    Book Description

When Colombian Arias Cuevas is caught trying to smuggle drugs through Venice airport, his fear isn't fuelled by the idea of prison. He's much more frightened of his aunt—it was her coke he took off with. The cops set up a sting to find out who was to be the recipient of the drugs, and art smuggler Nazzareno Corradi falls straight into the trap. But he's been set up. His lawyer hires "the Alligator," and his fixer, Max, to find out what's going on. Soon it becomes apparent why Cuevas was so afraid—the aunt, La Tia, has left a bloody trail in her wake, is now looking to do some business in Italy, and she's not about to let anybody get in her way.

Nifft the Lean comprises four novelettes featuring Nifft, a gaunt thief. That Nifft is a 'gaunt thief' is all we really ever learn about him, as the stories aren't really about Nifft, but the places he visits. Each of the four stories are exceedingly visual, with a dash of Hollywood over-the-top flair. Shea had several locations and a few cool things he wanted to show us: the underworld and how it operates (twice), a monster-infested swamp, and two giants - one dead and one reawakening. Unfortunately, the frame of stories around them were simple, if not weak. Where Shea excels is the writing itself, which was beautifully said and exceptionally vivid. In the two underworld stories, Shea leans heavily toward the grotesque. Nifft the Lean is not a serious book, nor does it pretend to be, but it's not exactly light reading either.

I rarely review a book, but I am compelled to review this one. This book so captivated me from the beginning, that I was shocked at how deeply involved in the story, characters, and description I became. It was hypnotic.

First, the author has almost a Tolkien-like ability for description, without losing his sense of pacing. Imagine suddenly waking up in a strange room and your mind races to absorb the details. What made this book succeed where most others fail, was the bridge from the recognizable to the comicly foreign and demented. Too often fantasy writers just expect the reader to follow them into their artificial world that looks all-too-familiar. Expect to be blown away with Nifft. Its that dusty attic door you were always too afraid to open. Nifft opens it for you, and pushes you in, but comes along for support.

Second, the characters. Again, I refer to Tolkien only to say this book is decidedly un-Tolkienlike in that there are very few characters. The two main characters (Nifft and his friend Barnar) have quite a bit of dialog. They joke with each other, get on each other's nerves, anger each other, and sacrifice themselves for the other. Somehow, Shea has included a very nice "buddy" story amid the horrors of imagination. Never seen it before, and it works beautifully.

Third, the imagination of Shea is almost too wild to comprehend. Who would of thought sneaking into Hell with your buddy would be so shocking and revolting, yet so much fun? Shea struck a perfect balance between dread and absurdity. Its as if he took the dare other fantasy writers wouldn't take, and blew through the artificial ceiling of "fantastical" thought.

As I recall, this book is actually four separate stories. This works actually better than one very large novel as it gives broader scope to the characters. Things take place in different times and places. My personal favorite is "Fishing in the Demon Sea". I still have memories of it, even though its been a few years.

This book really isn't SF or Fantasy. Its literature. Its high-level reading. If you can survive the opening chapters, you'll love the book. Unfortunately, I now have a much higher standard for authors who attempt new realities. You will find many other authors utterly fail to live up to your new standards after you read this book. That's okay, competition is good. I just wish Shea would write more.

              5 out of 5 stars It's a shame really..........1999-03-17

As I sit here gazing fondly at my musty, yellowed first edition DAW paperback of 'Nift the Lean' (did this book Ever come out in hardcover?), I still remember skulking up to the check out counter in a fashionably cool NYC bookstore in early '83. My companion did not want to be seen with me while I purchased this book because the cover art was 'embarassingly bad'. Well, his loss, because after reading a few paragraphs, I didn't care if there was dog's doo on the cover - I was buying it! Not a single review or word of praise was on the back or inside the cover. But someone else must have braved the snotty bookstore clerks, because, low and behold, next thing you know, it wins the world fantasy award. (My companion eats some serious crow, here.)

I've read a lot of fantasy (and science fiction, and science fantasy) over the years. Very few books in this genre hold a candle to Nift. Was there ever a story richer, more inventive or more delightfully horrifying than 'Fishing in the Demon-Sea'? Was there ever a character in all of dark fantasy as strange and evocative as the Privateer? Or an action sequence with more edge-or-your-seat excitement than the hell-ride down the mine shaft? (Did Steven Spielberg read this story before he made 'Temple of Doom' - you bet he did.)

After so many years it is baffling to come here and find that this book is still not recognized for a classic of dark fantasy. That it is Still out of print. All I can say is get your hands on a stinky, dog-eared copy of this book and read it - you can't have mine!

5 out of 5 stars Sword&Sorcery on par w/ Moorcock and Leiber; a thief in hell.......1997-06-05

How many books have you read that begin with a eulogy for the title character? _Nifft the Lean_ starts with a promise of hard-edged, high-intensity dark fantasy, and then delivers in four masterful novelettes.

Set in a lurid, bizarre world reminiscent of Jack Vance's "Dying Earth", these stories relate how Nifft and various partners wager their very souls in the course of pursuing their "art". With atmosphere surpassing that of even the greatest masters of dark fantasy, Shea matches eerie visions with sheer horror to create his own flavor of sword and sorcery.

Shea is able to create a character in Nifft that transcends the common fantasy stereotypes often found in second rate fiction and role-playing game supplements. Nifft and his main partner, Barnar, are not tricksters, silly picaros, or slinking alley trash; they are mercenary hereos with their own amoral code of honor. Like Howard's Conan, and Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser, Shea's characters are the kind of men who show disdain for wealth by stealing a fortune and then drinking it all away. The cosmology of Nifft's world is reminiscent of that found in the ancient epics of Gilgamesh, or Homer, where a man must strive to live boldly and well, since no paradise lies beyond death.

Where Shea truly shines is in his powers of description. Nifft, Barnar and the other characters tromp through a chaotic landscape rife with gruesome detail. Vivid settings, such as those encountered in the Land of Death, or the first Demon Subworld, are not easily forgotten. Shea also makes masterful use of perspective: one story being narrated by Nifft himself, others being third person accounts, or first person narrations by friends of Nifft, pretending to be Nifft... All in all, Shea provides us with a great variety of narrative styles.

Even those who normally disdain sword and sorcery type fiction as hackneyed and simplistic are urged to read _Nifft the Lean_. Shea brings a new level of intellegence to the genre rarely seen in recent decades. A man is drug forcibly down through the depths of hell. What is the final torture awaiting him there? Probably not what you think....

Shea, unfortunately not a very prolific author, has shown his mastery in this work (Nifft the Lean even won the World Fantasy award for best novel, 1983!). Be on the lookout for a new edition of this book in the fall, hopefully followed soon by a sequel!.

Arnold Schwarzenegger hasn't competed as a bodybuilder since he won the Mr. Olympia title in 1980, but he remains the sport's No. 1 icon. He hosts an annual bodybuilding contest in Columbus, Ohio, and allows a column to be ghost-written under his name in a muscle magazine. Today's bodybuilders may have bigger muscles than Arnold ever did, but everyone inside and outside the iron game gives him credit for exponentially broadening the popularity of physique training.

With this updated Encyclopedia (it was originally published in 1985), Schwarzenegger wraps his huge arms around the entire sport. He hits the history of bodybuilding, the champions (he's quite generous in his praise of predecessors, contemporaries, and successors alike), the training systems. Some of the information is more bodybuilding lore than science; for example, exercises are said to "expand the rib cage" or develop the "inner" or "outer" chest, all physiological impossibilities. But they're still good exercises, and the book includes every movement imaginable for every muscle group.

If you love the sport of bodybuilding, you'll want this book in your library, if for no other reason than to feast your eyes on the hundreds of photos of the best physiques in the history of the sport. And, in a pinch, the 800-page encyclopedia can fill in nicely for a missing dumbbell. --Lou Schuler

This book is exactly what it says it is- an encyclopedia. It is divided into no less than five "books." Measuring in at about one and a half inches thick, if the info contained inside doesn't help you get bigger, just try lifting the book!

A quick rundown of each chapter. The first book is basically an introduction to bodybuilding, covering a lot of miscellaneous, but important topics. The second book covers the training programs, the third the body part exercises, and the fourth book competing. The fifth and last book covers nutrition and diets.

As you can tell, there's really only one word to describe this book- comprehensive. Would have liked to see a little more on injuries, for example there only about a half page on shoulder injuries, but then again this isn't exactly a sports medicine book either. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that is keeping you out of the gym.

Forget the new diets, new exercises, uneducated personal trainers, just buy this book, and your have all the knowledge from diet, training, technique... just everything, even how to pose!

Arnie was the best, and he has given all his knowledge to the world in this book. This book is indeed "the bible"

5 out of 5 stars Body Building Bible by Arnold Schwarzenegger.......2007-09-19

This book rocks, I have yet to really digest it but so far it has proven to be a great source of invaluable information regarding how to get in shape (even if you don't want to bulk up like Arnold!) I definitely recommend "The New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding: The Bible of Bodybuilding, Fully Updated and Revised By Arnold Schwarzenegger with Bill Dobbins." (I wasn't able to put the link in somehow).
                                Sincerely,
                                Joel.

5 out of 5 stars New Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding.......2007-09-06

The title doesn't lie-I can't imagine a more comprehensive bodybuilding book. Not to mention it makes a great doorstop..or a weapon...Although the photo shoots are a bit dated, and Schwarzenegger clearly has his own opinions on who makes the great bodybuilder list, the history is fun and the exercises are clearly described and photographed. This book is great for all bodybuilders, male or female, novice or pro.

workouts, new aproaches to workouts, excercises that aren't even on bodybuilding.com, nutrition, posing, contest preperation, and that's only the first things that pop into mind when i think of this book,
it's a must for anyone who takes weight lifting or more so body building seriously, or would like to get into it.
                                i'd been body build for a year and had hit my plateau after around five months, but after reading through this book, it's only been a couple of weeks and i'm noticeably breaking through that plateau;

The star of hit television show Growing Up Gotti shares her secret family recipes along with anecdotes about her lively Italian family.

Victoria Gotti has become as famous for her cooking as she is for all her other fabulous media appearances. Here, she shares the secrets to all her wonderful Italian recipes, for all occasions.

Filled with 100 recipes of her own, as well as from friends and family, Victoria Gotti's cookbook will tickle your palate on any occasion: breakfast, lunch, barbecue, appetizers, desserts and Sunday dinners; special times like birthdays and weddings; meals for entertaining friends and families, and of course food for the holidays such as Christmas, Easter, and the Feast of San Gennaro.

For that is the essence of cooking for Victoria – keeping the family together with heart–warming, delicious meals made with tender loving care. Her meals encourage family togetherness, and will gather round your loved ones for the kind of all–important quality time that many people leave out of their fast–paced lives. She proves that even the business female executives juggling the pressures of the workplace, home and kids can prepare and cook homemade, healthy and delicious meals that everyone will enjoy.

With a beautiful sixteen–page color photo insert of her most spectacular meals, Victoria will take the reader through the history of the Gotti family, with historical black and white photos of her parents, uncles and aunts, and grandparents, and a food history of the family as well. The family stories will be interwoven with and tied into the recipes that have marked the lives of one of the best–known Italian families in America.

Victoria also adds little personal stories between sections which are written in a heartfelt manner. This cookbook is a must for people who love to cook Italian food.

                                Book Description

This user-friendly book on pet rabbit health from a caretakerÂ's perspective is written for people with little or no medical or veterinary background. Its goal is to help rabbit owners play a more active, informed role in their rabbitÂ's health care decisions. It should never substitute for a trip to the veterinarian!

The bookÂ's predecessor, Rabbit Health 101, received a favorable review in Exotic DVM Veterinary Magazine. The revised edition incorporates feedback from veterinarians across the country and includes the latest information for the new millennium.

                                Topics include:

Stories and pictures of rabbits from around the world are sprinkled throughout the book, adding personal touches to serious topics. By the time you have read the entire book you will feel that you know Smokey, who inspired the original Rabbit Health 101, and Murray, who contributed so much to this most recent update.

This is the second time I purchased this book. I owned the first edition and when the second came out, I had to have it. The book is greatly reassuring at 11:30 at night when your discover something wrong with your bunny and the vet won't be available until morning. My our case, the book enabled us to diagnose our bunny's diabetes, something that our vet missed even though she is a "bunny expert". A must for every pet rabbit owner!!!

5 out of 5 stars Know How to Tell When Your Rabbit is Sick .......2005-09-14

Since rabbits are prey animals they hide illness really well. That's why its important for rabbit keepers to know how to see even the faintest signs of illness and what they mean. The book educates the reader on common illness and their treatments and more chronic illnesses. The author covers drugs, how safe they are, and what they do and discusses alternative medicine. The book has also been reviewed by a vet before publishing so the information can be trusted. This goes beyond what a standard rabbit care book, this is a rabbit health book. Use it as a supplement to a good rabbit care book like the House Rabbit Handbook or Rabbits for Dummies. I recommend this over the Rabbitopaedia, which has incorrect information in it.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read About Common Medical Problems in Rabbits.......2003-12-03

This is a wonderful book for any bunny parent who wants to learn more about specific rabbit illnesses. I have referred to this book quite often when one of my bunnies seems "out of sorts". The chapters include Being Prepared, Common Rabbit Health Issues, Chronic Ailments and Aging Bunnies, Care of the Chronically Ill, Diagnosis and Conventional Treatments, Alternative Medicine, Knowing When to Say Goodbye, and Coping with Loss. When you know more about common rabbit illnesses, the more prepared you'll be if something does happen to your bunny.

It isn't all inclusive, by any means, but it gives a very nice overview of the subject and is LOADED with large color photographs. Even my wife liked looking at them -- and that's saying something! There are several tables and a list of manufacturers in the back and an index. Well worth a few bucks.

I found this book to be very helpful. in fact I found just what I wanted. It tells you what types of roses are fragrant, dissease resistant, everything you would need to know about each rose. It also had beautiful pictures and was very easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars All you need to know about roses.......1998-08-22

This book is definitely very good. The first time I opened it, I was disappointed, as I saw in the first two chapters a history about roses. Then comes the good part: it explains whatever you may need to take care of your roses. It has a lot of pictures and photos, it explains what kind of soil do roses need, how to choose the right plants, planting the roses, watering, fertilizing, pruning, reproducing, combating pest and diseases, how to protect the roses from freezing, etc. It includes pictures of how roses diseases looks like, gives you an explanation of the symptoms, and the solutions available for the disease. The last two chapters describe how to enjoy roses indoors, how to make potpourri, and has an "encyclopedia of roses" with photos of a lot of different species. In short: buy this book. Definitely the "American Rose Society endorsed" logo is well earned.

                                          Book Description

LaTeX is the premier software system used for presenting scientific and technical information on the printed page, being the system of choice for writers in mathematics, the sciences, computer science, and engineering. It is also increasingly used by nontechnical writers interested in superior printing and document presentation. Authors wishing to take full advantage of this powerful software often have questions that go beyond how to use the basic style files or commands. For example, how can you integrate any of the high quality commercial fonts that are available? How can you typeset mathematics in anything other than the original TeX fonts? How can you generate complex graphics for use in a LaTeX document? What Internet resources are available to a LaTeX author? How can you connect TeX and LaTeX to everyday office software? In general, writers need clear, accurate, and concise instructions, solutions, and explanations for common problems and situations. This unique book provides this assistance, containing many examples and summaries of procedures to follow. TeX Unbound will be the reference of choice for every writer wishing to express technical information.

5 out of 5 stars MetaPost fans will *love* Chapter 13!.......2001-12-05

Alan Hoenig's book is a real tour-de-force when it comes to discussing TeX's arcane font-handling. If you want to learn how to install fonts for use with TeX, this is the book for you. Virtual fonts, PostScript fonts, MetaFont +... they're all covered. Want to mix-and-match new maths typefaces -- you'll find nearly 30 pages of examples (the "Rogues' Gallery").

It is quite apparent, to me anyway, that the author has a love of typography and you'll find lots of examples and hints for good "typographic style".

The book abounds with examples of what is possible -- if you think "TeX = Maths only", think again. As this book shows, TeX is about fine typesetting -- whether mathematical or straight text.

It is, as others have commented, quite an eclectic mix of topics, but, for me, one topic makes the book's price worthwhile -- the coverage of MetaPost (John Hobby's graphics programming language). MetaPost is a little "tricky" to learn, so the fact that the author devoted a whole chapter to it (Chapter 13 -- some MetaFont too), is what made me buy the book.

Personally, I would like to see more MetaPost at the expense, perhaps, of some of the more exotic font material, but that's a personal preference. The MetaPost examples are well chosen, and well explained. If this book comes out in a second edition, I'd ask the author to (at least) double the size of the MetaPost chapter -- good introductory information on MetaPost programming is very hard to find :-(. Publishers, please publish a book about MetaPost!

Overall, this is not the sort of book you'd read in one sitting, but you'll certainly find yourself dipping into it on a regular basis to make use of the wealth of ideas, tips + tricks.

Nice one Professor Hoenig, but more MetaPost, please :-)

4 out of 5 stars Best discussion on TeX/LaTeX and fonts yet.......1999-08-10

I'll agree that this book is a bit of a hodgepodge of issues on the TeX/LaTeX typesetting systems. One of the various topics covered, however, and as I recall it's also the most extensive part, is a comprehensive discussion on one of the most arcane of all TeX issues, that of fonts. Even after many years of experience as a fairly advanced end user, I realized, while reading that book, that there were, to my shame, countless details I had up-to-now failed to _really_ understand. The discussion on the use and installation of type-1 fonts alone, to my mind, is well worth the price.

The discussion on graphics, while interesting, cannot obviously be compared to the definitive work by Goosens, Rahtz et al., but it doesn't take anything away from my general appreciation: it's one of the few books on TeX/LaTeX in recent memeory that made me feel I was actually learning something I didn't know. Hoenig makes a point of using a rich, fluent, and extremely acurate prose which further enhances the reading enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Is it a beginner's book? Is it an advanced text? I dunno........1999-06-10

I'll admit I'm just a LaTeX junkie who doesn't have a lot of time for plain TeX commands. I picked up this book because it looked as though it had some LaTeX stuff on fonts in it, and I was bored. Once again, I had recently skimmed my way through Knuth's "TeX Book" in yet another ill-fated effort to motivate myself to learn some plain TeX commands. ("\hsize" in TeX, "\hspace" in LaTeX--oh, I'll just confuse myself.) The short Appendix in this book (for which Hoenig is way too apologetic) which starts the reader out on TeX was much more fun to read, and I immediately sat down, picked up Knuth's bible to use as a reference, and re-coded some of my LaTeX documents into plain TeX, all the while muttering, "This isn't too onerous. Hmmmm, maybe in a couple of weeks I'll write my own TeX style set." The LaTeX Appendix is less successful as a primer, but that's okay because you aren't really buying this book for the appendicies. Or are you? The rest of the work deals with advanced topics regarding fonts and graphics and is set forth in lucid fashion with a good and concrete discussion of the NFSS. (Why is it that most of these TeX/LaTeX books are so vague and nebulous concerning fonts? This book proves that you can concisely write about TeX fonts without forcing the reader to read between the lines or piece together nuggets of wisdom from multiple sources.)

Sure, it's geared toward advanced TeX users, I think. But LaTeX afficianados should give it a look or at least buy it and photocopy that little Appendix to pass around to friends.

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for the font freaks.......1998-07-22

Alan Hoenig's "TeX Unbound" is a very remarkable book which differs greatly from any other TeX-related book seen so far. This is not a book about using TeX or LaTeX; it is about related topics that are equally important to good typography, namely setting up and making proper use of PostScript fonts, and creating high-quality graphics illustrations with TeX-friendly methods.

The first five chapters provide a brief but comprehensive overview about TeX, LaTeX, METAFONT and METAPOST, with particular emphasis on how it all fits together, how the production cycle works, and what kinds of files are involved. While the material is generally adequate, it might be a little terse at times, and the coverage of recent TeX distributions and Internet resources is not quite as up-to-date as one might have wished.

The second part, comprising chapters 6--10, is one of the greatest strengths of "TeX Unbound" and delves deeply into the topic of fonts. Starting fr! om the basics of setting up a standard font family, it moves on to more and more fancy and extraordinary applications, covering a wealth of material you don't find anywhere else. For example, it explains how to generate special effects fonts, or how to set up a font family containing alternate character sets or symbols. This part is rounded off by a chapter on math fonts, followed by 30 pages of examples showing how various combinations of well-known text typefaces might be used together with the few choices of math fonts currently available.

Finally, the third part of _TeX Unbound_, comprising chapters 11--15, discusses graphics applications, with particular emphasis on TeX-friendly methods such as METAFONT and METAPOST, the PSTricks package, PicTeX, or MFpic.

If there is any other book that covers a similar range of topics as "TeX Unbound", it might be "The LaTeX Graphics Companion" which, however, sets different priorities.

In the area of fonts, &! quot;TeX Unbound" is clearly the winner. While "T! he LaTeX Graphics Companion" has a good coverage of the basics, "TeX Unbound" goes far beyond that, providing the deepest and most comprehensive coverage of the topic ever published so far.

In the area of graphics, both books are about equally good in their coverage of some of the best methods, but "The LaTeX Graphics Companion" covers a wider range of graphics applications, including quite a few methods you don't find in "TeX Unbound". Nevertheless, "TeX Unbound" provides enough to get you started.

In summary, "TeX Unbound" is a great resource if you like playing with fonts (and if you have a sufficient range of typefaces at your disposal). If your primary interest lies in designing graphics illustrations, "TeX Unbound <" does a good job of what it covers, but it is not the most comprehensive reference available.

                                          Book Description

Zina Garrison took the mostly white tennis world by storm, climbing to number four in singles rankings and earning millions in prize money. In this intimate account of her life, she shares the ups and downs of her experiences as a professional athlete, including the glory of Wimbledon, the trials of a rocky marriage, her battle with bulimia, and the difficulty of losing her mother. Throughout her struggles, disappointments, and triumphs, she maintains the determination and inner strength that made her a champion.

4 out of 5 stars Solid, endearing piece of work.......2006-03-16

Zina Garrison will go down in history among the ranks of "favorite" athletes who had the heart, the talent, the physical tools and the skills to conquer her sport's pinnacle -- yet sadly, never did.

An Olympic doubles gold medalist; a 1990 Wimbledon finalist; a two-time US Open semifinalist; the player who ended the great Chris Evert's career and the ONLY player to be a top 10 women's rankings mainstay in the modern tennis era for eight years who spent half that time WITHOUT an endorsement deal ... Zina's pro tennis career is marked with near misses, disappointments and victories indistinctive enough I'm scared the average tennis fan will forget her in 10 years.

Lost between Althea Gibson's trailblazing, shocking Grand Slam championships of the late 1950s and the awe-inspiring, megawatt champion Williams Sisters of the new millennium stands Zina Garrison -- a crafty player from Houston, Texas who served and through experience suffered the pains of being one of the few top African American tennis players in a lily white sport.

This book brings you Zina's childhood ... learning the game after following older brother Rodney to a local park and rising to become the best junior in Texas and eventually the Junior Wimbledon & Junior US Open women's singles champ (I think those titles are curses sometimes -- Chanda Rubin also won both titles in the 1990s and never made good in her pro career).

In between her triumphs of making it to the World's top 10 with best friend and fellow Houstonian Lori McNeil, Garrison battled boughts of depression (stemming from both of her parents dying during her childhood -- her dad as she was but a babe and her mom during her teens years -- as well as her first husband's infidelities) and bulimia she later attributed to looking at images of her trim, white competitors and feeling "ugly" because, by today's more celebrated standard, she had a more full-figured, muscular, curvacious body like J. Lo and Serena Williams.

If you're the kind of reader who likes interesting books with tons little known facts, you'll really enjoy "Zina: My Life In Women's Tennis."

For every champion, there's an also-ran who was good enough to be that champ but for whatever reason never reached that summitt.

Particularly for African Americans who understand our struggle in this country for equal rights, an equal playing field and for general social acceptance, this "one step forward, two-steps backs" idea is nothing knew.

Hopefully, Zina Garrison does realize that her success and her late 1980s/1990s image on television had more to do with the budding childhood successes of a new generation led by the Williams Sisters who dared to dream of conquering tennis because they saw other positive role models before them that made that dream possible.

You'll find no tales of drug abuse, sexcapades or alcohol addictions in this book. Zina, by comparison, led a pretty quiet and well-adjusted life both on and off the tennis court.

Her story, like many, is a throwback to a different time in American sports history when top athletes conducted themselves with class, competed hard but still found time to value friendships among their competitors.

Zina was that kind of champion.
