Book Description
Seven men came to a meeting in Cincinnati. One wore a wire, and another didn't hesitate to kill him-fast and hard. Now Parker has left that meeting and the murder behind, and gotten involved in a scheme that is stuffed with money and trouble. In the rural northwestern corner of Massachusetts, Parker and a pal plan to steal an armored car. But the human element gets in the way. From a nervous ex-con and his well-intentioned sister to a bank manager's two-timing wife and a beautiful, relentless cop, too many people have their hands too close to Parker's pie. Then a bounty hunter, who just happens to be hunting the man who never left the Cincinnati meeting, joins the fray. Parker can see this job turning bad, yet he can't let go of the score. And when guns go off and the heist goes down, the perfect plan will explode with a sound and fury all its own. For Parker, there's always the choice of turning from fight to flight-even if there's nowhere to run....

Nobody Reads One Parker Classic and Isn't Forever Running Around Looking for More!.......2006-03-07
Donald E. Westlake's alter ego Richard Stark's Parker character is back in another extremely enjoyable fast paced easy read. In Nobody Runs Forever Parker is told of a plan for an armoured car heist by a criminal partner he formerly worked with. The Deer Hill Bank is being sold to a much bigger consortium and the wife of the seller who is so annoyed that her father's legacy is being destroyed, she has asked her ex jail bird lover to hijack the bank's money when it is transferred by armoured cars to the purchasing banks vaults. She can provide the information on the dates and which car the money will be in but Parker can see a lot of problems with the plan. Of course he is still interested but the wife and the ex con are not the only problems his team will come across.
Nobody Runs Forever is a novel both fans of and new readers to Westlake under his or his pen name Stark will read over and over again. Short chapters make putting it down when you reluctantly have to a breeze as well. As well as other Parker adventures also check out under Westlake's own name his masterpiece solution to being unemployed, The Ax. His novels Corkscrew and the Scared Stiff are also brilliant!
I would also recommend James Pattinson (Pattinson not Patterson), a British author who writes very similar novels which are also short chaptered and simple but enjoyable reads to those who have read everything Westlake has written so far but want more of this sort of reading.
possibly the most evocative ending of a Parker novel yet.......2006-03-01
Like all the other Parker capers, this one has a hard, relentless "hero" and a caper that all sorts of flakes and investigators want in on. I enjoyed the ending more than any other Parker ending yet; it evoked the barking of bloodhounds and the snap of cold air in the woods as winter nears. A nearly lyrical end to a book starring a very bad man.
Don't mess with Parker!.......2006-01-31
Another great Parker novel. Stark/Westlake always throws out a few imagery gems that make you smile. For example, to describe the freshly washed caravan of armored cars: "The four armored cars lumbered like costumed circus elephants..." You can almost picture them trunk-to-tail!
Unusually, this Parker novel doesn't wrap up all the ends in a neat package. The finale is a cliff hanger of sorts. I'm anxiously awaiting the next one to find out what happens.
The series has never been better.......2005-08-15
Westlake is still going strong. This latest Parker volume begins like the Parker books of 40 years ago. The ultra-dry style of the Stark books aren't for everyone--there may not be an extraneous word in any of the 25 Parker books. A true-to-life "partial holocaust" at the conclusion of "Nobody Runs Forever" is fully in the Stark tradition.
What happens next?.......2005-07-23
I happen to be a fan of Westlake's, as himself and as Stark. However, I found this last book very disappointing. The character of the female bounty hunter is interesting, but then she suddenly disappears, even though it is suggested she is on a track. On the other hand, we find out more than we need to know about what happens to another character, Dr. Madchen, even though he is almost peripheral to the story. At the end, the hero is last seen climbing a hill, with dogs and cops in pursuit. I suppose that explains the title.
On his own website, Westlake says "the only thing wrong with the ending is that it suggests the end of a series". I suppose authors love even their misses. I hope he redeeems himself next time.

A Satisfactory End To A Remarkable Series.......2006-11-15
I hope that most Riverworld fans out there were more satisfied with this one than I was. I appreciate what the other reviewer said about the book, but I was disappointed. I read it primarily for the Farmer stories at the beginning and the end. Some of the others were entertaining, some stretched the premise a little too far, and some just seemed like an excuse to write a story about Elvis or Wild Bill or whatever famous person the writer of the story liked.
The original series (including the original novella which lead up to "To Your Scattered Bodies Go") was a great series. My favorite will always be "The Fabulous Riverboat," the story of how Sam Clemens built the Not For Hire. There was even a Not For Hire story in this collection. I kind of enjoyed it, but it really just made me yearn for the original book. Even the fifth book of the series (which was technically the sixth book if you count the original novella) took place after the mystery of Riverworld had been solved, and showed signs of a series running out of steam. This collection, released alongside Tales of Riverworld (which was of equal calibre to this one, and included a good story by Ed Gorman) seemed to be the last of the series, and it felt to me like the stories were reaching.
I appreciate the writers taking time to pay tribute to a great series, but hopefully we will never see writers writing Dark Tower stories to celebrate Stephen King, or 2001 Hal and Dave stories to celebrate Arthur C Clarke. It is nice to pay tribute, but it never lives up to the originals... This is why I especially appreciate the Farmer stories, as if he chose to close off his tribute to his own series. I didn't know when I read these that Farmer used his own ancesters in them. I don't know if Farmer is still writing (or if he is still alive), but this will likely be the last of any Riverworld tales I read. I will be glad, however, to revisit the original series at any time.
Imaginative! Unique! Riverworld!.......1997-06-04
If you're a fan of Philip Jose Farmer's brainchild, Riverworld, you've probably already read this. If you're not, it would probably be best to start with the original materal.
However, you certainly don't need to be familiar with his five-novel series to understand or appreciate this diverse collection of well-written and intriguing SF stories. In a nutshell, Riverworld is a vast, constructed planet where everyone who's ever lived on Earth since the dawn of history to 1983 is resurrected. This leads, naturally, to an infinite variety of character meetings and confrontations through amusing and ingenious historical "what-ifs".
Like what? Like what if Shakespeare came face to face with Richard III - who is not amused at the Bard's characterization of him (as in Jody Lynn Nye's excellent contribution). Or if Admundsen and Peary attempted to fly, on one of Riverworld's primitive planes, to that planet's South Pole. Why? "Because It's There," by Jerry Oltion. How about Patton fighting it out in Roman-style gladiator games (brought to you by a powerhouse in the SF field, Lawrence Watt-Evans)? Or for even more jingoistic John Wayne-style indulgence, what if American icons Jim Bowie and Davy Crockett tussled with some Nazis?
Philip Jose Farmer contributes two stories here as bookends, and they are both superb; in addition to being engaging and thought-provoking, he uses only his own ancestors as characters!
Fun and imaginative historical speculation by a lot of great talents in the field. Warmly recommended

Customer Reviews:
Very helpful.......2006-10-04
I thought this book was great and offered plenty of great advice (my children are 2-7 so I am reviewing it from that perspective). There are discussions on 25 friendship problems: argues, bad friends, bad reputation, bossy, bullied and harassed, cliques, clueless, different, does't share, fights, gossips, hot tempered, insensitive, jealous and resentful, left out, new kid, peer pressure, shy, siblings, sleepovers, tattletale, teased, tiffs and breakups, too competative, and too sensitive. No one child is going to have all these problems, but the sections are separate so you can read just the sections that apply to your child.
The reason I docked one star is because of the "shy child" section. I have a very quiet, or "shy" child so was particularily interested in this part. However, the author points out to never let anyone call your child "shy" but "SHY" is in the title of her chapter, in the title of all the suggested reading books for children and parents, and is the word of choice to talk about this personality trait. So, it's really confusing. Does she think the word shy is OK or not? It's not totally clear....Anyhow, I guess the main point is even if your child is "shy" don't let him/her use this as an excuse. Help him/her to work thru it.
Anyhow, I would recommend this book for your parenting library. It's easy to use and well organized.
Hmmmm . . ........2006-08-03
Did anyone else notice that the 8 glowing reviews were all written within a month of each other, and all within a month and a half of when the book was first published? Hmmm.
Not sorry, but not thrilled.......2006-03-08
The advice in this book is easy to understand and follow, but sometimes falls into the realm of overly simplistic. I found myself searching vainly through the book for more depth, but I am not sorry that it got me started on the right track to tackling my issue with my daughter.
An essential tool for raising healthy kids.......2005-05-04
Nobody Likes Me... is a fabulous book. There is so much emphasis these days placed on teaching kids the 3 R's and preparing them for future careers that many parents don't realize that social competence and confidence are what really enable kids to grow up to be successful and happy people.
And, sadly, there are few opportunities for kids to develop these social skills. As the author of Your Children are Under Attack: How Popular Culture is Destroying Your Kids' Values, and How You Can Protect Them (Sourcebooks, 2005), I regularly see a culture of peer pressure, bullying, cliques, social ostracism, and cruelty in schools.
Dr. Borba offers parents valuable insights and practical tools they can use to minimize the destructive aspects and maximize the positive aspects of their children's relationships. She shows kids how to develop healthy and safe friendships, and how to avoid the bad roads that popular culture tells them they need to go down to be accepted and popular.
Dr. Borba's book is an essential weapon that parents can use in the war against popular culture. Teaching children how to develop and maintain meaningful and lasting friendships, and to gain the skills and confidence in their "social selves" are wonderful gifts that all parents can give their children to lead a successful and happy life. Dr. Borba's book can show the way.
Really Useful Book.......2005-04-26
My son's teachers kept telling me my son was overly competitive and bossy -- They said he'd make a great CEO but right now it was really harming his relationship with other kids. They recommended Nobody Likes Me, Everybody Hates Me. I have to tell you that I had doubts -- I've tried these parenting books and if you can find one idea that is useful you're jumping up and down. This one really is helpful and simple to do. It's literally filled with ideas you can use to help your child. I read through the two chapters with my son's friendship issues and instantly saw what I was doing wrong. We're now working on the friendship skill builder for bossy and over competitive and the teachers say they've already seen changes with my kid. This is the one parenting book I'd recommend. It works!

Customer Reviews:
Good Book.......2001-01-30
This is a fine book for any tea lover. My only quibble is with the recipes using a 14 ounce can of unsweetened condensed milk. The only milk that comes in that size is the Eagle Brand type which IS sweetened. I made the recipes with the sweetened milk and they taste fine. I think it is a typo, but I may be wrong.
Chai, The Spice Tea of India.......2000-02-20
After living in India for 12 years (1971-1983) this delightful book brought back so many wonderful memories that were so strong you could almost taste them. Diana Rosen has done an excellent job of blending the romantic culture with the traditions of making and serving tea that transcends all classes and castes of the India subcontinent. After reading 'Chai' I have order six more copies as gifts for my close friends. Everyone who enjoys a cup of tea, and what it can bring, will love this tasty and instructive book.

Good overview, easy read........2004-05-27
This is the coffee table book. It's a reasonably quick read and discusses all the Swiss dogs.
Quick Read But Very Basic.......2003-07-26
This book may be appropriate for anyone completely unfamiliar with Mountain Dogs, who also wants a very brief synopsis about each of these wonderful breeds.
To anyone wanting more than that, this book will probably be a disappointment and not worth the money to buy it.
I personally view this book as a waste of money, time and effort. And I generally advise others to avoid this book because there are much better books on the subject matter that are easily available.
I'm still hoping the author of this book will write another edition of this book and expand with a much more comprehensive coverage of each of these breeds. Now that's a book I could be interested in. But this one? I gave it away soon after I bought it.
Great beginning informational reference book on these dogs.......1998-08-22
This book goes into detail about the history of the Mountain Dogs as well as a complete overview of each of the four breeds within this classification. There is not the geneological references that you may find with other books, and I appreciated that fact as someone who just wanted to "get to know the breed" a bit better. The referece delineates the four breeds and compares each. It can be difficult to find information about the three lesser known Mountain Dogs, so for those looking for information about the Appenzeller, this is a great start.
Included, also, is some basic puppy rearing information, including tips on house training, grooming, basic health and breeding.
If you are interested in learning more about these teriffic dogs, but dont want to spent a fortune on a coffee table book, this is a great purchase!

Book Description
From spring green to winter gold, the drama of grasses is nonstop. There are the striking yellow-and-green ostrich plumes of Zebra Grass. The fine-textured leaves of Blue Oat Grass. Flame Grass's dazzling red-orange leaves, Fountain Grass's coppery brushes, the rich brown nuggets of Northern Sea Oats, the feathery purple haze of Switch Grass.
Whether on their own or as backdrops for colorful garden flowers, ornamental grasses are admired for their color, form, movement, and texture. They also aid in erosion control, soil stabilization, and water retention, making them great conservation tools for gardeners in all hardiness zones. Although grasses are widely available at garden centers all over North America, few books advise the gardener on how to use them in the garden - and especially how to combine them with perennials and other plants. GRASSES features plans and practical advice for more than 24 unique gardens. It's complete with an identification and growing guide to the plants, and it features more than 150 full-color photographs, illustrations, and landscape plans.
Customer Reviews:
Great Grasses.......2007-10-01
Love this book, wonderful pictures, but --- I find myself looking for a comprehensive chart / list that gives an overview -- so that you can make gardening choices easier ... examples; height, color, cool/warm, best conditions, clump or creep, zones --- well you get the point . . .
Less Grass More Grasses.......2007-03-12
Grasses. They add so much wonderful texture to perennial collections and the landscape. They add terrific movement, catching the smallest breezes, defying the strongest winds and I wanted them in my garden however I knew so little about them. Then along came this terrific book by Nancy J. Ondra with photographs by Saxon Holt. Everything about this book is appealing.
I appreciate the way it is laid out in four sections; Getting to Know Grasses, Color Palettes, Seasonal Usage and Selecting for Location. Ms. Ondra is a font of information without overloading your brain and as a Grasses Novice I find that useful. The photography by Mr. Holt is truly beautiful, with most of the photographs taken in combinations with other plant materials so you can get the feel of the various Grasses in the landscape. Section Four (p.94) really helps you get down to the nitty-gritty of making the appropriate selections for various soils and exposures. This is the sort of book to use year in and year out and I think would be useful to professional and advanced gardners as well as beginners. You get a lot of bang for your buck with this volume. Highly recommended!
Quality photography enhances this practical reference guide........2002-03-23
Grasses by freelance gardening writer Nancy J. Ondra is a beautiful and practical guide to raising ornamental grasses in one's garden. Filled cover to cover with excellent color photographs by life-long gardener and gardening photographer Saxon Holt of aesthetic and splendid grasses, the profusely illustrated text presents the reader with a wide choice of colored grasses to best accentuate the beauty of one's garden and how to best select choice plants for wet, dry, hot, or shady sites. Highly recommended for personal and professional gardening, horticultural and landscaping reference collections, even non-gardeners will appreciate the dazzling, coffee-table book quality photography of this singularly elegant yet practical guide.

Book Description
"The design of this Memoir is, to present the incidents in the life of a little colored boy." So begins the life story of James Jackson, as set down by his African American teacher, Susan Paul, in 1835, as an example to other children and adults who might learn from the boy's goodness. This remarkable document--the first African American biography and a work that predates Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by almost thirty years--is a lost treasure from the annals of African American history. With its combination of eyewitness accounts, personal testimony, and excerpts from traditional Sunday school texts, the memoir is an extraordinary social history rooted in both nineteenth-century evangelicalism and the experiences of free African Americans. Susan Paul's portrayal of James Jackson's Christian sensibility, his idealism, and his racial awareness emphasizes his humanity and exemplary American character over his racial identity, even as it embeds him in his African American community.
