Almost as good as Amelia Peabody.......2004-03-22

I am so glad that I went back to read this earlier Elizabeth Peters series. It is quite different in many aspects to the Peabody series but still features a strong central female character, some romance thrown into the mystery, and many red herrings and rather arcane information.

In this third entry of the series, Vicky Bliss receives an anonymous plane ticket and hotel reservation to Stockholm. She knows that the invite is from Sir John Smythe, introduced in the last book and her somewhat love interest. She goes to Stockholm, discovers what the mystery involves, is led to an island in the north of Sweden to follow up on some leads and most of the action takes place there. The mystery is interesting, the clues are available to the reader, there are plenty of red herrings to make it fun, and the ending is very satisfactory.

I guess there are only a couple of more in this series. I wonder if Ms. Peters will ever write any more or will stick with just the Peabody books?

The Continuing Adventures of Vicky.......2004-02-16

Vicky Bliss, an art historian now working at a Munich museum, is a bit frustrated with the dull, rainy late spring Munich weather. Life is a bit boring after some of her recent adventures but that changes when she opens a package containing a one-way ticket (coach) to Sweden, a two word Latin message and a single red rose. This has to be the work of the mysterious John Smythe so naturally Vicky is soon on her way to Stockholm. Others seem to be interested in her travel plans as well and Vicky quickly finds herself again involved in international intrigues of amazing proportions.

As with the rest of this series there are complicated intrigues, amazing conicidences, exciting chases and a cliff hanging ending all linked by Vicky wry observations on life and love.

I loved this Vicky Bliss Mystery and it is my second favorite of them all. Max,the boss, Leaf,the villian, and Sir John Smythe, the lover, all set the scene for this witty and interesting mystery. This story takes place in Sweden, where Vicky gets involved in a plot to dig up a field of tresure. Vicky meets vital characters in this story and it is not one to overlook.

Vicky Bliss who works for the National Museum in Munich had enough of the rainy spring in Bavaria that May and was just hoping to take an early vacation to some warm and sunny place when the parcel arrived. It contained a crimson rose and an airline ticket to Stockholm. There was no note, only the words "WIELANDIA FABRICA" printed on a card. The package had no return address, but had been mailed from Sweden. Vicky instantly knew it had been sent by Sir John Smythe, her lover, and a wanted art thief who she knew she should never trust because John had let her down more than a few times. Vicky had not seen or heard from him in over a year, but she decided to use the ticket and find out what kind of a caper that John was currently involved with. Her suspicions were that he was seeking a Viking treasure.

SILHOUETTE IN SCARLET is the third book in the Vicky Bliss Mystery series and another enjoyable story by Elizabeth Peters.

The book was delivered to me within 5 days and was in excellent condition when I received it.
The book is excellent. It provides some great ideas for hockey fitness. The only draw-back is that a good portion of the book deals with on ice fitness exercises and unless you're a professional hockey player, it is very difficult to have a clean sheet of ice to yourself to work on conditioning. However, there is enough to keep you busy.

This is the book that has elevated the hockey game of a 33 year old goaltender. I've been using it for myself and for the midget hockey team I coach. It definitely gives the team the edge when the the drills are executed on a regular schedule during the season and off season. This is required reading for my youth team and it has not failed.

This book is fantastic. The book is very complete, from beginning to end on the training and conditioning aspect. Not only did it include the fitness portion, but also nutrition, which I was surprised to see.

My only complaint is that each and every exersize should have photos. Most do, but not all of them. There are some exersizes that are not 100% clear on the proper technique.

Other than that it's great.

A Myriad of Exercises.......2002-07-11

Peter Twist says it right in the beginning, there is nothing quite like hockey. That makes it really tough to get in shape to play. Even if you're already in great shape, you're game could improve dramatically if you got into hockey shape. That is exactly what Twist tries to do.

The book is organized in such a way that the later chapters build upon the previous chapters. He begins by talking about energy and how we burn fuels different ways when playing hockey. Then he goes into stretching and strength training. If you have ever spent any time around a gym, you'll already know how to perform these movements. The payoff for this book is the plyometric. These are techniques used to help improve your agility and explosive movements. Let's face it, the team that can consistently get to the puck first usually wins. These exercises will provide you with a quick jump giving you an extra step over your opponent and the puck.

Twist writes simply, and his instructions are easy to follow. He uses photos generously when trying to explain complex movements. Both on-ice and off-ice exercises are provided so you don't have to be at the rink or have precious ice time to get into shape.

Great Classics.......2006-12-18

Have tried a number of the recipes from this book and some have become family favorites. Many of the recipes are great for dieters or carb watchers-just use the sugar-free jellos and puddings in the recipes instead of the sugared ones. You will get a lot of use out of this book.

Very good stuff.Written in very language easy to connect.I had almost decided to give up showing dogs,and got this book.In the next month I had three of my terriers were on board.Yet I am sure I would not have been hurt as much as before the book even if they had not won.

Recently, a friend mentioned he was thinking about breeding puppies. Luckily, I was already reading this book. After mentioning the schedules, money, paperwork, heartbreak, and blood, sweat, and tears that goes into dog breeding, he said "never mind"

Not only is Dog Eat Dog a brilliant expose on dog breeding, it focuses on the world of show dogs, a complicated place in which the slightest bump on a dogs shoulder can make the difference between winning and loosing, and where wirehair dogs have to be groomed by having individual hairs pulled out.

Though many breeds and breeders are mentioned, the main focus is on Mimi Einstein and her All Star Kennels, which breeds and shows Bull Mastiffs, massive, loving guard dogs. Many of the stories are touching, some will make you cheer outloud and one made my eyes water.

It's fast moving, well paced, and though a real tale it has a happy ending.

If you're thinking about getting a pure bred dog, showing a dog, or breeding for profit, please read this book first!

'Dog Eat Dog' is the 'Orchid Thief' of the dog show world, but the obsession in this case is with Bullmastiffs, not orchids. Jane and Michael Stern have written an interesting, sweet, and sometimes sad book about the 'dog eat dog' competition in the American dog show ring. The sadness comes in when the authors describe the problems that we humans have wrought upon our best friends, by breeding for a particular and possibly arbitrary trait (size or hairlessness) and ignoring the consequences (hip dysplasia, deafness, birthing problems).

The authors suffered from the purebred dog syndrome themselves: "Some couples dream of a house, others of a baby; we could think of nothing more enriching to our tender relationship than the companionship of a drooling, flatulent Bulldog."

Richard, the Bulldog was an utter failure in the showring but if he was the genesis of "Dog Eat Dog", then he was a very successful Bulldog, indeed. Please read this book. It is a droll, ingratiating, doggy slice of Americana.

Not as thorough as I expected.......2005-10-13

I was impressed with Dirr's Manuel of Woody Landscape book and really looked forward to this one. I live in Zone 8/B in south Georgia and so many plants labeled to grow in this area do not. Since Dirr is from Georgia I thought this book would be just what the doctor ordered. Well, not exactly.
I loved having the color photos but was not impressed with the number of plants he excluded or included for that matter. I was hoping for the same format as his previous book, listing all the qualities and pros and cons. What I got was some pics with a paragraph or two (some without pictures at all) describing a few things about it. Some of the plants listed are common, even weedy. My main beef is that it is sometimes hard to tell exactly where they should grow because of the way it is written. Example: Zones (8)9 to 10. New Zealand,Australia, Tazmania. I assume the countries are where the plant originated but I can't tell if it grow in Zone 8 or not. There are also problems when he describes a plant that grows on the west coast. Example:Zones 6 to 8, 9 to 10 on the west coast. Does this mean 6 to 8 anywhere and also in 9 and 10 on the west coast or all the zones on the west coast only? I think my biggest problem occured in thinking since he was from Georgia he would be talking about the warm, humid climate in the southeast. It seems like a majority of the plants are for the Pacific Coast region. Like I said, my mistake. I got some good ideas but having decided on a holly that I want, have not been able to find it anywhere, even online. I am not sorry I spent the money but if I had had an actual copy in hand, say at the library or in Barnes and Noble, I would have just copied down the names of what interested me and jumped on the computer at home.

A necessity for Southeastern US gardners.......2004-11-11

In this book, our leading expert on woody plants gives brief descriptions and excellent photos of many of those suited for warm climates. As noted by another reviewer, the selection is more complete for the humid Southeast (of the U.S.) than it is for California and other Mediterranean climates. However, I expect that all warm-climate gardeners will find much of value.

It is important to note that this book complements Dirr's two other major efforts on woody plants: his Manual of Woody Landscape Plants and a photographic volume (similar to this one) called Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs. The Manual provides more detailed taxonomic and cultural information (including info on propagation), but has line drawings of foliage only. The two photographic books cover most woody plants suited to the U.S. There is no overlap between the photographic books, which is why redbud and dogwood aren't found in this volume, as noted by a previous reviewer. They are hardy, and they are in Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs.

This book is invaluable for seeing what mature specimens of these plants will look like and for Dirr's always interesting comments on suitable uses and culture. Highly recommended.

Dirrs trees and shrubs for warm climates.......2003-02-18

I don't know what the above reviewer expected...by way of clarification; bamboos are grasses, and agapanthus are herbaceous perennials NOT shrubs or trees. If you are expecting to find a comprehensive acount of all warm climate plants this is not the book for you (as the title clearly states)

If you are someone who is looking for a good primary survey of trees and shrubs for this zone this is an extremely useful book. Professional and non-professional alike. It may not have every esoteric specie but it will serve as a solid foundation of what performs best.

Dirrýs Trees and Shrubs for Warm Climates.......2002-10-12

Well, the name pretty much says it all for this book. There are some wonderful photographs throughout the book with small descriptions beside each photo. As a reference book, this is great but I would not recommend it if you are looking for a good book to read on those long winter evenings.

Another drawback is that many trees that will thrive in warmer climates are not listed. It seems to list the more commonly known ones instead of the ones that very little information is available on.

I do feel that this book will be a great help to those who either know or suspect which plant they have and want to make a positive identification. The photos are definitely the best part of this particular book.

Not good for Southern California.......2002-06-05

I am still waiting for a reference book like this for Southern California. This book largely ignores us. Virtually nothing on Eucalyptus. Half our palms aren't there. NO bamboo at all. No Agapanthus even. Lots of holes. Suprising that there is still only Gordon Courtwright's books.

Misleading at best and in dire need of a new titled.......2007-08-23

This should be titled, How to Make Money Producing Free Junk Magazines. Most of the folks I know in the publishing industry would love to see a down to basics intro to publishing, ie, the printing lingo, developing relationships with authors, editing tips, detailed layout advice, etc. This book is about producing, not publishing. Moving units of advertising, not creating something worthwhile to read or engage the public. This is a get-rich-quick book that belongs in the business section and has not place near publishing/literature reference.

This book has a lot of great information in it and will be useful for anyone who wants to start publishing.

HOWEVER, this book is by far the most poorly edited book I have ever read. Punctuation mistakes ABOUND and it is obvious that standards were not very high for publication of this book.

Buy it for the education and look at it as what NOT to do when publishing a book or magazine.

Bang for your Buck.......2006-03-02

Of the many books that I have purchased on self-publishing, this is one of the better ones. Even though I myself was mostly interested in book publishing rather than mangazines or guidebooks, this book still served me well. It gave a lot of useful tips and pointers as well as information I never thought about. I checked the book out of the library initially, but I want my own copy.

This book gives you step by step details on how to enter the publishing field on a tight budget. It gives you an abundance of resources. Some of those include:

* Starting out with little cash (and how he did it)
* Trade secrets necessary to pick winning publications
* How to hire the people you need (at a price you can afford)
* How to save money on printing
* Reproducible Business Forms

This is a great book to include in your self-publishing library. It does cover alot of areas, but I don't usually complain when someone gives me more bang for my buck.

My writing has become more focused since reading Ms. Parker's book. It is a detailed work on writing a business plan and planning a business. It guides the reader into his/her specialty and since my writing lacked focused, this book is on point.

This book is a very good overview of the business of writing from home. Just don't expect to see much indepth information here.

A good book for those just starting out and looking for information on the generalities of home-based work as well as some marketing ideas for the writing business specifically.

If your brand new to this area then I highly recommend this book. If you already have a home-based business or know most of the information needed for starting one up then I suggest other more specific books for your writing business.

One of the best books I have read on freelance writing. Well written and packed full of information! Very helpful, I wish I would have bought this before leaving my full time job to start my own business. So many things that I wish I would have had set up before hand. I am implementing much of it now. I have bought several books regarding running a design business from home, I recommend this one over all the others!

Very Thorough Is Lacking in Only One Area.......2005-09-04

As the previous reviewers have written, this book covers day-to-day information you need to run a DTP (or graphic design) business.

Have you thought about creating a policies & guidelines sheet for your customers? If you don't, you'll be sorry after a client blames you because they didn't proofread their job before it went to the printer. If you had the P&G to review with them, you would be able to bring it up BEFORE it becomes a crisis.

This book is loaded with examples like this; not just the ancedotes, but the forms that help your business run smoothly. As I mentioned, this book was lacking in only one area--financial recordkeeping was a mere two pages in this book. That subject could be a 200 page book in and of itself. Kursmark is so clever at writing about this subject in a friendly and conversational manner, I found myself disappointed not to get her help on recordkeeping.

That said, this book is highly recommended based on what it does cover, and I'm off to find a book to explain how to track expenses and the like.

I have only had time to read about 15 pages of this book, but so far it is fantastic! When I read more pages I will rate again, but like I said, this book is great. From what I have read so far, I would highly recommend this book. The author is very straightforward and her writing style is wonderful - easy to understand and down to earth.

As a pro DTP & graphic artist, I didn't think there would be much more to learn to eliminate my employer and sell the services I did already directly to customers. In fact, thinking I was an expert of graphic design & all of the software made me mistakenly believe I was ready to pass out biz cards and start selling my services and wondered how this book could possibly be 200 pages for something so simple. I was quite wrong, however, and I'm so glad I read this book and got aware of how much more successful I could be by following the author's plan. There is a lot of lessons learned the hard way the author shared which would save anyone a lot of money and a lot of trouble, not to mention lost business. There is a lot of planning that needs to happen before one passes out there first bizcard and I would not have had a clue were it not for this book.

The author of this book has done an excellent job in providing the 'would-be desktop publisher' with lots of great information on how to get started in this business. The book is very clear and concise, with a sense of humor. It provides information step-by-step so it's very easy to follow.

A Pioneer Black Writer.......2003-06-01

In what Peter Abrahams calls an autobiography and meditation, "The Black Experience in the 20th Century" offers the personal account of Abrahams' experience as a black writer who began his career at the peak of the Pan-African movement.

By becoming a part of the liberating movement and associating with major players of the time, Peter Abrahams analyzes and delivers a thorough understanding black intellectualism -- its roots, its resolution, its pioneers, its personalities and its path.

"So [Marcus] Garvey redefined colour to serve our interests. He wanted his black folk to be equal of al other colours. He wanted all blacks - and for him it included all shades of black - to be as proud of their colour as were the whites of theirs: no intermarriage, no mixing of blood."

The liberation tactics often used by Black freedom fighters has often left the rest of the world questioning their respective methodology. Thus, Abrahams also questions Garvey's "Back to Africa" movement and the antics of Jomo Kenyatta in waging the Mau Mau war in Kenya.

"One of the saddest experiences in my life has been to watch, over time, some fine men being changed over circumstances." Abrahams gives his recollection of Kenyatta and the Mau Mau war.

"On that first journey back to Africa, when she was still in bondage, Kenyatta was an old friend from our London days. We walked the beautiful mountainous land together, met the people, shared out ideas with them, were close to them - which was why so many fought and died for the vision of the freedom and land he promised them. More than 11,000 mainly Kikuyu died in what the British government and the white settlers called the Mau Mau rebellion and the blacks called their freedom struggle. It was both a physical and propaganda war, with the propaganda at times seeming the bigger war. Kenyatta, in particular, and the Kikuyu in general were demonized."

Abrahams was born in South Africa in 1919 and just upon entering his manhood, became a seaman as a means to earn a living, thereby escaping the many evils of apartheid in his homeland. He eventually settles in England and there he begins his political journey as a writer and messenger of the free African word in a not so free world for any type of African.

He lives through World War II; a time many Africans chose to adopt socialist and communist ideas, while also finding liberation in Marxism. The poltical support blacks gave to these parties opened doors that created opportunities for Africans from the Diaspora to meet and develop deeper strategies for African emancipation.

Abrahams gets to meet other black literati including Langston Hughes, Richard Wright and W.E.B Dubois. These men were his friends and he goes into detail about their personalities, how their lives shaped their writing, and thus their unique epistle to the world.

The first half of Abrahams account is extremely lively and filled with the drama of Africanist movement. His discussion of the use of language, especially English as a freedom tool provides a unique slant on the contribution blacks have made to literature and communication in general.

His hypothesis on Black living comes from experience and is indeed worth reading to gain a new perspective. It would suffice if the book continued on this path, with Abrahams perhaps following through on the lives of some of these leaders.

This book however is an autobiography, and thus half of it is about Abrahams' life in Jamaica. The reader is led into a literal trap, which seemingly takes a while to recover from. Meaning the reader is led to believe this is a thorough, account on who our African leaders are, how they did it and perhaps why Africa is in its current state.

Indeed Abrahams provides some of these answers, and brilliantly so, which makes the book hard to put down. But, when Abrahams begins his account of life in Jamaica, one is led to believe he will eventually change the course of the book, and continues to describe African thought. This expectation comes chapter after chapter, and indeed, sadly, it means reading about Jamaican as well as West Indian politics and Abrahams' role as a journalist there.

"The Black Experience in the 20th Century," ends disappointingly, but as reflected in its title the novel is about Abrahams' experience as a Black man, and "Black" thought and his life just provides a window into the lives of some African leaders.
