Many different takes.......2005-01-11
A nice assortment of stories based on Holmes' "missing years". I prefer this anothology to Michael Kurland's Moriarty novels since Holmes takes center stage in all but Richard Lupoff's story, which is from a previous anthology. Kurland's take on what really happened at Reichenbach is interesting, and explains several vague references in his novels. The first nine stories are quite good, taking Holmes all over the world. The only thing that keeps me from giving this a five stars is Michael Collins' tale - Doyle's Holmes never made political statements and authors shouldn't use him to promote their beliefs.
Mediocre Sherlock Holmes Stories.......2004-12-29
I find that I just have a hard time enjoying Sherlock Holmes pastiches. There are a few collections out there in which I have enjoyed some of the stories and not others. This collection is mediocre at best and frankly just does not quite fit with or come anywhere close to living up to the original.
This collection of stories ostensibly covers the years between Sherlock Holmes' presumed death at Reichenbach Falls in his death struggle with his arch enemy Professor Moriarity to his reappearance a few years later. The stories are connected by an underlying theme - that Holmes is working for his brother Mycroft under the pseudonym Mr. Sigerson, not as a spy exactly, but collecting intelligence that may be useful to the British government. The tales take us far and wide across the world from Tibet, Alaska, San Francisco, Thailand, etc. And of course Holmes runs into a number of unlikely crimes that he solves along the way.
But the bottom line is, these stories are mediocre at best and I would not recommend this book.
Excellent Holmes collection.......2004-11-06
Michael Kurland must be the reincarnation of Dr. John Watson with his powerful exciting Sherlock Holmes chronicles with the Moriarty twist. This time around he edits a terrific anthology from a who's who including many contributors who have written Baker St. stories. This time Mr. Kurland has his thirty-five writers (including himself) concentrate on the lost years, 1891 - 1894 when Holmes was thought dead having fallen over the edge of Reichenbach Falls while fighting with Moriarty.
Each tale is terrific so that more than just the Baker Street Irregulars will appreciate this compilation. Surprisingly some of the stories have Holmes in a back seat as others take the lead or explain away what really occurred at the Falls. Mr. Kurland, whose Moriarty tales are some of the best around, insures top quality that will have fans of the great detective taking the plunge.

It hasn't been clinically proven that Perricone skin products work. My mom (age 46) tried them anyway, and they didn't work.
His advice to stay away from grains (and whatever comes from them, of course) is great, but not new. Yes, farm-raised salmon is screwed up, eat the wild one, but again, I knew that already.
And I disagree with his complicated "system" of taking supplements. If you just eat normal food, like vegetables and fruit, NOT grains and soda, you won't need supplements. The only supplement you need is fish oil, since farm-raised animals that we eat lack necessary fatty acids.

I devoured Dr. Perricone's Wrinkle Cure book, so I was ecstatic about his latest book, The Perricone Prescription. His advice is so logical and easy to follow it was no wonder I shed weight and felt great, not to mention looking younger, too! His menu plan and anti-aging research is not to miss! The journal was such a helpful tool to follow my progress. That is why I have previously given up on other diet plans. This was easy to follow and successful, too! Thanks Dr. Perricone!

The Perricone Prescription Journal is the best tool I have ever used for a nutritional program and it has become as essential to my day as my home keys!! Not only can I follow a daily menu at a glance, but I can keep track of my progress as far as skin and body condition: (my weight, of course but important details too like my pore size and my stress level) as well as jot down my impressions and my feelings every day! Plus I love the fact that the book is light weight and spiral-bound. Extremely handy, full of zen-like sensible advice, I recommend it to anyone with a will to win the anti-aging battle!

Once I started writing in the Journal the effects were amazing. The daily reports motivated me to stay on the program and the results, noticable with every passing day have been wonderful. Sugarfree New Orleans has taught me a whole new way to cook! Healthy recipes without sugar are right in line with our new diet! I feel like I have learned the secrets of great New Orleans chefs since we now enjoy New Orleans style cooking at home. The information about the glycemic index is easy to understand and has been very helpful. Recipes are easy to follow. The book even has New Orleans food terms explained. But the best thing about the book is the recipes!! Sweet potato chips is one of my family's favorites. I am cooking more often and enjoying the outcome thanks to this book.

This book is one that cat lovers will adore, almost to the extent to which they exalt their cats. The pictures are superb and the captions truly capture the role of cats in the world. My favorite caption is "In ancient times, cats were worshipped as gods; they have never forgotten this." This totally sums up the mystique and lure of cats. They are loving one minute and aloof from the world the next. When they want attention, they are as persistent as ice in the arctic but if you call them, they might come to you, but only if they find it convenient. This is summed up in the caption, "If cats could talk, they wouldn't." This is a truly enjoyable book.

Not a field guide but a personality guide.......2007-04-20
In this book Tom isn't really trying to make a field guide to identify edible/medicinal plants. He is trying to get you to enjoy those plants, not just use them. Each plant that he talks about has a story that goes along with it. Whether it is the first time he took a sip of catnip tea or an adventure down the river on a raft made from sassafras trees that had been cut down. I have found this book extremely helpful in enjoying and getting to know the types of plants described. Which i find in turn helps me a lot with identifying them from look a likes and really appreciating what i do find to eat.
Not a field guide but great stories.......2007-01-25
I love Tom Brown, and his stories about plants are an important part of how I practice herbal medicine. But this book would have been much much better if it had illustrations or at least drawings. As a result, I leave the book at home and read it for enjoyment, cross-referencing it with a field guide if need be.
Great for the info it has, but not an identification and classification book.......2006-02-18
This book is written from the standpoint of someone who needs to use plants either for survival or bush medicine. It is not the best or most accurate filed guide for identifying or classifying plants. I found it best to use this book in conjunction with an Audubon field guide. The Audubon filed guide will give you a picture and a better description of the plant that you are looking for, Tom Brown's book tells you what to do with the plant when you find it.
Tom browns book is the more important part of this equation, what good is knowing what a plant looks like without knowing what it is used for? So, I recommend using a different field guide for finding a certain plant, and then using Tom Brown's guide and practice making the medicinal applications and teas that he has. This book was not designed to take the place of a standard photographic field guide. It is designed to be used first in conjunction with a standard field guide until you know the plant and can identify it, then the illustrations and such are only to jog your memory in the field if you are looking for a certain remedy plant but its been a while since you messed with it.

Tom Brown Jr's stories about his experiences with Stalking Wolf and other ancients will keep you entertained while you learn about the divers benefits of plants. If Tom ever decides write part two, I will be in line for a second helping.

Book Description
German typographer Paul Renner is best known as the designer of the typeface Futura, which stands as a landmark of modern graphic design. This title is the first study in any language of Renner's typographic career; it details his life and work to reveal the breadth of his accomplishment and influence.
Renner was a central figure in the German artistic movements of the 1920s and 1930s, becoming an early and prominent member of the Deutscher Werkbund while creating his first book designs for various Munich-based publishers. As the author of numerous texts such as Typografie als Kunst (Typography as Art) and Die Kunst der Typographie (The Art of Typography) he created a new set of guidelines for balanced book design. Renner taught with Jan Tschichold in the 1930s and was a key participant in the heated ideological and artistic debates of that time. Arrested and dismissed from his post by the Nazis, he eventually emerged as a voice of experience and reason in the postwar years. Throughout this tumultuous period he produced a body of work of the highest distinction.

This is a rare achievement as it gives interesting insights into both the aesthetic achievement of a designer, and the culture milieu in which he lived and reacted to. As this same background--the German speaking world from about 1890 to WWII--was very fertile creatively in many fields, the book is of interest far beyond Renner himself.

Interesting book -- Renner, along with Herbert Bayer and others of his era, created typography and design that still looks modern decades later.
