Spirited Aimee Leduc, a private investigator based in Paris, has been introduced to the Cao Dai temple by her partner, Rene, who urges her to learn to meditate as a counterbalance to her frenetic lifestyle. A Vietnamese nun asks her for a favor-to hand over a check and bring a package back to the temple. But this act of kindness ends in a stranger's death and leaves her with a bullet wound in the arm, a check for 50,000 francs and a trove of ancient jade artifacts whose provenance is a mystery.
The French secret service, a group of veterans of the war in Indochina, some wealthy ex-colonials, and contending international oil companies all claim the jade. They will stop at nothing to gain possession of it. And the nun has disappeared.
Aimee has promised to avoid danger, but it continues to seek her out.

Black sure knows her noir.......2006-05-30
This is the best in the Aimee Leduc series I've read yet! Not only does Cara Black show you Paris, she shows that it's not all the Louvre and the Champs-Elysees. She takes you where the tourists seldom go, to the arrondissements that the guidebooks never even mention. She shows you Paris from all sides, the Jewish, Muslim, North African, and Asian sides. She shows what it's like for former French colonials who returned, and former colonial subjects that relocated to France. In this book, she explores the Vietnamese community in Paris and seems to have done a lot of research. Most of us know something about the U.S. involvement in Vietnam, but not much is said about what went on before that. This book at least opens the door to the history of that country and France's involvement as a colonial power. It makes you want to read further. She also explores other items of interest, such as the French legal system, the art world, the symbolic properties of jade in East Asian cultures, and the area of Clichy itself, which is not even listed in the index of the DK Eyewitness Guide. If you really want to get to know Paris, this is a good place to start. The one thing I dont understand is that she always sets her books in the early 1990s rather than the present. This means areas may have changed radically by now. The plot is nonstop action, and while sometimes not quite realistic, it's fun to read. I love the scene where Aimee escapes down a garbage chute. If Aimee had pet rats like me, she wouldnt find them quite so horrifying. They'd prefer a nice clean home, too. The character I'm liking more and more is Aimee's partner Rene. I'm glad the author gave him an expanded role in this story, and I hope she continues to do so. He's really amazing; they should do more mystery solving as a team. Don't pay too much attention to negative comments, this series is a winner and I can't wait for the next one.
Everything but a real cigar.......2005-08-27
One of the problems with reading a novel that is part of a series is not reading until the fifth. Black's descriptions of Paris and the ambience of the neighborhoods reads like a well written travelogue on Lonely Planet. But I got tired of the number of times people drummed their nails or their finger or rattled their cups on a "zinc counter". Or how many time's Aimee had to changed torn fishnet stockings. Sometimes I got the feeling that the story was secondary to Black's knowledge about different areas of Paris.
As to the story...it gets in it's own way from time to time, and sometime just meanders along, "like the Seine on an amber autumn morning, lit by sun filtering through the clouds and fallen chestnut tree leaves, as lovers wandered hand in hand among the book stalls". Sorry got carried away...
Hard to tell whether she was trying to flesh out the story or had condensed it! Bottom line, the mystery was good and kept you guessing, but much of the time that may have been because we were "darkly looking through a nineteenth century, dappled window, which are so reminicent of the 14th arrondisement".
Sophisticated and rich with the aura of Paris.......2005-08-25
Like Paris, the newest novel in the Aimee Leduc series is complicated, elegant, and lush with pleasures. I've ardently followed this series from the start. As always, Paris herself is a leading character (and the history of France is too); unlike other popular writers Black draws a Paris very much like the real one, of wealthy aristos and struggling immigrants, refinement and poverty, where past and present mingle with comfortable familiarity. We also are given more and richer insights into Aimee and, in particular, her partner Ren. I am loving the way Aimee, and Black, are developing. This is the best Leduc Detective yet.
Not her best work .......2005-07-21
generally a big fan of Cara Black but this latest is a big mound of material searching for a decent editor. Even for a big fan its a slog. I think that there is a fine book buried in the text but whomever is claiming to be the editor of this book should be fired - it's a mess. Second Draft (maybe) but ready for publication it is not!
Start at the beginning.......2005-06-05
The risk one always runs in picking up a series with the latest book is not having the backstory and knowing the identity of the characters. I very much felt that which this series. I appreciated the descriptions of the city, and the intricacy of the plot and having it unfold to me as it did the characters. But I also found it hard to relate to the characters and felt the story was very slow. It was easy for me to put the book down and hard to pick it back up. The writing is very good but, as I usually do, I would recommend starting the series at the beginning.

A Whirlwind Fantasy Adventure at a Bargin Price.......2006-11-25
This collection of the first three books in the series of Gotrek and Felix covers Trollslayer, Skavenslayer and Daemonslayer. From the very first short-story this book had me hooked and didn't let me go until the very end of the book. I devoured the 763 pages in record time (for me at least, which was under one week). If you love fantasy adventures with great characters that you can identify with, I heartily recomment this book. I found it to be a great value over purchasing the books separately (though this does make it less portable if you enjoy reading while on-the-go).
I am not a player of the Warhammer games, so I did not quite know what to expect going into this book. I had originally picked it up to gain some background on the Warhammer universe for a job interview with the Warhammer Online development team. And even though I didn't get the game programming job, I was happy to have found this treasure.
The first two books are in a short story format which made me eager to read several in a single sitting. Looking at the table of contents I was leery that the final book, Daemonslayer, was not in the short story format as I had come to enjoy it so much. But the chapters flow so well in Daemonslayer that I didn't want the excitement to end. I'm eagerly looking forward to the second and third omnibi (omnibuses?) of Gotrek and Felix.

Good For Several Reasons.......2006-04-10
If you are just getting started, time challenged, not interested in the gym scene and don't feel the need to 'have to' use the latest machines, etc. - then this book is a good place to start.
As a Pro Trainer I believe simpler is better for most people, especially those who are just starting out on their fitness journey.

This book is fabulous!my travelling clients have found this to be an important resource, especially given that they find themselves in all kinds of different gyms across the country.So its only logical for them to utilize the equipment available.This is where this book has really helped.
I've also used the book to create some really intense circuits.I took it to a different level by arranging the workouts as a continous circuit.A must buy for those who are tired of trying to figure out equipment in the gym

I like the different exercises on every other day- it worked out pretty well for me with my week days- but some of the info seems to be rehashed over and over again in his books.Some of the moves bothered my low back at times- morning vs the evening so I changed around the execersies it seem to work. Hope this helps.

I think Jorge Cruise has a lot to offer and I certainly love his technique, but I believe his first book "8 Minutes in the Morning: A Simple Way to Shed up to 2 Pounds a Week Guaranteed" was by far #1. Here's why:
- 8 min. flat belly had a lot of repeat information from the original 8 minutes, which is to be expected because they both market to others, but if you have already read and followed the original 8 minutes book, I doubt you'll appreciate this one.
- I FELT a lot thinner in all areas while doing the original 8 minutes routine than I ever did while doing the flat belly program. It reccommends mixing hip and thigh spot training with all over body moves, I just didn't feel a difference.
- The original has a few paragraphs of motivation before every routine, lean hips doesn't. The motivation was a big factor for me.
- The original has different routines every day for 4 weeks!! Lean hips has only 1 week of each level (easy, intermediate, hard).
I know every body is different and perhaps if you begin with this book you would like it, but my overall opinion is that the original is #1!!

Not only does this book tell you how to take care of your cat, it is also very interesting to read. Unlike some books, it doesn't have pages of very short descriptions of cat breeds. I find these very boring, as they tend to say the same things from book to book. These have no relevance to actually taking care of your cat. This book has enlightened me on several things about taking care of my cat. Much to my cat's distaste, I no longer feed her mass market pet food, but follow the simple directions found in the book. I also moved my ageing cat indoors, where she seems much less stressed. This book is good as a informative read about cats, and a reference book.
Pregnant Cats and Young Kittens Not Covered.......2004-04-14
This book does not cover the week by week development of kittens in terms of dietary needs and social and motor control. If you are adopting a young kitten from a private home, this is not the book for you. If you want to breed cats, look for another book.
The index is also undernourished. It is missing the words diet, food, feeding, nursing and weaning. The book does a good job, however, on the politically correct attitude to have toward a cat.
Best Cat Care Book Ever!.......2003-07-27
This book tells how to keep your cat healthy, happy, and safe. It also takes animal welfare seriously, telling how you can get involved in helping cats! I highly reccomend it to every cat owner in America!

This is a great beginners book. It lacks some types of birds, for pros, but for backyard bird lovers like me, it's perfect. I love the tips and heads up on how to train, feed and attact all types of birds in my area. It even has a page on building a birdhouse!! Fantastic book for beginners!.......2006-04-22
I just bought a home in the winter and have since become VERY interested not only in the birds that inhabit the woods in my back yard, but in attracting more birds through the use of feeders, baths, and gardening techniques. I picked this book up on a whim in Cracker Barrel and I'm SO glad I did! This publication offers great pictures and diagrams, specific (both complicated and extremely easy) garden designs for attracting birds, tips for providing nutrition for your visiting birds on a seasonal basis, notes on habitats and flight patterns, even tips for keeping the little guys & gals from bashing into sliding doors and large windows! Ms. Roth also offers personal and very interesting anecdotes from people in all stages of gardening/birding.
Roth's Book would make a fantastic gift for a beginning or avid gardener/birder of nearly any age! If you live at home, close home, or if you call your Mom every day to tell her about your birdie friends, as I do, consider giving this book to Mom as a "something we can enjoy together" gift!

I have been birding for well over 40 years now, have literally hundreds of books on the subject and spend a great deal of time in pursuit of this wonderful hobby. I am also an avid gardener and maintain a very bird friendly acreage. I recently purchased this book and I have to admit, right from the start, I actually learned things I did not know, got great ideas and had a wonderful time reading to boot. What more could you want. Ms. Roth has given us some wonderful illustrations and a text which is enjoyable, humerous and easy to follow. I am absolutely delighted to have added this one to my collection. The book is useful for anyone interesting in birds, nature, gardening or the simple pleasure of reading a good, well researched book. Recommend this one highly.

The present volume presents a detailed account of the taxonomy, biology and distribution of the European species of Siphonini. This group of tachinid Diptera totals 58 species in Europe of which 6 are here described as new to science. In most species, the immatures live as endoparasitolds of lepidopterous larvae, but a few species even attack tipulid larvae. Several species of Siphonini are of great economic interest as agents for the control of lepidopterous and tipulid pests in agriculture and forestry. An analysis and proposal on the systematic position of the Siphonini is given together with a key to larger taxonomic entities of Tachinidae. The generic classification is also critically emphasized. A separate chapter summarizes aspects of the group's natural history: life-cycles, mating behaviour, oviposition strategies, etc. The taxonomic part contains identification keys to genera and species, and for each species a diagnosis, a description and accounts on the nomenclature, biology and distribution is given. A separate catalogue details the provincial distribution of the 47 species occurring in Fennoscandia and Danmark. No less than 275 line drawings and 15 colour illustrations accompany the text.

If you use Corel VENTURA 7, then I urge you to buy this book.......1998-01-21
With the advent of VENTURA version 7, Corel had to re-write the application completely. By doing this, they brought out a version that was rich in the functionality of its predecessors but would suffer all the pains of a version one release. At the same time, Corel decided not to publish a full reference manual with the software but only a general guide to the basic features of the new version. Corel received a good deal of criticism for their strategy. This, coupled with the inevitable bugs and problems arising from the re-write, did not augur well for VENTURA 7. However, help was at hand. Soon after the first interim maintenance release, numbered 7.1443, Corel VENTURA(tm) 7: The Official Guide, was published by Osborne McGraw-Hill. It was written by three authors, Ed Brown, John Faunce and Carol Lovelady, who have, between them, over 30 years of experience with VENTURA. An outline of their backgrounds appears inside the front cover. Suffice to say, they are acknowledged experts who are well qualified to write a book such as this. Although the writing of the book was a team effort, the authors, in the introduction, have supplied the reader with details of who was responsible for each section of the book. This refreshing approach is continued throughout the 35 chapters and appendices. In addition, the authors have taken the brave step of supplying the reader with their e-mail addresses so that you can write to them with your comments or queries. Ed Brown has further demonstrated his commitment to the product and its support by setting up a Corel Forum at the Universal Thread web site. Here, he is attracting a growing community of VENTURA users who are not only receiving a high level of support from Ed but who are also providing valuable help to one another. This book has five major parts plus appendices. Part one, Getting Started with Corel VENTURA 7, contains an introduction to the Corel VENTURA 7 software suite and how to create your first document. In part two, Developing Your Documents, the authors take the themes introduced in part one and expand them. Advanced Topics are covered in part three. Here, I was particularly pleased to find a section, on Corel Database Publisher, written by Carol Lovelady. This is a part of the VENTURA suite that has been sadly overlooked in the past. It is a utility that enables you to take enormous amounts of data from one or more databases, organise and format the data to your specifications, and publish it to Corel VENTURA 7 and to the World Wide Web. Part four, Corel VENTURA in the Electronic World, covers publishing to HTML and the creation of CD-ROMs. This is followed, in part five, by Corel VENTURA 7 in the Real World. I am not sure if I am comfortable with the differentiation but this part of the book brings all the guidance in earlier chapters together in the description of various projects undertaken by the authors. These include a Budget Newsletter, a Scientific Paper, Maintaining Books, Creating Brochures, Creating a World Wide Web Page, and a further section on Advanced Customization with Corel SCRIPT which is initially introduced in the Advanced Topics section. The 140 pages of appendices seems to be a mix of reference material and material that could be easily covered elsewhere in the book. They are nonetheless valuable and cover the Utilities, Keyboard Shortcuts, Corel-supplied Scripts, Equation Editor, Table Commands, and VENTURA Text Codes, with final sections on Questions and Answers and Upgrading which are of particular value. I believe that the authors did not find it easy to write this book. To their credit, it has indeed been a team effort and that effort has brought together their unique skills and knowledge into an outstanding final product. Although the book is entirely cohesive, the individual styles of the authors can be spotted in the various sections for which they were responsible. I have to confess that I have got to know Ed Brown fairly well and I was interested to see if my perception of him was realised in the sections which he prepared. I am happy to report that the high standard of support and help that he has provided to his many friends, both privately and at the Universal Thread Web site, is reflected in this book. However, this does not minimise the significant and well-written contributions from John Faunce and Carol Lovelady. Each of the authors has managed to bring their unique and valuable skills to bear upon a complex product which continues to have the ability to please and infuriate its users in equal measure. Since this book was published, Corel have included, with the maintenance release 7.1465, a reference guide (over 600 pages) in various formats on the CD-ROM. This is, at long last, a valuable resource for VENTURA users. However, I highly recommend that all users of Corel VENTURA 7 supplement this resource by obtaining a copy of Corel VENTURA(tm) 7: The Official Guide. It is an excellent mix of reference and descriptive material that you will find yourself returning to, time and time again. I look forward to further books on VENTURA from Ed Brown and his colleagues.

Book Description
Rosamond Stephen (1868–1951) was an Englishwoman who spent most of her life unsuccessfully trying to reconcile Protestants and Catholics in Ireland. The daughter of a theist judge, and niece of Sir Leslie Stephen editor of the "Dictionary of National Biography", she was received into the Church of Ireland in 1896 and worked as a lay missionary in working-class Belfast. Her attempts to meet, assist and talk politics with Belfast Catholics aroused suspicion in both communities, and her ecumenical quest ended in disillusionment. This selection from her wartime letters to her sisters records her unique approach to philanthropy, her fervent support for the war effort, and her growing disgust with the British administration of Ireland. The editor's introduction reveals the frustration of a Unionist who viewed the Great War as a lost opportunity for reconciliation. Her letters apply an idiosyncratic moral perspective to Ireland's political history.
