Book Description
During her years spent in New York City. Faith Fairchild was convinced she had seen pretty much everything. But the transplanted caterer/minister's wife was unprepared for the surprises awaiting her in the sleepy Massachusetts village of Aleford. And she is especially taken aback by the dead body of a pretty young thing she discovers stashed in the church's belfry. The victim, Cindy Shepherd. was well-known locally for her acid tongue and her jilted beaux, which created a lot of bad blood and more than a few possible perpetrators -- including her luckless fiance, who had neither an alibi nor a better way to break off the engagement. Faith thinks it's terribly unfair that the police have zeroed in on the hapless boyfriend, and so she sets out to uncover the truth. But digging too deeply into the sordid secrets of a small New England village tends to make the natives nervous. And an overly curious big city lady can become just another small town death statistic in very short order.
Customer Reviews:
Oh to be in New England ..........2006-04-27
The first of the 'Body in the where-ever' mysteries as best I could figure out from copyright dates. Faith ran her own catering business in New York City when she met and fell in love with Tom Fairchild. Now, she's a mother and a minister's wife in Aleford, MA trying to fit into the fabric of the small town and considering starting up her business again before boredom kills her.
But she finds the dead body of Cindy Shepherd in the belfry at lunch time and rings the bell. You sort of have to know New England to realize that ringing the bell becomes as much a scandal as the body/murder. Cindy's parents Robert & Patricia Moore are not all that upset about Cindy's murder but are outraged that the police think it's her finance. Faith begins to ask questions and soon finds herself embroiled in town history and genealogy -- then it's a race whether she'll find the murderer or the murderer will find her.
Well written though not as tight as I'd like. I will go on to read more by this author because the promise is here in the descriptions and the characters.
A really fun read!.......2005-05-24
I recommend this book for a really fun read - it's perfect for any vacation. Ms. Page has a wonderful sense of humor and is a fantastic writer! I am looking forward to reading all the other Faith Fairchild mysteries.
First book of the series.......2000-11-08
This book is the beginning of a growing list of "Body in the _____" series. Its heroine is Faith Sibley, a native New Yorker who has started a gourmet catering service. She meets and falls in love with Tom Fairchild, a young minister who whisks her away from her beloved home town to a much different life in rural Massachusetts. Faith is trying her best to fit into the role of pastor's wife in a small town where everyone's family goes back several generations and where everyone knows everyone else's business. While taking a walk with her baby son, Benjamin, Faith discovers a dead body in a belfry. The body is that of Cindy Shepherd a young, willful girl who had made plenty of enemies in their small town. The suspects include Cindy's fiance, and several men with whom she had had affairs and was subsequently blackmailing. Faith's curiosity and unofficial investigations eventually lead her and Benjamin into grave danger. This is an interesting and well-written "cozy".
Delightfully upbeat heroine, communicative local color........1998-01-24
Hall's charming heroine Faith had me searching the web for more titles featuring her as sleuth. The author's descriptions of New England landscapes, customs and people leap off the page. The book drew me in from the first paragraph, and, unbelievably, drew tears from me at critical moments, so much did I care about the characters. I'm so happy there are more "Faith Fairchild" titles out there to enjoy!
Murder and Gourmet Cooking in a Boston Suburb........1998-01-01
Page has created an energetic and rather believable heroine in Faith Fairchild, a gourmet chef who marries a clergyman and moves from her hometown of New York City to a small town in New England. She feels like an outsider in her new home, but gets right in the thick of things when she finds a body in the town's most historic building. She is amazed to find that many of the residents are more upset that she rang the old bell than that a person was murdered!
I thought this book was highly entertaining, though I must admit that I spent a good deal of time wondering just which suburb she was supposed to be in, being myself a resident of the area. I would definitely recommend this book as a fabulous New England "cozy" with fun characters, solid writing, and good red herrings. She has written a good number of books in this series (Body in the Belfry being the first), so there is a lot to look forward to when you dive in! Page has also written a few young adult mysteries under the title of Christie and Company, which I have heard are also quite fun and educational for young readers.

A Well-Written Coming of Age Fantasy.......2002-09-16
Dara's biggest problem is trying to fit into the plain folk community of her family until Tars comes riding in. He brings with him the damen kesh, a tradition of the old land and demands that Dara's older sister, Mirina, marry him. If Mirina submits to the demand, the plain folk will be forever bound to support Tars and his people. Dara's father worries that, if they submit to this tradition, that it will pave the way for the priests, their tithes and other traditions in the new land. When Mirina commits suicide rather than doom her people, Dara has to make the same difficult choice that Mirina had: marry Tars through tradition, by force or die. On the way to Tars' home, Dara's father tells her to flee to the Ilijhari, the people who live in the hills and can talk to birds. While traveling, she encounters a renegade priest of Tith, the sun god in the old land. Together, Dara and Kentith make their way to the Ilijhari, where Dara finds out that she was adopted by the plain folk and that her mother was an Ilijhari and her father an unknown traveler. After a few days with the Ilijhari, Dara discovers that her adopted father was imprisoned by Tars for trying to hide her. She feels that she has no choice but to go to Tars and plead for her father's life. Kentith insists on accompanying her, even though there is a price on his head. Tars then holds Kentith hostage while he tries to persuade Dara to marry him. When the most powerful Tith priest, Narkith, starts destroying the land by fire, everyone blames Kentith. In order to save Kentith from execution at the hands of his fellow priests, Dara must agree to Tars' demands. But, as Tars and Dara hunt Narkith, everything changes...
This is a well written coming of age fantasy tale by Syndey J. Van Scyoc. Her characters are well drawn, but the reader feels the greatest kinship with the lead character, Dara, as she struggles to learn who she really is. Dara has great powers, but she is not all powerful. She makes mistakes and she loses control. Tars and Kentith were also very well developed and had many of the same crippling handicaps in their upbringing. Both were very strong characters and both had feelings for Dara. The world that Van Scyoc created was intriguing, although not fully fleshed out. The book had a strong message about life not always working out the way you would like it to. Dara had to make heartbreaking decisions and learn to follow her own pathway in life. This was a nice change from most books where everything works out in the end, but did not make the most pleasant ending.
ouch!.......1997-06-24
i just finished this book half an hour ago, and i started it this morning. it is in part the story of a girl learning to control her powers, much like anne logston's recent book whose title escapes me. the people fighting for freedom from religion, the imperious authority figure, the rebellious young man, these are all stock concepts; yet this author makes them sing. i love this book. one warning - the ending tore me apart

Customer Reviews:
Excellent book if you want to know it all!.......2007-10-08
Packed full of easy to understand information. Not only does it answer all of your questions for animal care but lots of it pertains to humans as well! I highly recommend this book!
A great book for pet owners.......2007-10-05
This is a very useful book for dog owners, especially people who have never had pets before. The doctor offers many suggestions for natural remedies for health problems with your pet.
Medicinal Use.......2007-09-13
I found this book very informative and useful when searching for holistic ingredients and supplements for my dog who has Addison's Disease. There are not many books out there that are user friendly with this disease, but this book made it very simple with highlighted notes and page reference numbers for other suggestions. I really liked the fact that this book had a list and explanation of all ingredients found in typical dog food products. The herbal remedies where a wonderful addition to my research and the book gave me definitions to all the products that were mentioned. Great book overall, and I would recommend it to anyone that is searching for holistic remedies for their pets or just for herbal and product information.
A wealth of information.......2007-06-27
First I would like to say I have never met Dr. Shawn and am writing
this because I am so pleased with his book. With the recent food scare
I was looking for a reliable source for a homemade food recipe. I live
in Dallas which is near where Dr. Shawn practices. He has written
articles for The Dallas Morning News and I've heard people speak
favorably of him on more than one occasion. I'm new to holistic care
and was a bit skeptical thinking I would be admonished for using
conventional medical care and products. This has not the case with his
book at all. Much of the information is just that, information for you
to make better choices for your pet. It is very well written and packed
with good information on supplements, herb, diet etc. I love this book
and have even learned that there are probably some supplements that I
could add to my diet. I would encourage everyone to buy this book as
it is so easy to read, well formatted, and full of information that
will help me give my dog the healthcare he deserves.
Jan
One of the best resources.......2007-06-17
This book is really useful for learning the uses and effects of different herbs and supplements. One of the best things about this book is how it's organized. One section lists ailments, each one with a description, treatment options, and listing of natural remedies. A second section lists all the natural remedies, what they can be used to treat, and how they work. I didn't find the nutrition section very useful, but I would definitely recommend the book for it's extensive ailment and remedy listings.

CORGIS RULE!.......2002-07-18
I DID NOT READ THIS BOOK, BUT CORGIS, ESPESCIALLY THE PEMBORKE WELSH VARIATION ROCK!
One of the weakest corgi books out there.......2001-10-30
The New Complete Pembroke Welsh Corgi by the same author (D. Harper) is vastly superior to this book. That book contains information about corgis & no other breed. Half of the information in this book is on corgis, but the rest of this book contains generic information that pertains to all breeds. For example; the "Happy Healthy Pet" book for westies shares some identical chapters with this one.
great book for corgi lovers.......2001-07-16
the book was great with lots of pictures and info. it was definatly worth the money. this dog is soo cute!
Good Information on Corgis...and overall dogs.......2001-03-21
I have just bought and read this book on Corgis for a corgi research project I am doing. It lists a brief myth of corgis with faeries and how they came to be, plus their regular history, who owns them, etc... I thought it was very good description wise, also. It did an overall description of a corgi, their parts, then gave some interesting facts about each part. The only thing I was disappointed in is when I got to Part 3 and 4 ("Enjoying your Dog" and "Beyond the Basics") of the book. It was mainly focusing on all breeds, not mentioning any specific corgi facts to watch out for. Further more, the book was showing pictures in those sections of mostly any dog but corgi. But that's me...I thought it was only going to be about corgis.
The cutest dog you'll ever get.......1999-04-24
A perfect book! It teaches you what to do when you bring it home, training, feeding, walking etc. Shows alot of many different pictures. It taught me all I need to know and much more!

Book Description
North America's eastern half, roughly from the Midwest to the Atlantic, was once a great deciduous forest. Although centuries of human intervention have cleared much of the land, the timeless forest remains in the spirit of the place. Today, even the shortest period of human neglect allows for the resurgence of the process of forest creation. The greatest gardens — and happiest gardeners — in this area will be those that take into account the nature of the land.
In his unique, and often thought-provoking new book, award-winning author Darke promotes and stunningly illustrates a garden aesthetic based on the strengths and opportunities of the woodland, including play of light, sound, and scent; seasonal drama; and the architectural interest of woody plants.
While written from a compelling and fresh perspective, The American Woodland Garden never strays from the realistic concerns of the everyday gardener. Information on planting, soils, and maintenance provides a firm foundation for horticultural accomplishment. An alphabetical list of woodland plants offers useful advice for every garden, emphasizing native trees, shrubs, vines, ferns, grasses, sedges, and flowering perennials that fit the forest aesthetic. More than 700 of the author's stunning photographs show both the natural palette of plants in the wild and the effects that can be achieved with them in garden settings. Many of the most striking photos in the book were taken at classic gardens that are paragons of an ecological style.
The American Woodland Garden is a clarion call to a new awareness of our relationship to the natural world. This book will take its rightful place among the classic works that have influenced our concept of the American landscape.
Customer Reviews:
Food for the soul........2007-07-10
If you live near the edge of woodlands as we do, you'll find this book to be a valuable source of information. It's a challenge to landscape the transition from woodland to home, but this book provides the knowledge needed to make that happen. And if you love to live in or near woodland areas as much as we do, you'll appreciate the wonderful photographs.
Must have book for woodland gardeners.......2007-05-14
This man is the best photographer of the woodlands and a great speaker. Would purchase any book by him.
Great Book!.......2007-03-26
I am a novice gardener but this book gives great advice and great choices from groundcover to shrubs and trees for the woodsy landscape. I refer to this book all the time.
Inspiration for Your Own Woodland Garden.......2007-03-18
A gorgeous, substantive book. It's not a how-to in a conventional sense, but it will definitely get your creative juices flowing in terms of your own woodlands. If you've never thought about "color palette" for plantings, you'll really enjoy this book.
A book of wonders........2007-02-12
This is simply the best book in my garden library. It is a way of looking at the environment around us, an ethos complete with pictures, information, and instruction. Be sure to buy this book in hardback, because paperback binding will never survive the hard useage this book will receive in your home.

Book Description
This short, well-written book covers the material essential for learning LATEX without any unnecessary detail. It discusses incisive examples that teach LATEX in a powerful yet abbreviated fashion, including the following crucial features: numerous examples of widely used mathematical expressions; complete documents illustrating the creation of articles, reports, and overhead projector slides; troubleshooting tips to help you pinpoint an error; details of how to set up a bibliography and an index; information about LATEX resources available on the Internet. LATEX has become an extremely popular typesetting system and is widely used throughout the sciences. Students may use it to typeset reports and theses (particularly graduate students in any mathematics or computer science discipline). The authors cover LATEX 2e, the latest standard version at the time of publication. An appendix discusses the differences between 2e and the older version, 2.09.
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2007-10-01
If you want to learn LATEX buy this book. I learned LATEX in 8 hours from reading this book. It is short and to the point.
A brief introduction to Latex.......2006-11-21
The text have several examples and it is very clear. It is a good book to begin to learn latex but no more. When one get more experience writing latex, the book has only de basic commandas and a bit more. Search over the internet for more material is a good advise.
One of the best Latex resources.......2005-12-22
I have tried reading a lot of online articles about learning Latex, and none of them was very helpful. After reading this book for 1 hour, I started creating my own document (which had a pressing deadline). Do buy this book if you are beginner in Latex: the treatment is lucid, helpful and easy-to-read. 95% needs of 90% Latex users will be served by the commands given in this small 60 page book. If you have more advanced needs, this book gives excellent referencs to other, more reference-like Latex books. Oh, and if you are a Windows user, I'd strongly recomment (MikTeX + TeXnicCenter) as your Latex software.
Very Good.......2005-11-26
Although some may consider this book to be awfully expensive for the few pages that it has, it is indeed worth the price.
The format of the presented information in this book is very well done. The LaTeX code is given on the left of the page and the rendering of the code is given on the right. This allows the reader to see the actual results yielded by the examples rather than only seeing the code. After all, how meaningful would it be to see LaTeX code and not know exactly what the actual rendering of it looks like?
Most features of LaTeX which I have needed for small documents and reports can be found in this book. There is also a nice sample report in the book which can be used as a template.
Finally, the book is not the least bit boring to read. The author has a sense of humor and gives interesting examples to illustrate various features of LaTeX.
In summary, this book is well worth its price. I hesitated to buy it at first because I thought the shortness of the book would result in the exclusion of important features. However, for my purposes, the book does a very good job of covering what is needed for short mathematical articles and reports.
This is a very good book for beginners of LaTeX. I strongly recommend it.
This is the way to start working with LaTex.......2005-09-20
Gets you up and running quickly. Has all the essentials to create documents using LaTex right away. Well worth the money.

Book Description
This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 6th International Conference on Mathematical Knowledge Management, MKM 2007, and the 14th Symposium on the Integration of Symbolic Computation and Mechanized Reasoning, Calculemus 2006, held in Hagenberg, Austria in June 2007 as events of the RISC Summer 2007, organized by the Research Institute for Symbolic Computation.
The 10 revised full papers from 23 submissions for Calculemus 2007 and 19 revised full papers, plus abstracts of 2 invited talks, selected from 52 submissions to MKM 2007 were carefully reviewed and selected for a joint presentation in the book. The papers cover different aspects of traditional branches in CS such as computer algebra and theorem proving, as well as newly emerging ones such as user interfaces, knowledge management, and theory exploration. Thus facilitating the development of integrated mechanized mathematical assistants.
