Book Description
When Perennis Felix, favorite of the Roman Emperor and would-be enemy of all, heralds his arrival in Glevum with the capricious execution of a slave, there are few who dare to question his actions. Indeed, a feast in his honor is universally approved in the cause of self-preservation. Libertus, freedman and pavement-maker, and his patron, Marcus Septimus, are among the reluctant citizens at the celebration. But the festivities come to a sudden halt when Felix appears to choke on a nut and dies in front of a stunned gathering. And soon, the ever-vigilant Libertus notices the mysterious disappearance of at least two guests. Is it possible that behind Felix's seemingly accidental death there lies something infinitely more sinister?
Customer Reviews:
A Good Entry in the Series.......2007-01-04
This is a very good entry in Rosemary Rowe's interesting series of Roman Britian. Libertus and his patron Marcus solve a mystery involving the death of a very unpleasant character called Perennis Felix. Along the way we meet up with some fascinating characters and learn quite a bit about Roman life, particularly in Glevum (modern Gloucester). Very enjoyable.
Roman Britain Brought to Life.......2004-11-13
For those who have not read the other books in the series this is a book about Roman Britain in the 2nd century AD. Libertus the main character is a freedman, working as a Pavement maker (Mosaic Artist) in Glevum (modern day Gloucester.) He has an influential Roman patron Marcus Septimus who calls on him frequently because of his ability to solve mysteries. These books differ from the Lindsey Davis and David Wishart books as Libertus is portrayed as a person attuned to his surroundings rather than with the manner of a New York cop. For those who have read the other books, this is just as good. Not much about the plot here, but why spoil it. Buy the book.
A veritable delight.......2003-09-15
Rowe's third Libertus offering - `Murder in the Forum', is a splendidly crafted effort. We are plunged immediately into a difficult situation for Libertus as he is confronted by an overly obnoxious and well connected imperial representative, Lucius Tigidius Perennis Felix, who has swept into Glevum with the apparent intent to marry his plain daughter Phyllidia to Marcus Aurelius Septimus, Libertus' patron. Unfortunately, continuing straight from the previous novel, Marcus is happily living with Julia Delicta (the ex-wife of the murderd Corfinium decurion, Quintus) several hours away and Libertus is forced to race to `fetch' him with Felix's imperious guard and hinted lover, Zetso. Realising the real reason for Felix's visit, Marcus hastily married Julia before speeding back to the civic banquet thrown (under some duress) for Felix at the house of the dog-loving Gaius Flavius Flaminius.
Having thoroughly set up Felix as a universally hated man (in no means by his brutal murder of Marcus' envoy) it comes as no surprise we watch dispassionately as he seemingly chokes to death on a nut halfway through the banquet. Immediately Libertus suspects the redhaired Celt masquerading as a noble, Egobarbus, and Zetso, both of whom have gone missing. The suspect hasty departure of Octavius (later found to be the beau of Phyllidia) also has Libertus chasing shadows until he located one of Gaius' dogs dead of poisoning. There is a moment of splendid parody as Gaius commissions Libertus to construct a mosaic for him dedicated to the fallen canine.
So, Libertus ends up being robbed, we have to deal with 3 suspicious almond smelling phials of poison, Octavius' `confession', and Felix's mysterious dealings with the red haired Celts before we move towards the denoument. There is a neat scene where Libertus has to represent Marcus at the funeral rites to his herald (an action which gives us the methods by which the Celts escaped the city after the murder)
A quick scamper north to a mansio reveals the true state of Egobarbus and Libertus is able to track down Zetso which with much impunity that results in him questioning an imperial seal and being thrown into prison for his troubles, allows him to garner more half truths. As Rowe neatly uses the trick of one character giving further incriminating answers to questions that he is misunderstanding, it means Libertus is able to uncover a far greater conspiracy. It all ends with Libertus up on charges of treason in front of Pertinax with Zetso. The latter panics, reveals all whilst still under the misapprehension that everyone else knows about the greater conspiracy and thus permits Libertus to escape his crime on the basis of saving the emperor.
Rowe's third installment is excellent. Her writing style has progressed enormously since the first book and the adventures of Libertus and Junio are a delighful addition to the Roman murder mystery genre. Well worth reading....

Merck Pharmaceuticals have edited a clear and comprehensive reference for older adults. Dr. Mark Beers begins with the age-old questions: when does a person become old and why does the body change? The remainder of this guide is divided into preventive and active care for self and others. The list of topics is a virtual everything you want to know about aging: nutritional needs, finding a doctor, understanding tests, surgery and rehabilitation, and long term care. More than one hundred specific medical conditions including fractures, constipation, tinnitus, dental disease, and dementia are explained and cross referenced with useful details. Although a clinical explanatory model prevails, non-traditional methods such as acupuncture and homeopathy receive honorable mention. The guide takes an unflinching look at sexuality, end of life decisions, and mistreatment of elderly adults. Other practical c! hapters are devoted to driving dilemmas and navigating the Byzantine financing of health care. This information is punctuated with essays from older adults--including a cheeky Max Sendak cartoon. The essays, along with charts, photos, and illustrations help to lessen the book's encyclopedic tone. Many older adults and the people who care for them will welcome the well-organized format and richly detailed information of this guide. --Barbara Mackoff

Best I've Seen on Elder Care.......2007-07-21
This manual is the best manual of information I have seen, and will be recommending it on my website for eldercaregive info for those who want the information in print.
Good coverage -- but a little dumbed down........2007-03-26
This seems to be an abridgment of all the material found in the Merck Manual home addition of relevance to aging or typical diseases of aging. It is missing some of the detail, and my guess is that there are better books for a more sophisticated older reader, including the Merck Manual itself. It is printed in relatively large type. There is an enormous quantity of common sensical repetition, such as the trope about "people tend to slow down a bit as they age". This mantra is repeated in one form or another every few pages.
Good basic medical review.......2006-11-10
This book is a very good "first look" for general medical info...better written than most of the info on the 'net...
This is a book for every home.......2006-08-27
Everyone should have this book on their book shelf. Well written, comprehensive and clarifies medical questions and concerns. Don't even hesitate for a moment to purchase this book.

I did not find the cookbook worth getting. Many others have been much more interesting
From A 3rd Generation Vegetarian.......2006-06-30
This book has been in my family since it came out in the early seventies. Though it does not contain many photos, it is an invaluable cookbook for anyone wanting an easy and nutritional resource of healthy and tasty recipes without meat or dairy. The recipes call for ingredients that are easy to come by, the majority of which are in any local grocery store, and are quite easy to make. It allows those who are not vegetarian to have a wonderful cookbook for healthy alternatives and is an absolute essential necessity for those who are vegetarian. I cook the majority of the time for friends who are not vegetarian and am therefore interested in recipes that can be enjoyed by many not a few who have become adjusted to plain and simple foods. Though some of these recipes are very simple, an easy adjustment or addition of herbs and spices can modify them for those who posses a zestier palate. From meals for our family, to holiday celebrations, and large get-togethers feeding hundreds, these recipes have been a stand-by and favorite for many beloved cooks in my large family for three generations. I hope it brings wonderful tastes and memories your family can savor for many happy healthy years to come. All the best!
Ten stars for anyone interested in non-meat eating.......2006-01-04
First bought this book at an SDA bookstore in Fresno in 1975 and its one of the best non-meat cookbooks I own and recommend. The recipes are easy to follow, great tasting and something someone in some rural area can make because the items are found in the smallest of grocery stores. The book is copyrighted so I cant post a recipe, but encourage folks to find a used copy or see if your local library can get a copy.
A Vegetarian Standard.......2001-10-24
I bought my first copy of this book when I became vegetarian in the early seventies. At that time, the vegetarian world was still considered exotic, with many people in this country refusing to believe one could eschew meat and survive. We were heavily into protein combining; looking back on it now we can wonder what the problem was! So many of the vegetarian books and cookbooks at that time combined the vegetarian diet with a heavy dose of whatever philosophies and religious beliefs and practices the author believed. This drove many away from vegetarian practice.
Mrs. Cottrell's books are none of these. They provide simple and easy-to-follow vegetarian recipes without a lot of extra baggage. Being from Loma Linda University, I assume her basis for vegetarianism was religious, but as a nutritionist she also obviously had health reasons for vegetarianism also.
Also, a defect of so many of the earlier vegetarian cookbooks (and still found in some now!) was the inclusion and use of exotic ingredients that the average American either can't find locally or afford. Mrs. Cottrell's recipes use everyday ingredients that we can all find in our grocery stores. Coupled with that is the use of ordinary cooking methods, nothing strange to the average cook.
Another aspect of vegetarian cooking that Mrs. Cottrell stresses is its economy. I've known many vegetarians who spent more on unusual and atypical ingredients than they would have for meat. Not here. I was in college at the time I bought this book, and was watching every penny. This book is a great aid for economizing and still making healthy food.
This book has remained on my bookshelf for twenty-five years, and I'd recommend it for anyone interested in cutting down on their meat consumption, or becoming vegetarian. I'd also recommend it for anyone interested in lowering their food bill, yet still eating well.
Keeping it real..........1999-12-16
I grew up with the recipes from this book and am so happy to see that it is still in print. Try the garbanzo bean waffles (with some pure Vermont maple syrup, of course) -- they are unbelievable! All recipes are excellent and easy. My only complaint is that some are a bit on the bland side, but this can be easily remedied with a little creativity and an extra ingredient or two.

Customer Reviews:
Is an excellent book.......2006-03-04
Is an excellent book. It helps me to take better care of my pets. I like it so much. It's like I have a veterinary in my home.
Expected a little more.......2003-11-11
When the first topic you look up isn't in the book at all, it's already disappointing. I was eager to get this book because one of my sugar gliders had incurred a tail injury. The word "tail" isn't in the indexes at all, except for bobbing dogs. Since most animals can easily substain tail injuries (caught in doors, stepped on, bitten by another animal), it seems quite an oversight not to cover the topic at all. Seems a lot of "vet" books are bantering the topic "sugar gliders" in their listed coverage since the resources are still scare. This book has only a couple pages of general info. If you're looking for complete glider care, better to go with MacPherson's 'Suger Gliders: Everything about (etc)' from Barrons. Complete Home Vet is OK as a general reference, but if you're serious, I'd go for a more expensive real emergency / veterinary care book. CHECK INSIDE THE BOOK CONTENTS/INDEXES to be sure your pet category is adequately covered. It'll save money and disappointment.

This has saved me a lot of both emotional fear and money.......2002-11-01
My dogs always seem to get sick on Sundays. To take them to a 24 hr clinic, the lowest bill is 150.00 in cash only! This book has reassured me, allowed me to wait until Monday morning, my animals are safer and so is my wallet!
I had a dog that developed an anal gland abcess that I noticed on a Sunday early evening. I took her temp and it was only slightly elevated, while I thought about what to do, within an hr of notice, it ruptured. I got this book out, it told me how to flush it with peroxide and allowed me to wait until the following morning to call the Vet. When I got to the vet, all he had to do was examine it and give antibiotics. My dog was not septic nor did she even have an elevated temp.
Before you panic, get this book! I highly recommend it.

There's a magnificent colored glass skylight pictured on a double spread in this book that was photographed not in a cathedral but a department store. On the very next page is the highly distinctive tower of a steam laundry. Such is Weinreb's uncanny eye -- and lens -- for the details that escape most people. The boulevards, bridges, palaces and archways that Parisians prize are here, but so are the weird and wonderful things they often take for granted about their great city, like the skull with bat's wings that sits on the corner of a tomb in the Pere-Lachaise cemetery. Weinreb has special fondness for the many gargoyles that decorate the keystones of arches.

Sub par book construction and content.......2007-03-20
As some of the other reviews have stated, the cover falls off of this book. Also, unless you are interested only in architectural detail and not the whole picture of Paris with its more famous landmarks, then you are not going to be very interested in this book. Considering the book's title, I was expecting a showcase of the city. Instead, I got an architectural design mini-textbook. I feel I could've put together a more interesting book of Paris with my own tourist shots. Save your money and get a better constructed and more interesting book.
Cover fell off the book.......2006-05-20
I ordered this book and when I received it the cover had fallen off and there was sticky glue all over the spine. I would have thought it was an isolated incident if I had not read the other review about the same problem.
great book - bad cover.......2005-08-29
The photos in this book are beautiful. The information in this book is excellent. The cover on this book is terrible. I opened this book a few times and the cover fell off the book. I re-glued the cover and the problem with that is the old glue marks show. Improve the cover and this is a completely wonderful book about Paris.
Paris From Another Perspective.......2004-06-22
This little book of photos by Matthew Weinreb is perfect to take along for inspiration while visiting Paris.
Matthew Weinreb takes extraordinary photographs of the beautiful city of Paris from many different perspectives and angles. He allows the city of Paris to come alive and show off all of the little intricate details that make this city so mesmerizing. The Eiffel looks like lace, Notre Dame becomes a sanctuary of light, doors to Parisian buildings become entrances of art, towers, stain glass, bridges and domes become perfect masterpieces.
If you have ever been to Paris this book will transport you back in time with beautiful memories or it will inspire you to visit the city in order to find your own inspirational moments. Weinreb will certainly aid in rousing a better view of this city of light. His photographs will romance you and might even convince you to take a few of your own in a different light, changing forever your future scrapbooks.
Beautiful photographs with a focus on architectural detail.......2000-02-20
If you are the kind of person whose travel photos contain lots of shots of interesting doors, building facades and architectural details you should find this book delightful. The book contains a large number of color photos and also some very interesting short paragraphs on the history of building styles and design in Paris.
Book Description
Dogwood trees and shrubs are unquestionably among the superstars of the ornamental garden. Although cornelian cherry (Cornus mas) and common dogwood (C. sanguinea) have been grown in Europe since ancient times, it is only since the age of exploration in the 18th and 19th centuries that dogwoods from the New World and Asia have ascended to the high thrones of gardens, where their aristocracy remains unchallenged today. Given the huge popularity of dogwoods as garden plants, not to mention the hundreds of choice selections and hybrids that have come to prominence in recent decades, it is surprising that there has never been a horticultural book on the genus. Paul Cappiello fills this longstanding gap with this definitive treatment for gardeners and enthusiasts. Providing a solid overview of all dogwoods of horticultural merit, the author provides more than two hundred stunning photos to help with the daunting tasks of identification and plant selection. He provides helpful details on cultivation, combating pests and diseases, and the fundamentals of breeding and selection. Based on years of research, first-hand observation, and interviews with dozens of specialists and nurserypeople, Dogwoods is an unprecedented guide to the diversity of plants available in nurseries today. Written in engaging and informative prose, this book will be treasured by generations of gardeners.

Taz Tally tells it like it is!.......2001-03-08
I've been in printing for a while -- let's just say I know how to strip color negs by hand, and leave it at that. I now, of course, prepare all my files for print electronically. The thing that bugs me about most electronic publishing documentation is that the writer always assumes that the reader knows stuff that he doesn't! The reader comes away with incomplete advice and information that he can't possibly apply successfully to his daily work. Taz Tally explains EVERYTHING, but I don't think you'll find many readers saying, "Ya, ya, ya..." Even an electronically-experienced reader can benefit. Sometimes Tally's explanations are just a bit differnt from those of other writers, or he includes just a bit more information...and suddenly you notice the light is dawning and things are falling together!
