I am always looking for a new character who I will be able to meet in future adventures. Perhaps another Carlotta Carlyle or a Stephanie Plum. I found Sterling Glass delightful, but the book itself was a bit slow.

I bought this book for my mom who loves antiques and watching Antique Road Show. She read it quickly and asked for the sequal for her birthday! She said it was light reading, but very good. She enjoyed the plot with the main character having to travel from VA to NY to evaluate antiquities in different locations. She also enjoyed how each chapter opened with a "Dear Abby" style question about antiques.

Ms. Jenkins combines her knowledge of antiques and collectibles with her humor and delivers a fun and challenging mystery. Her style of "who done it" is immersed in the secondary market of antiques and collectibles yet retains a strong mystery flair. Her book is effective in keeping the reader in suspense while entertaining them with Southern humor. This is a great read for anyone interestred in antiques and collectibles!

Not as promised.......2006-03-13

After reading the other reviews - I thought "This book is for me!" - but I was sorely disappointed and I noticed (after the fact of spending the hard cover price), that all the five-star reviews were from people in Virgina, NC or Texas - so maybe Ms. Jenkin's fan base checked in to help her sell her book? There was also too much coincidence in the fact that the lead character runs into another character in 3 spots in one day in Manhattan - not a likely scenario - it's a big city!

Rarely do I recommend books to my friends. I (almost) never recommend books to my father. I have recommended Stealing with Style to both friends and family and they have all enjoyed reading it as much as I did. Especially my father.

James P. Blaylock has been publishing singular, literate, evocative stories since 1977, but Thirteen Phantasms and Other Stories appears to be his first (and a complete) collection. Its 16 stories have little concern for genre; Blaylock slides from the fantastic to subtle horror to slipstream, sometimes in the same story. His introduction, with its mentions of an antique shop of mysterious orientalia and of aquaria stocked with obscure oddities, perfectly prefigures the concerns of his stories. The past is sometimes the setting, and it often haunts or drives the characters. But this is no simple nostalgia; Blaylock knows the past, irrecoverable yet inescapable, can be a burden and a trap. Mysteries, too, compel or lure many characters, with their strangeness and shadows and dangers. And some characters pursue--or are controlled by--peculiar obsessions.

Thirteen Phantasms does not present the stories in chronological order, but reading them chronologically reveals Blaylock's evolution into a great writer. His first sale, 1977's atmospheric ship-of-fools/bus-of-bozos fantasy "The Red Planet," is creepy, but too mysterious and underdeveloped to please many readers. A decade later, Blaylock would win the World Fantasy Award with the deserving and powerful "Paper Dragons"; set in a world in which matter has become mutable, it is one of the most unusual dragon stories ever written. The most recent story, 1998's "The Old Curiosity Shop," is a tremendous work in which a man who abandoned his wife discovers she has literally dwindled away from grief, and the objects she left behind, curios sold to a strange shop, are so invested with the weight of memories that a man might be crushed beneath a single item.

Most of the stories take place in contemporary California, but three of the exceptions ("The Ape-Box Affair," "Two Views of a Cave Painting," and "The Idol's Eye") are set in an alternate-history England in which H.G. Wells's science fiction must be fact; and they belong to that rarest of subgenres, comic steampunk. These entertaining adventures feature Langdon St. Ives, a Victorian scientist-adventurer after the manner of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Professor Challenger, and the hero of Blaylock's novels Homunculus (winner of the Philip K. An Important Collection From a Master of Fantasy Fiction.......2001-01-09

This book collects almost all of Blaylock's short fiction and includes an introduction by the author which is just as entertaining as any of his stories. The pieces included here were originally published in various magazines and anthologies and most of them have never been reprinted. Blaylock is one of the quirkiest and most original writers around and if you've never read anything by him this book is a good introduction. The stories in this collection were published over a period of 25 years, and you can see the progression of Blaylock's talent. The earlier pieces pale in comparison to the later ones, but they all bear the unmistakeable mark of Blaylock's genius for fantasy, and his belief that all the little details in our everyday lives can sometimes add up to more than the sum of their parts. Highlights include the World Fantasy Award winning stories "Paper Dragons" and "Thirteen Phantasms".

Excellent Book.......2007-09-01

I just want to say that I do not usually rate books but i felt compelled to write about this one. I have been doing this routine for 2 weeks now and let me tell you I can see a difference. I did not have to start with the Body Conditioning because I had already been doing another routine. I did start with toning and sculpting. I am doing his suggested routines and I like the fact that for two weeks (6 days) you do a different routine. It breaks it up and it does not get boring. Besides the fact that you really get to use other equipment that maybe you did not realize how to use.
My friend, myself and my daughter are all doing the routine and we all love it.,
Excellent book hope there is more to come.,

I am impressed with the book. It teaches you each muscle group, exercises for each group and how to put them all together in a routine. It explains nutrition and is a great guide to building a better body. I am very happy with it, I find myself going back again and again to the specific exercise instructions. I would highly recommend it.

Great for people starting to workout in the gym.......2006-11-20

This is a great book for people new, starting or returning to gym work. I got this book from the library. After 1 month, got it again from the library. However, since I keep on referring to it, I finally bought my own copy. I love it! After reading so many books, I can say this one is the best and the one that works for me! I like Brad's explanation of things, it really helps a lot. Using it for 6 weeks with cardio improved my physique. I lost a lot of inches and I can see my body really change. I am so happy with it! I even borrowed and eventually bought his other books. The Look Great in Sleeveless is also very good. It has lots of similarities with the Sculpting book or even repeats his explanations of the basics of how things should be done or how our bodies work, etc. but I still find the Sleeveless Book complements the Sculpting book very well (Sleeveless book has versions for home use). If you're unsure and feel it might be a waste of money, try borrowing it from the library, read it and then put what you read into use. Most likely, like me, you'll end up buying a copy for you won't be able to live without it either!

If you're new to weight training, this might be good for you because there's a lot of description and pictures. If you're a little more advanced, you might want to pass - there's nothing new in here, and some of the suggestions are a little old school for me.

Very presentable book with excellent color photos. The training section is also very good. The constant advertising of the Nylabone (chew toys) however, is quite irritating. Also, the book tends to generalize quite a bit and presumes that you have a puppy instead of an older dog. The health care section makes no mention of health problems specific to Schnauzers such as hip dysplasia and cysts and recommends you take your dog to the Vet for virtually every ailment. Save your money and read the internet if you want info. Or you can have my copy.

We are getting a Standard next year, and I thought I knew everything about this breed until I read this book. Very informative, and the pictures are great!! I am very pleased with this book and I would tell anyone considering this wonderful breed to definitly get this book!!

This book is highly recommended for anyone interested in Schnauzers. Mr. Gallant has been a breeder for over 25 years in the Netherlands and currently in South Africa. Excellent information regarding temperament, grooming, training and pedigrees. The section on the Giant Schnauzer is comprehensive and accurate. I recommend this book to all who purchase a Schnauzer.

intelligent and down to earth introduction to schnauzers.......1998-07-03

This is the first book about schnauzers that I've ever read that combines European and American schnauzers in one book. There are lots of pictures of both US champions and European champions. Mr. Gallant also writes very well about temperment. I really recommend this book to every one who considers getting a schnauzer.

A Superior Basketball Card Reference.......2000-05-11

Beckett Publications has issued the most recent version of their ever-popular basketball card price guide. Although it is not as comprehensive as Krause's Standard Catalog of Basketball Cards, it is nonetheless a superior reference work. This inexpensive paperback provides the collector with a handy price guide for the major mainstream sets, in a convenient mass market format. It is often found for sale not only in regular bookstores, but on racks at newsstands and retail outlets. The pictures inside are small but give the collector a good idea of what the cards look like, both front and back. Veteran collectors might consider the prices a bit high, but such is the case with most card guides. It is not very difficult to find a street level or card show dealer who hawks their wares at "20 to 50% off Beckett." A couple of things you won't find, however, in this otherwise helpful shorthand guide are a detailed history of the hobby or listings for the many attractive minor issue sets sought by advanced collectors. My rating would be higher had I got the book. I traced the book and it says it was delivered but I never got the book.

Who cares about organization!.......2004-04-11

So what if the organization of this book isn't to some peoples likings (as some reviewers have remarked)! This book saved several of my tropical plants lives. I'm a long time plant lover and propagator but was unfamiliar with tropicals and a few other plant families. I primarily raised cacti and spider plants.

I was baffled by the brown bumps on my White Bird of Paradise plant but figured they were a part of the plant since they looked like wood bumps. After reading this book I found out they were bugs called Scale which suck the life from the plant and, when hatched, can jump from plant to plant. I also found out that what I had thought was just a problem with dust was in fact mildew, another potentially devistating disease. My plants are now all very happy.

I have hard water in my area and found out about the need to use vinegar and water to "rinse" the salt from the soil in hard water situations. I've also always suspected that the tags that come with plants are bogus and this book explains exactly why. I was so surprised about this book to tell you the truth. I got it from the library to see if I could figure out the above problems then had to buy the book.

I have other books that have all the "pretty pictures" but they are typically useless. I'd rather have a book that was informative and accurate. If you ant to keep your plant healthy and happy for the length of it's natural life, this book is among the ones to add to your shelf. If you want a book for plant identification then either get a Peterson Guide (all very good) or do a google image search with "tropical plants" or "flowering indoor plants", etc. I do that when looking up new varieties of herbs, medicinal weeds and other plants. Find the name then use a book, not all websites are good information.

Clear and Sound Information.......2002-05-27

This book is well written and provides sound information and guidance. I bought the book because I know little about houseplants. After a few minutes of reading I went to the nursery as an informed consumer. The salesman in the store where I bought my plants confirmed that the book is excellent. You can look up a topic in the index and find out what you need to know in a few minutes. There is a description of the care required for many, many plants and the advantages and disadvantages of each. This book gives the uninitiated the inside scoop.

Good content, so-so organization.......1999-03-02

The content of this book is very good - from the time you walk out the door to the garden store, to the time you finish enclosing your own greenhouse (yikes), this book will have you covered. Pictures & "insider tips" are particularly useful & clear. The book's overall organization, on the other hand, wasn't so hot. Chapter 3 (Buying a plant) and Chapter 14 (preparing plants for domestic life) are separated by the photo index, pruning tips, and instructions for hydroponic growing. Are we supposed to do all that on the car ride home? My guess is Hodgson's expertise had to be "reordered" to fit the Dummies format. All the same, if you can navigate the format, you'll find some great information

Interesting story of a peculier situation.......2006-05-05

Ethnic novels really are not my thing. But this one had me interested after seeing pictures in a book on the civil war titled 'Slave Children of New Orleans' featuring mostly mixed race children of near caucasion appearence I became curious about them. Having read a great deal of the civil war there really isn't that much. So when I found this book I quickly took to reading it.

The main character is what is called 'A child of the plantation', the offspring of a slave owner and a slave woman the product not of love but of exploitation who are so casually discarded as to be a disgrace. In the beginning, she is very naive and optimistic. Regrettably, life doesn't treat her that well.

An interesting story. Admittedly I would have done things different but since this one is based on fact I can't rightly complain. I liked reading about the main character and how she was treated by all parties. Certainly I do not like that she was mistreated by many. Her ability to move among white circles was interesting only when her heritage is revealed do things get bad which disgusts me.

Overall, I take people at face value and wish everyone else would do the same. People should be judged by their behavior rather than by pseudo scientific nonsence.

This is one of the best books I've read in my life. Alex Haley was such a skilled writer. "Queen" deals with many harsh facts of the antebellum South without becoming vulgar. It is also an inspiring tale of an American family.

One of my complaint with "Queen" is the blatant misuse and fabrication of facts by David Stephens, who finished Alex Haley's posthumus masterpiece. The writing of Mr. Stephens also doesn't measure up to that of Haley. While it is a great book as it stands, I wish I could see what this book would be if Haley had been alive to complete it.

The parts written by Alex Haley are good........2004-03-11

This book is a travesty. The guy who wrote it isn't even American. He plays fast and loose with historical facts. The potato famine is in the wrong century. Napoleon invades Ireland before he even rose to power. There are at least two chapters that are totallly irrelevant. Why does he feel the need to give us a history lesson on Andrew Jackson and the Indian removal? Does he think the Indian removal and slavery are the same issue?
On the other hand, the parts written by Alex Haley are exceptional. It is very easy to pick out which parts Alex Haley wrote. They are well-written and historically based. It is just such a shame that Mr. Stevens was allowed to add to Alex's work. Mr. Stevens cannot not write anything but cheap, historical romance. He should be writing for Harlequin, instead of, ruining the work of a great American writer.

A triumphant story of hope and glory........2001-12-12

Alex Haley & Dave Stevens' QUEEN is a rare gem---the story of an american family that touches many lives. Queen is the main focus of the book but her story spans past & future generations from Ireland to America. Some of the characters are tragic but all have hope for a better tomorrow. The heartbreak of Easter's love for her "master", Queen being taught to read by her grandpa and the Haley family's quest to get a better education for their youngest son are just some of the heartbreaking stories in this novel. I enjoyed the book very much and I now hope to finally read ROOTS.

Come Up With Serene Responses to Today's Suttle Racism.......2001-03-15

I just finished reading this book, this morning. And, I read "Roots," 2 weeks ago. In both of these books, I was able to vicariously be there, and emotionally travel with each person in these stories.

And it gave me a sense of peace that I had not had before about being African-American. It helped me to come up with the most empowering responses to not only suttle racism from Euro-Americans, but also suttle responses to African-Americans who seem to be bound by expecting to just get by (who also believe that empowered African-Americans somehow owe them endless worthiness).

To me, even though this book is titled "Queen," it has many stories: politics; narcissism; racism; boys growing into manhood; belonging; the price of not having someone to verbalize your pains to; and, how whites turned their outrage over their motherland into what drove them to do the same to blacks, in this country.

During the entire time that I was reading these 2 books, as I conducted my day to day responsibilities, I felt like I had a secret weapon against being held back. And I saw things that I might not have seen before in what I could do to turn suttle racism into my opportunity to expect mutual respect between myself and my interlocutor.

I recommend this book, and "Roots" to any who is looking for a means to grow beyond your wildest expectations. You will cry with these stories, laugh, and feel every possible emotion, knowing that you are breathing new life into your life.
