Rider at the Gate is the first in a two-book series chronicling the existence of human colonists stranded on a planet whose only native life forms are linked by telepathy, sending sensory images to one another enhanced by powerful emotions. One of these species, the "nighthorse," befriends the humans, and together they form a bond of mutual protection--the nighthorses guard their riders against the planet's mind-clouding predators, while the humans provide them with food and shelter. Once matched, the two experience a companionship more profound than either has ever known before. The story continues in Cloud's Rider.

Coming of Age.......2006-10-04
C.J. Cherryh is well known for her ability to develop wonderful ecosystems for the worlds she creates. Even though her worlds are fantastical, they always speak to what is most human. In Rider at the Gate and its sequel Cloud's Rider, Cherryh does not disappoint. We get a mostly recognizable landscape inhabited by previously starfaring humans and the native telepathic fauna. Among the native fauna of this unnamed planet is the fierce and intelligent nighthorse. Nighthorses are curious and addicted to the thoughts and emotions of the human mind and often choose a particular human to be a "rider." The symbiotic relationship that develops between nighthorse and rider is a strong connection meant to be mutually beneficial but sometimes results in a pairing of devastating proportions. Within this alien system Cherryh builds a beautiful coming of age story that captures the often painful and baffling aspects that accompany the human journey to adulthood -- desparate feelings of longing, loneliness and a desire to be independent yet "fit in."
Cherryh is known to take quite a bit of time developing her story and I suggest patience when starting this set. I didn't feel completely drawn into the story until about page 150 of the first book, but after that point couldn't put the books down.
Rider at the Gate.......2006-05-10
In a brilliantly imagined alien ecosytem where telepathy is a means of survival for a menagerie of mostly dangerous species, a girl forms a dangerous bond, and the young rider Danny with his nighthorse Cloud must try to stop her before she kills... again.
CJ Cherryh is the pre-eminent writer of alien worlds, and this may be my favorite world of all. I love the idea of telepathy as an evolutionary force, and I love the nighthorses, the omnivorous, mean, un-cute horselike creatures that form lifelong telepathic bonds with humans. The plot, which could have easily degenerated into sentimental wish-fulfillment foolishness, is grim and riveting, and the characters are both appealing and realistic.
The sequel, Cloud's Rider, is similar in theme and quality. It seems to me that a third book must have been intended; since we're going to get a Fortress sequel after a long hiatus, maybe there's still hope.
Scary, Suspenseful, Original.......2005-02-12
What a great story! Imagine you are a colonist to America in the 16th century, and that bears can make themselves invisible. Every time you step outside you could be eaten and you'd never know until it started. That is what this snowy world is like. Another believable planet and another amazingly logically built culture that fits the enviornment. A wonderful story about courage ,honor and love. Ms. Cherryh also shows again her love for horses.
Typically Cherryh, and typically well written.......2005-01-04
[I rate this 4.5 stars.]
C.J. Cherryh's writing, like Mozart's music, has a consistent feel that easily identifies the author after a few brief passages. In Cherryh's case there's always external conflict that's amplifying the internal conflict in the characters' minds. Anguished thoughts bouncing around inside the protagonist's skulls and inadequate words failing to bridge the gaps separating their different viewpoints are a hallmark of her novels. Usually there are mundane reasons for the communication failures such as different backgrounds, ages, and levels of maturity. In "Rider at the Gate" Cherryh provides a more intrinsic reason to throttle understanding between the people involved.
On the unnamed planet where the story is set the native fauna are telepathic. Predators sniff out the mental odor of their prey. The higher up the food chain you go, the more telepathic tricks the animals employ. At the top of the chain are the nighthorses. who can project their presence where they're not, or fabricate a completely different landscape from the one your eyes perceive. When they first encountered human colonists the nighthorses were delighted to be around humans' higher-level though processes; telepathically, humans just smelled good. And while their inability to cope with telepathic local animals quickly knocked the bulk of the colonists back to scattered fortified settlements and circa-1900 technology, those who bonded with nighthorses were able to move through the wilderness relatively easily.
The bond with nighthorses comes with a price, of course. Because humans can't transmit telepathically themselves, their nighthorse-mediated communication is filtered through the alien mindsets of their telepathic companions. Lacking much concern for past or future in their conceptual framework, the nighthorses use their human riders to remember such things and give the nighhorses a broader perspective. And while the riders have greatly improved survival prospects, they struggle to communicate with other humans. To keep from spooking the horses the riders constantly damp down their emotions, and keep their concentration strictly on present concerns. The mental conditioning that makes for a good rider also results in a human who doesn't play well with others.
"Rider at the Gate" begins with a message of great emotional impact: a rider and her horse have been killed, spooked by a rogue nighthorse. Just this single message, amplified by a camp of nighthorses, is enough to lead to near-riot conditions in the large town of Shamesey. Danny Fisher, a local boy newly bonded with a horse named Cloud, is both part of the cause and one of the victims of this panic. Feeling he has a debt to pay, Danny volunteers to help hunt down the rogue nighthorse.
I won't go into greater detail and spoil the story (which continues with "Cloud's Rider", although "Rider at the Gate" stands on its own just fine). It's a story of understanding attained with great effort and personal sacfifice -- the typical finely crafted novel that's typically Cherryh.
Grabs hold and doesn't let go........2000-06-20
This is a combination science fiction, fantasy, and semi-horror story and a great story it is. The first thing I look for in a fiction book is a strong story and C.J. Cherryh is a first class story teller. The book almost made me feel as though I were part of the story. The characters are all well developed and mostly interesting and the interplay between humans and night horses is charming and also well done. There is a high level of suspense here and the book just really plays on the emotions.

"The magic key to health, happiness, and romance is waiting for you in your local health food store," says relationship guru John Gray, Ph.D. Not only do men and women have different communication and love styles, they gain and lose weight differently and need different diets, asserts Gray, author of the bestselling Mars and Venus series. Though he does not have credentials in exercise, nutrition, or weight management, Gray creates a program that, he claims, balances each gender's brain chemistry, resulting in health, weight loss, stress management, and romance. Gray analyzes the specific brain chemicals, hormones, and reactions to stress that affect men and women differently and influence relationships. He recommends an eating plan involving at least three meals a day; replacing breakfast with a low-calorie, nutritious breakfast shake; taking amino acid supplements; drinking "cleansing nutrients"; and avoiding junk food. The exercise prescription is only seven pages long (out of 314), consisting of his "bounce, shake, breathe, and flex" program. This may stimulate brain chemicals, but it doesn't do much for cardiovascular or muscle conditioning. Gray seems more concerned with avoiding getting too much exercise than getting enough or the right kind (according to exercise professionals). --Joan Price

M & V Diet and Excercise Solution.......2007-03-19
VERY educational and scientifically based! We really benefitted from these CD's...
Effective Diet Solution.......2006-11-10
Offered a lot of good information about living a healthy lifestyle, mostly about buying products though. If you don't have a good amount of money, don't expect to stay on this diet.
John Gray and Isagenix = Perfect Combination.......2006-09-04
John Gray, for any who have had the pleasure of seeing him in person, is an absolutely amazing speaker. He is a genuine person who cares about people. He's funny, he's highly intelligent, and he really understands the fundamental differences between men and women. We are truly different creatures.
He created the Mars and Venus Wellness Solution as an all natural alternative to prescription medications for depression, bipolar, ADD, ADHD and similar issues. John teamed with Isagenix, an international Health and Wellness company that I also represent, because he found that his personal experience with Isagenix products was that they helped to "create the brain chemistry of health, happiness, and lasting romance" - the very foundation of his work with men and women and relationships. John worked with our formulator to create a new line - the Mars Venus Wellness Solution, "the first and only program ever created that's designed to support healthy brain chemistry while considering the unique and special needs that make men and women different."
These products are fabulous. This is what the book is about. This is not an attempt to market on the weight loss craze - it is a natural progression in John's work to help men and women become healthy physically and emotionally.
John Gray is phoney.......2006-04-13
Don't buy this book, please! The man is a complete fake. He's degrees are totally worthless. He is making money off of people looking for help and tricked into believing his marketing hype. Just do some research on Google and you'll discover the truth about him.
Is it an info-mercial or a book? .......2006-02-20
This book is horrible! It is uninsightful and utterly pointless. The first 200 pages build an advertisement riddled case for healthy diet and exercise that leaves you less than conviced that John Gray has any idea what he is writing about. Maybe there is a reason the U.S. has outlawed some of the treatments that are espoused with giving Mr. Gray his "insight" into what our bodies need? The scientific data was never openly stated, but shrouded in mysterious, sensational statements such as "the same diet plan may cause a woman to gain weight and a man to lose weight." This book left me wondering if John Gray actually believes this stuff or whether he is just trying to fulfill a book contract with his publisher.
I hope that this review does not dissuade you from ever purchasing a book by John Gray. If you have never read "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" then I highly recommend that you purchase it and refer to it often. It is a truly amazing and well written insight into the minds of men and women. Check it out and leave this diet book on the shelf for someone else.

High blood cholesterol is one of the major risk factors for heart disease, the number one cause of death in the U.S. Experts recommend reducing dietary cholesterol and saturated fat. This means cutting down on the animal fat present in meat and eating more high-fiber, high-quality, complex carbohydrates. To help you do this, the American Heart Association has developed the Step-One Diet and the Step-Two Diet. Both are similar in recommending that 30 percent or less of your calories come from fat, 10 to 20 percent from protein, and 50 to 60 percent from carbohydrates. The Step-Two is more restrictive of saturated fat and cholesterol.
The AHA makes these changes easy to put into action with 200 recipes and clear explanations of how to shop, cook, and substitute ingredients. You'll learn alternatives to high-fat staples. For example, make Mock Sour Cream with skim milk, lemon juice, and low-fat cottage cheese, or try the Artichoke and Spinach Spread instead of mayonnaise. Blend peanut butter with cooked carrots to keep the peanut taste while lowering the fat. The recipes include a variety of appetizers, soups, salads, fish, poultry, meat, vegetarian dishes, vegetables, sauces, breads, and desserts. There's nothing austere or "diet"-like about these recipes: Spinach-Stuffed Pizza, Beef Stroganoff, Crispy Oven-Fried Chicken, Halibut Kabobs, Chinese Vegetable Stir-Fry, and treats like Mocha Cheesecake and Chocolate Soufflé. Each recipe includes a nutrient analysis of calories, protein, carbohydrate, fat (total, saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated), cholesterol, and sodium.
You'd be smart to avoid the popular and unhealthy eat-all-the-meat-and-fat-you-want fad diets and take your nutritional advice from an organization that exists solely to help you keep your heart healthy. --Joan Price
Book Description
Now in mass market, this bestseller (which has sold more than 450,000 copies) can reach even more of the 96 million Americans who need to lower their fat and cholesterol levels. In addition to the 200+ recipes, the book includes a clear discussion of cholesterol, easy guidelines, alternative cholesterol-lowering therapies, and specific meal plans.

Great Gift Idea.......2000-04-10
The recipes include foods that the whole family will enjoy - great for those trying to lower their cholestrol who also have kids. I gave it as a gift to a friend who just had a heart attack at age 40 (better than flowers, and I certainly wouldn't give chocolates) and he enjoyed the recipies so much I'm buying one for myself.
Product Description
In her 15 years as a veterinarian, Karen Hayes has seen many situations where the ultimate outcome could have been happier if horse owners were better prepared to handle the emergency and exercise a little damage control. She wrote this book to help you meet that need by offering clear and lucid information on what you should do to truly help your distressed horse.
Customer Reviews:
Most useful first aid for horses.......2003-03-28
What makes this book unique is the step by step walk-through of some typical horse emergency scenarios. And if you're around horses long enough sooner or later you'll be faced with a horse emergency--since horses usually live much further from their vets than city-dwelling pets, it's good if their handlers are well-prepared. It's a very readable format--I'd suggest reading it thoroughly ahead of time, get the recommended veterinary items together, and then get the book out again once or twice a year to keep fresh. Think of it as a course in first aid for your horse.
What a fantastic reference book.......1999-02-11
I have quite a few "Horse" books. Many of them are medical references but give very little practical advice. This is the one book that gives practical, concise information on what to do specifically in emergencies. It is thoughtful and easily read. It is the best book I have ever read for actually useful information concerning medical problems with horses. It walks a great line between making sure that you understand that vets are still required, but that if you are somewhere you can't get to a vet, what to do. The author has a wonderful sense of humor and a no-nonsense approach. I highly recommend it to any horse owner. Keep this book in your trailer at all times!!
THE BOOK OF EMERGANCY!.......1998-01-10
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR ANY HORSEMAN TO HAVE. THERE IS ALOT OF VALUABLE INFORMATION REGUARDING OTC AND PRESCRIPTION DUGS AND HOW YOU CAN CARRY THEM. ALSO THERE IS RULES AND REGULATIONS FOR HORSE SHOWS SUCH AS AHSA. THESE YOU NEED TO KNOW. WHAT DRUGS YOU CAN COMPETE ON AND WHICH ONES NOT. THIS BOOK ALSO STATES THE LAW ABOUT THE DRUGS YOU ARE CARRYING. DID YOU KNOW YOU COULD BE FINED$250,000.00 AND GO TO PRISON FOR 25 TO LIFE ON SOME DRUGS! THIS BOOK TELLS YOU ALL ABOUT IT. MOST VETS. DON'T TELL YOU THE LAW BUT SHE IS WONDERFUL. PLUSE SHE GIVES YOU STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR HORSES WHEN THERE IS NO VET AROUND. THIS COULD MEAN SAVING YOUR HORSE!!!! I ADVISE EVERYONE TO READ THIS BOOK AND EVEN BETTER BUY IT AND KEEP IT ON HAND. I DID AND IT WAS WORTH EVERY MINUTE I READ IT. NOW I AM GOING TO BUY IT FOR MYSELF TO HAVE ON HAND. I AM GOING TO BUY 2 COPIES. ONE FOR HOME AND ONE FOR THE TRUCK WHEN HAULING. AS I STATED EARLIER THERE IS MAJOR VALUEABLE INFO IN THIS BOOK THAT IS A MUST KNOW. THE LAW ABOUT MED. FOR ANIMALS!!!!!!!! MUST READ IMPORTANT INFORMATION!!!!!!!!

This books has many wonderful tips on growing herbs! It makes designing an herb garden a wonderful experience. A good companion book is Mary El-Baz's "The Essence of Herbal and Floral Teas."
Enchanting, Informative Book!.......2003-02-27
This books is all you'll need if you want to grow herbs. I love the great recipes for teas and herb sugars. The many detailed garden plans are the best part of the book and they're laid out simply with common herbs. I wish I'd gotten this pretty little tome years ago before I planted my first cutting of Mint!
A Beginning Gardener's Opinion.......2000-04-28
This is one of the most informative books I have read on the subject of herb gardening. I found the book difficult to put down. It includes extensive descriptions of individual herbs from the most ordinary to the hard-to-find. One of the most enjoyable aspects of the book are the recipes for herbal tea blends and corresponding health benefits, which are listed thoughout the book. Also included are garden plans, propagation methods, and harvesting tips. I highly recommend this book as a reference guide for the beginner or the seasoned gardener.

Book Description
Writings by American Indians from the early twentieth century or earlier are rare. Willie Ottogary's letters have the distinction of being firsthand reports of an Indian community's ongoing social life by a community member and leader. The Northwestern Shoshone residing at the Washakie colony in northern Utah descended from survivors of the Bear River Massacre. For over 20 years, local newspapers in Utah and southern Idaho regularly published letters from Ottogary.
