Book Description

In late 1923, the newly married Daisy Dalrymple and her husband Detective Chief Inspector Alec Fletcher of Scotland Yard, come to America for a honeymoon visit. In the midst of a pleasure trip, however, both work in a bit of business - Alec travels to Washington, D. C. to consult with the U.S. government, Daisy to New York to meet with her American magazine editor. While in New York, Daisy stays at the famed Chelsea Hotel, which is not only close to the Flatiron Building offices of Abroad magazine, where she'll be meeting with her editor, but home to many of New York's artists and writers. After her late morning meeting, Daisy agrees to accompany her editor, Mr. Thorwald, to lunch but as they are leaving the offices, they hear a gun shot and see a man plummeting down an elevator shaft. The man killed was one of her fellow residents at the Chelsea Hotel, Otis Carmody, who was a journalist with no end of enemies - personal and professional - who would delight in his death.Again in the midst of a murder investigation, Daisy's search for the killer takes her to all levels of society, and even a mad dash across the country itself, as she attempts to solve a puzzle that would baffle even Philo Vance himself.AUTHORBIO: Carola Dunn is the author of ten books featuring Daisy Dalrymple, most recently To Davy Jones Below, as well as numerous historical novels.Born and raised in England, she lives in Eugene, Oregon.

3 out of 5 stars Doesn't deliver the goods.......2004-05-27

I enjoy Daisy Dalrymple books. This one has Daisy staying in New York, working on a series of articles about America for an American magazine. While there (here's a shocker!) she's a witness to a murder.

OK, no problem. This now gives Dunn a reason to talk about America in the 1920's. She throws in Tammany Hall, J. Edgar Hoover, Prohibition, racial discrimination, the plight of the immigrant, etc, etc. I could put up with that, mostly, if there was a great plot. But there's not. The plot is rather thin. And the American dialect and jargon she throws in is so distracting that I kept losing sight of the story. I was really disappointed in this one. Please, Dunn, keep Daisy in England where she belongs!

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2004-01-21

Fans who have enjoyed this series so far will be disappointed by this disjointed jumble of mystery, travelog, and fanciful biography. All begins well as Daisy witnesses the murder of an unpleasant muckracking reporter. The reporter's faithless wife and her beau make an appearance. Unnameed powerful political enemies and a mysterious cousin are suggested as suspects, but never become part of the real story. No new clues are introduced and a lot of time is spent on impugning the competence of the FBI and the honesty of New York City police. Alex finally returns from Washington after an extended stay with J.Edgar Hoover,(interesting choice of partner for his honeymoon!) Daisy thinks she glimpses a man wearing a hat similar to someone she saw in the hallway during the murder. (I'm not making this up.) Based on this brainwave Daisy, Alex, and the FBI agent begin a transcontinental chase that begins in a taxi cab and then languishes in a bi-plane for several chapters. Bessie Coleman becomes a pinch-hitting pilot for them and we are treated to Carloa Dunn's idea of African American dialect as Bessie shares the story of her life. (These are interesting facts that have absolutely no bearing on the slowly lumbering plot.) Meanwhile criminal has been thoughtful enough to hijack several mail planes while he is on the lam. This is very useful since there is no evidence to connect him to the murder and the world's flimsiest is cranked out in the last pages. Eventually we are told the murderer was arrested. (Daisy chose to hide behind the plane while this was going on, so the readers have to use their own imaginations for the climax of the story. While they're at it the readers may as well imagine the whole thing and save themselves the price of this hodge podge.

3 out of 5 stars O.K. but . . ........2002-03-07

Daisy's latest is fun, but a little too light.

4 out of 5 stars a fun read.......2002-02-11

This latest Daisy Dalrymple mystery novel is not that much of a murder mystery at all, and more of an adventure abroad novel. However it is also the most light hearted of the Daisy Dalrymple mystery novels to date, and quite a bit of fun.

For Daisy and her husband Alec (a DCI with Scotland Yard), this visit to the United States of America is supposed to be a honeymoon trip. The reality is that Alec is in America in order to advise the Americans (J. Edgar Hoover in particular) on how to clean up and set up their Investigation Bureau of the Justice Department. So while Alec is stuck in Washington, Daisy is in New York, gathering material for her magazine articles and meeting her American editor. After one such meeting, while on their way to lunch, Daisy and her editor hear a gunshot and witness a man plummet to his death down an elevator shaft. Daisy quickly recognizes the murdered man as a fellow resident of the Chelsea Hotel. She then discovers that he is/was the journalist, Otis Carmody, an investigative reporter, also known as a 'muckraker.' It soon becomes apparent that Daisy, her editor, and a federal agent that had been shadowing Daisy (Alec's superior at the Scotland Yard had apparently warned Hoover that it would be wise to provide a watchdog for her as Daisy has the habit of getting involved in all kinds of unsavory goings-on) are the only credible witnesses to the Carmody's death (which of course turns out to be murder). Why was Carmody murdered and who committed the crime? Striking up friendships with other guests (and workers) at the Chelsea, Daisy discovers that Carmody was quite the crusading journalist, and that he had angered more than his fair share of dangerous and powerful men. Could one of them have commissioned Carmody's murder? And then there is the tantalising information about Carmody's estranged wife and her shady lover... Before long Daisy discovers that New York is not England, and that she could be in danger herself because she witnessed Carmody's murderer escaping. Never before has Daisy missed Alec so much or wished that she did not have this propensity to fall over a murder wherever she went.

"The Case of the Murdered Muckraker" is strictly for Daisy Dalrymple fans. It is a lighthearted read full of eccentric and quirky characters, and funny moments when Daisy ponders over the differences between the English that the British speak and the English that the American speak -- how this brought back memories of my first few years in the US -- and the differences between the manner in which Scotland Yard would have run things and the manner in which the New York detectives carry out an investigation. And while there some gathering of information and sounding out of theories, this mystery novel is still not much of a murder mystery like the previous Daisy Dalrymple mystery novels -- no red herrings, twists and turns in plot development, etc. However it is a charming and humourous book, that is bound to entertain and lighten the mood. And Carola Dunn does a wonderful job of bringing to life Prohibition-era New York, as well as certain character types. So read it for fun and entertainment and a bit of a laugh, and read something else if you're in the mood for a wicked murder mystery.

5 out of 5 stars False Gods *Bleep* With Our Lives.......2005-05-25

This volume reprints two separate stories and represent among the best writings by Chris Claremont. The first one is an X-Men/Alpha Flight story drawn by the legendary Paul Smith. The second one is an Art Adams classic New Mutants tale. The two stories both deal with Asgardians (chiefly the trickster god, Loki).

As the usual Claremont formula is, the X-characters sit around their mansion (or Danger Room, or sunbathing at the beach, etc.) and they get attacked by a baddie (why can't anyone ever leave these poor muties alone?). In this case, the baddie is Loki. In the first story, he offers the X-Men a chance to build a utopia with a price. In the second story, he kidnaps Storm to be his bride and also teleports the New Mutants to Asgard (their experiences in Asgard forever changes them). For longtime readers, these stories were especially rewarding - we have the first announcement that Madelyne Pryor was pregnant (with baby Cable), the first meeting of Rachel Summers with Scott Summers, the "slimming-down" of Karma, Dani Moonstar's transformation into a Valkyrie, Rahne Sinclair's meeting with the Wolf-Prince of Asgard, another Wolverine-Snowbird meeting, and the tragic story of a well-intentioned Madelyne Pryor (as Anodyne) trying to save her team-mates.

The moral of this story: Don't let false gods *bleep* with your lives. Especially if you're mutants!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous.......1999-10-30

What makes this book so good is the collection of characters. Probably the best X-Men team ever (perhaps for the exception of Rachel instead of Jean). Besides that: Colossus, Cyclops, Nightcrawler, Rogue, Shadowcat, Storm, and Wolverine. The story is very compelling, and the New Mutants play a key role as well. This is a *MUST HAVE* for any New Mutant fans as it is a pivotal point in the character developments of Mirage (Dani Moonstar) as well as Karma. Additionally, we get a very good glimpse of the different mutants personalities as each one has a miniature solo adventure as the plot begins to tie together. The storytelling is great, and the art is superb (especially for the era). I will note that the genre is more fantasy/mythology than typical superhero "street level" fare, but perhaps this is what makes it so alluring. My highest praises.

5 out of 5 stars This was one of the best X-men stories i've read........1998-06-05

This story ranks right up there with "DARK PHOENIX" and the "Mutant Massacre". It feature beautiful art by Arthur Adams, (whose art has never looked as good since)and Paul Smith, and an intricate story by Chris Claremont. It features two stories, one with the X-men and Alpha Flight going up against the Asgardian god of lies Loki, and one featuring the X-men and New Mutants trying to rescue Their leader Storm from Loki (who intends to turn her into his wife and use her to conquer Asgard). I highly recommend this story for anyone who is a fan of the X-men. This is one of the high points of Claremonts long run as X-men writer.

5 out of 5 stars Arthur Adams best work!.......1998-03-26

For any fan of comic art, this book is a must have. Arthur Adams attention to detail started a revolution in the mid-80's, and the medium has never been the same since. For X-men fans, this series of annuals showcases some facinating character development.

2 out of 5 stars Not recommended - much better books exist for understanding yourself & other people.......2007-10-07

Although the introductory chapter of this book started out promisingly enough, I've read half of the book and given up because I was so disappointed with it.

The book's introduction explains that it is based upon the DSV-IV - which is a manual which outlines 14 different types of personality disorders. This book sees each of those 14 personality disorders as extreme versions of 14 normal and healthy personalities.

Unfortunately when you read the personality portraits of each of the 14 supposedly normal and healthy personalities, you'll come to the conclusion that none of these personalities are normal or healthy at all. The book describes personalities which demonstrate behaviours which clearly would impede a person's ability to either hold down a job or form HEALTHY human relationships. All of the personality portraits describe people with problems of self-importance, selfishness and a lack of integrity in terms of their character - i.e. they just act the way they do, even if the way they act is hypocritical because they expect others to obey rules that they themselves blatantly ignore.

The advice and tips on dealing with each personality type amounts to walking on eggshells: i.e. "This is what makes this person react negatively, they cannot be anything different, therefore give them what they want or just avoid broaching that particular topic with them."

When I completed the personality self-portrait questionnaire and read the descriptions of the personalities that I supposedly had within me, I was horrified and outraged to think that the authors of the book (a) thought that I was like that and (b) that this was a normal and healthy representation of a person's personality!

If you are looking for books to read on self-improvement, I recommend books that emphasis self-awareness and understanding other people. Stephen Covey's book "The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People" is an excellent book that promotes self-awareness and how to develop leadership skills by developing a good character and leading by example.

In terms of understanding how people think, I recommend David Keirsey's book "Please Understand Me II". It's a revised edition of original "Please Understand Me" and explains 16 different personality types which are very different, often conflict, but are all healthy. You'll laugh when you read the descriptions of each personality type, because it will remind you either of yourself or someone you know.

As for this book, the "New Personality Self-Portrait", I would advise you avoid unless you're a psychology student who wants to learn more about people with personality disorders and how that extremeness manifests itself.

If you are a Baby Boomer, as I am, you will find books about knowing yourself endlessly fascinating. I didn't really learn anything new about myself but I enjoyed the narcissism of the whole process. This was a great way to spend a lazy afternoon.

    5 out of 5 stars A True Self Portrait.......2007-06-27

I love this assessment and the information it reveals. I would like it even better if it was on line. :-)

So I have had this book on my bookshelf for while. I am an avid collector of psychology books, fascinated by people and figuring out what makes us all tick.

So when I picked this book up AGAIN in my bookshelf and started the read the chapter on the Sensitive Style, something just clicked for me. It was one of those rare "AHA" moments where things just make sense.

I picked up this book to learn about other people but what I am learning about myself is incredible. I have decided to go back and cover the book slooooooooooowly....page by page....Highly Recommended Keeper!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Cordon Bleu on a beggar's budget.......2003-07-09

Lured by that damn'd hypnotic Gold Box into snapping up a natty rice cooker, it dawned on me that I didn't actually know what goes with rice, or how to cook it. Back to Amazon's ace 'search' function and voilà! This is the book I needed - and so might you.

    3 out of 5 stars it works..........2001-12-05

    The rice cooker book.
It's all about the "suihanki", as they call it in Japan. It is the focal point of any Japanese kitchen, and at any given moment, is full to the brim with boring white rice. They eat it for every meal, breakfast through to dinner and even as a late night 'snack'.
And using a rice cooker is easy. All you do is add rice and water and push a button.
Now, finally someone actually went into the kitchen and came up with some rather interesting, if not tasty recipes using the convenience of the rice cooker (it saves on cleanup tremendously) to create delicious meals.
Enough with the boring white rice, I say.
What's more, this cookbook provides recipes that have nothing to do with rice. It is the "other" steamer/oven-like-appliance that you never knew you had. Did you know you could use it to cook desserts, or even appetizers? It has vegetarian and meat-atarian meal ideas alike.
I found this book helpful because I have a small kitchen and I hate doing the dishes. In this book I found a few recipes I could make, that would make me appear to be a gourmet, a spectacular chef, without making a mess or putting much effort into the cooking process.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-06-24

What a delightful and informative book! As I've been able to do more diving and snorkling in SE Asia the past couple of years, identifying the underwater life has become a hobby as much as my love of birding. But I wanted to know more than just identification. This book is very readable and informative, suitable for adults and older children. The photographs are gorgeous and very clear. I'm reading it cover to cover. Many thanks to the Tacketts!

I have the complete set of books now and I really enjoy having the infromation so when I go diving in Cozumel each year it really helps me identify the different species. This really helps when you are one of the few that does not know it all.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Beautiful.......2003-07-19

This is a beautiful book with incredible pictures. Additionally it has very informative text. It is a great book for anyone with a serious interest in reefs & reef life.

5 out of 5 stars A must for the UW Photographer.......2002-05-03

I have been waiting for this book! Burt Jones got me focused on the 'one metre' dive a few years back and I've been enjoying macro critters and muck diving ever since. In this awsome new book, the Tacketts bring you their personal experiences with the macro world and incorportate a great deal of useful information which can help all of us better understand the interrelationships amongst all the critters. That understanding is one of the keys to making better images of the critters.

If you are a diver and you really want to get acquainted with the underwater world, stop swimming and start looking. And this book gives you step by step pointers on how to go about looking and helps you understand what you are seeing.

4 out of 5 stars much more than pretty pictures.......2002-04-23

The Tacketts have achieved something remarkable with this book. Not only is the quality of the photographs consistently high, but the detailed information within the text is logical and accessible to any diver whether they be experts in marine biology or simply curious fish watchers.
This American husband and wife team seem to have lived many divers dream existence. Travelling the Indo Pacific for 13 years, they would camp on a beach with their own compressor and make three dives a day collecting sponge specimens for medical research.
The scientific information is clear and broken down into digestible chunks, enlivened by well annotated pictures - everything from mantis shrimps eating coral shrimps, to frogfish camouflaged against cup corals. Predation, reproduction, camouflage, feeding and mimicry are all wonderfully explained. And, in keeping with the mood of the times there is a final section on reefs in danger - overfishing, cyanide, pollution etc, complete with appropriate photos including a poignant shot of an octopus trying to cover itself with a piece of broken plastic audio-cassette.
A substantial glossary at the end of the book covers everything from allelopathy to zooxanthellae.
The strength and value of this book is that it is not just a collection of good underwater images, I suspect it will become an invaluable primer for any diver who wants to look at reefs in an intelligent way.

5 out of 5 stars For Coin information -- THIS IS THE BEST.......2002-07-17

I've been a coin collector since I was 6 years old (1961). I'm not hard core like my brother, so I don't buy a Red Book every year, but I have a couple of them lying around the house. I still refer to them for mintage numbers and other technical info from time to time.

I've seen other coin guides and price lists, etc. and they all pale in comparison to the "Red Book".

Get this one. It's the best.

5 out of 5 stars Novice opinion: concise, thorough.......2002-01-03

Handy, convenient, and more reliable than the internet. Together with a currency guide, this is all most people would ever need. My latest copy was 13 years old, so I figured it was time to break down and get a new one.

A good guide to see what dealers will SELL you coins for. This is not what you will get if try to sell your coins.

    3 out of 5 stars expected a newer edition.......2001-09-25

The 58th edition is out, I expected a newer edition than the 54th edition I received.

4 out of 5 stars Comparative review of 2002 edition vs. 2001 edition.......2001-09-17

The 2002 edition of the red book is so similar to the 2001 edition, even Amazon's computer seems too pool the reviews together. The casual collector probably should not invest in the 2002 edition if they have the 2001 or even 2000 edition. Regular collectors will want it simply for the updated mintage figures or price guides. I would encourage any new collector to pick up a copy, because it is an excellent reference to have handy.
The book continues the annual trend of replacing black and white photos with color (particularly in the gold coin section), to generally positive ends. Oddly, the 1797 plain edge half cent photo has vanished. A glaring omission is the absence photos of the 2000 state quarters, particularly given the fact that there are two blank pages set aside for future state quarters listings, and all the 2000 mintage figures are included. Since that the primary value of the redbook is as a reference, Bressett has overlooked an important addition that should have appeared. On a positive note, a very helpful open wreath image has been added for the 1849 gold dollar.
Some minor modifications and additions exist in the commemorative section, and a great photograph of some gold from the S.S. Central America has been added, which is very appropriate given the magnitude of the find.
The redbook continues its trend as a very handy reference, but it is difficult to justify the exclusion of five new coin designs, costing the 2002 edition a star.

i found this book interesting to read. but i do not think that it is as helpful as i was lead to believe in reading the other reviews. the stories tend to be rather vague as far as information wise. also the book seems to be a bit outdated. but i did find the reference section at the end of each chapter helpful, it's nice to have a starting point. and a book that gives pointers on some persons and companies to contact in order to learn more. i did find myself a little dissapointed, which probably wouldn't have happened if the book wasn't so touted.

5 out of 5 stars Very interesting read!.......2004-07-03

I found this book to be both very interesting and educational as well as just plain "down-to-earth". It makes you realize that you can do it too!

I really liked the reference pages that were included at the end of each chapter. You can either go to your library and look things up, call or get websites.

    Very good book.

        Book Description

A real-life detective story of the ancient world with overwhelming implications for the modern one.

        • Explores the Native American legend of the 13 crystal skulls said to hold the keys to future earth changes and humankind's destiny.

        • By independent filmmakers Chris Morton and Ceri Louise Thomas, whose A&E documentary on the crystal skulls has won high acclaim in the United States and abroad.

        • Over 100,000 sold worldwide.

Native American legend tells of 13 life-size crystal skulls said to contain crucial information about humankind's true purpose and destiny. The legend prophesied that at a time of great crisis for humanity, all of the crystal skulls would be rediscovered and brought together to reveal information vital to the very survival of the human race. The authors first heard of this legend while in the jungles of Central America and, after a real crystal skull was discovered in a Mayan city, set out on a quest to discover the truth behind this mystery.

The Mystery of the Crystal Skulls follows their journey from the ancient temples of the Maya to the British Museum, the Smithsonian, and to the crystal laboratories of Hewlett-Packard, where sophisticated scientific tests on the skull--made from the same quartz crystal used in today's computers--lead to the conclusion, "This skull shouldn't even exist." These scientific tests have raised many questions: Are the skulls really information storage devices that allow us to tap deep into the past and predict the future? Are they artifacts from the lost civilization of Atlantis or are they extraterrestrial in origin? Their journey also leads to Native shamans and elders who reveal the sacred knowledge and vital information that these skulls hold about coming earth changes and humanity's imminent destiny.

Wow!!!! Great Book! I went to Mexico last year and visited Chichenitza and heard the stories of the crystal skulls and was entriged. This book (based on facts)takes you on an adventure of how some of the skulls were found and the effects they have on people. The history and native beliefs and also how scientifically; they are an enigma. I couldn't put this book down and I'm usually one of those people who starts to read and falls asleep in the middle of a chapter.... Not this book!!! It's great!! I highly recommend!!

3 out of 5 stars Perhaps the most comprehensive book on the subject.......2006-06-20

This book often reads like a great adventure novel; however, at some points inthe story it can essentially be considered as such. This is a wonderful view into the world of the crystal skulls, and it is well worth the investment to anyone who chooses to work with these sacred tools. This is also a valuable book to any advanced stoudent of any application of crystals.

5 out of 5 stars The Mystery Ends In 2012.......2005-08-31

This is an excellent book for those with a peaked interest in the interconnection of all people and our pasts. Or in laymen terms Crystal Skulls. This book takes a very broad examination of a very expansive subject. It does explore the most common beliefs/concepts about the skull, not just popular or scientific. They really combed the world to ask the right people. From Native American shaman to top level scientists working for Hewlett Packard when they conducted scientific tests on the Mitchell-Hedges Skull in 1970.

Excellent bibliography, an excellent beginning to a quality bookcase.

5 out of 5 stars Everyone In The World Should Read This Book.......2005-08-28

It's a wonderful surprise when you pick up a book not knowing much about it and it turns out to be so great. That's what happened to me with this book.

Just by reading this one book you can get caught up on the entire new age movement. It touches on many of the main new age ideas.

It also offers a possible theory for the origin of our human race including the time when our dna was converted from a single strand to two strands which contain the memories of both the original earth people and the star people.

These crystal skulls, especially the original 13 that were given to humanity by beings from other planets, are exquisite and priceless works of art. But they are much more. When they have been brought back together they will become an amazing 'living library' of ancient and arcane knowledge.

These skulls can truly be called sacred objects. It is not often that a physical object can be said to possess supernatural properties.

The big question is what is going to happen on 12/21/12 when this current age ends.

Will we enter a new age of peace and wonderous knowledge ?

Or will our human race simply die out as a result of pollution, greed, and violence ? This book has been published at this time to hopefully prevent this from happening.

Only time will tell and we don't have too long to wait.

        Jeff Marzano

I loved this book! It is filled with fascinating stories and information concerning something very concrete. It flows beautifully and holds you with ease. The Native American angle is especially intriguing. In the end, of course, you end up wanting more to sink your teeth into. But that is the curse of a great read.

        Book Description

King Arthur and the Holy Grail, the lost tomb of Alexander the Great, ancient scripts, and the story of Atlantis: the human past is full of unsolved mysteries. The Seventy Great Mysteries of the Ancient World draws on modern science and the latest research to explore some of archaeology's most baffling controversies and enigmas, from our origins and evolution to the mysterious collapse of once-powerful civilizations. Leading authorities discuss the key questions, beginning with the truth behind myths and legends. Was there ever a Garden of Eden? Did the flood in Genesis actually occur? What became of the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel? And what is the significance of the Aboriginal Dreamtime? The book then examines mysteries of the Stone Age: the beginnings of language, the fate of the Neanderthals, and the meaning of cave paintings. The enigma of the European megaliths is addressed, and the question of whether there was ever a mother goddess cult. The ancient civilizations present equally fascinating puzzles: were the Egyptians black Africans, and how did Tutankhamun die? And mysteries are found in all parts of the globe: did the Olmecs originate in Africa, were the Bog People of northern Europe murder victims, why did the Incas sacrifice children, and what was the purpose of the world-famous Nazca lines? The book pays close attention to puzzling sepulchers like Tomb 55 in Egypt's Valley of the Kings—possibly the pharaoh Akhenaten's burial place—and to undeciphered scripts, from Cretan Linear A to Etruscan, runes, and rongorongo. Finally, it examines the controversies surrounding the collapse of such civilizations as the Minoan, the Maya, and the Moche of lowland Peru. Packed with diagrams, photographs, plans, and maps, The Seventy Great Mysteries of the Ancient World is a unique guide to some of the most contentious issues of the human past, offering a completely up-to-date account of mysteries that fascinate us all. 431 illustrations, 177 in color.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating look at the mysteries of humanity's past........2004-08-30

This well organized, informative and concise volume offers a clearly written collection of essays on seventy of man's most famous historical enigmas and archaeological mysteries, from humanity's origin to the disappearance of mighty empires.
Each controversy is carefully detailed in a short entry of two to five pages long that explains all that is presently known about each topic drawing on the latest discoveries made through modern science and archaeological research. Each puzzling subject is presented in the manner of a question, followed by basic information that includes dates, facts, stories, scientific research, current level of knowledge, and theories to possible solutions. Moreover, for quick check-ups, each enigma is accurately placed in one of the six categories into which the book is divided: Myths & Legends; Mysteries of the Stone Age; Ancient Civilizations; Tombs & Lost Treasures; Ancient & Undeciphered Scripts; and The Fall of Civilizations.
This reference is handsomely presented in a sturdy binding, printed in top-quality paper, and beautifully illustrated with over 400 spectacular photos, explanatory diagrams and detailed historical drawings.
Featured among the showcased selection are King Arthur and the Holy Grail, Stonehenge, the Riddle of the Sphinx, the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Etruscan Alphabet, the Trojan War, and the Collapse of the Maya. The rest of the subjects included are equal examples of real controversies, unsolved mysteries and baffling enigmas of humanity's past. No paranormal or supernatural phenomena are presented or considered as possible theories to the solution of any controversy.
As a bonus, the book includes a preface that explains the criteria used to pick the selected topics, and an introduction that gives us an overview of how science and research shed light into finding satisfactory answers to these historical questions. Also included are a comprehensive bibliography and list of illustrations, especially useful for further research, and a thorough index for specific consultations.
This is a fact-filled compendium that readers of all ages will undoubtedly refer to again and again.

2 out of 5 stars Superficial sweeping ..........2002-09-02

It is a good coffee table book. If you really want to learn, then this book is not for you...it is merely a diving board to propel you to more serious, detailed writings. It is a brief reference, which if used for this purpose, is not bad at all.

        4 out of 5 stars A good starting point.......2002-05-20

More of an encyclopedia of short entries concerning unsolved historical/archaeological mysteries than anything else, this book nonetheless provides enough general information to initiate those new to these ongoing debates. It also works well for people like me, who have read endlessly about some of these topics but sometimes need to look up a generality or a name associated with a particular subject. Most of the entries are concise and informative enough to provoke further reading, and the writing style is engaging and maintains interest. It covers most of the basic subjects (the development of language and writing, the Pyramids and the Sphinx, Atlantis) and a few more "obscure" ones: The Land of Punt, Mithraism, Tiwanaku (from my experience, these seem to come up short in other, similar books). (From here, one might look to "Ancient Mysteries" by James and Thorpe, which offers fewer topics but is incredibly well-researched and detailed). Good work.

        5 out of 5 stars Fascinating Read.......2002-04-13

I have always enjoyed books about mysterious events of the past, unknown civilizations, strange happenings, etc. This book is full of such items. The Seventy Great Mysteries of the Ancient World looks at some of these mysteries through the eyes of modern archaeology and other sciences to try to resolve at least some of the questions surrounding them. Each item is subjected to a scientific analysis of the knowledge that we have obtained to date. Generally, the situation ends up being exactly what it has been in the past... an unresolved mystery.
Lavishly illustrated, it is written in a conversational style that is easy to read and understand. Logically divided into appropriate sections it starts with Myths and Legends, moves to Mysteries of the Stone Age, then to Ancient Civilizations, Tombs and Lost Treasures, Ancient and Undeciphered Scripts and the Fall of Civilizations. The only thing that I did not like about the book was the short treatment of each item. With seventy chapters (one for each of the mysteries) and roughly 300 pages that is only an average of four pages per mystery. However, at the back of the book is an extensive listing of references to consult for further information on each of the items. For those who like a complete synopsis of each mystery and the current level of knowledge this is excellent. A fascinating book, it covered not only the mysteries that I was aware of but also many that I had never heard of before. If there is one book that I would suggest to gain a basic knowledge of the greatest mysteries of the Ancient World then this one would be it.

This ambitious tome compiles a compendium of surveys about many sometimes contentious topics, mostly from ancient history. A large number of scholars contributed in most cases one of the articles. Therein lies its shortcoming. While that would seem to insure that an "expert" provided the information about each topic, it also leaves the reader with a mixed bag of quality. Some of them are excellent, well researched, even handed and objective. Others are "party line" propaganda that ignore evidence to the contrary. None of it is wild eyed, new age [stuff], though, so it has that much going for it. It's a worthwhile buy as a basic list, but a scholarly reader should use it as a starting point for further research rather than the final word.

          Book Description

Recent scientific breakthroughs make it possible to know what people looked like in China 500,000 years ago, or how tribes reared their children in Texas 8,000 years ago, or how priestesses performed sacrifices 1,600 years ago. You've probably heard of the "Iceman" of 3,000 B.C. who was found almost perfectly preserved in a glacier. That's only the beginning--you can see artists' drawings and read expert explanations about what it was like to be a warrior queen in 500 B.C., a Roman sailor in the time of Christ, or a teenager who died in the wars of the Roses. Know--and see--how your ancestors ate, dressed, built their homes and villages, worshipped, played games, and made war and love.

                    Book Description

Joanne Higginson's story reveals the plight of many Korean/American children who were abandoned after the U.S. withdrew from Korea after the Korean war.Jeff Higginson her husband, was a product of a wartime romance between a U.S. married captain and a young Korean women enamored with the kindness and generosity that she did not know before her American hero. After Jeff was merely two months old, this Army captain would leave Korea after the Korean war ended, returning only one more time to assist the Korean women he onced loved when she became ill.As he grew up, Jeff would never know his birth father, this American GI, and would witness his mother struggle to keep him to no avail. She would have to give him up for adoption to America at the age of seven because there, she knew,Jeff would have a better life than what she could provide because he was very American looking and was not accepted in the Korean Society. His eyes were too round.More than thirty years later,Joanne Higginson shares with us her three year journey to reconnect her husband with his birth mother and father, a reunion to heal the wounds of war rather than ignore the trauma of separation and loss.
