Good early book of the Magdalena series.......2006-08-25
In general, I've liked the books of this series, with the exception of the latest volume. However, "The Hand That Rocks the Ladle," came out in 2000 and is perhaps the best of the lot. Perhaps the writer lost her muse or just couldn't think of more funny comments.
The plot of "Hand That Rocks..." is scarcely worth mentioning, as others have done so and because Tamar Myers' plots are not why one reads her books. In short, the plots are silly and illogical. But who cares? Her characters and asides are quite enough. The characters here are a zany collection, from a religious nutcase who belongs to a church with too many names, to a retired Jewish heart surgeon who hopes to write murder mysteries. And of course there are Magdalena's wacky sister, an insectoid brother in law, the jealous wife of the proprietor of the WalMart for Amishmen, etc.
And with all this, there is a good atmosphere and commentary on the Amish/Mennonite culture. For example: Why is it a sin to put rubber tires on a buggy? Why do Amish men have beards but not moustaches? Why are young Amish boys allowed a period of freedom to "sin," before committing to the faith?
Above all, however, is the humor. Tamar Myers has the rare ability to make a reader laugh aloud without seeming to strain. Only a very few can do that.
A typical Yoder book.......2006-08-05
I liked this book, it is in my opinion one of the funniest in the series and also the the one where the plot matters the least which is just as well. One just enjoy the characters so much it doesn't matter that the plot is just nonsense.
Skinny-Boobed, Barren, Non-Cook Reigns In Culinary Cozy .......2005-07-18
Tamar Myers gleefully gets away with spoofing (in good taste) the Amish, Mennonite subcultures. I'm thinking those communities might proudly read this series, loving Magdalena Yoder's religious outrageousness and pokes at their shared background. Myers gives a delightful view of this culture's ability to bubble with fun just under the surface of what they believe to be necessary religious severity. Maybe everything needs a relief valve.
Misquoted idioms are the forte of Freni, Magdalena's cook, who is also a relative; according to Magdalena, most people in a small Mennonite community are related.
Instead of "taking a page out of their book," Freni suggest to Magdalena that "You should take a page out of their dictionary." The people referenced as having the right page/dictionary from which to "take" are an Amish family who have shunned a relative who has installed rubber tires on his buggy. It seems that in this case rubber tires are too much of a lazy luxury.
Might that be why Myers doesn't quite allow herself the gourmet luxury Diane Mott Davidson relishes religiously in her series, with Goldy Schulz catering at the helm? Maybe it's too sensual to watch a character wallowing in luscious details in a cooking process simultaneous to getting a clue.
Or, possibly everyone has a different little bit of heaven to take to earth.
In August of 2002, after I had read all available Goldy books, I turned to other culinary mysteries, picking at what seemed to make them tick in readers' minds.
In that collection, THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE LADLE had the most fetching cover (along with Davidson's CHOPPING SPREE). I had noticed right off that Magdalena Yoder was certainly spunky; no character dud there. She had one of those zany, punny, dunning senses of humor expressed in every catchy turn-of-phrase. She had this reader spinning, wanting to pick up every verbal nuance, which served as a great diversion to remembering that the game was to catch CLUES, instead.
Yet, I also noticed fairly quickly that Magdalena didn't discuss food detail much; not like Goldy, who analyzes the mystery while liberally offering the reader sensual moans of culinary tastes, smells, and textures. In fact Magdalena didn't cook, at all, and she was barren (and unmarried) to boot. As noted above, the touted cook at the Pen Dutch Inn was Mag's aunt (or older cousin?), Freni. As a Mennonite, Mag's an entertaining anomaly.
The included recipes from the Pen Dutch were indeed GOOD. On page 23 of the paperback, "Bubble and Squeak" is featured, which is a gooey, flavor-lush, potato-pancake-thingy fried in bacon grease. In a footnote Magdalena cautions:
"For a heart-smart, low-fat version use only the potatoes, cabbage, and onion. Fry in olive oil."
Yeah, "heart-smart" is right. The heart "smarts" or hurts when we deny it tasteful fat. As preached by me, the heart loves cholesterol; maybe scientific research just hasn't noticed the right angle, yet, of that brain-product. Often we don't want too much fat; "greasy" makes the stomach roil. But sometimes, maybe when the body and heart need the intense cohesiveness of animal fats (contrary to current medical mania, I have the gall to believe there's not truly a bad Vs good cholesterol distinction), our taste buds REQUEST it. But that may be too heavenly a concept for the current masochistic mood of flavor-phobia.
How did we arrive at this everything-good-is-bad-for-you mode of pushing a life not worth living?
In my continued reading of this Pen Dutch mystery (with recipes) I began, at one point during a menopausal heat wave, to become impatient with the constant verbal cuteness. The style was beginning to feel more like cartoon caricature and less like full-bodied escape fiction. Of course I knew that cozies didn't develop a habit of offering visceral escape; partly because characterization and relationships weren't easily developed within the strictures of that genre. (Until a few hungry authors found a way around that conundrum, possibly beginning with Rex Stout, Lawrence Sanders, and Virginia Rich - see my Listmania on Rich.)
Based at her Penn Dutch Inn (with recipes), Mag severely shook the fibers of the envelope for multifaceted characters as she stuffed in the "loose" Mennonite driving a red BMW, a non-cook who's rarely present to run her Inn. Even so, that composite did work, more than well. As I steeped into the fantasy of a Mennonite female with a Jewish-mamma attitude, a female who was barren, skinny-boobed, and spunky, I began noticing an involuntary process taking place, a redesigning of my menopausal brain waves.
Myers seems to be compelled to constantly transform dichotomies; as soon as the reader begins to "peg" or stereotype something, an opposite, non sequitur is successfully slid into the mix:
A Reader might well ask:
"Do I have his right? This character is a MENNONITE driving a RED BMW? Shouldn't a Mennonite female be sitting, spine-aligned in severe pose beside a bearded Man directing a stodgy horse hitched to a buggy?
"Is this a CULINARY mystery in which the main character can't boil water?
"Okay, so here's an unmarried Mennonite who is barren, lost her virginity to an English later discovered to be married, and is sexually pursuing another English who might be uncovered as the murderer in the mystery?"
Irony, dichotomy, twists, whatever you want to call them, Myers appears to love that quirky flavor of nonstop metamorphosis. And, she is GOOD.
This technique is fascinatingly effective for breaking through old stereotypes and preventing new ones from gaining momentum. Maybe that is the Myers Mission.
My early problem as a reader was that I continued trying to settle into some type of comforting, cohesive "sameness" so that I could escape my daily routine stuck-ness, escape the parts of my life which were less than entertaining or not "there" yet.
Maybe that's the problem with satire when it goes over the line (if it has a line) from light into heavy.
There's a point at which the reader is able to identify with the good guys in a novel, and to find a fall in place for living in the plot. But, in the case of bitter, biting satire, none of the characters are what a heroic-natured-person would want to internalize. (Though this is not the case here.)
In pure satire the reader doesn't want to root in and nurture himself by becoming part of the fictional world through the main character. Instead, the reader, by defensive necessity, remains aloof from grating characters in a world in which everything is cuttingly wrong. To root in, live, and drink the nectar from that type of environment would be to willingly pollute the psyche by feeding it the exact poison which the heroic fictional world is normally meant to extract.
This may be why purely satiric fiction draws a smaller audience, in an elevated cerebral ball park. Yet, satire often becomes blockbuster popular when it's presented in nonfiction form. Possibly this is because readers don't automatically root themselves deeply into nonfiction and LIVE there, as they attempt to do with fiction.
Nonfiction produces an intellectual, generally non emotional experience; fiction lives viscerally in the mind of the reader. (Please don't ask how one gets his guts into his cranium!)
Robin Williams and Calista Flockheart are two of the few fictional characters who've been able to balance a strong satiric thread with loveable heroic natures. The movies in which these actors are featured work as fiction; the audience roots willingly and comfortably; the result is that a healing force accomplishes its goal through an unlikely blend of out-there comedy and sensitive drama.
When the balance in fictional satire is too cutting and less sensitive, could rooting cause unresolved pain and possibly a cellular-level disruption of a healthy life force? Oh my. Maybe severe satire should be absorbed "above the neck" where nonfiction "lives"?
Yet the sweeping success of Robin/Calista type of satire proves that the right balance of gentle cutting can blend into lifting and brightening, enough to anesthetize the breakthrough/release of time-solidified-barriers of warn-out thought and the damagingly-dead dogma of historically seated poisons.
Please excuse the agonizingly analytical turn this review has taken; hopefully I haven't reined out too far, as I snap the reins further.
The Myers Penn Dutch series appears to balance the line of satiric fiction well enough to win a large audience, if her commercial popularity is an accurate gauge. As implied, I believe that long-term, best-seller-status is a good indicator of fictional satire done positively.
Possibly it's easier to succeed using a strong satiric-set in cozy mysteries than in other fiction genres, since cozies (especially the Christie or British type detective novels) generally appeal to the more cerebral readers.
Well, that was true ... until culinary slipped into cozy and brought the essence of visceral out of the blood & guts, shock & pain which drives gritty crime novels, and into the pleasant, tasty, appetizing areas of visceral. There's room for variety within 17 feet of intestines (if I have the length right)!
In general I'll conclude that some fiction satire soars, flourishing in the mass-marketplace; while other such offerings bomb, descend, and die ... except in the small camps of oily, stalwart souls who crave the bitter, cutting intensity of sour heroes, and remain untainted when identifying with them. I could use some of their snake oil!
In specifics I will draw the only conclusion possible to me. I will read additional offerings in the Tamar Meyers Magdelana Yoder series. I want to cultivate my taste into another ready-made culinary collection, well enough that cravings begin to develop. I can do this. You may be ahead of me, but I'm on the path.
No matter what I've agonized over here, this entertaining, gentle, and tasteful exposure of various levels of the Amish culture should remain not only a best-seller in the mass marketplace, it should receive kudos of the highest order as being a landmark offering within the annals of Cultural Conversations.
In awe of the sophisticated complexity here,
LG Shelnutt
You will rock with laughter!.......2004-08-27
Magdalena Yoder is the proprietress of the Penn-Dutch Inn in Hernia,Pennsylvania. Her cook Freni's daughter in law going to have triplets any day now. To everyone's surprise there are twin boys born, with no sign of a third baby. Freni ask Magdalena to find out what happened to the third baby. When one of the characters is murdered, Magdalena asks too many questions and almost becomes a victim herself.
I like all the books in the Penn- Dutch series and this is one of the better ones. The humor is outstanding and there is so much of it, that I almost feel like I should go back and reread the book because I know I missed some of the jokes!
Another thing I liked is that Magdalena's sister, Susannah, became more of a character and less of a cliché in this book. There were some nice moments between the two of them, where, they actually bonded. There is also a hilarious scene in a diner involving Susannah's dog, Snookums, that is laugh out loud funny.
There is also a lot of information on the Amish and how they live in this book, more so then in the earlier books in the series. That was a nice addition and I hope she keeps it up in later books.
If you enjoyed the other books in this series, you will love this one.
Will you quit wailing, already?.......2004-01-07
Tamar Myers, The Hand That Rocks the Ladle (Signet, 2000)
I'll get this out of the way first and foremost: I like the Den of Antiquity novels better than I like the Pennsylvania Dutch novels. But it's hard to turn down any book that has recipes as a part of its plotline, isn't it?
Myers brings back indefatigable Mennonite heroine Magdalena Yoder, owner of the Penn Dutch Inn and the most unreliable narrator outside the autobiographies of some of those she reports have stayed at her inn. In this episode of her escapades, her cook, Freni, has a daughter who's pregnant with triplets, a husband who's feeling sympathy pains, and a cadre of evil doctors straight out of a Robin Cook medical thriller. When Freni's daughter gives birth to twins, everyone is quick to blame it on her old doctor, who has something of a fondness for the bottle, and probably miscounted the heartbeats. Right? But Freni knows different, and she ropes Magdalena into finding baby number three, despite Amanda having an innful of very odd guests, no cook, and a mysterious stranger she is convinced is Michael Jackson.
The main problem I have with the Penn Dutch mysteries is that the narrative tone just gets under my skin for some reason. The Den of Antiquity books are narrated pretty much like any other novel, but Myers has infested Magdalena Yoder with a voice that stops just this side of annoying; imagine Frances MacDormand's character in Fargo, but with a rural Pennsylvania accent, and I think you'll understand what I'm getting at. It's n full steam here, and undercuts the otherwise fun book (and wonderful recipes for things like Toad Stroganoff. I kid you not). The other problem with it is that one of the main clues to what's going on comes in the first couple of chapters, and might as well have "I'M A CLUE" stamped on it in big red letters, so when you get to the big twist ending, you've seen it coming for the last two hundred pages. Those problems aside, the book is well-plotted and well-paced, and the nutzoid quality of the characters makes it as interesting a read as any of the other Penn Dutch books; still, if you're a Myers newbie, you might want to head for the Den of Antiquity mysteries first. ** ½

Book Description
What do green lions, nine-headed winged snakes, giant gold-digging ants and fish in the shape of bishops have in common? They all inhabit this new, comprehensive collection of strange and fantastic beasts. In excerpts spanning millennia and reflecting the development of the Western imagination itself, we encounter old favorites like the dragon, unicorn, phoenix, griffin, and mermaid, as well as a host of other bizarre creatures. Comprising hundreds of well-known and obscure primary sources arranged chronologically by writer, The Book of Fabulous Beasts traces the development of imaginary animals as they appear and reappear in literary accounts from the Babylonian epic of creation to modern fantasy. From Herodotus to medieval bestiaries and travelers's tales, and from Renaissance heraldry, alchemy, and natural histories to the fantasy fiction of Tolkien, the author shows how these resilient beasts--once believed to be real--have transformed and regenereated through time, surviving even the Age of Reason that banished them to the realm of the "fabulous." With an extensive general introduction, glossary of animals, bibliography, index, and more than a hundred illustrations from a Babylonian cylinder seal of a god battling a dragon to James Thurber's drawing of a unicorn in a modern garden, this volume will be the standard reference for years to come. The Book of Fabulous Beasts is the rare combination of an exhaustive source book and a delightful read. Readers can browse excerpts, trace one particular creature as it develops through time and translation, or read this epic story straight through, discovering along the way as much about the history and dreams of the human creature as about the fanciful animals on every page.

Beautiful.......2004-11-26
If you like this book, then you should pick up Nick Bantock's (of Gryphon & Sabine fame), " Averse to Beasts," a book with cassette whose beastiary art is a wonderful companion piece to this definitive text.
A must for scholars and a good read for everyone else........1999-02-03
This must be the definitive text when it comes to a compendium of fabulous beasts. The choice of entries is excellent and expansive, the accompanying editorial insightful. Should become a classic.

pain.......2007-07-21
Very informative book....I have learned much from it that I can apply to my exercise program.
Amazing!!!.......2007-05-15
I have had horrible, progressively debilitating low back pain for 1.5 years. I have spent thousands of dollars on massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, and so on, all of which helped for short periods of time. I tried physical therapy, but it did not help for very long. I stretched and strengthened on my own every day, but it did not help for long. I bought this book and began doing the exercises. I felt an immediate change and relief after doing the exercises just once. I have been doing the exercises faithfully every day for 2.5 weeks now, and I am no longer taking pain medication. If my back flares up a little, I just do the exercises, and I get immediate relief and don't have to take pain medication at all. I also have found that eating a low-inflammatory diet and taking Omega 3 supplements every day help with inflammation immensely, but those didn't help with the actual structural problem that was the underlying cause of my low back pain. The exercises in this book are addressing the structural problems. I am so thankful that this book was written. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has chronic pain. The exercises seem to strengthen and stretch in all the exact right places in the exact right sequence. I can feel my back getting stronger and balanced the way it should be.
I hurt myself on this program.......2007-04-10
I've had chronic back & neck pain, that I manage through stretching & strengthening. This program aggravated my condition, so I dropped it.

Steve
In 1996, I met Anthony Carey at a Health Fair in San Diego, California. From that first meeting, it was obvious that his approach to staying physically healthy was different than most others in the industry... and it made perfect sense... and it WORKED! As workplace safety consultants, we incorporate Pain Free Program with every Ergonomics Evaluation and Training we do - and we have been advocates of Anthony's approach to wellness; referring people to Function First since they started. Thank you Anthony for putting it in writing - and for the help you are bringing to so many people.

Plan that works.......2006-08-25
I figured out my body type from the information in the book and did the appropriate exercises. The exercises are not hard and are not very time consuming. I have several posteral issues that I've had all my life. After a couple of weeks I could feel that my body had changed - not that I lost weight, but that things were in different places. Later I noticed more changes. It's really helped with my postural issues - something no other exercise program had done. I'd recommend it.

This book is filled with simple recipes. The desserts are all great. An excellent book for the beginner or intimidated chef!
Best cookbook I own!.......2005-10-25
I got this cookboot about a month ago and love it. It's easy, affordable and tasty. My mom and boyfriend loved the Mexican Chicken bake, Honey-Glazed Ham, Frozen Lemonade Pie and my fave, Chilled Strawberry Soup. Tastes just like the soup we had on one of our cruises. I would highly recommend this book to anyone. I'm giving it to family and friends for Christmas- At their request!
Simple, quick, minimal cleanup - a winner.......2003-09-29
This is a great cookbook for those with little cooking experience. Most other cookbooks have one, or at the most two recipes per page because of the space needed for complex preparation instructions. That is not the case at all with this cookbook. These recipes are simple enough that they only require two to four sentences to explain how to prepare the dish from start to finish.
Of course, when you are limiting yourself to only three ingredients you find that you end up with a lot of side dishes and vegetable recipes. But, there are plenty of main dishes so a well-balanced meal can be prepared. A few of my favorites include Rosemary-Roasted Potatoes, Honey-Orange Glazed Chicken, and June Ballard's Cajun Chicken. To keep the ingredient list to just three the recipes take advantage of many mixes like box cake mixes or stuffing mixes. Basically it hits all the high points for the new or hurried cook - quick and easy to prepare, goof-proof, minimal cleanup, and tasty results.
Another nice feature is the section with complete menu suggestions. Ruthie Warnall has compiled a suggested Valentine Dinner Menu, Easy Dinner for New Brides, Easy Sunday Dinner, Quick Gourmet Dinner, Pot Roast Dinner, Turkey Dinner, Chicken Dinner, and Romantic Dinners for Special Occasions. Each of the dinners contains only items from the cookbook and so are all easy to prepare with minimal fuss.
Comb bound so it lies flat when you are working with it, it is a recommended read for new cooks (or college kids just out of the house) and those with a tight family schedule.
short-cut meals.......2003-07-29
Ruthie Wornall's neat little book will help you minimize your kitchen time, yet still be able to put varied, nutritious and festive dishes on your table at mealtimes. Kids will be able to use these recipes, which feature ingredients you're likely to have on your shelves already.
Experienced cooks may smile to find to recognize that they may have already put together some of the recipes, when faced with a time or energy crunch! If you like good results without having to fuss, this book is for you. Highly recommended.

Dog Grooming for Dummies.......2007-10-10
This book is full of useful information, but unfortunately it is lacking in illustrations or photos that would help the "Dummies" learn from scratch how to bathe, clip, and otherwise groom their dogs. This is too visual/hands on a process to be simply described in words.

The Best Book on Attracting Wildlife.......2007-06-07
When you read this book you know you are receiving good, high quality and accurate advice. David Mizejewski, the author, has sound knowledge and experience which he shares with us. After reading this book and following it's instructions, I was able to have my backyard certified a Wildlife Habitat.
Unlike some other books, this one doesn't give outdated information. Invasive or harm plants are identified and cautioned against. If a plant is invasive, beneficial native alternatives are suggested.
The book is full projects that are actually do-able. And not ones that require several power tools. So, read this book and learn about attracting birds, butterflies, mammals, reptiles and amphibians to your garden. And go on safari by steeping out the back door.
Wow alot in a small book.......2007-05-08
This book is WONDERFUL!! I took this to the local nursery so I could buy the right flowers, I noticed folks were looking over my shoulder. It's a great book for ALL your birds, butterflies and just remodeling your yard.
Each topic is condensed on one page, just the facts and photos. Each topic has a photo of some sort to help you understand the reading. There were topics that I would not have even looked up, but now I am glad I know more about it!!! The book is in A-Z format and doesn't used alot of
"tech. terms" I don't understand, and that's great!!! It has receipes on making birds treats and some really great ideas on how to even tame a few wildlife birds and such! A MUST FOR ALL NATURE LOVERS!!! JT
Nice overview, but not helpful otherwise.......2005-09-22
This book outlines several topics, one or two pages per topic, such as birdbaths, artificial ponds, etc., various topics that are all relevant, interesting, and just what you want... but it doesn't treat any one topic thoroughly or well enough. Well before I bought this book, I already knew a bit about how to provide habitats to encourage bees (for example). This book only gave a very rough overview of how to create one type of bee environment (how to make tubes to attract mason bees) but didn't even indicate that there are other types of bees (such as bumble bees... honey bees... various other bee species, each of which need their own particular type of home built for them), let alone give guidelines how to attract them. The most important thing, choosing plants that are bird-friendly or bee-friendly or animal-friends, it handles in a very superficial manner. True, it may list a few species of plants, but it hardly gives a comprehensive list. It doesn't say anything about the plants, such as zones, light/shade preference, etc. In summary, if there's anything you want to do, such as choose plants carefully, you'll need to buy another book. Beehouses? Buy another book or scour the internet. Yes, this book will motivate you, will make you feel, how nice it will be to build a butterfly-friendly garden. But it doesn't really give you what you need to do it, besides make you feel good about it. Do you want to build a birdhouse? Scoure the internet or buy another book. The only thing this book is good for, is to tell you the few topics you should start to think about. And that, you can get just by reading the Table of Contents. Oddly, it spends many pages describing home recipes for making bird cakes and patties, out of animal fat and seeds, that you can hang up in your garden -- a sort of Martha Stewart section slipped in the middle of the book there, as though this was the only "specific" information the author had at hand. I would suggest that instead of this, you buy a book that is positively overloaded with info like Degraaf's "Trees, Shrubs, and Vines for Attracting Birds" which lists a page per specie various plants -- start there. Then look up bee boxes on the internet. Etc.
Lots of great projects you can do with your kids.............2005-04-25
So you want to turn your big back yard into a wildlife refuge? The place to begin is with the NWF `ATTRACTING BIRDS, BUTTERFLIES AND OTHER BACKYARD WILDLIFE.' This book, part of the `Creative Homeowner Series includes all kinds of nifty ideas for making your yard creature-friendly. You will become interested in ridding yourself of noxious grass the upkeep of which is frustrating, a lot of work, and expensive, and probably a source of pollution in your watershed. The book explains the reason why you also want to rid yourself of invasive exotic plants and add native plantings to your yard. Many `exotics carry disease and many fail to nourish the local fauna that grew up with the native stuff. Birds, for example, find the berries from the native Dogwood much more nutritious than the fruit of the Kousa Dogwood. You want to strive for balance in your yard if you want more bird sightings. If you live far enough out in the hinterland, you may also find other creatures visit your yard (though I live in Arlington VA and my neighbor reports a raccoon is having a fish dinner every night from her pond, and I know I have smelled a skunk on many mornings).
The beautiful photos in this publication will inspire you to plan and plant as well as spread peanut butter on your homemade `energy muffins' filled with cornmeal, peanuts and suet or vegetable shortening. You can decorate a Yule tree for the birds the kids might enjoy and/or build a pond with decorative plants. Or if you don't have room for a pond, try making a puddle or a muddy area (the kids will love this) or a container garden for small spaces. You will need to provide cover, which can also be beautiful (we have Cardinals nesting in a Pyracantha bush out front -- my Conure loves to watch them from his window vantage point). We planted Clematis for the butterflies and trumpet flowers for the hummingbirds, and Echinacea for the Finches. The Chickadee loves seeds on the Crepe Myrtle Bush and the Mockingbird loves the Holly.
This is a great book for learning how to attract wildlife (the kind you want) and grow native flora for your fauna, as well as engage in fun activities with your kids or grandkids.

A classic reference.......2003-09-06
Super book that talks to all the needs of wildlife: Food, water, place to stay. It introduces the idea of creating wildlife habitat then steps through different types of gardens (woods, meadow, water) and then goes into some neat chapters on gardening for birds, butterflies and nightlife (which I esdpecially was interested in since I hadn't seen much of this). This was probably one ofthe first mainstream books to talk to bringing back habitat for wildlife and gardening for wildlife. I see it as a classic, a great foundation that you can build off of. If you're just starting to get your arms around gardening for wildlife this is a terrific place to begin - has more than enough to keep you busy.
The National Wildlife Federation Guide to Gardening for Wild.......2000-04-21
Well If you are a avid gardener like me, you would be naturally attracted to the beautiful, coulourful pictures, perfect for coffee table adornment. The only disappoint ment is it does not help you if you live in the Caribbean, it deals mostly with temperate plants, but otherwise a joy to read.

Expensive, but well worth having........2001-06-23
I've got this book checked out of the library right now, but somehow I know I'll soon spend the [money] for my own copy. Every page packs a wallop of ideas. Nightly, I open the tome randomly and read myself to sleep. Weingart has the courage to fill a series of pages with oversize underlined text, another with stark photographs of fields, then off to a visual essay on the power of strikethrough. This book knocks me out.
The father of us all..........2001-02-09
I have been waiting for this book for years. In 1998 I worked as an intern with the Maine Summer Institute in Graphic Design. It was the last year that Mr. Weingart taught there and I was more than honored to work for and learn from him. Near the end of his week he brought out a pre-production copy of his book (no cover, editing marks on some pages) and showed it to all of us. We were enthralled (I have been saving my pennies ever since). This weighty tome isn't your run-of-the-mill portfolio book, this is a journey into the mind of one who personally laid the foundation for nearly all of us in design today. Having this book is almost (but not quite) as good as meeting and learning from the man himself. Open any page and you'll find knowledge and inspiration either in his imagery or his entertaining writing. I now finally have my copy and it is well worth the cost. Humbling and inspiring and is a must for anyone who fancies themselves a typographer.
Type and more.......2000-07-08
This is much more than another book about typography, it's the full disclosure of an artist who paints with the letter M and composes layouts that evoque the Syrian Desert. In this book Weingart opens his life, his creative path and his sources of inspiration. It's not a book of rules or absolutes about typography, but about the experience of it, about its expression and its materials. The book itself is a lesson on layout and impeccable typesetting. Through the provocative images and intimate text Weingart renewed in me the passion for this profession and brought back wonderful memories of the times when he was my teacher. Thank you for this long awaited book!
tripographic.......2000-06-22
Mr weingart lead us in a trip through tipographics arts, the book is an outstanding example of engineering freedoom, A R T. I flip the book for less than 2 minutes, enough to know this is the kind of book you have and you travel with it every once in a while. a book with an incredible echo. Thanks
