5 out of 5 stars A Good Archaeological Mystery.......2007-08-29

Lyn Hamilton's series of archaeological mysteries involving Lara McClintock and her friends is a good archaeological mystery. The author is very thorough with her research and her novels are intriguing. "The Orkney Scroll" is based in the Orkney islands off the coast of Scotland, a little-known area with a lot of history. The Vikings settled there and raided England and the other surrounding countries returning with their plunder. This story features the adventures of one of these Vikings; Bjarni the Wanderer.

Lara McClintock is horrified when one of her customers destroys a rare and valuable writing cabinet with an axe. When he is subsequently accused of murdering a fellow antique dealer with the same axe, she is convinced he is innocent and sets off to prove it by following the past history of the writing cabinet. She goes to Orkney and finds that everywhere she turns the legend of Bjarni the Wanderer shrouds the island in mystery.

As she delves deeper into the mystery of the writing cabinet, she is befriended by several of the islanders and becomes immersed in their lives and the history of the islands.

Lara and her friends are believable, amusing and lifelike to the point that they are almost predictable. Lara's travels are always to interesting and little-known areas. Lyn Hamilton draws the local area and its weather, flora and fauna into the story. I enjoy reading her books and enthusiastically recommend them to my friends.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best of Hamilton's who-dun-its.......2007-04-19

I have read all of Hamilton's mysteries and find this one the weakest. While the plot and the cultural background are interesting, the quality of the writing is mediocre. I often had to skip paragraphs because they were repetitive, full of bland descriptions (how many times does the reader want to hear that someone or something is "nice?"), and labored attempts at humor. Another flaw is too many coincidences, e.g., characters running into each other in improbable situations. The denouément is too abrupt. I have the impression that Hamilton wrote this book in haste and did not edit it properly. Hope that the next Lara McClintoch mystery will be up to the author's usual literary standards.

5 out of 5 stars The Orkney Scroll.......2007-03-17

Once again Lyn Hamilton takes us into an almost unknown, fascinating world. Her history "lessons" are painless (for us the readers) and full of excitement and danger (for her characters).

Ms. Hamilton's descriptions and characters are so lifelike that you feel as if you are experiencing the events in the places and with the people she writes about.

The motives are complex, the crimes are "real" and you will really never guess "who did it."

4 out of 5 stars Fake Antiques, but Genuine Characters.......2007-02-23

I must admit that I was predisposed to like this book. I love history and archaeology and was really looking forward to reading what was billed as an intelligent archaeological mystery. So I was a little surprised that there wasn't more of a focus on the archaeological theme. Don't get me wrong, the book was still good, it just wasn't quite as advertised. What the book is mostly about is the main character, Lara McClintoch (an antiques dealer), trying to figure out how she messed up on an authentication of a rare Mackintosh writing cabinet, which turns out to be a fake. The man who bought the cabinet chops it to pieces with an ax when he finds out it is a fake and the dealer who sold it to him is subsequently found murdered with the same ax. Needless to say, Lara feels a little guilty and confused because she really thought the desk was genuine.

There are several things I like about this book. First, Lara doesn't drop everything and run off to investigate. This is the real world, after all, and she has to look after her business. So she sits and stews about the problem for some time before doing anything about it. And when she does do something, she follows her few leads logically and then bumbles around when they run out. This is a very realistic approach that the reader can appreciate and relate to.

However, this book suffers from a severe case of coincidence that tosses this lovely organic buildup right out the window. When all of the possible suspects end up in a remote corner of the world at the same time, you expect them all to traipse into the castle for a midnight game of Murder on a dark and stormy night. But even with this serious lapse on the part of the author, the book is well worth your time.

Did I guess it? No. Will I read more? Absolutely.

4 out of 5 stars Treasure hunt and murders in enchanting Orkney!.......2007-01-12

The Orkney Scroll is the tenth installment in the series of archeological mysteries by Lyn Hamilton. The protagonist is Lara, an antique dealer who lives in Toronto. The murder of one of her wealthy clients seems to be tied to his purchase of a piece of furniture authenticated by Lara, that turned out to be a fake. Lara is convinced that the piece of furniture was authentic and attempts to discover the origins of both the fake and the real furniture. The trail leads to Edinburgh and then to Orkney.

Hamilton's descriptions of Orkney are vivid and realistic. This isolated island group has some amazing archeological sites and Hamilton does a nice job of integrating history, descriptions of archeological sites and an intruiging murder mystery. Her characters are interesting and lively. The prose is smooth and well plotted. An enjoyable armchair read!

4 out of 5 stars Better than I expected........2000-11-02

I was disappointed by the second book in this series, and so my expectations for this one were lower, and it exceeded them. It still doesn't do what I'd just once like to see in a book that is part of a trilogy: it doesn't stand on its own. The first book of this series mostly did, and the second book did not at all; this book came close, but I'm uncertain as to whether it could be read on its own. It is a fine completion to a fine story, and almost manages to be a top-notch story on its own; I'd rate the series as a whole at four stars, and recommend it highly. The characters are very realistic, and very enjoyable, and the Changeling world is one in which I would like to see more stories. I hope that Cassada is working on more.

5 out of 5 stars Great novel.......2000-05-12

Portion of back-of-book summary: "One of the changelings' own has betrayed them. Now he sails for Ireland, ancient home of the sidhe, accompanied by the Forsworn Prince, who has three of the faerie treasures known as the Immortal Eyes. The remaining oathmates must follow in search of the fourth and final Eyestone..."

Court of all Kings is conclusion to the great Immortal Eyes trilogy, and as I advise for any book series, be sure to read the first two novels (The Toybox and Shadows on the Hill) in order to get the full experience. Jackie Cassanda's storyline and characters are so absorbing that I had to make myself read slower so that I wouldn't rush through the novels. The ending of Court of all Kings was very surprising and a little sad, but overall it was a great read.

4 out of 5 stars Hawaii and Menehune.......2001-02-03

for Changeling: the Dreaming. The 2nd in the Immortal Eyes trilogy (preceded by The Toybox, followed by Court of All Kings), Shadows on the Hill covers the chimerical Hawaii setting, and includes the story material for the second part of the Immortal Eyes chronicle. it also introduces the Menehune, the islands' native fae.

the biggest problem with this book is that it spends too many pages detailing characters, pages that could have been better spent giving more detail to the various Menehune Callings (the four divisions of the Hawaiian fae) and their culture. the focus of the book is on the European Kith, and treats the native fae as a sidenote.

the setting material is good, and open-ended enough to set Chronicles in Hawaii entirely for many years, though a good bibliography would have help fill in the holes.

5 out of 5 stars Highly rated.......2006-12-12

I am normally a very logical, rational person. Fear of flying is defintely an irrational fear. I relaxed with this book, would bring it on flights with me. In fact the last flight I took was so relaxing that I left the book on the plane! If you happen to see it on an Air Canada plane, hope you can use it!

5 out of 5 stars This book brought me relief!.......2004-01-23

I had never had a fear of flying until about five years ago. A bunch of occurrances...forgetting my husband't suit for a wedding (and having to run back home, and back to the airport with three minutes to spare), 9/11, a few very turbulent flights, being tired and dehydrated (which made me ill) before getting on a plane all added up to a paralyzing fear. Not only did I have a more than subconscious fear of a plane going down, I had a fear of forgetting something important, and of getting sick. The getting sick (yes, throwing up...a lot) was a vicious cycle, because I'd be nervous about getting sick on a flight, and I'd get so nervous that the nerves made me sick! I was a mess and my life was controlled by a fear of flying. If I had a flight planned, I'd wake up terrified (and ill) in the middle of the night with uncontrollable anxiety weeks before the flight. Just the thought of getting on a plane sent me into an emotional and physical tailspin (pardon the pun). I too, knew that it was irrational, but the fear was so viceral and so out of my control, I finally sought help. A therapist suggested that the anxiety and subsequent vomitting was due to an overdose of adrenaline, and that is about all the help she could offer. I bought this book after reading the other reviews on line. I read it in a day, and over the next three flights I took after reading it, each flight became easier and easier. The last flight I took I genuinely enjoyed and I didn't need to take any anti-anxiety medicine. The book teaches you that the noises you hear a plane make are the noises it *should* be making. I always used to fear that the planes engines were failing upon ascent because you could hear them "loose power." I had no idea the pilots had that much control over the engines and that sometimes, for example, they just need to slow down the planes to comply with neighborhood noise ordinances! The book teaches you about weather conditions, and turbulance, and how planes and pilots have astounding abilities to handle them both. Sure, I still might sometimes (only sometimes) get a little jittery before a flight, but I feel that, like anything else, fear stems from the unknown, and when I educated myself on how planes work and how flying works, my fear went away. This book really, really made a huge difference in my life.

4 out of 5 stars Knuckles No Longer White.......2001-10-05

Having experienced an aborted take off, a collision whilst taxiing and a drop in altitude which left a stewardess in tears, I feel I'm well equipped to comment on this book.

I'm a 34 year old balanced/sensible male who for some bizarre reason conjures up terrible nightmares before each flight, dwells on them and then allows fear to breed fear - almost to the point of not travelling.

I've tried all sorts - pills, alcohol, more alcohol, but to no avail. Until buying this book I couldn't talk, eat or begin to relax on a plane - even whilst cruising. I used to spend the entire flight waiting for the engines to fail or imagining the pilots were dealing with some sort of emergency (whilst we sat in our seats, oblivious to our imminent demise).

I also knew my fear was irrational, but that made it worse - I felt totally isolated in my own private hell and as there was nothing to do on the plane (or nothing I could do) I let my imagination run riot.

Anyway, to get to the point, something had to be done. I bought this book and it gave me exactly what I wanted - reasons why things go 'bump in the flight', reassurance on the safety/maintainance aspects (I'm no longer waiting for the plane to drop out of the sky. I mean, do people worry about a car just stopping on the motorway - and that's only got one engine!)

I no longer watch the stewardesses and assume that if they're not smiling the planes about to crash. I'm amazed I thought that way now.

Unlike other phobics (and a couple of the reviewers that critisized this book) I've always known there isn't a magic cure
and I'm the one whose got to change the way I think about flying.

I've had to go from knowing it's irrational, but feeling petrified, to knowing it's irrational and actually believing it's the safest form of transport.

I'm not there yet, but I'm slowly winning. In fact on three of my last four flights I've been able to eat and talk !!

Many thanks Debbie - your book was money well spent.

2 out of 5 stars Not a Whole Lotta Help.......2001-04-03

Although not an uninteresting exploration of many of the aspects of flying, this book does not seem likely to truly alleviate many of the fears of the uncertain flier. It is one thing to understand the mechanics of flying, but quite another to get detailed descriptions of emergency procedures when something goes wrong. Those of us who suffer or have suffered bouts of unnecessary white-knuckled flying want to know how the plane stays in the air, why it is unlikely that something will go wrong and what all those noises and sensations are that may set us off. We also want to know what is going on in the cockpit during a normal flight, since most of us realize that once we've landed, we've once again experienced a normal flight...There are much better books than this one if you want to conquer any fear of flying....END

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Reasurances.......2000-10-31

The reviews about this book were so great that I decided to get it and I was very disappointed.Debbie Seaman explains all the mechanics of the plain which is helpfull but when it comes to explaining the take-off or emergency landings she becomes very vague. She talk about take-off as one of the crucial parts of flying. She says that even if there is something wrong found with the plain during take-off it still must reach the altitude before asking for emergency landing, now, that does not give me any assuarance of safety. Also, flight attendants are not suppose to contact the pilot during take of if they see something wrong with the plain. Another part of the book that kept me hanging with the questions in the air was the emergency landing. The author just says not to worry, the plane will land even without any power in the engins.Well that does not explain to me how it will land. Just because it supposed to glide in the air? To my knowledge the plane glides but to its death. This book created more fears for me than I had before.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Cookbook.......2007-10-11

This is the second copy of this book I have bought. I lost the first one in a move and I missed it so much, I bought it again. My mom and daughter both love it too. Recipes are standards but easy and great. I can always find something good to bake in this book. I think this is the Best of Betty Crocker.

5 out of 5 stars Betty Crockers Best of Baking.......2003-09-09

This book has recipes that are easy to use, no complicated instructions. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to bake.

2 out of 5 stars Not Exactly the Best.......2003-07-15

This is an admirable attempt at an all-purpose, easy to follow family cookbook. Sadly, this one is riddled with errors and not really suitable for much of anything.

It has the following chapters: All About Baking, Breads, Cookies, Main and Side Dishes, Desserts, Baking with Kids, and Holidays. The chapter on main dishes is rather out of place and inexplicable. The term "baking" usually implies desserts and sweets, not roast pork or polenta. The American usage of the word "baking" ordinarily does not include savory cooking besides bread.

The impetus behind this book is a versatile, wide-ranging collection of over 350 recipes that can be done by busy families, some members of which may not have a lot culinary skill or very much time. In that, it succeeds admirably. The recipes, for the most part, are simple and easy to do, and not time consuming nor difficult. While it has its share of frumpy, unappealing recipes like noodle casseroles, there is enough variety and interesting recipes to keep you occupied for a very long time. For example, the section on bread machines has so many interesting recipes that I want to convert several of them into ordinary bread recipes that can be done without the machine (Garlic-Basil Bread and Cherry-Almond Loaf, to name just two). It even has a special section of recipes designed just for children to do. The index of recipes at the beginning of each chapter is especially useful.

This book also has numerous errors and badly written recipes, which is rather surprising considering the source; one would ordinarily expect impeccable editing and proofreading. Several pictures are mislabeled (pp. 79, 58, 69, 233, 235). Some recipes contain typographical errors (pp. 43, 168, 183, 192, 194, 238, 402). Finally, a surprising 22 recipes have instructions that are either incomplete or not satisfactory for the average home cook. For example, several cake recipes instruct you to fill and frost a cake; this instruction is fine for experienced bakers who have done this before and already know how to do it, but not sufficient for the beginner.

I also object to the section "Baking with Kids". It does mark certain steps in recipes "adult help", an alert to children to get adult assistance, but this warning is not used often enough to make me feel safe about letting a child do these recipes, even under close and constant adult supervision. It warns both children and adults about the danger of sharp knives and electrical appliances, but these steps do not have any warnings on them in the recipes themselves. Also, it does not warn children or the adults about the most dangerous part of baking: the proper method of removing blazing hot pans from the oven, and appropriate steps and warnings.

Were it not for the omissions and errors, this would be a wonderful family cookbook. I do not recommend this book: the beginner will run into too many problems, and the experienced cook will find most of the recipes elementary and rather ordinary.

5 out of 5 stars 100 % delicious.......2002-10-15

Once again Betty Crocker didn't let me down. I bought this book last year and I use it all the time. It has great recipes, well explained and some of them have pictures also.
In this book you will find tutorials as well. I've done lots of recipes and all of them turned out great and had friends and a boyfriend asking for more. The book has seven chapters:

All about baking (cooking terms, ingredients glossary, how to's and mesuring ingredients)
Breads (yeast, quick and bread machine)

Cookies
Main and side dishes
Desserts
Baking with kids
Holidays

Highlights:
Cinnamon-Raisin bread
Potato Refrigerator dough
Pesto biscuits
Muffins (all of them!!)
Zucchini bread
Cheesy breadsticks (easy and quick)
Ultimate chocolate chip cookie
Snickerdoodles
Brownies
...I could go on forever
hope you enjoy it as much as I did

Having grown up cooking with Betty Crocker I could not resist this book. This book has a wonderful and vast selection of good recipes. One thing I love about Betty Crocker is they kitchen test all recipes throughly. So you can feel comfortable about the recipes as they are written. I love to experiement, but like you, I hate feeling left in the dark when it comes to new recipes and their preparation. I would definately urge you to pick up this recipe if you want excellent baking recipes. They range from breads, sweets, cookies, cakes, and more. You will soon be cooking up all sorts of tasty treats for your loved ones.

5 out of 5 stars Essential for anyone who lives with a dog........2005-11-17

This is one of the best dog-training books I've read. I've had my Border Collie for 2 1/2 years and I've read several books, online articles, and even spoke with two different dog behaviorists and still managed to learn several things from Ms. Hodgson's book.

Scold the cookies, not the dog - what a great idea. Your dog gets the idea that the cookies are a bad thing & he should just leave them alone lest he be associated with them. He doesn't want you to think HE is bad, too!

      Love it.

Thank you, Ms. Hodgson - I'm happy to recommend your book to everyone I know who needs some advice on living with their canine companions.

5 out of 5 stars THE Best Dog Training Book!.......2005-01-15

I bought this book years ago, back in 1995, in it's first edition. Back then, I had a Siberian Husky who was more than difficult to train. I read the book and followed Sarah's advice on how to train my hard-headed and over-active pupil. It worked! Not only did it work, but it worked very well! The techniques in this book only took about 15-30 minutes of my time each day.

In the end, I was able to effectively train my dog, especially house train, in no time! I borrowed out the book and I never saw it again! I was overjoyed to see Sarah has released a second edition. I am getting a new puppy next month, and this is my book. I even found the first edition and bought that one as well! Thanks Sarah.

5 out of 5 stars WOW WOW WOW WOW.......2004-12-11

WOW WOW WOW WOW. This Is an incredible book, extremly useful, and funny. It really explains the dog's point of view, and how silly people can look sometimes.-don't take that personbally. If you have a dog or you are a dog trainer this book is a must!

5 out of 5 stars Every dog should come with this book........2004-02-25

Years ago when I worked in the grooming department of a pet store, we sold cases of the first edition of this book to customers who would ask us why their dogs "misbehaved." I thought that book was the best book ever written for dog owners. The second edition is much better.

The author speaks simply and with the compassion and knowledge that comes from her years of experience with dogs and their people. This book enables people to communicate effectively with the dogs in the household, so there is mutual understanding, and "training" becomes second nature.

It is useful, informative, easily referenced, and very readable. Even if you think you know dogs, you will learn from this book, and enjoy the reading. It is not overwhelming for beginners, either.

If you have a dog, buy this book, and then be prepared to have to buy 4 more copies because you keep "lending" it to friends and family.

5 out of 5 stars Great book for training your dog.......2000-08-06

This book seems to be an excellent book for training your dog -- big or small. The author takes you from trying to understand your dog, to simple things you should need to train your dog, the first basic commands, moving on to harder things. At the end the author also outlines a variety of items to discipline your dog if your dog has problems of barking, chewing etc.

Not only is the book detailed, but set up in a way that you can easily read. Lists are very helpful in this book. The book also has interesting antecdotes about the author's experience with dogs which are separated out so that people who don't want to read them don't have to read them.

The content is good to help because it doesn't limit your options to one way of correcting your dog, but gives other ideas for those of us who are only a little creative. The book even talks about what games are good to play and has given me a few ideas for games for me and my dog.

My only problem with the book is the plug for a specially designed leash that the author sells. It does sound like a good leash for a dog that is kept inside most of the time. My dog is mostly outside and so the training with the special leash doesn't look that practical to me.

I think the best part of the book is the constant encouragement to the dog owners. The author tells us that training a dog depends on our attitude and does everything possible to keep our attitude to be helpful for training our dogs. One of the better dog-training books I have found.

As a collector I always hoped that someone would write an illustrated and accurate book on cast iron automotive toys. This book, more than fulfills my expectations. A must for anyone who collects. A must for anyone who played with these toys as a child. This is how books on collectibles should be written. It is not only a history of the subject but an encyclopedic account of the toys, their catalogs, and their accessories.Well done Schiffer and the Outwaters!

This book has great pictures and covers any type of flower you can dream up in it's 700 or so pages. The book is broken up into sections (i.e. Shrubs, tulips, etc.). A great value here too, it costs $60 in any other book store. The book also tells you what seasons each type of flower grows in.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect garden lover's reference book.......2007-01-13

This is a killer book. You can look up characteristics of a specific plant or research what to plant for a particular area. I use this book constantly, and also just sit down to look through it for fun. Everything has a picture, which I think really sets this book apart. It's big and heavy, but actually makes a great "coffee table book."

I love this book because it is so comprehensive and very useful for planning a new garden. Plants are grouped by season and color. Very helpful for landscaping. Shapes sizes etc are all very accessible.

        5 out of 5 stars 8000 plant descriptions! 4000 photos! A bargain at $50........1996-08-07

In one volume, the AHS Encyclopedia manages to cover 8000 plant varieties, 4000 of them with color photos. This is by far the best way of getting a comprehensive directory of garden plants at a reasonable price. For each plant, it gives basic information such as size, color, season of bloom, cold tolerance, etc. and often considerably more information about cultural conditions, propagation, and the like.

It is not perfect. For instance, its information on shade, water, and pH requirements is sketchy and sometimes conflicts with other sources I've consulted. But it is very good.

In all, this is a far better deal than getting multiple volumes of the Taylor's Guides, although for those who want more information the RHS Dictionary ($800) is more complete and those who want more photos of each plant the Roger Phillips and Martyn Rix series (Random House) is richer.

Perhaps someday soon the RHS Dictionary and the AHS Encyclopedia (which is based on the RHS Encyclopedia) will be available in CD-ROM. Until then, this paper volume has far broader coverage than any CD-ROM collection I've seen so far.

This book is great!!! Downloading the necessary files has never been so easy. The instructions to go the site to download the files is in the book. This guy under me is telling a lie. You don't need the instructor files. That's for instructors ONLY. You download the STUDENT files on the site. These are the files you need. That is all. This book is very clear. I learned how to create my own brochures, .pdf manuals, reports, etc., just by using this book. I will be learning Flash MX using the Illustrated Series. Don't give this book a one just because you and your professor don't know how to access the internet. I suggest you and your instructor take an Intro course in computer science first before using this book.

Reviewer: John R Iler Jr from Bethesda, MD, USA
This book needs a CD. I purchased the book to learn PageMaker, but was referred to a website to download the required files. Some of the files were downloadable, but the instructor files were not accessable -- and these files are necessary for completing the assignments.
Unfortunately, this book is used by many instructors. My instructor has been promising us the files for weeks on disk, but so far hasn't delivered.

If you want to learn PageMaker, buy Classroom in a Book by Adobe and save yourself a lot of heartache (It's got a CD with everything you need). Besides, Mr. Proot's style of instruction is less than clear, and while this download the files yourself approach may save the author some $$$ in not having to include a CD, it's a very weird way of doing business. The book is a ripoff. Big time.

              Book Description

Arthur documents the role that Africa's best and brightest play in the new migration of population from less developed countries to the United States. He highlights how Africans negotiate and forge relationships among themselves and with the members of the host society. Multiple aspects of the African immigrants' social world, family patterns, labor force participation, and formation of cultural identities are also examined. He lays out the long term aspirations of the immigrants within the context of the geo-political, economic, and social conditions in Africa. Ultimately, Arthur explains why people leave Africa, what they encounter, their interactions with the host society, and their attitudes about American social institutions. He also provides information about the social changes and policies that African countries need to adopt to stem the tide, or even reverse, the African brain drain. A detailed analysis for scholars, students, and other researchers involved with African and immigration studies and contemporary American society.
