4 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-06-03

This book isn't bad. It's not great but it's not bad. I enjoyed how the author developed the characters. I feel like Ms. Jacobs didn't fully explain the back story but that's ok you get enough of it to figure out what's going on. I felt the ending was a little too out of the blue. It was weird. I think a lot of people will think they couldn't figure it out because it comes out of the blue. I enjoyed the female lead detective and her back story. You feel really connected to her and want her to come through in the end. I just felt it was wrapped up too fast without much explanation. I enjoyed it but not as much as I could have.

1 out of 5 stars Don't believe the reviews.......2006-11-11

This book is a sophmoric version of a who dunnit. I always read a book in one sitting, it took me 3 days to get through this one even though I skipped the boring pages.

The author spends many chapters setting up a character's character, yet still points out his actions (as if we wouldn't recognize the conservative person doing something conservative)everytime he does something within character that is important to the plot.

I read more sophisticated books in the 4th grade.

5 out of 5 stars exciting story, memorable characters.......2006-01-13

I found this to be an engaging and quick-paced book. The story line moves along swiftly with many twists and turns (yes, some of them not so surprising in retrospect, but heart-stopping nonetheless), but it was the characters that really hooked me and stayed with me after the fact. Sam is a down-to-earth, believable guy who finds himself caught in a situation he doesn't know how to deal with. Hannah, the cop, is believably flawed and human, and all the more likable for it. I'd love to see a sequel to this book but I know it's a single title. I'm going to search out the author's previous books because I think I've discovered a new favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Versatile Author.......2005-12-07

Jonnie Jacobs proves once again what a versatile author she is. This is not a book in any of her usual series, yet it is still as well-written and as full of nail-biting suspense as her other books. I can't wait for the next book by this great author!

5 out of 5 stars nail-biting, page turning suspense.......2005-11-27

I have read every book Jonnie Jacobs has written, and this is one of her best yet. It is not a Kali or Kate book, but a stand-alone thriller, that kept me on the edge of my seat until I was finished. The characters were real people I felt I could root for, and the story was so suspenseful, I almost couldn't stand it! What I don't understand is why Jonnie Jacobs isn't high on the best seller list with books so well-written and involving. I am just sorry I will have to wait until her next book comes along.

    Book Description

Before being sentenced to three life terms for the murder of Bristol newlywed Shirley Banks in April 1989, John Cannan was convicted of the disappearance of Suzy Lamplugh in 1986. After Cannan's conviction, the Lamplugh case was closed. Yet to this day, Cannan denies his involvement in the Lamplugh case and protests his innocence in the murder of Shirley Banks—his appeal has been dismissed. Drawing on the latest psychological profiling knowledge developed in America by the FBI and, most importantly, an intense three-year correspondence with Cannan, this book provides a chillingly personal and comprehensive portrait of a complex and intelligent man.

From the supplier: Richard Jewell spent nearly three months as a suspect in the bombing of Atlanta, Georgia's Centennial Olympic Park in 1996, although he was not formally charged. During this period, Jewell was subject to mass media speculation about his guilt and aspects of his private life. However, defamation in such cases is difficult to prove. People conducting criminal investigations should keep their knowledge private until suspects are charged.

              5 out of 5 stars Pure magic..........2007-01-24

You don't even have to have read the first Kedrigern book to enjoy this second one by John Morressy (I haven't). Kedrigern, Princess, and the supporting cast are all wonderful company to spend a night with. The plot is serviceable, though essentially a framework to hang the gags and nice characterizations on, resulting in a light enjoyable novel. I'm eagerly going to find the rest of this series now!

              5 out of 5 stars On the road again...with Kedrigern & Princess.......2006-07-04

While attending the Wizcon, Princess convinces Kedrigern (who abhors crowds and noise) to host a party in their suite. The festivities start out promisingly but then Bess the Wood Witch's potent brew inebriates the attendees and a magical duel breaks out, the end result being the accidental re-spelling of Princess back into a toad. With the aid of his former teacher and a guilt-ridden Bess, Kedrigern is given a lead for a remedy: seek out Arlebar, an ancient wizard and expert with transformation spells. Now the stay-at-home wizard and his enchanted wife must hit the open road. During their trek, they face various magical hazards (a duplicitous sorceress, a cacodemon, drunken giants, a semi-sentient mist...) and the ever-vexing ordeals of travel as they wend their way thru treacherous, sinisterly-named places such as the Barren Mountains, the Dismal Bog, the Dark Wood, the River of Misery, and the Desolation of the Loser Kings. Finally, they must push on beyond the Inn of the Outer Edge, where lies the border between normal reality and...Other Places, including a strange world where magic is nonexistent (and where Kedrigern begins to have all his 166 years or so quickly catch up to him). En route, they are saddled with the undesired company of a stowaway frog prince, a spoiled princess and a bedraggled band on a magical quest. To top it all off, there's a confused cameo by Death. And when they finally get to Arlebar, Keddie and Princess are alloted only 10 minutes of his time. Really, it all seems a bit much for a retiring wizard who prefers to bask in the simple comforts of home. Ah, but then again, love is a difficult and demanding taskmaster.

The Questing of Kedrigern is the second full-length novel in the Kedrigern series and, like its predecessor A Voice for Princess, is as entertainingly whimsical and episodic. Morressey continues to dabble in sometimes clever, sometimes groan-inducing (but still fun) wordplay and puns (ie: a bespelled side street's first words are "We are not a mews"). He also pokes gentle jabs at several stalwart fantasy conceits, most notably the good old traditional "noble quest." There is even a sly prod at Chaucer's "The Canterbury Tales." The dragon who speaks in alliteration is cute. I particularly like the Inn of the Outer Edge, which is a nexus between worlds and serves as a kind of hub station for potential questers. And wait until you see where Kedrigern and Princess end up when Keddie employs his last-ditch escape spell. Ah, hell, I guess I'm giving it away when I say that the last-mentioned situation gives rise to my favorite Kedrigern line ever uttered: "I am Kedrigern of Silent Thunder Mountain, and I wish to order a cheeseburger and a double-thick chocolate malted." That's gold, in my opinion.

Anyways, sit back with a cool glass of whatever and a plateful of this-and-that, and read and revel in the civilized witticisms and breezy happenings set in a pleasantly enchanted universe. Kedrigern, your semi-amiable host, is still crabby and feeling put-upon; Princess continues to be a delight, even as a wistful toad; Spot is still...ugly. But, trust me, better company you will never find in the genre of well-mannered fantasy.

              4 out of 5 stars Fun.......2000-07-22

I realy injoy the Kedrigern books they are light happy stories which realy brighten up a dull day pure fluff but sometimes thats what I like to read I especily recommend them to anyone with to much stress or young adults

5 out of 5 stars Another hit for John Morresey.......1999-09-03

In this sequel to A Voice for Princess, Kedrigern's wife is re-enspelled, and they must set off on a new adventure to find the power necessary to return her form. Along the way, the pair meets up with interesting companions, and sees strange new lands. If you enjoyed the first book, then you will find this one just as witty and enjoyable.

              5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-08-15

This wonderful book set contains the first three books in John Morressy's wonderful Kedrigern series (the remaining two being Kedrigern and the Charming Couple, and A remembrance for Kedrigern). This highly entertaining series tells the story of a great wizard named Kedrigern of Silent Thunder Mountain. Kedrigern discovers a toad that is actually a beautiful princess turned into a toad by a bog-fairy. He breaks the spell, only to find that it was booby-trapped - the hapless princess ceases to be a toad with a princess' voice, and becomes a princess with a toad's voice! And so, Kedrigern sets out on adventure after adventure, seeking the magic necessary to return the princess to her normal form.

Overall, I must say that this is one of my most favorite fantasy series. The author does an excellent job of making the stories entertaining and yet gripping. I love these books and think that you will too. So, if you like your fantasy served up with wit and humor, then this book is for you!

Informative, scholarly presentation detailing the roles, responsibilities, and goals of the public health system from the federal agencies to the health department in your home town. Useful graphs and resources.

1 out of 5 stars Inaccurate and vapid.......2004-05-05

If you've ever had any actual experience in public health, you will probably recognize this book for the sham it really is. Public health systems in the real world just don't behave in the idealized way that Turnock describes. Moreover, Turnock is far too uncritical of HMOs, which consitently fail to provide actual assitance (not just theoretical assistance) to patients who need it. There is also no understanding at all here about the ways in which class differences affect dstribution of health care coverage, or any discussion of what we might be able to do about it.

The reader is left with a blinkered and rather utopian model of our current public health system - one that glosses over existing problems and presents only the most simplistic assessments. You might learn something if you're just beginning your public health studies, but for the rest of us, this book just isn't worth its exorbitant price tag.

              5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2000-10-13

Boy, I'm surprised at the reaction the book is getting! I have this book, and it's really quite good - I'm an MS-Epidemiology candidate, and it's really helped me with the fundamentals of the field. Incidentally, in response to the implication that Dr. Turnock is less than qualified to put forth an effort such as this, you might want to investigate that, you can find his impressive accompishments at the school's website. Board certified in Preventive Medicine and Public Health, and former director of the IDPH, to name a few? Sounds qualified to me. I'd recommend this book to any PH student or someone looking to learn the basics...I don't hesitate to rank this right up there with Gordis. Cheers!

4 out of 5 stars Good guide to understanding Public Health.......1999-12-09

This book really tells us what the Public Health is and how it works, as the title suggests. Even though data or statistics cited are somewhat outdated, you can understand the fundamental meaning of PH.

Tried more than 3 times to order this book from Amazon. Each time they have changed the shipping dates to months and months after I placed my order, over and over again until I finally cancel. After THREE attempts to buy this book I give up. This is ridiculous! Why are they selling this book on Amazon if they can't keep it stocked??????

5 out of 5 stars Ugly--But Delicious and Worth Their Weight in Gold.......2003-01-19

This book is a bit of a heartbreaker in these tight economic times: The best truffles--the revered white truffles of Alba, in Northern Italy--were going for about [ninety dollars] an ounce the last time I looked, or dared to look. Still, it's a good read. If you (like most of us) can't afford truffles but (like some of us) are still entranced by them, this books counts as 'armchair dining.' And if you can afford these gems, this book will help you buy intelligently. Not only are there many different kinds of truffle but these days 'counterfeit' truffles--second- or third-raters dragged in from Hungary and China--have been sneaked onto the market. The lore you need to to tell them apart (and what to do with them when you buy) is here presented by Rosario Safina, president of Urbani USA, the world's largest truffle importer. Safina and his co-auther, Judith Sutton, do a good job of presenting both information and recipes. Apart from genuinely useful information, they also impart some truly strange facts. Considering what truffles fetch on the market today, is it not strange for example that not so many years ago people were ashamed to eat them? They were poor folks' food--ugly, strong-smelling fungi hunted out by dogs and dug up from underground. Well, there was a time when New Englanders felt the same way about another poverty dish--lobster.

              5 out of 5 stars Accessible Luxury.......2003-01-15

I love truffles but I've always thought of them as something you order in restaurants, not use in home cooking. They're expensive and I didn't really know how to buy them, store them, how much to use, and all that. This very well-written book tells all--and now that there's no mystery and I'm not afraid of making an costly mistake, I will buy truffles and truffle products. Truffle butter, honey, oil, cheese, and flour are all simple to use and will be great fun to play around with. To me they are the best kind of convenience foods--they add alot of flavor and luxury without a lot of cooking or prep time. I don't spend lots of time cooking--I think you can prepare great food without it--and this book seems to have that same philosopy. The recipes are simple and enticing. They often focus on humble foods--like potatoes, eggs, pasta, rice, lentils, and vinaigrettes--which give you a great way to flavor all your favorite foods and make any meal special with very little effort.

5 out of 5 stars Another great cookery book by Judith Sutton.......2002-12-20

For years, Chef/Writer Sutton has guided my choice of cookery books through her book reviews and articles. Now her latest work--I often turn to her previous piece on champagne and chocolate--is a joy to behold. Beautiful, well-conceived. And the recipes, etc. are also great. Good reading. Good eating. Great gift. The best cookery book of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Truffles ý My Ultimate Choice.......2002-12-06

Truffles Ultimate Luxury Everyday Pleasure Cookbook by Rosario Safina and Judit Sutton, with the marvelous photographs by Shimon and Tammar Rothstein - is much much more than an ordinary cookbook. The book treasures not only plenty of recipes (Over 115, I liked the smoked duck salad with pancetta, warm ricotta salata and black truffles, among other dishes too) and treasures not only The Rothstein's accompanying beautifull photos (didn't they just come out with Eric Riper's Cookbook A Return to Cooking?). The book also holds in its pages a brief history of truffles plus an important and an eyelightening information about The Truffles Family (White and Black Truffles and their relatives), How truffles grow and harvested, How to buy, store and serve truffles, and last but not least - introducing the truffle products: affordable luxuries. It calls for a celebration to all truffles lovers. It is also an opportunity to those, who are not aquainted with truffles, to taste it, to learn how to prepare outstanding tuffles-base dishes, and to start a new long friendship with that delicious food. Truffles are unique and The New Truffles Ultimate Luxury Everyday Pleasure Cookbook makes a valuable gift for my friends and myself.

As the author of more than 200 articles about animals for publications such as Woman's Day, Parade, Glamour, and the Los Angeles Times, Kristin von Kreisler has become a well-known advocate for animals in the United States. In Beauty in the Beasts, she presents her belief that animals are capable of virtuousness. To prove her point, von Kreisler supplies hundreds of true stories of animals' doing good, each divided according to the virtue demonstrated: compassion, loyalty, courage, fortitude, resourcefulness, cooperation, generosity, sensitivity.

Anyone who has ever shared space with a dog or cat will be familiar with the story of the dog who licks away his owner's tears and provides comfort. But what about the story of Vintage, the feral cat who'd bonded with a dog to such a degree that she provided milk for puppies when her own kittens had not survived birth? Dog lovers may get teary when reading of Maui, the Newfoundland who rescued two surfers in Corsica before drowning while trying to reach a third. Less common and less domesticated animals are no less noble. There is "a sensitive chicken named Sonya" who clucked and whirred while nuzzling a sad human friend, and Petunia, a pampered 400-pound pig who bravely chased an intruder away from her back door. While science may scoff at von Kreisler's insistence on the reality of emotions in these animals, most readers will simply giggle, cry, and ultimately come away with a deeper appreciation for animals of all sorts. --Jill Lightner

              Book Description

A 209-pound potbellied pig throws herself into traffic to help save her owner, who was suffering a heart attack. A dog steals a loaf of bread from the family pantry and brings it to a young girl confined in bed. A horse stands guard over an injured baby rabbit and refuses to leave until the rabbit is rescued.

These are just a few of the hundreds of true accounts collected in Beauty in the Beasts, a captivating narrative that combines provocative scientific findings with a compassionate understanding of the natural world to show that animals, like humans, can and do choose to do good.

Writes Philip Gonzales, author of The Dog Who Rescues Cats, "Finally von Kreisler is pointing out what's so easy to see, but hardly anyone does: Animals choose to act with incredible honesty, decency, and purpose. Anyone who loves animals will want to read this wonderful book."

1 out of 5 stars Too much defense; not enough stories.......2006-11-30

The author spends a GREAT deal of time defending animal altruism (against scientific explanation as to why there is no "beauty in the beasts") instead of focusing on the stories as the title alludes to. Perhaps her target audience was intended to be a bunch of numbheaded ego-centric humans...in which case her constant defense of animal behavior...to wear them down...is spot on. I believe animals have the capacity, beyond humans, to be altruistic and was looking forward to reading story after story about them...instead I forced myself through a sprinkling of stories over 85 pgs of the 217 pgs. I'm glad I paid only $8 and some change...actually, I'm not.

TRUE STORIES OF ANIMALS WHO CHOOSE TO DO GOOD
I READ THIS BOOK NEARLY IN ONE SITTING. I never turned on the TV at all. The Stories In This Book Are Filled WIth Emotions, Ours And The Animals. Who Ever Says Animals Have No Feelings Has None Themselves!
217 Pages Of Stories That Will BE With You A Very Long Time.
One story about a 209- pound potbellied pig who threw herself into traffic to get someone to stop for her human who was lying on the floor in her house having a heart attack will be with me always.
The woman fell and could not help herself. This pig ran out a dog door too small for her and tried to attract attention. Not having any luck she ran back through the dog door to keep tabs on her human. She cut herself up on the dog door going back and forth several times. Finally the pig went out into traffic and threw herself in front of traffic to get someone to stop. When they did she got up and ran for the house making sure the person was following her.
The woman was saved and the pig was treated for her own wounds. Both recovered.
A horse named Beauty who just had a foal and ran to be with her companions but there was a strong current in the river that caught her foal. She ran back to get her baby when her human dove in after the foal. He was swept away and the mare dove in the waters, pushed the man close to the bank so he could get out of the freezing water. She then dove back in and got her foal to safety on an island in the middle of the river.
These stories will make you feel your own emotions, cry, laugh, and they will make you appreciate the critter you have even more.
One in my own pack is a small Rat Terrier who in his mind, thinks he is a Great Dane. We were all out at the dog park when a large mix breed dog came running torwards me. My pup had no idea the dog was just being playful and got in front of me and tried with his 24 pounds to push me backwards while facing this huge beast snarling for all he was worth! He was in attack mode with no care for himself. I had to quickly dive on top my baby to prevent any misunderstandings. The big dog just stopped, looked at the tangle of dog and human and went back the way he had come.
I have no doubt my pup would have defended me with his life....
We animal lovers are deeply gifted.

              1 out of 5 stars racist!.......2006-02-12

As a person who has spent innumerable hours saving unwanted pit bulls from slaughter, I was appalled at the racist comments Kreisler made in this book. She writes, "If course, I'm well aware that all animals do not choose to do good. People have pointed out to me, for instance, pit bulls who act like Jeffrey Dahmer." Disgusting. This is comparable to saying, of people who do not choose to do good, "People have pointed out to me, for instance, blacks who act like criminals."

Later she describes the compassionate actions of what "looked like a purebred pit bull" but must have been "perhaps one-part pit bull and one-part boxer." Again image: a compassionate act done by "what looked like a black man but must have been one-part white man and one-part black."

Kreisler's fear and hatred is disturbing indeed. She presents as someone touting the good of animals but her racist castigation of the beleaguered pit bull breed makes her akin to a KKK member spouting human rights. It's time we all become sensitized to racism in all forms.

5 out of 5 stars Apocryphal & Anecdotal But Powerful.......2005-04-23

This book is little more than a collection of "brave animal stories" sent in to the author after the success of her first book, but in repetition there is some authority.

Von Kreisler admits in the introduction that 'animal courage' stories are not the stuff of scientific inquiry -- not yet anyway. Science is still more concerned with putting animals in cages, testing them with various horrors, and then dissecting them to look for physiological changes. The idea that non-humans could share anything with humankind besides 90% of our genes is frowned upon by a deeply-conservative scientific community, which is still struggling out of biblical tree-of-life and dominion-over-earth strictures.

So if von Kreisler occasionally seems breathlessly willing to ascribe every maternal instinct to conscious intention, she can be forgiven for overstatement to make a point. And after 200 pages of amazing-if-true examples, the evidence behind her argument develops a weight which is hard to deny.

3 out of 5 stars Nice stories, but not what it claims to be.......2004-02-12

I had high hopes for this book, but found it didn't live up to the book jacket. It claims to establish that animals choose to do good, and I expected some in depth stories about various animals. Instead, the author seems to include very very very short stories (some only one sentence long) about animals, largely gathered from correspondence she received in response to her first book, the Compassion of Animals. She spends time arguing that animals have feelings - first of all, I'm willing to bet most people who choose to read this book already agree with that, so she's preaching to the choir, and it gets patronizing and old fast. Secondly, as near as I can tell, she has no particular credentials or studies or background she is drawing from to make the statements she does. I wasn't looking for "proof," since I already agree with her outlook on animals, but all the same I was annoyed at her apparant belief that all that is necessary to "prove" something is to make an assertion and then point to a number of anecdotal stories to make her point. If you take the book for what it is, rather than what it purports to be, it's a nice, easy read - one filled with stories about animals which do good things. It's similar to sitting in a coffee shop listening to people talk about things they've seen or heard about animals, like "I heard of a dog once who saved someone from a fire by dragging them out of bed by an ankle!" In all seriousness, that's what most of the book contains, sentences or paragraphs of things the author has heard about animals or experienced. Every now and then one animals' story is covered in more depth, but not a lot of depth. She seems to be desperately trying to argue that animals have emotions and morals without doing it well - instead she should just tell the stories and say "Here are some nice animal stories about animals being kind to people and other animals; I think they demonstrate morality and experience emotion" and leave it at that, then tell the stories. Instead you have to endure what appear to be some very poor attempts to make this book into a serious work rather than a light read for animal lovers. All in all, still worthwhile, just go into it knowing what the book really is so you aren't disappointed. If you love animals, you'll probably still love all the stories and just skip the author's rants.

              5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2005-05-30

I agree with all the other reviews and can't really add much, except to say the photos are many in magnificent full colour, and he even has photos of incomplete pieces which is great for seeing how they are put together (I am specifically thinking of the easy chair). He does not stick to strict Queen Anne but covers the subtle variations such as the Gaines chair (one of my favourites) ... this book is a true gem and since receiving it I can hardly put it down. A great resource and would make a fantastic present for someone interested in woodwork. Queen Anne furniture would have to be near the pinnacle of woodworking but with this book it seems reachable.

              Truly excellent.

Wish that author would write some more on other periods (ie ALL other periods from early medieval to modern). I would not hesitate to collect them all.

In all my experience with fine woodworking I haven't had the pleasure to read a book that is as exquisitly written as the pieces within it. 5 out of 5 stars It's All Here.......2001-12-31

Recognizing that Queen Anne furniture is one of the timeless and most beautiful designs, I realized, on starting my first project, that I hadn't the foggiest idea of the history, the elements, or the construction techniques of Queen Anne furniture. This book has it all. The sections on history and the making of the cabriole legs in themselves make this book a "must have," both for the collector and for the cabinetmaker. To top it off, there are scaled plans for several projects, and some time-saving techiques for construction. If you get only one book on Queen Anne furniture, this is the one.

              5 out of 5 stars Incredible book!.......1999-10-26

Norman is obviously as incredibly talented an author as he is a cabinetmaker. I couldn't say enough about how great a job he did with the content of this book and drawings. I only wish he would write another one for each of the 18th century styles( Federal, Chipendale, etc) This is definately the bible for 18th century reproduction cabinetmakers. Please write another one Norman!

4 out of 5 stars Worth a Place on the Shelf.......2005-11-29

This book basically follows the same format as the previous one. There are enough photographs to sink a battleship, but very little cultural information for the plants.

The book is a boon for identifying that annoying plant that you have never been able to find a name for, but of course it does not cover all species of succulents, a book of that stature would be too heavy to lift.

In my own opinion what lets the book down slightly is that some of the photographs are of young plants that bear no resemblance to how they will look when they are mature. Having said all that, the book has very little competition. There are thousands of books on cacti, but very few on the other succulents. It is certainly worth a place in the collection of all those interested in these wonderful plants.

If you liked Maurizio Sajeva and Mariangela Costanzo's first book, Succulents, then you will really like their second edition titled Succulents II. The book's outline is basically the same with some new information provided. The photo's, like their first book are superior and serve as a great means of plant identification. The addition of having the book in hard cover form (the first is paperback), makes this book an excellent reference material without concern on wear and tear when carrying it around the garden. Amazon books has the best price on this book and I've shopped around before purchasing it. If you time it right, you can order it with a couple other things and take advantage of free shipping and handling. I think that's pretty good deal.

For this subject, this is a "must-have" reference book. It is very visual. The images are great and the authors have gone beyond the commonplace. Do I recommend it? I give it 5 "Forget-about-it's".

4 out of 5 stars An impressive catalog of succulent species........2001-03-06

Documents around 1,200 species of succulent plants in an A to Z format. Entries include a color photograph, species name, family, a brief description of appearance and habit, and details of specimen's origin. Introduction provides a brief overview of succulent families and representative genera. Appendices cover alternative names (scientific, not common) and additional reading materials, broken out by family.

Bear in mind when considering this book that it is a _survey_ compilation, not an identification guide. It sets out to catalog the astounding variety of succulents worldwide, and never touches on care or maintenance. Pictures are often of salient features, such as flowers or stem structures, rather than of the entire plant, and many are photographed in their native habitat (by which I mean, they are not always the flawless beauties that we are accustomed to seeing in plant books --although the settings are often as fascinating as the plants themselves!).

I very much enjoy thumbing through this book. Although I personally find it of very little practical value, I would recommend it to any plant enthusiast with an appreciation for diversity or photography.

4 out of 5 stars Another must have reference.......2000-07-16

The authors have begun where the first book left off. Very similar in size, the sequal has some info on CITES status, as well a general overview, of certain genus and species. For easier identification, several species have multiple pictures, ensuring that pertinent information is not lost from a habit shot. Some species are repeated from the intitial 1994 release, but many are new. Certainly an invaluable source for species determination, individually and in concert with the original.

                Book Description

Consulting this manual will make life infinitely easier for anyone at a computer who is striving to make type look good and read well on the Web.

In contrast to technical manuals, this book concentrates on the look of type, its appropriateness for given projects, and whether type should be displayed as pictures or as HTML text. Type possibilities are explored through applications for personal, informational, institutional, advertising, and hybrid sites. A gallery of three hundred sites for type design shows readers how to apply the same rules to their type designs for the Internet.

Totally cool reference tool that will help you showcase your company, your personal site and your club or group's essence on a website and accompanying collateral literature or off-line materials. Covers topics including how color impacts reading, and perception to 3D and filmic experiences, how to "Hollywoodize" your service or at least know what the studios do to get more eyeballs to their movie sites to how to create logotypes and layouts that help you search and find what you want on the web-- and of course your site too.

                5 out of 5 stars splendid.......2002-01-24

I found this lively book quite insightful and useful in my work. I'd recommend it to anyone interested in taking on the challenges of website typography. Looking forward to future publications!

                4 out of 5 stars Balanced, colourful........2001-08-09

I've really enjoyed this colourful book. I have brought it to meetings to show clients different 'styles' before producing the graphics of a home page. So I particular liked the 100 page 'show case' showing many good examples of well-balanced home page layouts. The 'sites best unseen' could have been left out.

                1 out of 5 stars Embarrassing.......2001-04-03

The only reason I give this book 1 star is because zero was not an option in the popdown menu.

Roger Pring certainly does practice the easy way out theory. Every site contains flaws that even novices can discover, that doesn't make you an expert. By pinpointing flaws in other sites, versus showing valid good design, the books leads beginners astray. Nitpicking another site is not how to design a good interesting web site. First rule of thumb for Mr. Pring would be to get the permission of site owners prior to publishing his material. THAT is the first good rule of any publishing course! He should go back and relearn it. Being the owner of one of the slandered sites, I can attest he doesn't practice the laws of ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

                2 out of 5 stars Where's Ralph?.......2001-11-17

The title of this book suggests that it is a story of a Black Police Chief, his rise in ranks, and his views on various political issues. Although the book does briefly outline Ralph's life, this seems to be the secondary focus of the book. As soon as you begin reading, it quickly becomes apparent that this book first and foremost serves as a platform for the author, Ralph's brother-in-law, to put his own political views in print. The author does this to such an extent that at times Ralph's story is overshadowed by verbose historical and political discussions that were quite loosely related. In addition, the reader is faced with the challenge of weeding through lists of people who knew Ralph at various points in his life. The introduction of these additional people would have been less tedious had the author linked those persons to Ralph in a more meaningful way, for example, re-telling a story that demonstrated their relationship.

The most refreshing portions of this book were the letters scattered throughout the book that Ralph had written to his wife. Ralph wrote these letters while serving in the military or while away for job training. The letters gave a true sense of Ralph's personality and his strong commitment to his family, friends and excellence.

Ralph Cothran appears to be a man who overcame tremendous economic challenges to eventually rise to the position of Police Chief. He seems to have been a man of great character and personal strength. It is unfortunate that this book didn't put more of a focus on the life of the man for whom it was named. I was disappointed that Ralph never had a chance to write his own story before he died. If you can weed through the lengthy historical discussions, you will find a sketch of an inspiring man that you will want to learn more about.

The biography of Ralph (Big Ralph) Cothran is the exciting and revealing story of a foot patrolman who rose to be Chief of Police in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Big Ralph reveals his true feelings on many social problems of our day.

For example the following questions are just samples of the questions Big Ralph seeks to answer: Who set the precedent for Black leadership? Did busing Black children render them quality education? Why did Thurgood Marshall conclude that declaring Black people inferior would persuade the Supreme court to vote to desegregate public schools in America? Has the Back intellectual community sold out the Black community? Are there any independent Black Studies Departments in any University in America? Who controls the NAACP, the Urban League and SCLC? How can the word of God be best understood? What is the relationship between independent thinking, academic freedoms and freedom of expression and those lost in a dilemma of dependency?

Did Integration, Civil Disobedience Cause Crime? Is there a relationship between civil disobedience and crime? Did civil disobedience cause a distrust for authority and society's basic institutions? This book seeks to answer many questions that have caused a dilemma for the American people. Big Ralph is a book that tells the story of a man who fought against the odds. Big Ralph was a man who gave his life for his city and is remembered for the peace and harmony he brought to his beloved city, Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Ralph Henry (Big Ralph) Cothran joined the Chattanooga Police Department in 1964. By 1989 Big Ralph was appointed Chief. Thus, he became the first Black Chief in the history of the Chattanooga Police Department. As an intellectual law enforcement officer Big Ralph developed various theories over the years. These theories related to law enforcement and the social problems of society. Crime and it's relationship to Civil Rights were some deep concerns for the Chief. He also took a serious look at welfare, the removal of prayer from the schools, busing, family values and the respect for authority. Thus, the book to logically deal with these questions seeks to historically review the Civil Rights movement. For example the historical development of Black leadership styles and Black organizations are brought up for review. The book Big Ralph: Reflections of a Black Police Chief seeks to fill a void in the literature. There is a need to evaluate all aspects of society. This includes the Black experience. Many questions and concerns relating to the Civil Rights Movement have not been evaluated. This book seeks to evaluate concerns like, what is integrationist philosophy? Also did the conclusions by the Thurgood Marshall legal team cause more Black inferiority?
