Book Description

When PI Talba Wallis gets a frantic phone call from Orleans Parish Prison, the last person she expects to hear from is her boss's lawyer daughter, Angie. Popped for drug possession, Angie insists the drugs were planted. She's a target for representing a neighborhood group protesting the illegal commercial use of a marina by its owner, Judge Buddy Champagne. According to Angie, the judge is dirty---and he's the one who had her set up.Talba and her boss, Eddie, are outraged---knowing Angie as they do, they pull out all the stops for her. And when Talba goes undercover as a housekeeper for Judge Champagne, she finds a household straight out of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, with the judge playing Big Daddy. The weak son and the hot daughter-in-law are in residence, being "between jobs." Big Mama's absent, though---she died some time ago, and the judge is now adding his fiancee to the mix. That would be Miss Kristin LaGarde, an impossibly lovely, and possibly innocent, young lady who seems hopelessly in love with the old coot.Talba dredges up lots of interesting material; such as that someone was accidentally electrocuted at the marina and that the judge is in bed with certain bail bondsmen. She finds evidence of bribes and kickbacks. He's dirty all right. When the story breaks and the scandal deepens, Judge Champagne winds up dead. And, to her surprise, Talba is asked to investigate. Did politics kill the judge? Or was it his own family?

4 out of 5 stars The Most Credible Mystery I've Read.......2006-01-25

This review is for the Tom Doherty Associates hardback edition published in August 2005, 304 pages. Julie Smith has written twenty novels in four mystery series. The protagonists are Rebecca Schwartz, Paul McDonald, Skip Langdon and Talba Wallis. P. I. ON A HOT TIN ROOF is the fourth novel in the Talba Wallis series. You can become acquainted with the author and her stories at www.JulieSmithAuthor.com.

Talba Wallis is young, black, a computer genius-hacker who, by day, wearing white blouse and navy blue skirt, works as a private eye in New Orleans. At night, wearing colorful silks and a turban, and using the nom de plume "Baroness de Pontalba," she reads her poetry at the Reggie and Chaz restaurant/bar in the French Quarter. Talba lives with her nagging mom, "Miz Clara," who cleaned white folk's homes to put her two kids through college. Corry, Talba's brother, is a doctor, the least of Miz Clara's favored careers for her children (the others being Speaker of the House and President) so Talba being a PI is a bit of a disappointment. Darryl, Talba's boyfriend, is a high school teacher, musician, and sometime bartender supporting his out-of-wedlock daughter. With these down-to-earth characters, Smith weaves entertaining tales with resonant dialogue and vivid descriptions of New Orleans and nearby places.

This episode begins with Talba's lawyer girlfriend being tossed in jail along with her client on trumped up drug charges. It appears that Buddy Champagne, a judge, framed them. Talba assists by maneuvering her way into the Champagne household as a maid to get the goods on the crooked judge.

Much of the first part of the story is set in the Champagne mansion so the reader gets to know the widower Judge, his young girlfriend, his mother-in-law who runs the house, his son and his son's wife who live with him, and his fourteen year old daughter, Lucy. Talba befriends the family, gets the goods on the judge and exposes the old coot. Shortly after the story breaks in the paper, though, the judge is murdered. His girlfriend hires Talba to find out who done it.

Smith's mysteries are not convoluted, plot twisters laden with subtle clues and littered with dead bodies. They are as much character driven as plot driven, and are rich with the culture and ambiance of New Orleans and its surroundings. In this story, Talba briefly gets outside the city to Venetian Isles and later across Lake Ponchartrain to Covington and Mandeville.

P. I. ON A HOT TIN ROOF deals with familial emotions and conflicts, within the Champagne household and between Talba and her mother, her boyfriend's daughter, and particularly with the Judge's daughter. Talba nurtures Lucy's talent for poetry. In the prologue, a long poem introduces the story, and there are a few other poems by Talba and especially by Lucy that deal with her emotions.

With the well-drawn cultural and familial motifs, the story is the most credible mystery I've read.

2 out of 5 stars Slo-o-o-w.......2005-09-19

This is now the third of the Talba Wallis series. I like Julie Smith - especially Skip Langdon series, also set in New Orleans, and the Rebecca Schwartz series.

That's why I've kept up with Talba Wallis books but I find P. I. on a Hot Tin Roof to be a marginally interesting book. The threads of the story have promise but seem to get mired down in detail, complicated by Talba's other life as a poetess, writing/reading as "Baroness de Pontalba". In all, I found this book to be a slow, rather stilted effort, in which the "mystery" almost is lost in all the attempts at portraying the idiocyncratic behavior of the multitude of characters, none of whom comes across with much force or depth. Maybe it's what seems to me to the self-consciousness of a white woman trying to write in a young black woman's voice. It's an OK read but I wouldn't put it at the top of your list.

5 out of 5 stars Another great mystery from Julie Smith!.......2005-08-09

If you love New Orleans then you'll adore Talba Wallis. Cavorting through steamy streets and steamier local characters, Julie Smith puts a sharp focus on the Big Easy's charm. This mystery is a keep you up all night read so start it on a weekend when you can sleep in.

"Breast cancer is never completely over," says author Marisa C. Weiss, M.D., a radiation oncologist. Even when x-rays are negative and doctors proclaim remission, breast-cancer survivors often suffer from continued health problems along with elevated levels of anxiety, and the specter of recurrence is just a small part of the picture.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer: A Survivor's Guide for When Treatment Ends and the Rest of Your Life Begins has won endorsements from both Bernie Siegel and former surgeon general C. Everett Koop. It deftly and with compassion maps out a guide for going back to a "normal" life: for handling fears of recurrence and worries that family members will develop breast cancer and for managing physical posttreatment problems, including the lingering side effects of radiation, fertility difficulties, changes in sex drive, and feelings of unattractiveness.

Living Beyond Breast Cancer is comprehensive--at more than 500 pages, it has the room to thoroughly cover pain control and medication, genetic testing, weight management, hormone and tamoxifen therapy, alternative treatments such as traditional Chinese medicine, breast reconstruction, and the various tests for recurrence, from PET and CAT scans to MRIs and blood testing for cancer markers. It's also a superb reference for emotional issues, from depression and generalized anxiety to insecurities about reentering the job market and revealing the cancer experience to coworkers. Weiss includes many quotes from breast-cancer survivors, so readers know they're not alone. The extensive resources and excellent index add to this book's immense helpfulness. --Erica Jorgensen

3 out of 5 stars Needs to be updated.......2006-02-28

There's a lot of good information in this book...for 1998. Breast cancer treatment and survival has come a long way since then; this book should reflect that. Also, was surprised at how much stuff they covered that *wasn't* post-treatment. A lot of what this book covered was in other books for the newly diagnosed and those going through treatment -- I wanted more about actual life after treatment, not more recaps of breast reconstruction.

    Disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best for Metastatic Information!.......2001-05-07

I've been reading and researching breast cancer on and off for 4 years. A year ago my breast cancer metasticized, and it's hard to find honest information (or any information) about metastatic disease. The title to this book is misleading, because it doesn't mention the fantastic, updated metastatic information. It is by far the most comprehensive, readable treatment of this I've found. I'm ordering several copies to give away.

5 out of 5 stars A comforting guide in the privacy of your home!.......2000-09-04

My daughter was sitting with my husband and myself in the office of my radiation oncologist. She spotted "Living Beyond Breast Cancer" on the bookshelf. She like myself was so lost when we found I had breast cancer. Neither my husband, daughter or myself knew what was going to happen. She began reading the book and could not put it down. When the Dr. came into the room he made comment about the book she was reading. She was so elated with all the facts, which are printed in such simple language that we could understand. The Dr. saw her enthusiasm and offered for her to take it home. Since that time I have not been able to seperate myself from this book. As I progress thru my mastectomy, I find new items of interest. It also helped me understand what my partner, my husband, was feeling. I read one of the chapters to him, at our breakfast table. We sat and cried and agreed that the way he was feeling was as written in the book. I never realized just how much he hurt and how comforting it was to him to know there was a book written that could tell me how he felt.

I have since recommended this book to others. If you cannot get out to support groups or are afraid to go, this book gives you all the support you could ever ask for in the comfort of your home or office. I am 62 years old and a very active business woman. I wondered if my business life was over. The book proved my fears to be very wrong.

For myself and my daughter, it is our lifeline! Thank you Dr. Marisa Weiss and also Ellen Weiss. You have done a tremendous favor to women like me.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a resource that I can relate to and use!.......1998-04-23

This is the type of book I've been wanting. It offers wonderful support and needed information. The authors are empathetic and straight forward, guiding us to reach beyond (hence the title, of course) the psychological boundaries that women who have survived a bout with breast cancer put on ourselves. It offers clear, concise suggestions for what to do now and for facing the future, which may or may not include a recurrance of breast cancer. There are sections which are not applicable to me, but this is bound to be true when a text is so comprehensive. After checking this book out of the library three times, I have realized that this is a book all women who have had breast cancer need to own for themselves.

Gordon Ramsay's Just Desserts is a very fine book of last courses from energetic three-star Michelin chef Gordon Ramsay, expertly marshaled for the domestic kitchen by Roz Denny. Ramsay's imagination is obviously caught by the sweet course: he expends a great deal of innovative thinking to it with fascinating results. He is inclined to roast his fruit, for example, caramelizing it for greater intensity of flavor; or he might deep-fry it, as in the elegant and fantastically nonchalant Fruit Tempura. Asian flavors appear in ethereal dishes like the Thai Rice Pudding with Coconut and Lemon or Banana and Passion Fruit Sorbet. Cheesecake is light and flavored with pumpkin. Proper homage is paid to comfort food, with recipes for Bread and Butter Pudding (Ramsay makes his with a baguette and laces it with Baileys Irish Cream) and Steamed Toffee, Banana, and Pecan Pudding. The chocolate recipes are particularly fine, with a Chocolate Mocha Tart standing out. Just Desserts is also an excellent primer of patisserie techniques; its explanations and illustrations of the standard syrups, pastes, sponges, and pastries of the restaurant kitchen, here translated into domestic terms, are particularly lucid. The professional mysteries of the mousse, the parfait, the bavarois, and the various manifestations of the meringue are made wonderfully clear. --Robin Davidson, Amazon.co.uk

    Book Description

"Life is uncertain ... eat dessert first," says three-star Michelin chef Gordon Ramsay in the first line of Just Desserts. Based on recipes developed at his critically acclaimed London restaurants, the book features Ramsay's classical methods and flair for teaching the basics and beyond. Even complex desserts are made simple with variations to suit the occasion. The first few chapters deal with simpler methods, like roasting fruit to draw out the natural essence or rolling out classic cookies. Then Ramsay takes cooks step-by-step through delicate pastry techniques, expanding their range until they have the confidence to whip up towering souffles that defy gravity. 110 sumptuous color photos accompany these 100 exceptional desserts.

No wonder he's a star in Britain. Fabulous, imaginative recipes covering everything from easy cook basics to recipes you definitely need to practice! Examples - red berries with hibiscus and basil syrup; slow roasted peaches with orange caramel sauce; chocolate and thyme ice cream; apricot and cinnamon mousse; fruit tempura and many more. Not a book for beginners (he is a Michelin 3 Star chef) but very, very good.

          4 out of 5 stars Non-natives are weeds........2006-08-19

This book is one of the best available for some weeds. However, it does name some native plants as weeds because they are toxic to livestock. Weeds are by definition non-native.

          5 out of 5 stars Prime Source.......2006-08-05

This is a prime source for identifying weeds or native flora of the area. It's great fun for what might be a very dull walk and have it turn into a wonderful opportunity to become familiar with this space on earth. Weeds of the West has done this for me and I have enjoyed it immensely. It gives me exactly what I want to know with sharp illustrations. This book is worth the purchase for anyone curious about their surroundings.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for managers, scientists, etc........2006-07-03

As stated in other reviews, this is essentially a picture identification book. If you are looking for a dichotomous key for invasive non-native and native plants for Western states, this does not exactly fit that description, but it is still extremely useful. I know many land managers and scientists who have used this book frequently, and it always gets well-deserved high praise.
I was also very confused about the publication date, edition, ISSN, etc., until I consulted the University of Wyoming Bookstore, which was very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars wrong edition from albris_southwest.......2005-09-08

like the review from Kenneth Asher, he states the ISBN #'s are the same for all editions, which is correct. this makes for incorrect shipping and a pain in the arse trying to get the right book. i ordered the 9th and got the 5th and now the seller is taking the 5th in trying to explain what the hey went wrong.

i rate the book 5 stars, the service 1 star.

5 out of 5 stars Overpriced by the phony publisher.......2004-03-24

This is a wonderful book. The only problem is it is badly overpriced by "DIANE" who states she is the publisher.
The real publisher is the University of Wyoming and this 9th edition priced at $45.00. The real publisher didn't realize they had to get a new ISBN number for the new edition. So the 9th edition bears the old ISBN number 0-941570-134.
Perhaps Amazon could assign a number with the publisher's correct price of $45, not $60.00

A pioneer and leader in the preservation and restoration of native Midwest prairies since the 1930s, the University of Wisconsin–Madison Arboretum has a stellar collection of prairie plant species, including horsetails, ferns, rushes, sedges, grasses, shrubs, vines, and wildflowers. This guide illustrates and describes more than 360 native and introduced species that grow and bloom on the Arboretum prairies and also briefly discusses or mentions many additional species, infraspecific taxa, and hybrids. Its intent is to increase awareness and respect for remaining small prairie remnants, motivate readers to work for prairie preservation and restoration, and encourage the planting of native species in yards and gardens.
Botanist and taxonomist Theodore S. Cochrane has written the text to engage a variety of readers: prairie enthusiasts, gardeners, amateur botanists, younger students learning about plants, and college students and professionals. Nomenclature follows in part the new APG classification system. Richly illustrated with detailed color photographs by Claudia S. Lipke and botanical illustrations and maps by Kandis Elliot, the guide provides a beautiful and informative sample of the flora of the Arboretum and of the southern Wisconsin prairie landscape. Many of the plants, of course, are also found throughout the upper Midwestern United States and in adjacent southern Canada.

5 out of 5 stars Surely the next best thing to visiting the UW-Madison Arboretum in person........2007-05-08

Written by Theodore S. Cochrane (Senior Academic Curator of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Herbarium), Kandis Elliot and Claudia S. Lipke (senior artists in the Department of Botany), Prairie Plants of the University of Wisconsin-Madison Arboretum is a beautiful guide featuring full color photography throughout. Each page of this lavish guide features a different plant, with descriptions of its leaves, flowers, fruits, range and habitats in Wisconsin, and other insights, not to mention multiple images of the species' leaves and flowers especially. A brief introductory section discussing prairies, a glossary, and an index round out this lavish reference, which is surely the next best thing to visiting the UW-Madison Arboretum in person.

                            Book Description

QuarkXPress has long been the standard page layout software, allowing designers to combine pictures, text, typography, writing, editing, and printing in one application. The soon to be released QuarkXPress 4.0 has many significant new features, including Bezier-based drawing and design tools, long-document creation and editing, and advanced Hyphenation and Justification settings. Now, more than ever before, designers will be using QuarkXPress to create everything from newsletters to magazines.

With all of these new features, coupled with the many that already exist, QuarkXPress users are required to remember countless details necessary to successfully use the software. QuarkXPress in a Nutshell is a detailed reference that will enable even experienced users to make the right choices and help them navigate through the many techniques that are available, thus saving time and reducing errors.

In the current computer book market, there is an increasingly large population of users with many years of experience under their belts who don't want a lot of handholding. They just want the facts. This book, like other "In a Nutshell" books, raises the no-nonsense approach to an art form. Information that a user is going to look for again and again can be found here, as well as critical background information for the new but fundamentally sophisticated user.

QuarkXPress in a Nutshell describes every tool, command, palette, and sub-menu in QuarkXPress 4. Each item is accompanied by a list of its most common uses and misuses, as well as production-oriented background information. Where appropriate, the common uses contain step-by-step techniques, and the common misuses include experience-based advice and solutions. The book takes the topic and drills down, expands, and delights the reader by providing useful information that the reader didn't even expect to find.

                            There are four main sections:

                            Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The best reference book for Quark I ever found.......2003-01-04

I've been using Quark for a few year now, and teaching it for a little while, too. I've bought and read many Quark books, but none were even close to this one. This book, "...in a nutshell," is absolutely complete with all possible information you may need, including some tips even I didn't know.
Given, it might be easier for me to read it than a novice, but, as some wrote before, it does an amazing job in describing every single feature that existed in Quark up to version 4.x. Very clear, very direct, well ordered, easy to find information in, including images where images are necessary.
The only downside in my case - which will definitely NOT be the case for everyone - is that the book doesn't have any tutorials or exercises that we can practice with, or have students practice with. I usually use the "Around the Clock" series in my classes, simply because they have a decent (no more than that) tutorial in the end. If this book had one, I'd completely switch to it in a heartbeat.
Thus, if you have some notion of Quark, and want to learn more, get this book; if you know most of Quark, get this book so you can learn more; and, if you think you know all of it, get it and be surprised. Is all I can say. :-)

                            5 out of 5 stars a very comprehensive encyclopedia.......2002-09-08

Possibly the most useful book ever published for Quark 4.

As a reference guide for the Quark user it is indespensible, covering all the features of the software as well as tips and techniques.
Not a book for learning Quark, so not for a complete novice but worth a place on any serious quark users bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars Best Quark reference I've ever used.......2002-08-08

This book will answer every Quark question you can think up. I love this book and all of my coworkers are glad I have it as well.

5 out of 5 stars An EXCELLENT reference.......1999-04-27

This book is an EXCELLENT reference for everything Quark! I keep it in my desk drawer at work, and I refer to it almost daily. This book WILL NOT teach you how to use Quark, but covers EVERY SINGLE menu option, window, and shortcut key. A must have. It covers version 4.0, for both Windows and Macintosh. And, best of all, it's written in the simple and to-the-point O'Reilly style. The cost is right too!

5 out of 5 stars Good reference for little money.......1999-04-12

If you don't know how DTP software works, don't buy this book. This is not a book that teaches you QuarkXpress. It is a book for people that know how to work the program, and need something to look up rarely used functions and keyboard shortcuts. The book does so very well. The explanations are clear, and the shortcut appendix is excellent. On top of that, it costs about half of all the other Quark books...
