Book Description
There's a powerful, new voice coming from out of the American West and his name is Craig Johnson. In his debut novel Johnson brings to life the vast Wyoming landscape, its people, and a wonderful new character in Sheriff Walt Longmire.
The citizens of the Cowboy State boast a long and bloody history of dispensing rough justice but the last few decades have bred peace between the white and Native American communities. So when Cody Pritchard is found dead near the Northern Cheyenne Reservation, Sheriff Walt Longmire and the general population of Absaroka County are inclined to think it's a hunting accident. But two years earlier Cody was one four high school boys convicted of brutally raping Melissa Little Bird, a young Cheyenne girl with fetal alcohol syndrome. The boys were guilty but let off with suspended sentences. Was this a revenge killing? Sheriff Longmire intends to find out.
After twenty-four years as sheriff, Walt, along with Deputy Victoria Moretti and lifelong friend Henry Standing Bear, is embroiled in the most volatile and challenging case of his career. He might be the only thing standing between the three remaining boys and a Sharps .45-70 buffalo rifle.
In the first book of this new series, Wyoming resident Craig Johnson fills the vast emptiness of the high plains with a cast both tragic and humorous and brings a unique landscape and its people to life with mesmerizing authenticity.

Major New Talent.......2007-05-18
Walt Longmire, a Wyoming county sheriff in Bighorn Mountain country, is faced with a complex murder case, where the convicted rapists of a challenged Cheyenne girl are being murdered one by one. Top of the suspect list is Walt's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, who happens to own one of the rare buffalo guns of the type used in the murders. Walt doesn't have much help in the investigation: Only the retired sheriff, a one-legged crusty legend now in a nursing home; a sullen, dark deputy with a penchant for beating up drunks; and a foul-mouthed femme-fatale deputy who has a crush on him. Can Walt count on his best friend Henry Standing Bear, or is Henry the killer. The outcome of the rape trial didn't set well in the Cheyenne community. Some Cheyenne don't believe Walt did all he could.
I don't know where I picked up this book, but I'm sure glad I did. Craig Johnson is one of the most talented and refreshing new talents I've come across in years. I was so impressed with this book, I've recommended it to all my reading friends and I ordered Johnson's other two books. Craig Johnson has the potential to become the next James Lee Burke, and for that I am extremely grateful. Writers such as Burke and Johnson don't come along often.
Best first novel I've ever read.......2007-04-23
I thought Craig started The Cold Dish a bit slow but the characters were amusing enough I kept reading and soon enough the plot took off. I didn't want to put it down and I didn't want it to end. As soon as I finished I went back online to Amazon and bought his other two because Sheriff Walt has become a favorite character and I don't want to miss single minute.
This book simply got stronger and more interesting with each page. From the vivid scenery to the touches of Native American culture and hints of mysticism it was a triumph. These characters will touch you.
I'm a writer myself with one book here at Amazon The Towers Of Greed and another coming out this fall and I have to tell you I think The Cold Dish is an extraordinary first book. Oh, and if you check out my own book linked above please buy it from Whitebear54 as that is me.
'The Cold Dish' is a gem of a first novel .......2006-06-28
Discovering a wonderful new author is a special treat for readers, and Craig Johnson's 'The Cold Dish' is especially delicious. Set in a fictional small town in northern Wyoming and featuring grieving, 50-something widower Sheriff Walt Longmire, the book is a beautifully crafted mystery that will hold your attention from the first page. A marvelous supporting cast of eccentric locals including Longmire's best friend, Henry Standing Bear, both assist and hinder the Sheriff as he makes his way through a maze of suspects to solve a grisy series of murders. By the last chapter of this terrific first novel, the reader will feel that he, too, knows the starkly beautiful country at the foot of the Big Horn mountains. A guaranteed great read!
Such a good read........2006-06-05
This book has delightful descriptions of Wyoming and the Big Horns. And add to that characters that captured my interest from the first page to the last. I felt like I was catching up with some old friends and making new friends. I am now reading Craig's new book and look forward to his third and fourth!
This is such a good read!
Pretty Darn Palatable.......2006-04-20
Being in the book business, I'm always on the lookout for the next big thing, the kind of author with so much talent and drive that anyone who buys one of their works will be back the next day to buy the rest. I've seen writers like Lee Child and Michael Connelly go from buzz to best seller, and I love that brief window of opportunity when I can hand sell a relatively unknown author I know will knock people out.
Craig Johnson is a new voice that his publisher Penguin believes can become the next Hillerman. Both Craig and Penguin have sent our bookshop posters, postcards and various promotional items (word to the wise - chocolate and money work best) in order to bring him to the attention of our customers. Johnson's protagonist is Walt Longmire, an aging, small town sheriff in Wyoming. (The aging thing is always a poignant touch, but it can get awkward when it's the starting point in a continuing series - those Vietnam vets aren't going to be able to keep punching people out for very much longer.) Walt's rather pedestrian duties are suddenly enlivened by the death of a young man who had been involved in the gang rape of a Native American girl. When a second guilty party is also killed it becomes apparent that the first death was no accident, and unless the crimes are solved the town could explode.
Longmire is a likeable, gruff and very decent character, a man just emerging from mourning the death of his long time wife, and the reader is drawn effortlessly into his world. Johnson skillfully immerses the reader in the rhythms and mores of the West, smoothly integrating history and folklore into the evocative landscape. Like Hillerman, he captures the dangerous beauty of the area as well as the equally dangerous tensions between the Native Americans and the rest of the community.
I found the middle of the book less compelling, however. Small town policing can get pretty tedious at times, and it's challenging to present that in a way that's true to life yet maintains the pace of the book, a challenge that Johnson's not always up to. I also found some of the characters like the-pithy-member-of-a-minority-best-friend and the-beautiful-rich-woman-known-in-childhood-from-the-other-side-of-the-class-divide to be a little stock.
But the sting is in the tail, as they say, and for me Johnson's ending more than redeemed any reservations I may have had, and in fact turned some of them on their head. He delivers the kind of kick ass, gut wrenching, truly surprising resolution that not too many writers can pull off these days, and it immediately made me yearn for Death Without Company, the next book in the series. Craig Johnson may not be the next big thing, but he'll definitely do until it comes along.

Wonderful End to a Great Trilogy!.......2003-10-24
Tristan, apprentice wizard and newly crowned King of Calandra should have been able to rest on his laurels. After all, he had found the ring of Allaire and woken the sleeping princess, winning her as his bride and then he found the lost sword of Calandra, which enabled him to be crowned. But with Nimir, Lord of Winter, Ice & Storm, determined to take over all of the continent, Tristan knew that he had to so something before his beautiful land turned into a land of frost and snow. With his beloved Elisena by his side, as well as a few faithful companions, Tristan set out to do the impossible - confront Nimir on his own ground. Throughout his adventures, Tristan would make new friends, confront old enemies, and accomplish the impossible while failing at simple tasks all while Nimir waited on his mountain, plotting and planning his next attack...
This is the wonderful conclusion to Dexter's The Winter War trilogy begun with The Ring of Allaire and The Sword of Calandra. Tristan is such a great character to get to know and I felt like I knew him and was learning and growing with him while I was reading about his adventures. Susan Dexter really made me care for her characters and I am sad that the adventure is over, but I know that I will go back and reread and reenjoy this trilogy for many years to come! If you enjoy fantasy at all, you definitely should check out this series as it has all of the hallmarks of classic fantasy at its best.
Excellent end to a trilogy.......1999-04-16
This entire series is on my bookshelf, and I reread it about every three years or so. Susan Dexter spins an excellent tale, and I like the way her characters mature during the course of the books. The first two books are "The Ring of Allaire" and "The Sword of Callandra"
The Mountains of Channadran is the final episode of the quest against the lord of ice and storm. Tristan and his small group must finally take the battle to Nimir if they are to secure any peace for their land.
Dexter does the story well, with many small details that lend that necessary depth to a good read. I highly recomend this book.
Book Description
There are dozens of books about managing diabetes, but none focuses specifically on using insulin. Now, in Think Like a Pancreas, certified diabetes educator and type 1 insulin user Gary Scheiner gives readers everything they need to know to “think like a pancreas,” i.e., to successfully master the art of matching insulin to the body’s ever-changing needs. A comprehensive, supremely practical guide free of medical mumbo jumbo, Think Like a Pancreas discusses day-to-day blood glucose control and monitoring; measuring and matching insulin to carbohydrate intake; the pluses and minuses of different insulin-delivery methods; hypoglycemia; exercise; the impact of emotions, stress, and illness; and the dozens of other issues that everyone taking insulin needs to master. A book that is long overdue, this first-ever, indispensable, all-in-one resource will enlighten and inspire the four million people whose lives and well-being depend on daily insulin intake.

Think Like A Pancreas.......2007-08-26
This book is a must for anyone with Diabetes, either Type I or II.Think Like a Pancreas: A Practical Guide to Managing Diabetes with Insulin Until the day there is an implantable artifical pancreas for those in need of "a good working one", we must "think like" a pancreas to help meet our insulin needs. This publication helps the Diabetic have more of a sense of what logical assumptions to make about how a pancreas works and how you and your medical team can "tweak" your care plan for ultimate success. I highly recommend this for those of us that are "pancreas challenged".
Great all around book.......2007-06-02
This book is great. Comprehensive, yet easy to read. Very good practical information with nice handy references in the back. I only wish it was more current. Even a couple of years makes a difference in the world of diabetes. Nonetheless I am glad to have this in my library and intend to refer to it often.
Worth more than 5 stars.......2007-04-29
After reading this book going on the 3rd time, I am still discovering more and more ways to improve my insulin regimine. I was diagnosed as a Type I diabetic 06/82 at the age of 13 months old. I will be 26 in two weeks and have maintained acceptable control but felt that I truly haven't gotten to where I want my health to be. After reading hands on information in this text, I am happy with producing an HbA1C of 6.7%, and I look forward to bringing it closer to 6% as possible. This comes after maintaining a 7-8% average over the course of many years and thanfully there have not been any long-term consequences "yet".
To anyone that feels they need some additional help with control, wants to refresh themselves on care methods, or anyone recently diagnosed I would recommend this book to. It is imformative, it is easy to read, and the overall context is a very laid back approach with a semi-humorus attitude at times. My girlfriend just finished reading this book and is already helping me with fine tuning my basal and bolus rates. I firmly believe that with all of this in mind, this book is worth more than it's weight in gold.
Think like a Pancreas.......2007-01-05
I have been a diabetic for over twenty-eight years and have read many books on diabetes through the years. This book , has by far, been the most informative, easiest to comprehend, and I found it quite fascinating. There are many new things to learn. A definite read for any diabetic who wants to keep on top of things. Gary Scheiner really understands the needs of the diabetic. He provides them with skill, knowledge and real integrity. Thank you.

Practical and straightforward.......2006-08-07
A direct approach, with illustrative examples, to creating a protocol to control your blood sugars. It's written in simple language and well organized, providing a step by step approach to figuring out your basal rates, insulin sensitivity, and carb ratios. Provides insights into the many, many, many (many, many, many) factors that can influence your blood sugars. Well thought out and presented graphs illustrate the effects of insulin. Simple tables illustrate averages for basal rates, boluses, carb rations and sensitivity, offering a good starting place for divining your own settings. Some simple tables of carb content and glycemic indexes. An interesting table for calculating the effect of exercise on blood sugar.
I'd recommend for anyone who's BG is on a roller coaster. It's informative but not preachy.

Must Have!.......2006-03-23
I love this book. I am also a registered dietitian and have not only used this book for my own children, but I have given this book as a baby shower gift. It's perfect for a first time mom. This is the only book that I have run across that tells you exactly how much to feed a baby, from ounces of formula to servings of first solids.
Very Helpful and Informative!!.......2005-11-09
I actually won this book at the American Baby Faire in Chicago this weekend after she gave a talk. This book is actually very helpful and informative. My daughter is starting soilds and it gave ideas and meal plans that I can give to her sitter. I would recommend this book to anyone who has a child that is about to or is starting soilds.
Not Just A Cookbook.......2005-06-10
When I got this book I thought it would give me a lot of quick and nutritional meals for my family, but the author covered so much more. She covered nutritional balance; allergies; and how to change your family's current habits. I was very pleased. Also, I was pleased that even as a dietition she recognized that not everyone has the time to devote to meal planning. I would much rather spend time laughing and playing with my children. This comes from a woman who planned on being that perfect stay at home hippie type mother.
Don't let the title of this book fool you!!!!.......2004-12-09
Don't let the title of this book fool you. Sure, it may include recipes with all of the four food groups, but take caution.....
they are not presented in the most wholesome and healthful ways. For example, whole grain breads piled with chocolate chips, lentil chilis flavoured with dry onion soup mix, desserts made with instant pudding mixes, soups made with canned soup (I still don't understand that concept - if you are going to make a homemade soup from scratch, why spoil it with canned soup?!) I could go on and on, but the underlying theme of this book is somewhat healthy food mixed with highly processed convenience foods. This may be good for some families, but I am choosing not to feed her food to my children. For families that are choosing not to feed meat to their children for various reasons (my 19 month old twins don't like the taste of meat and have chosen the vegetarian path on their own), this book offers no alternatives to the traditional "meat and potatoes" type meal. There is not one tofu recipe in this book at all. Plus, she only includes a handful of inadequate bean and lentil recipes. Boy, is she ever missing the big picture! Now is the time to develop good, healthy eating habits with our children (whether they are 2 or 12). We need to make every bite count nutritionally for our children, especially since the incidence of childhood obesity is on the rise. Snacks are just as important for your children as meals and they should be taken seriously. Bridget Swinney's suggestions for snack food are crunch munch mix(popcorn, pretzels, dressing mix) or dirt cake (instant pudding, whipped topping, cookie crumbs, gummy worms). Who would feed this to their kids on a regular basis? How about fresh fruit and vegetables or homemade muffins and loaves for snacks? Our families deserve the best and because of this, we should be feeding our children as well as ourselves more natural, wholesome foods. Don't assume that because they are natural and wholesome that these foods don't taste good. For a much more appropriate cookbook that addresses good nutrition with a major emphasis on good, wholesome, natural foods, try Shelly Null's "Healthy Cooking for Kids: Building Blocks for a Lifetime of Good Nutrition". Although, it is almost a completely vegan cookbook, her approach and her recipes will build a strong foundation for a lifetime of good nutrition and health. This book definately gets five stars. As for Bridget Swinney's book, the only reason that she got one star was because zero stars was not an option for rating this horrible cookbook. I am sending this book back to Amazon tomorrow with no regrets.
INVALUABLE RESOURCE.......2004-03-09
I actually won this book at the American Baby Faire in Atlanta last year after the author gave a talk. It is an invaluable resource that I refer back to time after time. I especially valued the information on bottle feeding, and how to introduce solids. The first few chapters that included information on cancer, pesticides, etc. were also very helpful. I have recommended this book to other new moms who were just as happy with it. Because I've been so happy with this book, I plan on buying Swinney's book "Eating Expectantly" for my next pregnancy.

Product Description
The Joy of TeX is the user-friendly guide to AMSTeX, a software package based on the computer typesetting language TeX. AMSTeX was designed to simplify typesetting of mathematical quantities, equations, and displays, and to format the output according to any of various preset style specifications. This second edition of Joy reflects the changes introduced on Version 2.0 of the AMSTeX macro package. The first two parts of the manual, "Starters" and "Main Courses", teach the reader how to typeset the kind of text and mathematics one ordinarily encounters. "Sauces and Pickles", the third section, treats more exotic problems and includes a 60-page dictionary of special TeXniques. The manual also includes descriptions of conventions of mathematical typography to help the novice technical typist. Appendices list handy summaries of frequently used and more esoteric symbols. This manual is useful for technical typists as well as scientists who prepare their own manuscripts. For the novice, exercises sprinkled generously throughout each chapter encourage the reader to sit down at a terminal and learn through experimentation.
Customer Reviews:
A Good Example of TeX Writing.......2007-01-19
Since Spivak macros have been ported to LaTeX (the AMS LaTeX collection), people rarely use AMSTeX. Therefore this book ceased to be important as a primary textbook or a reference. Nevertheless it would be a shame for it to become forgotten. Written with typical Spivak's subtle humor (the book gently mocks both The Joy of Cooking and The Joy of Sex), it introduces important concepts of TeX and mathematical typesetting. It is one of the rare books that explain not just HOW, but also WHY. It would be enjoyable both for a TeX gourmet and a technical writer interested in the way Spivak is able to explain difficult things in simple terms.
Terrific Source for Learning AMS-TeX.......2000-03-27
Spivak's appealing and original book makes learning TeX much more fun than it really should be! If you are already familiar with some flavor of TeX, this is a great book for becoming proficient with AMS-TeX quickly. If not, then there is enough introductory material to make you familiar with the basics of TeX typesetting first. To me AMS-TeX is preferrable to LaTeX (commands are more suggestive and easier to use) and this book is the best AMS-TeX handbook available.
Book Description
This concise biography of Ceacute;sar Chaacute;vez documents the life of one of the most important labor organizers of the last half of the 20th century-a reformer and activist who personified the American struggle for democracy. His story is told through an evocative biographical essay accompanied by several types of documents: Chaacute;vez in his own words, Chaacute;vez in the words of his contemporaries, Chaacute;vez as seen by historians in a group of secondary sources, and finally a visual portfolio of 20 photographs and cartoons. The secondary sources focus on critical questions about the labor unions he helped to found and the impact he made on the Chicano population as well as the rest of the world. All of the materials are accompanied by a helpful chronology, bibliographic essay, and questions for consideration.
