I find it difficult to cull out the quality books in the mystery/thriller genre, so I rely on other people's recommendations and amazon reviews to facilitate the process - for every one I enjoy, I probably toss three. So, I will recommend this title because it is very well written with considerable dialogue and just enough description to create the picture. The plot is not exactly gripping and concludes without any real bang, but the characters are engagingly drawn and give the book interesting interactions to ponder. And if you love New England/Vermont, the setting will enhance your pleasure. I plan to pass the book along to a friend, my ultimate evaluation.

A domestic call gone bad deals Vermont's Bureau of Investigation agent Joe Gunther a second chance from the past. The gun involved in the domestic turns out to be one used in the unsolved fatal pistol whipping of a shopkeeper 30 years earlier. Gunther's young wife had been dying of cancer at the time and he's always felt he dropped the ball.
This new evidence allows him to reopen the case and Gunther's painstaking, canny sleuthing is a pleasure to follow as he pursues each lead into the past and around New England. Not that this is any quiet cozy. Not once witnesses begin turning up dead faster than Gunther can track them down. On the personal side, his longtime love, Gail, is running for state senator and Gunther dislikes everything about the political arena and its effect on her. Well-plotted and character driven, this thoughtful series keeps getting better.

More introspective then previous books, you finally get to know Joe and understand the character in more depth. It's also a very good procedural as Joe is able to investigate an old crime using new technologies. Mayor is an excellent writer whose books are always a pleasure to read. Highly recommended.

Archer Mayor's series starring Joe Gunther of the Vermont police just keeps getting better. This entry is indeed his best; multi-layered, suspenseful and realistic.
Gunther is investigating a cold case, well over thirty years old, and is thrown back into the emotional crisis that was in his life at that time. His wife, Ellen, was dying, slowly and painfully of cancer at the same time he was investigating the brutal murder of a shopkeeper. A young man under suspicion at the time disappears and it seems that he is the murderer. The suspect is never found and suddenly the case is open again and Gunther must travel the path again, reliving the anguish of his young wife's death. In the present he must deal with his relationship with Gail, his lover, who is entering politics and in the midst of an active campaign. Her campaign means that he is not able to turn to her for support with his many conflicting emotions.
This is a well-written, suspenseful story made strong by the depth of the characterizations. A great series.

Mr. mayor has done it again. He is a master in this genre. He has earned his due to be included in the upper tier of writers such as : Parker,both MacDonalds, Cornwell, and Chandler and Doyle .
Mr. Mayor has captured Vermont and its people. Not only that but has noticed the different Vermonters in different areas of Vermont and that their thinking and speech are unique to their part of the state.
I am a private investigator and deal in his world and can vouch for its truthfulness.There are many writers who just dont know and make fools of themselves with what they write.

I loved this book. It has so much stuff about Gypsies and their powers I recommend it to anyone. The world of darkness just isn't complete without these characters and I think anybody playing a Gangrel or Ravnos is nuts if they don't first make their character a Gypsy with these rules and then Embrace their character (I think it's a 2 point merit on the Ravnos web site, WELL worth it). The Evil Eye is particularly nasty, especially used in a group of Gypsies.
A wonderful concept..........1997-12-08
I had high hopes for this book and although it truly didn't live up to my expectations I'm still glad that I got it before it vanished from the shelves. If you like the World of Darkness genre this is a classic giving you information on a group of mortals (though partially awakened ones) that often seem to know more than the supernaturals (Kindred, Garou, Mages, etc.) put together. It's nice to see the humans get the upper hand occasionally. It also give some info about the Ravnos vampires, and Silent Strider werewolves so if you're into these factions it warrants a look. The major drawback is the absence of an experience chart and a few inconsistancies in the rules (but, hey, it's White Wolf we're talking about here). Gypsies are a great way to add mystery and mysticism to a game without having to add a good deal of power. Let's hope White Wolf puts out a second edition...or at least reprints this one.

Before writing my review, I read the others. Some wrote that this book was the same old, same old, nothing new. The contents may not be altogether new,however, the way Dr. Nay presents the material is helpful.
Over the past five years, I went to numerous counselors asking for help with my angry outbursts and my continued disgust for some peoples behavior. These counselors only offered me handouts.
One counselor provoked me to see how expressed my anger. I caught on to what she was doing. I asked her if she was actually trying to Piss me Off. She said yes. I asked her why. "I wanted to see how you would react." Regardless of her credentials, I immediately stood up and left.
In this book, Dr. Nay states that anger has five basic faces: Passive-aggressive, Sarcasm, Cold-Anger, Hostility, and Aggression. After taking his brief questionnaire in this book, I found that I fit into all five categories at one time or another.
Growing up in The Bronx, New York, I learned to wear many masks in order to survive. Dr. Nay does not offer excuses to continue in my "wild and crazy" behavior. He offers me solution.
If someone truly wants answers to the anger problem, try this book. It is no magic pill. In fact, I leave my copy on my kitchen table and read a few pages a day. I use a yellow highlighter and numerous pens.
After completing my college degree in 2002 at age forty-seven, I had a lot of knowledge, but I did not have a solution for my emotional problems, especially my anger.
In defense of my education, I am using the tools of studying in my approach to this book. Without controlling or taking charge of my anger, my degree will do me little good if I cannot get along with people.
Conflict is everywhere. This book helps with this human problem of communication. Dr. Nay suggests to read the book all the way through; then go back and read it again and this second time do the exercises.
Ever since the invention Carnation's Instant Breakfast in the 60's, it seems many of us expect quick and easy solutions to our problems. In fact, a change in ones personality can take a lot of time, patience, a lot of time away from other activities and a lot of hard work.
My observation has been that although we can easily find ideas and information on the Internet, I do not believe that we can expect lasting change without reading, studying, contemplation, journaling or writing, and practicing new habits of thinking and acting. Improving ourselves is serious business; in fact, anything worthwhile requires a commitment.
If you do not feel like you want to buy this book at first, go borrow one from the library. But, please do not read your borrowed copy with a pen in hand. Before you get through the first two chapters, you will be want to purchase your own copy.
Dr. Nay's methods work - I have proof.......2007-03-13
Dr. Nay's book outlines what he teaches his patients in real life. How do I know? My husband has seen Dr. Nay as a patient, and the way he now deals with his anger has improved immensely. My husband is not the same man he was before seeing Dr. Nay. He's calmer, deals with problems and stress in a more rational manner, knows his limits and is now able to stop himself before his anger is out of control. He is a better husband and a better father because of Dr. Nay's help. One comment my husband has made is that "Dr. Nay GETS me." Dr. Nay truly understands anger and stress, and knows how to help you deal with those problems in a healthier way. I've seen it work first hand. My husband read this book, and it reinforced everything Dr. Nay has taught him in practice. Dr. Nay's methods do work, and the changes in my husband are proof. Do they work over night? No, of course not. These methods take time and practice, and the changes happen slowly, but they do happen if you work at it. I highly recommend this book to anyone dealing with anger issues. Dr. Nay is amazing, and has made an incredibly positive impact on my family.

I read all the reviews for this book and carefully thought about before purchasing and I must say that this book is a must for anyone who has anger issues. Obviously everyones opinion is different as well as mine is from yours but after finding myself bullying my family for "no" reason I was recommended this book by a friend. After reading it my family has since tried to "push" my buttons and so far has not succeeded in getting me to succomb to the pressure. I would recommend this book and also feel that the other reviews that have been submitted did an injustice for this book but thats where freedom of speech comes in I guess. Good read, Great book, Wonderful info to apply to your everyday life.
stupid book.......2006-01-11
This book made me totally angry because it's written by a stupid doctor who obviously does not understand what it's like to be human. There is no way to tell someone how to control anger. Breathing and saying to yourself "I better not get mad now" ain't gonna help a darn bit to someone who is totally upset since they were 4. I say, lower your caffeine intake and eat more apples. That helped me a LOT.

I have been greatly helped by this book. I've read others and had lackluster results mainly because they focus on identifying and classifying issues but fall short when it comes to weponizing the reader with techniques that achieve results.
This text (like some others) begins by drawing the reader in with situational examples mapped to a breakdown of the underpinning anger types. There are self assessments to help guide the reader into better insights. This is further (and nicely) developed in Chapter 4 to give powerful techniques that allowed me address my own particular issues. By the time I completed Chapters 6 and 7 I was actively engaging effective methods that had real positives impacts on my life. The methods used are sensible, easy to apply and effective.
I am a slow reader by comparison to most; however, I believe that I was served well by this. I would suggest reading this book at a pace that allows time to reflect and apply the techniques. It seems logical to me that the process of behavioral change is much slower than the process of understanding my issues, so taking the material in chunks allowed me time to manage these methods in an effective way.
"Taking Charge of Anger" is allowing me to reframe the world in away that I can effectively cope; likewise, I am better equipped to be a more comfortable person to be around.

Not a couple's cookbook!.......2005-03-30
I purchased this cook book after watching an episode of Sara's Secrets on the Food Network, featuring John and Caprial Pence. They emphasized it is a cookbook geared toward couples preparing a meal together. Upon reading it, I discovered that while the book does designate "Cook 1" and "Cook 2", this plan for preparing the meal together only works when you are preparing the entire meal exactly the way they have it planned in the book. More times than not, I found myself only liking the side items offered and not the entree(in which case, "Cook 1" essentially prepares the entire meal). Even if I had followed the format of the book, using "Cook 1" and "Cook 2", many times "Cook 2" tasks were things like pouring the wine,spraying the pan, or heating the oven(very elementary tasks). This book might be great for making your child "Cook 2" , but certainly not your significant other. My suggestion: Only buy this book if you are a huge John and Caprial Fan or you want to cook with your children. If you want a cook book you can both use as 2 adults cooking together in the kitchen, have "Cook 2" "pour the wine" and join him/her in looking for some other couple cook book online together. This is not the one!
Duo or Solo Cooking Matches.......2004-09-17
This duo matched up not only in life but in business and now in offering home cooking menu help. Here is great set of twenty appetizers, twenty desserts and fifty entree with a side dish or more all with diving it up between two chefs or going it alone. There are also other tips given with each as to timing and technique advice.
The variety and creativity here is outstanding and the ingreds are not rare to too difficult to obtain nor is the techniques involved for the average to intermediate home chef. Even for the novice there are many that could school the start of great culinary adventure and success.
Mouth watering now as I encourage all to try the likes of: Grilled Radichhio Stuffed with Goat Cheese (two of my favorite tastes paired magnificently); Ginger and Lemon-Scented Chicken Broth with Grilled Prawns; Pumpkin-Leek Tart; Sturgeon with a Horseradish Crust and Watercress Aioli; Pork Short Ribs Braised in Curry with Apples and Chiles; Sweet and Spicy Curry Grilled Tuna with Gingered Vegetable-Rice Noodle Slaw; Pear Tart with Chocolate Cookie Crust; Dessert Bruschetta with Chocolate Ganache, Strawberries and Hazelnuts; Oven Braised Peaches with Raspberry Sorbet.
Good photos and aids throughout. This one begs to be cooked with and works famously.
Lovely book, with "fancy" recipes that are also do-able.......2003-12-02
As the Amazon description accurately says, the majority of this book is a set of 50 entrees with side dishes. Each of them is appealing, with straightforward instructions (though a few annoying spots where you need to turn the page to see what the next step is). The recipes are "homestyle" without being ordinary, such as osso buco braised with mint and tomatoes (mint? in osso bucco? yeah, that could work!) accompanied by green beans with balsamic vinegar. Quite a few recipes are vegetarian, though not enough that I'd be comfortable giving the book to a vegetarian.
Each dinner -- which serves 4 to 6 -- has steps for what one partner can do (sear and braise the veal shanks) while the other one works on another part of the recipe (prep the vegetables for the braising liquid). While this might be helpful to less experienced couples (say, newlyweds, or a couple that's new to the two-cooks-in-the-kitchen dance), I find it more cute than useful.
My only beef with the cookbook is that it has a tendency to use ingredients that cost a bundle, at least if you're outside the Pacific Northwest. Several recipes use chantarelles and other wild mushrooms, for example, which I love but can't afford often. As a result, these recipes may be used more for "special occasions" than for ordinary suppers.
But they'll be used. There's no doubt of that. Ordinarily, when I get a new cookbook I find a half dozen things I'm anxious to try immediately; this time, I have at least twice that many that I'm ready to try.

Written in the 70's, but superb..........2006-07-24
This author was recommended to me by a breeder who competes with his dogs in hunting trials. The breeder is a firm believer in gentle methods and a trusting relationship. However, before I ordered the book,I read reviews of Mr. Wolters other books on Amazon and was prepared for the worst old fashioned, fear based, compulsion methods. I was wonderfully surprised!
This is one of the finest books on choosing and working with very young puppies I have ever read (and I have read MANY). The author's experience and love of dogs is evident throughout, as well as his very clear admonishment of EVER being too harsh, or pushing any pup past his comfort level in exercises. The goal of the exercises with very young dogs is to build trust and confidence in the dog he will become.
The book IS a little dated, very little is said about spay/neuter and crate training, and if there are any New Yorkers still tying their puppies to parking meters outside a store, they must not be very bright. But I thought the references to "Women's Lib" were cute. Its now VERY un-PC to say that to get the dog you want, you are best off with a young, good pup instead of an adult rescue, but its true. "Spanking" is also VERY un-pc. While the author refers to it, he also repeatedly states that NO harsh discipline of any sort is appropriate for young pups. Considering it was written THIRTY years ago, I think its brilliant. He was actually saying back then that people confuse dog breeds "train-ability" and "intelligence"!
Mr. Wolter's experience is obviously tilted toward more "eager to please" breeds (most training books are) but because the book deals with very young puppies who haven't really developed into the more aloof specimins they may become, the advice is still excellent. Your loving tone may be enough for a middle of the road retriever pup, but keeping focus for more independent types may require a treat or two and this can easily be worked into the exercises.
The author assumes that it is being read by a dog lover who will make loving decisions. The format is such that the book MUST BE READ, not treated like a recipe book where you can just open to chapter SIT STAY. But its a great read and his style is easy and clear.
The heartbreaking true story of a sweet pup that was subtly pushed too hard should be required reading for anyone working with a puppy.
And just to be clear, the "Protection" part of the title means bark like hell and be VERY scary on command, or when strangers approach and nothing more. The author feels very few people can handle pets that willingly attack and bite human beings. Its a good call and very expected from a dog lover who works with the public.

I am a Shirley Temple Collector. I use this book all of the time to identifiy valuable dolls and outfits. I have learned so much from this book. A must have for anyone who collects dolls.

Judith Izen has hit another homerun with this excellent book for collectors of Ideal dolls. There are literally hundreds of wonderful color photos throughout the book. It is a pleasure just to leaf through the high quality, glossy pages. Even if you are not a collector, it would still be interesting to have the book as a conversation piece. Anyone who ever had a doll when they were young would love to look through to see if their favorite dolly is here. The book is also very well written with plenty of information about individual dolls and the different types of dolls. The 5 stars are well deserved.

I have several of Izen's books and I'm never disappointed with them. I especially like the section on the PlayPal family group; I found a couple of variations that I don't remember seeing before. There are a few I'd like to have seen more pictures and info on, but I guess something has to be saved for the next book.

The Collector's Guide to Ideal Dolls ID & Values 2nd ED by Judith Izen is another great book by this author. I have been looking for information on a Miss Revlon doll for years and I opened the box and right on the cover is the information I have been looking for. I am thrilled! The majority of the pages in this 350-page book are loaded with color photos and information on the Ideal dolls manufactured from 1907 up through the 1980s. Most dolls are pictured in their original outfits and some photos are packages of the original outfits. Also included are photos of ads for specific dolls. The book starts with a short history of the Ideal Toy Co., while the back of the book gives more information on issue dates, characteristics, and current prices.
This book is a must have for those doll collectors that want to restore a doll to original condition.

I truly recommend this book, not merely for finding out your Ideal doll's monetary value, but more as a walk down memory lane. Being 56 years old, I remember growing up with many of Ideal's dolls. I especially enjoyed the brief mention of the Snuggles' doll and rocking horse(which many books on dolls leave out). So, if you are tired of reading dribble..., then snuggle up with this pictorial walk down memory lane.

Great Book for the Tammy Fan.......2003-03-28
I used to own this book when it was first printed but unfortunately I lost it in a flood a year after i bought it. anyways this is an awesome book fro the Tammy collector and an even better book for beginners to get to know Tammy and her family. With so many books out there about Barbie and her family many people forget there were other popular and collectible dolls from the sixties or as I like to call it the "Golden Age" of Fashion Dolls. My only problem with this book is that they should have shown the Dad/Ted fashions out of the package and they should really update the book because the pricing is a little outdated(even for Tammy which is still relatively cheaper than Barbie). Other than that great book for anyone interested in the world of Tammy

Cindy and Susan have done a FABULOUS job of cataloging Ideal's Tammy from 1961 to 1965! Full-color photos of all the the Tammy ephermera are most welcome (and so needed) for collectors who may not be able to easily identify Tammy items after 35+ years.
As a Tammy collector, this guide has helped me refamiliarize myself with the Tammy line once more - and 'tweeners' like myself truly enjoy the comprehensive and very clear manner these items are reintroduced!
Drawback: Suggested prices simply 'beg' to be updated, as most of the online trading world and antique collectors recognize that the suggested secondary market prices for Tammy items are not completely 'in sync' with what's currently being offered.
This book will have you falling in love all over again with Tammy ... !

If you love beautiful gardens in California, but haven't a clue how to go about creating one, this is your book. Landscaping made simple is how I'd describe this book. One of the best features in the book is that you can see the full height/growth potential of different plants and trees. Also, there is a detailed guide on what grows where using a number system to trace each section. Thus, you won't fall too hard for any plant, flower or tree that hasn't a chance of thriving in your particular environment. On the other hand, you can plant with confidence those garden items that will succeed in your home. As surrounding yourself with nature can soothe the soul, this book serves as a handy tool in eventually finding a garden sanctuary. Love, Mom: A Mother's Journey From Loss to Hope.
a good introduction for California gardening.......2007-06-27
I was looking for a general, beginners introduction to gardening in S. California. I think this book is good for showing highlights of what to grow and how to garden in California. I bought it for my daughter, who is new to gardening and short on time and money. It guides one to good choices, particularly in choosing trees and shrubs for the garden. My one slight disappointment: it was very brief on the subject of vegetable gardening- what to grow in each season, and how to set up the garden, soil amendments, watering, etc.

What a great book--it gives you the very best trees, the best vining plants, etc. I was having a hard time deciding what to plant until I bought this book. This was especially the case with trees. When you know you have room for two or three trees, but there are so many to choose from, how can you pick? This book is so helpful! They also suggest other plants that go well with the top ten in each category.

I'm not a California native so this book was a blessing when I moved to the Coast with my very own front and back yard to fill up. This book is easy to follow on when, where, why and how for plants and planting in California. Also it's great for beginners to advance gardeners as it helps you plan a garden and then gives you ideas on embellishments. This book is a must have!

A very good book.......1999-06-17
I read the book and loved it, I am a regular Word User who is not happy with word... sure I can figure out right from the first session what to to with it, but when I get around to what I really wanna do, not just simple functions like changing fonts, I am lost for .... lets call it words. TeX however allows much more. But it suffers from the common plague of people trying to make it wordlike simple. These people do TeX a great disservice, because its true power lies in its complexity, and its flexibility, this book is distinguishibale in that it never takes anything for granted, and explains the printing and formatting process from scratch, in fact its the one true good book of TeX or LaTeX I have seen in the entire long quest of mine for that true book.
The one thing that is wrong with it... is that its VERY VERY expensive, it is worth the price, but still I am under the opinion the author or the publisher, could have realised what a treasure this book is an released it in a more affordable price or version... even if it ment lesser quality paper.
But it is a GREAT BOOK!
