Customer Reviews:
What a page turner (no pun intended).......2005-10-11
I read this book & fell in love with an era, a place, & so much more! With it being set in the 1950s & in New York, I was in heaven & very much so wished that I could be right there in the middle of this mystery. The author did a fantastic job with her imagery; I felt that all I needed was my own detective kit & Frank Sinatra singing "New York New York" & could (somehow) magically be right there with Paige.
The story had twists, kept me guessing (which I love!), & was very witty & smart. I often find that with a book in a series such as this one (Paige Turner Mysteries), I easily get tired of the main character. This novel was not that way for me at all. I could see growth in Paige & I found myself wishing that I was her best friend. Also, in reading this second book, I saw change & growth in the author's writing- it became more refreshed, more exhilarating, & even more smart! It was a very enjoyable read!
Why readers love NYC.......2005-08-09
When I was just a girl I read Brighton Beach Memoirs and was ready to pack my bags. Matetsky brings fifties Manhattan to life in the same way.
Murder is a Girl's Best Friend is a charming second novel and illustrates a growing depth to Paige and Matetsky's writing.
I gave this book a four instead of a five because it still feels too formulaic and similar to the first book. Paige seems a little too similar to Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone. Although the character description is strong, the relationships seem slightly forced.
Sassy, Smart and Funny.......2005-04-14
I loved the book, in that how it was set in the 50's, and was actually a funny, and mostly an unpredictable mystery. The characters are really interesting, and it was one of those books that you get into and can't put down. I loved how Paige Turner was brave in the face of danger, and used her wit, common sense, and friends to help her solve the mystery. I read this one first, then bought "Murder's Prefer Blonds" a week later. This series is great, and I can't wait for the next one to be released this summer!
One of the Best Mystery Series On the Market.......2004-09-16
Twenty-eight-year-old Paige Turner just wants to make it through the Christmas season alive. After all, with all of the crime on the streets in New York City, and the hustle and bustle of Christmas shoppers, the holidays can really take a toll on your health. Especially if it's the year 1954, and you're a woman working at a pulp mystery magazine known as DARING DETECTIVE, and all you want is for your Detective boyfriend, Dan Street, to be supportive of your chosen career. But suddenly the Christmas holidays take a turn for the worst, when an old army buddy, known as Terry, of Paige's now-deceased husband shows up, asking for her help in solving the crime of his little sister's murder. Terry knows that his sister wasn't the victim of a simple robbery, she was murdered, and he knows why, for he found a stash of diamonds hidden in a box of oatmeal. Obviously it's exactly what the murderer was looking for. Now the killer is watching Paige's every move, waiting for the perfect time to strike.
Amanda Matetsky has created on of the most interesting, and intriguing mystery characters ever. Paige is an enjoyable new character, whose crazy quirks will have all readers laughing out loud, while at the same time itching to find out who the killer is. Paige's fantastic friends, and snoopy personality will keep the pages of this book turning until the very end. A must-read mystery, even for those who don't normally read books from the mystery genre.

One of the Most Delightful Mystery Series!.......2004-08-22
I was actually reading another novel when the second book in the "Paige Turner Mystery Series" arrived from Amazon. I soon just gave up trying to get involved in the other book as "Murder Is a Girl's Best Friend" beckoned me.
The saga continues when her late husband's army buddy appears and asks her to help him investigate his kid sister's murder. A lot of thoughts come to the surface for Paige as she was deeply in love with her husband when he was killed in the Korean War. Yes - they were only married for 3 months, but Paige was devastated. Amanda Matetsky very ACCURATELY depicts Paige as a woman of the 50's. Paige doesn't NEED a man; rather she is portrayed as a loving, caring woman. Actually, Paige is quite a lot more independent than most women of the 1950's, most whose identities were very closely formed to the men in their lives.
Matetsky also very accurately has researched the jargon and headlines of the detective magazines of that period, who were a little more "scandalous" in their use of words such as "rape" than most of the newspapers of that period.
This series transports the reader back to New York in the 1950's in a charming manner, that is not ridiculous or silly in the least. Paige Turner is a character that you will LIKE. Abby is great as the uninhibited close friend and neighbor as well.
I really look forward to the next Paige Turner mystery!

Book Description
A brand new fantasy adventure with a brilliant premise: What if the greatest heroes of World War II were the tiniest creatures of fairy tales?
As World War II rages in Europe, a young American engineer recieves an order for a rather odd industrial furnace--custom made for someone three feet tall. When he investigates the client, what he finds is an incredible world where dwarves exist, where magic is real, and where enemies can come in all sizes....
Customer Reviews:
A Sleeper and a Goodie.......2005-02-25
What a fun book! A Knutter, or a Sprauge de Camp in WWII Rhode Island. Great dialects and a whacky cast of charaters in a factory. I think i worked there... They're all mad.... and then they get an order from some dwarves that are trying to modernize their own factory. And the Dwarve's factory is full of whackos too...hehehehhehhehehhehe... plus you get your blues playing truck driver and a chilling visit from the "Flying Dutchman"... Mr. O'Donohoe just sold a few more books to me...
Solid Entertainment.......2000-08-01
This is a modest and entertaining book. Avoiding the usual tendency of fantasy novels to have epochal, and usually overwrought, clashes of good and evil, this is a clever fantasy with historical elements. The idea is that magic and magical creatures exist in the modern world. In this case, the author integrates magical metal working dwarves with the WWII war effort. Some good humor and period detail. The plot is a little loose but this is worthwhile entertainment.
Great Potential Wasted.......2000-05-16
The premise of the book was unusual and full of potential. Unfortunately, the story was a meandering mess. The author appeared uncertain as to which plot line to pursue and the result is a boring story. There was not enough character development of the dwarves or the gnomes. Although the gnomes were supposed to be the "bad guys", the author failed to make them menacing and they came off as merely "cartoonish". Give this clunker a wide berth.
The Little People Help in Small Ways in World War II.......1999-07-31
This is a pretty good read. It does not have but one battle scene and it is not a big part of the book. Destruction is easy. It is the building that is tough. O'Donohoe has captured the feel of the builders in our country during World War II.
The only possible criticism I would have is that it does not capture the certainty of the period. At that time there was RIGHT and there was WRONG.
The Dwarves and Gnomes in the story are well put together and make much more sense than some of the books have put forward.
Very good mix of historical fiction and fantasy.......1999-06-23
O'Donohoe writes a pleasingly different kind of fantasy novel. He doesn't stick to your typical sweeping epic fantasy saga, a la Jordan, Tolkien, Tad Williams, Eddings, etc., but rather uses some imagination to open up the field. Here he solidly combines historical fiction, myth and fantasy in a tale of dwarves, gnomes and World War II. As always, he combines humor and drama, and relies upon realistic characters, something often left out in speculative fiction. His attention to detail, including such things as discussion of the 1944 World Series, is appreciated. Very much recommended.

Going back to work after having a baby? You don't have to wean your little one. In Nursing Mother, Working Mother: The Essential Guide for Breastfeeding and Staying Close to Your Baby After You Return to Work, Gale Pryor has written a nuts-and-bolts guide for nursing and working at the same time. Pryor breast-fed each of her two children while working full-time outside the home, and her experience and voice of reassurance informs this book. She makes a strong case for breast-feeding: not only is it good for your baby, but many working women find that it is the easiest way to care for their child, and for themselves. Early chapters cover breast-feeding basics. Later chapters focus on preparing to go back to work, instructions on pumping (equipment and positioning), how to manage life at home and at work, and how to cope if you "fall apart" when your baby is six months old (common among new mothers who work outside the home). The book describes a typical day of pumping and nursing for babies of various ages, how to combine nursing and formula feeding, and how to stop leaking breasts (discreetly press on your nipples with the back of your forearms or with your elbows). Appendices include a list of resources for nursing, working mothers and a sample proposal for pumping space.

Unique and Valuable Resources for Working Mothers.......2007-05-16
This book was such a help to me when I was trying to figure out during my maternity leave how I would be able to go back to work full time and continue nursing. My daughter is now nearly two and I am still nursing her. I have returned to this book numerous times for support and information. There are not enough good resources out there for mothers who work full time and want to maintain a close, nurturing relationship with their child. Of course, with any book you read there will be things you don't agree with and I would agree that the schedules provided for how often you will need to pump and nurse are not going to be accurate for every woman, but overall this book provides extremely valuable information and support.
Excellent book for mothers who want to breastfeed properly.......2007-05-15
I tried breastfeeding on my own (not knowing anything about it) with my first son and was not very successful. Prior to the birth of my second son, I read this book and was able to breastfeed my second son for an entire year. The book gives solutions that actually work when you need to increase your milk supply. I've bought this book for 3 mothers and they've learned from this book too.
Must read.......2007-01-08
This book is a must read for any working nursing moms, even if you are working part time, or from home. I read it cover to cover in just a short time during the baby's naps and found it very useful, motivating, and supportive. Great book.
NURSING MOTHER WORKING MOTHER.......2006-08-03

Finally!-- a nursing guide with one foot in the real world.......2006-02-27
With an adopted 10-month old at home, my first pregnancy turned out to be twins. I loved my 40+ hour management level job and did not want to leave. I did not think nursing was an option, and quite frankly wasn't that interested in it anyway. This book changed my mind. It is down-to-earth and gave me the grounding I needed to think creatively and yet realistically about what I needed and what my children needed from me. I ended up nursing my twins almost exclusively for 2.5 years. Best decision I've ever made. I highly recommend this book and purchase it for every pregnant mom I know who inquires about nursing and managing a challenging work-filled life.
Book Description
Are there wines to rival the greatest first-growths of Bordeaux and the grand crus of Burgundy? Robert Parker's answer is a resounding Yes -- they are to be found among the finest wines of the Rhône Valley. With this new edition of Wines of the Rhône Valley, Robert Parker, the world's most influential wine critic, provides the key to enjoying the winemaking world's best-kept secret. And publication of Wines of the Rhône Valley coincides with reports that the 1995 vintage from this region may be one of the best ever.
With the precursor of this book, The Wines of the Rhône Valley and Provence, first published in 1987, Parker began a campaign to share with the wine consumer the wealth of wines found in this underappreciated region. The area contains the oldest vineyards in France -- indeed the heyday of some of the Rhône Valley wines was 2,000 years ago, around the time of the Roman conquest of France. In recent centuries, these wines have been misunderstood and ignored -- and consequently undervalued. All of which means that some of the great wines of the world are available for a fraction of the cost of those from better-known regions.
Wines of the Rhône Valley is the ultimate resource for every wine lover, highlighting both the greatest wines of the Rhône Valley and the region's finest wine values. These wines range, in Parker's words, "from the humble generic Côtes du Rhône to the most sublime and celestial wines of Côte Rôtie, Hermitage, Condrieu, and Châteauneuf du Pape." With his trademark thoroughness, Parker has fully revised and expanded this edition to reflect changes in the region, new personalities, and the latest vintages.
Parker's previous books -- the critically acclaimed Bordeaux and Burgundy and four widely praised editions of the Wine Buyer's Guide -- firmly established him, in Time magazine's words, as "the man with the paragon palate." His appeal lies not only in his unabashed consumer advocacy, insightful reporting, and clear, lyrical writing but in the deep enthusiasm that infuses his work. Parker is an impassioned champion of wine and has made it his cause to give everyone -- from the novice whose curiosity about wine is just burgeoning to the expert who cellars by the case -- the information they need to be informed buyers and educated consumers. In this edition, Parker returns to the region closest to his heart, exploring the sun-drenched Rhône Valley in unprecedented candor and detail.
Wines of the Rhône Valley is divided into two main sections; the lush valleys of northern Rhône and the sunbaked hillsides of the southern Rhône. Within the sections, Parker profiles each appellation. A handy summary box provides information at a glance, including types of wines produced, grape varieties planted, and number of acres under vine. The price range of the wines is listed along with an assessment of their quality and aging potential. The description of the appellation that follows -- its history and personalities, successes and failures -- is accompanied by a rating of recent and older vintages. Then, Parker provides his classification of the growers of each appellation, comments on and explains how the wines are vinified and bottled, and gives guidelines for how long to cellar and when to serve the wines. Brief aromatic and textural profiles in this section give a hint of the detailed tasting notes that accompany the profiles of the top producers later in the chapters. Throughout, Parker tastes and evaluates the wines using his revolutionary 50-100 point scale.
The book's introduction thoroughly explains Parker's methodology and gives guidelines on how to use his ratings and reviews most effectively. His wine terms are also defined in a detailed glossary. And there's a section that provides Parker's guidelines for what a visitor traveling in the Rhône Valley can expect to pay for a meal as well as recommendations for restaurants and lodging.
Wines of the Rhône Valley is certainly the most comprehensive and detailed book ever written on this region. These wines, long overshadowed by their more well-known neighbors, are now thoroughly analyzed and reviewed, providing the ultimate resource for today's savvy wine consumer.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for wine geeks (only).......2005-07-21
Latest vintages reviewed are 1996 and many Rhone wines aren't made to cellar 10 years, so I consider the book out of date. However the details Parker includes about the regions and wineries do make this a very comprehensive reference tome.
Another excellent book from Parker.......2000-01-31
This is Parkers first book on Rhone - and what a result ! All areas of the Rhone are covered, some to a bigger detail than others but anyway, the outcome is great. Maybe a little more in-depth details on the smaller - or should I say lesser known - regions (which are the ones we mere mortals can afford !) would be nice but, knowing Parkers affection for Rhone, that'll probably (hopefully) come in the next edition. All-in-all, very recommendable..
The handy bible for Rhone wines.......1999-08-26
Once again Parker comes up with a great tome. Like his other volumes, this one covers most of the major producers of each appellation, and has reviews and scorings of most major vintages. As a lover of Rhone wines I would not want to be without this book, as I continue to explore this region.
A must bring when you vist the Rhone Valley.......1999-06-02
An excellent book. My husband loves it for their reviews. When we visited the Rhone, we relied heavily on the travel section in the back of the book and found excellent lodging and restaurant recommendations, which made for an unforgettable trip.
WHAT A BOOK ! Impressive tastings, writings and insights!.......1999-04-19
As a French and especially a French born in a little town located at 20 kilometers from Chateauneuf-du-Pape, I am really amazed that Mr Parker get to know the wines of my own country so deeply. He really understands their 'spirits' and he is - as no one that I know of - able of explaining them and detailing them in beautiful, and in the mean time, trully informative and practical ways. This Rhone Valley's guide - because I consider this to be a real guide even though it is a shot from one author alone - is really pleasing to read and to use. It is motivating! This is a masterpiece to be highly considered by all wine lovers in the sense that the wines from the Rhone area were - and maybe still are - not very well considered by all wine drinkers. Because Mr Parker, as a well know master taster with a huge knowledge about the wines and wine producers of the Rhone Valley, did write this book, people might now get a better understanding of what these wines are, how they are made, and who is doing them best. Mr Parker loves powerfull wines... (so do I) ...I am not suprised that he wrote such a book about this region because the Wines of the Rhone Valley ARE VERY powerfull - but not all of them. This is what you will learn by reading this book. You will find plenty of details as well as plenty of very good addresses there. This book is definitely THE reference for now. Give it a try. It is worth it. And if you visit the Rhone Valley wine country, bring it along with you or you'll miss most of the fun: tasting the good, the excellent and the exceptionnal. A la votre.

Sniffing Down the Right Trail.......2007-09-27
This is a pleasant, quick read including an index about the care and background of the beagle. A lively, intelligent little hound, the beagle is beautifully featured in some really good photographs.
If pet owners wish to go so far as to paste their hound's picture in the book, it gives you a place to do so. While that seems a bit much to me, it is nice that the option exists for others.
I like the list of resources included at the end of the book.
Only a handful of useful information.......2003-06-26
After becoming frustrated with more generalized books like "Puppies for Dummies" and "The Latchkey Dog", we turned to this book looking for more information specific to the breed. It was kind of an impulse purchase - something we picked up at PetCo because it had the word "beagle" in the title. We did not find this book helpful.
Most of the information contained within could apply to any breed. There were too few training tips and it seemed to gloss over a lot of the potentially negative aspects of the breed (over-excitablity, destructive tendancies). It was very much a beginners guide that only offered a handful of tips.
Still, if you're looking to round out a collection of beagle resources, this is a complimentary offering. The pictures are nice and it's a brisk read. If you're looking for an encyclopedic resource or any insight into the temperment or habits of the breed, look eleswhere.
The Essential Beagle leads the pack.......2000-04-24
This slim book (95 pages, including index) is very modern and full of nice touches. Opening with a "Your Essential Beagle Information Sheet" complete with a spot to paste a picture of your Beagle and closing with a good summary of other Beagle and dog resources, The Essential Beagle is clearly illustrated and has many excellent Beagle photos.
Chapters include Getting to Know Your Beagle, Health, Nutrition, Cleaning and more. Advice throughout is well written and concise. The Essential Beagle is a favorite around our home and should be especially appreciated by youngsters.

Usually books about inanitmate articles aren't that interesting ,but Jamie Bero -.Johnson and her husband have gained the reader's attention and respect of their apparent knowledge about their subject matter. I really had no idea there even existed such a thing as Purinton pottery and how widely distributed it was in the 40's.This book made me want to go out immediately and try to find some of these wonderful pieces of Americana so beautifully described in this book!

Container Gardening for Dummies.......2006-02-19
As someone with a "black thumb" (I can generally kill a plant within 24 hours!) I found this book to be very helpful. Even though there are huge amounts of real and applicable information here, the author manages to keep it fun and very readable. The best part is that since reading this book and putting it to use I haven't lost one plant! In fact, they seem to be thriving.
The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 is the layout. I feel more thought could have been put into the way the chapters are put together. Specifically, the fact that I had to skip past all the design ideas to get to the care information in the back. Even with this one minor flaw, I still highly recommend this book to anyone interested in starting their own container garden.
A Great Basic Starter Book.......2005-04-12
I found lots of very useful information from pot sizes and soil (and soil-less) mixes as well as useful info on lots of plants, needs, watering etc. As container gardening is quite different than planting in the ground, I found this book VERY useful and different from all the other normal gardening books. I am a beginner, but love to research stuff to death and I find this book does give you a very good foundation to get started and do well.
Very informative.......2003-07-19
I'm a beginner to gardening and found this to be a wonderful book. It even has a section on which conifers (Christmas-tree-type trees) can be grown in containers. This is great - I'm going to grow my own little forest on my balcony.
Very Helpful!.......2001-08-31
I originally checked this book out from the library, and after renewing three times and being told I couldn't renew it any more, I broke down and bought my own copy. It is VERY helpful in explaining the types of plants that do well in containers, and how to take care of them, how to deal with pests, how to "winter over," and so on. There is an entire section on what you can put plants in (be creative!), what the different types of soils are and what that means to you, and what plants do well in whichever type of light you have. I keep my copy of this book handy, and refer to it often. It's the single best reference book I've found on the subject of Container Gardening. Herb Gardening for Dummies is also good, but not QUITE as good as this one.
A waste.......2001-05-10
When they say "For Dummies", they mean it! Don't waste your time. You can get more information from the back of a seed packet.
