several pictures of New Orleans and people, but none of the completed dishes. If you're like me, pictures are what draw you towards preparing a recipe. What's a cookbook without food photographs?

5 out of 5 stars Emeril does it again!!!.......2002-03-16

Another great book from Emeril!!! He gives you recipes for every occasion. They are sure to please!

What can I say, it's EMERIL!! I have "wow-ed" many friends and family members with recipes from this book. The recipes are simply the best!! People ask me for the recipes I make from this book every time I make something.

3 out of 5 stars great ideas - but definitely for the gourmet.......2001-11-29

I love Emeril's recipes, but unfortunately for me many of the ingredients are exotic or perhaps regional. So many of the recipes turn out to be difficult to shop for. The ones I've been able to pull off turned out excellent, however!

                    Book Description

In 1879 Edwin Curtiss set out for the wild St. Francis River region of northeastern Arkansas to collect archaeological specimens for the Peabody Museum. By the time Curtiss completed his fifty-six days of Arkansas fieldwork, he had sent nearly 1,000 pottery vessels to Cambridge and had put the Peabody on the map as the repository of one of the world's finest collections of Mississippian artifacts. John House brings us a lively account of the work of this nineteenth-century fieldworker, the Native culture he explored, and the rich legacies left by both. The result is a vivid re-creation of the world of Indian peoples in the Mississippi River lowlands in the last centuries before European contact. The volume's focus is Curtiss's collection of charming and expressive effigy vessels: earthenware bowls and bottles that incorporate forms of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians, and humans, including the Peabody's famous red-and-white head vase.

Is a balcony all you have for your garden? Want to grow tasty herbs anyway? This is an inexpensive way to get the basics on starting your herb garden in containers. It is a Storey guide, which are almost always guaranteed to give you good info. Definitely worth the few bucks it costs.

This was an inexpensive booklet. It was good for basic information, but the information was basic enough that it could be found in any other type of Herb Gardening book. It's not something I will reference very often.

At 32 pages you really do get what you pay for. Minimal info on only common herbs, precious little indoor growing information, and certainly nothing that you can't find easily on the web.

                      Book Description

The first three chapters of this book elucidate the scholastic goals of both classical cultures during the Roman Imperial period. Apuleius' works share the stage in these chapters with representatives of the second-century Greek cultural paradigm. They define patterns of discourse and fit selected examples of analogous Apuleian strategies into the broader cultural framework. Subsequent chapters focus closely on the complete Apuleian corpus under the general headings of Apuleius in the roles of orator, philosopher and novelist. Two of Apuleius' philosophical works and his novel the Golden Ass provide an unparalleled opportunity to analyze the methods of translation and adaptation employed by the major Latin writer of the second half of the second century.

The wisdom of spending money on this might be questionable as the book could, at least in theory, be replicated from the .mf sources for Computer Modern (and be more up-to-date in the process), but the time and effort that would be expended is more than the cost of the book. For anyone who's still interested in creating fonts with Metafont, this volume is essential as a model as the most extensive use of the program.

                        Book Description

Hideous thought provoking verve, there is painfully disturbing honesty and rawness in her words. Her self-proclaimed incoherent style has drawn a large and loyal following. She writes as you felt it, but would never say. She loves you, hates you, and curses you all in one breath. Miller wastes no time as she spits blatant and explicit fact. You are literally grabbed, screaming and hollering into her reality, her AssOutedness .

Tasha C. Miller's collection of poetry catches the reader in a wild crazy ride of emotion and doesn't stop until the truth is delivered. Her writing is raw and real-bold and beautiful. She tells about the struggles of everday life within her world with the talent of an experienced muse. Thank you for having the courage to spit it all out there!!
