Nice Job--Consistent Characterization.......2007-08-19
Although offbeat (and that is a plus in my book), Dean James' mysteries are well-plotted, with consistent characterizations from book to book. Enjoyable and challenging, with characters you can care about.
clichéd and stereotyped.......2007-03-25
Frankly I bought this book because it was at the same time gay-themed and vampire-themed fiction, two real assets when I am looking for entertainment.
In the last years both themes have become increasingly popular and exploited by several authors so that it has become rather difficult to sort out and discriminate quality fiction, average but still entertaining fiction and trash dealing with these topics without having to buy at least the first two episodes of each series which is of course a rather money consuming choice.
Dean James (pun intended?) gives us the usual British country setting with the usual colourful and a little stereotyped characters. The only original touch is that the amateur detective, -hear hear hear: a writer...-, is gay and has been recently turned into a vampire.
The plot is no more than average, exploiting the usual clichés. The main character is not likeable: a judgemental, conformist middle class bloke, extremely full of himself and indulging in lots of mannerisms consistently reflected by the author's writing style, full of unnecessary talks and pointless wit. One could also mention the insistence on clothing which makes me think that Dean James is really a nom de plume for a female writer.
A minor but curious detail is the constant use of double surnames which sound very clumsy, not to mention the fact that the small English village seems a little too crowded by gorgeous men and alternative sexuality: if that were believable I guess a gay man should reconsider the habit of living in large cities.
All above notwithstanding this book was a pleasant read and I am going to buy the second volume to check how the series and the writer's skills progress.
A cozy with teeth!.......2007-02-19
Posted to Death is a both send-up and an homage to the traditional English cozy. Your first clues that James is having you on are the names of the people and places used - Lady Blitherington and Colonel Athelstan Clitheroe are just two of the characters who live in the quaint little town of Snupperton Mumsley. Your next clue is that our hero, Simon Kirby-Jones, is a gay vampire. Sounds fun, doesn't it? But it is an homage to the cozy because James has included the requisite elements of a cozy and has written a good mystery instead of just a spoof.
Posted to Death is set in modern day, and vampires like Kirby-Jones are now able to walk secretly among us during the day due to the miracles of modern medicine. So Kirby-Jones is following his dream and has relocated from the U.S. to Snupperton Mumsley, where he is trying to become a member of the close-knit community. When the snoopy postmistress is murdered, our hero decides that, due to his more-than-human attributes, he is the logical choice to investigate the crime. Our hero proceeds to do what every amateur detective does - he snoops, he encourages gossip, he goes to dinners and teas to meet the locals, and he slowly gathers enough information about the locals to solve the crime.
He also swoons over the dishy vicar and tries not to smile so broadly that his fangs are visible. This book is interesting because it is intelligent, catty, campy, and fun, all at the same time. It is such a funny premise and I am interested to see where James takes it in the books that follow.
Favorite character? Kirby-Jones. Did I guess it? He got me! I followed a lovely red herring right up to the big unmasking before realizing I was on the wrong horse. It was beautiful. Will I read another? Yes.

The book was very entertaining. It's full of quirks and twists that are unexpected. On the whole, a very enjoyable read.
Guilty pleasures in Snupperton-Mumsley.......2006-04-21
The cozy mystery is a rigid form, in that respect rather like a sonnet. The sub-class of English country village cozy mystery, then, might be likened to a Shakespearean sonnet or, in its more baroque form, a Spenserian sonnet. Rigidity of form, however, does not necessarily imply limitation or restriction. In the right hands, the sonnet and the cozy offer springboards for art, even genius.
In this series by Dean James, four published novels as I write, the author is plainly aware of the requirements of his chosen form and is amused by them. While offering them full obeisance, from time to time he is happy to give them a swift kick.
Cozies have tended in recent years to fall into niches: murder-solving caterers, booksellers, hoteliers, florists, undertakers, hairdressers, coffee shop owners, drycleaners, wedding planners, home handy women, even cozy bounty hunters. James gives us the niche to end all niches: the gay, partially closeted, southern, academic, expatriate, romance writing, English country village, reformed vampire, cozy mystery.
Judging by the reactions of previous reviewers of this novel and the others of the series, one either delightedly swallows this stuff whole or strains mightily at the smallest fragment. One reviewer snarls that, "the characters have the depth (but not the appeal) of graham crackers; the stereotypical British-isms are painful; the plot is so bad it should be staked through the heart". Another, in a frenzy of disdain says, "It is poorly executed and too clever by half." Now that, when you think about it, is a pretty good trick.
As for myself, I know full well that James's quaint English village of Snupperton-Mumsley exists on no portion of this mundane, sub-lunar world and his characters, from the appalling but oddly attractive Lady Prunella Blitherington down to the busy-body post mistress bear only the most casual resemblance to anyone who has ever drawn a breath of real air or grumbled at a tax bill. Nevertheless, I am entangled in their spell and have every intention of wolfing down every Snupperton-Mumsley tale that Dean James chooses to deliver.
Five stars for the guilty pleasure of it all.

Fantastic.......2002-04-23
Winnowill is at her worst and Rayek is shockingly (almost endearingly) vulnerable as the target of her latest manipulation. So our arrogant SharpDark Highthing desires not only power beyond his wildest dreams, he wants to be loved...
True to the original quest, the book is packed with dramatics: the reunion of Dewshine and Scouter, Two-Edge's confrontation with Clearbrook, Tyldak being noble, a last minute rescue from a soul-brother, Leetah grappling with Cutter's mortality, elfin homocide, and the final destruction of Blue Mountain.
Of course, its always refreshing when an under-exposed character finally gets his chance to save the day. Go Dart! AOOOOYAAAH! ^_~ My only quarrel is with Aroree, who has been reduced to a powerless, doe-eyed victim whose only hobby seems to be stalking Skywise.
Great book.......1999-07-03
Fantastic pictures. Tells of how the wolfriders escape from Blue Mountain(again)and more.
Uncovers a lot of hidden secrets of Two-Edge, and of Willow........1998-09-08
This book is great, because it uncovers the truth about Two-Edg's birth and childhood. Also it gives more description on how Winllow used to be, before she became evil. For the first time you se what Two-Edg's father looked like. I rcomend this book to big Elf Quest fans every where.

James M Quayle M.D........2007-05-13
This book is a great asset especially for guys who are trying to learn how to cook and eat in a healthy way. The recipes are specific...how long to sear scallops. I endorse the berries and ginger sauce (P 75)..great with vanilla yogurt. The Mescun Salad with blood oranges is great as is the pea soup (P 129). And I am just getting started. This is the way the U.S. needs to learn to eat.....for health and quality of life! The pictures are also very helpful to guys to visualize "presentation". It's a no brainer when you can copy a picture. Thanks Mayo Clinic...you are helping transform a culture.
Excellent Addition to The Mayo Clinic Healthy Weight for Everybody .......2007-04-22
The recipies in this cookbook are such a wonderful addition to our healthy eating plan. I really enjoy the photos, which makes it a lot easier to visualize what it's SUPPOSED to look like! A few people posted that they have a hard time finding the ingredients. If you ask at your local markets, they'll point you to the good stuff. I shop at Trader Joes & Winco and can find everyting at one or the other. If you prefer simple fare, the "Healthy Weight" book has daily menus that are so simple. I use this book probably once or twice a week for special weekend meals or company dinners.
The New Mayo Clinic Cookbook.......2007-01-05
Original and wonderful recipes with beautiful pictures. I've given it to most of my friends.
Excellent Cookbook with Healthy, Easy, Delicious Recipes.......2006-05-23
I was somewhat skeptical when I bought this cookbook as I'd had a hard time finding a cookbook with recipes that were both heathy AND tasted good, and didn't require 100 obscure ingredients and two hours of my life to prepare. But this book surpassed all my expectations, and even though I've had it about six months now, I'm still using it several times a week. The dishes are interesting and generally pretty quick to prepare, and most of them taste so good you wouldn't guess how healthy they are. Even my boyfriend (who is a pizza, beer, and EasyCheese kind of guy) likes these dishes, so apparently they are so good they appeal to even the most unhealthy eaters. Two thumbs up!

Book Description
Good nutrition is the cornerstone of optimal health--feeling good and looking good. In this title, Dr. Whitaker has put together a time-tested cuisine that will promote the wellness and energy you need to enjoy life.
Unlike extreme regimes that call for restrictions of a certain food group (fat in some cases, carbohydrates in others), the recommended recipes in this book are pretty "normal." There are no specific items you have to eat in abundance, nor is anything completely off-limits forever. An occasional indulgence is good for the soul! As the reader has access to his own personal favorites among a variety of fresh, tasty, nutritious foods, it is easy to make this cookbook a mainstay.
In fact, Dr. Whitaker does not like to call his nutrition program a "diet." The word smacks of deprivation and misery. Let's think of it instead as a lifelong nutrition program of fresh, wholesome, mostly unprocessed foods that contribute to health and vitality, and leave you feeling satisfied at the end of each meal.
Customer Reviews:
Results disappointing.......2007-01-10
I really didn't like this cookbook at all. I am very into healthy, low-fat cooking, but I want recipes to be simple and turn out good. Pretty much every recipe I tried in this book (except for the pecan pancakes, which are quite good), turned out flat and tasteless, and often I had to purchase special ingredients and put in a lot of effort and cooking time. I also didn't find too much of a variety here--the recipes are categorized by mealtime so if you are looking, for example, for a lot of creative ways to make salmon or shrimp, you won't find it here. The health information is useful and educational, but doesn't add much to the quality of this book as a cookbook.
Finally, sound information on good nutrition.......2005-09-29
If you are one of the many people looking for sound nutritional information amidst the sea of confusion, I recommend this cookbook. The recipes are simple, easy to follow and very tasty. You will never think about vegetables the same way again!
Even more importantly, the last section features a breakdown of the research that has been done linking diet to disease, and helps to demystify the relationships. They also list recommended websites and resources for additional nutritional information.
I particularly enjoy that they are not trying to sell anything, or convince us to "diet". They are simply providing a new way to think about what's for dinner, and some great solutions for healthy living.
"O" Oprah magazine gives it a great revieww.......2004-06-10
The review in the June 2004 issue of "O" was enough to entice me to want to read it and try some of the recipes. If you don't want to buy the book borrow it from your local library, and if they do not have it request that they purchase it.
Book Description
Featuring sections on daily care, preventive medicine, and training, The Well Cat Book teaches cat owners how to detect signs of illness, diagnose problems, and begin home treatment--thereby avoiding expensive and often unnecessary trips to the vet. Includes over 100 illustrations and step-by-step instructions.
Customer Reviews:
Needs to Be Updated.......2005-01-31
While there is solid medical information here, the information on cat "training" or behavior modification is appallingly outdated. The author states "most cats respond to punishment" and advocates "a spank on the rump as a last resort." Times have changed, and so have behavior modification methods when it comes to felines. Also, very little information was offered on cat psychology or behavior, which if the cat owner is not aware of can lead to unnecessary surrenders to cat shelters when the problem behavior could be modified. This may have been a good cat reference book at one time, but that time has long passed. It needs a lot of updating.
Real Substance.......2002-09-08
Looking for a reliable and helpful reference in caring for my pets, I have looked at and rejected many, many books published for the general public on dog and cat care. Most of them are so general in approach as to be next to useless.
Dr. McGinnis' "Well Dog Book" and "Well Cat Book" are just fabulous. Every line contains meaty, solid, specific information that lets us do our best for our loving, trusting animals. Dr. McGinnis demonstrates respect not only for animals but for their guardians, too.
I have bought many copies of both books and given them to friends, family, and animal shelters. These books went out of print but now apparently they are in a new printing! I'm not surprised -- they are really worthwhile. If you can find a copy anywhere at almost any price, it's worth it!!
This book has been helpful so many times... I'd like to share the most dramatic. Our diabetic cat stopped eating (he usually has a great appetite), began vomiting, and stopped using the litter box. Of course, especially with a diabetic, these symptoms can mean serious problems.
I looked in the "Well Cat Book," and found several very helpful listings in the index (when was the last time you actually found something in an index, and easily?), one of which was that it might be a hair ball.
I took the cat immediately to the veterinarian, who mentioned several diabetes-related possible causes, such as kidney or liver problem, etc. When, thanks to what I'd read in the "Well Cat Book," I wondered aloud whether it might be a hairball, he immediately asked his assistant to x-ray the cat, and sure enough! -- that's what it was. It had entered the intestines and caused a blockage. They expelled the hair ball and the cat was fine.
If it hadn't been for Dr. McGinnis' "Well Cat Book," the poor cat would have gone through many unnecessary procedures, and would have been given unnecessary medications, with unnecessary effects on his body and doubtless getting his diabetes out of control (and the stress on his body of that).
Thank you so much, Dr. McGinnis!
a *must have* book if you care about your cats.......2001-02-20
still use my original 1975 edition that was bought that year, but have seen this re-issue and am glad it is back in print... it is a *must have*. over 21 years, 'the well cat book' has been the saving grace for more cats than i can remember; housepets who needed general care on up to rescuing farm cats that were involved in serious accidents (if you're not the squeamish sort)... most people don't end up in such situations, but the needed information is there.
for the average housecat owner, you will be pleasantly suprised about how much time and $$$ will be saved at the vet on tests/ diagnostics because of the clear, common-sense and descriptive information dr. mcginnis provides.
the really *big* bonus is a *healthy and long life* for your purry companion thanks to all the information about diet and general daily home care!
Still have the original from 1975 (book not cat).......2000-07-03
I have ordered a new copy to make sure that cat design has not changed. People stuff has. We went from putting butter on burns to putting ice on burns. I want to know if I can still put my cat in ice water for heat stroke. So far the occasion has not come up. However I am starting to suspect that cats can read. Every time I pick up the book, the cats run under the bead. My copy does not say much about thyroid disorders. However I find that this is right up there with urinary disorders except more deadly. The best cure is irradiation. However many cats are too old or fragile so they get daily doses of metimazole. I had one that lasted five years on it. The book did tell me how to choose the vet that detected the problem just in time. Now I have a new batch of cats and the latest designer problem is polyps. Evidently there is not very much information on them.
Bottom line is that if you are going to just gat one book or are just starting out then this is the book for you,
The best cat care book I've ever used........1999-02-18
I have used this book for 21 years, having had the same number of cats over those years. I was able to determine if I could do at-home treatment or they needed a vet. Excellent reference, information is easily found and very clear. Highly recommended by "Phisty", et al.

Brookman Stamp Guide.......2004-12-03
Overall, nice. What keeps this item from receiving 5 stars are: 1. there are several (less than 5) mismatches between the descriptions and the corresponding pictures and 2) the guide uses the Brookman numbers when most folks know these stamps by the Scott numbers and 3) the prices are of course, frozen in time, current as of publish date.
On the plus: it's a complete dictionary by country, in chronological order, of every Disney stamp issued. All the stamps (complete sets), their souvenier sheets and variations are displayed and associated together. And lastly, the guide contains some discount coupons (probably long since expired).
I glad I have this guide - it's fun to peruse and helpful to use as reference material.

Book Description
With the growing recognition that a wisely and sensitively planted garden has a lot to offer to wildlife and the food web, more and more people are looking for ways to make their gardens environmentally friendly. However, gardeners have tended to assume that they need a lot of space to create habitats for wildlife and to evoke wild and natural places. In Natural Gardening in Small Spaces, renowned plantsman Noël Kingsbury refutes that presumption, showing how even in a small garden you can create a sustainable ecosystem that looks great --- and, once established, largely looks after itself. More than 150 glorious photographs of small natural gardens provide visual confirmation of Noël Kingsbury's contention that even the smallest garden can provide a natural haven.
Customer Reviews:
Emphasis on natural.......2007-02-15
Kingsbury writes of creating habitat for insects and hedgehogs as well as people, of selecting plants for your soil and water conditions. (He even writes on what grows best in gravel and in bogs.) This book encourages gardeners to be curious and to experiment. It is for those artists who create with plants.
Perfect for the small garden.......2005-05-14
I have a townhouse and very little room to garden, but I've long desired to plan a garden that would blend in with the woods that back up to our house. This book has given me my inspiration and has cemented my decision to plan a garden that will be both natural, peaceful and beautiful. It may take a while, but I'll do it thanks to this book. Have no garden space at all? They even cover that in the "Natural Gardening without a Garden".
Book Description
Create beautiful and relaxing outdoor retreats in small or underutilized gardens. Helpful chapters show how to create a sense of spaciousness and overcome landscaping obstacles such as poor views, too much concrete, or a lack of privacy.
Customer Reviews:
Pretty photos, but limited information.......2003-03-06
First, from the title of the book included at the end of the previous review, I wonder whether the reader placed his or her review with the proper books. The reference to before/after photos, in particular, baffled me -- I can't find many (if any) in this Sunset book.
Like others from Sunset, this book contains extensive (though not especially large) and attractive color photos and color drawings. But for me it lacked suggestions about how to think about small spaces, especially the small lots that abound in suburban subdivisions. If you are able to "borrow" a view or the shade of a neighbor's 60 year old maple, well and good. But if, like many of us dispatched to suburbia, looking at a 53 foot by 27 foot deep back lot overlooked by four other lots, this book will offer little help.
Still, you may be able to grab some ideas from the plentiful pictures. And I found instructions about arbor building to be more complete here than in some other (admittedly woefully inadequate) sources.
I'm looking hard, but I have yet to find the book that addresses the realities of new US subdivisions. What I can say, definitively, is that this is not the book.
What a wonderful book.......2002-02-12
What a wonderful book this is! Before pictures show you what the site was, many beautiful after pictures show how completetely a garden site can be transformed and the text is just so illuminating. There are many different kinds of gardens and different approaches to making them beautiful and useable. If you buy only one book on designing small spaces, Small Spaces Beautiful Gardens should be the one.
Customer Reviews:
Short book, big on landscape tips.......2001-12-26
Despite being less than a hundred pages, LANDSCAPING IN SMALL SPACES presents many good ideas and perspectives about bringing out the best of small gardens. I liked the viewpoint that even large properties can include small garden rooms. Anyone can benefit from this book.
All of the photos carry their weight in illustrating a point. Many are inspirational & some of gardens so beautiful I wanted to see more of the landscape. I liked the "Four Views of One Garden" segment where four landscape architects from different parts of the country designed different gardens for the same nondescript, small backyard. The results were, as expected, very different and interesting in their own ways. And, there were good ideas in each design worth considering for my own garden.
This book presents brief overviews of many concepts that contribute to "making the most of a limited area" to quote the subtitle. However, I wanted to know more about various techniques and found the brevity frustrating. But, all in all, this book is a good reference for tips on landscaping a small area.
Landscaping for Small Spaces by Sunset.......2001-04-25
I wish I'd had this book years ago. Not only does it have wonderful photos and ideas, it's a great instruction book for explaining how to deal with small garden areas and what your goals might be. It goes into detail on how to make the space appear larger, what tricks of the eye, plants and techniques should be used to create the effect you want.

Book Description
This volume of essays is devoted to a careful examination of the importance of methodology in the study of primary religious data. The essays focus on the "Sacred" as an ultimate object of descriptive analysis and critical scrutiny on the part of a select number of North American and European methodologists in the study and teaching of the history of religions and its allied disciplines. The central question to which the contributors respond are these: What is the Sacred? Is it a being or a concept of a being; is it a mental state or an objective reality or something else entirely? Can the Sacred be described as an empirical fact, or as a formal rule for religious inquiry? If the Sacred is a valid category in the study and teaching of religion, then what can be said about the antithesis of the sacred, namely the profane or the secular? This volume probes these questions with great care in order to justify a number of ways the Sacred can be construed as an indispensable notion for the study and teaching of religion.

A Book Of The Book: Some Works and Projections about the Book & Writing
ASIN: 0226165027 |
Book Description
Early in this century, Futurist and Dada artists developed brilliantly innovative uses of typography that blurred the boundaries between visual art and literature. In The Visible Word, Johanna Drucker shows how later art criticism has distorted our understanding of such works. She argues that Futurist, Dadaist, and Cubist artists emphasized materiality as the heart of their experimental approach to both visual and poetic forms of representation; by mid-century, however, the tenets of New Criticism and High Modernism had polarized the visual and the literary.
Drucker suggests a methodology closer to the actual practices of the early avant-garde artists, based on a rereading of their critical and theoretical writings. After reviewing theories of signification, the production of meaning, and materiality, she analyzes the work of four poets active in the typographic experimentation of the 1910s and 1920s: Ilia Zdanevich, Filippo Marinetti, Guillaume Apollinaire, and Tristan Tzara.
Few studies of avant-garde art and literature in the early twentieth century have acknowledged the degree to which typographic activity furthered debates about the very nature and function of the avant-garde. The Visible Word enriches our understanding of the processes of change in artistic production and reception in the twentieth century.
Customer Reviews:
Visibility in Language and Art Exposed.......2006-06-27
In this fabulously demanding book, Drucker traces the development of how we see language, how we conceive of it on the page and canvas, and what the ramifications of that are in the realms of sound and meaning. This very densely written, scholarly text is at each page an explosion of citations and reflections which are the condensation of Drucker's dedicated research (I believe of 10+years!) and her exploration of the movements that define our time of the Word Made Flesh. She will either make you feel like you, too, have done all the work to get to these pages, or lead you off on your own hunt for more. Whichever it is, the journey is well worth the effort.
Great Book on Typography Art Movements and Literature.......2001-02-24
This is a great book that talks about Typography in the early avant-garde age; Futurism, Dada, Cubism. It discusses the relationship between visual art, typography and poetry. It's a great reference on experimental typography.
