I bought the first book along with the second book in tandem since I like books that just dont end. I have to guess I purchased these in about 1999 or so and bought both The Shadows of Aggar and Fires of Aggar. I am somewhat embarrased to say that it wasnt until last night September 15th 2004 that I decided to look up the author Chris Anne Wolfe to see what she was doing. This was of course after finally reading the dedication to the second book. I used the internet to 'google' the author and found 2 more books by her that I will likely purchase. I was greatly saddened to hear that she lost her battle with cancer.

I have seen some reviews out there on the internet that bash her style and writing, but I am one to say that these books have been great re-reads over the years, perhaps I am simplistic in the type of escapism I seek when reading, but I will continue to treasure them and mourn the fact that there will be no more sequels.

I identified with characters, understood the emotions of others and was not lost in the techno babble I have found curiously present in some of the more recent writers of this type of fiction. Inventing in the mind is a wonderful thing, being able to convey the concept is a gift. Chris Anne Wolfe does that well. My most recent read was a huge disappointment which is why perhaps I decided rather than trying out something new, I would reread something I knew appealed to me. I wish she had been granted the time to publish more than the 4 books I have found to read.

A sequel worthy of the original.......2004-03-08

Fires of Aggar is a worthy sequel to Shadows of Aggar. Often the sequel is a poor immitation of the original. Not this time. Wolfe has leapt centuries past many wars and much political upheaval to a place in time where the Marshal Gwyn n'Athena is free to travel to the distant domain of Kirla where the "blue sighted" Dracoon Llinolae is calling for assistance. What a shame the author will never fill in the gaps or take us winging once again across the centuries as they unfold on Aggar.

Llinolae is gifted with the blue sight but also possesses immense strength of character. She is struggling in a losing battle to protect her people from the encroaching Clansmen. Gwen and her Amazon companions, Brit the irrascible healer and Sparrow the intrepid acrobat, join with Llinolae both to save and to support her. This book is filled with intrigue, plot twists and wonderful characters. Gwyn's bond mates, the sandwolves, add an interesting dimension to the stories. For there are many stories interwoven masterfully.

You will enjoy the developing romance between Gwyn and Llinolae. Wolfe has chosen to let her characters develop into an intimate relationship with full knowledge of how the other feels. The annoying denseness exhibited regularly by lesbian characters in romantic situations continues for less than 3 chapters.

Wolfe never wrote clear, straight forward dialog if half sentences and raised eyebrows could be used. Grit your teeth and keep reading. You won't understand how the other character figured out what was said, but you will eventually understand what you need to know.

I was dismayed by the bad editing. The author misused several words and the editors didn't catch them. For instance Wolfe uses the word feign instead of feint. She uses feign correctly elsewhere. There are others. If you are a crabby grammarian like me, steel yourself to read past the stumbles. The story is worth it.

Ignore the cover; Enjoy the book!.......2002-05-08

Originally published in 1994, Fires of Aggar is a re-release of the second "Aggar" planet sci fi/fantasy by Chris Anne Wolfe. Occurring some 500 years after the events of Shadows of Aggar, Wolfe took this opportunity to explore the impact of the relationship between the Amazon Diana N'Athena and her "shadow" and life partner, the blue-eyed, Aggar woman, Elana, two characters from Shadows. In the intervening years, Aggar's ruling Council and the women of "dey Sorormin " (a planet populated by lesbians, known as the sisterhood) forged an alliance that led a colony of "dey Sorormin" women to settle on Aggar in the Valley Bay.

The war that was postponed in Shadows eventually consumed the Terran Empire. In the last five centuries, the descendants of those Terrans stranded on Aggar continue to clutch at their former, and now decaying, technology. They struggle with Aggar's natural habitat and against the native population.

Fires opens with a request for Gwen'l N'Athena, Royal Marshal to the council, to go to the aide of the Dracoon, the heir apparent of the city state of Khirla located to the South. Gwen is a "Niachero" or "daughter of the stars." This is the name given to those "dey Sorormin" that carry the appearance of the women of the N'Athena House or "Amazons." The Dracoon, Llinolae is a very gifted Blue Sight, a skill she has been carefully hiding. Fires is an espionage thriller with government intrigues and spies between various factions. Gwen is assisted by Ty and Ril, a pair of sentient sandwolves, and two shadow bound Amazons, Sparrowhawk and Brit.

Wolfe creates a refreshingly non-homophobic society on Aggar that values the strengths of "dey Sorormin" and respects their integrity. This is illustrated by the farmer who Gwen assists on her trip south, as well as the acceptance by the general population of same sex romantic relationships.

Finally, Fires of Aggar is a love story. Gwen and Llinolae, faced with a political knot, must balance their respective duties with their personal desire and the possibility of a future together. Fires draws the reader into their struggles to root for their success on personal and professional levels. Thankfully, the publishers have re-released this enchanting fantasy. Regretfully, they've changed the cover from the original illustration. The new photographed image is not an improvement. Ignore the cover; enjoy the book.

If you liked Shadows of Aggar you'll enjoy this too. If you haven't read Shadows then get it first! Both are imaginative enjoyable lesbian sci-fantasy with well thought through characters and romance with plenty of suspense.

I happened to come across this book in a bookstore in 1998. I bought it, knowing that I would probably be having brain surgery one day. When the surgery was scheduled for Feb 99, I sent for the audio tape & began using it twice a day for 2½ months prior to the surgery. I believe in being an active participant, so I began to get myself in the best possible shape physically, mentally, emotionally, & spiritually.

The surgery is called Deep-Brain Stimulation surgery, which implants a device in my body, similar to a pacemaker, to control the tremors I have from essential tremor. You are awake throughout most of the surgery so the surgeon can determine if s/he is placing the electrodes in the correct location of the thalamus. ET patients do not tremor when asleep; therefore, the need to be awake.

Peggy, her book, & her CD are fabulous. I have since given it to everyone I know having surgery, from simple foot operations to major brain, neck, or back surgeries. Each person has benefited tremendously, as did I. I then began giving it to everyone I know dealing with cancer, whether surgery, chemo, radiation, or whatever.

Realizing what a powerful mind-body tool this is, I have used it for a variety of things such as walking down the aisle for my daughter's wedding so I wouldn't be sobbing with joy (I'm too emotional), preparing for public speaking events, ...

I thank God everyday for leading me to Peggy's book in the bookstore. And I'm thankful to be able to pass it on to everyone that needs it.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in April and had surgery to remove the prostate in late June 2007, when I was 61. I was not particularly worried about the cancer spreading, because tests indicated that it probably was contained in the prostate. I was worried, however, about the "two I's" -- impotence and incontinence. My surgeon warned me that it could be two years before I knew whether my sexual function would fully return, and that the incontinence could take three months or so to clear up after the operation.

I bought both Huddleston's CD and the companion book, and started listening to the CD two weeks before surgery. I listened twice a day, sometimes three times. I have had training in mindfulness and stress reduction before, so the techniques were not new to me. I found that the CD proceeds through the relaxation exercises a bit more quickly than I would have wanted, but, on the other hand, you get it done in less than 25 minutes and you can get on with your day.

Within three weeks after surgery I was back to 100 percent of sexual performance. In other words, it works just like it used to. This is really remarkable, if you read the literature on prostate surgery and impotence. Of course, it could be all due to my excellent surgeon, Dr. Jim Hu of Brigham and Womens in Boston, who used the Da Vinci robotic laparoscopic treatement, and spent extra time trying to preserve the nerves. However, there's little or no evidence that this type of surgery reduces side effects more than traditional surgery. And I'm sure some of the credit goes to my wonderful wife. I doubt my mating apparatus would work as well if I were single and trying to impress women I didn't know. However, let's give credit where credit is due. I bought this CD to increase my chances of a good recovery, and I hit the jackpot. I believe the incontinence problems are less than average too, but I don't have any real way to measure that.

I would recommend the CD to anyone (and you've got to buy the paperback too, just to fully understand what she asks of you in the CD). I used it after surgery to deal with discomfort, and I continue to use it to relax and deal with everyday stress. At the very least, it will reduce your anxiety before surgery and help you deal with pain afterwards.

It's an excellent tool for helping you to relax. Despite the fact that I'm a Spanish speaker (though I know English) it was very helpful for me to help me sleep at night. I think you don't need to know English very well because as the time goes on you will undertand what she is saying.

Very good and very easy.......2007-04-24

This is a pretty great book. You can just open it up, find a recipe using ingredients that you already have in your kitchen, and put together a delicious meal. The sections are broken down nicely between breakfast foods, appetizers, beef, chicken, fish, etc. that give a wide range of diffent tastes and textures to fit your mood. Additionally, the low number of ingredients means that you won't be stuck in the kitchen preparing a meal for hours; most of the dishes can made ready for the frying pan or oven in about 15 minutes. Still, the best aspect of the book, for those of us embracing a more low-carb lifestyle, is that each recipe lists how many serving the recipe makes along with how many calories and carbs each serving contains. It's very, very useful in managing what you're taking into your body. I recommend this cookbook.

Easy and delicious.......2006-03-03

I found many new recipes and ideas using this book. I love that you only need a few ingredients. I really enjoyed the Almond Shortbread Cookies. They looked pretty and tasted very good. I can always detect the Splenda in most recipes, but I don't mind that. At least, I can have a cookie now and then. Have you every read Dana Carpenders books. I have them all and love everyone. If you like this book, I think you would also enjoy her books.

After recently purchasing a cocker spaniel puppy, I was looking for a book that would give an insight to temperament, behavior, and possible health concerns of cockers. This book touched very briefly on these subjects and focused more on details for owning a show-dog. Since our cocker is purely a house pet this information did not interest me. There was very little in terms of the insight of understanding cocker spaniels and the best way of training your cocker. There are lots of cute pictures of all the different colors cockers come in, but other than that I didn't get much information that I was seeking from this book.

Creative Playthings: unique toys live-on in Linda Baker book.......1999-01-30

I was pleasantly surprised to see several of my toy concepts presented in Ms. Baker's book, "Modern Toys". As Vice President of Product Concept & Development for Creative Playthings of CBS Toys, in the late 70's, when the broadcast giant also delivered quality educational and learning toys and games, my group birthed what I now frequently grace the tables of flea-markets and yard-sales. One series, "Block Family", is represented in the "Who-Sit?" category, to which I quickly responded with patent details for Linda's "next book", which I sincerely hope she may produce. I grew up with many of the classics in her array, and applaude her for preserving, at least in print, memories for millions of youngsters, of a more simpler period in childhood-Americana.

A good basic toy reference.......1998-12-29

This book has a selection of toy pictures from all the big toy manufactuers, with an extensive section on Fisher Price, both for little people and their earlier push toys. A great book to go to for reference when I am checking on a set's piece count or number. The color pictures are wonderful, but coverage can be spotty....that is, not all toy manufacturers and their lines are as fully represented as I would like them to be. Nevertheless, this is one of my main toy reference books. Feel free to email me if you would like to know how well a certain manufacturer is represented, and I will be happy to look it up for you.

Good reference for novice handyman as myself.......2007-05-15

I found this book to provide the basic information really well with lots of pictures and tips. I think this book provides the common skilled home owner with enough information to handle easy to medium high projects by themselves. There might be some better books out there however I decided to buy and use this one and I am glad I did.

Comparison of 3 home wiring books.......2003-01-07

...I found three books that seemed to have the information I needed: Wiring 1-2-3 by the people at Home Depot, The Complete Guide to Home Wiring by the Black and Decker people, and Wiring a House by Rex Cauldwell. Each is an excellent book with much to offer, but I definitely found that each had a slant that made it specialized in some way.

Of the three books, only the Cauldwell book was written in a person-to-person format. The author is a third generation electrician with years of experience, and as he says quite charmingly, "I have written this book from lifelong experience and knowledge--some of which has been passed down through each generation. However, there is no one within my family to pass the gauntlet to--no fourth generation to pick up the trade. Therefore, by reading this book you will become heir to my knowledge and experience. You, in effect, will become the fourth generation (p. 1)." His style is very much master of the craft to learning apprentice, explaining all facets of his field from how electricity is produced, how it is measured, what types of wires carry it to and into your home, and what tools one needs to do electrical work. He not only provides the information, he tells the reader the "whys" of what is, which I find helpful because it permits one to problem solve and trouble shoot more effectively. Particularly useful are those things that he tells the reader to avoid and what can happen when they aren't! The drawings are very helpful, particularly as they are clearer than photographs can be. Sometimes less is more in this regard. The schematic of the main floor of a house (pp. 22-23) which detailed how wiring is arranged for each room was quite helpful for my project, since it described what I should (and did) find in the walls when locating my power source and routing new wiring. I also found that the information on materials to select was helpful. I was able to go to the store and pick out just what I needed without any trouble at all.

While the Cauldwell book is a good one to read from cover to cover because of it's clear and thorough discussion of electrical wiring and its many helpful hints (which I did), it really did not help with my specific plans. It does cover some types of project, but I found that The Black and Decker book was more useful for my specific wiring goals. It's definitely a "how to do it" book with information on trouble shooting current wiring for potential problems (pp. 122-143), on code requirements (pp. 145-146), on how to calculate electrical loads and when to upgrade. It also includes simple repairs for the home owner, everything from checking which fuse controls which part of the house, to replacing plugs and repairing fluorescent lights. It also provides some advanced projects, like rewiring a kitchen or installing outdoor wiring. Of particular interest to my husband, the computer guru in our household, was the information on the home network wiring systems.

For my own project, I found the circuit maps for 26 common wiring layouts of greatest help. With the aid of this feature and the Cauldwell book, I was able to draw on paper the likely arrangement of the present wiring in my spare bedroom, and plan in the pathway to and from the projected new outlets. The diagrams on pages 155-167 also gave me a clearer idea of which wires connected to which specific sites on the receptacles, and what the pathway of the current would be. I was thrilled when I turned on the wall switch in the room, and the lighted crown molding actually came on, first try!

Wiring 1-2-3 is another group-effort type book like the Black and Decker. It'd made a splendid gift for the new home owner or prospective buyer. It provides the most extensive information on inspecting the home for electrical problems and providing measures for repairing them. The table of contents highlights almost every conceivable project, and each project has a list of materials, a skill scale that projects the level of difficulty to expect, and the amount of time that would be required by the experienced, the handy and the novice. It also makes some suggestions regarding the selection of a professional electrician for difficult projects, and does not urge the novice to go beyond their comfort level.

Although I didn't use the Home Depot book for actual planning and wiring, I found it was especially helpful with the messy stuff, things like drilling holes through the attic to route wires, the nitty-gritty of fishing for wires, and repairing the damage to walls where holes had to be made to route wires. In general these books are useful all round books.

I'd give all three books a 5, each for its own area of usefulness. If you're a person who likes to have a multi-perspective approach to your projects, then I'd recommend all three. Certainly the Home Depot book would be a very nice house warming gift.

Glossy, pictoral, easy to follow........2002-01-16

I can't complain about the price since I bought mine
used for around five bucks. However, I think Home Depot
could add a little more meat to the book and justify the
costs.

That's my only criticism. The book is eminently readable,
extremely useful and clear, and illustrates the common
household electrical challenges well. In short, it will give
a reader the necessary competence to accomplish the mission.

THE Wiring Book for Home Improvement.......2001-12-29

We recently had a 16x12 workshop built in our back yard. I decided to do all of the electrical work myself, something I had never done before. With Wiring 1-2-3 at my side, I was able to complete all of the electrical work in a professional manner and--thanks to the book--I knew exactly what I was doing. I later added an additional branch circuit to our service panel (something I never would have considered before reading the book) and plan on doing all of the electrical work when we refinish our basement starting next month.

As an unexpected side effect to reading Wiring 1-2-3, I actually found some things that the original electricians did incorrectly when our house was built (most notably the fact that our GFCI outlets are wired incorrectly). I can now fix these problems and avoid trouble in the future thanks to the book.

Useless unless you're a novice........2001-12-28

This book is way too basic to be useful to anyone other than a novice. Even then, it will not improve your knowledge enough to perform the most usual home wiring projects. For a much more complete and thorough overview of basic home wiring, I suggest the Black & Decker "Complete Guide to Home Wiring" which will be useful for novice and amateur Do-It-Yourselfers.

If you really want to know more about home wiring and the National Electrical Code, I suggest "House Wiring with the NEC" by Mullin. If want to know everything then get "Electircal Wiring-Residential" by the same author. It covers what electrician apprentices learn about residential wiring and isn't that hard to understand.
