Book Description
In his pulse-pounding thrillers, Earl Emerson takes readers into the heart of the world’s most dangerous profession, where the next alarm might bring sudden death. Based on stunning, actual events in the author’s life, this electrifying new novel is a frightening duel between a Seattle firefighter and a man who wants to burn him down. . . .
To a firefighter, there’s nothing worse than a nuisance arsonist. His multiple fires keep a station up at night, running in circles, and more vulnerable at the next “real” call. And in Seattle, Lt. Paul Wollf of the Station Six’s ladder truck hates a pyro more than most. Two decades before, an arsonist’s fire killed Wolff’s firefighter father, sending his mother into a spiral of depression and triggering a chain of events that left his brother in jail for murder and Wollf alone, seething in anger and isolation.
Already disciplined for punching out a superior officer, Wollf is now taking a young female firefighter under his wing. Despite the stationhouse leers and jokes, Wollf is only doing what comes naturally, helping out an underdog and bucking the system. But soon he and Cindy Rideout find themselves in a fierce political battle inside the department, just as a pyro starts to turn Seattle into his private little hell.
With fires springing up across the city, Wollf begins to see a pattern. The fires being set are coming closer and closer to Station Six. And when a crucial piece of evidence turns up, Wollf suspects the unthinkable: this pyro has turned him into a fiery target.
In Paul Wollf, Earl Emerson has created a hero on the brink. For when the pyro’s rampage puts Wollf in the public limelight, Wollf must choose between his burning rage and the chance to step back–for once–and see a shocking truth hidden beyond the heat.

1. THE PIANO MOVER FROM HELL
Life has been a rocky road since that morning nineteen years ago when my brother and I killed Alfred. For want of a better term, the police said Alfred was our mother¿s boyfriend, but we never thought of him as anything but an interloper, not until the moment Neil and I found our sneakers stuck to the floor in his blood.
The morning of the murders my brother was eight days shy of his thirteenth birthday. I was ten.
The papers called it an execution-style slaying, and it was partially due to their distorted portrayal of the event that my brother was tried and sentenced and packed away to a long series of increasingly harsher juvenile detention facilities. We made some mistakes that morning. Not that, given the same circumstances, we wouldn¿t kill Alfred again. Because we would.
In later years, our memories pasted over with hope and optimism, we decided that last drunken squabble between our mother and Alfred T. Osbourne started because Mother had been on the cusp of throwing him out. Maybe she¿d found the gumption to do so. We certainly wanted to believe it. She¿d never be able to tell us, since she died that morning too.
We had thought life was about as bad as it could get until Alfred and his stinky feet and seminal flashes of madness came along. He was meaner than a boot full of barbed wire, and more often than not Neil was the object of this meanness. It was a testament to Neil¿s courage that he didn¿t run away.
¿I¿m not leaving him with you and Mother. That is not an option. You just remember where we keep Uncle Oren¿s Spanish Civil War revolver if we ever need it.¿
¿I know where.¿
When she wasn¿t drinking, our mother was too fragile to look out for the family, and when she was drinking, she was too drunk. Neil was the one who looked out for us. He¿d been in that role for years.
It was mystifying how our mother ended up with two men of such dif

Watch out, or you might get burned.......2006-04-15
Earl Emerson splits his time between his real-life occupations - writing, and working as a firefighter in Washington state. And after a lengthy, successful detective series, he's turned to what he knows and has set his last several novels in the firefighter milieu.
I was pleasantly surprised by his Thomas Black private eye novels, mainly because I grew to like the characters so much. Even so, I've found his books to be frustrating reads. They tend to be full of hyper-quirky characters that do and say things that have absolutely no bearing on either story or plot (or what anyone would really do in a similar situation, for that matter).
This is the first of his firefighter novels I've read. And I can't get into it at all, for a lot of the same reasons.
Emerson should know his stuff. Here, everything seems right; the accuracy is all there from a technical standpoint, and who better to write about firefighting than a real life firefighter. But this is the deal: you can feel Emerson hiding behind the writing, working hard to craft his twisty-turny plots and his goofy characters. With Pyro, he splits the narrative into (so far) seemingly half a dozen different points of view, which completely distracts from the flow of the book. You need a scorecard to keep track of who's who.
Drives me crazy. But I struggle on, `cause Emerson's such a likeable mug. Maybe someday I'll actually get around to finishing it...
Not Quite Up to Smoke Room, but Suspenseful Read on its own.......2006-02-27
Having recently read and loved Earl Emerson's Smoke Room, I went directly on to a previous book, Pyro. Like Smoke Room, Pyro is a stand-alone suspense novel that takes place in and around a fire station. Unlike Smoke Room, the story has multiple narrators and a more widely focused plot that, while still suspenseful, doesn't reach the claustrophobic, near unbearable, oh-my-god-how-is-he-going-to-get-out-of-this levels that Smoke Room did.
There's a nuisance arsonist plaguing the area around Seattle's Station Six, driving all the firefighters mad with multiple nightly calls, but Lt. Paul Wolff has a special hatred for the perpetrator as his father was killed in an arson fire when he was just a kid, and his surviving family went on a downward spiral that they still feel the effects of--Paul may be the "success story" of the family, with an alcoholic murdered mother and a brother in prison, but he's still dangerously unstable emotionally, even if he keeps it well under wraps.
The arsonist's attention seems to be more and more personal, though, seeming to center on Station Six and possibly even on Paul Wolff. The unthinkable slowly begins to seem possible--is this arsonist the very same one who took the life of his father and is now knowingly toying with him? And if he is, what will Wolff do if and when the man is caught?
Emerson, a professional firefighter himself, fills the book with authentic details of firefighting techniques and every day station life and politics that add a dimension to the story beyond the mere suspense plot, and that's one of the things that has attracted me to his books. In Pyro, the narration moves from Wolff to other characters, most notably a female trainee under him who is doing her best to prove her worth and get through her probationary period, but who is being plotted against by supervisors without her knowledge. This plot was almost as intriguing to me as the main story and made me wonder what the inspiration for it might have been in Emerson's real life career.
The multiple viewpoints made things interesting but as I said, somewhat less focused, and I didn't find the fairly stereotypical psycho bad guy nearly as compelling as the good-guys-gone-bad in Smoke Room, but on its own this novel remains a very good read with interesting characters and a page-turning plot. Definitely worth a look!
Exhilarting.......2005-09-30
I have long been a fan of Earl Emerson and am very excited that he has broadened his style. This book is a thriller that I found hard to put down. While written in the style of several different characters point of view the story still maintains velocity and suspense. My heart is still pounding after the book finishes with a very satisfying end that does not compromise the main character. I could almost feel the flames on my face and hear the crackling of a building burning down. Like any exhilarting ride the only downside is that it comes to an end too quickly.
A real page turner.......2005-09-11
I just started reading Earl Emerson's books, which involve Firefighters and I became immediately hooked. His books are real page turners, with lots of plot twists. The characters are all pretty realistic with their human flaws. Having recently graduated from the Fire Academy, Pyro was even more interesting for me, because one of the main characters is a female firefighter who is also a new recruit. Earl Emerson's books are well written and entertaining.
Evolution of a writer.......2005-08-22
Emerson's characters have always been memorable, one of the strengths of his writing. However, in the serial characters of Thomas Black and Mac Fontana, the stories were largely propelled by events outside the characters themselves. In stepping away from that world into the stand-alone novels he's writing now, Emerson's skill in characterization comes to the fore. Always tightly woven and skillfully plotted, now his novels are driven by the characters themselves, their daily lives, their histories, their traumas, their coping skills (or lack thereof). As a result, what were enjoyable, fun, well-done if typical genre novels have become riveting and intense tales in their own right.
I'm particularly impressed with "Pyro." Paul Wollf is as believable and real as his past is--traumatic and horrific as it turns out to be. It's particularly impressive that Emerson doesn't try to make his characters "nice" or apologize for their flaws. He simply turns them loose and lets the chips fall where they may, and tells the story as it follows. While I originally found the multiple points of view distracting, they were so skillfully handled by Lt. Emerson that it didn't take more than a section or two before each character's insight became indispensible to properly telling the tale. One or two twists concerning the protagonist, Paul Wollf, became obvious to me early on, twists that weren't actually explained until towards the end of the novel. But I don't believe they were meant to be hidden--and what I thought I knew only increased the tension and kept me even more riveted to the story.
There aren't many books I "can't" put down, but this was one I had to stick with until the end--which was about 1:15 a.m last night. I've read and enjoyed all of Lt. Emerson's other books, and I won't be unhappy if he does decide to return to the worlds of Mac Fontana and Thomas Black in the future. But "Pyro" stands head and shoulders above the others--though "Into the Inferno" is close beside it.
I found Lt. Emerson's novels because of a fondness for mysteries and a fascination with firefighting and firefighters; I've stayed because he tells a damn good tale. He states on his website that he made the decision to step away from the "tried and true" formula of his series characters into the world of "stand alone" thrillers to challenge himself as a writer. In "Pyro," he's not only met the challenge, he's exceeded it.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Ellis has a complex, sophisticated and highly entertaining Wold Newton type take on comics literature. Using his own characters, of course, but this is just all around fabulous. The story takes a turn, as Snow gets more aggressive about taking the fight to The Four. They are starting to learn perhaps they should not have messed with him.
Superhero's that aren't here to just hit thing's.......2007-04-22
I love this comic, because you have great characters that Warren Ellis always writes. The characters also have powers, but these powers do not define the comic or the team. They aren't here to punch stuff, we'll not solely anyway. They are archeologists, seekers of the past and the truth. That is always their first goal, and if they get into a brawl along the way, so much the better. Highest possible recommendation on this one.
Things Start to Come Together.......2006-10-18
Numerous people have told me that Planetary is one of the best comic series of the new milennium, but after reading the first two volumes, I just couldn't see what people saw in the series. It wasn't bad by any means, it just wasn't amazing. However, after rigorous recommendation by some people that I trust very much when it comes to comics, I finally picked up the third volume, and I can finally say that I see why people praise this book so much.
In these 6 issues, we start to see how things are connected along with some of Elijah Snow's previous exploits, both before the formation of Planetary and as his time as the project advisor when Ambrose Chase was still on the team. Also, the team's plan to catch and stop The Four is put in motion in the 6th issue, and it is a very nice plan indeed.
To quote one of the people who kept pushing me to go on with this series, Planetary is very much a slow-burning story. Even though each issue is a stand-alone, everything is tied together; all of the main and peripheral characters are somehow connected to each other and to various places and events. Multiple reads are a must in order to get everything, but this is definitely a series that people should stick with, as it is very good, and seems to only get better.
To John Q.......2006-01-12
I don't usually write into these things but I had to quickly comment on the John Q. Public "vhspreowner" review. First of all I have a hard time understanding how he got that Ellis hates himself. Also I've read all the Planetarys so far and don't see huge problems with the dialog between men and women. Maybe in Transmetropolitan but that's a different story entirely. (I love that book too btw). Lastly being a writer and editor did anyone edit his review? Much in the way of spelling and grammar problems unless it's a hip new way of writing that I don't get. Not sure if this kind of thing gets posted but I'm doing it anywho. Gotta stick up for Ellis!
One of the few comics that gives you a sense of wonder........2005-10-11
This third collection of Planetary continues the story with the high quality writing and beautiful art of the other two volumes. Planetary is an elegant piece of work of high intelligence and literate appeal. Where else would you find a story that takes place in the castle of a mad scientist one moment, ancient China for a Crouching Tiger style interlude for another moment, and still remain its own thing? Planetary well worth getting into.

Gives straight answers to questions like when drinking alcohol is beneficial and when it's not
Offers advice on behavior modification and stress control

important to men, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, erectile dysfunction, and kidney and bladder problems
Provides an easy-to-navigate guide to the health-care system that gives balanced views on the benefits and drawbacks of common medical tests
With the authority that only the world's largest and best-known medical school can provide, and the lively, clear presentation that is the hallmark of Harvard Men's Health Watch, the monthly newsletter edited by Dr. Simon, The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health is an essential reference for every man -- and for everyone who cares about a man's health.
Customer Reviews:
Bladder cancer from smoking?.......2006-03-19
Life saving information is in this very well written book. I learned smokers can develop bladder cancer besides the norm such as heart disease. Get this book if you are past 40 and/or avoid seeing a doctor for checkups. There are many easy to read articles in this book which you may feel too embrassed to discuss with your doctor.
The best men's medical reference book.......2004-07-01
This is an excellent medical reference book for men. The information is very well organized into three separate parts: 1) what makes men different, 2) what makes men healthy, and 3) men's main diseases, how to prevent them, test for them, and treat them. The book is quite long at 470 pages. But, it reads easily. And, it makes for an excellent medical reference to go back to when you want specific scientific information on various men's health topics.
The best part about the book is that it is based on extensive medical studies. The advice provided is the result of statistically significant conclusions derived from these studies. Thus, the objectivity, integrity, and intelligence derived from this book is so much greater than from any of the medical authors positioning themselves as the current diet or health care guru.
The book confirms the value of EFV. The ultimately healthy lifestyle consists of a lot of Exercise with a diet that includes lots of Fruits and Vegetables. These three factors (exercise, fruits, vegetables) appear to be universal protectors against all age related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases and cancer. Similarly, the high risk factors regardless of the health risk considered seemed to be always the same, including: smoking, obesity, lack of exercise, lots of saturated fats and trans fats in the diet.
The book has a ton of information besides the self-evident basics mentioned above. There are lots of tables, graphs, and summaries that make the information easy to retrieve. These include info on BMI, PSA test levels, blood pressure and cholesterol levels, recommended frequencies of screening tests, recommended dosage and toxic levels of vitamins and minerals, Glycemic index, life expectancy charts, and lots more interesting stuff.
With the medical knowledge derived from this book, you will be in a far better position to take care of your health and initiate a mutually productive dialogue with your general practitioners and specialists. The World is getting increasingly complex. Technology and science evolve rapidly. Nowhere does this increasing complexity have a greater impact than on healthcare. This book will help you understand your health, risk factors, relevant testing, and cures to be considered.
As we age, we will invariably be faced with some challenging options and decisions. This book is a great road map to help us out along the way. If you are well informed, it takes a lot of anxiety out of the equation. That takes care of a major health risk already [stress and anxiety]. This book is good for you!
Along the same line of excellent health related information, I also strongly recommend another great book from Harvard Health Publications: "Eat, Drink, and Be Healthy" by Walter C. Willett. It is the best book on diet and nutrition I have ever read. And, that is also because it is based on scientific studies, and not on subjective opinions from egocentric blowhards.
An excellent resource.......2002-12-17
This book is packed with information on men's health. It covers everything from diet and exercise, through men's maladies (prostate, bladder and problems of the genitals). It covers everything in an easy-to-understand manner that includes many charts and diagrams. In particular I appreciated the section on exercise and stretching, and have revamped my exercise regimen based on this book. I am glad I got this book, and recommend it to all men.
A Must Have for Men!.......2002-11-17
My husband I found this book to be very informative. The material was presented in a lucid and engaging fashion. We found the chapters on diet, exercise, and prostate especially helpful.
A Helpful Guide to Men's Health.......2002-11-04
I got the book to restore peace to my health club workouts. As my friends have turned 50, many have been asking "Dr. Joel" about prostate cancer. I'd be glad to answer, but it's not exactly my end of the body, since I'm a dentist. I read the two chapters on prostate cancer, but then I went back to read the rest of the book. I don't want to be an instant expert, but I now have a quick answer to all of the questions: read The Harvard Medical School Guide to Men's Health for yourself. It's really an excellent book.
Book Description
Roger VergT's first memories were of the tiny spring vegetables grown by his father. Former proprietor of the world famous Moulin de Mougins in the south of France near Cannes, a restaurant with two stars in the Michelin guide, he was not content to leave vegetables where they are so often consigned by classical French cuisine--as a garnish to accompany meats or fish--but explored all their culinary possibilities.
The result is Roger VergT's Vegetables in the French Style, a tribute to his love affair with vegetables. It contains 150 recipes for sauces, soups, salads, gratins, terrines, and other ways of bringing out the natural goodness of high-quality produce. Recipe headnotes and sidebars add scores of exciting cooking and serving ideas, encouraging improvisation. Section introductions provide important advice on how to choose the best vegetables in the market. An extensive appendix details the classic methods of vegetable cookery--poaching, sweating, braising, frying, and baking--as well as today's favored methods--steaming, stir-frying, and grilling. One hundred color photographs show elegant and simple finished dishes as well as succulent fresh vegetables.

Creme de la creme.......2004-09-19
There is no better book out there about cooking vegetables. From beginning to end Verge communicates his love and knowledge of vegetables. From the very simple to the technically challenging, the recipes herein contained are not to be out done. So good in fact are these recipes that I was inspired to travel to France just to eat in Verge's restaurant. Sound stupid? If you make even 10 of the recipes in this book you might not think so.
Merci Monsieur Verge.......2004-04-15
If I could write a letter to Monsieur Verge I would thank him for sharing his passion for vegetables and transporting me to France each time I open this beautiful book. The recipes are outstanding and although some may intimidate the novice cook, I urge you to try them. The results will delight and you will find they are not as difficult as you may have thought. A favorite book and a pleasure to look at with a nice glass of Chardonnay. But not for long...you'll soon be back in the kitchen!

Book Description
"Cats and flowers have played so large a part in my life that I can scarcely think of one without the other," Beverley Nichols reflects in his Cats' X. Y. Z. This volume details the further adventures of "Four," "Five," and Oscar, introduced into the limelight in his Cats' A. B. C. but also making appearances in others of his books. "Four" is the black cat who does "the Act," feigning neglect to attract attention and gain his way. "Five," with the smallest appetite of the three, is yet round and plump. Though he bulges slightly over the edge, he chooses the sixth step on the staircase on which to lie because a hot water pipe is concealed in the wall behind it. Oscar, on the other hand, eats like a horse yet is lean and lanky; he is also the largest of the three cats, the youngest and the most energetic. Nichols wrote dozens of books on topics ranging from politics to gardens, and here muses on his feline companions' charms, proper care, and appreciation. We are choosing to publish these out-of-Timber-niche books because they are pure fun and because of the enthusiastic reception our reprints of Nichols's gardening books have received.
Customer Reviews:
You Will Laugh Out Loud.......2007-10-04
The late Beverly Nichols was an eccentric Englishman who wrote mostly about gardening and some other topics. In his gardening books and autobiographies you will often find him digressing about his cats. He finally decided that since the cats kept creeping into anything he wrote that he had better devote a book to them.
This is the second of two books dedicated to his cats and their "lifestyles." In it you will find much information about cats in general that is very useful if you are a new cat owner and much that will have veteran cat people nodding in agreement and laughing out loud. He talks about people as being F or non F (for feline)and draws humorous pictures of the people who wander in and out of the cats' world. He is not a "cat expert" but he gives us all an insight into the private lives of cats. There is obviously more to any cat than meets the eye.
If you love cats, buy this!

In response to demand from landscape architects and home gardeners, Natural Landscaping returns to print in an updated and expanded second edition. It is unique in its focus on plant communities; it approaches landscape design as the establishment of natural ecosystems, rather than mere planting of specimens. Emphasizing the natural landscapes of the northeastern United States and eastern Canada, this book
o reviews landscaping principles and techniques
o introduces native plant species for grasslands, forests, edge areas, and small wetlands
o illustrates how to evaluate a site and plan for visual effect and maintenance
o presents the issues involved in restoring bogs, ponds, and other wetlands
o offers practical advice on reducing chemical use while still combating invasive plants
o addresses social, legal, design, and planting problems often encountered on residential sites
o discusses natural landscaping for public parklands, civic buildings, school grounds, and corporate properties
Customer Reviews:
Essential resource.......2002-10-08
Natural Landscaping is an essential resource for anyone interested in landscaping with native plants. The importance of learning to use native plants is so important as we face continuing droughts in various parts of the country, including here in Williamsburg, VA. The book is so full of information that I find myself going back to it often. Many thanks to the authors for this fine volume.
Cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands.......2002-10-07
Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Natural Landscaping: Designing With Native Plant Communities by licensed architect and landscaping authority John Diekelmann and natural plan restoration expert Robert Schuster is a fascinating, "user friendly" instructional guide on basic landscaping principles, as well as cogent, authoritative advice on how to restore wetlands and introduce native plant species for wetlands, grasslands, forests, and more. Black-and-white photographs as well as an inset section of color plates wonderfully illustrate this meticulous, fact-filled, professional quality, highly recommended "how-to" guide for anyone aspiring to enhance or restore native plant communities.
This is a wonderful resource.......2001-10-26
I have the 1982 edition of this book - I stumbled across it and have been amazed ever since that such a book was written in 1982 before this approach to gardening/landscaping was popular.
It is tailored to the midwest, but the technical solidity and sound design concepts should apply anywhere.

Book Description
Among the newly published texts of the Qumran Library there are a good number with eschatological content. Some of these texts relate the eschatological activity of certain figures who seem to play an important role in the events of the eschaton. This study explores these figures.
The material of this study is divided into two main parts. The first is analytical, in which the related textual material is investigated, each passage in turn. The second, systematic section contains the evaluation and discussion of the data provided by the analyses of the first part.
These analyses are especially relevant for scholars of both the Old and New Testaments and for all those interested in early Jewish thought at the turn of the era.
