Book Description
"I haven't read historical fiction this good since I, CLAUDIUS by Robert Graves and PERSIAN BOY by Mary Renault--and this is a lot funnier."
DETROIT FREE PRESS
He's Rome's favorite son, and of late, Emperor Vespasian's favorite palace spy, charged with finding the culprits who are plotting his imperial demise. In the meanwhile, Marcus Didius Falco has unfinished business with one citizen, Helen Justina, a high-born beauty he has given his heart to. And at these wages, his heart is all he can afford to render unto her--which causes its own problems.
The second in Lindsey Davis' Ancient Rome detective series.
Customer Reviews:
Reading it was a Rare Pleasure.......2006-09-24
This is the second novel in the mystery series featuring Marcus Didius Falco, an informer and sleuth. A series of books that have become hugely popular, so much so that the author is now at the forefront of historical mystery writers. It was probably a stroke of genius on her part to have novels that are extremely well researched and contain all the elements that would be and should be found in Rome in AD70, but to have a lead character who has the vocabulary of a present day New York cop.
In this novel the hero Marcus Didius Falco has returned from the remote island of Britannia, a god forsaken place whose people are morose and surly and the weather, well the weather is best left to its own devices. Marcus has lost his heart to senator's daughter Helena but is not sure that the passion he feels is reciprocated. Why is that women he is not interested in, fall over themselves to get to him, but the one that he has lost his heart to, treats him with a cool disdain?
He has not long returned to the welcoming arms of Rome before a series of fatal accidents and things that go bump in the night convince Falco and the Emperor that there are traitors still conspiring and they must be brought to book. Falco is not happy, it seems he must leave his beloved Rome yet again, but the conspirators are serious about their plans and will not let anyone stand in their way. Will Falco ever return . . .
More Great Falco!.......2004-03-04
The second in the M. Didius Falco series, Shadows in Bronze, finds Marcus taking a "holiday" to Pompeii and the surrounded areas in search of a murderer who is also in search of him. With typical Falco bad luck following him every step of the way, he feels his way through the investigation and bumbles his relationship with Helena. The funny part of it is, you can't help but root for him while in the same breath you curse his pride and downright blindness. Davis' trademark lively narrative, witty dialog, and historical details makes for another great Falco adventure through Ancient Rome.
I'm re-reading the M. Didius Falco books as my husband reads them for the first time, and he is just as fond of Falco as I am. I can't recommend this series enough to those who like comedy, mystery and history. Just be sure to start with the first one in the series, though. These are not books to get out of order.
A good sequel to "Silver Pigs".......2003-07-31
More a continuation of the plot from the first Falco novel "Silver Pigs" than a brand new sotry, "Shadows in Bronze" takes Falco to the countryside of Roman Italy, including Pompeii, to follow more patrician scheming related to the conclusion of "Silver Pigs." The burgeoning relationship between the plebian Falco and senator's daughter Helena Justina is masterfully developed by Davis's subtle and evocative prose. The rich details of the ancient Roman setting provide a fascinating backdrop to the round characters with complex motivation and the gritty, sarcastic mood. Davis's skillful writing triumphs again.
Not My Usual Fare.......2002-06-13
I quite enjoyed Silver Pigs (the first book in the series), and expected to enjoy this one, but I was disappointed. Yes, I read the book, but it's not a mystery in the true sense of the word. The villain was apparent all the way through. The book is more like a Romantic history than a mystery, and that's not my cup of tea. I was recommended this author by Amazon as well, and thought I had a winner of a series after I read Silver Pigs, but I'm not so sure now. I find the reading a bit difficult since Falco is almost "too precious" for words. He appears to take nothing seriously (except his ladylove Helena, and even that is touch and go). I did enjoy the history, and the travel log of the countyrside in Ancient Rome. I will try one more in the series to see if the fun of Silver Pigs is recaptured.
Must be a page turner,.......2002-02-24
'cause I turned all the pages and read most of the words on them, but _Shadows in Bronze_ is a poor whodunit, because the reader knows before that befope the halfway mark and the whys soon thereafter.
Amazon recommended this book to me because I have exhausted all the Stephen Saylor Roma Sub Rosa series and Michael Dibdin's modern Italian detective novels. The action scenes in Saylor's recent books are far superior to Davis's and both Saylor and Dibdin draw more interesting character than Davis.
Davis tosses in many characters -- it takes two pages to list the cast of characters. "Informer" Didius Falco is very similar to 20th-century detectives, badly bad and badly used by those who hire him. His primary employer is the new Emperor Vespasian, who is an interesting character (as is Falco) who speaks freely to his lowborn employee. Falco's nephew Larius has some charm, too, but I don't buy the patrician lady Helena Justina and her bumpy romance with Didius Falco.
There are interesting details about life across Italy in AD 71, and the book provides some entertainment -- but not enough for detective fiction.

Book Description
This book is the outcome of a prolonged period of discovery and research into the Bronze Age rock carvings of Bohuslän (Sweden) and Ostfold (Norway). Over 100 of the most complex and varied sites, containing many thousands of images, are presented in new plans and photographs. The variety and precision of the methods of recording have revealed hitherto unknown carvings and new details on many of the sites, including some of the best-known sites in all of Sweden and Norway. The images, of boats, humans, wheeled vehicles, wild and domesticated animals, ards, weapons and other symbols demonstrate great variability. A structural analysis permits some identification of particular artists, whilst the identification of dated styles of boat images allows some element of specific chronology to be presented. Over 800 rock carving sites, and their contemporary monuments, are mapped and described in terms of the evolving landscapes of the period 1500 - 300 BC. The current excavation programmes at the base of sites are outlined as well as the likely relationship between rock carvings and adjacent wetlands. The area explored in the book includes the World Heritage region in western Sweden and the whole territory of rock carvings examined forms one of Europe's greatest prehistoric cultural treasures.

Book Description
As a scholar of medieval languages and literature, J.R.R. Tolkien brought to his fiction an intense interest in myth and legend. When he died in 1973, he left behind a vast body of unpublished material related to his fictive mythology. Now edited and published as The History of Middle-earth by his son and literary executor, Christopher Tolkien, these 12 volumes provide a record of the growth of J.R.R. Tolkien's mythology from its beginnings in 1917 to the time of his death more than 50 years later. The material in these volumes offers an unparalleled insight into Tolkien's process of myth-making and is a guide to the world of his literary works. This book is the first comprehensive critical examination of Christopher Tolkien's compilation of his father's Middle-earth legends. An opening essay by Rayner Unwin, Tolkien's publisher for many years, surveys the publication history of the collection. The essays that follow, each written by an expert contributor, explore a wide range of topics related to The History of Middle-earth. Included are discussions of Tolkien's languages, the evolution of his vision over time, the shifting importance of central characters, and the effect of his mythology on The Lord of the Rings. By exploring this mythological compendium, the volume sheds further light on the entire body of J.R.R. Tolkien's works and is a valuable resource for all readers interested in his writings.
Customer Reviews:
excellent.......2004-11-25
The price is pretty steep for this text, and that will scare plenty of people away from buying it from a major book distributor. Still, that should not prevent them from checking it out at their local library. The contributions from various scholars are great, particularly, for me, the chapter, "Gandalf and Odin." If I can ever use it in a class, I will. Good stuff, I say.
Not as good as Visualizing Middle-earth.......2002-07-13
These essays leave one wanting something more. If you want to learn more about Middle-earth, you want to read a book ABOUT Middle-earth. Not literary criticism where people talk about their parents. Self-analysis may be the bread and butter of criticism, but it doesn't tell you anything interesting. All the history here is rehashed old stuff. Who cares?
You get essays like "The development of Tolkien's legendarium, some threads in the tapestry of Middle-earth." Please let us come up for air. This is the kind of stuff college professors write so they can get tenure. It's more like Cliff's Notes for The History of Middle-earth. Chris Tolkien has already told us all this.
And who really wants to know something like Luthany became Luthien and then Leithien. This book isn't about Middle-earth. It's about how to cure insomnia. You'll learn as much about Tolkien's dwarfs from this book as you will from a can of tomatoes. Visualizing Middle-earth by Michael Martinez is a much better book. Martinez understands that Tolkien's readers want to know more about the world itself. They don't care who held hands in the park on December 16.
Hey if people like this stuff, more power to em. But I want more books on Middle-earth. This book ain't one of them.
Some *REAL* scholarship here!.......2001-10-17
Good Tolkien criticism is sadly rare. Given the amount of fan fluff that's out there, this collection of 14 essays, edited by well-established Tolkien scholars Verlyn Flieger and Carl Hostetter, comes as welcome relief. The essays, all of which are based to varying degrees on the mammoth 12-volume _History of Middle-Earth_ (hereafter abbreviated as HoME) that was recently completed by Christopher Tolkien are divided up into three main sections. Section 1 deals directly with the contents of HoME and what it tells us about Tolkien's creative processes, the history of his ideas and his constantly niggling and tweaking of them. Mostly, these essays help 'make sense' out of the complex assemblage of texts, fragments, etc., that make up HoME. One essay also considers the literary value of HoME, raising the thorny question of whether it's useful only as a scholarly tool or whether there is some actual literary merit to the drafts and fragments contained within. Section 2 is rather short and has three essays on Tolkien's invented languages, focussing on how HomE contributes to our understanding of the development of those languages. The last section deals with more conventionally literary questions, specifically examining how the material in HoME sheds light on questions about plot, influences, sources, structure, etc. A particularly insightful essay here is Paul Thomas's essay on Tolkien's narrative voices in the The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, and the various drafts thereof-- noting specifically how (and speculating on why) Tolkien changed the nature of the narrative voice between drafts and final product. A few essays in this latter group revisit topics that have already been discussed near-exhaustively (e.g. the influence of Germanic mythologies on Tolkien), but the scholarship is sound and rigorous all the way through. Highly recommended to Tolkien scholars and to Tolkien fans who want an example of what *real* scholarship (as opposed to fannish pseudo-scholarship a la Michael Martinez) looks like.
A "must" for all Tolkien fans and scholars!.......2001-01-23
These essays are rich in complexity and detail and are recommended for college-level students of Tolkien's writings: they discuss the history of his Middle-Earth world, from the concept of Elvish language and the structure of Elvish verse to Tolkien's lyric poetry. An excellent set of technical discussions on the inviting world of Tolkien.
Bathe in the light of the Undying Lands.......2000-05-18
This book presents an excellent interpretation of the works of J.R.R. Tolkein. It adds an interesting prespective on his stories, as well as his life. This is a must have for any true Tolien fan! Peace.

Everything You Need to Know to Have a Fearful Twin Pregnancy!.......2007-10-04
The title of this book is very misleading. Instead of telling readers how to have a healthy pregnancy, the author lists major complications one after another. There were way too many statistics and percentages and I felt like I was reading the same information over and over. This book was very scary to read and offered no reassurance that a multiple pregnancy would end happily. I would definitely not recommend this book to any pregnant women.
Great but lacking one thing.......2007-08-31
This book was great -- I read it time and again -- but it lacked more in-depth information about what to expect for each trimester. The information about your pregnancy during given periods of time was very, very brief.
Very Helpful and Informative Book!.......2007-08-09
Dr. Leiter offers great professional and personal insights into twin pregnancy. Her medical information is just enough and easy to comprehend for the curious layperson. Though you'll learn what can go wrong, she keeps the focus on the positive and offers encouraging examples from patients and her own experience. This book is great to read with Twinspiration, which focuses more on what happens after you bring them home from the hospital.
Best book for twin mother's to be.......2007-05-29
I thought this book was highly informational and I found all of the information to be not only true but helpful. I have a long list of questions for my doctor for my next visit. She gives guidelines and even suggest different test that your doctor may administer to maintain a healthy pregnancy. I hope it helps me to maintain my twins healthy and happy, thanks
Informative, but also a little scary.......2007-03-15
I found this book to be very informative, however, at one point my husband told me to stop reading it because it was making me upset. It really put alot of fear into me and I found myself constatly worring about all of the things that could happen. It would have been nice if it wasnt so over medicalized. She would use alot of "doctor talk" and I wished she would have written on a more personal level, since she is a mother of twins and has expierenced this all herself. It did give alot of useful information and I dont regret buying it

Wild Yet Down to Earth!.......2006-07-06
In the age of pre-packaged, heat and serve, mealtimes often lack nourishment; that is, food that satisfies both body and spirit. But fortunately there's a remedy: "Going Wild in the Kitchen." This cookbook not only offers 150+ healthy, palate-pleasing vegetarian recipes, but also inspires and guides readers toward greater creativity in the kitchen.
There is much to like about Going Wild in the Kitchen, not least of which are the many glossaries, charts, and tables that provide all the information one will need in order to prepare the delicious and exciting vegetarian recipes contained in the book - and perhaps a few of your own culinary creations! One particularly handy table details cooking instructions for over eighteen different varieties of grains, including a few "ancient grains," several of which I've never heard of before. And then, of course, there are the recipes! Quinoa with Cauliflower and Feta, and Italian Lentil Stew with Creamy Grano are just two favorites. What's grano, you ask? No worries, it's all in the book!
"Going Wild in the Kitchen" is beautifully illustrated, however one will not find it includes any glossy photographs, yet surprisingly they are not missed. The author, who is an expert cooking instructor as well as a gourmet organic caterer, awakens the imagination by sharing her knowledge, experience, and passion in this superbly substantive vegetarian cookbook. Indeed, "Going Wild in the Kitchen" is bound to present more than a few welcome surprises for even the experienced chef.
In short, I love this cookbook!
Really tasty!.......2006-01-30
My kids demanded I make the peanut butter teff cookies two days in a row. Blueberry cornbread was also delicious. No refined sugar, eggs or milk and many grain alternatives. Quite impressed.
Go wild!.......2005-10-31
This book truly helps the creative cook go wild and have fun in the kitchen. I've tried several recipes and each one came out perfectly, and was a big hit. but the beauty of these recipes is that you don't have to stick to a recipe exactly for it to turn out great. In fact, the author, Leslie Cerier, includes lots of variations and encourages the cook to experiment and play.
I like the fact that the desserts are vegan and that she uses lots of berries, herbs, and unusual whole grains in a number of dishes. The layout is easy on the eye and graphics are fun. This will be a kitchen favorite of anyone who loves healthy, delicious foods, whether vegetarian or not. Buy it, you won't be sorry!
Wow!.......2005-09-16
This book gives great ideas about how to improvise in the kitchen as well as incredible recipes if you are a bit more shy about experimenting. For anyone learning how to cook healthy, nutritious foods that taste great this is the book.
Don't be shy if you aren't vegetarian it still has fabulous ideas for creating healthy meals and expanding your kitchen tool kit.
Great for food allergy sufferers as it has lots of grain variations available too.

Third in the Series.......1996-09-08
Matchbox Toys in the Eighties demonstrated the most
aggressive marketing tactics ever for these long-time toy
favorites. Under the auspices of Universal Holding
Company of Hong Kong, Matchbox expanded the number of
variations, and issued many collector specialty issues to
promote the adult collectibles side of the market.
This third book in the four-book series is an exhaustive
study of "The World's Favorite Collectible Toys." Separate
photo, variation, and values sections are a compromise that
is easily tolerated by most serious collectors.

Wonderful reference for flower lovers..........2007-08-30
What a great reference book for all who love flowers. As a professional Florist, Event & Party planner in Seattle, WA, we use this book on a daily basis for customers asking quesion of flowers.
A must have...

She love it........2007-05-30
This little but informative book was a hit for my mom-in-law. She thought she knew all about flowers, but no. She was amazed at all the facts in this book. A real nice present for flower lovers.!!
100 Flowers book.......2007-04-02
I was a little dissapointed with this book. It was a lot smaller in size than I was expecting, and the illustrations are just black and white outlines, not color photos of each flower like I was expecting. They should call it "How 100 flowers got their names" instead.
Perfect gift.......2006-12-30
100 Flowers is more of a small coffee table book than a garden guide. It's sweet and interesting. It would be a perfect gift for mother's day, the lady who babysits the cat, your nicest gay neighbor. I would be interested in other things the author has done or seeing her on Martha.
Wonderful, charming book.......2006-04-26
This is a wonderful, charming book. Each section provides an interesting anecdotal essay about the flower it covers. However, do not expect completeness (of course, there are many more than 100 flowers out there, and more than could be said about each than is possible in a page or two).
Also, don't look for consistent information about flower naming or morphology. Rather, these are very personal essays on each flower. The essays usually include some historical information that has to do with how the flower was named. At times, this format feel forced--I would have liked the author to be able to paint with a broader brush, as I sense she wanted to. And I also think that of the 100 flowers there are a few she doesn't really like that much. (Well, me too!).
These minor objections to the form of the book aside, it's really incredibly sweet, and very educational. 5 Stars plus.

excellent sewing instructions.......2007-02-08
The sewing instructions are so clearly presented that one with minimal sewing experience should achieve excellent results. The designs presented are fairly basic -- that's why I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 -- but the book provides plenty of inspiration for most purposes. For me, this one is a "keeper" as a reference book.

Inadequate and fraught with errors.......2000-11-17
As an old QuarkXPress user looking for an instructional aid, I was quite disappointed in this book: the exercises are painful and unnecessarily convoluted. The topics are not organized logically. Support files do not display correctly on Windows machines (Mac EPSs lacking previews). But worse than that, this book is full of errors. Frequently, the wrong keyboard commands are given, instructions are omitted or incomplete. Some information is false: "Pages exported as EPS are raster -- not vector..." This is incorrect. Try "Teach Yourself QuarkXPress in 14 Days" by Kate Binder instead.
A great way to learn Quark!.......2000-07-01
The book in question is the best way I could find to learn how to use QuarkXPress 4.x. Very thorough, it teaches new and intermediate users how to best use the tools in the software, to build a nice design. By reading the book and doing the exercises - with the files on the CD ([not] included) - readers/users should come out of it ready to go! I did... :-)
Product Description
Christina, First Wife of Solomon, King of the Zulus, and one of millions of twentieth century women living under polygamy, was the first and only Zulu to demand and receive a divorce from a husband with approximately sixty-five wives. Her story was personally related to Mrs. Reyher, well-known author and journalist, who made two trips to Zululand for a total of more than a year's stay in that country. It is a human document of compelling interest

Book Description
In 1934, American writer Rebecca Hourwich Reyher recorded the remarkable life story of Christina Sibiya, the first of sixty-five wives of the uncrowned king of the Zulus. What Reyher faithfully recorded - and then crafted into a moving narrative - is the riveting story of a South African woman who entered life among the Zulu royal family and then, after enduring psychic and physical abuse, found the courage to leave.
In 1915, fifteen-year-old Christina Sibiya leaves teaching at a mission school to become the first wife of Solomon ka Dinuzulu. While at the royal household, Sibiya successfully adjusts to the expectations of her new position: finding her place among the other wives, and negotiating Zulu and Christian tradition. The royal headquarters, however, becomes increasingly plagued by diviseness, dissolution, and ill health. After a series of hardships, climaxing in a beating by Solomon, Sibiya, at the age of twenty-eight, escapes to Durban. Although pursued by Solomon's representative, Sibiya successfully resists Solomon's authority by testifying first in a European magistrate's court and then at the royal headquarters that her marriage was invalid. First published in 1948, Zulu Woman is placed in new context by an introduction and afterword which consider the book's relationship to other African literature and oral history, attend to questions of power and authorship, and draw upon newly available archival materials.
Customer Reviews:
Sublime.......2000-10-27
In some ways, the less said the better. Too many words will take away the magic. Breaking the book down, analyzing it, looking at separate components will only take away the overall magical feeling. This is an amazing story, but also, beautiful prose. The descriptions are sublime and the pure sweet joy of reading the words is magical. One wouldn't expect that in an adventure book about a white missionary marrying a Zulu Chief, where we expect most of the value to be in the amazing events that are relayed. So, what a surprise to get an exciting, true story also exquisitely told. And with a feminist focus. Who could ask for more in one book?
