Book Description
First published in book form in 1947, The Labours of Hercules comprises an even dozen mysteries starring Christie's most popular sleuth, the ever-dignified Hercule Poirot. The introductory chapter of the collection sets up the rest of the book. At a dinner party, another guest compares the labors of Poirot to those of Hercules, and the little Belgian is not amused. He has already decided to retire, but makes up his mind to take on 12 great cases each somehow reflecting the labors accomplished by Hercules as a farewell to crime solving. All of the cases are quite different from each other, from searching for a lost poet to hunting down a particularly ferocious murderer, from solving mysterious deaths of religious cult members to saving a young would-be politician from potential blackmailers. Frequent Christie interpreter Hugh Fraser brings stories like "The Cretan Bull" and "The Apples of the Hesperides" to dazzling life.

Great Service and Good Product.......2007-05-11
Can't get enough of the Hercule Poirot Mysteries? You've probably already experienced Hercule Poirot in book form, DVD version and on television, but here's a fourth method. It is great fun. I just pop one of these disks in my car CD player and my tedious communute to and from work becomes a time of pure enjoyment as I roll along the highway. The Labours Of Hercule Poirot is by far my favorite. As usual, Amazon did a great job of processing and mailing me this order in a timely manner. I highly recommend this product.
Agatha Christie Fan.......2006-03-08
I am probably too biased to review anything done by Agatha Christie. The story is well read, easy to understand and provided hours of enjoyable listening. Hercule Poiret, although not my favorite Christie character, is still an excellent character.

Highly recommended........2007-01-06
Winner of the Writer's Digest International Self-Published Book Awards, Widow's Weeds is the dark, haunting story of a famous eccentric woman, whose sudden death spawns a preponderance of chaos as every skeleton in her closet becomes exposed in the unyielding light of day. In the wake of her passing, one man dies, another goes mad, and a third encounters an unimaginable fate. Penned in a strongly visual style by speechwriter and radio journalist Kimberly Cifone, Widow's Weeds captivates the reader's attention with its domino-like unfolding of tragic consequences. Highly recommended.
Excellent little novel.......2006-07-06
A must read, especially if you live around Philadelphia area. But either way, it kept my attention, and was quiet entertaining.

Tens of thousands of athletes know Beryl Bender Birch, Wellness Director for the New York Road Runners Club, as the teacher who showed them that yoga could protect them from injuries and improve their athletic performance. In Power Yoga, the first book on astanga yoga, a unique form of hatha yoga designed to build strength and stamina, Birch brings the ancient spiritual and physical practice to the West. Through anecdotes, detailed instructions, and hundreds of illustrations, Birch provides a total workout plan that's perfect for elite athletes, weekend warriors, and people just starting a fitness program. The Power Yoga workout combines dynamic breathing with a series of strong, flowing movements that create a high-heat, high-energy workout. "It (Power Yoga) will work on your body, your mind, your whole self," says Birch. The end result is a stronger, more flexible body; increased endurance, discipline, and self-awareness; and better overall health and fitness. -- Ellen Albertson
Book Description
THE OFFICIAL YOGA PROGRAM OF THE NEW YORK ROAD RUNNERS CLUB

Beautiful photographs and clear instructions guide you through this effective and popular routine.
Based on the classical and original yoga system called astanga, Power Yoga is a complete mind and body workout that develops concentration and reduces stress. With its focus on mindful breathing and body heat, Power Yoga goes beyond the relaxation benefits of traditional yoga to offer a route to health and fitness that athletes of all levels will embrace.

A Good Read for Beginners.......2007-06-17
I agree with one of the other reviewers, this book does a very good job at breaking down the primary series adding an abundance of modifications to fit any level. In fact I bought this book about 6 years ago and learned the Ashtanga Yoga primary series primarily from this book.
My only gripe is there is not a visual or cards of the sequence of practice as in Beryl's second book on Power Yoga. I recommend both books and David Swenson's Ashtanga Yoga, which has a great spiral binder (designed specifically for at home practice) for those looking to learn practice at home or supplement practice from classes.
Power Yoga .......2006-11-02
This is a great book that really details how yoga can benefit you and goes through the entire Ashtanga series. Great for beginners and yoga vets!
A great book for those already in shape.......2004-08-15
I am personally having a great experience with this book. The explanations are clear, the pictures are very helpful, and the beginner modifications are encouraging since most people including myself do not start out as very flexible. After reading some of the other reviews, however, I've concluded that the book is probably most helpful for those who are already in good physical condition. Some of even the beginning asanas take a moderate amount of strength. If you do not think that you can do 5-6 pushups or hold your weight with your arm strength, it would probably be better for you to take a class where a teacher could spot you and give you more specific instruction.
Does the best job of breaking down the Primary Series.......2003-10-17
As a previous reviewer said the Primary Series should not be learned solely through a book. This book does the best job of breaking down most of the difficult poses, offering great modification poses to help work a person into the pose that's part of the series. For instance the half bound lotus forward bend is by not means an easy pose (at least not for me). Bender offers beginner and intermediate modifications to help you work to the full version of the pose. She does this throughout the book giving the reader a chance to build up his/her endurence while he/she is learning the series. I used this book in conjunction with Julie Pegrum's "Ashtanga Yoga: The Complete Mind and Body Workout" Book. Together they are the next best thing to going to class. Overall, I have seen nothing better that helps a person learn the Primary Series, and at the same time, making finishing it semi-attainable.
good but as a supplement.......2003-01-07
This is a great book HOWEVER it's best used, as another reviewer stated, as a supplement to a class or video instruction. I learned yoga (beg.- intermed.) from a book by the American Yoga Assoc. and had no trouble following that one. After 9mos. of doing "traditional" yoga at least 3x/week, I purchased this book with the idea that it would be very similar, just a little more intense. Wrong. If you're not intimately familiar with all of the poses beforehand, it's hard to follow due to the layout of the book. Will go back to this book after perfecting poses via video.

Weekend athlete.......2006-01-26
I received this book as a Christmas gift from my daughter. I was skeptical at first that Pilates could help out a weekend softball player like myself. As a new years resolution I work out 3 times per week at home. Through the first 3 weeks of the year I have lost 10lbs via working out with IM=X and a new diet. It's a great workout and I don't have to worry about injuring my arm lifting heavy weights at the gym. Thanks to McNergney for this wonderful program.
Great for Golf.......2006-01-26
On the recommendation of my personal trainer, I started learning IM=X Pilates to improve my golf game. Through regular IM=X Pilates workouts I have been able to improve my core strenght an increase my drives by about 30 feet.
I bought this book at the recommendation of my trainer to have it complement the traditional IM=X reformer classes that I take when I can't make it to the gym. It's great to use at home and when I travel on the road for work. I've taken "traditional" pilates classes at another gym but they don't challenge me like IM=X.
Pilates for Men.......2006-01-25
I highly recommend this book to any men out there who are looking to get in shape. Traditional Pilates was created for dancers as a rehabilitation program (which is not the general male population).
I read this book thoroughly, and McNergney has created a strong pilates based program called IM=X. After trying the exercise routines I find this program to be very powerful and has helped me improve my "core strength" (lower back trunk muscles and abs). If I tried the traditional pilates moves I would probably end up on the couch with a strained back because of the dancer moves.
By supplementing the IM=X Program with some cardio (biking) I am in the best shape I have been in a long time. I also no longer have lower back pain. Being in shape is not about how big your muscles are (anyone can take steroids illegally to get big). If you're looking to do a exercise routine that actually is helpful, this is it.
very deceiving title.......2006-01-10
For men looking for books on the Pilates method, do not get fooled by this one. The exercises it are very loosely based in the Pilates method. Being a Pilates instructor, I am always seeing what is on the market in order to make recommendations to students in my classes on materials to use at home.
A Pilates book aimed at men is long over due . . . I was completely disappointed when I sat down and started reading this through. For the reviewer who was not seeing results he wanted in the Pilates method (six pac abs, big muscles, etc.), you have been miseducated on what to expect from doing it. So please, don't "dis" the Pilates method because you didn't see visible results. And, you were probably doing it wrong.
This exercise routine may work for some, but if you are new to Pilates, this is a far cry from the real thing. I would suggest doing a search on Amazon's search engine and getting the other Pilates for Men book that appears. It is far better.
Book Description
Amma ("mother") is an Indian housewife and grandmother who began posting recipes for her children on the Internet when they moved overseas and missed her cooking.
From this simple beginning in 1996, Ammas.com has grown to be the world's largest and most successful Asian food and lifestyle Web site, audited at more than 2 million hits per month. Demand for a cookbook from site users has led to this superb collection of genuine Indian recipes adapted for international use. These include traditional vegetarian, chicken, lamb, and game dishes, vegetables, dals, rices, breads, and seafood. Let Amma introduce you to crayfish in a creamy curry, stuffed eggplant, golden fried coconut rice, cashew nut curry, and other exquisite new dishes and exotic flavors you can create at home.
Recipes are presented in easy-to-follow steps, with explanations of Indian spices, flavorings, and cooking techniques, and every dish is photographed in color. Amma also provides delightful anecdotes of Indian village life, which convey the warmth, love, and traditional values of her upbringing.
Not a book for chefs, full of recipes you might find in an Indian restaurant, instead Amma offers recipes for cooks, with food from a mother's kitchen.
A dish I associate with the towering clouds and pounding rain of the monsoon, my mother's minced lamb curry was unique in our village. All the other women cooked this dish as they would any other meat curry. But Amma added a few eggs, which poached in the heat of the frying pan. The aroma of the lamb would mix with the tenderly cooked eggs. . . . Memory also serves a dab of butter, some yogurt, and a large spoon-ful of lightly cooked vegetables with these monsoon-enriched meals.-from Amma's Cookbook
Amma is the pseudonym for a southern Indian housewife who wishes to remain anonymous, but who is known through her Web site to millions.
Customer Reviews:
A book to treasure.......2005-01-04
About a year ago, I bought Amma's Cookbook. Now, almost a year later, having cooked my way through all the recipes, all I can say is, well, it is a damn good book. Practical instructions, a sincere narration and delicious end product - well, what more do you want from a cookbook?
You need every spice ever created to use this!.......2004-09-11
I am an American woman married to an Indian man. "Amma" is talked about so much that I thought this book would be great. And the pictures DO look great, but I never have all the ingredients to make more than a handful of the recipes! I have a lot of Indian spices at home, but this calls for weird spices that I've never even seen in Indian grocery stores.
The recipes are not difficult, but as I said, the ingredient list is exhaustive. I would not recommend this book unless you have obscure spices in your kitchen (this goes WAY beyond cardamom, turmeric, and cumin!!!)
Good, but many recipes don't work.......2004-03-02
I like this book and have developed several great recipes using it as a good starting point. I'll get right to the point of my quibble. The measurements for the liquid portion of several of the recipes is way off, as in totally off. For instance: in the recipe for Malai Kofta one part of the recipe calls for making a paste of several ingredients using 1 cup of water. When I first saw this I thought "Way too much water". However as a first run I followed the recipe exactly. As expected the blend was a watery soup, not at all a paste. I arrived at the right paste by dry grinding the ingredients then regrinding them in a mortar using 1/8 cup water. Perfect paste. So the recipe in the book was off by a factor of 800% on the liquid required. I experienced the same problem of way too much liquid on other recipes. The liquid portions are so far off I've wondered if there is a translator mixing up tablespoons with cups. I've started ignoring the liquid quantity in the recipe and using what seems right to me. Following that path the results have been excellent, so the book is worthwhile. I just have a problem with a cookbook that is so wildly off on such a key ingredient. If you're an experienced Indian cook who can use your own judgement this book is a lot of fun. If you're looking for a cookbook where the actual recipe followed exactly produces good results, look elsewhere.
surprised!!!.......2003-10-20
It is so refreshing to come across a cookbook where the cook is fondly and confidently explaining the intricacies of cooking without ever revealing how many pakoras she/he can snaffle down while waiting for the remaining batches to be fried! And, thank God, there is no chastising of food fascists (the current favourite word of celebrity cooks), no repetition of "use the freshest of ingredients only (How many of us go to the grocery store and pay to buy wilted lettuce?)". You get the point. Delightful to read , Amma (is it really a woman?)seems to be a brilliant cook. Just try her Dum ka Murgh - were Proust to eat that as a child (apart from the Madelienes), literature would have been richer by, hopefully, another memory recall and another million words! I cannot recommend this enough.
Very Good Buy.......2003-03-02
I like this book. The tips on the side are very good and the recipes are authentic..
Book Description
In 1936, Quentin Young, a 22-year-old Chinese American, led American socialite Ruth Harkness on a 1,500-mile expedition into the remote mountains of Sichuan. Braving warlords and primitive tribes, the duo captured a giant panda and brought it back alive, the first time a live panda had been seen by the Western world. Hunters and scientists assumed the pair had stolen the animal. When it became clear the find was genuine, Ruth Harkness became a celebrity. But Quentin Young, together with his brother and fellow guide, Jack, was swept into the chaos of World War II and became a spy. A few years ago, Michael Kiefer discovered Quentin, now elderly and living in the United States. The resulting book sets the record straight.
Customer Reviews:
Panda-monium!!!.......2006-02-23
If you are one of the many who has been smitten by our Baby Panda, Tia Shan, at the National Zoo in DC, and have read The Lady and the Panda, by V. Croke, or Ruth Harkness, here is a book that is a must read. Mrs. Harkness would have never been able to get the first panda to the US without help from the Young brothers, Quentin and Jack. Mr. Kiefer spent years speaking w/them, and they provide information and perspective that helps give more life & detail to very important characters that didn't get the recgonition they surely deserved. Great photo's wish there were more.
The authentic narrative of Ruth Harkness and panda.......2005-06-12
Though a movie and a new book have been based on the story of Ruth Harkness, Quentin Young and the expedition to find the first panda have appeared recently, both were inspired by Michael Kiefer's book, which is the real McCoy. Originally commissioned as a piece for the New Yorker, the manuscript was ultimately published as this book. In the meantime, Kiefer's exciting story based on his unique access to one of the principals, Quentin Young, inspired the other two projects. The film, the name of which I forget, twisted the story into total fiction, and the latest book is derived in large part from this one. So if you want to read a well-written great escape of an adventure story set in the context of place, politics, and history and with the imprimateur of George B.Schaller himself, Michael Kiefer's " Chasing the Panda: How an unlikely pair of adventurers won the race to capture the mythical white bear" is the one to read. The photographs from Quentin Young's archives are awesome, beautiful, and illuminate the lost world or the patrician Chinese of the day, as well as the expedition itself.
Interesting read.......2004-06-19
Although not exactly what I was expecting, this book was in interesting read about the Chinese naturalists and their involvement in how the West first came to know the giant panda. This book detailed many historical facts about how Western naturalists, with the aid of a couple of Chinese, moved through China and collected many specimens for display in the US. I recommend it to anyone who has a deep interest in the giant panda and the history behind our current love affair with these black and white bears.
Worthy Effort, But Polluted with Gossip & Inuendo.......2004-04-26
The characters and their true to life tale of adventure keep this book going, but the author has watched too much Hard Copy or Entertainment Tonight and seems to dwell on the sex lives and personal failures of many of the principals, which have nothing to add to the overall search for the pandas. He seems to have exploited his relationship with Quentin Young, which takes away from the dignity of the story. Nonetheless, I would recommend the book as an interesting read and one of only a few on the subject.
An Eclectic Escape, and in Non-Fiction.......2002-04-24
Kiefer provides an eclectic escape that covers nature, people, politics and history...and all within the confines of a true tale! I will never gawk at those cute bears the same way again, knowing the story of their "discovery" and what that story tells us of the specific times--and the general nature of people. The read is "light," yet one learns a bit along the way. This is my version of a nearly perfect summer read. A romantic "novel" for thinking persons.

The best book about the best Pope.......2006-09-05
This is the best book about John XXIII I have ever read. I read a biography about every Pope since 1846, and this was the best one. John XXIII was a saint, and this book clearly shows it.
It Touched My Heart.......2005-06-05
The peasant child who would be Pope...each stage of John XXIII's life recalled in a well directed manner, including some little known facts that were most interesting. His great devotion not only to God and his Church, but to mankind as well, revealed in profound ways. I was surprised that this simple, humble servant of the Lord was also a brilliant man with eloquence of speech and a compassion that reached across all walks of life and left its mark on humanity. An enigma who was at once a traditionalist with a passion for history, and also a reformer of the Church, with a keen sense of what was necessary to meet the demands of his modern day flock. Despite his elevated office, he remained a man who loved to talk to all peoples, and held in his heart a very special place for the downtrodden, the poor. His relationships with his family members were especially endearing. Most interesting was his role with the Jewish people during their darkest days.I could not put this book down! If my memories of Pope John from my childhood always seemed to touch my heart, my knowledge of him now has truly captured it! A gift from God whose Blessed presence in our world remains enduring. A must read for those interested in the Papacy, the Vatican, or simply a tender and exquisite story of one man's journey of Love. My deep thanks to the late author, Peter Hebblethwaite, and his wife Margaret for this gem!

Customer Reviews:
Pope John XXiii; a spiritual biography.......2001-06-01
A nice overview of the life of John XXiii, but less than an in depth analysis of his life, philospohy, accomplishments, quirks, and the times in which he lived. I found the portion of the book on the convening of the Ecumenical Council and his role in that process lacking. Nor was there much to explain/clarify his successes and problems working with and trying to lead the papal bureaucracy. It was a good overview, but I would love to be able to read a much more in depth biography of the life of John XXiii.
The Providence to Papacy.......2001-04-24
Many people know of the wonderful things Pope John XXIII accomplished as pope but many do not know of the road that lead to the papacy. Providence directed this simple, peasant man to become the pope and this account of that providence is superbly done. "We can deal with our differences if we focus on what we have in common." No wonder we now refer to him beatified as Blessed Pope John XXIII. His is certainly a wonderful example to follow.

A delightful book.......2007-01-31
Although it has taken so long in buying this book, I finally managed it and all John XXIII's high spirit is there forever.I really recommend the book. By the way, I first learn of the book in a print of Reader's Digest a long time ago and I loved it. Now, thanks to Amazon.com, I own the book.
