Agatha Christie ruleZ..........2004-07-11
The book is based on real murders done by a new Jack the Ripper during WWII, in London. Agatha Christie appears in a book, helping police inspector and pathologist solve the crimes. The author did thorough research and mentioned a lot of Agatha's novels (no spoilers included!). There are also many details about her life.
The book is an interesting read for Agatha Christie fans, and it plots a nice picture of London in the days of the war, but if you expect a whodunit novel, you will be disappointed. I recognized the killer the moment he was introduced, the police suspected him from the beginning and, finally, he was the guilty one. No twist in the plot, and even the murderer's motive is not revealed (mass murderers don't have a motive?)
If you compare The London Blitz Murders with A.B.C. Murders (Agatha's novel about the mass murderer), you can see why Ms. Christie was one and only...

Another quest for the redoubtable Kedrigern!.......2000-05-24
This is the fifth Kedrigern book by John Morressy, the others being A Voice for Princess, The Questing of Kedrigern, Kedrigern in Wanderland, and Kedrigern and the Charming Couple. In this book, with Princess' memory returning nibble by nibble, she suddenly remembers that a monster named "the Great Crawling Loathliness" is intricately involved in her past. Though he is no great fan of adventures, Kedrigern sets off with Princess to find this monster, and her past.
As with the earlier books, this work is excellent, light-hearted fantasy. I enjoyed the book immensely, but must say that it was not quite as exciting as the others were. If you have read the earlier books, then you must read this one as well.
OK!!!.......1999-08-18
I dont kown why I like the Kedrigern books so much, there storys in which nothing happens while the main character Kedrgern the wizard, moans about young people Today and his hate of travel. The comedy is low key to the point of invisibility. But I have red all the series over and over. Its just good lite entertainment I highly recomend them to anybody who needs to relax.

"Quit drinking on your own terms," urges Jerry Dorsman, addictions counselor and an alcoholic in recovery for over 16 years. Those terms, carefully outlined in How to Quit Drinking Without AA, shift the treatment model away from disease toward holism. In this upbeat and clearly written guide, Dorsman neither moralizes nor locks the alcoholic in the perception of powerlessness. "A part of you remains nonalcoholic, no matter how much you drink," Dorsman counsels. This book aims at reaching the strength and integrity of the nonalcoholic self.
Offering a refreshing look at the problem, Dorsman emphasizes habit over disease. If drinking is a learned behavior, it can be unlearned. Each chapter contains worksheets designed to penetrate the alcoholic's denial and exercises to assess the problem. Five simply stated steps integrate psychological and physical realties. A chapter on healing details a regimen of healthy eating, physical exercise, and great activities to substitute for drinking. A chapter on renewal offers auxiliary therapies to drug and alcohol treatment such as acupuncture, massage, and tai chi. How To Quit Drinking Without AA will appeal to those who are ready to take charge of their recovery, seeing it as nothing less than the means to change one's life.

Sure - Give It a Shot.......2007-09-26
If it works for you - that is, if you stop drinking, and stay stopped - then great.
If it doesn't, you can always go to AA and get and stay sober.
(Whole lot of misconceptions about AA out there. Really, you don't have to believe or think anything in order to be there. Many people don't like AA simply because the very idea of it threatens their drinking. And drinking is something they don't actually want to stop doing; they would just like the pain and suffering to go away and still keep drinking.)
Me, I haven't had a drink or a drug in 23 years, and my life is much the better for it. (And AA was and remains a fine help in that.)
Didn't work me either.......2007-03-14
I read the book a while ago, didn't finish it, and it was interesting but I didn't find very helpfull. They have go on these, from what I thought ridicoulous diets. Anyway, I might give it another go and read it.
A Little Too Black & White.......2007-02-02
The title of this book, "How to Quit Drinking Without AA", assumes a key premise - that quitting drinking is the paramount thing for an alcoholic. The title does not mention that its intended audience is the alcoholic, but if one is not alcoholic, then they probably have not come to this book for help. If one is, then the solution they seek must be one that is effective for their disease. That said, I'm writing this review from the alcoholic point of view, rather than some other type of heavy drinker.
If quitting drinking were the paramount thing in solving the disease of alcoholism, then the solution would be simple. Eliminate the physical cravings that are set up by the physical addiction. Any garden variety detoxification unit is your answer - and any local hospital will have a competent detox unit. But, frankly, if all you need is detox, then you're not dealing with the disease of alcoholism.
Alcoholism has less to do with drinking itself, than it does with the root causes that lead an alcoholic to drink. Why would a perfectly sober alcoholic, not suffering the cravings that are symptomatic only of physical addiction to drink, choose to pick up that first drink that then leads to re-establishment of the addiction? It seems like madness - and, it is.
Any alcoholic who has broken the bonds of craving, simply to find themselves led back to the whole vicious cycle, knows the problem isn't simply about stopping drinking. Alcoholics are driven back to that first drink by something beyond physical addiction alone. The only effective type of treatment for alcoholism, then, has to involve something something to treat that obsession that leads one back to pick up that first drink.
Bottom line, AA does not claim to be the ONLY solution to the problem of alcoholism - simply that it has a solution that works for a great number of alcoholics. Perhaps the fellow who wrote this book is onto something - perhaps not. In either case, it will have nothing to do with whether someone should or should not try AA. Nor should this be a subject which is treated with a black and white worldview of "this won't work" - because, when one is at the bottom of their despair, such a worldview could cost their life.
I hope that the individual who comes to rely on this book will find a solution that works. But if they don't, please remember that there are other options.
Helped me !.......2006-12-14
After having alcohol destroy my life for the past 17 years, I finally wised up and said the hell with this. I'm an atheist so I figured that AA wouldn't be the right choice for me, so I purchased this book and set my mind on defeating the grip alcohol had on me.....I WON! It has been 6 months now without a drop of alcohol, I feel great! If I can do it, anyone can. I highly recommend this book....good luck to anyone trying to quit, You CAN do it.
quit for good.......2006-10-06
I read this book and more like it after trying aa three times in one year. Finally heard ( from an Amazon review ) about Schick Shadel Hospital in Seattle. 10 days will stop all cravings. Just got back from treatment in oct 06. Came back a non drinker. This program saved my life. This book was helpful for post treatment ideas but not a lifesaver like Schick Shadel.

CA Kosher Cookbook.......2007-01-19
This cookbook rocks! I purchased it when I was first married, and couldn't cook...a situation not much improved 15 years later. Every recipe I've tried from this book has been a success. The traditional potato latkes in particular are a must have every Hanukkah...people who haven't had latkes since Grandma swear mine are the best. This book is my secret. (Shhh! Don't tell!) I've given many copies as gifts to several friends, whether they keep Kosher or not...it's that good. I even had to buy a secod copy for myself when my sister's luggage accidentally grabbed mine on her way home...it's the best!
love this cookbook!.......2006-05-12
So far I've had great success with the first three cakes I've made, and the essence of celery soup was so yummy. I love this book and would recommend it without hesitation.
Recipes You Can Count On!.......2001-10-18
This cookbook is one of my most prized possesions! I refer to it for every holiday from menu planning to recipes. I have yet to find a recipe that was not wonderful! My favorites are Brisket in Foil, and the Roast Chicken with Farfel Stuffing for Passover. The Mock Chopped Liver is unbelievable, and the Plum Chicken is a Shabbat favorite at our house. This is a fabulous addition to your Jewish Cooking library... a "must have"!
The Best Kosher Cookbook You'll Ever Need.......2001-04-13
Terrific traditional and contemporary cooking, with a lighter California twist. THIS IS THE BEST KOSHER COOKBOOK -- MAYBE THE BEST COOKBOOK OF ANY KIND WHATSOEVER -- THAT YOU MIGHT EVER OWN. Every recipe works, because the people who put it together genuinely triple-tested each entry, and if it didn't get A-plusses from all three cooks, it didn't get in. I probably own 50 cookbooks, and this is one of the top three I use! Try the chocolate marble squares, the sesame chicken, the apricot noodle kugel, the gefilte fish, the chicken soup, the honey cake . . .
The best cookbook I own; fabulous, fabulous!.......2000-05-26
I borrowed my mother's copy of this book...and still haven't given it back. If you've ever wanted to know how to make the perfect Jewish chicken soup, matzoh balls, brisket, yummy chicken dishes, and the perfect kugel, this book will be your guide. Haven't figured out that perfect dish to bring to the potluck? This book's got plenty of delectable ideas! I've been frustrated with other Jewish cookbooks that offer confusing recipes with strange ingredients, but this one keeps everything simple and delicious. It's by far the cookbook I turn to most during the week and when guests come over. This book also includes a large array of kosher Chinese recipes (from sweet & sour chicken to kung pao chicken & beef). We are not kosher, but love all the recipes nonetheless.
Book Description
Each card in this fully-illustrated 78-card deck is a fantastically realistic image of a fairytale feline world where Baroque cats link and sashay through gardens, palaces, inns and theatres. All sorts of incidents take place, and each card seems to carry a whole story within it.
The lively and engaging companion book discusses the backgrounds and meanings of each image, with simple instructions on how to read the deck - reading with "reversals" is included, and as well as popular spreads, a challenging new spread "The Cat's Tale" is described. There is also a charming and enlightening section on the cats' interpretations of the cards.
This may be the most "readable" cat tarot ever. It is certainly one of the most lavishly and lovingly illustrated. A must for anyone who loves costumes, castles or cats - not to mention tarot!
Note: Deck is also available separately, packaged with informative booklet.

So Precious.......2007-07-04
This is my favorite tarot deck. It is just too cute. There are a wide array of cute cats wearing elegant clothing. It is by far one of the nicest decks that I have seen in my time. It is a fun deck to use. Sometimes I take it out just to look at the cards. If you love cats then you need this deck.
Magnificent.......2006-09-11
This is one of the nicest decks I've owned. Great for reading. The images are gorgeous in the detail and the baroque customes are exquisite. The book is well written with Karen Mahony's delightful style and with a small "cat's interpretation" that brings a smile and also other ideas that can actually enhance a reading. Regarding one of the other reviews, there is a small art gallery in the town where I live in Denmark and they have a very true phrase as slogan, "Art is Work". This deck is a patient and enjoyable work of love, not the work of people that have "too much time on their hands". I own most of the products from the Magic Realist Press and am always forward to see the new products of these very nice and extremely talented people.
Exquisite Costumes and Animated Cats with Baroque Bohemian Sensibilities.......2006-06-01
"There seems to be some definite, if indefinable, link between cats and tarot...Could it be that people who are attracted to animals as enigmatic, untamable and yet at the same time as warmly emotional as cats also find some of these same qualities in the tarot?" - From the companion book
Karen Mahony and Alex Ukolov, the creative geniuses who run baba studio and Magic Realist Press in Prague, meld lavish costumes, posed cats, stunning Bohemian scenery, and quirky art and architecture in the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot. While many "cat decks" are mostly art decks, this gorgeous Tarot is a bona fide reading deck based on the Rider-Waite-Smith tradition.
Sumptuous fabrics and lovely detailing grace the costumes created by Finnish artist Anna Hakkarainen, while many of the "models" used in the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot were from the Prague Cats Rescue Home. Russian Blues, Tabbies, Persians, Siamese, Orientals, British Shorthairs, mixed breeds--all manner of hue and personality infuse these cards.
From the singing Abyssinian on the 3 of Pentacles to the wide-eyed kitten on the Sun card (which was coaxed to stand up on a horse with a teaspoon of cream!), the almost-human expressions surprise and delight. The fierceness of the Siberian on the Knight of Swords crackles with energy, and the sweet innocence of the 6 of Cups elicits an "awww!" for both its cuteness and the way it captures the essence of this card. The 9 of Cups is a hilarious card, with a British shorthair licking his lips in snarky Puss in Boots fashion. Ms. Mahony writes of this card:
"A somewhat portly and obviously very satisfied cat sits on a barrel in the public room of an inn, licking his lips. Behind him, carved in wood, can be a seen a scene of grand merrymaking."
Because some readers prefer Strength and Justice as either Trump 8 or 11, the deck designers have chosen to keep the Majors unnumbered. In addition to the standard RWS attributions and format, Ms. Mahony and Mr. Ukolov have also added a "good luck" card to the Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot: Hermes--which shows a golden statue of the god in a sunny courtyard while a lovely cat clothed in a sage green gown with white ruffles looks on. At first glance, it appears the card backings are fully reversible, but upon closer inspection, you can see the names Ukolov and Mahony on opposing sides. Because the script is so small, however, the backings still work wonderfully for reversals.
This deck, like their Fairytale Tarot, arrives in a box set with a beautifully bound soft cover book. With 207 pages, the glossy pages depict black and white reproductions of the cards as well as photos of fountains, sculptures, paintings, and various architectural elements found therein. Ms.Mahony's prose, as always, is a sheer joy to read, and she offers a brief overview of what's going on in the card, a "cat's interpretation", keywords and phrases for both upright and reversed meanings, and a lucid, in-depth explanation of the card. She also notes source materials for each card.
The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot is an excellent reading deck, and especially good as a deck for children or cat lovers. Because this deck follows RWS, it can be used in conjunction with many Tarot books, making it a great beginner's deck, as well. I've had quite a few insights with these cards, which I've jotted down in my Tarot journal. While an artistically exquisite Tarot that belongs in every art deck collection, it's an excellent deck for both reading and meditation.

The Cat's Meow.......2006-04-08
I have a growing collection of tarot cards. As beautiful and interesting as I find many of the decks, I usually return to the classic Rider-Waite for meditation and divination. As a cat lover and tarot deck collector, I was intrigued by "The Baroque Bohemian Cats' Tarot" and ordered it from Amazon. I found this deck to be a visual delight, which I sort of expected, but was suprised to find the interpretations of the cards in the accompanying book to be equally well-done. Unique and insightful, the interpretations given from the cat's point-of-view are charming, accurate and a whole lot of fun. For the tarot afficianado or cat lover, this tarot is the cat's meow.
Too much time on their hands........2005-06-11
Don't get me wrong; these cards are an art lover's paradise. Not only do you have a superb collection of cats, but you also get them placed in the art-loving world of the 17th century Dutch upperclass--with gabled houses, Vermeer-like paintings in the background, ornate, beautifully crafted furniture, etc. And with all this in mind, I sent a link to images of this deck to my wife, who thinks tarot decks are a bit of a joke. "Shovel, garbage bags. These people had too much time on their hands, and should have been out cleaning garbage from the roads," she replied.
For myself, with a collection of 46 tarot decks, this one doesn't make it. The images aren't for meditation, and the cats really get in the way of readings; also, while the deck is clearly patterned after Rider-Waite, a lot of the detail has been sacrificed to the cats and background.
So who should buy it? Lovers of the 17th century artworld, and catlovers. But for tarotists, either into the tarot as a tool of personal exploration or divination, there are far better places to look.

Horticulturists, students, and dedicated home gardeners will be familiar with Armitage's authority on this topic from his more technical Manual of Annuals, Biennials, and Half-Hardy Perennials. That volume was singled out as a winner of the Choice Academic Book Award, the American Horticultural Society Book Award, and the Garden Writers of America Golden Globe Award. While this new offering is a perfect pictorial companion to the Manual, it also stands alone with its personal commentary and inspiring advice on the most interesting, important, or overlooked plants. Armitage selects proven specimens from nearly 200 genera of plants and evaluates their garden-worthiness and sheer beauty. With humor, authority, and a wealth of practical experience, Armitage offers invaluable insights into those plants that truly earn their keep — and a few that do not! He has illustrated the entries with more than 1300 stunning color photos, rounded out by more than two dozen helpful lists of plants suitable for particular situations or uses, including plants for cool-summer areas, plants for dry situations, edible plants, container plants, shade plants, vines, and flowers for cutting.
Customer Reviews:
Another excellent book by Allan Armitage and Timber Press.......2004-03-04
Mr. Armitage is following the format utilized by his earlier book "Armitage's Garden Perennials" and Michael Dirr's "Dirr's Hardy Trees and Shrubs", providing frank information of common and obscure annuals. Comments such as "Bananas...If you are reading this and are not thinking, 'this guy is nuts!', then you are an open-minded gardener, and we can drink beer together." are what makes this a good book. But the pictures are outstanding. If this book had no words other than the description below the picture, it would be an outstanding book. I now have all the reference I need along with "Armitage's Manual of Annuals, Biennials, and Half-Hardy Perennials". I just need a bigger bookshelf....

Book Description
With additional material by Geoffrey Heard and the original foreword by advertising guru the late David Ogilvy, this is a book for anyone who has a say in what appears in print and needs to know whether, as well as looking good, it will do its job by being read.
Out of print for several years, this expanded and updated edition of the book is based on research carried out by the author in Sydney. Parts were first published in a brochure Communicating or Just Making Pretty Shapes by the Newspaper Advertising Bureau.
It created a furor in the publishing and advertising industry because while it supports some old mores, it demolishes others. As David Ogilvy says in the foreword: "Hitherto designers have had to rely on their guesses as to what works best... all too often they guess wrong. Thanks to Colin Wheildon they no longer have to guess. No guesswork here. Only facts."
Previously published as Type & Layout: How Typography and Design can Get Your Message Across or Get in the Way, by Strathmoor Press, Inc., Berkeley, California, USA. ISBN 0962489158
Customer Reviews:
An indispensable guide for typography and layout.......2006-09-04
As stated in the beginning of Type & Layout, this in "...not a book about opinions, it reports the results of nine years of hard-nosed, rigorous research." For anyone working in publishing, this book is an indispensable guide for using typography and layout that ensures maximum comprehension and readability.
Colin Wheildon covers a wide range of topics including the readability of serif vs. sans-serif body type, upper and lower case vs. ALL CAPS, black vs. color body text, and much more. The conclusions in this book are clear, the supporting research data is convincing and the examples provided are enlightening.
The only thing I don't like about this book is the horrible cover design (front and back) and the ad for other Worsley Press books in the back. As David Ogilvy states in the forward, the person who ignored the rules presented in this book "should be burned in oil." In any case, I highly recommend this book if you have never read this before.
An essential for book designers and publishers.......2006-04-05
This classic offers not opinions but facts based on surveys. It is one of those books I deem as an essential for my publishing library. No other book covers the subject with such clarity and credibility. It is a must-have for anyone involved in the layout and design of the printed word, whether a book, a magazine or
an advertisment. As a typesetter and publisher I refer to it often.
Disappointing new edition.......2005-11-09
I adored the first edition of Type & Layout. When I saw it was being reprinted, I promptly bought copies for every graphic designer I know and wrote a glowing review of it for Amazon.com. Then I received my copy of this new edition, and I have deleted my glowing review to submit this much-dimmer one. Geoffrey Heard, who provided the "additional material" for this edition, has taken a readable, well-laid-out book and transformed it into a mess of drawings of eyeballs, arrows pointing every which way, scattered call-outs, multiple exclamation points and question marks, and unnecessarily dramatic pronouncements ("A shocker!"). Every one of Wheildon's rules is broken in the layout of this new edition, and Heard should be permitted nowhere near Photoshop. I wonder who decided that Weildon's book, which had been through four printings and stood the test of time, needed improvement, or that Heard was the guy to improve it. The good news is that most of Wheildon's original work remains intact. So, buy this book, ignore all the extraneous, messy, goofiness that Heard infused into it -- you'll know it when you see it -- and give it all of your designer friends with the disclaimer that it used to be a really great book.
type and layout: are you communicating or just making pretty shapes.......2005-08-30
finally a book that uses actual studies to determine the most easily read type and layout. great book.
Beyond Ogilvy.......2005-07-27
If you've ready Ogilvy On Advertising, you've been slightly introduced to some of the concepts in this book.
This however goes deep and covers so much more of the how and why. The book will revolutionize the way you look at the print/advertising world. You'll recognize all the garbage that's pumped every day, and you'll appreciate it when you come across a real layout gem.

Book Description
Room to Fly is a unique journal--or ongoing memoir--by a woman who traces the elusive contours of cultural perceptions East and West, welcoming us into the intimate geography of individual lives. The book takes its shape and direction from a tenet of Japanese Sumi painting: If you depict a bird, give it space to fly. Padma Hejmadi explores the human spaces surrounding language, landscape, literacy and illiteracy, music, dance, legend, the cadence of ancient craft, and the ceaselessly unfolding layers of family relationships. Part autobiography, part lively meditation, Room to Fly represents a new genre with an old diction. Hejmadi's spare, luminous prose combines lyricism with humor and intellectual rigor, drawing us from Bombay to the Bahamas, from Japan to New England, the Greek Isles to New Mexico.
