Book Description
Trapped in a Taoist monastery, where three young women died allegedly accidental deaths, Judge Dee seeks clues in the eyes of a cat to solve cases of impersonation and murder. A painting by one of the victims reveals lies surrounding the murders and helps Judge Dee seek revenge on the murderer.
"The China of old, in Mr. van Gulik's skilled hands, comes vividly alive again."
—Allen J. Hubin, New York Times Book Review
"Entertaining, instructive, and impressive."—Times Literary Supplement
"If you have not yet discovered Judge Dee and his faithful Sgt. Hoong, I envy you that initial pleasure which comes form the discovery of a great detective story. For the magistrate of Poo-yang belongs in the select group of fictional detectives headed by the renowned Sherlock Holmes."—Robert Kirsch, Los Angeles Times
Robert Van Gulik (1910-67) was a Dutch diplomat and an authority on Chinese history and culture. He drew his plots from the whole body of Chinese literature, especially from the popular detective novels that first appeared in the seventeenth century.

Mystery with History!.......2007-08-11
The Haunted Monastery is a different kind of mystery! I read this book when it first came out in English in 1961. I also read all the other Judge Dee murder mysteries about that time period.
Through surfing Amazon.com, I found out at least sixteen of the series were reprinted in the recent past; so I am rereading them 38 years later! This book, The Haunted Monastery, is set in the Chinese Ming period, and the plates of costumes and customs are representative of the Ming era.
Judge Dee actually lived from A.D. 630 to 700, but the stories in this series of books are fiction.
The writing in The Haunted Monastery is easy to read, but the mystery is complicated. Clues to who the murderers might be are given in several of the pictures. And it is fun to try to guess who did what and why.
The author is an expert on Chinese culture and history. He was a Dutch Diplomat who lived in China.
From the stories and the plates, one learns about Confucian and Tao ethics and philosophy. I am finding the entire Judge Dee series delightful reading. I am enjoying them even more now than I did in the past!
Looking forward to it.......2007-03-14
I just ordered this because I loved the TV movie "Judge Dee and the Monastery Murders" from 1974. I understand it was based on this book. If that's the case I'm sure this will be a great read. If you haven't see the movie you should as it has a great cast with Khigh Diegh, Mako, Irene Tsu, James Hong, Soon-Tek Oh, Keye Luke, and many others. The movie is very well done. Unfortunately it is not available on VHS or DVD. You will have to catch it on TV when it is telecast. I haven't seen it in years myself, so I keep hoping to find it on DVD. Let me know if you see it somewhere.
One of Judge Dee's Best.......2005-02-12
Let's face it; Robert Van Gulik may be an expert on 7th century China, but he isn't exactly a Pultizer-Prize winning author. His writing style is somewhat plain and simple and you'll never be knocked out by his glowing literary descriptions. What he does manage to do, though, is bring this long-lost era to life with his interesting characters and his cultural and historical know-how while telling an enjoyable tale along the way. While some of his longer books are bogged down by too many characters and too much detail, The Haunted Monastery is virtually perfect. Judge Dee and one of his assistants are stuck in a gloomy monastery on a stormy night. The place is rumored to be haunted, and while the threat of harmful spirits lingers in the background, the judge must solve three seemingly unrelated mysteries which all tie together in the end. Dripping with atmosphere and good, interesting characters, this is a fast and enjoyable read which is perfect for a rainy night or a cold winter's day.
A Night Of Terror And Mystery.......2001-06-26
An unexpected storm forces Judge Dee and his three, (yes three!) wives to seek shelter at a Taoist monastery. The wives go straight to bed but the Judge must pay his respects to the abbot before joining them. Thus begins a frantic night of murder and mayhem during which Judge Dee, suffering from a bad head cold, must solve a series of murders, rescue a maiden in distress and arrange for the villain to meet his just deserts, bringing together two sets of star-crossed lovers along the way. "I should give up being a magistrate and become a match-maker!" he grumbles. One of the best of the series.
This is a slow slow descriptive descriptive shallow shallow........2000-10-26
If I were just learning how to write this would be a prefect example. Forty five percent of the book is description. Who cares if Judge Dee has three or four hairs growing out of the mole on his face? And evidently he prefers girls with bushy eyebrows.
Other than that it could be a decent mystery if it did not drag on and on. This may be due to the story being a little too short to publish; it took up three cassettes. The mystery its self is O.K. there is no last minute butlers to show up and confess. Evidently this is part of some Judge Dee series. So someone must like his style.
The story takes place in a monastery where Judge Dee just happens to be passing during a storm and need a place to stay with his three wives. He whiteness some impossible things and meets some mysterious people.

Super Reader.......2007-08-26
So-called terrorists, a time travel experiment, guess what happens? Yep, one guy goes back, gets chased by another 'good' guy, and helps Merlin out with some of his 20th century science/engineering skills, among other things.
The actual story gets even more complicated, as back in the present time, who is actually a terrorist or bad guy, or not, is a very murky thing to have to decide.

It seems as if I over use the word "pioneering" when it comes to Dr. Lord's works, but this is yet another that falls into that category. It would be decades before another author would add to this field. I would definitely add one to my shelf while they can be found, and I'm not even into music!

In this sweeping 1920 biography of Horatio Herbert Kitchener, better known as Lord Kitchener, Sir George Arthur shines a bright light on the British military leader and statesman who, during World War I, organized armies on an unprecedented scale and became famous as the face on British recruitment posters. Volume I covers Kitchener's birth in Ireland in 1850 through his governorship of the British Red Sea territories, ascension to commander-in-chief of the Egyptian army and, in 1900, to commander-in-chief of the Boer War. Written only four years after his death in 1916, this valuable historical account by a friend and contemporary offers a look behind the handlebar mustache and pointing finger of the man whose "Your country needs YOU" posters later inspired those of the United States during World War II. Highly Recommended.......2007-06-04
This is an extremely beneficial book for those who feel their alcohol consumption needs moderating. There are no judgement calls or hard sells, just honest, practical advice and alternatives for those who wish to implement them.
Excellent support tool.......2007-04-10
This book is an excellent tool for anyone concerned about their drinking habits, yet doesnt feel the need for AA.
I believe it is beginning to help me make some lifestyle changes for the good.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has any doubts about their drinking or another family member or friend.
MM-Responsible Drinking.......2006-02-01
Anyone who has questioned or been surprised about the amount they drink will not feel alone after reading this book.
Good, not great........2005-11-14
AA is not for everyone, despite what you may hear. If the 12-step cookie cutter approach leaves a bad aftertaste, this book may help.
It's true that one of the founders did drive drunk and kill someone. What one of the reviewers fails to mention is that it was after she had returned to A.A. and was practicing abstinence.
A.A. does work. For about 5 percent of those try it, (according to AA's own studies), but there are alternatives for those not sold on the Big Book.
Finally answers the question: What is responsible drinking?.......2005-10-02
How many people actually know what a standard drink is? Or, how much alcohol is safe to consume? Or what acceptable drinking behavior is? Very few. In our neo-puritan, abstinence-only society, there are few guidelines for sensible, pleasurable indulgence.
Studies on abstinence-only sex education prove it a failure. Similarly, limited studies on abstinence-only treatment for drinking problems show it less effective than offering choice. Perhaps the message that one is "powerless over alcohol" undermines all efforts to exercise any form of reponsibility vis a vis drinking. It certainly provides a convenient excuse.
If you have questions about drinking, but don't want alarmist dogma; if you believe human beings are capable of making responsible choices; buy this book!

Helpful tips-delicious recipes!.......2007-04-10
Meredith McCarty has succeeded in providing us with a guide to healthy dessert making while being very conscientious of a totally vegan lifestyle. Everything we've tasted from the recipes in this book have been delicious and straighforward to make. The book's also packed full of explanations of how certain ingredients won't work, gives suggestions on ones that will and offers gorgeous pictures of the finished product.
I highly recommend this to all vegans looking for desserts to serve family and friends alike!
must have.......2006-12-12
If you are cutting back on sugar and missing dessert this book is an excellent introduction. With easy to follow receipes that even beginners can cook. And even the more advanced can use this as a jumping off point.
Great Recipes for the health minded baker!.......2005-03-04
I love this cookbook. It has great information on all types of sweeteners and goes through many different types of oils and flours too. The main ingredients she uses in this book for sweeteners are brown rice syrup, barley malt syrup and some have maple syrup. It is pretty easy to find the ingredients and the directions are easy to follow although I am a fairly experienced baker so I do "add lib" when I cook and find that the end result has been great. I made the lemon cake with the sauce but minus the lemon tofu cream because I have a slight allergy to soy. Tofu is definately a required taste and she uses very little in this book and it can easily be omitted.
She does use carob in some recipes so if you do not like carob you can just use cocoa powder or non dairy tropical source chocolate chips. There are quite a few color photos too.
I look forward to making more recipes from this book and the book is worth buying just for the eye opening info she provides on chemicals and how some of our ingredients are processed. It really motivates you to try to find a more natural alternative.
sweet & natural - disappointing.......2004-08-09
i bought this book with high hopes as we are making the switch to whole foods cooking/baking but do enjoy our desserts. unfortunately, i will have to keep looking - this is not it. the author seems more interested in presentation than taste. i spent $7 for tofu for the lemon cake and we didn't care for it at all - we threw it away. i followed the recipe to the letter and thought there were too many steps not to mention the taste was bland and the cake didn't keep well. i just made the cranberry bread again following the recipe to the letter and was very disappointed in the results. it didn't raise over 1 1/2 inches with 2 tsp. of the aluminum free baking powder plus baking soda!! i realize whole foods cooking/baking is different and the results may be somewhat different but i was not prepared for that much difference.
Choc. Chip Cookies Could Be Better.......2004-06-25
We made the Chocolate Chip Cookies from p. 221, which are vegan. They had a funny taste from the brown rice syrup (sort of sour after) and the use of water. They didn't have enough fat, or flavor for me. There are no eggs or milk or butter in this recipe, just oil, and the chocolate chips are malt sweetened. I applaud her efforts, and will try some others in this book. Desserts that are fairly healthy are a worthy pursuit. And many sound delicious.

How to put the sacred into words.......2007-01-04
Where most of us fail, Teresa somehow has found a way to put those feelings of reconnection into words. While the story of returning her friend, McKenzie, back to her wild heritage is wonderful, this book goes much deeper. Through Teresa's story we feel her returning to her own people, her own roots. More importantly to me, however, is how she puts into words the emotions of those of us who only find our peace through the natural world, a world where being safe behind closed doors is the worse kind of life there is. She tells about how in the wildness of the wilderness, freedom is not safety, but joy and sorrow more intense that the man made world most live in can ever offer.
She shows what most people struggle so hard to avoid, that one day all of us will fight for that one last breath that will never come. What we do with the breaths we have is what is important. Do we hide in our four walls while the wilderness disappears not only "out there", but in our souls as well? Or do we accept give away and live our lives to the fullest.
Teresa is not an author, but a story teller, something that has been sadly lacking in the sterile world we have created. I hope she continues to write for a long time.
True, Suspense, Heartfelt, Descriptive, Poetic, Journey.......2001-08-23
Teresa Martino, a graced author who can write and share her adventure with wolf and freedom, is a storyteller with humor, respect, and gift of art and word. It was like I was there with her as she lived this journey. Riveting, piercing, thought-provoking, pondering, and inspiring are adjectives to describe this book.
A true story of a wolf, her daughter, and woman, the author, who cross in each other's path of life. No preaching here. Beautiful physical descriptions of the land, the feelings, the sounds, the colors, the touch of wolf, and glimpses into the author's heart. I felt empathy for her questions she asked and struggled with her during her trials and vulnerabilities. The book goes beyond just another animal story to a tale of emotional questioning and searching by the author. A triumphant ending.
A MUST read. The book grows better and better with each chapter. I found myself reading so fast wanting to know how it ended.
Lyrical and Well-Told Story.......2001-08-04
I loved this book, the writing, the story and the spiritual adventure. I often think about having my own wolf following me on romps through the wilderness whenever I am out hiking alone. This book has some wonderful insight into the wolf mind and shows why a wolf is not a dog and wolves should not live in captivity. Alongside the wolf story is a great journey the author makes in seeking her own identity and place. I highly recommend it.
A Personal Account of Wolf Reintroduction.......2000-12-30
Teresa Tsimmu Martino writes a wonderful tale of her rescue of a wild wolf pup which she raises to be wild. Once old enough, Ms. Martino releases the wolf into the wilderness of Washington where it has survived and had her own litter.
Martino's writing is vivid and human and full of the emotion that courses through her veins. She is also a horse trainer and has great stories to tell of her life around horses in her most recent book.
So, buy this book; await its arrival with anticipation and then savour its story as you lose yourself in her words.
Awakening the Wilderness in My Heart.......2000-10-20
I am a hiker and avid outdoors woman living in Colorado. This book created a fire in my heart to be in, love and protect the "wilderness" in our lives. It brings tears to my eyes to remember the teaching and learning between woman and wolf. I am highly recommending this book to my book club for the January read. Her writing is vivid poetry - bringing the reader into the beauty and reality of nature.

Tricia Guild on Color

Book Description
Think natural, loosen up, pare down, color in, and above all, live well! These are the key words of the new country living, and no home better exemplifies this wonderful philosophy than decorator Tricia Guild's Tuscan farmhouse. A tour around this warm and wonderful home is the centerpiece in a richly photographed look at what defines the best contemporary design. The first section, "A New Attitude," pinpoints the main features of this current approach. Then, the intimate glimpse into Guild's private world, as well as four other houses, spotlights her love of natural materials, her uncluttered arrangements, her loose approach to fabric, and bold use of color--as well as the inspiration she draws from the surrounding landscape. Rooms glow with brightness; her kitchen bursts with fresh produce; inside and out, tables are laid with embroidered cloths, jugs of garden flowers, vibrant mismatched plates, and delicious local foods. Finally, "Living and Entertaining" is an exhortation to fill your world with pleasure, and to bring exuberance not only to your décor and design, but to all you do. None of the ideas is expensive, and every one is innovative, easy, and life enhancing!
Customer Reviews:
Simple, Rustic, Plain with Some Paint & Prints.......2006-04-22
After reading the great reviews, it was shocking to see all the photos and ideas are actually very ordinary, simple and rustic, with a bit of bold paint here, a bit of fabric with prints there, nothing new or interesting. There's 57 pages of recipes that didn't look too original either. Why are so many books filled with mostly ordinary, simple ideas? They deem us to not already know them ourselves??
". . . to give a loose to your soul".......2006-02-25
"Painted Country" caught my eye at a time when COLOR had made a rather large splash in our community, a splash of blue - almost pastel, but unwelcome to some who dictate the 'fashion' of storefronts in this small tourist town. What a furor can rise if circumstances & the gods intersect! "Painted Country" is the answer to such bonfires in winter, and to give a lift to February, when dullish moments need bold colors, verve, exclamation points!
Tricia Guild is known at the founder of Designers Guild (in 1970), and for her exuberance in living. She is a lucky Londoner who can retreat to Tuscany. There an existence of nature-fed tranquillity balances the city portion of her life. With Britain well over the shoulder, the creative juices are free to boil & roil with purples, reds, oranges & even blues. The subtle hairs on grape leaves add a different texture and Guild encourages variety. This freedom "gives a loose to the soul" as a journalist friend once said. Tricia Guild's philosophy of living is best shared through views of her marvelous kitchen (p.54-61), and the food produced.
Nonie Niesewand supplied the text, and Gilles de Chabaneix the stunning photographs. Their work is impressive, in part because the book represents more than a lapful in size. It has never been my desire to grow a citified atmosphere at a rough, rural address. I appreciate "spare" decoration of rooms anywhere. In the city what is called 'sophisticated' might be written off as 'shabby' in a summer cabin. One's spirit, I believe, is revived and lifted quite successfully by strategically located blocks of color. See the chair on p.46 made gorgeous with orangey, red blooms in needlepoint. It is the inspiration for Tricia Guild's painting (p.44) of field flowers reminiscent of Cezanne /OR/ did the inspiration work the other way around?
You will want to own this book, and study it often: the dining room (p.50-51), the deep sills everywhere to allow one more surface for carefully arranged flowers. The photographs of vegetables are charming; actually they will take your breath away! Then the prepared foods that caught my eye, including a tomato & zucchini pizza (p.152 that demonstrates how a Tuscan might prepare this recipe. I am further tempted by the linguine with broccoli, olives and capers (p.156). When you see the table setting of unmatched majolica dinner plates (p.174) you will yearn to become a collector.
Reviewer mcHAIKU predicts that you will inhale deeply the luminous colors & uncluttered arrangements, and will go forth to "GIVE A LOOSE TO YOUR SOUL"!
A book to enjoy!.......2002-10-25
This is a large book by size and it has 350 color photographs!
You get a feel for southern Europe through it and you even get to try some of the nice country type of foods at the end, mostly sallads, healthy stuff :-) It's beautiful and as inspirational as any book by Tricia Guild can be...somewhere to rest your eyes and calm down I'd say, without having to go to the countryside yourself. And then it gives you back that energy that only nature can give you!
beautiful photos.......2001-08-30
This book is filled with higly saturated photos of painted furniture and rich fabrics. Though the title is "Country," I would also recommend it for the modernist. Included in the back of the book are fresh summer recipes.
Definitely a book to leave on the coffe table!.......1999-02-18
Tricia Guild has done it again with this stunningly photographed book of interiors of her own, and other's Italian country homes. With not a hint of pretense, we get to roam through these houses with that feeling that we, too may be able to achieve "the look". Not just an interiors text, Ms Guild takes us into the vineyards and kitchens of Tuscany, making this more of a "lifestyle" guide. This is a book that lets you become lost to another place and time - browse for a while, and be sure not to put it away in the bookshelf - leave it on the coffee table as I do!

Book Description
Joe Okonkwo has produced a volume of poetry that is actually a mosaic of African-American and Gay issues. This riveting collection covers everything from Jazz and sex, to politics and dating; from racism within the Gay community, to black on black racism. There are poems about the journey from depression to wholeness and poems about exuberant gay men flouncing about the streets wearing only silk boxer shorts and argyle socks.
This volume has a little of everything including poignant tributes to Jazz greats Ethel Waters and Billie Holiday. Joe Okonkwo fearlessly tackles taboo subjects such as what some African-Americans really think about the ghetto, who really bears the blame for slavery and how expectations the Gay media sets forth affect those who don't--or can't--comply.
Milk Chocolate/Naked Moon is exactly what we've been waiting for: an unpredictable, page turning collection of poetry.
