Book Description
It's 1926, and Joe Sandilands is back from Ranipur, enjoying the frantic pleasures of Jazz Age London. Yet there is a darkness behind all the postwar gaiety. A woman has been discovered bludgeoned to death in her suite at the Ritz. A broken window and missing emerald necklace suggest that it is a burglary gone wrong. But the corpse is that of a much respected member of the British establishment, Dame Beatrice Joliffe, one of the founders of the Wrens; so Scotland Yard sends Joe to conduct a swift enquiry. Then, Joliffe's companion, an ex-chorus girl, falls from Waterloo Bridge at twilight, and two of the Dame's clique of eager young Wrens commit suicide.
Although these deaths make Joe suspect that Beatrice has been killed by someone close to her, he suddenly finds that the case is closed, and he is asked by his superiors to surrender his files. Against the background of a looming general strike and pressure from unseen governmental presence, Joe struggles on, picking his way through the political panic and rebelling against authority.
The fifth title in the Golden Dagger Award-winning series, The Bee's Kiss builds to a shattering solution.
Customer Reviews:
One of her Best.......2006-11-04
This was one of the best of the Joe Sandilands series. I counldn't put it down and I look forward enthusiastically to the next in the series. I found it to be a real page turner; full of appropriate color of an interesting time in England. She captured the essence just right. And even though I have read all her other Sandilands books, and knew her style and techniques, I couldn't guess the ending. Great book.
a fascinating and enjoyable read.......2006-08-09
Barbara Cleverly exchanges the lush and colourful India of the British Raj for the frantic and decadent London of the Jazz age in this latest Joe Sandilands mystery novel; and while there is no doubt that she has written another very intriguing and riveting mystery novel, I have to own that like the previous entries in this fascinating series, I'm still having problems with the manner in which she portrays her characters.
It's 1926 and London seems to be under the grip of two threats: that of a looming general worker's strike and the exploits of a dashing jewel thief that seems to be preying on rich and beautiful people of the upper classes. And when Dame Beatrice Jagow-Joliffe, one of the founders of the WRENS (the Women's Royal Naval Service), is found savagely bludgeoned to death in her suite at the Ritz, the natural assumption is that it was a jewel robbery gone terribly wrong. But there is something very personal about the savagery at which Dame Beatrice was attacked that leads Commander Joe Sandlilands to suspect that the motive for her murder was very personal indeed, and that it had nothing to do with her missing jewels. Briskly he starts to delve into the lady's life, only to be confronted with the lady's unconventional lifestyle and orders from the powers that be to close the case as quickly and as quietly as possible...
"The Bee's Kiss" was a wonderfully swift paced and very absorbing read. ONce I started, I found that I really had to finish it in one go. Barbara Cleverly did a wonderful job, I thought, of sustiaing the suspense and smooth flow of the book. Also well done was the manner in which she depicted the darker and more sinister aspects of London social life during the Jazz Age, as well as all the prejudices that the upper classes and government had towards the workers that were threatening to go on strike if their demands weren't met -- all this gave a wonderful dark and atmospheric feel to "The Bee's Kiss." I also thought that all the plot twists and turns were very well executed as well. The only problem I had with "The Bee's Kiss" was that the characters SOMETIMES came across as caricatures, and as such were not very credible -- esp when, inevitably, one compares it with Charles Todd's Ian Rutledge mystery series. All in all though, this was still a very riveting and intriguing read, and well worth the money spent.

Enjoyable but dated.......2001-08-11
Yes, I realize that this book was written before we learned much about Mars. Ignorance I can forgive, and speculation can be a wonderful thing (especially in science fiction). But MZB's arrogance and contempt for expert scientific opinion detracted from an otherwise engaging and entertaining tale. Still, it's an excellent example of sf from that era.
I found a copy of "The Brass Dragon".......2000-02-21
I remembered bits and pieces of the book from reading it years ago, but did not remember the name. I was sooooo excited to find it in a used bookstore and be able to read it again. The book begins with the main character having amnesia. You really feel what he is going through trying to find out what has happened. I loved finding things out along with the character. The mystery unfolds in a chilling and exciting way. This book is one that is really hard to put down, even when you've read it before. I hope others can find it so they can enjoy it as much as I did.

An excellent introduction to science fiction........1998-07-07
This was the first sci. fi. book I ever read.(1977). I read it 20 times in a row. It has fantastic characters and an excellent storyline. It combines elements of sci. fi. adventure, horror, thriller, romance and drama. From the first paragraph, it captivates the reader. There are no 'slow' spots. Great for ages 10 and over. Adults will enjoy this book as much as younger readers. Not a long story. It's a shame there is no sequel. Do yourself a favour- read this book. Your life will never be the same again!
P.S My sister wrote this, not me.
One of the best Science-Fiction/Mysteries I've ever read.......1998-05-11
A really good mix of science fiction and mystery and the key is of course, the Brass Dragon, it hold the key to the future of mankind

Customer Reviews:
Nothing new to add, except..........2007-08-07
I liked the whole idea of the book and so badly wanted to recreate a little "magic" found in Emeril's restaurants! However...I found it virtually impossible (daunting) to make any of his recipes. It would have taken days! Most of them are so complicated only a professionally trained chef with sou chefs at his/her disposal could do it!
It's like I open the book, see something I really want...begin to read the 2-3 page recipe and think...forget it! I find it hard to believe anyone has the time, money or energy to cook these recipes weekly like some have claimed on here. Maybe someone retired or independantly wealthy with lots of cooking experience might be able to pull one of these recipes off. It almost makes me think Emeril's goal was simply to make another cookbook to make more money...without giving the home cook much thought. His recipes on tv don't seem so difficult!
I gave it 3 stars because I want to cook this food...I just can't!
Serious Fans Only.......2005-12-17
I say serious fans only because these recipes are almost universally too time consuming and difficult for the average--or even advanced--home cook. If you're someone who seriously loves Emeril Lagasse, then you might want this book since his personality is stamped into it and it does have charm and some nice illustrations of delicious-looking dishes, but what I said up there stands: this is for show, not real life use. Without a lot of experienced help, you're not going to be able to create most of the items featured in here, and isn't a cookbook supposed to be about fixing the foods listed within it?
Great variety of recipes.......2005-09-24
We use recipes weekly from this book. There are many varieties of recipes that appeal to our family. Emeril makes it fun to cook, not only fun, but great to taste.
I need an army of kitchen staff.......2005-06-20
Boy, it was not easy to follow the recipes. Keep in mind that Emeril has an army of kitchen staff to do the prep work and the cleaning afterwards. I worked as a chef before and I found the book too far fetched for a home kitchen. I also agree with other reviewers that it's not a pretty book to display.
Tough to produce.......2005-02-27
I'm sure they are all good...but I guess I was expecting simipler preparation....sigh....the good stuff is always so difficult.

If you've got an olive tree in your yard, get this book........1998-12-06
"The Essential Olive Oil Companion" isn't about oil only. It also explains the steps needed the convert those hard green fruit on your olive tree in delicious snacks and ingredients in Mediterranean recipes. If you've got an olive tree in your yard, orchard or garden, get this book.
A culinary book written with enthusiasm and feeling.......1998-07-12
I very much enjoyed the stucture of the book. The historical introduction on olive oil is splendid. The chapters on processing, tasting, etc are the best yet on this subject in books of wide readership. Throughout the book one gets permeated by the author's contagious enthusiasm. The chapter on Spanish oils is accurate and fair.Illustrations are also of fine quality. The only blemish I was able to find was the frequent spelling mistakes in the original language of different recipes:"ajo blancho", "carne machada", "bagna calda" etc
Customer Reviews:
Out of Date.......2004-08-18
This book is out of date- just look at some of the pictures- and not a good book for a novice cockatiel owner keeping one bird as a companion. I suppose it is a good book for breeding, but I only want a pet. Many of the much thinner books on cockatiels available in pet stores have superior and more up to date material.
Outdated "encyclopedia" not a good source for avian info.......2004-01-08
The information in this book is out of date and in many cases, harmful to your pet if you practice any of it. This book advocates clipping only one wing to tame a bird which is dangerous in practice- it makes a bird more prone to injury when it takes flight. It also encourages misinformation about bird health; the book asserts that healthy cockatiels look healthy. In reality, sick birds do their best to hide their sicknesses because they are naturally prey animals. Other practices akin to phrenology in this book are simply invalid today. I would not recommend this for a new owner or anyone in need of practical advice for raising or caring for a cockatiel. While some of the information is correct, there is also enough misinformation to make an inexperienced owner a danger to their pets.
At least the pictures are cute, so it's not a total loss.
Informative, clear.......2001-10-15
It was easy to understand and everthing covered in this book was stated mater-of-factly. It had info on colors, maintenance, breeding, basic genetics, problems, courting and mating behaviours, some health issues, babies, and the cockatiel in general. This book was strongest on the subject of breeding but it lacked info on newer, more rare mutations. Over all this book is perfect for novice and experienced breeders as a sorce to refer to when questions arise. It would make a great companion to a cockatiel book that stresses more of the do's and don'ts of first time bird owning for the first time cockatiel owner.
this would be a very short review, ¡IT'S EXELENT!.......1999-04-06
WE LIKED YOUR BOOK A LOT IT IS REALLY VERY HELPFULLWHILE YOU ARE RAISING BABIES COCKATIELS I SPECIALY LIKED THAT YOU TELL AT WHAT TEMPERATURE THE BABIES HAVE TO BE AND YOU TEACHED US HOW TO FEED THEM, BUT IN THE CHAPTER OF COLORS YOU SHOULD USE PHOTOGRAPHS ON COLOR AND PUT MORE COCKATIEL PHOTO THAN OTHER KINDS OF BIRDS BUT THE ALL OTHER PART OF THE BOOK IS REALLY REALLY GREAT AND I THINK IT IS INTERESTING, WELL IS GREAT THAT WE HAVE THE CHANCE TO REVIEW IT ,THANKS I AM RELLY THANKED TO YOU.

Learn landscape secrets that can save your garden, your home, and maybe your sanity after the next big one in Florida!
Pamela Crawford, bestselling Florida garden author and researcher, has a new book that will show you how to landscape to minimize wind damage, both to your garden and your home. She has researched and analyzed thousands of pages of data and spoken to hundreds of experts - from Max Mayfield, the director of the National Hurricane Center, 37 different county extension directors, four botanical gardens, 12 researchers from University of Florida, and many emergency managers - and found answers that every homeowner in Florida needs to know. The results of her research are astounding, and can make your experiences in the next hurricane go from catastrophic to a mere inconvenience.
Customer Reviews:
Stormscaping.......2006-02-24
Reviews the safety of planting the more common trees Florida, relative to their stability in windstorms. The information is valuble but restricted to a relatively small group of trees. The pertinent details are backed up with examples and pictures.
haphazard and incomplete.......2005-09-28
This must have been written in a hurry. The list of trees is incomplete to the extreme and the information is scattered throughout the book. I wish I hadn't paid $ 30 for this.
An Excellent Reference.......2005-08-13
A considerable amount of hurricane damage could be avoided if we took better care in selecting landscape trees, along with placement and pruning. This book is packed with useful information and should be required reading for all home owners in Florida.
Excellent photos and plant information. My only quibble is the colored pages and print. I really think readability would be greatly improved is this was simplified. Even so, the book is an invaluable resource.
Best How to Best Landscape for The Florida Hurricane.......2005-03-01
This Hurricane Season, especially after experiencing Hurricane Charley's full furry on Pine Island, has only demonstrated some of the downfalls that we have had in our previous landscape plan. I am sure that we all realize that there are going to have to be changes made, but are at a loss to know where to start. Realizing this problem, Pamela Crawford has put all her energy is trying to solve this dilemma for us in her book Stormscaping. In this book she has enlisted the help of over 50 horticultural experts throughout the State to find out what worked and what didn't and why. She has taken the information that she collected and put it all into an easy to read and understand book. The book covers a multiple of questions that we all have encountered after these storms such as, understand the basics of the hurricane and designing our landscaping to minimize the wind damage to our homes. She answers the questions of why and what trees fall easily and what plants are more wind tolerant than others. She also has a chapter on how to care for the trees and plants that have been damaged from the storm.
Living in Florida and especially on the West Coast of Florida, this is a "must have book" for my library. The information is there so that we can make intelligent decisions on our landscaping in order to protect us from the next storm. Hopeful this will never happen again, but "it is better to be safe that sorry" and be prepared just incase.

A must have book for any amateur or professional.......2005-02-25
Any Lanscape architect, landscape designer or weekend gardner that does not pick up and read this wonderfull book is missing out on a tremendous amount of valuable information. This book should become a permanent addition to one's reference library. As a professional in the landscape industry for the past 20 years, I am so glad to see such an information packed book for a region that has been looking for answers since Hurricane Andrew. The over 10 billon doller landscape industry in Florida has always been at the risk of mother nature and this book helps define that relationship.

Book Description
William of Poitiers began his career as a knight before studying in the schools of Poitiers and entering the Church. He became a chaplain in the household of William the Conqueror, and was able to give a first-hand account of the events of 1066-7. The Gesta Guillelmi, his unfinished biography of the king, is particularly important for its detailed description of William's campaigns in Normandy, the careful preparations he made for the invasion of England, the battle of Hastings and the establishment of Norman power after the Conquest. It is a mine of information of military tactics and the conduct of war in the eleventh century. Though written from the point of view of the Norman court, it gives what is probably the most authentic account of these momentous events. This edition, by the late R. H. C. Davis and Marjorie Chibnall, with facing-page English translation of the Latin text, provides the first complete English translation, as well as a full historical introduction and detailed notes.
Customer Reviews:
A Chronicle And Biography Of King William I.......1998-06-11
This is the the one and only living memoir of William The Conqueror. Although laden with some historical inaccuracies of pre-Norman England, this chronicle is perhaps the only memoir of William I during his lifetime. It was written by William I's own chaplain, William Of Poitiers(WP) who knew him personally. WP was a knight before becoming a priest in his king's court. His descriptions of the Battle of Hastings is perhaps the most valuable historical information about battle tactics in the eleventh century. Unfortunately WP was unable to finish his chronicle for unknown reasons. Speculations indicated that he fell out of favor in William I's court. This text in its original Medieval Latin was unfortunately preserved in only one manuscript. This original manuscript is now lost, probably disintegrated by a fire. Fortunately it was edited once by Duchesne in the 17th century. The edited text is used as a basis for the present edition we have today.

Book Description
Since the publication of Th. Charland's Artes Praedicandi in 1936, several significant studies of the rise and development of Arts of Preaching have appeared. There are, however, a few aspects of both classical and medieval traditions surrounding these artes which have not been featured in earlier critiques and which contribute to an appreciation of the form, namely: the changing concept of the word "ars", the dialectical/logical emphasis of the schoolmen, and most importantly, the great pastoral movement of the high Middle Ages which can be posited as the ultimate impetus for an art's composition. The latter phenomenon separates the artes praedicandi from the artes dictaminis and poeticae and gives perspective on the shaping influences in preaching tradition. Finally, the specifically Higden material focuses attention on his singularly well-made manual for the construction of a thematic sermon, the Ars componendi sermones.

Book Description
In the High Middle Ages and Renaissance letter-writing flourished as a major form of discourse and branch of rhetoric. Hundreds of treatises and manuals on epistolary composition, formularies, and model letter collections were written. This census is the first systematic survey of the extant manuscripts containing these works found in part of Western Europe, Japan, and the U.S.A. The few manuscripts with model speeches are also included. They are of a related genre, secular oratory, which developed in the High Middle Ages. Over 1,200 Latin manuscript references have been compiled from visits to over 250 libraries and archives. The survey is alphabetically arranged by country, city, library or archive and collection and gives standard details -- folios, incipits, explicits, and colophons of the texts. Editions, studies, and catalogue references are provided as are lists of libraries and archives without relevant manuscripts. Four indexes of manuscripts, incipits, Medieval and Renaissance authors, and select anonymous works are included. The work is a research tool for those interested in Medieval and Renaissance rhetoric, oratory, diplomatics, learning, and the Classical tradition.
