Book Description
Travis McGee is too busy with his houseboat to pay attention to the little old man with the missing postage stamps. Except these are no ordinary stamps. They are rare stamps. Four hundred thousand dollars worth of rare. And if McGee doesn't recognize their value, perhaps Mary Alice McDermit does, a six-foot knockout who knows all the ways to a boat bum's heart. Only it's not McGee's heart that's in danger. Because a syndicate killer has put a contract on McGee. A killer who knows something about stamps . . . and even more about McGee.

A rare MacDonald miss.......2007-10-04
I think this was the 20th book I've read in the Travis McGee series, but it's the first one I didn't like that much. There were the usual profound nuggets of McGee wisdom and philosophy ("Today, my friends, we each have one day less, every one of us. And joy is the only thing that slows the clock.") But MacDonald belabors the intricacies of the plot and declaws the tension when McGee starts asking far too many "What if...?" questions.
The Scarlett Ruse.......2007-09-19
Well, as usual with John D.'s Travis books, there is a twisting and winding story that creates enough intrigue to entice a reader. Yes, it's now a bit outdated, but who cares? Those of us that love and relate to Travis and Meyer can be quite forgiving, can't we? Even if we're trying desperately to find our own local and friendly marinas. The developers are just about to make us anchor out in the big pond.
Good, regular Travis-think.......2007-01-03
The Busted Flush is the place to be. It's John D. MacDonald's gift to mankind.
Complex.......2005-06-01
This is a Travis McGee mystery. McGee is lured off his boat by a friend whose stamp dealer friend is in trouble. The dealer constructs stamp collections as investments for rich clients. One day, the dealer noticed that the stamps in one of his client's collections had been switched with low grade specimens, significantly downgrading the value of the collection. He's terrified that the client will ask to cash in the collection, leaving him with an overwhelming financial liability. He asks McGee to help him figure out how the stamps were switched, and who did it. Complicating the matter is the dealer's secretary, who McGee finds himself mysteriously attracted to.
This story is rich with detail, and it can be hard at times to keep it all straight. The plot goes over the edge of plausibility in places, and the ending has an odd twist that I still can't figure out. Nevertheless, the story remains engaging throughout, and can provide a bit of entertainment or distraction for a little while.
A Travis Classic.......2004-07-23
While I still find "Flash of Green" to be my favorite MacDonald book, there's something so appealing about the Travis McGee series that keeps me coming back to them. And "The Scarlet Ruse" has such an engaging opening sequence of events, and such an array of fascinating characters, that you cannot put this mystery down.
And while I know that MacDonald enjoyed popularity in his time, it seems that his popularity is running out of gas. I hope I am wrong because he is horribly overlooked.

Book Description
In this trilogy's first novel, The Rhymer and the Ravens: The Book of Fate, the Nordic-Celtic bard Tomas's encounter with Moira, the Elf Queen, catalyzed his recognition of his true nature and his initiation into the Ars Magica--the magic arts. In The Elves' Prophecy, Tomas the Rhymer learns to use his magecraft. Accompanied by his new raven-allies, he's going his own way and finding his own teachers now, yet there's something that Moira hasn't told him...

Bohemian Ink Review.......2003-02-18
Forrest weaves a beautiful tapestry of characters in this continuation of Tomas the Rhymer's story. It is the year 878 AD, and Moira, Queen of the Welsh Elves, is pregnant with twins Tomas fathered. In Elfland, some speculate that Moira carries the children of a much disputed prophecy. Division over the prophecy spurs the leaders of the Nine Realms into a violent struggle for power. The Elf Lords Rhys and Finvara lead the resistance that would eliminate the unborn children and the children's claim to power in Elfland. Also-unknown to all others-the demi-god Loki watches and waits preparing plans of his own.
In addition to the wonderful cast of returning characters, 'The Elves Prophecy' presents an enigmatic Lord of the Air named Nissyen, and two deliciously hateful antagonists: Daniel the Priest and Isolde the dusky Queen of the Sidhe. Despite a slow start cluttered by description, Forrest builds 'The Elves Prophecy' to a raging climax that is sure to both surprise and please.
Pleasantly Surprised.......2001-09-07
After truly enjoying "The Rhymer and the Ravens" - I was a bit worried that the second book in the series was going to be a let down (they so often are). To my sincere pleasure - The Book of Being was excellent. The characters in these books get under your skin unlike any (regardless of genre) that I have read in quite a long time. I've just started on the "The Bridge" and I'm excited about the possibilities left for Tomas, Moira, and the Twins. These are genuinely good books that are as strong as any contemporary fantasy I've read (period) - and stronger (IMHO) due to excellent characters, enough genuine history and mythology, astrology, and homebrew to describe the authors personal love of the subjects. I hate that you have to special order these - they should be on the shelf at all book stores.
This book snuck into my dreams -- and my nightmares!.......1998-07-23
I loved the first book in this series so much -- "The Rhymer and the Ravens." I was almost scared to read the second one, thinking it couldn't possibly live up to the level of the first one. But it did! It's sort of slower in the middle, but that's ok because it just kept me turning pages anyway -- there's something going on here that's almost like an initiation into being a druid or a Norse shaman. The hero encounters real teachers and elemental Spirts and there's all this stuff about how to deal with them that seems almost like a manual of sorcery, except that it's also a great story, and kind of romantic and sexy, but also just as full of a real three-dimensional sense of the world a thousand years ago. I'm just itching to get to the third book in the trilogy. This one ends in a pretty satisfying way -- it's not like it leaves you hanging or anything. But there's still a sense that there's "more to come" and I can't wait. Jodie Forrest is doing so! mething sort of like what Tolkien did, except it's more adult and darker. It's actually entered my dreams, and once I had a nightmare about the character Isolde, who's the evil Fairy queen...it sinks into your bones that way.
Jodie has outdone herself again!!.......1997-01-21
Continuing with the travels of Thomas, the Rhymer, we travel to another place...another time...a land of magic and incredible possibilities! This book, along with her first in this series, "The Rhymer and The Ravens", has given me a new outlook on life and assisted me in finding a 'path' that is mine. The story gives one hope and belief in magic, faeiries, and "more" than we see in this physical plane of existance. If you just want to "get away" for a bit, its good for that too! I am telling everyone about these books and anxiously awaiting the third!!! Thank you, Jodie!! Never, Never stop writing!!! Becky Jackson (theia@worldnet.att.net

Great book, great information!.......2007-10-10
I am still reading this and I am loving it. The information is solid and makes sense. It's inspiring. I feel like this could really be helpful in my effort to take back my health.
A USER-FRIENDLY GUIDE TO MANAGING HYPERTENSION NATURALLY - WITH MEDS ONLY AS NEEDED.......2006-01-31
IN A NUTSHELL: E-Z to grasp balanced approach
Written by a Cardiologist, this book is among the first to suggest that treating hypertension is not just about filling prescriptions and taking your medicine on time.
WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT: Using Prescribed Meds As A Last rather than a 1st Resort!
Most of all, "Lower Your Blood Pressure in Eight Weeks" is about using conventional prescription medicines as a last rather than a first resort.
So how do the Sinatras suggest doing this?
----- * DIETARY CHANGES, including the "Pan-Asian modified Mediterranean diet" plus certain amino acids [L-Arginine, L-Taurine, L-Carnitine], Co-enzyme Q10, flax, soy, fish oils, Hawthorn and much more. Comprehensive "Meal Plans" are included in the second half of the book.
BOTTOM LINE: - SAFE - EFFECTIVE - EASY TO MANAGE PROGRAM
Balanced approach to hypertension treatment which includes alternative medicine blended with conventional allopathic medicine. Best of all, this book is written by a Cardiologist [M.D.] and by a very qualified nurse [M.S.N., C.N.S., A.P.R.N.], who are a married couple.
now, this is my kind of doctor!.......2005-12-05
I never thought I'd find a cardiologist who agrees with me that prescription drugs are a last resort, but here he is. Believe it or not, he even understands enough about real life to tell you to get your chi in shape! If you want to know which supplements live up to their hype (and some of them do), this is the book you need.
I'm already eating lots of rice and soy..........2004-12-02
Ever wonder what Asparagus, Avacados and Anger have to do with hypertension? Although some folks suggest you should not eat Avocados if you are on a low fat diet, perhaps you will reconsider after you read Steven and Jan Sinatra's book. And although asparagus are available seasonally, so you may want to eat as many of the fresh ones as you can and avoid the canned variety unless you wash the salt off. Frozen asparagus are okay but they lack the crunch of course. The Sinatras say your best bet is to freeze your own.
Anger is the killer. Try yoga, deep breathing exercises, aromatherapy, and pets to release anger. Bodywork including massage will lower your blood pressure if you get angry. Working out with weights or walking can be wonderful stress relievers.
Quercetin in tea and/or red wine may be better for you than taking medications with COX-2 inhibitors. The Sinatras include meal plans and recipes. I'm already eating lots of soy and rice, but the Sinatras offer many other good ideas. My philosopy is `Take what you need and leave the rest" and there is plenty I can take from this book.
This program will work!.......2003-02-18
Dr. Sinatra has used all the latest and smartest scientific info to devise a unique and effective program for anyone who wants to lower high blood pressure. I have read two of Dr. Sinatra's other books--on coenzyme Q10, and on the role of emotions in heart disease--and found them unfailingly informative, sensible, practical and insightful. I highly recommend this book.

Easy Chinese Cooking.......2005-09-28
I was looking for this book for a long time until I thought of using Amazon online. This book was so helpful to me when I was a young newlywed. In moving around a lot, I lost my original copy. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in learning how to cook Chinese food. It is written in simple and easy to follow directions.
AWESOME couples cooking.......2004-02-08
My husband and I bought this book on a whim 10 years ago and still cook every week from it. We have purchased copies for everyone in our family so that they would stop taking our copy. VERY simple TASTY recipes. Great to cook together with a spouse, date or guests. Great for entertaining.
The Only Chinese Cookbook I use.......2003-01-05
I took Jennie's cooking classes over 20 years ago when I lived in California, and bought this book directly from Jenny. I am a cookbook collector, and this is the ONLY Chinese cookbook I ever use. All of the recipies work and the instructions are complete and easy to follow. My old copy is falling apart and I was delighted to see this book carried by Amazon, and it sounds like it has been updated and recipies added.
A must have if you love Chinese cooking!.......2002-05-09
I have owned this book for over 20 years. I have used it so much, mine is falling apart, so I am replacing it! If you want easy to follow recipe's and clear techniques, this is the book to own. When it's my turn to do the Holiday cooking, everyone requests Chinese over Turkey. It's easy to adapt your own style of cooking with the recipes in this book. This is a must have for your cookbook library.
Perfection.......2000-06-26
I've been collecting cookbooks (and using them!) for 40 years. I've probably used over 1000 cookbooks--always looking for excellent recipes to add to my repetoire.
Chopsticks, Cleaver, and Wok is the best cookbook I've ever used. Most cookbooks have only one or two, or sometimes a few, recipes that I end up liking. Nine out of ten of Ms. Low's recipes are superior--she really knows what she's doing! This is, to me, the greatest cookbook there is.

THE definitive book on animal training!.......2006-12-13
Pete Davey has written, in my mind, the best animal training book there is. Davey, a professional animal trainer, shows how the common person can train ANY animal using the same techniques he uses when training dolphins. Even if all you want is to have your dog sit when asked you'll gain the knowledge how to effectively execute the behavior. You'll learn what terms like: bridge, positive reinforcement, stimulus, operant conditioning and many others mean. Bravo, Mr. Davey!
Author teaches how to stop being held hostage by your pet.......2004-07-22
Whales with Fur
As a dog lover, I am proud of what my beagle hound Shadow can do. He can do regular dog things like roll over, say hello, and stay. It was not easy teaching him these skills, and I have failed in a number of other efforts.
For instance, if I throw a tennis ball, he will pursue it, but he will not yield it up, preferring instead to slurp it, chew it, and toss it in the air for himself. As a hound, he is a prisoner of his nose. So efforts to convince him to refrain from smelling our guests, with emphasis on certain sensitive areas of their bodies, have been equally unsuccessful. As a result, when visitors come, he must be leashed. Although he sits agreeably by me during visits, it is a little embarrassing that I can not let him loose. He sometimes barks when gullible people are eating, because he enjoys people food. He will steal it if we turn our backs on him.
Had I been able to read Whales with Fur prior to teaching Shadow some manners, I would have had an easier time of it. This book is written by an expert on animals, but it is written in an easy-to-understand manner. For instance, on the matter of fetching, I immediately saw the error of my ways.
Like many other owners, I always threw the ball and when my dog ran towards me, I would offer him a bit of doggie biscuit. Of course, as soon as Shadow saw the biscuit, he dropped the ball, ran to gobble the treat, almost choking himself with enthusiasm, and then ran back to pick up the ball and take off for parts unknown.
Author Pete Davey sheds a great deal of light on this matter by explaining that instead of teaching the dog to run after the ball, an owner must first teach the dog to release the ball in a backward training approach. Davey uses terms like "bridge" for the stimulus that communicates to the dog what you want him to do so that he will get the "reinforcer" or reward. Davey explains that you actually begin the training with the goal. He writes, "Think of training the behavior backwards. The last thing in the sequence of events you want Laddie to do is hand you the Frisbee. Right? So put the Frisbee in Laddie's mouth. Then, at the same time your hand is holding the Frisbee and Laddie holds the Frisbee in his mouth, bridge (whistle) and reinforce (hot dog piece)."(pg. 49)
That advice makes so much sense to me now, but until I read this book, it never occurred to me. Whales with Fur is full of such advice. It is more than a book, it's a complete system for teaching an animal good behavior. The foreword is by Jack Hanna, Director Emeritus of the Columbus Zoo, and also host of TV's "Animal Adventures." Author Pete Davey, Director of Training for Marineland of Florida, has been involved in advanced animal training and care for 16 years. He's worked with whales, dolphins, sea lions, seals, tigers, birds, and many other species.
If you want your horse to jump higher, or your dog to quit falling apart as soon as he sees the vet, this book's for you. Davey covers cats that scratch, dogs that dig, and teaching animals how to perceive that "good" means the behavior is what you want them to do.
Davey's writing style is peppered with humor, and that's a nice touch that makes solid information more user-friendly. Consider this passage about taking your pooch to the vet: "Most people will claim Skipper KNOWS when he is going to the vet. In reality it is far more likely that he knows the car ride is going to end in something negative. It is very unlikely that Skipper's brain comes up with, "Wow, that lady is getting her purse, putting the children in the car, and now is coming towards me...my goodness, we must be embarking to the veterinary office, where I might be stuck upon the rump with a sharp needle. I know...I'll run away!"(pg. 127)
The photographs and illustrations in the book enhance the reader's experience. There's one photo of a large marine animal with a human foot protruding from the animal's mouth. Apparently, the trainer hadn't read Whales with Fur.
In our home, we'll be trying Davey's techniques on our beagle hound. Maybe one day, we?ll be able to leave a turkey sandwich unguarded. I'll definitely be buying some copies for my family and friends, with several unruly pets in mind. Hopefully, loved ones will learn to get the dog or cat to do what the humans want instead of being held hostage by their pets.

Learn how to prune more than 80 popular plants to get the best display of flowers, foliage, colorful stems, and fruits.Pruning is probably the area of gardening that causes the most anxiety to the average gardener. Many books add to that anxiety with illustrations that show completely different plants from those in the reader's own garden, or directions that use complex terms without explaining them. In contrast, this plant-by-plant guide demonstrates the correct pruning technique for 80 of the most widely planted trees and shrubs, with photographs and instructions that are so clear they will inspire confidence in even the novice gardener. Read The Pruner's Bible to discover:o Basic rights and wrongs about making cuts-with information clearly photographed in step-by-step sequenceo What tools to buy and how to look after them-and how to choose the right tool for each jobo What to do with the prunings-the pros and cons of shredding, burning, bagging, and compostingo How to select young trees and shrubs that will grow into well-shaped specimens-with little or no pruning requiredCovering shrubs, climbers, roses, and ornamental and fruit trees, with separate sections on hedges, topiary, and special techniques, this outstanding guide will remain a bible of pruning for years to come.

A good place to start.......2006-07-26
I bought this book because I am new to gardening, and the house we bought has a number of shrubs that appear to need some tender loving care. I chose this book because of its clear illustrations and instructions on what time of year to prune different things. I like it, and I like the confidence it's given me to prune in an appropriate manner. But I wish it had a larger basic guidelines section. The book is very specific about types of plants, but of course can't list them all, so I find myself stymied when I have a plant that is not in the book -- they're so specific, so my thinking goes that it must matter how I do this, but there are no easy-to-follow general guidelines for "if your plant is not here" situations. I am happy to have this book in my gardening book collection, but next spring I will look for an additional book that has more information about the plants specifically in my yard.
How-To Pictures for Each Type of Plant/Tree.......2006-07-20
This guide to pruning in your home garden is good for beginner and advanced gardener alike. It starts with the basics of why, when, with what tools and how to prune. But the reason I bought it (along with copies for my friends) was that it has for almost every type of plant or tree, a two-page color spread that has a picture of a beautifully pruned specimen (to inspire you toward your goal) and an illustrated diagram of the plant with markings as to where to prune it, along with of course an explanatory but simple narative. I looked at many of the available books on this subject and this is the one to buy. Happy prunning!

Don't Typeset Without It.......2003-07-02
Lots of details on how to tweak LaTeX.
This book is where I first look if I have a Latex problem - extremely useful.
Outstanding book of hints and tips.......2003-03-23
I bought this book in 1996 when I entered graduate school and have utilised it as a reference while writing all my research papers as well as my dissertation. I also have "The LaTeX Companion" by Goossens et al., but this book is much more useful to me. At about 170 pages, it crams everything you need into a very short amount of space, including info on fonts, tables, math, formatting, etc. The chapter on large documents was invaluable to me when I was preparing my dissertation. Furthermore, the last chapter has a number of cool macros that have come in pretty handy.
Note that this is not a beginner's book on LaTeX, nor does it exhaustively show all the extremely cool bells and whistles that LaTeX can do; this book serves as a concise reference and list of hints and tips for using the key markups. When I write a paper, I like to concentrate on the actual content I'm writing about rather than how to format the text. However, when I do need to format text just right, I turn to this book, and it has never let me down.

From Country to City: Comments on Migration to Ashtabula Co.......1999-11-27
I have just completed reading Carl Feather's Mountain People in a Flat Land. This book tells the stories of migrants from West Virginia, who left for the jobs in Ashtabula County, Ohio. As one who was born and raised in Ashtabula County during 1948-1971, it brought back memories. Many of the people were people I worked with at the Electromet, or were with friends with my parents. I could hear the noise and the danger,as my father worked there for 25 years. It is a wonderful addition to anyone looking for works on local history. While it does not have the scope of Studs Terkel, one realixes not all migration was to the big cities, but to the many small towns in Ohio who had similiar factories. While I enjoyed reading the book, I was left with a sadness, since many of the shops no longer exist nor do many of the people including my parents.

Book Description
The Human Genome Diversity Project tells us that between 15,000 and 30,000 years ago people from Mongolia crossed Beringia to what we now call the Americas. U.S. Immigration and Migration chronicles and interprets the phenomenal waves of immigration to the United States from the earliest times through the period from 1820 to 1930, when the United States was the destination of some 60% of the world's immigrants -- up to the present day, when restrictive policies have temporarily stanched the flow of immigrants.
The Biographies volumes bring the panorama of immigration and migration to a personal level by profiling both prominent and less well-known people of the immigrant experience.
